REGIONAL STORIES

Tarrant County In 2018, IDEA Tarrant County broke ground on two campuses—IDEA Rise and IDEA Achieve. Both campuses are set to launch in August 2019 with grades Pre-K through 2nd and 6th grade. Collectively they will serve more than 1,000 students in Tarrant County and will add a grade level each year until they serve Pre-K through 12th grade in 2025. IDEA Edgecliff – our third campus - will launch in 2020.

Over the next six years, IDEA Tarrant County has plans to launch 10 campuses. Thanks to the generous support of local funders like the Rainwater Charitable Foundation and the Sid Richardson Foundation, the region is on track to serve 15,000 college-bound scholars by 2030.

El Paso

IDEA opened its first two campuses, IDEA Rio Vista and IDEA Edgemere, in the El Paso Region in August of 2018.

In the coming year, IDEA will establish its regional headquarters in downtown El Paso and its first west side campus, IDEA Mesa Hills. Throughout IDEA’s expansion in El Paso, the region has had overwhelming support from our growing family of scholars and parents.

IDEA El Paso's biggest advocate for growth in the region has been CREEED, Council on Regional Economic Expansion and Educational Development. Dedicated to bringing business, education, and community leaders together to identify and implement solutions that will increase student attainment, CREEED has invested in our mission to ensure El Paso students succeed on the road to and through college.

Southern Louisiana

IDEA launched its expansion outside of Texas in August of 2018 opening two campuses in Southern Louisiana, IDEA Bridge and IDEA Innovation.

The region received support from across the community in successfully launching our schools, but nowhere was that help and support more prominent than from New Schools for Baton Rouge (NSBR). NSBR will continue to be a key partner in the region's collaborative efforts to provide a high-quality education to thousands of children in Baton Rouge on the road to and through college.

In 2018, the region also announced the launch of its first campus in New Orleans, IDEA Oscar Dunn, opening with grades K-5 in August 2019. Both New Schools for New Orleans and The BoothBricker Fund have been key to ensuring the region has a successful launch in New Orleans. The region is proud of its continuing work and dedication to the communities served in Baton Rouge and also looks forward to building its relationship with the families of New Orleans as they work toward opening IDEA Oscar Dunn in 2019.

Austin

On track to serve over 13,000 students across 26 schools by 2022, IDEA opened two new campuses in the Greater Austin Area in August 2018, IDEA Kyle and IDEA Pflugerville.

2019 will welcome IDEA Parmer Park Academy and College Preparatory in Northeast Austin and our first specialized campus, IDEA Health Professions. The continued support of local Austin donors such as the KLE Foundation and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation have made IDEA Austin’s expansion plan a reality.

In addition to IDEA Austin’s rapid growth, the region is also looking forward to celebrating its first graduating class from IDEA Austin’s founding campus, IDEA Montopolis. Ninety-five percent of the Class of 2019 at IDEA Montopolis will be the first in their family to go to college, and each of them will serve as a proof point of what is possible for students in Austin.

The Bats’ College Prep flag football team had an undefeated season and championship win.

IDEA Kyle is the home of the Knights and opened its doors in August 2018 to more than 700 students in grades K – 2 and 6.

San Antonio

In 2018, IDEA San Antonio completed its first phase of expansion, and now serves over 11,000 students at 22 schools across Bexar County.

Additionally, the region also reached a record high waitlist of over 14,000 students, which serves as a reminder of the continued need for high-quality schools across San Antonio. In an effort to meet that need, IDEA San Antonio will begin its second expansion phase in the coming year with the support of the Ewing Halsell Foundation and George W. Brackenridge Foundation, both steadfast champions of IDEA San Antonio. With their lead on a $10 million multi-funder pledge, IDEA San Antonio will be able to serve nearly 30,000 students across 36 schools by 2022.

The region is looking forward to graduating its first senior class from IDEA Carver in Spring 2019 and maintaining its commitment to the families of Bexar County with the opening of the IDEA Burke campus in August of 2019.

IDEA Brackenridge was recognized on the Alliance for a Healthier Generations list of “America's Healthiest Schools.”

The city of San Antonio is known for many things, including the Alamo, the Riverwalk, the San Antonio Spurs, and legendary Hall of Famer David Robinson. While many are familiar with David Robinson's exceptional basketball career, he continues to significantly impact the city through his philanthropic leadership. Robinson’s charitable endeavors are a family affair. Both David Robinson, Sr. and more recently, David Robinson Jr., sit on IDEA San Antonio’s Regional Advisory Board.

David Robinson has been leading efforts to bring quality education to East San Antonio for decades and has been a part of the IDEA family since 2012.

The Carver Academy, named in honor of George Washington Carver, was initially established as a faith-based private school by David Robinson, Sr. and his wife, Valerie. Throughout its existence, the school served a socio-economically and culturally diverse student population attending pre-k through sixth grade.

At the Carver Academy, there was a strong emphasis not only on academics, but on children’s social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs as well. In 2012, the Carver Academy converted to a 22

tuition-free, charter school as part of the IDEA Public Schools network. IDEA Carver is the flagship school for IDEA in San Antonio, and to date, the region has grown to 22 schools and 11,000 students across San Antonio.

When Carver became a charter school, the Friends of Carver organization was formed by the Robinsons in partnership with the San Antonio Area Foundation.

Friends of Carver’s mission is to assist with scholarships for IDEA Carver students and serve as a funding source that will sustain and elevate educational standards, reduce the number of students failing to graduate from high school, and increase the number of high school graduates prepared for college.

2019 is a banner year for IDEA San Antonio, during which the region will be graduating its first ever senior class from IDEA Carver. With the help of David Jr., the Friends of Carver came full circle by supporting IDEA Carver seniors financially through college matriculation. The gift will provide monetary support for college-bound seniors graduating from the San Antonio high school. It will cover the cost of two new scholarship programs: the David Robinson Fellowship and the David Robinson Scholarship, as well as several piloted wrap around services for the Carver campus.

IDEA is experiencing a inspiring dual effort by both David Robinson Sr. and David Robinson Jr. combining the experience and guidance of a philanthropist who has invested many years in IDEA’s mission with the next generation of energy and vision that will lead to innovation and impact for years to come.

Rio Grande Valley 2018 marked another notable milestone for IDEA’s founding region. In addition to opening two new campuses, IDEA Elsa and IDEA Owassa, the region also broke ground on its very own soccer school, IDEA Toros. Students, staff and community members alike are anxiously awaiting the January 2020 opening of the IDEA Toros campus in Edinburg, Texas, which will house two high-level grass soccer fields, a weight room, and a gym.

Currently serving 27,000 students across 39 schools, IDEA Rio Grande Valley is also excited to continue its growth and welcome the addition of two new campuses, IDEA Robindale and IDEA Los Encinos, in the fall of 2019.

Greater Houston PREPARING TO SERVE STUDENTS IN 2020

IDEA Public Schools is expanding to Houston, Texas, our nation’s fourth largest city. The team is fastidiously preparing to open two pre-k - 12th grade campuses, launching with Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 6th grades and adding one grade per school every year until each campus is fully enrolled. Eight additional campuses will open across Houston through August of 2026, ultimately providing 15,000 students with a transformational public education. The Greater Houston team is excited to continue its mission of to and through college for students and families.

INTRODUCING ALLISON SERAFIN,

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF IDEA GREATER HOUSTON Allison Serafin has nearly 20 years of experience as an education leader and advocate for excellent public schools. She is excited to serve her hometown of Houston by offering an additional high-quality education option for families in the community. Allison attended private and public schools in Houston and experienced the opportunity gap firsthand, fueling her passion to serve students and families who lack access to great public schools simply because of their zip code or family income.

As Executive Director, Allison is responsible for the successful launch, growth and student achievement outcomes of every IDEA Greater Houston school.

Laura & John Arnold Laura and John Arnold are visionary philanthropists committed to creating systemic social change in areas of society where inefficiency and inequality restrict progress. The Arnolds’ $10 million seed gift to IDEA Public Schools cemented the launch of IDEA’s eighth region in Greater Houston.

Through the couple’s philanthropy, Arnold Ventures, and their donor-advised fund, the Arnolds invest strategically in policy areas that offer an opportunity for scalable and sustainable change and use philanthropy as an engine of innovation.

The Arnolds' philanthropic work has generally fallen within four different areas: criminal justice, health, public finance and education. Their legacy of investment in K-12 education reform has supported the launch and growth of numerous high-performing public charter school networks and education talent programs.

Early support from the Arnolds was key in building a solid financial foundation for the Houston region, and their generosity also inspired confidence on the part of fellow donors. IDEA Greater Houston is proud to work alongside community leaders like the Arnolds. Together, we are partnering to close the opportunity gap and provide students with an educational pathway that allows them to live their best lives.
