Since opening its doors in 1935, Billy’s Candies has been making its chocolates in-house using only the freshest ingredients available. The history and nostalgia represented by the company have always been welcoming for Tricia Kummerer, the new owner of Billy’s Candies. Kummerer, who has worked for Billy’s for the past 12 years, is looking to preserve the company and keep it around for generations to come. Through making use of much of the same equipment and original recipes from 1935, Billy’s is all about tradition. “We stick to the same values that we’ve had for almost a century. Everything is still made in copper kettles over open flames; it’s still the same hand-written recipes. Everything is just a little bite-sized candy, and we try our hardest not to change anything,” she says. While other businesses have become more commercialized, Billy’s strives to maintain the same small-town feel it has had since its start. A Tradition Going STRONG Teaching Others to Care for One Another Engaging the COMMUNITY
After years of practicing as a family therapist, Berks resident Janice Gasker understood the various complexities involved with raising children. That, along with her daughter’s adorable dog, inspired her to publish her first book: Remy, Fetch Some Zzzzs! This fun story about a dog that doesn’t want to go to bed teaches kids how to take care of dogs by showcasing how Remy’s owner, Kiddo, gets the idea to get Remy to go to bed. Remy, not wanting to go to sleep, plays tricks on Kiddo to stay up longer. However, Remy becomes sad when he believes that his tricks have landed him in trouble with Kiddo. It is then that Kiddo calls Remy to bed and begins reading a story about Remy to Remy, causing him to doze off and finally fall asleep. While this book is intended for children between the ages of 4-8 years, it also provides positive reinforcement for parents. Janice says, “It’s about how kids can take care of dogs, but it’s also about how parents can take care of kids.” For more info visit mascotbooks.com. – KIRSTEN WERNER

Created out of a need in the community, Salt & Light Café is a place where guests can feel encouraged, connected and experience a sense of belonging. A key ingredient to the environment of Salt & Light Café is hospitality, as instead of treating customers as that alone, individuals are welcomed as guests. “When they’re coming into the doors, it’s almost like they’re coming into our house, so we ask, ‘How do we treat people when they’re coming into our house?’ We’re serving them; we’re lifting them up, and we’re saying, ‘Hey! How can we serve you today?’ It’s more than just a transaction; it’s the start of a relationship that we hope to establish with our guests who come in,” says owner Manny Mercado. A SOUND LEGACY
The Reading Musical Foundation’s Enduring Impact on Berks County
BY SARAH MATARELLA PHOTOS COURTESY READING MUSICAL FOUNDATION
Despite widespread threats to music programs, especially in underfunded schools statewide, the Reading Musical Foundation (RMF) has been a cornerstone of Berks County’s distinctive musical landscape. Since its inception in 1926, RMF has devised a sound legacy in advocating for and advancing opportunities for students, educators and the broader community that transcends generations.
Transforming Lives Through Access
RMF began as a re-granting organization, distributing funds to support local music organizations. Over time, the foundation’s mission evolved to hone in on students’ emerging needs.
“When I first joined, we were funding merit scholarships primarily for high school seniors majoring in music,” says RMF President Keri Shultz, who has served the organization in many capacities since she started there right out of college in 2003. “But we realized there were many kids who wanted to play music but lacked financial access to lessons or instruments. That realization reshaped our scholarship programs and our mission.”
This pivot led to a dramatic increase in scholarship awards. From distributing $16,000 across 50 awards in the early 2000s, RMF now annually awards 641 scholarships totaling $292,000, with more than 70 percent of these being need-sensitive.
“We wanted to make sure that those opportunities stayed available to students not just because we’re looking to grow the next batch of professional musicians but because we’re looking to grow the next batch of leaders,” says Shultz. “When we talk about teamwork, discipline and listening and all of these skills that are crucial to succeeding in music, they are also crucial to succeeding in most other industries and life in general.”
A Vision for the Future
As RMF approaches its centennial in 2027, it is embracing new frontiers of access. The organization is looking at partnering with Albright College’s Music Industry Studies program to share knowledge about digital music with local music teachers who are aiming to develop curricula that include the subject. In addition, RMF wants to challenge Berks County’s music therapy desert and expand access to the service in the community. The organization signed on to a
Keeping the Music Playing
In 2012, RMF faced a pivotal challenge: threats to school music programs due to budget constraints. Through tireless advocacy, no Berks County programs were lost — a feat unmatched by neighboring counties. “It was incredible to see that work pay off,” says Shultz, who has dedicated her entire career to bridging gaps in music access. “RMF, with a team of parents and district advocates, kept music alive for 2,500 elementary students in the Reading School District, and the ripple effect continues today as those students graduate and carry the torch.”
Berks County’s music programs remain strong with students consistently excelling at regional and state competitions. RMF’s unwavering belief that music is more than an art form, paired with the dedication of the many local organizations who have kept music and music education in the community, plays a vital role in that strength.
statewide movement for music therapists to be licensed instead of certified.
“It’s still about access and quality; the medium is just changing,” says Shultz. “Everything we do — whether it’s scholarships, advocacy or programming — is about planting seeds of opportunity. The music we help create today resonates for generations.”

Sue Perrotty
CEO OF READING HOSPITAL TOWER HEALTH
BY SARAH MATARELLA | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS
Editor’s note: Effective Feb. 23, Sue Perrotty will return to the Board of Directors and Michael Stern will be promoted to President and CEO.
From financial turnarounds to rescuing boxers, local servant leader Sue Perrotty proves that every challenge is an opportunity to make a difference. Her leadership tenures in banking philanthropy and now healthcare reflect her unwavering belief in the power of serving others and her longstanding love for the Berks County community.
Q: What brought you to Berks County?
I came here to go to Albright College. I moved here in 1971 when I was a mere 17 years old, and I never left. I love everything about Berks County. I like its ease of access — I worked in Philadelphia and New York in banking, and we had a big, broad branch system. So, it was a great jumping-off point for me. I also got a job out of college, which was part of why I stayed.
“I felt a responsibility to ensure we didn’t lose the amazing healthcare that we had built in this community.” “
Q: You transitioned from banking to healthcare leadership. What motivated you to make that switch?
I was scared to death to take this healthcare shot. I was getting feedback from people saying, ‘Are you crazy? You have such a great legacy. This one might not work out right.’ But my answer was, ‘Well, it needs to be done, and I think I know how to do it.’ I felt a responsibility to ensure we didn’t lose the amazing healthcare that we had built in this community. Tower Health had hit a real financial wall, and we weren’t sure if we could climb out of it. It was scary, but it needed to be done.
Q:And this month marks your fouryear anniversary. What has changed since then?
We executed on a multi-tiered turnaround plan with the last piece being the refinancing of our debt stack that was over a billion dollars. In addition, we were running in excess of 20 percent turnover, and it got as high as 25 percent. That’s a quarter of your employees leaving, and in healthcare, training takes a long time. I’m most proud that we returned to pre-pandemic levels while many other healthcare systems haven’t gotten there yet. Over 600 people have returned to Tower Health. To me, that means we’ve made this a great place to work, not just a great place to get quality healthcare. That was what we set out to do.
Q:
When did you know you wanted to be a leader?
United Way was pivotal in my career because the first bank that I worked for didn’t let me be a corporate lender as they did not see women being in that role. I decided I had to leave the area to become a loaned executive at United Way. I met Sam McCullough and he told me he would let me be a lender if I came and joined his company. So, I did. And we built perhaps the best culture I’ve ever worked in. With that impact, I became known as the mother of diversity. We did hard work on issues before the word diversity was even in our vernacular…We pushed on lots of norms, and candidly, I see those norms being pushed on again today.
Q: In addition to being a leader, you’re known for your philanthropy, but what’s something people might not know about you? I rescue dogs. I’m a real softie and will rescue most anything that needs help. I’ve always had a leaning toward serving others, and rescuing animals has fit me well. My rescues have all been boxers. I happen to love the breed, but I also know they can be hard to handle and sometimes don’t fit in with the families they go to. I’ve had as many as five dogs at one time, and right now I have two — Maverick, a boxer, and Bill, a French bulldog.

Sue’s Advice to aspiring women leaders: “To be courageous. Once I realized I wasn’t going to die from taking risks or standing my ground, it gave me the strength to press forward with what I believed was right.” Weekly Wrap. From her first week at Tower Health to today, Sue has sent an email to all employees every Friday to lift up unsung heroes and highlight the work of various departments.
EMBRACING THE COLD Cryotherapy at Baja Beach Wellness
BY NIKKI M. MURRY | PHOTOS COURTESY BAJA BEACH WELLNESS
There are a lot of benefits to stepping into a booth capable of reaching in excess of negative 120 degrees Fahrenheit just ask the staff and the customers trying cryotherapy at Baja Beach Wellness. Whole body cryotherapy is said to quite possibly be the world’s best-kept secret against pain, being the only treatment to initiate the body’s powerful fight-or-flight response. Introduced in the United States in 2010, small-scale studies have shown cryotherapy reduces the circulating levels of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine and cytokines through stimulating thermoreceptors. It is also said to improve the circulation of healthy, nutrient-rich blood to the tendons, muscles, ligaments and
cartilage. All this can lead to tissue regeneration and strengthening. Cryotherapy has also been shown to reduce nerve pain.
Just what can regular treatments in a cryosauna or cryochamber do for the body? Reported benefits include: a reduction in chronic pain and inflammation, decreased joint swelling, less morning stiffness, less pain from movement, a reduced need for pain medication, greater joint stability, better spinal alignment, a quicker resolution of muscle spasms, flushed toxins, mood elevation (similar to a runner’s high), hangover relief, increased metabolism, improved sleep quality and tightened skin.
What to Expect
Want to give cryotherapy a try? First, you’ll want to make sure you’re a candidate. If you have any of the below issues, cryotherapy is a no-go for you.
• Systematic high blood pressure
• Impaired heart function
• Narrowed or clogged blood vessels
• Conditions that may worsen or spread due to cold impact and/or boosted blood circulation
• Pregnancy
• An illness in its acute stage Cryotherapy is also not for young children. Those with cardiac arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease, heart valve disease, Raynaud’s syndrome, neuropathies, hypothyroidism, vasculitis, hyperhidrosis and claustrophobia should check
with their doctors before trying cryotherapy.
If you clear the contraindications and are ready to step into the dry, cold booth, here’s what to know… Bring a thick pair of calf or knee socks and closed-toe shoes with you. You’ll wear these along with provided mittens, a face mask and earmuffs during your time in the chamber. On average, your first session will last anywhere from 45 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on your preference and tolerance.
You may wear whatever clothing you prefer otherwise. Some go in just their undergarments; some wear a sports bra and shorts. Dress to your level of comfort. You will be in a private booth.
Once you enter the chamber (which looks a bit like a spray tan booth), you may feel a bit like your breath has been taken away as your body’s fight-or-flight response kicks in. Try to calm your breathing and slowly shuffle in a circle. A timer will be in view so you can track your session. That’s it! Stay in as long as you’re comfortable, all while adhering to recommendations and guidelines.
The Results
Not surprisingly, results are individual and are more noticeable over time. It is recommended to commit to at least 10 cryotherapy treatments in 30 days to see optimal results. Baja Beach Wellness has you covered with a monthly cryotherapy plan. Reach out for more details at bajabeachwellness.com.

Goo d for the Heart The Love Between People & Their Pets
BY JON FASSNACHT
PHOTOS BY HEIDI REUTER
Many owners consider their pets to be part of the family. The relationship is symbiotic: the animals get to live in a loving home while providing mental and physical health benefits to their owners. And while raising a dog is much different than taking care of a cat, tortoise or gecko, the affection felt by owners is universal.
Hattie
the miracle dog
When Hattie Fitzpatrick left the home of the family that raised her to become a guide dog for a blind woman, her original owners thought they would never lay eyes on her again.
Then a doggone miracle happened.
“Hattie was my sister's project as a teenager,” Emily Fitzpatrick Kenniston recalls about her younger sister Anna Fitzpatrick Layer. “She's one of those people who just does so much good so quietly.”
At the time, the Fitzpatricks lived in New Jersey. A dog lover like the rest of her family, Anna learned about the puppy-raiser program offered by The Seeing Eye, Inc., the world’s oldest guide dog school headquartered in the Garden State.
The organization loans out puppies to families who raise and socialize them, acclimating the animals to crowds and noises, an essential step for their eventual role as guide dogs.
“We got our beautiful puppy in the summer of 2004,” Kenniston says. “Hattie was a golden retriever/golden labrador mix. In 2005, we moved to Berks County. Hattie, of course, came with us. In November of 2005, we got the call from The Seeing Eye that it was time to return Hattie, and that was just a brutal day.”
If a puppy doesn’t pass the organization’s rigorous seeing-eye training, it can return to its raisers. Kenniston admits the family said a few prayers hoping for that scenario. But Hattie sailed through the test and was matched with a blind woman.
Grieving the upcoming loss of her pet, Anna knitted a blanket to be sent with Hattie.
“Maggie, the woman who got Hattie from The Seeing Eye, found out who my sister was through the information on the blanket, and it started a friendship for the seven years that Hattie was Maggie's guide dog,” she says. “But the miraculous part of the story happened in 2013, which was a horrendous year for my family. That summer, Maggie called and said: ‘Hattie’s ready to retire. Would you like her to come home?’ And she gave her back to us. So, Hattie came home and was very much responsible for getting us through a tough time as a family.”
Hattie also knew when to say goodbye. Anna was set to become a military wife in the spring of 2016, which meant immediately traveling around the world. The prospect of leaving Hattie behind became a major
stressor. Two months before the wedding, Hattie crossed the rainbow bridge.
“She was a real hero,” Kenniston says.
She was a real hero,”
“It's not talked about enough that service dogs undergo a tremendous amount of stress. They are the eyes, the ears, they handle the emotions of the people who they love. And that does take a lot out of them.”
Anna, who also raised Flossie and Ivory for the organization, continues her selfless
service. For the next three to five years, she will be stationed with her husband, son and daughter in Belgium.
For those seeking a way to give back, Kenniston recommends fostering seeing-eye dogs — if you feel your heart can take it.
“You fall in love with the dogs, but you are foster care at the end of the day,” she says. “But when you foster a therapy dog of any kind, you are doing God's work because of what they do for people — think of veterans with PTSD, kids on the autism spectrum. It cannot be overstated the kind of joy that you can bring to someone else.”
Making Therapy less awkward
Dogs have always been there for Renee Stout, even when no one else was.
“I was a kid of divorce, so my dog was like the sibling I didn't have,” the licensed clinical social worker says. “I felt lonely as a kid, and my dog really helped that.”
With outpatient mental health practice Clear Water Wellness, Stout has been “making therapy less awkward since 2017.” And dogs play a significant role in that.
“I feel like what makes therapy awkward is the stigma that's around it, that you're going to sit across from someone who's got their nose up in the air, filled with clinical judgment,” she says. “I wanted to take all that out. I wanted to keep everything super clinical without the ‘ick.’ You come into our office, and it feels like your home.”
Stout founded the animal-assisted therapy program at Bethany Children's Home in Heidelberg Township with her late chocolate lab, Latte. She then moved on to Berkshire Psychiatric, a mental health clinic in Reading, where she continued offering animal-assisted therapy to teenagers, LGBT groups and others before starting her own practice.
At Clear Water Wellness in Wyomissing, her Newfypoo (a Newfoundland/poodle mix) named Bowie has taken on the duties once handled by Latte. Bowie’s major role is increasing clients’ comfort, especially younger ones, and helping to build a rapport.
“If you can draw on any common theme between them, that's a win,” Stout says. “And it's so awesome to be able to use the behavior of a dog when you're working with a 6 year old. When she barks, I can ask, ‘What do you think she's trying to communicate with me? Are all of her needs met?’ And that allows the kid to tune into their own stuff.”
Clear Water also contracts with Conrad Weiser School District, where she often notices children bonding and making connections while petting Bowie.
The improved behavior and demeanor of children and teenagers around pets, especially dogs, has been a passion of Stout’s for most of her adult years. She even wrote a thesis about the effects of animal-assisted therapy in a group setting.
“The group with an animal present had a much easier time opening up and participating,” she recalls. “Because honestly, what's going
to make a group of closed-off teenagers laugh more than a giant, fluffy dog farting in the middle of the group? And they see how I treat her, and that is super helpful in mirroring behaviors with kids.”
Pups have to be at least one year old and pass the Canine Good Citizen Test to become a certified animal-assisted therapy dog.
A less strenuous and less regulated way for a dog — or any domesticated animal — to make a difference is by becoming an emotional support animal, or ESA. Those animals make a difference just with their presence, helping to relieve symptoms associated with a mental health or psychiatric disability. Clear Water also helps clients to get their animals registered as an ESA.
Stout believes most pets are emotional support animals by default, even if they’re not officially classified as such.
“If you ask people to think about who was there for them in their darkest times, it’s often a pet,” she says. “Because they don't judge us that same way. It’s like a human relationship without all the nonsense.”
Gracie It’s all about
Melissa Blatt frequently brings her golden retriever Gracie with her to GreenwichLenhartsville Elementary School. They’re both employed there, Melissa as a fifth grade teacher and Gracie as a therapy animal.
But there’s no question who’s top dog.
“Oh my gosh, everybody loves Gracie,” she admits. “I have become invisible at my elementary school. They used to say hello to me. Now they act like I'm not even there, and it's all about Gracie. They're calling out her name on days when she's not there. When the kids come down the hall in the morning and they see she's there, their faces just light up. And it's that same way everywhere we go.”
Blatt became interested in therapy dogs through her volunteer work with the United Way of Berks County and Victory Junction Camp, a camp for kids with serious illnesses and different medical conditions in North Carolina. She wanted a therapy dog to take to the hospital.
Nearly four years ago, the Blatts got Gracie as a puppy. It became obvious early on that she had the
right temperament for the job. Last year, she became a certified therapy dog.
Along with Blatt’s elementary school, Gracie’s list of clients includes hospitals, libraries and assisted living facilities.
“We visit with staff members; we visit with patients, whoever needs just a little brightening in their day,” Blatt says.
“Honestly, she doesn't do anything special. She doesn't have a whole bag of tricks or anything. She just loves to be petted. And she brings happiness and smiles everywhere she goes.”
One of those places is Maidencreek Place, a senior living community in Maidencreek Township.
"Our community feels like home, and Gracie adds that extra comfort of home when she visits," says Theresa Labour, Maidencreek Place’s community relations director. "Her soft fur, wet nose and wagging tail spread
smiles throughout the community, and the residents love her so much."
Her workdays vary. When Gracie goes to Greenwich-Lenhartsville Elementary School, she's there from 7:30 in the morning until Blatt’s husband picks her up at 2:30 in the afternoon, though she does get breaks throughout the day. At her other locations, her shifts last about an hour.
Gracie knows it’s time to get to work when she wears her collar; she only wears it when she’s on the clock.
“She absolutely turns on the ‘come pet me’ when she has that collar on,” Blatt says.
And that’s the biggest difference between therapy dogs and service dogs.
“When service animals are working, you're not supposed to interact with them because they're doing a job,” she says. “Whereas therapy dogs, yes, you should.”
When she's not working, Gracie loves to play with her two other doggy sisters, Gertie, a yellow lab, and Maya, a black lab mix. And she likes to lie in the window seat and watch birds, squirrels and rabbits.
includes parents Jermaine Sr. and Kristin and younger brothers Jayden and Jameson.
Jermaine then became intrigued about geckos, so he returned to the pet store and brought home two, one of which is named Phantom.
When he’s not feeding his animals vegetables, fruits and the occasional bug, Jermaine enjoys observing their silliness.
“The tortoises wake up, and they stretch their little heads out, and they’re just
The Attraction
‘Maine Maine’
PHOTOS BY LAUREN ADELE LITTLE PHOTOGRAPHY
When Jermaine Edwards II turned 13 in May, he asked his parents if he could get a tortoise. Having watched YouTube videos about the reptiles, the eighthgrade honors student at Lancaster Country Day School thought it
would be a good first animal to call his own.
When the family got to the pet store, two tortoises were available. Jermaine remembered seeing that some tortoises get lonely when they’re alone.
“So, I got two just in case,” he says. And that’s how Prince (named after the Fresh Prince) and Sleepy Junior (named after his uncle, whose nickname is Sleepy) became part of the Muhlenberg Township family, which also
like, ‘Oh, I don't wanna be awake right now.’ I think they’re always angry to be awake,” he says. “And then the geckos are fun to watch because they jump everywhere. They're always jumping.”
If he’s allowed to, he hopes to take the animals with him to college.
“Jermaine and I did not have pets growing up, so this is a new experience for our entire family,” Kristin says. “I am proud of ‘Maine Maine’ because he is extremely responsible with his pets. He always wants to make sure he is doing everything he can to take good care of them.”

A Labor of Love The Mount Penn Casita
It’s a building that caught the eye and imagination of young Becky Schuhwerk of Pennside. She’d pass it every day on the way to the former Central Catholic High School or when she was out walking or bicycling through the neighborhood with friends.
BY DONNA REED
PHOTOS BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS
The little century-old building was never far from her thoughts and heart even as the years passed and her travels past it decreased their frequency as her children became adults.
Years later all grown up, Becky Shemanski (she married her CCHS sweetheart, Gregg) would again pass by it nearly daily from the couple’s first apartment on Mineral Spring Road in Reading and then later as she motored her children to their classes and activities at Central from the family’s Birdsboro home.
In time, Becky ventured into a real estate career, and that morphed into the investor side of things. Among her properties was, at one time, a rental in Ocean City, MD. Eventually, Becky decided to keep the investments closer to home for easier management. She became more selective and pragmatic.
But, as with any practical person, there can be a flight of fancy.
Buying intoThe Dream
And, Becky really fancied that unique little property on the corner of Perkiomen and Endlich avenues in the Borough of Mount Penn.
Chances are good, whether you are a resident of that area or travel by it, you’ve noticed the building as well.
Becky, acquiring it in August 2023, calls it her “casita.” A casita is defined as a small house, often on the grounds of a larger house. The word literally translates to "small house" in Spanish. There’s no larger house here, but the corner property is sizable.
Passersby, since its construction in 1922, have known the building as a gas station, retail establishment and a dry cleaning drop-off site.
Finally, it was John Gross who successfully operated a small family real estate brokerage from the property for many years before Becky acquired the site from him following his retirement.
Most, at one time or another, have remarked or reflected on its unique Spanish-revival construction, boasting large custom windows, stucco walks and a tiled roof.
Despite its size, it thrived with commercial tenants over the years.
But Becky was determined to transform the first floor into a studio apartment. The building does have a long-standing, smaller studio apartment on the ground floor with an entrance fronting an alley off Endlich.
Making the Old New but Keeping It Old…
The transformation not only involved a total renovation of the first floor and upgrading all the utilities feeding the casita; it also meant obtaining a zoning variance from the borough permitting its full use as residential.
Becky quickly got down to business. While Attorney Gene Orlando worked on the variance, the Berks Commercial Renovations team tackled the physical renovation interior and exterior.
The 350-square-foot first floor, which had been divided into a couple of tiny offices, was cleared down to the studs to create an open-concept area. Even the ceiling was pulled down, and a new one with recessed lighting was constructed.
Becky and her daughter, Stephanie, 39, who lives in Arlington, VA, and has done design work in Washington, DC, Virginia, Ocean City, MD, and in Berks, collaborated on the interior layout as well as paint colors, fixtures and lighting. (Among Stephanie’s local work is
the interior of the new office of Lucine Sihelnik, president and CEO of the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance in the organization’s Court Street headquarters.)
Every effort was made to retain the architectural integrity of the casita, says Becky. That meant keeping and restoring the large, beautiful arched, multi-paned windows on all four sides that flood the space with light.
The floors were replaced with a hardwood-styled laminate that affords easy maintenance.
Half of the open-concept space is a lovely kitchen, complete with granite countertops and a fire engine red Galanz refrigerator, considerable cabinet space and a full-sized state-of-the-art range and microwave.
The granite complements the gray cabinetry. There is space at the window for a small table and chairs with a view to the lively Mount Penn streetscape.
A Modern Vintage-inspired Bath
Off the living/sleeping side of the studio apartment is a new bathroom. Penny-style black-and-white tile reflects the era of the casita while a spacious walk-in shower and matte black faucets and hardware, including the lighting fixture over the large curved mirror above the narrow, modern sink, offer 21st-century accents. The soft white of the walls offset by the dark gray beneath the chair rail perfectly meld with the tile and shower and window frames.
There is also a modest but much-needed closet for storage adjacent to the bathroom.
The open first floor is painted a light, soft white, enhancing the airiness of the space. Recessed lighting (also installed in the downstairs studio) throughout unifies the space, offsetting the need for separate floor and table lamps in the tight quarters.
Becky is enthusiastic about the work done by the team.
“Dean Moise provided his extensive construction expertise and insight towards the design of the historical structure,” she says. “Courtney Brumbach excelled at sourcing the materials for the job, coordinating schedules, meeting subs even on the weekends and offering suggestions for the design.”
“Andy, the foreman, helped develop solutions to situations encountered with a 100-year-old building, persevering through one of the hottest summers on record, and did excellent construction work across a wide variety of trades. Chris was a very talented painter. Our collaboration with the team produced the outstanding result.”
The exterior also received an extensive makeover, but every effort was made to retain the original look.
An old air conditioner was pulled to reinstate the small window above the front door.
Tackling the Cherished Exterior
The entire exterior, including the tile roof, was power washed. Fortunately, the green tile roof was entirely salvageable.
Round ball lights were installed at the corners, and some downlights were added for the soffits.
While the copper gutters couldn’t be salvaged, modern ones were added with color that matches the roof tile.
The brick accents around the windows and running along the bottom of the building stayed as did the corbels, two on each of the casita’s four sides under the roofline. The entire exterior received a new coat of white paint, with the scroll leafed corbels painted canyon clay. The front and side doors are a subtle hibiscus hue.
“We wanted to continue in that Spanish vein,” says Becky.
The old parking pad was ripped up and a new lot with marked spaces created. Son Michael, 34, of Exeter Township, an IT professional, pitched in and helped with the demolition.
Landscaping was also redone, and a mason repaired the rear stone wall.
“Some neighbors to the rear said this is the best the property has looked in 30 years,” Becky says proudly. “I have the mindset it should look good for another 100 years!”
Spanish Revival
Architecture Explained Happy Tenants
Since Becky owns a combination commercial/ residential building nearby on Perkiomen Avenue, the extra off-street parking is welcomed by those tenants as well as the casita’s first occupant, Tessa Harbaugh.
Doing the final staging of the finished studio that helped pique Tessa’s interest was Melinda O’Neill from Empire Home Center along with Stephanie.
Tessa, a graduate of the Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI, found the listing for the apartment on Zillow. While she received a culinary degree and worked for a time in the restaurant industry, she is now a fraud analyst for a large mobile phone corporation. The kitchen was the attraction to the property,
she says. It’s the perfect place for making her specialty risotto.
There’s also space for a computer desk where she can work remotely.
For the Exeter High School graduate, with her parents nearby, one missing amenity is not a problem.
“It’s the closest I’ve lived to my parents in years,” Tessa says with a smile, “and I told them: ‘I’m gonna use your washer.’”
Off the side door is a small outdoor space. It overlooks both the Perkiomen Avenue side as well as the lane off leafy Endlich Avenue. It provides enough space for a couple of chairs, a table and some plants.
The casita is just one of a number of Spanish Revival structures locally, the bulk of which are in Mount Penn and Lower Alsace Township.
According to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission: “The Spanish Colonial Revival style, also known as the Spanish Eclectic style, is a remnant of the traditional Spanish architectural themes seen in Spain's early American colonial settlements. The traditional elements like clay tile roofs, round arch openings and carved wooden doors follow the form of the early Spanish missions and are very distinctive. Other ornate decorative features draw from later periods of Spanish architecture and show the influence of Moorish, Byzantine, Gothic or Renaissance design. This revival style became popular in the early 20th century after the Panama-California Exposition was held in San Diego in 1915. Exotic-themed architectural revivals (Egyptian, Moorish, Dutch Colonial, Swiss Chalet) were popular throughout the country in the period from 1920 to 1940. Many good examples of the Spanish Colonial Revival style remain in Pennsylvania.”
The casita contains many of what PHMC calls the identifiable features, including the low-pitched clay tile roof, round arches at entryways, porches and windows, stucco exterior walls and the multi-paned windows.
Perhaps the most recognizable of the Spanish Revival structures are the dozen homes in the development known as Earle Gables, just a couple of blocks east of the casita.
Constructed in 1928 just before the stock market crash that heralded the Depression, the developer namesake was Earl G. Garman. Architect for the development was Earl Hickman hence the name Earle, embellished with an extra ‘e.’
A commemorative 1963 Reading Eagle article describes the houses marked by “balconies with wrought iron railings, tile roofs, spiral columns, tile floors and fireplaces, arches and other Spanish architectural influences.”
A few sprawling late 1920s apartment complexes along Carsonia Avenue with a few similar houses nearby also boast the Spanish Revival architecture, as do two memorable small abodes in Wyomissing Borough off the main boulevard as well as a few semidetached homes in the South Temple section of Muhlenberg Township.
A Statement of Love and Pride
Becky says the renovation and architectural preservation of the casita was a labor of love for the neighborhood in which she was raised. Indeed, her childhood home on Brighton Avenue stayed in the family until her parents downsized and sold it a decade ago.
She sees the project as a way to improve the neighborhood and provide affordable housing. Will she take on another restoration?
“I’d do another,” she says, “but I’d probably do it with an intent to sell rather than rent.”
Her advice to others: “Use your creativity; keep your vision, but understand a project will usually take longer and cost more money than you’d originally thought.”
Still, she is very enthusiastic.
“I love Pennside, and I’m hoping the investment we put into the casita will spur others to do similar projects.”
Vintner’s Table in Wyomissing CLASSY, PERFECT PAIRINGS
BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS PHOTOS BY HEIDI REUTER
What pure joy to revel in the experience of Vintner’s Table, nestled alongside tony stores and foodie digs on “The Block” in Wyomissing on Hill Road! This restaurant encompasses and embodies the Folino family’s classy touch and uniquely magical Italian cuisine. Dining here feels like a welcoming embrace from the legacy that the Folino Estate Winery has been steadily and carefully building in Berks County. While many Berks Countians have long enjoyed the delicious array — and incredibly deep variety — of wines from the winery, it’s time for everyone to enjoy a fully fabulous menu with dishes that show perfect pairings for every item, from appetizers (Piccolini, or “smalls”) to salads, soups, pasta, Pinsa Romana (pizza) and even desserts.
In addition to wine selections, there’s a full cocktail list plus mocktail offerings as well. The Vineyard Old-fashioned drink stuns with complex flavor, created with bourbon, Sangiovese, demerara, bitters of angostura and orange, plus an orange swath and luscious Luxardo cherry. The Estate Fig & Thyme Gin Fizz is the epitome of refreshment, made with gin, lemon, Moscato di Folino, aquafaba (chickpea brine — perfect in sours and fizzes) and hints of savory thyme.
For the best overall experience here, mentally toss aside what you know about all the Italian favorites you’ve come to love, such as arancini, chopped salad, pappardelle and pizza. Clear your mind: make it campo libero — a free and open field. Talk with your server to make decisions about what to order, from drinks on out. In the style of true Italian hospitality, consider that dining with friends and family is indeed a sacred pastime.
Some Delicious Deets: Arancini, Boards (Charcuterie), Salad & Soup
For a truly aromatic starter to share with others at the table, try the Arancini — so tasty that they should just be renamed Guilty Pleasures. These fried risotto balls are stuffed with teeny slivers of ham, gooey mozzarella and Parmesan, then topped with a ladling of incomparably yummy homemade tomato sauce. Each bite delivers textural thrill, from an easy, batter-tasty, crispy crunch, which shifts immediately into a soft, warm, cheesy center. Pairing suggestion: Valentino (a “bright profile” named after co-founder Marco Folino’s father).
The Red Wine Polpette (meatballs) are wine-braised and served with VT’s tomato sauce, hand-grated Parmesan and crostini. They’re exquisitely old country in flavor and texture — so hearty, with that killer sauce oozing with flavor intensity. Lorenzo Forte wine, an award-winning Bordeaux blend, is the pairing here.
The Chopped Italian Salad can be served as a side or main meal, infinitely robust with so many ingredients. It’s like a puzzle full of surprising freshness, with multiple players in justright bite-sized pieces. There are numerous veggies, herbs, garlic, onion, shaved cheese, cured meats and a super light oily dressing coating the whole gang. Greens, thin rounds of hot peppers for heat, basil (and other herbs!), garden-fresh cherry tomato halves, cubes of aged cheese, purple cabbage, sliced soppressata and even slender punctuation points by black olives combine in a beautiful mélange of wholesomeness. Fantastic. Definitely check out the Boards menu for superior charcuterie: a Build-Your-Own Antipasti Board has diners select three Italian meats and three cheeses, plus almonds, marinated olives, crackers, honeycomb, jam and grapes. That’s a fast way to fly by stomach to Italy, along with the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.
As expected, Vintner’s Table makes entrees from scratch, honoring family-approved and time-tested methods of preparation — including their pasta, as they employ an Italian bronze die cut machine (they explain: “bronzecut pasta absorbs sauce better, improving mouth feel and flavor”). There’s just no way packaged pasta can ever approach the texture and taste of these noodles. Although the pasta menu changes by season, a standard is Pappardelle Parmesan Crema, which pairs with Rosato Secco (a light wine for a heavier pasta). These thick, flat noodles are the large heroes of the pasta world, substantial and well-slathered with a rich, white wine garlic cream sauce. Add chicken, shrimp or Italian sausage as preferred; the sausage comes sprinkled aloft in marvelous little balls scattered across the cream.
For a truly special pizza treat, order one of the Pinsa Romana
offerings, such as the ever popular Margherita with fresh mozzarella, aromatic basil and tomato sauce. (Pairing is Sangiovese.) What makes this style of pizza so special is the dough, fermented 48 hours and made daily. When spread out for baking, the shape naturally differs from standard American pizza, and Vintner’s Table serves the final prize on a wooden board. Because the crust is quite flat, thin and unusually light, it’s also airily crunchy as well as subtly yet compellingly flavorful so that the entire eating experience — bread plus toppings — feels completely unified, utterly satisfying. Lingering long enough for dessert? The Tiramisu is mwah! Kissably soft as a cloud, possibly the finest version of this pastry ever created.
In short: so fine, so well-focused, Vintner’s Table puts both the wine and fine in “fine dining.”
