RESIDENT FEATURE
Bonded by Love, Community & Family: Shirley & Howard Bonds
T
hey just celebrated their third wedding anniversary in April, but Howard and Shirley Bonds are still honeymooning. They met at a ballroom dancing class, and began a courtship that led to their marriage three years ago. They are active members of East Point Baptist Church, and are always busy with work, family, travel and community activities. But they still find time to enjoy time with their family at their home on 17+ acres on Buzbee Road in Spanish Fort, where Howard has lived for the past 25 years. “We are blessed with many good neighbors who watch out for one another and help out when needed,” Shirley says.
A Long and Winding Road Before they met, both Howard and Shirley had established careers and families in other locations, but now have combined their children and grandchildren into their extended family. Howard’s daughters, Amy and Christian, both live in Birmingham. “Christian is a talented artist who excels at cake decorating,” Shirley says. “She is busy decorating cakes most weekends. Our daughter Amy loves to ride horses, and has won many ribbons.” Shirley’s daughter, Kristin, is the president of the Junior League of Mobile and an active volunteer and organizer for many other events. She lives in Mobile with her husband, Dr. Robert Pfeffe, an oral surgeon, and their children, Jordan and Kate. Jordan plans to attend the University of Alabama next year. Another daughter, Lauren Huemmer, is a first grade/kindergarten teacher who lives with her husband, Chris, and their children, Sarah and Andrew, in Fairfax County, Virginia. Howard has been a licensed auctioneer for 35 years, and is the owner of Bonds Realty and Auction. His signature red suspenders are a familiar sight at auctions and estate sales all around Mobile and Baldwin counties. The Bonds’ home is a showcase for the antiques Howard has collected over his years in the auction business. “This is my

favorite,” says Shirley, as she opens compartments to display books and decorative items in a beautiful antique secretary in their den. Shirley has successfully combined her interest in education and community service with her love of travel. She was formerly a preschool teacher and librarian, and is now an agent with World Ventures/DreamTrips.com. “We enjoy our dream trips” Shirley says, as she shares pictures of her family and friends on their vacations in the U.S., Central America, and the Caribbean. The Bonds are now busy planning a “Voluntour” (volunteer/ tour) to Peru in September. They will visit Machu Picchu and join with community volunteers to help build a “bottle school” for Peruvian children. Bottle construction uses “eco-bricks” made from plastic bottles and bags, with chicken wire and cement to form the walls of the school. Shirley and Howard also enjoy traveling with their children and grandchildren, but say they are happiest when they can get their family together for holidays at home. Howard sums it up: “This is the perfect place to live!”

Senior Safety in the Sun BY SHANDRA HARCARIK, RN, BSN We all want to enjoy the beautiful, hot sun during the summer months. Following are some TIPS on how to protect your skin from the sun to avoid skin cancer, protect your eyes, and stay healthy on those days spent outdoors. Your skin is a precious organ that needs tender, loving care that only you can provide! Unfortunately, the summer sunshine, UV rays and heat also can bring a few dangers, especially for seniors, including sunburn, eye damage, dehydration, heat exhaustion and more. Use a sunscreen that has at least 15 or higher SPF (Sun Protection Factor). For elderly with fragile, sensitive or pale skin, 30 SPF is recommended. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to going into the sun if possible. Apply sunscreen to all of the skin that will be exposed. Re-apply sunscreen at least every 2 hours. Apply immediately after swimming or exercise. You should use sunscreen on any sunny day, even in fall and winter.
MAY 2015
Stay out of the midday sun if possible. Find shade between 10am and 4pm. Use the shadow rule: a shadow that is longer than you means UV or Ultra Violet exposure is low; a shadow that is shorter than you means that the UV exposure is high. Wear a hat with a wide, 4-inch brim that covers your neck, ears, eyes and scalp. Wear wrap-around sunglasses with UVA and UVB ray protection. Glasses reduce the cumulative effect of damage linked to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Use lip-balm or cream that has an SPF of 15 or higher to protect your lips from getting chafed, sunburned or developing cold sores. Turn on your air conditioner: Air conditioning is important when it is hot and humid outside. During a heat wave, if you don’t have central air or a room air conditioner, spend part or most of each day at locations with air condition,

including a friend’s house, shopping mall, senior center, or movie theatre. Watch for heat stroke: Some signs to look for include confusion, disorientation, dry skin, excessive tiredness, headache, lethargy, nausea, and a rapid pulse. If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Review your medications: Many seniors use medications daily. Some medications can cause side effects, like increased sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Review all medications and check with a doctor or pharmacist for any questions. Drink plenty of fluids: Aim to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. By the time you are thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. For seniors, the feeling of thirst decreases as we age, so be sure to increase your water intake. Of those fluids you are taking in, be sure they are nonalcoholic and decaffeinated. Carbonated sodas may taste good, but they will only increase your dehydration.

RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS
The Side Effects of BY GINNY DRAFTZ
Kindness
U
sually the phrase ‘side effects’ is followed by a very long list of truly horrible things that can happen. When it comes to kindness, the opposite is true! Studies show that kind acts leave behind positive side effects for both the giver and the receiver, and sometimes even third party witnesses. Acts of kindness make us happier. When we do something we feel good about, our body releases dopamine, which leaves behind a natural high, sometimes called “helper’s high.” The emotional warmth felt by witnessing or experiencing a kindness also releases oxytocin, a hormone that dilates blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, which is great for your heart! Experiencing compassion, which often goes hand in hand with kindness, stimulates the vagus nerve, which when stimulated, reduces inflammation. Oxytocin reduces free radicals. Both free radicals and inflammation are responsible for aging. So going out of your way to do acts of kindness to strangers and loved ones alike, slows the aging process. These kind, shared acts build relationships with other people. They create bonds and connections, which increase a sense of trust and good will. These feelings combat feelings of loneliness and depression.

Finally, kindness begets kindness. Kindness inspires others to be kind. The more kindness in the world, the more positive side effects there are! What are acts of kindness? Those simple everyday moments when one person puts someone else ahead of themselves. They are those gestures that leave witnesses with a moment of awe and wonder, actions that leave us grateful to be alive. An act of kindness leaves all those involved free of worry and anxiety if only for a brief time. They are those actions that leave us with a lasting sense of peace and joy. TO YOUR HEALTH
Are You a Cooperative Orthodontic Patient? BY J. STEADMAN MCMURPHY, JR. DMD
W
hile techniques and materials have certainly evolved in orthodontics, we as orthodontists still see two major problems that above all else, directly impact both the overall time of treatment and the quality of the results. These two problems are poor oral hygiene and poor rubber band (elastic) compliance. Good oral hygiene is important for so many reasons….preventing cavities, avoiding gum disease, and eliminating the cause of bad breath, to name a few. This is no secret. But when there are orthodontic appliances of any kind attached to the teeth, it becomes increasingly more difficult to maintain a clean, healthy mouth. As plaque and food debris accumulate around the braces, the enamel can become stained and discolored (permanently) and the gum tissues inflamed. And for patients already in braces, take special note! Teeth do not move very quickly through inflamed gum tissues, so if this is a problem, it means you will have to wear your braces longer (sometimes much longer). To avoid this, we recommend cleanings with your dentist twice as often (every three months), and more time spent on proper home care. The latter suggestion seems so simple and obvious, but we notice that most patients who have a problem with poor oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment are simply not spending enough time brushing and flossing. In addition to good brushing and flossing habits, oral rinses and waterpik cleanings can certainly help as well. When braces are on the teeth, a general rule of thumb is to allow for 8-10 minutes per cleaning session, 3 times a day. We understand that this is collectively a lot of time out of your day, but in most
MAY 2015
cases, that is generally what’s required to maintain optimal oral health. Proper cleaning technique is obviously critical as well, and your orthodontist or general dentist can demonstrate this for you anytime.
standard, rubber bands are utilized. Some patients need to wear them more than others throughout treatment, but one thing is certain; if they aren’t worn as directed for the time indicated, treatment will not finish on time.
In addition to maintaining good oral hygiene, we also commonly encounter problems with patients not wearing their rubber bands enough to achieve optimal bite correction. We know that most patients choose to undergo orthodontic treatment to improve smile esthetics. But in addition to this, we as orthodontists also want to optimize bite function, and to do this, good rubber band compliance is critical. Ideal placement of the braces on the teeth and the micro-adjustments made to the wires during treatment certainly contributes to the overall bite correction. However, to finish at an ideal
The overall point of this article is to help make people aware that orthodontic treatment success depends so much on patient effort, motivation, and compliance. As orthodontists, we direct the course of treatment from the initial treatment plan, through active treatment and finishing, and to the retention period. But without good patient cooperation, achieving a perfect result completed on time is often very difficult. With the very simple aforementioned suggestions, patients will enjoy a more pleasant, faster treatment experience, and will be happier with the treatment results-Guaranteed!

LIVING IN ABUNDANCE
BY: JENNIFER MORGAN My husband recently gave me this great little book called Married for Life, Inspirations from Those Married for 50 Years or More. I read my first few inspirations last night and wanted to share a particular one with each of you. Why? I believe in this particular inspiration with my whole heart. It’s called, “Never Get Too Old to Hold Hands.” Did you know that holding hands is one of the most intimate expressions of love between two human beings? Don’t ever let this beautiful act slip away from you. It’s so much more than a gesture of affection, so much greater that a mere symbol of connection. It’s an incredibly meaningful communication, a deep connection, in and of itself. It requires no words; in fact, there are no words that can convey such a profound message. Why would two people ever stop holding hands? Perhaps it may seem silly, somehow undignified, when we’re older and have been married a long time. We may begin to think such things were meant only for young lovers and newlyweds. That’s far from true! Besides its many other purposes, holding hands helps satisfy the basic human need for physical touch, a need we never outgrow.
which is an important factor in love. Holding hands remains a sign of intimacy between couples, keeping two people together as they navigate the world around them. It is as powerful a gesture today as it was 200 years ago. Make a commitment today to hold your spouse’s hand throughout your life together; don’t ever let it go until the day when you’ve fulfilled every marriage vow and finally release your grasp, placing it lovingly, trustingly into the hand of God. SHARE THE BEACH
THE TURTLES ARE COMING! BY MIKE REYNOLDS, SHARE THE BEACH TURTLE CZAR Alabama Sea Turtle Nesting Season is May 1 - October 31 From May through October each year, we share our beach with dozens of mother sea turtles. These endangered animals are looking for a safe place to make a nest where their babies can hatch, and then find their way safely into the warm Gulf waters. Thousands of hatchlings take their first steps right here on our shores each year. Many of them need a helping hand to reach the water. The many volunteers of the Share the Beach program give them just that.
Turtle Facts • Sea Turtles are protected by the Endangered Species Act. It is against the law to disturb nesting sea turtles, hatchlings, or their nests. • Sea turtles first appeared about 200 million years ago when dinosaurs still roamed the earth. Sea turtles, the last of the ancient reptiles, are like living fossils. • Female sea turtles lay an average of 100 leathery, pingpong-size eggs at a time. Only a few young turtles, however, will make it to adulthood. • Hatchling sea turtles find their way to the Gulf waters by moonlight or starlight. Building lights along the shore may confuse the baby sea turtles, drawing them away from the water. • Adult loggerhead sea turtles weigh between 175 and 350 pounds. Baby hatchlings weigh only one to two ounces. • The sea turtle egg incubation period is 55 to 75 days. Most hatchlings emerge together in an “eruption” of babies from the nest. • There are many ways to help the endangered sea turtles, but the best way is to educate yourself about sea turtles and what you can do to help.
Tips for Being Sea Turtle Friendly • Avoid using flashlights or flash photography on the beach at night. • Turn off outside patio lights and shield indoor lights from shining onto the beach at night. • Do not disturb sea turtle nests.
“Share the Beach” Volunteer Program Hundreds of volunteers take time to “Share the Beach” with threatened and endangered sea turtles each year. From searching for nests and assisting in hatchling success to public education and talks to school groups, these volunteers are making a difference in the future of Alabama’s sea turtles and Alabama’s coastal ecosystem. If you have the time, the turtles need you! Each year hundreds of volunteers take their turn at patrolling an assigned stretch of beach, being available for late-night nestsitting when hatching time is near, or just helping keep supplies and equipment ready.
• Do not leave trash on the beach.

TO YOUR HEALTH
Learning to Cook for a Child with Food Allergies BY TARA KUHL To increase chances of my son outgrowing his food allergies, we were told to try to avoid any and all products containing milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts. I was given a list of all the different names for milk and egg in food products, as well as suggestions for replacing egg in baked goods and a few websites that may be helpful. I was discouraged. At 12 months, my child was finally old enough to eat table foods and I couldn’t think of a single thing I could feed him. I pored through the allergy websites and allergy cookbooks looking for foods to feed my baby and practically every recipe was for cake or cookies. What was I going to feed him for dinner? I was daunted by the task of reading ingredient labels for every single thing I buy and serve my son. I recalled all my favorite recipes, made with cream soups, sour cream, cheese, eggs and tree nuts. What could I make that the whole family could eat? I sifted through my recipes and found three or four that did not contain any milk or egg products. One was for chili and another was stir-fry. So began a new way of cooking that honestly was much healthier for the whole family – a lot of fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits, whole wheat pastas, breads and brown rice. Making foods from scratch instead of store-bought, prepackaged, processed foods full of high fructose corn syrup, salt, food coloring and other additives and void of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. A huge help in my new arena of cooking was the Kraft Food & Family magazines that are now only available online. I have modified many of the recipes to be allergen-free or in many cases, cheese is optional – you just add it at the end. I’m also big on one-pot meals; all the meat, pasta or rice, veggies together in one-pot for ease in preparation, serving

and clean-up. Serve with salad and you’ve just met the half-quarter-quarter rule of filling half the plate with veggies, a quarter with meat and a quarter with starch. So now I had a few recipes to make for my family. I checked out Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Good Harvest to see what milk alternatives they had and started trying out new foods at home, like soy yogurt, soy or rice cheese, vegan mayonnaise, etc. and basically built up a list of favorites. I also read all the labels on everything from tortillas to cereal to spaghetti sauce to barbeque sauce. To be honest, grocery shopping is quite easy when your options are limited! Whenever we go to a party or go out to eat, we bring along a little something from home, just in case. And by now, we know which restaurants are allergen-friendly from all the road trips to and from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Through the process of learning to cook for a child with food allergies, I certainly experienced the five stages of grief. When my son was first diagnosed with milk and egg allergies, I experienced denial. I tried to convince myself he couldn’t be allergic to peanut too (the odds are actually very good) and gave him a cereal containing peanut, leading to his most severe anaphylactic reaction to date and diagnoses of a severe life-threatening peanut and tree nut allergy. I felt isolated, not knowing where to turn for help and overwhelmed as a first time mother. I was fortunate to hear about Children’s Allergy Network of Wisconsin (CAN), which held meetings monthly to support parents and

allow them an opportunity to share, learn and even vent frustrations about cooking, eating out, parties, school, treatment and more. I felt guilty for consuming milk or eggs while nursing, which only later did I realize exacerbated my son’s allergies, acid reflux and eczema. I even experienced a mild depression; having to avoid certain foods can really sap the joy out of cooking. But over time, as I gained knowledge about food allergies, food preparation, and precautions, being able to share it with others just beginning their journey led to acceptance and peace and gave me purpose. I was blessed to be able to share my ups and downs, experiences and advice! And when my daughter came along, I was able to identify her food allergies sooner and did not experience as much stress about cooking or food. Looking back, I know that one of the biggest factors to overcoming the struggles of food allergies in our house was the unending love and support that came from our family, friends, neighbors, schools and community. The respect and consideration for our children’s food allergies is so appreciated, whether it is a neighbor that remembers a special allergen-free treat at Trick or Treating, a Peanut-Free Zone sign in the church nursery, or my mom setting aside plain mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving, the people who have gone the extra mile to make us feel welcome and cared about have really made a difference. Our whole family thanks you!
