“This year, we are scaling locally. By engaging new partners, new industries, and the larger NOLA community, we are going to make entrepreneurship part of what we do.”
TIM WILLIAMSON CEO & CO-FOUNDER THE IDEA VILLAGE @thwilliamson
Welcome to the New Orleans entrepreneurial movement. Now in its 6th year, New Orleans Entrepreneur Week (NOEW) is the platform that engages a dynamic global network of founders, mentors, investors, professionals, and civic leaders to help launch and grow startups in New Orleans. NOEW is the culmination of the Entrepreneur Season™, which launches each July. From March 22 - 28, 2014, through over 80 unique events, you will witness firsthand why entrepreneurship has become a catalyst for change in New Orleans – and why the nation is starting to take notice. As a recent Brookings Institution report revealed, New Orleans is outpacing the rest of the nation in entrepreneurial activity at 56% above the national average. Because of the collective efforts of the local entrepreneurial community, Forbes has called New Orleans the #1 Brain Magnet in the Country, #3 Best City for Tech Jobs, and #1 City in the USA for the in-migration of ‘Workers in Their Prime,’ ages 30 - 49. Additionally, Inc.com named us the “Coolest Startup City in America.” Even with all of these wonderful accolades, I am most excited by the fact that we are “scaling locally” – that we are instilling rhythms and rituals that engage the broader community to participate in the entrepreneurial movement. This year, over 19 partners will showcase 70+ startups from diverse industries, including water, education, food, technology, and 3D printing across a variety of innovative events. In addition, NOEW will feature a Youth Entrepreneurship Day with over 50 emerging high schools entrepreneurs presenting their big ideas. I would like to personally invite you to join us for the grand finale of NOEW 2014, The Big Idea at Manning’s on Fulton Street on Friday, March 28th. This is the world’s largest crowd driven pitch event, where together, we will celebrate 13 startups…New Orleans-style. Thank you for you joining us on our journey to make New Orleans a vibrant entrepreneurial community. We are well on our way...

MONDAY MONDAY 3/24 3/24 Beyond Your Bright Idea: A Guide to Market-Driven Product Development | 9:00AM - 10:30AM All startups begin with one bright idea. Then the founder feels the pressure to come up with even more bright ideas and that is when things can go wrong. By maintaining a market-driven focus, you can avoid this common founder folly and enjoy the benefits (and revenue) of letting your customers drive the direction of your company. In this session, you will learn how to listen and truly hear your customers, how to manage customer expectations in a market-driven model, and how to translate customer requests into profit. @clearlytorrie | Torrie Adams, Product Manager, Kickboard
Proof of Concept: 5 days and $50 | 9:30AM - 10:30am Do you have a great business idea, but don’t think it’s quite ready? Don’t delay, start something now. Test that “million dollar idea” by starting something smaller. You learn so much about yourself and business by going through the process. In this session, Colin and Gerard will demonstrate how to flesh out and test a business idea quickly and cheaply using a variety of tools and hacks. @52Businesses | Colin Grussing, Founder, 52Businesses; @gerardramos | Gerard Ramos, Founder & CEO, Revelry Labs LLC
Taxes, Subpoenas, and Other Dirty Words: The Top Legal Issues That Entrepreneurs Should Know about | 11:00am - 12:30PM Developing businesses face a variety of issues with legal considerations. This session provides a primer on several important legal issues, both new and longstanding, that entrepreneurs should be aware of as they build their businesses. Topics covered in this session include: (1) The JOBS Act and Crowdfunding; (2) Founder’s Stock; (3) The Effect of Health Care Reform on Small Businesses; (4) Employment Agreements: Work for Hire, Non-Competition, Non-Solicitation; (5) Independent Contractor vs. Employee Status; (6) The Basics of Louisiana’s Open Account Statute for Unpaid Receivables; and (7) Bankruptcy Basics when a Customer/Supplier Files for Bankruptcy Protection. Mark Jeanfreau, Partner, Phelps Dunbar LLP; Alex Glaser, Associate, Phelps Dunbar LLP; Bryan Bowdler, Attorney, Phelps Dunbar LLP
PR Wishes and Digital Media Dreams: How to Succeed by Evolving Your Communications Strategy | 11:30am - 12:30PM Today, more Americans obtain news from the Internet than print and radio outlets, and nearly 20% of consumers obtain news via social media. Furthermore, journalist layoffs have scaled newsrooms back by 30% - placing added constraints on reporting. As traditional news outlets race to digital platforms to harness online ad revenue and readership, brands must adapt to a new integrated communications approach. This session will teach you how to create a press release that dominates search engines, how to communicate with reporters in the digital age, and how to develop shareable digital media and PR content. @ar__pr | Anna Ruth Williams, Founder & CEO, AR|PR; Blair Broussard, Vice President, AR|PR

FAILURE FEST | 1:30PM - 3:00PM Failure - It’s one of the only things common to most great ventures. Because successful entrepreneurs are pushing the boundaries of old ways of doing things, they encounter failure on a regular basis. But, it’s their response to these setbacks that ultimately lays the groundwork for their future success. During this panel, a group of local entrepreneurs will discuss some of their biggest failures, as well as the lessons they learned, with the hope of encouraging others in the New Orleans community to get out there, fail, learn, and thrive.
Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself: The JOBS Act & The New World of Raising Private Capital | 1:30PM - 3:00PM It’s a brave new world and you need to be prepared. In this session, Asher Friend and Britt Seal, Corporate & Securities Partners at Jones Walker, will discuss the new JOBS Act and its effect on capital markets. Learn how legislation and related new rules have evolved, how it impacts your business, and how the removal by the SEC of its longstanding prohibition on the use of general solicitation and advertising when raising private capital has disrupted the status quo. Asher Friend, Partner, Jones Walker LLP; Britt Seal, Partner, Jones Walker LLP

There are differences in how these programs work and which types of businesses can best utilize them, and it can often take a combination of all of these sources to make an entrepreneur’s vision for their company a reality. In this session, attendees will learn about what is available and gain an understanding of when it is appropriate and advantageous to use these sources, giving the entrepreneur more options to help them reach his/her goals. NEW ORLEANS ENTREPRENEUR WEEK
PROGRAM
The idea behind NOEW was hatched in 2006 when ambitious MBA students seized the opportunity to spend their spring break in New Orleans working with high-growth entrepreneurs through the IDEAcorps program. In 2009, led by investment from the Economic Development Administration, The Idea Village decided to scale the impact for the community by engaging MBAs, national and local corporations, and investors to spend a week together in New Orleans supporting entrepreneurs. The “IDEAcorps Challenge” was rebranded as New Orleans Entrepreneur Week in 2010.

An Independent Spirit Is A Major Ingredient In Our Success Our grandfather, Anthony J. Rouse, Sr., started with one small grocery store in Houma, Louisiana. He was a true food and business entrepreneur who, along with a second and third generation, grew our family business into the one of the largest independent groceries in the country. Our grandfather's entrepreneurial spirit remains at the core of our business. We are just as committed to supporting new local food start-ups and our local farmers, fishermen, dairies, bakeries and manufacturers as he was more than 50 years ago.
