A Need for Action: What is the project “Developing awareness and professional skills of IP tools in Tanzania?”

In a vastly changing and expanding global economy, IP rights and innovations are meant to spur the development of economies and societies, and act as vital determinants facilitating broad-based, accelerated and sustainable growth and development.

There is great need to strengthen innovation, research and development capacities in Tanzania. Several interventions over the years have focused on building capacity in the country. However, gaps remain in connecting capacity to policy in order to effectively create/develop IP, protect IP and facilitate the partnerships to commercialize IP. Cognizant of these present gaps and the merits of innovation as a strategic tool for economic growth and national development, the seven month (June 2016-January 2017) project “Developing awareness and professional skills of IP tools in Tanzania”, supports the development of IP awareness and professional skills among design4

ated Tanzanian and East African stakeholders across public, academic and private sectors to stimulate and enhance local, regional and international export capacities.

Our approach is to: »» utilize tools for user and market testing, as REALITY matters »» utilize methods for identifying, developing, protecting and disseminating IP, and SUSTAINABILITY and KNOWLEDGE matters »» utilize tools for pro– and preto – typing, as PRACTICE matters »» utilize tools for engaging innovators, as RELATION matters »» utilize tools for design thinking and idea development, as MINDSET matters.

Overall Objective, Project Purpose and Expected Results Overall Objective—to create awareness and develop professional skills of IP tools as a trade catalyst and means to enhance local, regional and international export capacity.

Project Purpose—to promote a greater understanding of IP tools and management practice among key stakeholders at public, academic and private levels to contribute to the enhancement of export capacities of economic operators.

Result 1: conduct a situation analysis on the status of Tanzania’s IP systems and institutional framework; meet with the beneficiary and key stakeholders to explore methodology and training module content.

Result 2: through a five day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop in Moshi and a five day ToT workshop in Dar Es Salaam, train 40 junior and senior staff in capacity building training sessions.

Result 3: raise awareness on IP and training modules used during ToT throughout a two-day regional seminar of up to 55 participants including public, private and academic stakeholders; select EAC representatives; and relevant national IP protection and enforcement agencies.

Case studies; best practices; local, regional and international experiences; tailoring of specific documents (IP policy, road maps); creating of and working towards achieving short-term goals set by participants.

Offline tools and online platforms allowing participants to: access training material; network with fellow participants; download and upload assignments; follow workshop lectures; explore more in-depth pertinent topics; and maintain remote contact with experts.
