WHAT IS EARTH LOOP TESTING AND WHY DO WE NEED TO DO IT? The Earth Loop Test is used to determine the value of the earth fault impedance, which is derived from the sum of transformer coil winding resistance, phase conductor resistance and protective earth conductor resistance (in parallel with the neutral conductor) as well as the impedance of the installation (at the point of test) phase and neutral (or phase to earth) conductors within the installation. The Earth Loop Test is done to make sure that the impedance is low enough to ensure sufficient current flows through the circuit to operate the protective device in the required time in the case of a fault. It is also important to determine the integrity of conductors (i.e. looking for poor connections) as well as the compliant integrity of the earth bonding conductor throughout the installation.

The Earth Loop Impedance can be used to calculate the PSCC. There is nothing magic here... it is just Ohms Law

If we measure loop resistance we can determine the PSCC. We need the PSCC value in order to verify the rating of the Short Circuit current protection device is adequate to ensure safety in the event of a short circuit in the installation A loop tester is basically a controlled short-circuit applied momentarily between phase and return path (either via the neutral or earth conductor, depending on how the test is performed).
