ooking for a special kind of haute cuisine? The new Circle of Champions Luncheon and Fashion Show is just the ticket. Presented by Baker Motor Company, this CFW event beneath the tents in Marion Square pairs a runway show by Pearl boutique with courses prepared by top chefs Sean Brock of McCrady’s and Husk, Mike Lata of FIG, and Michelle Weaver of Charleston Grill. hen the Emerging Designer Competition: East entries started pouring in last fall, we noticed wedding gowns showing up in the portfolios. Since Saturday mornings at CFW find the main tent transformed into a grand reception hall where the Charleston Weddings Magazine Spring Bridal Show plays out, we decided it was time for an offshoot contest. And so the Charleston Weddings Emerging Bridal Designer Competition was born. The winner (who, like the CFW Emerging Designers, has to be an aspiring, up-and-coming talent) scores his or her own runway show, to debut Saturday under the tent alongside nationally renowned collections. Through December 2011, residents from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida were invited to submit their work to a panel of judges, including Carol Hannah (a Project Runway and

Mikasa La’Charles On Her Fall 2012 Collection: avajo meets Hollywood in my fall collection, which uses upholstery-weight fabrics and dyed silk; earth tones complemented by rich hues; and chiffon and lace paired with fur, feathers, and leather. Each look has an element of the risqué, selectively revealing the back or legs during a season in which the weather says they should be concealed. Long gowns, layered dresses, high-waisted hot pants, leggings, and outerwear will seduce the audience.
N Age: 27 Lives: Chesapeake, VA Designs: Women’s contemporary/ street-wear Label: Mikasa La’Charles Education: Self-taught Influences: Home décor and interior decorating magazines and books Personal Style: Luxurious, everlasting Website: mikasalacharles.com
Samantha Michele Hyman On Her Fall 2012 Collection: hildhood forms a very important theme in my work, as I am constantly inspired by a kind of playfulness. I love to see the world as it was before we were taught science and reason, and I believe discovery and wonder are possible at any stage in life. For this collection, I intend to mix heavy and soft textures, such as hand-knit sweaters.

“I bring whimsy, youth, and magic to my clothes. My aesthetic comes from a world that most of us left behind in childhood.”

Gil Tisdale Tsvetelina & Dominique Gerasimova Verona McAuliffe On Their Fall 2012 Collection: his collection laces futuristic, international city wear with a timeless undercurrent. Adrienne Antonson
Kristin & Robert Galmarini On Their Fall 2012 Collection: he most challenging part of designing children’s clothing is creating something fun and unique but also wearable. Our collection is comfortable, fashionable, and flexible; garments can grow with the child or be worn in different ways. And since soft T-shirts are what our daughter wants to wear most, we designed our line around knits. (To incorporate more delicate and decorative fabrics, we use amazing textiles for accessories.) We also love hand-making our items, but knowing that isn’t scalable for the brand we envision becoming, we decided to include a handmade screen print on every piece manufactured. We feel so strongly about keeping art alive that a portion of our proceeds will be donated to helping fund art and music in schools.
T Age: 29 Lives: Asheville, NC Designs: Women’s contemporary/ street-wear Label: STATE Education: BA in Studio Art at the College of Charleston; curator of the Green Revival Collection (2007, Sumter, SC); producer of The Side Show (2008, Charleston) Influences: Antique textiles, the environment, rural island life, and alpaca farming Personal Style: Unique but classically durable with reclaimed fabrics and handmade fibers Website: adrienneantonson.com
On Her Fall 2012 Collection: approach my designs from a sculptor’s perspective, blending natural and urban worlds into garments that are utilitarian yet romantic, solid yet soft. By repurposing materials from vintage shops, thrift stores, and yard sales, I am able to sustainably contribute to fashion, a skill that will become increasingly necessary as our world adapts to environmental constraints. My collection celebrates the beauty found in resourcefulness.

“We gather a lot of our inspiration from each other and our little, lovely family—our daily lives and our kids’ playful, carefree attitudes.”

Jessica Patricia Krupa
On Her Fall 2012 Collection: y concept, “reVAMPed,” stems from the current vampire craze in fiction and film and the rich history of this legend. The vampire has evolved into a symbol of seduction, so my swimwear features black and nude fabrics with mesh overlays, laced backs, and V-shaped “dagger” cuts. Based on research into Victorian-era corsetry, my suits are sexy yet supportive and comfortable with underwire and innovative boning; hourglass lines; light shirring; and high-quality materials that are eco-friendly, SPF-rated, chlorineresistant, and quick-drying. I believe in designing pieces that women can feel confident wearing on the beach or poolside.

“It’s not about looking like a size two in a string bikini, but embracing your curves with supportive fabrics and unique designs.” CHARLESTONFASHIONWEEK . CO M
Angela Sum On Her Fall 2012 Collection: y inspiration this season centers around snow and winter. Varying textures—silks, fish leather, cashmere, and knit wool— and shapes resembling soft snow, ice, and glaciers play into the collection in an organic way. And while shades of white and natural hues predominate, hand-dyed splashes of pinks and neon yellow offer a feeling of radiant sunlight. The winter experience here is more warm and delightful than lonely and windy.

Ra Jang On Her Fall 2012 Collection: s I was born in South Korea and have lived in many different countries, my work has been influenced by both Eastern and Western cultures. In this collection, I experiment with form and texture, incorporating silks, crêpe de Chine, Mongolian fur, rib-knit pieces, and leather to create a good balance between wearable art and commercial clothing.

Age: 25 Lives: New York, NY Designs: Women’s ready-to-wear Label: rara Education: BFA in Fashion Design at Virginia Commonwealth University; finalist in the IFTF Remix International Fur Design Competition (2009, Milan, Italy) Influences: Japanese design, minimal art, and Dutch graphic design Personal Style: Cleanly tailored and architectural yet still organic
Nina Awasum On Her Fall 2012 Collection: y work is often inspired by the culture of my native Cameroon. When creating this collection, I imagined a young concertgoer traveling from Africa to the Himalayas. Texture, rich coloring, and comfortable silhouettes are essential. You’ll see lots of pants, and I love the chic pairing of ankle-length dresses and skirts with exposed zippers for a feminine edginess. Cowry shell beading, leather, and yarn fringe provide runway appeal.

Nancy Faw Crowell On Her Fall 2012 Collection: hildren can enjoy wearing my vintage circus-inspired collection, which evokes the performers’ bright and cheerful clothing with primary hues. My versatile styles—such as the clown-like girl’s party dress or the boy’s plaid vest and pant set reminiscent of the ringmaster—take the well-dressed child from playtime to special occasions. But whether casual or dressy, all of the pieces are comfortable and fun to wear. The collection recalls a time when life’s pace was slower, but it is ready for today’s fashionable child.
C Age: 56 Lives: Murrells Inlet, SC Designs: Children’s ready-to-wear Label: Nancy Crowell Education: Self-taught Influences: Modern children, vintage designs, and colorful fabrics Personal Style: Stylish and functional for an active lifestyle
“I look to the past to find inspiration from vintage styles before I create a garment.”

Vartika Vikram On Her Fall 2012 Collection: his season, I am translating modernism into “soft sculpted” forms. My resort-wear practices three principles of the Bauhaus movement: volume rather than mass, balance over preconceived symmetry, and an expulsion of applied ornamentation. The resulting clothes are well-cut and simple, accented with minimal extravagances. You’ll see elegant fabrics that utilize Lycra for enhanced comfort and fit, tone-on-tone dots and stripes, and tea-dyed crêpe de Chine. My aim is to effect an interplay between flowing fabrics and geometric undertones and produce classically feminine and fluid garments that evoke a romantic urban mood.

Amy Cochran Quinn & Kelly Elizabeth Ruehlman On Their Fall 2012 Collection: his season, our muse is “Dahlia.” Elegant with an edge, she’s demure and sultry all at once. In an all-butempty museum, this quiet observer sits on a leather bench, waiting nonchalantly for something or someone to find her. Full of stark lines and subtle tones, our collection gives a nod to modernist architecture while paying tribute to eras of old. Dahlia comes to life in creams, blushes, and blues as well as smooth silk crepes, felted wool jackets, and draping knits.

Keely Lauren Cansler On Her Fall 2012 Collection: gained inspiration from the delicate complexities of the chandelier, be it a medieval spiked wooden candelabra or luxurious status symbol. The collection juxtaposes soft and hard elements, such as silk, metal sequins, and chain fringe, and I have repurposed antique chandelier components as embellishments and accessories. My patterns reflect the contrast between light and shadow while my fabrics were guided by the colors that beam through crystals. Like a chandelier, my collection is meant to be poised yet daring, delicate but robust.

Emily C. Pollard On Her Fall 2012 Collection: nspired by an image of a snake eating the Earth and talk of a 2012 doomsday, I began to wonder, “How would one dress for the end of the world?” This collection is based on collisions, cosmic and otherwise, juxtaposing the pampered with the survival-driven scavenger. Some looks appear to be melting— an aesthetic achieved by treating fabric with resin—while others are frozen and angular. Futuristic fabrics, velvets and furs, structured leather, and paper-thin knits mesh to make innovative clothing. With this presentation, I hope to turn a devastating catastrophe into an exclusive party.

Shelley Lucille Smith On Her Fall 2012 Collection: o create strong, empowering clothes, I envisioned the modern woman facing everyday battles, and I considered how we perceive ourselves—who we are versus who we think we are, the inner mind trying to match its outer self. This highly textured collection expresses how “armor” is both a great asset and a hindrance, how it can become our protection, preparation, fortitude, and vulnerability. To represent that, my garments boast metal studding, neck pieces, and closures.

Hannah Goff On Her Fall 2012 Collection: his season, a domestic series by photographer Laura Letinsky captured my attention. My collection evokes the modern woman’s complex position as both homemaker and career person by blending strong silhouettes with soft colors and materials like organza and cotton twill. Since textiles are my signature, I am creating my own prints, mixing traditionally domestic motifs with symbols of the 21st-century woman. By folding, pleating, and manipulating the fabric, I can further abstract the print and then add resin and silicone details in the style of textile artist Tzuri Gueta.

amie Ruth embodies the free spirit and kind heart of a world traveler,” says Savannah-based Emily Bargeron of her vibrant, retro-inspired label. hat will you be doing on doomsday? More importantly—at least to Mystery School creator Michael Wiernicki—what will you be wearing? “A collision of the past and the future,” his latest collection of women’s and men’s garments features awesomely original digital prints—some integrating the shape and cut of a piece and others at odds with an item in order to create tension. “I’m really excited about the timing of all this, because this is a thrilling era in which to live. The world is changing so fast, and we’re shaping the future for ourselves. Through fashion, I'm able to have some input on that future,” says the local designer, who gathers ideas and inspiration from comic books and electronic music. And given that he’s crafting surreal clothes suitable for an end-of-the-world celebration, it seems appropriate that Wiernicki describes his design process as making order out of chaos. So will you be ready to wear his ready-to-wear?

rom her “small and messy” Nantucket Island-studio, isobel and cleo designer Charlotte Hess creates artistically innovative knit garments and accessories with worldly appeal. After winning CFW’s 2011 Emerging Designer Competition: East with a wild Native American-inspired show that included a mohair catsuit, a keyhole fringe cardigan, and high-waist wool pants, this textile tech wove her way into the high-end fashion industry with recognition from VENT and Sophisticated Living magazines, the ELLE blog, New York Social Diary, and more. With her organic process and playful humor, Hess fashions stunning boho pieces that are made to last. Her aim? To preserve the personal quality of hand-knit clothes in the face of today’s “disposable culture.” And while her medium may be traditional, her ready-to-wear designs—crafted from angora, lamb’s wool, leather, plastic bags, and “whatever I can turn into a yarn”—are anything but conventional.

very relationship is unique, so when a woman steps out on her wedding day, custom gown designer Faith Thornburg believes her attire should be just as distinctive. “I cater to the modern bride who’s not afraid to try something different,” says the young Savannah-based romantic, who has vowed to bring to the CFW aisle an inimitable Fall 2012 show. Incorporating research into historical fashions and insight into styles that help the wearer feel beautiful, her ethereal creations make a bold bridal statement with rich fabrics and elegant textures, feminine silhouettes and expressive movement. And this season, Thornburg’s collection bares a new off-white aesthetic with its emphasis on neutral tones. “Nudes blend with the skin to add sex appeal to dresses that you would typically expect to see in white,” she explains. Look forward to falling in love with this fresh presentation. Meet Faith: Believe it or not, I get inspiration from the History Channel. o what happens after a model out-struts everyone on the catwalk to win the Rock the Runway Competition? Last year’s winner, South Sudanese beauty Ajang Majok, has moved to New York, secured a contract with international agency BMG Models, and even made the cover of Oscar de la Renta: Fashion & Design at the Mint Museum. Not too shabby for a young émigré who began modeling in 2004 when she arrived in the U.S. And, she says, it wasn’t until her life-changing CFW win that she was ready to chase her dreams: “It made me strong. It made me believe in myself.” Last fall, Ajang walked the runways of New York Fashion Week for designers Joanna Mastroianni and Leanne Marshall. She has also worked for Rafael Cennamo and Gilt Groupe and appears in Charleston’s spring fashion feature in the March 2012 issue (see page 88). As for CFW 2011’s male winner? Ceasar Hingleton too lives in New York, as Ajang’s roommate, in fact. (The two met and started a friendship at CFW CFW style director Ayoka 2011.) Ceasar also feels that winning Lucas (right) and model Rock the Runway gave him the drive coach Michelle Wood (second from left) award Ceasar to take his career seriously. He recently and Ajang as CFW 2011’s top models. modeled menswear for designer Marc Clark’s online campaign. “CFW was a tremendous opportunity,” he says. “To have the judges validate what we saw in ourselves has inspired us.”—Megan McNamara
CFW 2011 Winner
Ajang walked for Oscar de la Renta’s runway show at the Mint Museum in Charlotte and landed the cover of the companion book.

Gentleman Jack Winner: Gentlemen’s Bet by Evan Powell, Fish ith the goal of updating a classic cocktail with modern style, Fish manager Evan Powell concocted his version of a whiskey sour, the Gentlemen’s Bet, by “accessorizing” the flavor components in the Gentleman Jack. “The Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur accentuates the dark fruit notes, the elderflower nectar the floral,” he explains. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon for balance, and you’ve got a sure bet for a winning drink.
W
(Serves 1) 1 ½ oz. Gentleman Jack 1/2 oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur 1/2 oz. elderflower nectar (d’Arbo preferred) 2 wedges lemon Brandy-soaked French cherries (Les Parisiennes preferred) Orange twist Combine liquid ingredients in a shaker over ice. Squeeze in juice from lemons, shake vigorously, and strain into a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with cherries and an orange twist. For a long drink, strain into a highball over ice and add a splash of soda.
More than 30 local bartenders took the CFW and Ben Arnold Beverage Company challenge to create two drinks—one based on Grey Goose vodka, another on Gentleman Jack whiskey—to complement the five nights of fashion in Marion Square. After an online vote by fans and fashionistas at charlestonfashionweek.com, five contenders from each category moved on to the main event, a live competition at Club NV. While thirsty partygoers enjoyed sipping the drinks, our panel of judges sampled each, scoring them according to originality, taste, and presentation. Meet our winning mixologists in the Style Lounge, and try the 2012 Top Cocktails for yourself.
