2016 ANNUAL REPORT

After three years as finalists, IDEA received the Broad Prize and was named America’s Best Charter School Network in June. It was an honor to be among two other elite networks and finalists, YES Prep of Houston and Success Academy of New York City. The honor came as a culmination of all the remarkable things this organization has achieved in the past few years. Every one of our campuses met standard, according to Texas Education Agency. Our standardized test results increased holistically on both Level II and Level III achievement. Twenty IDEA schools received all distinctions for which they were eligible. One-hundred percent of our seniors graduated, matriculated to college, and began their journeys at quality universities around the country, becoming the next generation of leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and forward thinkers. Parents, teachers, and students alike shared teary-eyed hugs at our annual College Signing Day at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. An emotional crowd of over 12,000 people watched as IDEA Public Schools’ Class of 2016 revealed their college choices. It was a multiple-day celebration of achievement and commitment, and one of our most inspiring traditions. IDEA Public Schools places so much stock in College Signing Day because we know what a monumental moment this is for everyone involved. A college degree changes a life trajectory. It’s the single most-important factor to combat poverty in America, and it’s the precursor to achieving The American Dream.

background, race, or income, should be able to dream their most ambitious dreams and then go out and achieve them. None of this success would be possible without our teachers and leaders. We’ve recruited, trained, and retained the best educators around, and because retaining staff members is a top priority at IDEA Public Schools, we are dedicated to ensuring our employees are the healthiest, happiest, best trained, and most supported in the country. This past July, we made additional strides to ensure our organization is a sustainable one for our employees by offering paid maternity leave for up to eight weeks to all eligible staff members. We’re proud to be the outlier in a country where private corporations only provide paid leave to 12% of Americans. Not only maintaining, but expanding IDEA’s team and family is so important because of our future plans. By 2022, we will educate 100,000 students across ten regions throughout the United States, teaching grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th at 173 schools. As we’ve grown, we’ve shown no signs of compromising our effectiveness. In fact, as we open more new campuses and instruct more new students, our achievement results only grow. This will continue to be the case as IDEA Public Schools expands to El Paso, Southern Louisiana, and beyond. Why? Because wherever we go, we take the best educators, the most rigorous curriculum, and an unwavering commitment to every student we serve with us. Just as every one of our scholars is on the road to college, we too, as an organization, are on the road to maintain our status as the best charter school network. Read on to learn more about the most successful year yet at IDEA Public Schools.

The American Dream—it’s a glamorous notion, but also an elusive one. For me, The American Dream means you can be whatever you want to be, and do whatever you want to do. IDEA Public Schools is making this a reality for every student we serve. It’s what makes honors like The Broad Prize or celebrations like College Signing Day so special—they’re reflections of the work we do for our students. We believe that every child, no matter their

GRAND EXPANSION

THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY

In the Rio Grande Valley, where it all began for founders Tom Torkelson and JoAnn Gama during their Teach for America placement, the demand for a quality education is at an all-time high. IDEA Public Schools will educate 22,000 students across 35 schools this year. Much work is still to be done in our flagship region to ensure all Rio Grande Valley children have access to top-notch schools that ensure college matriculation and graduation.

People often don’t know much about the Rio Grande Valley ... yet within our community, we have people with the right mindset, and the right talent, and the vision for what’s possible in public education.

IDEA TRES LAGOS OPENING AUGUST 2017 MCALLEN, TEXAS

Mike and Lori Rhodes, founders of the Rhodes Enterprises, a premier development company based in the Rio Grande Valley, have been long-time partners with IDEA Public Schools and incredible supporters over the years. Their most recent development is Tres Lagos and one of the high-quality education options in the neighborhood will be IDEA Tres Lagos, which will open in 2017 and educate 520 Pre-K through 1st and 6th graders in its founding year. By 2024, IDEA Tres Lagos will serve grades Pre-K through 12th.

Mike and Lori have stated that building communities has been the catalyst in their work, and that education is the key. “IDEA Public Schools has changed education for the better…not only statewide, but nationwide,” Mike noted. “We’re proud to work with them.” The McAllen area is home to several already existing IDEA campuses, but the demand for an IDEA education persists. Last year, 50,000 students applied for 10,000 seats. Families in the Mcallen community eagerly await the opening of IDEA Tres Lagos for the opportunity to access to a great education.

IDEA RIO GRANDE CITY OPENING AUGUST 2017 RIO GRANDE CITY, TEXAS

Fernando Salinas, a long-time IDEA employee who both taught and served as a Principal-in-Residence, will lead a talented group of educators as they establish the first IDEA campus in Starr County. Growing up in Rio Grande City, it was there Fernando first connected a quality education to a bright future. We look forward to opening our brand new campus, IDEA Rio Grande City Academy and College Prep, in August and are grateful for the opportunity to educate the students of the community Fernando grew up in. Rose Benavidez, president of the Starr County Industrial Foundation, noted that the creation of IDEA Rio Grande City is, “A good opportunity for students to have options for their education.” In August 2017, IDEA Rio Grande City will open its doors and serve 520 Pre-K - 1st and 6th graders, and by 2024 we will expand to a full Pre-K - 12 campus.

GRAND EXPANSION

SAN ANTONIO

In 2012, IDEA promised San Antonio it would open 20 high-performing charter schools by 2017. Today, four short years later, IDEA is making this a reality and educating more than 5,000 San Antonians. As we aim to close the achievement gap in San Antonio, many community members have partnered with us in our quest to offer a quality education for all. The Mays family, the Najim family, the George W. Brackenridge Foundation, and the Ewing Halsell Foundation have all given generous donations to our organization to help improve Pre-K - 12 education in the home of the Alamo.

Partnering with IDEA has been a phenomenal experience. We must have strong students and strong schools to use the tremendous resources at our fingertips. We have a big gap to fill in preparing our students at the fourth grade level for what’s ahead of them. We’ve got to have the continuity coming from the lower grades to prepare them to graduate and to succeed in college. — David Robinson, NBA Legend and IDEA San Antonio Board Member

IDEA COMMUNITY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

The Ewing Halsell Foundation has been fundamental in the progression of IDEA’s expansion in San Antonio. In 2012, the foundation committed $10 million to IDEA Public Schools to recruit and grow in The Alamo City. It was the Ewing Halsell Foundation’s first major gift toward public charter school expansion, and it aided our mission to open 20 high-quality public

charter schools in seven years. Putting students first, our IDEA San Antonio team is committed to learning, striving for excellence, and delivering results. Our teachers and principals continue this drive for excellence daily on every campus. When IDEA Ewing Halsell opens, it will be a significant milestone for both charter school network and charitable trust.

ABOUT THE EWING HALSELL FOUNDATION Ewing and Lucile Halsell were pioneering cattle ranchers originally from Oklahoma who fell in love with Texas and made San Antonio their second hometown. They had no children of their own, but desired to leave a legacy. Halsell’s mission and vision for the foundation is to “Improve the quality of life for all Texans – especially those less fortunate than ourselves.”

In supporting IDEA and other high-performing schools of choice in San Antonio, the foundation endeavors for these investments to create and expand quality educational opportunities and access so that current & future generations have the ability to pioneer their own legacy.

Three new campuses will join IDEA San Antonio’s Team and Family in 2017-2018: 11

GRAND EXPANSION

AUSTIN

With 6 schools serving 2,300 students, IDEA Austin has just begun to tap into its potential for expansion.

We’ve been looking at opportunities to grow for a long time. The demand is there in the community, and we feel obligated to respond to that demand.

26 SCHOOLS.

In aid of meeting the need for quality education in Texas’ capital, the KLE Foundation, founded by Rani Clasquin and Eric Harslem in 1997, donated 16 million dollars to IDEA Austin this past May. This financial gift will more than double our previous expansion plans by 2022, and help boost enrollment to 20,000 students. This is exciting news, considering how fast charter schools have grown in the area the past several years. Currently, there are more than 11,000 students on waiting lists for charter schools in Austin, and IDEA Public Schools plans to accommodate those still in need of a great education. IDEA Austin primarily serves low-income students, the majority of them Hispanic, and, like our current three campus sites, plans to open campuses in areas with high percentages of low-income students and a history of under performing schools. The average student who transfers to IDEA is two years behind his peers. Our mission will always be sending every IDEA student, no matter their background, to and through college. In 2019, IDEA will graduate its first class of seniors and 100% of them will be accepted to college. By 2022, IDEA Austin will operate 26 schools preparing to serve nearly 20,000 students in grades K-12. Thanks to support from local community partners, our growth will increase exponentially, which means further impacting more students. Here’s a snapshot of year-by-year growth at IDEA Austin:

GRAND EXPANSION

EL PASO

El Paso is one of the largest cities in America without a major charter school presence. In fact, there are currently only a dozen charter schools in El Paso County, despite a population of over 665,000 people. Members of the El Paso community want more quality educational options for their children.

Research showed us that El Pasoans are craving high-quality teachers and better school choices near them. We can give them that.

INTRODUCING ERNESTO CANTU

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, IDEA EL PASO Ernesto (Ernie) Cantu is a respected education leader with a track-record of success at IDEA Public Schools. In 2003, he joined IDEA as a part-time tutor. The next year, he became a full-time team member as a 6th grade math teacher at our flagship school, IDEA Academy Donna. From there, Ernie has served IDEA as a headquarters employee, as an Assistant Principal of Operations, Principal, and a Senior Vice President of Schools. Ernie’s varied experiences and relentless commitment to College For All Children make him an excellent leader for IDEA’s newest region, El Paso.

1K STUDENTS.

State Representative of El Paso, César Blanco, noted of IDEA Public Schools, “Whenever you get to see a majority of Latino kids graduating from high school and 100 percent of the graduating class was accepted to college, it’s impressive.” Renard Johnson, CEO of METI, a professional Technology and Engineering based in El Paso, said he was “floored” by IDEA’s College Signing Day, when graduating seniors publicly announce which colleges they’ll attend. “It’s another good alternative to have in our community that will raise the bar for education in El Paso,” Johnson noted. By 2018, we will operate 4 schools and educate nearly 1,000 students in the El Paso Region. IDEA Chief Advancement Officer Sam Goessling has noted that hiring El Pasoans to be principals, assistant principals and teachers at its West Texas schools is a top priority.

WHAT DO PARENTS WANT? Quality teachers and faculty was El Paso parents’ number one priority for their children, followed by a close proximity to home and a challenging curriculum. IDEA is prepared to offer all of these and more for our future IDEA El Paso families.

GRAND EXPANSION

SOUTHERN LOUISIANA

In the exploration of new regions for IDEA Public Schools, no community made as much of an impression on our hearts and on our minds than Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where thousands of students are in need of a quality education. Here, the achievement gap is starkly present. On average, black students performed 46 percentage points lower than their white peers on district tests.

In the next five years, we can completely transform what people think is possible for schools in Baton Rouge.

2018. 4 SCHOOLS.

1K STUDENTS.

Members of the Baton Rouge Community are dedicated to improving the quality of their schools, particularly when it comes to low–income students of color. IDEA Public Schools is eager to join the movement for educational change, alongside other charter networks such as Collegiate Academies and Inspire Charter Schools of New Orleans. By 2018, four IDEA schools will open in the Baton Rouge area, educating nearly 1,000 students. Families in the community are eager for a quality charter network to lay a foundation in their city, but some remain skeptical due to poorly run charter schools failing in the past. IDEA Public Schools will need to prove its worth to a region in need of great schools. We will bring to Baton Rouge talented teachers, a rigorous curriculum, and a passion to close the achievement gap.

INTRODUCING KENNETH CAMPBELL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, IDEA SOUTHERN LOUISIANA

Kenneth brings decades of experience creating exceptional education opportunities for children to his position at IDEA. Most recently, Kenneth was the President of Black Alliance for Educational Options, Inc. (BAEO). BAEO is one of the leading education reform advocacy organizations in the nation. Under Kenneth’s leadership BAEO created, protected, and advocated for high-quality school options in some of America’s most underserved communities. Kenneth’s proven commitment to children – all children – makes him a perfect fit for IDEA Public Schools.
