Luxury is overrated. it’s time for something FRESH. light-hearted and LIGHT- FOOTED, lux island resorts PRESENTS AN ALTOGETHER BRIGHTER PERFORMANCE. JOIN US IN celebrating the NATURE and FLAVOUR of island life… let the show begin.

Prologue

a note from the producer PAUL JONES

38 IN rehearsal Following a year of planning and rehearsals, the cast of LUX is ready to throw the spotlight on its brand new concept for island resort holidays. Having learned its lines, the Company is also ready to improvise and delight, presenting fresh and spontaneous experiences that celebrate the energy, colour and taste of island life.

10 Island Kitchen The islands of the Indian Ocean are colourful melting pots, blending culinary influences from India, Sri Lanka, Africa, France and China. Rich with an abundance of seasonal produce and fresh fruit, LUX* is proud to present the authentic flavours of Mauritius, La RÊunion and the Maldives. On each island, there’s an exciting array of street foods to be discovered and our restaurants are cooking up a selection of mouth-watering dishes influenced by this authentic island cuisine. Born up a tree!

ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL

19 Beanbags, benches and hammocks As you wander through our resorts, you’ll come across coloured beanbags scattered around the beach, the pools or simply laid invitingly on the grass in quiet enclaves or our jardins d’herbes. Slung between windward palms, giant hammocks invite you to enjoy slow moments of languid sanctuary while organic benches – handmade and surprisingly comfortable – are dotted around the grounds. Who knows, you may even discover one of our al fresco magazine libraries, perfect if you set out without your book. Take a seat, enjoy a quiet read, listen to some tunes or just sit back and chill, with the birds and the distant surf as your only soundtrack.

31 Let the sun shine on

25 Got to pack a picnic or two Fancy a change of scenery? How about settling down somewhere secluded with a picnic basket brimming with tasty snacks and chilled drinks for a leisurely lunch en plein air? Seek out your own private spot or ask for directions to a hidden corner and we’ll take care of everything else. Unfold a straw beach mat and enjoy a variety of plates showcasing local ingredients, fresh breads, crisp salads, hot and cold courses, wines from both the old world and new, indulgent desserts and fresh fruit. Kids will love our junior platters topped off with lashings of ‘ici’ ice cream or frozen yoghurt. And when you’ve had your fill, there’s no need to pay the bill or rush off – simply lie back and relax. Minimum effort. Maximum delight.

Would you like to sit outside with your book but away from the pool? What if the cabanas are occupied and the thatched parasols are already taken? There is always your balcony, which is perfectly cool and accommodating, but maybe just a little too far from the surf. What do you do? Don’t worry, we have the solution: a LUX* Sombrilla. A first in the Indian Ocean, our sombrillas allow you to wander along the beach to find a secluded spot and yet still enjoy the shade. Part tent, part parasol, the sombrilla is a colourful canopy that’s simple to erect using light poles, pegs and ropes, which all stow away conveniently into a small bag. Manufactured from 100% cotton and 95% UV protective, they’ve been made for us by the Australian sun protection specialists, Hollie & Harrie, and they’re available in a vibrant spectrum of island light colours.

36 Strictly island dancing

27 The arty set For many, the perfect island holiday involves nothing more taxing than reclining on a beach bed, immersed in a good book as the day ticks gently by. But every now and then, even the most somnolent of us may get itchy feet. We believe that a great vacation should offer you choices. How about something different, something engaging? At LUX*, we’re celebrating the creativity of the wide variety of local artists who depict the myriad scenes of daily island life. Artworks by some of these local artists, including our own cast members, are exhibited weekly and are available to purchase. But why not go further and indulge your own inner artist? Guests at LUX* will also be encouraged to try their own hand by joining one of our regular painting, drawing or photography classes. Who knows, you may discover that you’re the next Monet. Failing that, perhaps we can help you to record your holiday experience in a new and exciting way.

When it comes to evening entertainment, LUX* is on a mission to liberate you from the same old, same old. So you won’t find any cheesy cabaret singers, out-of-tune cover bands or honky-tonk piano in our resorts. Instead, we’re promoting the culture and talent that resides on the islands of Mauritius, La Réunion and the Maldives. What’s more, we would like you to join in the fun. On Mauritius, for example, you can not only watch but try out your own moves as you sway to the Sega, a traditional combination of music and dance with its origins in the ritual music of Madagascar. Joyful, carefree and lively, Sega is the musical expression of Mauritius and before long you’ll be moving in tune to its pulsating beats, mirroring the moves of our highly trained, not to mention patient dancers. Be prepared to lose your inhibitions.

13 Shirley Page Renowed aromatherapist Shirley Page has a unique understanding of essential oils, so we invited her to create a collection of spa and beauty products for LUX*. Based on her years of research and clinical experience, Shirley has developed an exclusive range of organic oils for the brand, featuring four facial oils – Deeply Hydrating, Ultra Calm, Cellular Regeneration and Deeply Cleansing – as well as four special body oils – Destress, Energising, Meta-Boost and Island Flowers. Forming the basis of the signature treatments within our spas and available to take home from our boutiques, you can also sample Shirley’s products in the privacy of your room through our unique Spa Privé service.

Worm your way to the top

Honestly Healthy

Every week and in common with all hotels, the LUX* resorts have to dispose of many tons of organic, biodegradable waste, including paper, coffee grains, fruit and vegetable peelings. Normally, this waste is transported by diesel-guzzling trucks to landfill or recycling depots, at some cost not only to the environment but also creating unwelcome extra traffic on the small island roads. But LUX* is far from normal and we’ve enlisted one of Mother Nature’s own greatest recyclers to take on the job: the humble earthworm. Well hundreds of thousands of them actually! Hidden away in our garden sheds, these friendly wrigglers munch away quietly on all that waste and, in the process, they happen to produce one of the best fertilisers known to man, which we use to feed our gardens!

Honestly Healthy is an innovative new range of balanced and alkaline vegetarian foods created by celebrity organic chef Natasha Corrett and leading nutritional therapist Vicki Edgson. Natasha and Vicki have worked with LUX* to devise a selection of healthy but tasty dishes for our restaurants that will work in harmony with your body. You’ll find these options marked clearly on all our menus. Rich in minerals and vitamins, fruit juices are the perfect healthy fast food alternative. Honestly Healthy have also helped us to create an evolving menu of delicious and cleansing fresh juices, smoothies, boosters and wheatgrass shots. They’re packed with immunity-boosting vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Reawakening your love of all things fresh and fruity, they’ll leave you feeling refreshed and re-energised.

high tea light We’ve called high noon on the stuffy old hotel afternoon tea. Instead, recline on beanbags and watch patiently as your chosen infusion deepens in colour inside a glass teapot. Then relax, knowing that the plate of goodies arriving shortly will neither dampen your appetite for dinner nor pander to your paunch. A menu of speciality teas is complemented by three delectable courses of light island fare. First, savoury finger sandwiches filled neatly with local delicacies selected to complement the traditional sliced cucumber. Next, warm scones served with glistening mango jam and soy-free vegan whipped cream. Last, and by no means least, a vintage tea tray overflowing with island gâteaux and tartlelettes.

34

MARKET DAY In recent years, neighbourhood markets have become popular throughout Europe. Reflecting a growing disdain for global grocery chains, markets are nurturing a renewed appreciation and demand for gourmet foods, organic produce from regional farmers and growers, artisan goods, fresh juices and boutique wines. The islands of the Indian Ocean are also home to a variety of vibrant local markets and on a weekly basis, LUX* invites its guests to leave the cocooning walls of the resort to explore and experience the hubbub of traditional island markets. Sample typical street foods like Gâteaux Piments (deep fried lentil balls) and Dholl Puri (a spicy pancake filled with lentils) or Bilimbi Confit (a very bitter fruit dressed with vinegar). The intrepid can also sample Chevrettes – tiny shrimps that are washed down with Agar Alouda – a jelly-like seaweed drink that leaves quite an impression in your mouth.

the LUX ISLAND BURger Meatier, juicier and tastier, the LUX* island burger is a patty of pedigree and a burger for others to beat. Our burgers contain only the finest prime Australian rump, a soupçon of fat to keep things tasty and a twist of sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper. It’s then grilled to perfection on a barbeque steel plate and served in your choice of wholemeal, white or ciabatta bun. Additions include red onion, lettuce, homemade mayonnaise and mustard. A slice of fresh lettuce, a side of hot French fries and a secret recipe for homemade tomato ketchup, top off the order. Et voilà.

32

phone home Hotels used to profit from overpriced international phone calls before mobile phones tipped the balance back in favour of the guest. Now it’s the mobile phone networks who are cashing in as they charge an arm and a leg for roaming. We believe that holidays should be stress free, which is why if you explore our grounds you’ll find an old telephone box that houses a VOIP phone, which will let you make local and international calls free of charge. We just ask one thing. Please do not call the office!

37

Photo shack We all love a bit of nostalgic fun especially when we’re at the seaside, so we’re inviting you and your family to squeeze into one of our digital photo booths for a spontaneous, happy snappy photo shoot. But don’t expect the grubby metal boxes you’re used to in shopping malls and railway stations. Housed in chic wooden shacks, our booths are painted in vibrant colours, so when you happen across one, be prepared to relax and pull some silly faces. You can print your photos too and this very clever photo shack will even send them to your Facebook account to share with your friends.

15

MINIBAR Hotel minibars – you’ve opened one, you’ve seen them all. We’ve all come to expect the routine and uninspired contents: old school Scotch, high sugar carbonated drinks and tiny tubes of overpriced crisps. This is your holiday so why can’t you select the kind of minibar you would like? Even our standard option is lighter and brighter. Expect fresh lemonade, rooibos iced tea, organic juices, our own Earth (still) and Dance (sparkling) waters, wholesome bites and local beers. On request, these can be supplemented by more unusual amenities such as chilled water atomisers, swimming goggles, puzzles and the occasional quirky surprise. One recent couple asked for a chilled cucumber in their minibar from which they cut refreshing patches to soothe their eyes after a long flight. We were happy to oblige.

ISLAND LIGHT WHAT IS ISLAND LIGHT? It’s about celebrating island life. Why do island resorts cocoon and shield their guests from life beyond the hotel walls. At LUX*, we present the authentic nature, flavours and wares of Mauritus, La Réunion and the Maldives – sans sauce.

It’s about enjoying light living. We’re reinvigorating the island resort, simplifying things to produce a cleaner, fresher experience through an approach that is more playful and more lighthearted. After all, LUX* doesn’t stand for luxury – it promises light.

pop up Stay at a conventional resort and before long you’ll know where everything is. At LUX , however, we’re in touch with our impromptu side. You came on holiday to escape routine so why would you wish to find more here? We take pleasure in surprising you with delightful pop-up treats: an ice cream cart here, a fresh coconut stall there. One evening find a secret bar. Later that night, join friends to track a shooting star. Al fresco dining, private picnics, DIY spa packs and hidden goodies maintain our spontaneous approach. There one day and gone the next, we promise to keep things fresh and constantly evolving.

starry, starry night The Southern Cross, the Milky Way, distant and infinitesimal galaxies. Enjoying negligible light pollution, the night skies of the Indian Ocean can be quite simply spellbinding. LUX* is all about light so how appropriate we thought it would be to introduce mobile observatories to enable you to take a closer look at the incandescence of the heavens above. Knowledgeable and amusing guides will inform and inspire you with facts about the constellations and fascinating tales and legends from island folklore. Whether you’re in Mauritius, La Réunion or the Maldives, a starry night in the Indian Ocean is truly special. Once seen, never forgotten.

lux me Would you like to leave behind that feeling of overwork and heaviness once and for all? Do you like to look forward to going home knowing how to sustain the brighter spirits that you’ve enjoyed on holiday? LUX* Me is a comprehensive and fully integrated wellbeing philosophy. More than a programme, it represents a step by step path to a better and healthier way of life. Naturally, we offer pilates and yoga classes, a meditation space, al fresco classes and we provide specialist personal trainers who focus on you and your requirements, not just computerised contraptions. LUX* Me is all about you – if that makes sense. You spend the rest of the year working and looking after the needs of others. Here’s your chance to put number one first.

Island resorts are natural magnets for people wishing to escape their fast-paced, urban lifestyles. But after three or four days of doing nothing and catching up on sleep, some of us get itchy feet and may fancy upping the pace now and then. If you’re one of us and would like the party to continue when the band stops, LUX* has developed a late entertainment excursion service where we’ll accompany you to popular island hotspots. Whatever vibe you’re looking for – chilled out beach party, pumping club or a glass of bubbly at a chichi lounge, we know the see and be seen and can also arrange guestlist access with a little notice. We’ll even make sure you get there and back in one piece, no matter how high your heels or how potent the local rum. Lionel Richie, eat your heart out. Let the music play on.

you’ll never watch alone If you are a sports fanatic and can’t bear the thought of missing a major sporting event, welcome to Final Whistle – an impromptu area that we’ll set up whenever there’s a big match on. Embracing the notion of sport as a social ritual, fans of all colours can gather to catch up on the latest action accompanied by ice-cold beers, fruit juices and deliciously indulgent snacks such as burgers, chips and lamb shawarma wraps. Some evening fixtures may be projected on our Screen on the Beach, while daytime games will be shown in the Bar, but whatever sport you’re into – from football, rugby, cricket and tennis to the Olympics (Summer and Winter) or Formula One racing, you can enjoy all the action with a generous side order of atmosphere thrown in.

Game, set & match Here at LUX*, we are not averse to a bit of friendly competition and we even encourage a little family or interguest rivalry. It’s all in good spirit though so ultra-competitive dads please stay ringside! From time to time we’ll set up a new game in a new location, so whether you’re a village century maker, a volleyball voyeur, a soccer star in the making or a badminton bad boy, there’ll be plenty of opportunity to show us your reverse sweep, Pele strike or overhead smash. For active souls rather less inclined to throwing themselves around the sand, there’s aqua aerobics, pétanque, croquet and more, with indoor games available from reception and outdoor games scattered around the grounds. Let the games begin.

23

The sound of music There’s nothing quite like the classics. And we’re not talking about Julie Andrews here, although she could yodel the goats off a Swiss mountain. No, we refer to Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven and Rachmaninov et al. Exquisite? Yes. In the Indian Ocean? Maybe not. LUX* has cut the sombre classics, lazy jazz, pan pipe medleys and predictable bands. LUX* Island Resorts have been conceived as multi-sensory places for which our toneperfect sound architects, Ben Bridgewater and Dan Lywood, have curated a varied and sensitive music collection. Whether you’re dining by the sea, enjoying a massage or chilling by the pool, we’ll make sure that your aural receptors will be washed in top tunes and not drowned in Baccarat or Bach.

14 We can’t always promise clear skies above the Indian Ocean but, with your help, we can guarantee a clear conscience. It sounds crazy but finding fresh, tasty ice cream in an island resort is often as difficult as locating the proverbial ‘needle in a haystack’. Until now. We think that a beach holiday without ice cream isn’t a beach holiday at all and so we’ve created our very own ice cream brand, ‘ici’. Seek out the retro-styled parlours and mobile carts and order a generous serving of low-fat ice cream bursting with interesting combinations of island grown ingredients. The kids will remember these flavoursome indulgences for years to come. ‘ici’ is served in biodegradable punnets with wooden scoops or why not try our tasty handmade waffle cones, which will be baked, formed and hardened as you wait? Crunch. Munch. Perfect after lunch.

MOLLY (BEAR) loves TO VOLLEY

50 Yes chef! LUX* Island Resorts are your gateways to the bountiful flavours, colours and wares of the Indian Ocean and we like to encourage our guests to explore the local culture firsthand. You flew thousands of miles to get here; it’d be a pity not to find out more about the place. One way we’ve dreamed up for you to taste island life is to try your own hand at preparing and cooking some of the region’s most delectable dishes. To assist, we’ve developed a series of masterclasses with acclaimed local chefs. It’s a unique opportunity to explore the vast spectrum of flavours and influences that make up the cuisines of Mauritius, La Réunion and the Maldives. Followed by dinner at the chef’s table, your lesson will be fun and memorable, providing a fascinating peak behind the scenes while adding a new dish or two to your culinary repertoire.

39 I did it my way Rather than rely on a professional wedding planner, some couples may prefer to use their own talents to produce a creative and more personal wedding. LUX* will support such individualists by helping them to imagine and design their own unique celebration. Our DIY wedding service features an evolving menu of light-hearted activities that brides and grooms can direct and participate in themselves. It all makes for a memorable day that won’t break the bank. A bride might fashion her own bouquet in fresh flowers handpicked from the local market. Assisted by one of our pastry chefs, the newlyweds might choose to decorate their own cake with delightfully coloured icing. By choosing to get married on a tropical island, you’ve already said you’re different. LUX* will help you to vive la difference!

40 ‘Earth’ and ‘Dance’ waters Why import water when our islands are literally surrounded by the stuff? It’s a no-brainer. Drawn from volcanic rocks beneath the earth, or the ocean itself, our refreshing mineral and purified waters are either sourced or purified and bottled right here on the islands. Whilst keeping our Chief Hydro Officers gainfully employed, our island water factories also eliminate hundreds of thousands of unnecessary ‘water miles’. What’s more, if we continued to use plastic containers for our water, each resort would dispose of 170,000 bottles every year! As our passion for preserving the natural beauty of the Indian Ocean knows no bounds, we’ve used some fetching glass bottles instead. What a refreshing change.

29 Teddy Tennis When you take your children on holiday you want them to have an exciting, fun-packed time. Rest assured. From treasure hunts and sand castle competitions to water sports and outdoor games, the LUX* PLAY programme offers a variety of activities to keep the kids entertained. One of our favourites is Teddy Tennis, which encourages children of 5 and under to stay healthy by learning how to play tennis. Music helps them grasp the concepts of rhythm and timing, while images of teddy bears in motion show them how to play. Different bears like different things… Molly Bear loves to volley. Boris Bear loves to bounce the ball. Playful and engaging, Teddy Tennis keeps the kids active whilst capturing their young imaginations.

At LUX* we believe that if we’re going to do something, we may as well do it right – especially when it comes to food. Take our authentic Italian pizzas. We’ve done our research and perfected traditional techniques honed in Naples over three centuries. Expect thin bases topped with rustic ingredients baked in wood-fired ovens built by skilled artisans. Nothing beats a piping hot pizza, sliced in front of you with a healthy twist of the pepper mill. Open throughout the day, our pizzerias are ideal for families and friends. Drop in, enjoy the ambience and delight in our mouthwatering platters and family-style sharing menus. You can even learn how to make your own, topping your base with juicy plum tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, buffalo mozzarella, basil and fresh herbs picked straight from our gardens. It’s fast food at its best – healthy, easy to make and supremely tasty. Buon appetito!

We all know that it can break from the norm to allow yourself to step back and focus on your own fitness and wellbeing. And where better than on a pristine beach at the water’s edge? At LUX*, we’ll help you take the first steps towards a healthier you by introducing you to special fitness programmes designed by ex-pro sportsman Stephen Price. Stephen and Jeff Butterworth, our Chief Wellness Officer, have married traditional fitness elements with yoga, pilates, massage, nutrition and relaxation to create packages that are geared to specific results. With names like Power Blast, Turbo Booster and Lean and Clean, our high intensity, results-driven programmes are based on sports science research. They’re designed to help you gain the best physical results in the shortest period of time. Sound a little taxing? As they say, no pain no gain, but we also promise it will be fun.

33 Community chest Unless you’ve been stranded on Mars for the last 76 years, you’ll be aware of the global popularity of the board game Monopoly. Since its introduction in 1935, over 275 million Monopoly sets have been sold in 43 languages and in 111 countries. It’s estimated that more than one billion people have played the game. In fact, it’s so popular that if you were stuck on Mars, you’d probably find a game run by the locals. No surprise then that at LUX* we’re getting into Monopoly too. This, however, will be a game with a difference; Monopoly that makes a difference. Join us in a villa or a suite where we will set up the game and convert the Monopoly money “winnings” of the victor into a real currency donation to one of our carefully screened and approved community projects. Not only do you get the satisfaction of winning, you’re quite literally lending your hand to the local population.

04 Café LUX* On every high street, we’ve grown accustomed to great beans, interesting blends, vibey baristas and a comfy space in which to relax and enjoy coffee at its best. So, why is a good coffee so difficult to find in a hotel? Never mind the prices! We think good coffee is a must, so at the heart of each of our resorts, you’ll find our Café LUX*, a true café experience designed for seaside sitting, sipping and surfing. If you love coffee, you’ll be delighted by our Island Blend, an organic mix created for us by Carl and Judd, founders of Cape Town’s acclaimed artisan roaster, Deluxe Coffeeworks. On the side, enjoy delicious pastries, complimentary WI-FI and a selection of magazines from around the world. We actually roast organic green beans here on the island and we’re schooling our staff in the ways of the barista. Look out for “B” badges worn by our team members who’ve graduated Bschool. It takes time and dedication to make fine coffee but you know something? It’s worth it.

SCRUCAP A capsule collection of outstanding South African wines, handpicked for your quaffing pleasure by our Chief Slurper, Kent Scheermeyer.

Say farewell to corks and old world wines and say hi to Scrucap – a collection of exclusive South African wines individually selected for LUX*. Visiting wineries located in some of the southern hemisphere’s oldest and most fertile wine growing regions, Kent tasted literally hundreds of wines from wineries large and small. It sounds a tough job we know but someone had to do it! Fortunately, Kent kept his wits about him and as soon as he tasted anything extraordinary, he persuaded the winery to put aside a few barrels just for LUX*.

Our bars and restaurants feature extensive international wine lists but if you’re seeking the perfect marriage of quality and value we’d suggest that you raise a glass to Scrucap. And if you’re wondering why we chose such a strange, playful name, just take a look at the bottles. They’re all topped off with a screw cap, all but one that is. If you’re celebrating a special occasion or feeling a little more indulgent than usual, try Popcap, our deliciously dry and crisp Cap Classique. Perfect when chilled, simply pop, pour, propose a toast and savour the bubbles.

SCREEN ON THE BEACH Saunter across the sand after dinner and you may well stumble across our impromptu, al fresco cinema.

Sommeliers and corks – they’re both taking a back seat at LUX The screw caps used on our special collection of South African wines reduce the risk of ‘corking’ and oxidation and are kinder to the planet. We’re also dispensing with the formality of old world titles, so rather than appoint a head sommelier, we invited wine supremo Kent Scheermeyer to share his pick of the crop. Sofas, beanbags, rugs and blankets all form part of this cosy scene. Take your pick and sink into your seat in front of a large screen erected between two palm trees or stretched across a wood frame. The projector flickers, the screen comes to life and you’re transported – from art house films and world cinema to blockbusters and kids’ classics. The sound echoes romantically around the setting – celluloid voices punctuating the evening silence, the soundtrack mixing rhythmically with the music of the lagoon waves. And it wouldn’t be the cinema without nibbles, so there’s fresh popcorn on the house, trays of ‘ici’ ice cream and, of course, drinks served right to your seat. Cinema Paradiso? We think so.

20 snap, crackle... Did you know… Popcorn is one of the oldest forms of corn thought to be about 5,600 years old. Archaeologists in Peru found ancient kernels of popcorn in tombs that were so well preserved they can still pop. During the Great Depression, popcorn was so cheap at 5 –10 cents a bag, that as other businesses failed, the popcorn business thrived and became a source of income for struggling farmers. In popcorn jargon, a popped kernel of corn is known as a ‘flake’.

Uncommon sense

Man could live on this bread alone

We’ve designed LUX* Island Resorts as multi-sensory places, embracing the sights, sounds, flavours, wares and perfumes of the Indian Ocean islands. It’s an experience that unfolds with subtlety and sensitivity as you explore the different aspects of island life. Enjoy a private, self-applied spa treatment using bath oils infused with island spices. Indulge in sea harvested oysters shucked at your table, drizzled in piquant sauces and washed down with a chilled, South African Sauvignon Blanc. Close your eyes and inhale deeply as a local vendor prepares a roti chaud in front of your eyes, spooning butter bean curry (or Gros Pois) and Rougaille (a spicy tomato sauce) into a stone baked wrap. See the sun go down and watch a projected image creating playful light patterns that dance around the beach. Revel in the vibrant colour and pulsating rhythms of local musicians and dancers. Celebrate each and every moment. LUX* is a feast for the senses.

Imagine the appetising, warm wafts of baking bread on the cool morning air. At LUX*, you’ll be jumping out of bed early and hotfooting it to our Island Light bakeries for flaky, melt-in-the-mouth croissants, pains bursting with raisins and chocolate, rustic crostata, brioche á tête, sticky Danish pastries and healthy muffins. Under the expert supervision of boulanger pâtisier, Christian Gonthier, we honour the artisan artistry and traditions of Parisian bakeries and the influence of French cuisine on the islands of Mauritius and La Réunion. Soon, you’ll be strolling back to your villa in the morning sun, a bag of warm croissants in one hand, a bout de pain in the other, tearing off the top as your finder’s reward. Bonjour.

18 Jardin d’herbes We invite you to step gently into the fragrant and enchanting world of our herb gardens where you’ll encounter a scene of sensorial repose. Perfumed, sheltered idylls, these jardins d’herbes offer a change of scenery for guests looking to dine al fresco but out of the sun and away from the social purr of our restaurants. These charming oases also supply our kitchens with fresh ingredients – grown on-site to keep food miles to a minimum as part of our desire to protect the island environment. Reserve a spot for an intimate lunch or dinner, help our chefs pick some fresh herbs and savour the senses as they prepare your private table d’hôte.

45 The LUX* journal You don’t just spend money on a wellearned holiday, but your equally precious time too. Most people only enjoy a few weeks away from work each year and that makes the time that we get with our loved ones and families all the more treasured. This is something we recognise at LUX* where we like to help people to celebrate life because each moment matters. Every guest that arrives at a LUX* resort receives a personal copy of the LUX* Journal. It’s a special notebook that we’ve designed to help you to record the special moments of your time with us. There are diary pages that allow you to plan your days, noting spa appointments, golf tee times or tennis lessons. We’ve included blank pages for doodling or capturing those flashes of inspiration that happen upon you whilst relaxing on a beach. There are convenient pockets for photos, tickets or tags and there’s even a section where you can record your own tasting notes on our exclusive range of Scrucap wines.

49 Photo safaris Through special partnerships that we have entered into with local photographers, LUX* is able to organise a series of guided photographic excursions – or ‘safaris’ – to inspirational locations across Mauritius, La Réunion and the Maldives. A Nature Safari takes in indigenous wildlife, flora, beaches, waterfalls and mountains, while Spiritual Safaris explore brightly coloured temples and beachside churches. Our Sporting Safari will help you develop your timing skills as you attempt to capture the action of sporting events like Mauritian horse racing, while our Market Safari provides another great opportunity to find interesting and challenging subjects found in island life.

21 Cake boss There’s nothing more inviting and celebratory than a cake gleaming with decadent icing, especially if you’ve made it with your own two hands! For special occasions and everyday children’s treats, pop into one of our unique cake decorating bars. Choose from a variety of pre-baked cakes and cupcakes and, with a helping hand from one of our passionate pastry chefs, let your creative spirit run free. With delicious butter and ganache icings, chocolate buttons, hundreds and thousands, sugar flowers, real blooms and lots more, this is perfect for kids (both large and small) who like to create their own yummy treats.

A wardrobe on wheels appears in a clearing. Then it’s gone, only to reappear two days later at the far end of the beach.
