The Bernadotte collection is inspired by a 1938 sterling silver milk jug designed Sigvard Bernadotte. The collection took the elegant riffled lines of the Art Deco original and applied them to a series of tableware.

Born into the Swedish royal family, Prince Sigvard Bernadotte was one of Georg Jensen’s most successful and popular collaborators. Influenced by the functionalist movement, his elegant and sophisticated designs helped modernise the world of silver craft.

Born in 1907, Prince Sigvard Bernadotte was trained at Stockholm’s Royal Art Academy. He was greatly influenced by an exhibition of Gunnar Asplund in 1930 which marked the breakthrough of functionalism in design and this aesthetic governed his subsequent long collaboration with Georg Jensen. His sleek and sparingly-decorated work was in stark contrast to the ornamentation of earlier silver craft and this modernity was a perfect match for the new fun-loving society of the time. The fact that his pieces still resonate with today’s generations is a testament to his skill and the reason he has a firm place in the history of Scandinavian design.

HELLE DAMKJÆR DESIGN BLOOM / INDULGENCE

The Danish designer Helle Damkjær is a perfect example of how esteemed designers today work with many different categories of design. Her natural sense for trendsetting aesthetics has already resulted in successful collaborations with luxury brands in New York, Tokyo, Paris and Copenhagen.

Helle Damkjær has for a number of years created designs for Georg Jensen. The minimalist functionality and beauty of form that characterizes her work places her firmly within the classic tradition of Danish design with a twist. In line with her minimalist predecessors, Helle has a unique feel for functional beauty and simple details while her designs convey an inner harmony. Her “Bloom Bowl” for Georg Jensen can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Many of her designs have through time earned praise and prizes, including the Red Dot Design Award, Wallpaper Magazine Design Award, Design Plus Award and Danish Beauty Award. Furthermore Helle Damkjær has on many occasions been shortlisted in The International Yearbook of Design.

CONSTANTIN WORTMANN

DESIGN COBRA

Born in 1970 in Germany, Constantin Wortmann studied design in Munich before working with legendary lamp designer Ingo Mauer. Later he co-founded influential agency Büro für Form from where he undertook furniture, interior and lighting projects.

He is an expert at working with very advanced computer programmes and evolves natural organic shapes entirely on screen before making them real. As a result, his work is precise and controlled but still with an emotional pull in its use of shape.

Constantin Wortmann always strives to inject a playful element in his work, believing that design need not be taken too seriously. His motto is ‘form follows emotions’ and so he takes archetypal objects and then redesigns them by adding something quirky that evokes a reaction from the consumer. He is responsible for some of Georg Jensen’s most popular pieces.

RIKKE HAGEN DESIGN FACET

Rikke Hagen is primarily known for her glass and ceramic work. Rikke Hagen takes a great deal of care over the actual design process. She produces many abstract sketches before deciding how they can be adapted into something both beautiful and practical.

After graduating from Denmark’s Design School in 1998, Rikke Hagen set up her own unique glass workshop, producing her own limited editions that elevated glass wear to the very highest level of design and quality.

Her collaboration with Georg Jensen continues this path with a series of vases that use the very best materials and finish but which function perfectly at their desired purpose of displaying flowers.

Design was in Søren Georg Jensen’s blood - after all, his father was the legendary Georg Jensen himself. Using his training as a sculptor along with the heritage of his family, Jensen carved his own place in the history of Danish design with his controlled functionalist lines and strong visual sense.

Born in 1917, Jensen was initially trained as a silver–smith by his own father, and then enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts to study sculpture. Influenced greatly by postwar European functionalism, Jensen’s large scale work is found in many public places across Copenhagen, often characterised by its abstract geometric form.

From 1962 to 1974 he took over his father’s role by becoming Artistic Director at Georg Jensen where he not only created both holloware and jewellery but also inspired a whole new generation of designers, there–fore becoming himself an important element of the company’s history.

ALFREDO HÄBERLI DESIGN ALFREDO

Alfredo Häberli was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1964. He moved to Switzerland in 1977 and graduated 1991 with distinction in Industrial Design at the Höhere Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich.

Today, he is an internationally established designer based in Zurich and is working for some of the leading companies of the international design industry such as Alias, BD Barcelona, Camper, Georg Jensen, Iittala, Kvadrat, Luceplan, Moroso, Schiffini and Vitra. He manages to unite tradition with innovation, joy and energy in his designs and his work is strongly influenced by his early childhood in Argentina as well as his curiousness and studies in everyday life. The results are works with a strong expression and emotionality. Alfredo Häberli’s work and design have been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe and he has received many awards for his work during the past 16 years.

He was awarded by A&W magazine (Architektur & Wohnen) as the «Designer of the Year 2009» and honoured with a monograph exhibition on the occasion of the international furniture fair - imm cologne. His collection for Georg Jensen has so far been honoured with prestigious awards.

Henning Koppel is responsible for what we have come to think of as “Danish design”.

Henning Koppel’s designs broke new ground for Georg Jensen with expansive and beautiful shapes. His designs are constructed in clean lines and exude warmth, a true feat of expertise.

Koppel’s designs tempers the strict rules of functionalism with organic, lifelike shapes. His mission was to make everyday life products beautiful as well as practical. He was trained as a sculptor and began collaborating with Georg Jensen in 1946.

Henning Koppel showed an early talent for art, leading him to train in both drawing and aquarelle early on. He continued studies in sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy and later in Paris. His superb drafting skills, developed as a child, helped him in to produce outstanding product renderings of his designs. Even on their own, they form an exceptional body of work.

Central to Aurélien Barbry’s design aesthetic is his desire to bring together both functionality and beauty. He aims to take simple objects from daily life and look at how they could be designed in a different and more elegant way without compromising their performance.

French-born Aurélien Barbry graduated as an industrial and interior designer from the Ecole Camondo in Paris before starting his career in the studio of legendary architect Jean Nouvel. Since then he has worked on projects in the world of furniture and product design as well as store interiors.

Aurélien believes that functionality should always be the starting point for product design and so places a great emphasis on performance whilst adding a strong Scandinavian aesthetic. The results are sculptural and elegant but always practical. He loves natural shapes and asymmetry and works by hand with pencil and paper to evolve exactly the right curve and balance for his pieces.

British-born Ilse Crawford likes to put the human being at the centre of her design work, believing that her products should enhance everyday real life.

She is known for her practical but aesthetic approach to design.

Starting her career as an architect, then moving into publishing before starting her own design consultancy agency has given Ilse Crawford a wide range of experience that allows her to look at product design as part of a total lifestyle. She works on interior projects for hotels, restaurants and bars whilst designing lighting systems and products that can work within them.

She started working with Georg Jensen in 2012.

Ilse likes to surround herself with inspiration and enjoys researching traditional designs then adapting them and renewing them to make them more relevant for today’s living. She is fascinated by textures and surfaces and her work always has a tactile aspect that gives it a warmth and soul.
