The Domestic Prewire can be a contentious subject as everyone seems to have a point of view so here we will discuss a few of the principles and trade-offs involved and hopefully simplify the process a little for the installer. The challenge is to accommodate all of the viewing habits the home owner has at present and then to also balance this against any future habits of, not only a growing family, but also any possible future owners of the home when the original family decide to move on. Often the rush towards the finish line when building can make the prewire seem like a low priority but the reality is once the wall lining is on, any future considerations for AV become much more difficult. Anyone contemplating a wireless future should consider the likely age of any immediate or future occupants of the home as there is no substitute for copper in the wall for reliability and ease of use.

locations back to the AV source. It is recommended to avoid patch panels and faceplates when choosing CAT6 distribution, and cable directly between transmitter and receiver using brush plates (see 05MM-WP64). This is to avoid the loss associated with too many intersections leading to drop out and picture instability and this means wiring directly from the equipment area to a TV location rather than through the CAT6 hub.

Another reason to prewire with CAT6 is to give each TV location a hardwired connection to the internet for the online content available in smart TVs . This is to avoid REST OF HOUSE

RG6 We would recommend every current, or possible future, TV or Sky decoder location, be wired with 1 x RG6 each back to the distribution point (typically a recessed box in the garage or a nominated equipment area in the house). If modulation for distributing SKY around the home is being considered, then you also need a second RG6 to transmit the newly created Sky DVB-T channel back to the RG6 distribution point from that SKY decoder location. In addition to this you also need to make the RG6 connections from the roof mounted Aerial or Satellite dish to feed the same distribution point. If you have both mounted on the roof then run a separate cable for each but if left with no choice you can combine the Satellite and Terrestrial signals into one cable with an outdoor diplexer. WIFI congestion and improve reliability and capacity as our connection speeds improve into the future. If you intend to run HDMI leads to distribute an AV source to all TV locations, then you also need to consider running a CAT6 lead for returning the IR commands back to the source. Whilst there are kits available to run a remote control signal over an HDMI lead there is nothing that takes into account more than one location. These IR signals can be run through a patch panel and/or faceplates as the signal is very robust once captured into a copper connection.

CAT6 Whole house distribution of an AV signal over CAT6 is now very popular due to the ease of the prewire and relatively inexpensive nature of the cable. It normally also has the advantage of returning the IR signal back to the AV source, (in the opposite direction the picture and sound are travelling) simplifying remote control from all

Prewiring with HDMI is normally a performance option when picture and sound performance are a priority. HDMI also currently happens to be the most cost effective way into 4K capacity, as 4K extenders continue to be relatively expensive compared to their 1080p cousins and modulation has an upper limit of 1080p. Whilst early, or low-cost, HDMI cables have a reputation for failing over 10m, Matchmaster’s current range of HDMI leads are fully tested and rated to work up to 20m with a 4K signal.

Simply add an HDMI splitter to the AV source and match the outputs to the number of TV’s. If you have a request for more than one HDMI source, consider an HDMI Matrix switcher. These are designed to allow switching between HDMI sources from any connected TV, independently of what the other TV’s may be set to. For the prewire, whether using an HDMI Splitter or Matrix Switcher, each TV location only needs one HDMI lead back to the equipment area.

ARC (AUDIO RETURN CHANNEL) 34MM-HDS4 CONNECTION DIAGRAM

ALL TV’S

HDMI SOURCE

Often overlooked in the prewire is consideration for transmitting the TV’s digital sound output back to an AV Amp or Soundbar location. As the drive towards thinner TV’s continues, TV manufacturers are struggling to keep sound quality advances on a par with an increasingly better picture performance. ARC is normally bundled with CEC code transfer and source on/off as well, which can be either an installer nightmare (if not handled well by the TV or HDMI source manufacturer), or a very helpful feature for the end user. Most HDMI cables have this feature as standard however it is rare to find a reliable extender that supports ARC, CEC, and IR all in one (see our 34MM-4K70-ARC). If ARC over an HDMI lead or extender is not an option, consider installing an Optical Toslink lead back to the equipment area. Common to almost all TV’s, Soundbars and AV Amps, this connection doesn’t carry any remote control signals but does have the same ability to transmit digital audio as the ARC connection. (see 04MM-TOS1 to 04MM-TOS20). If the install is complete and the wall lining is on, there is the option of transmitting the optical signal over yet another CAT5/6 cable using a Digital Audio Extender (see 34MM-DAE1). 34MM-4K70-ARC

EARC (ENHANCED AUDIO RETURN CHANNEL) eARc has the potential to reshape the prewire for home theatre. Claimed to much improve the connection and unpredictable sync ailments sometimes associated with standard ARC, this new format also increases capacity from 1Mbps to 37Mbps, which, unlike standard ARC, should allow all current sound formats to pass without the need of any further compression. Potentially this means all HDMI sources can be connected directly to the TV and an HDMI cable can be used to transmit the maximum bandwidth of the source’s audio signal intact to an eARC compatible Soundbar or AV Amp. Potentially we may even see cheaper AV amps without any video switching onboard coming onto the market as the TV becomes the HDMI hub. This also has the benefit of simplifying the user experience.

FUTURE PROOFING AND DAMAGE MITIGATION In an ideal world we would likely have floor to ceiling conduit installed to every current, or likely, TV position in a home. Given the constraints of budget, time, building regulations and the available options, what is realistic and achievable for future proofing, and for providing some options for when things do get damaged onsite. With 4K sources being slow to mature in NZ, the market has been relatively happy to stick with 1080p for POSSIBLE eARC SETUP

domestic distribution in general. England and Australia have both had their mainstream Satellite Pay TV providers delivering 4K for some years so now might be the perfect time to start thinking about offering an option to increase that installation capacity to 4K. Damage on work sites is inevitable and HDMI leads, whilst delivering the highest quality picture and sound, have the greatest potential for damage due to the larger 19pin head shells and generally larger cable gauges when compared with CAT6 or RG6, so running a relatively cheap length of CAT6 with each installed HDMI lead is highly recommended. Damage to CAT6 or RG6 is less likely but common enough to warrant consideration as well but once equipment locations are known Matchmaster has the following recommendations as a guide:

HDMI DISTRIBUTION Each Active TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview) 1 x HDMI lead 3 x CAT6 (IR, Internet, and Damage/Future) Each possible future TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview) 2 x CAT6 (AV, Internet) Each Sky decoder location: 1 x RG6 CAT6 DISTRIBUTION Each Active TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview) 3 x CAT6 (AV, Internet, and Damage/Future) Each possible future TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview) 2 x CAT6 (AV, Internet)

points or household computers and printers etc. 4.

No provision has been made for hardwiring the internet to any AV sources or Amplifiers.

5. Please remember the CAT6 for AV, is run back to the equipment area, where as CAT6 for the internet, is run back to the CAT6 distribution point. This may or may not be the same area. SUMMARY The prewire is remarkably similar across all three distribution methods and this is very convenient if a final decision on method of distribution, seating/TV positions, or number and type of AV sources, has been delayed. If the final details on equipment, seating, type of viewing etc are hard to come by, then with RG6 and CAT6 being relatively inexpensive, covering more than one option can be considered.

AUDIO & VISUAL TECHNOLOGY

(All wiring suggestions assume distribution of one AV source (typically Sky) to many TV’s and wall mounting all TV’s with no line of sight to any AV components)

At the end of the day the prewire will come down to taking an educated guess at the viewing habits of not only the current homeowners’ family but any future owners, and then incorporating as much future proofing and damage mitigation as budget and tolerance allow. Remember cabling is never cheaper than when the wall lining is off.

Each Sky decoder location: 1 x RG6 MODULATION Each Active TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview/AV) 3 x CAT6 (IR, Internet, and Damage/Future) Each possible future TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview/AV) 2 x CAT6 (Internet, IR) Each Sky decoder location: 2 x RG6 PREWIRE NOTES: 1.

No provision in the prewire suggestions above has been made for ARC/eARC for either a Soundbar or an AV Amp

2. No consideration has been given for any speaker arrangements 3.

The suggestions made are concentrated on the AV needs of the home and no provision has been made for hardwiring the internet to the wider demands of the house eg CCTV, wireless access

AUDIO & VISUAL TECHNOLOGY

Households who have come away from a Sky subscription service, often switch to a mix of Freeview and online content to satisfy their viewing habits so today we thought a discussion of the 2 choices for free to air transmission currently available in New Zealand might be overdue. Two transmission choices for Freeview are available in NZ, DVB-T (Terrestrial) and DVB-S (Satellite). The preferred choice is Terrestrial because that can deliver high definition (1080i), whereas Satellite can only deliver standard definition (576i). The reason we have 2 choices in NZ is Terrestrial cannot reach all New Zealanders and requires line of sight with a transmission tower. If you’re unlucky enough to live in a valley or dip, or are quite remote and surrounded by hills, then Satellite may be your only choice. ANTENNA SELECTION GUIDE Approx. 6 years ago Matchmaster came up with an online guide to help installers choose the best transmission method for any address. Found on the Matchmaster homepage the ‘Antenna Selection Guide’ allows anyone to enter an address and get an aerial recommendation as well as a full set of installation specifications, a Google map of the various transmitter locations, and a topography diagram showing any hills interfering with line of sight. The nature of digital transmission means there is very little ‘signal wash’ over hills or trees, as there was with analog. This is where an experienced local aerial installer with a field strength meter, can make all the difference between getting Terrestrial to work and having to choose Satellite. PHASED ARRAY Another technology advance that tipped the scales towards Terrestrial was the introduction of the ‘Phased Array’ aerial. This was a design geared towards the specific requirements of digital transmission. When Digital transmission was introduced in 2007, many home owners found their existing ‘Yagi’ aerials, previously installed to capture our analog signals, perfectly adequate for catching the new digital transmission. These traditional analog aerials were designed to generate lots of power but in doing so, also generated lots of noise. A good digital TV picture however relies

5G ON THE HORIZON With 5G on the horizon, numbers of cell towers are also set to increase, due to the shorter transmission lengths of so much more data capacity. As most installers will know 4G could be a big problem for a clean balanced terrestrial signal and Matchmaster will shortly be replacing its most popular antenna, the 02MM-MDU36, with an updated design with more 4G/5G filtering. As a TV’s DVB-T tuner can also see the same frequencies the cell towers use to connect your mobile to your service provider, we need to filter them out so as not to overwhelm the onboard TV terrestrial tuner. The new 02MM-MDU50 with 50db of filtering will take over from the 02MM-MDU36 early August with comparable pricing.

on a very clean, low noise aerial to capture the signal and low signal power can always be amplified later.

DVB-S SATELLITE TUNER The last point to note is the recent adoption of the DVB-S Satellite tuner to most new TV’s sold in NZ. Prior to this we saw just the DVB-T tuner onboard, with the possible addition of the analog tuner for older sets bought around the time of the digital transmission launch. If you are shifting house and need to look at Satellite for Freeview, and your TV predates the addition of the DVB-S tuner, then potentially you may have to add an external Satellite set top box and hook it up to the HDMI input on the existing TV. (Check the inputs on the rear of the TV to see whether it has twin tuners or not.)

AUDIO & VISUAL TECHNOLOGY

PREPARING FOR THE NEW SKY 4K SATELLITE BOX With Sky rumored to be close to releasing their long awaited 4K Satellite box, we thought it might be time to highlight some of the issues this might throw up in the light of older installed HDMI leads and Extenders. With the exception of 4K Bluray, Apple TV 4K and a few others, the NZ market has largely been satisfied with 1080p distribution in the home and with the current Sky box limited to 1080i this was more than enough to transmit our most popular viewing source around a home or business. Fast forward to the 3rd quarter of 2022 and we now have the option of choosing the next step up in viewing quality from Sky with the new 4K box. Details have yet to be confirmed but theoretically the idea of a hybrid Satellite/IP box will allow much greater flexibility for Sky when choosing which method to use for transmitting the various types of programming it may have. The issues prevalent with internet distribution of popular live sports events is well documented, with drop out and logging on issues fresh in the minds of World Cup Rugby fans…. these should be a thing of the past using Satellite. So what can you expect when hooking up the new 4K decoder (or any 4K device) to your existing connection? Just how much of a jump is it to the new format and how do you know what you have in the wall will work? The easy way is to just connect it and see what happens. Whilst all HDMI devices have the ability to read the video capabilities of a monitor or TV via the ‘EDID’ signature, and adjust the HDMI output accordingly, none have the ability to measure the capacity of the connecting cable. TV specification has grown 30 fold since the first flat panel TVs started appearing, witness the 1 million pixels used by the first 720p plasma TVs versus the 33 million pixels used in the latest 8K TV’s, yet our most widely distributed broadcasting platform Sky, has remained at 1080i for many years. So the connecting HDMI cables were only being asked to do a small proportion of what was claimed on the box, allowing some bold claims on the packaging to go unchecked. If you’ve made the swap to 4K and have no picture problems (picture instability/dropout or red/white ‘snow’) you should be in the clear. Digital generally works or it doesn’t, but if you have no picture, or are in the very narrow window of the symptoms above presenting themselves, then there are some options to try. Almost all HDMI devices have some ability to adjust the various picture parameters manually and its these that can

10

have a dramatic effect on reducing the burden of data exiting the HDMI port. The pursuit of higher frame rates from the standard 24fps for film and 30fps for video has been an attempt at a smoother, more lifelike motion. Especially important for sports fans and gamers, we are starting to see capabilities up to 120fps emerge from the likes of the PS5 and the latest Xbox. If your 4K device is setup from the box with 60Hz as its default, which includes most 4K Bluray players, then changing this to one of the lower frame rates will significantly lower the data burden with little effect on quality for most content. Chroma Subsampling is a mechanism that reduces the colour (Chroma) information from

The push towards better colour reproduction has led to 10 and 12 Bit sampling and these are taking various shapes in the market with the most recognisable being HDR @ 10bit. 4K Bluray and a few online content providers have made the switch away from the traditional 8bit standard and are providing higher cost options for HDR and Dolby Vision (12Bit). 8 Bit sampling gives 256 variations of red, green, and blue giving 16,777,216 colours in total. 10 Bit sampling (HDR) gives us 1024 levels per colour and this allows a total of 1,073,741,824 possible colours. 12 Bit (Dolby Vision) sampling gives 68 billion colours As you step up from the industry standard of 8bit sampling, the picture performance can dramatically improve and while turning off HDR or Dolby Vision in the pursuit of a lower data burden would be a shame, it remains an option when all else has failed. Whilst the bandwidth required for 4K HDMI certification has been set at 18Gbps by HDMI.org, if you turned on all the available features described above, the bandwidth needed climbs to 24Gbps. If we take our frame rate back to 24/30fps, reduce the Chroma Subsampling to 4:2:0 and don’t go any higher than 10bit sampling then we should get away with less than the 10.2Gbps standard set for HDMI1.4 (labelled ‘High Speed’). Unfortunately, not all HDMI cables live up to even this standard, despite the claims on the box, and as the standard SKY box has traditionally only needed a bandwidth closer to 2Gbps, the vast majority of connections remain untested. If you still have access to the cable path, or the site is a new build or renovation, Matchmaster NZ has a range of true 18Gbps 4K HDMI leads up to 20m, please refer to https:// www.matchmaster.co.nz/ and search for ‘04MM-SL’ for under 6m, or ‘04MM-HDR’ for over 6m. What to do if the connection fails despite reducing the bandwidth to the desired minimum? HDMI repeaters have been available for quite a few years but have managed to slip under the radar of most installers. The idea behind these is exactly the same as the chipset you will find in any modern longer HDMI lead’s TV head shell (giving it the acronym ‘Active’). Powered by the 5V rail inherent in any HDMI connection, the chips’

role is to re-equalise the signal or correct the errors, giving the lead greater capacity over a longer length. The success or otherwise of this depends on the how great the error rate is to begin with, so it is normally a case of plugging it in and seeing what happens with no guarantees. The upside is that with digital, the divide between a successful stable picture, and problems, is normally quite narrow, so small changes can make all the difference. Matchmaster currently has the latest versions under review.

AUDIO & VISUAL TECHNOLOGY

a group of 8 pixels whilst leaving the black/white (Luma) information intact and there are 3 levels. The highest level of reduction is 4:2:0 which removes the original colour information from 6 of the 8 pixels…. on the face of it this looks to be fatal but actually only has a small impact on quality. This is a common practice for video and can reduce the data burden by up to 50%.

If turning down the video enhancements and/or adding an HDMI repeater to the end of your lead still fails to deliver 4K, then the only option left is to look for alternatives to using the HDMI lead. The NZ AV market has long supported the concept of extending an HDMI picture using CAT5/6 ethernet cable, normally when distances start to creep over 10m. These extenders have continued to develop and can now easily accommodate the 18Gbps standard set down by HDMI. org for 4K over a single run of CAT6. If you happen to have a category ethernet cable in the wall then this presents an easy alternative to trying to get the older HDMI lead up to speed and has the advantage of also transferring your remote control signals back to the equipment area. If your cable is CAT5e, or an even older CAT5, then this may still work depending on the distance and quality of the installation…contact Matchmaster for advice. To see the range of Matchmaster 18Gbps 4K Extenders see https://www.matchmaster.co.nz/ and search for ‘34MM-4K’.

WIRING A SMART HOME Advice for cable installers on the wiring requirements for access to telecommunications services (broadband and voice) INTRODUCTION Advances in technology mean it’s more important than ever to make sure the wiring and connections in homes are capable of delivering modern telecommunications, entertainment and building services. It is based on the ‘Premises Wiring Cable Installers Guidelines for Telecommunication Services’, updated and approved by the NZ Telecommunications Forum (TCF) in 2021. The latest version of this Code can be accessed on the TCF’s website at: www.tcf.org.nz/ premwiring MINIMUM COMMUNICATION CABLING REQUIREMENTS Following are the minimum cable installation requirements we recommend for new homes and major renovations for which there is an opportunity to install new wiring: 1. Cabling must be ’star wired’. Telecommunications Ethernet cables need to be a minimum specification of Cat6 (UTP) or better if spans exceed 50m. 2. A star wiring box (home distributor) needs to be located at a ‘star point’ – to provide for the interconnection and distribution of cabling around the home, as well as for testing capability. It is the homeowner or builder’s responsibility to supply the home distributor, a patch panel, and patch cables. 3. The home distributor is usually installed in a wall cavity inside the home, somewhere easily accessible. If possible, it will be above the height of the External Termination Point (ETP) at about eye level (to minimise the risk of water entering the premises). Common locations for the home distributor are in an attached garage or a large cupboard or utility room. 4. The home distributor must be large enough to house devices such as an ONT, a router and an ethernet switch. Minimum dimensions of 350mm (W) x 700mm (H) x 80mm (D) are recommended, and made of non-metallic material as Wi-Fi capable equipment may be housed in here. It must also have integrated power sockets for devices. Two dual

30

power outlets as a minimum are recommended. Ensure the door can be closed once power supply units are plugged in. 5. The door on the home distributor must be louvered so air can circulate and prevent the equipment from overheating. 6. A path from the ETP to the to the Home Distributor needs to be established. Ideally this is of plastic pipe – minimum of 20mm diameter and 300mm 90˚ bend up into the home distributor. Do not use an elbow bend. The ETP is important as it allows transition of external cable to internal rated cable. It also allows the customer’s service to be restored in the event of a fault or damage to the network in the street. 7. If the path from the ETP to the Home Distributor contains more than 3 bends, and/or is longer than 20m, then installing an internal Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) microduct or a recognised fibre optic cable (such as Prysmian Optic@t) is an acceptable alternative. These are available from your Local Fibre Company. 8. At the star wiring point, all Cat6 cables will ideally be terminated on keystone RJ45 type modular

WIRING FOR THE FUTURE Although Cat6 standard wiring is sufficient for meeting the bandwidth demands of existing telecommunications services, it is a good idea to prepare ahead for future upgrades and services. Installing pipe or microduct when building or renovating the home can be a good way of preparing a property for future options such fibre 90” pipe swept optic bend cabling.

UPS TECHNOLOGY DIFFERENCES EXPLAINED LINE INTERACTIVE UPS

VS ONLINE UPS

Maintains the inverter in line and redirects the battery’s DC current path from the normal charging mode to supplying current when power is lost. There is a very short 6ms time delay when mains power is switched to the battery.

An Online UPS is designed to continue supplying power if a power loss occurs, that is to say the batteries will keep the power steady and unchanged, when power is restored mains will resume carrying the load and begin re-charging the batteries. Designed for sensitive and critical equipment/devices as there is no transfer time during a failure.

Benefits • High-efficiency • Reasonable AVR voltage conditioning • Lower electricity consumption • Lower purchase price

Benefits • No time delay from DC to AC conversion • Best voltage regulation, indicating stable voltage quality • Highest protection against all power irregularities • Pure sine wave output

Limitations • Impractical over 5kVA • Equipment not protected against all forms of power irregularities • Common output is a square sine wave, rather than pure sine wave • Requires frequent battery use in areas of extreme voltage distortion

Limitations • Higher power dissipation • Higher purchase price
