Hello!

It’s safe to say that it’s been a long winter this year in Southern Illinois. Well, it’s time to shake off those snowflakes and start planning for spring weddings! This issue is full of sunny season ideas for celebrating your big day.

The featured stylized photo shoot was coordinated and photographed by two incredible local photographers: Autumn Vinyard of One Fine Day Salon & Photography and Jenn Fortune of J Fortune Photography. With a vision of lush florals and rustic touches, this outdoor wedding inspiration will make you ready to kiss winter goodbye!

It was also exciting to learn of a hidden gem in Southern Illinois known as St. Stephen’s On The Hill in Eldorado. I could go on and on about how breathtaking this venue is...but I’ll let you see for yourself on page 12.

I DO: In Southern Illinois continues to share the love stories from our area and to feature local wedding professionals to make the planning process a lot easier.

10 years ago, Autumn (owner of One Fine Day Salon & Photography in Harrisburg) decided to be a photographer. She worked as a second shooter for her first wedding at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back since.

She lives in Southern Illinois with her sweet husband and their crazy cat named Simba. Creativity fascinates her, drives her, challenges her. Autumn loves love. “Words cannot begin to describe the joy it gives me to capture moments, tell a story, and be a witness to the chemistry two people share. It is my greatest privilege.”

Born and raised in Hawaii, Jenn (owner of J Fortune Photography in Herrin) found herself residing in Southern Illinois. She brings a carefree tropical energy to her profession. Jenn’s goal is to make women feel beautiful and worthy in every image she captures. With a focus on boudoir photography, Jenn empowers women to feel sexy in intimate images that may be intended for a significant other or just to keep for a confidence boost. Photography may be her passion but Jenn’s heart belongs to her border collie and Boston terrier mix, Makale’a.

Jamie (of Stein’s Flowers & Gifts in Carmi) was raised as a farm girl in Southern Illinois. She grew up in the corn fields, tossing hay bales and watching her own gardens grow. Her mother was in love with roses and Jamie has witnessed every variety of rose grown on the farm. Jamie’s love for flowers just came naturally. She remembers running outside to pick wildflowers and throwing them in a mason jar. Jamie likes to arrange floral pieces as they grew naturally with no shape or form. Nature is her inspiration. The outdoors is just one big floral arrangement!

Stephanie (not pictured), owner of Creative Confections in Marion, is a small town girl chasing her dreams of having a successful bakery. She has been creating wedding cake masterpieces for more than three years and doors continue to open. Her work doesn’t stop there as she also bakes pastries and desserts for a local coffee shop. She is happily married and also a devoted mother to her daughter.

The Venue: St. Stephen’s On The Hill Eldorado, Illinois

Autumn Vinyard and Jenn Fortune chose this location because it is the best kept secret in Southern Illinois. It is full of character and leaves a lasting impression.

It is obvious that much thought was put into every detail at St. Stephen’s On The Hill.

The grounds offer a pond that adds to the stunning backdrop. Rows of antique pews lead up to the platform. The reception tent can be open for warm weather or closed and heated for cooler seasons. Chandeliers hang from trees for social gatherings outside of the tent. More plans are in store to expand this venue.

St. Stephen’s On The Hill books weddings during the months of April, May, June, late August, September and October. The venue is private and only invited guests will be at your event.

During each couple’s ceremony, they are presented with a brick that is engraved with their name and wedding date. The couple places the brick in the pathway under the arch where it remains with bricks of couples who have already wed at St. Stephen’s.

St. Stephen’s Chapel is a collection of materials from many different locations: The Bedford stone and brick are from the Van Cleve building that was built in 1910 and was the first permanent structure of the Eldorado Township High School. The building was demolished in 2001 to make way for a new high school.

The cast iron lamp posts are from downtown St. Louis and were manufactured at the Banner Iron Works in St. Louis circa 1870.

The timber framing used in the entrance of the chapel is from the Harry Devillez Lamkin farm just south of Wasson, Il. The slate shingles are from St. Joseph’s Church in Ridgway, Il., which was destroyed in the Leap Day tornado of 2012. The church was built in the late 1800s and was one of the area’s proudest landmarks.

The light in the entrance of the chapel is from St. Ann’s Shrine in St. Louis.

The stained glass window of St. Stephen’s is from St. Ladislaus, a Hungarian Catholic Church in Hazelton, Pa. The church had its last mass on June 4, 2010.

Luke and Leah went to school together, but they never talked to each other. Luke was three grades ahead of Leah. Two years after she graduated high school, he messaged her on Facebook and they started talking.

They went on one date, and then Leah had her appendix removed. He surprised her with flowers, and she thought he was very thoughtful. Then they started seeing each other exclusively. Even though he lived in Henderson, Ky., Luke drove to Eldorado every day to see her. Leah knew he was everything she had been looking for, and they have been together since.

Luke and Leah married in September of 2012. Autumn Vinyard of One Fine Day Salon and Photography captured their wedding. They were excited to be in front of the camera again when asked to model for this stylized photoshoot.

Ombre color schemes are the next big thing! They lead the eye on an irresistible journey with a gradual change from light to dark. Nature shows off the most beautiful ombre displays on a daily basis, the most obvious one being the color displays of sunrise and sunset, the water from shallow to the deep, spring leaves from thick to thin. The amazing thing about cakes, is that with so many layers, they are the perfect opportunity for a baker to incorporate ombre shading, playing off of one of the wedding colors. Whether dresses, flowers, or cakes, the opportunity for subtle ombre is everywhere!

Bryan & Hillary met in April 2012 at Rend Lake.

They were both boating with friends and met at the beach through a mutual couple. They both love boating, and Rend Lake is one of their favorite places. It is one of their favorite places.

They talked via Facebook for awhile and then phone. In May, they finally went on their first date to a Jake Owen concert. At first, dating was rough for them because they lived an hour apart, but somehow Bryan and Hillary made it work. They spent the summer falling in love at the lake, sporting events and concerts. They spent as much time together as possible.

The proposal came on January 19, 2013. Hillary had been off work and sick all week with an upper respiratory infection, and her daughter had the flu.

Hillary finally had an appetite and had asked Bryan to bring her some Panda Express when he drove down that afternoon. By the time he arrived, she no longer had an appetite and asked him to put the food in the fridge. She could tell this bothered

him but didn’t read too much into it. A little later, her daughter asked for something to drink. Hillary opened the fridge, and there on top of the Panda Express container was an open ring box with the most beautiful ring she had ever seen. She turned around to find Bryan behind her on one knee. Hillary immediately said yes, and then they called friends and family to tell them the good news.

They started planning their wedding the very night Bryan proposed. They both knew they had to get married at Rend Lake since it was special to them.

It also a place where Bryan had spent a lot of his life with his late father, Mark Bayer. They also wanted a theme of elegance and glam. The whole wedding planning process went smoothly; everything seemed to fall into place as if it were meant to be. Hillary even bought the very first wedding dress she tried on. She knew the second she walked out and saw her reflection that it was the one.

Many of their friends had gotten married in the year before their own wedding. The couple wanted a ceremony that left a lasting impression. Every detail meant something special to Bryan and Hillary.

The groomsmen all wore a fishing tackle on their

boutonnières in honor of Bryan’s dad’s passion for fishing. They chose a fisherman’s knot instead of a unity candle. These are the words read during the tying of the knot: These two cords represent your past; each of you as individuals and the unique and special gifts you bring to your marriage. As you fasten your pieces together, these actions represent the present; this moment when you join your two lives into one common purpose. The completed knot represents your future, secure in the knowledge your relationship will continue to be strong despite the inevitable changes life brings. Although the fisherman’s knot is one of the simplest to tie, it is also one of the sturdiest. As stress is applied, the knot becomes ever stronger.

In recognition of Bryan’s father during the ceremony, they chose to light a flying luminary over the lake. It was such a special moment and their favorite from the whole day. The guitarist and vocalist sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow as the luminary took flight.

When Bryan was looking at rings, he not only bought one for Hillary, but he had one made for Hillary’s daughter, Addisyn, as well. They surprised her and the guests when they did a special ring vow as a family and he presented Addisyn with her own ring. Bryan and Hillary made sure their wedding represented themselves as a couple from beginning to end.

There was a surprise gift for the newlyweds: a Gangnam Style flash mob! It had been planned for several weeks. The organizers had sent out how-to videos to each participant and even had a dance rehearsal a few days before the wedding. There was a smile on every face during that performance.

Derek and Lindsay met at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. They were neighbors and weren’t attracted to each other immediately.

They had a lot of mutual friends and started seeing each other a lot. Derek had a party at his apartment, and he kept putting his arm around Lindsay. She thought it was because he was trying to make a girl jealous and that it was a little weird. It turned out he liked Lindsay and started

talking to her more. A few weeks later Derek took her on their first date to Buffalo Wild Wings. It’s all history from there.

“A piece of advice I would give to every bride is to just have fun! You have already paid everyone, let them do their jobs and don’t worry about the rest!” - Lindsay.

Emma

Ryan and Emma started dating their freshman year of high school in 2008. They had known each other from school, but became friends when Ryan started attending the same church as Emma - McKinley Avenue Baptist Church, in 2005. They became very close friends, but never liked each other at the same time. Ryan began to like a friend of Emma’s, but things never worked out between them. Ryan and Emma started talking and realized they had both liked each other for a while.

On May 1st, they started dating. They dated all throughout high school and became much more than boyfriend and girlfriend - they had become best friends. When problems arose in both of their lives, they realized that they each ran to and confided in one another. One week before their five year anniversary, Ryan and Emma got engaged. As their journey together seems to be just beginning, the couple is excited to see what the future holds. They both know it will be difficult.

They are getting married this summer, at the age of 21. They will both still be in college as well as working as much as possible to support themselves. Ryan and Emma will rely heavily on the love and provision of God as they move forward in their lives. With all of the potential obstacles they may face, there is no one they would rather be with than each other. To be engaged to your best friend is such a blessing!
