The Superficial Grade

Jack Marshall, 17 Jan. 2013. Web. 12 Sept. 2013.

The aroma of cinnamon made its way through Margaret and Cuckoo’ s open window. They heard movements downstairs as their parents prepared breakfast. Their house was made out of grey bricks, with light shining through all the windows. Margaret took great pride in taking care of her room. All day, Margaret would hear the sound of her sister, Cuckoo's fingers tapping on the computer keys, playing games. Margaret was a diligent and a wellrounded beaver. She made time for both school and social activities, and was always excited to learn. However, her sister Cuckoo never acted wisely. Cuckoo was a bird that was afraid to push herself, or see how well she could do on her own. She was lazy and deceitful, and her arrogance hindered her learning process. Every day, Margaret and Cuckoo went to school. For homework, Margaret and Cuckoo were given assignments due the next day. Margaret stayed up all night working on her assignment. As for Cuckoo, she managed to coax two squirrels to do her assignment. “I am going to get a better grade than you because, those squirrels are really smart,” Cuckoo said smugly.

“Whatever!” responded, Margaret. Two weeks later, they received their grades. As Cuckoo predicted, she received a better grade on the assignment than Margaret. Margaret was disappointed, but she persevered with her studies. On the other hand, Cuckoo never studied and had the squirrels do her work for her. One day, the squirrels got really upset with Cuckoo and told on her. Cuckoo was asked to go to the principal's office and expelled for cheating. The squirrels were suspended for taking part in Cuckoo’s cheating. At the end of the school Margaret got very good grades, because she had learned the material on her own. It’s more important to be the best you can be than to gain honor by cheating.
