LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Staff Speaks
Happy 2022! As usual, we’re kicking off the year at Berks County Living with love in the form of our annual Weddings Issue. Whether you’re looking for love, are in love, are engaged or even married, we think it’s always a great time to toast to love. Personally, this year’s issue is a bit closer to my heart as I recently became engaged this past October. I have to admit, it has given me a whole new perspective on, and appreciation for, wedding planning and marriage, too. There are so many things to consider, which was part of the inspiration for our The Look: Battle of the Wedding Trends spread on pages 18 and 19. Wedding fads come and go, so it’s fun to see just what everyone loves. My favorite part of every Weddings issue we put together is sharing the newlywed stories from Berks couples who are so generous in submitting them to us for consideration. We have some really great ones this year. Just flip to page 22 to get started reading them. Also in this issue, we welcome a new quarterly column celebrating local arts and artists by writer Marian Frances Wolbers, Art Originals. You can find the first installment on page 11. And our Living In Style story on page 32 serves up some decorating inspiration for the bedroom and – even better – tips for experiencing more restful sleep. That’s something we’d all enjoy, I’m sure.
Cheers to the New Year!

AROUND TOWN BERKS BITS
Get Organized and Start the New Year Right Clutter can really bog us down. Looking to start fresh for 2022? Here are a few tips.
1Clear . Digital Space.
Clutter doesn’t just come in the form of physical matter. How many unneeded photos are on your smartphone? How many junk emails are in your trash or spam folder? Get rid of these items, too.
Welcome Winter with a Celebration
Head to West Reading Jan. 28 through 30 for the 5th Annual West Reading Ice ‘N Spice Festival if you’re a fan of the coldest of seasons. Featured will be highly talented ice sculptors, including nationally-known Danny Kissel of Kissel Studios, Newville, Cumberland County, chiseling their way through hundreds of pounds of ice to craft beautiful creations. Specials with spice will be highlighted at businesses in blocks 400-700 along Penn Avenue. Don’t miss out on the limited edition spicy drinks, eats with a kick and discounts on merchandise, too. Hours are Friday: 5-9pm, Saturday: 11am-8pm and Sunday: 11am-5pm. Want to get involved? Contact West Reading Tavern, festival host, at 610.376.9232. For more info visit westreadingicenspice.com. – NIKKI M. MURRY
Branding Pretzel City
West Reading Main Street Manager Mark Ratcliffe is on a mission. He wants the Greater Reading area to brand itself as “Pretzel City.” Explains Ratcliffe, “I know how important it is for an area to have an identity. That identity can encourage or discourage people to live in your area. Tourism is also an incredibly important component to a thriving city and community like ours.” He’s putting his mission into motion. “I have talked to numerous community leaders, and all think it’s a good idea,” he says. “It would be great if the City of Reading really embraced it and did a major push, but I also think a grassroots endeavor could help get the ball rolling. As Reading looks for a new identity, I think we should lean on our history, and pretzels are true to who we are, not rich or poor, not male or female, and a product that is loved internationally.” Want to help the effort, learn more and sport Pretzel City gear? Visit pretzelcitypa.com. – NIKKI M. MURRY
2Make . a Checklist.
Overwhelmed by the idea of clearing out items in your home that need to go or by setting up an organizing system? Make a to-do list first. Setting up a plan can make starting – and finishing – a task much more manageable.
3.
Take Photos.
Need a motivator to keep cleanup spaces clear? Take a photo of your work once you’ve completed it. If you’re unsure if it’s becoming cluttered again, refer back to the images of your finished project for comparison.
Kick off the New Year with Creativity
Visit The Art Room in West Reading if you’re looking for a fun and creative way to stay busy on a cold winter day. Opened about a year ago by Brian Adams, many call the business his “love story for West Reading.” He explains, “I felt as if something was missing from the Avenue. And it was an activity!” Since getting rolling, The Art Room now offers ceramic painting, pottery painting, glass painting, wood painting, canvas painting and clay play. Bonus: it’s BYOB! The Art Room is also a collaborative center. Says Adams, “We love to collaborate with our neighbor stores. We have done a makeup tutorial with Tina’s Salon and Day Spa, and recently we started an exciting collab with Chatty Monks Brewing. You can purchase a glass with both of our logos on it, paint it and bring it to Chatty Monks and get it filled with complimentary French fries.” Want to check it all out? AROUND TOWN
AT LEFT: JIM REECE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, FRIEND, INC. COMMUNITY SERVICES
What is Friend, Inc.
Community Services? BY KELLY TANGER | PHOTO COURTESY FRIEND, INC. COMMUNITY SERVICES
F
riend, Inc. Community Services is a social service agency catering to the Northeast Berks County area and was founded in September, 1972. With offices originally located on Main Street in Kutztown, the nonprofit’s services initially centered on drug and alcohol counseling. When funding priorities changed and became more focused on the Reading area, Friend unfortunately closed for a period of time, until a group of churches got together and were able to happily bring Friend, Inc. back to life. Over the last several years, Friend, Inc. has recognized that people in the community had a considerable, yet often quiet, desire to know where to turn for help and how to access it, be it for financial struggles, due to food scarcity, or a number of other needs that can oftentimes strike unexpectedly. Executive Director Jim Reece says, “One of the challenges we have in this part of the county is that it’s very rural. There is poverty. There is domestic violence. There is homelessness, but it’s harder to see in a rural community.” Friend Inc. has been able to meet the needs of community members in the northeast part of Berks with compassion and has grown exponentially over the years.
Serving Others
Today, Friend, Inc. operates a large self-select food pantry five days a month at its main office, serving close to 500 individuals in the community, as well as a weekly on-campus student pantry at
Kutztown University, serving roughly 150 students a month. Friend also operates a mobile food pantry in Huff’s Church the first Thursday of the month, utilizing their new refrigerated box truck. This allows the organization to serve those who might not have the physical ability to come in to the market. The nonprofit even offers a pet pantry for furry friends’ needs, too. Reece adds, “If we can bring the needed identified services to the community up here, that’s what we do.” To receive assistance from Friend, Inc. individuals complete an intake process with a case manager in order to determine their needs. From there, they are connected to the appropriate services that can assist with rent, utilities, employment, housing and more. The friendly staff helps people navigate through each step for a smooth process. Friend, Inc. does provide short-term direct assistance. However, some of the outside assistance programs have a longer turnaround time. Friend, Inc. also has the capability to provide help during a waiting period. The bottom line remains that the struggles people face can often be hard to see. Reece says, “People who are hurting need help, and our goal is self-sustainment. We try to help either directly or through other support services so that people can get their lives back with a sense of self-respect.” He continues, “We’re here; we care.”
Fundraising for Friend
There are two large annual fundraising events to participate in or donate to, both in the name of supporting this amazing agency. The Brake the Cycle of Poverty charity ride and a benefit auction both occur each year, not only raising funds, but also raising awareness of some of the issues in our community, including homelessness, poverty and domestic violence. This year, the benefit auction will be held on April 30th and will be both live and virtual. On hand will be an auctioneer, eats, drinks and fun. More info and tickets can be found on friendinc.org. DID YOU KNOW?
Heavy lifting. Friend Inc. distributes between 8,000 and 10,000 pounds of food each month. In 2021 alone, the nonprofit provided direct support to nearly 1,200 people. Collaborative Agencies. Friend, Inc.
is also the northeast home for Safe Berks, Family Guidance Center, and Women and Family Services (WIC) making these services more accessible to the community.

AROUND TOWN IN THE LIMELIGHT
What’s the most rewarding part of your job? Navigating the health care landscape can be very complicated, and in my role, I can simplify the process with clear messaging. It’s nice knowing that something I’ve helped create has helped someone take positive action with their health. Tell me about your volunteer work with Berks Encore. I’m a board member for this local organization that provides services for our senior citizens. In 2019, just before the pandemic, we launched a Care+ program to provide personalized care planning services for families taking care of their loved ones at home. This program eases the stress caregivers often have by providing a health assessment and connecting them to local resources that can help their loved one age in place safely.
IN THE LIMELIGHT WITH
Julia Nickey
Regional Director, Marketing and Communications, Penn State Health BY CHRISTINA J. STEFFY | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS
Julia Nickey loves her community. A Berks County native, she enjoys everything about the area, from the hidden gems in the City of Reading to the rural countryside. She also enjoys giving back to the community through her roles at Penn State Health and Berks Encore. How did you end up in health care marketing? I always knew I wanted to go into marketing. When I was looking at degree programs, I came across a food marketing program at St. Joseph’s University outside of Philadelphia. I thought it sounded interesting, so that’s the program I chose. But after graduating, I never worked in food marketing. I ended up working at Alvernia University (then Alvernia College) and helped with the development of their master’s in business administration program with a health care focus, and I realized health care was the field I wanted to be in. I then worked for a local medical device company and eventually joined the Penn State Health St. Joseph campus as their Director of Patient and Organizational Engagement. Now, I’m a regional director of marketing and communications for the health system.

In 2018, you were named a Greater Reading Young Professional Rising Star, and in 2019, you were a Lehigh Valley Business 40 under 40 honoree. As a successful young professional, what advice do you have for other young professionals hoping to achieve their career goals? This sounds simple, but you should figure out what comes naturally to you and what you love doing, and then find a way to make money doing that. Doing something you love is important, otherwise no matter what, you will always feel like it’s just work and it’s not fulfilling. You’re a busy professional who’s active in the community, but when you do have some free time? How do you relax? When I’m not doing home repairs with my husband, school activities with my daughters, or playing in the West Reading Pickleball league, I enjoy running in the park, listening to true crime podcasts and Friday happy hours. LEARN MORE.
Improved Access.
St. Joseph Medical Center has been a part of the community since 1873. In 2015, it joined Penn State Health, expanding Berks residents’ access to high quality care.
A Growing Network.
Penn State Health has urgent care centers and hospitals across eight counties including Berks. In 2022, a new hospital campus is opening in Lancaster.

Lisa Muller Queen of Whimsy BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS
O
f all the wonderful creatives who live and work in Berks County, Lisa Muller could well be crowned the queen of whimsy. Her wild imagination — a subtle one, mind you, not unbridled — is always given full love on the canvas, leaving the viewer with a sense of supreme wonder and mystery, as though her brush has literally painted the canvas of your own spiritual center, or the innermost chambers of your heart. Her full-blown show at Reading’s GoggleWorks last year was alive with sheer presence and inner vision. Muller’s animals with tall ears, female faces with sly, expressive eyes looking sideways out to the world, a horse with a bluish mane holding a small flower (“Forget Me Not”) — all of these distinctive paintings and prints are highly collectible. The very act of investing in Muller’s images to adorn your space — at home or office or boardroom — suggests an intention to be uplifted and reminded of the power of emotion, humor and dreams. That Whimsical Style Says Muller, “I tend to work from the inside out. I choose this approach over representation, partly because I find reality to be an unreliable narrator. The power of emotion can override perception, dictating much of what is thought to be ‘real.’ The individual mind is largely unknowable, each having its own impractical judgements. This idea fascinates me and shows up in the paintings as whimsy.” The mixed-media artist describes her process: “I usually begin with paper collage on a wood substrate. The paper might have an image of a previous painting, a grocery list or a scribbled note. All kinds of things go into this first layer.” This attention to detail, and especially to valuing everyday objects as inspiration, comes naturally to her. She continues, “Then there are several layers of acrylic color. I usually finish with oil paint because of its long working time. In between I may use pencils, crayons, markers...anything that achieves the effect I want. The viewer mostly sees the final layer of oil when looking at the finished work.” And those colors! Those shades! The brilliant contrasts draw you in, hold your gaze. Just one more look. The act of enjoying Muller’s work is multi-level, as though you’re investigating more
AROUND TOWN
than seeing. The effect varies from painting to painting. Just when you think you’ve figured out what the figure, the image, the face or the cloud is saying to you, you’re wise to simply step back a few yards or more and then look again from a distance. Now breathe. You’ll land with the distinct sensation that whatever you need to do as you move on to the next moment of your life is going to be fine, just fine — and richer for the journey. Into the Woods About those faces and animal motifs, Muller explains, “I like to morph different species of animal together as part of the illogical worlds I create. Certain creatures have become symbols, though few convey the same symbolic meaning to every audience, so I often go with the most common. Sometimes an animal persona is represented as a costume, something that can be removed. I often see myself acting out traits that are associated with non-human animals, so these combinations feel natural to me.” LEARN MORE. A strong collaborator with other artists, Muller creates evocative “mini” pieces for sale during the popular “25 Days of Minis” series. From her blog at lisamullerart.com: Watching the dogs prod the ground, sniffing patches of rotting leaves like they’re plowing through a bestseller, I see a familiar part of my studio experience.”

AROUND TOWN THOUGHTS FROM THE CHAMBER ALLIANCE
Engage your Returning Workforce with Professional Development BY MARK DOLINSKI, VP of Professional Development and Training
The training and development of your employees is more important than ever with the rapidly changing dynamics of the marketplace. Leading organizations have invested wisely in employees because the benefits are vast and diverse. This investment strategy benefits employees, retention, talent attraction and positions the organization for future growth. The training of employees has the immediate benefit of improving quality and productivity. Not only does employee development go beyond helping the employee with their current job, it also helps create a more adaptable culture to meet changing needs in both the workplace and marketplace. Less obvious is the value training and development has today with employees and the success of the organization. Organizations are facing uncertainty in dealing with the ongoing effects of COVID-19 on a multitude of fronts such as remote work, vaccinations, new work safety protocols and pertaining to the psychological impact of isolation and cognitive decline. “In the absence of the social interaction that our brain expects, increased isolation and loneliness
can lead to increased risk for cognitive decline,” says Kalina Michalska from the University of California. Focusing on learning can help employees deal with these issues while gaining the skills necessary to overcome these challenging times. McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm, suggests that companies craft a talent strategy that develops employees’ critical digital and cognitive capabilities, their social interaction and emotions, and their adaptability and resilience. Helping to develop employees’ emotional intelligence also brings the value of helping employees, teams and departments to better handle the stress brought about by the pandemic both at home and in the workplace. The benefit to the organization is in building organic growth, operating more efficiently and accelerating growth. Smart organizations are using this moment to rethink how business is done, to become more agile and nimble, and to increase speed and productivity to capture more market share and to enter new lines of profitable business. The Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA)
is here to help you start 2022 on the right path with developing and retaining your top talent and as you welcome your remote workers back to the office. The start of the year allows everyone the opportunity to renew their goals, to recommit to growth and to focus on having the best year ever. One way to achieve this is by sharpening your professional competencies. Starting in January, the GRCA is offering an array of professional development programs to help you have your best year ever, including its Lead Worker Certificate Program, Supervisor Training Certificate Program, Essentials for Effective Management and Essentials of Effective Leadership. No matter where you are in your professional development, GRCA is here to help you and your organization grow. Register today! HOW IT STARTED
Rachel and Corey met on the dating app, Bumble. Recalls Rachel, “The first thing he texted me was, ‘I rode a horse once. His name was Big Red. He was big and he was red,’ and for some reason I found this hilarious. By our second date we were already planning our life together. The actual proposal came when after pumpkin picking, Corey and Rachel went back to their farm to take fall family photos. He had her pick out the perfect spot, and they took a few test photos before he got down on one knee to propose. Says Rachel, “It was the most beautiful fall day, and it was intimate and perfect because our dog, Rhodey, and our horses were there; we included them in the photos as well.” Rachel’s engagement ring has special meaning as it was gifted by her late mother, Cynthia Boscov.
THE BIG DAY
In attendance was Rachel’s father, Jim Boscov, as well as Corey’s mother, Pam Leake; his stepfather, Jeffrey Leake; father, Randy Moser and stepmother, Michaelann Moser. The Maid of Honor was Rachel’s best friend and college roommate, Megan Allen. Chad Moser, Corey’s brother, was Best Man. Rachel wore a custom-designed dress by Velma Lee and Kate Spade sneakers. Corey and the groomsmen wore blue sharkskin suits by Lauren by Ralph Lauren from Men’s Wearhouse, Wyomissing. Their weddings rings, from Van Scoy Jewelers, Wyomissing, coordinate with matching sapphire accents. Guests enjoyed catering from Boscov’s Catering from the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Reading, including a special Maryland Table celebrating Corey’s home state featuring crab dip with toasted baguettes, Maryland Crab Soup with oyster crackers and crab cakes with tartar and cocktail sauces. Other items included a grill station with assorted kebobs, a brisket station and a French Fry Bar. Drinks were served from a horse trailer bar brought by Roaming Libations, Kinzer, PA, and were named for the couple’s cats: Dibny, Logan and Miles, and their horses: Captain, Parker and Mary Jane. The three-tier pink champagne cake was by Ady Cakes, West Reading. Music was provided by the Don Eaton Band of Philadelphia, and the couple danced their first song to Livin’ on Love by Alan Jackson. The decorating was in shades of blush, navy, burgundy and slate blue, done by Wishes Entertaining and Event Design, Reading.

LOOKING BACK
Corey: What did you first think when you saw your bride on your wedding day? All I could think about is how lucky I am. Rachel: What would you say the highlight of your Big Day was? Finally being able to celebrate with all of our family and friends. Note: This was the couple’s second wedding as the first fell during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, being held at her father’s home in Wyomissing and being limited to just immediate family. The ceremony was followed by a dinner at Anthony’s Trattoria, Reading.

Casual Fine Dining in an 1827 Historic Landmark
What do you remember most from your wedding day? Corey: for me, it was our first dance. Rachel: walking down the aisle and seeing my handsome husband for the first time. How did you feel the day before your wedding? The day before our wedding was a little stressful because we had to work on preparing the farm. Luckily, we had Corey’s brother Chad and my best friend, Megan, to help out. We couldn’t have done it without their support. How was the Honeymoon? Because it’s tough to get away from their farm and horses, the newlyweds haven’t honeymooned yet, but their plan is to travel to Italy. What are your Future Plans? Rachel, owner of DeHaven Equine, and Corey, a police officer, just plan on enjoying time together, establishing their professions and traveling before settling down to start a family.

Dress & Tuxes: L&H Bridal Rack, Sinking Spring Hair & Makeup: I DO…. Event Hair & Makeup, Pottstown Cake: Always More Cake, Reading
HOW IT STARTED
Kaitlin and Chris were invited to join friends on a cruise in January of 2019, and Chris knew it would be the perfect opportunity to pop the question. He recalls, “I took a day off work and went to every jewelry store in Berks County. I ended up finding the ring at Wm. H Diller Jewelers in West Reading, and everything was set.” But on the drive to the airport, Kaitlin told Chris she didn’t want to get married as long as they could continue to go on adventures like the one planned. Chris took to heart that he knew that she would be surprised when he asked. He says, “While at port in Grand Cayman, my plan was to propose on the beach. We ended up separated from our friends, who were supposed to take pictures, and I called it off. By the time we got back on the ship, we did not have the greatest day, and I thought the proposal was a bust. We reconnected with our friends and went to the top deck. As I held her and looked out over the moonlit island, I figured it was now or never. My friend handed me the ring, and I got down on one knee. The first words out of her mouth were ʻoh, sh*t.’ But she ultimately said ʻyes.’ The proposal was not what I had envisioned, but I would not change a single thing about it.”
THE BIG DAY
In attendance were Kaitlin’s parents, Robert and Melissa Specht, and Matt’s parents, Jeffrey and Kim Young. The Man of Honor was Kaitlin’s best friend, Mike Cagagis. Ian Donohue, Chris’s best friend, was Best Man. The ceremony was performed in The Museum’s perennial gardens, and the reception was in The Stone Terrace Tent. Guests enjoyed eats by Russo’s Gourmet Foods Market, Wyomissing, including assorted meats, tomato pie, ham and cheese wrapped asparagus, pasta with spinach and tomato in a cream sauce, chicken sauteed in white wine and sausage with peppers, onions and potatoes. The beer served at the bar was purchased from Sly Fox, Wyomissing. Music was provided by DJ Menace, Danny Cole, and the couple’s first dance was to Then, by Brad Paisley. The decorating was by Leo Design Gallery, West Reading.

LOOKING BACK
Chris: What did you first think when you saw your bride on your wedding day? I had been incredibly anxious all day up until the first look. When I finally got to see her, I remember finally feeling a sense of peace. I thought that she looked beautiful, and that feeling of peace made everything come together and become real.

How did you feel the day before your wedding? And the day after? Says Kaitlin, “My stomach was doing back flips the entire time. The day before everything dawned on me that there was just one more day to be in front of everyone during our most intimate moments together. The day after, all of that anxiety was gone. The day went by so fast that I just wish we had more time to dance and enjoy more time with everyone.” Says Chris, “The day before, I was nervous but it helped that I was able to keep busy working on final preparations. It also helped that we had family over before the rehearsal, so we spent the day talking and catching up. The day after was a huge relief. Everything came together perfectly, and it was nice to spend time relaxing with my wife.”

Kaitlin: What would you say the highlight of your Big Day was? Having the first look with Chris. I was way too excited for him to see what kind of dress I picked out and to see me all dressed up. His face was lit up like a house decorated in Christmas lights. He just looked so happy seeing me. It was such a great idea for us to see each other before the ceremony so we could have some time together before being in front of our friends and family.

HOW IT STARTED
Matt (a Private Wealth Advisor at Goldman Sachs) planned a weekend upstate in Tarrytown, NY, starting with dinner at Blue Hill Stone Barns, a sustainable agriculture mecca with amazing farm-to-table food. The waiter took the pair to a private room filled with candles. Half-way through the tasting menu, Matt popped the question to Lily (CEO at Sorrelli Inc., headquartered in Kutztown). He had framed the napkins the couple scribbled on from their first date, and shared that he knew from Day 1 that a proposal was on the horizon. Shares Lily, “It was incredibly sweet. We immediately called our parents to share the good news.”
THE BIG DAY
In attendance were Lily’s parents, Kermit and Lisa Oswald, and Matt’s parents, Dr. Mark and Randi Grand. The Maid of Honor was Lily’s sister, Ivy. Ryan Grand, Matt’s brother, was Best Man. Guests enjoyed eats from non-traditional food trucks run by Pitruco Pizza based in Philadelphia, Gourmand Café of Wyomissing and WOW Wagon from Gilbertsville. The lobster rolls from WOW Wagon were a huge hit, and the Berks Lebanon Bologna sandwich from Gourmand was a local classic. Dessert was a selection of French macarons from Heavenly Macarons of Orwigsburg and a cake from Ady Cakes, West Reading, decorated with pressed flowers that Lisa Oswald collected in the spring. Music was provided by the Troy Curtis Band from On the Move, and the couple’s first dance was to So Into You, a Childish Gambino cover of Tamia. The beautiful décor was by Leo Design Gallery, West Reading.
Create a Truly Unique Experience LOOKING BACK
Matt: What did you first think when you saw your bride on your wedding day? She had morning sickness that day before she left to get ready, so I was honestly worried about how she was feeling! What would each of you say the highlight of your Big Day was? We announced to all of our friends and family after our ceremony that we are expecting a baby boy in December; our brothers shot off blue confetti canons, and it was pretty magical. How did you feel the day before your wedding? And the day after? The day before the wedding was stressful! We were prepping a lot because the welcome BBQ was at my [Lily’s] parents' house, so there was a lot to do to set up! The day after was a big relief, after rescheduling our wedding four times, and getting engaged in 2018, we were so happy to be officially done with wedding planning!

The band was amazing and I loved being on the dance floor with my bride and all of our loved ones.” Lily agrees, saying, “I remember dancing the night away with all of our friends and family.” How was the Honeymoon? We went to Mykonos in Greece. We had both always wanted to go, and it did not disappoint. We had some amazing meals and relaxing beach time and got to see a part of the world we'd always wanted to explore. What are your Future Plans? Balance
GO FOR
“Bedroom design does really well whenever symmetry is possible,” says Lyndsey Hinkle, Owner/ Principal Designer of Wise Interiors, based in the Reading area. When arranging bedroom furniture, think in pairs. “Two matching nightstands and lamps on either side of the bed are ideal.” This mirror-image layout lends balance to your room and helps the space to feel calm and peaceful. “Don’t over-crowd your room,” advise Chris and Connie Fecera, President and Store Designer of Fecera’s Furniture. Trying to wedge too much into your bedroom could make the space feel smaller and stressful. If you’re fortunate to have a larger space, make the most of it. “If your room allows, a kingsized bed is very comfortable for two people,” the Feceras say. Hinkle also notes, “Clearance on either side of the bed is a must if there are two people sleeping here.” This practical detail is important for keeping dust at bay, since ample room will make it easier to vacuum. A cleaner space will help you breathe easier and feel more rested.
Storage and More.
When arranging your bedroom, storage space is key. “A dresser and mirror is a good choice for clothing storage,” say the Feceras. “Some dressers have secret drawers for storing jewelry or important papers.” Artful storage keeps a bedroom organized and reduces visual clutter. For rooms with a smaller footprint, “consider a bed with storage drawers on the sides of the bed and at the foot. Some headboards have storage at the head also,” say the Feceras. A bed with plenty of storage may eliminate the need for a dresser. If you have extra space in your bedroom, the Feceras suggest adding a comfortable chair or soft bench. A bench can provide additional storage and seating at the end of your bed.
The Right Hue for You.
Color plays a big role in feeling relaxed and ready for sleep. “Cool palettes and neutral tones invoke a feeling of calm so they are a perfect choice for bedrooms,” says Kim Updegraff, owner of Shade Tree Interiors. “Palettes of whites, grays, light greens and blues are easy on the eyes and mind.” The Feceras recommend a similar palette: “Blues, tans, pale greens and some grey shades are restful.” “Right now, design is all about the neutrals,” adds Hinkle. “I would recommend neutral color palettes such as whites, creams, beiges and navy.” For windows and walls, neutrals create a blank canvas of creative décor possibilities. “Window treatments fabricated in neutral fabrics allow clients to swap bedding and accessories easily to give them a new look as seasons change,” says Updegraff. After creating a neutral foundation, have fun with pops of color. “Add more color into your bedroom design by adding in rusts, olives, slate blues or soft blush tones with your accessories and bedding. If you are feeling really bold you could go for a paneled or shiplapped accent wall in a deep navy,” says Hinkle. The Feceras also suggest adding artwork to your walls to incorporate restful colors into your room’s design.
LIVING IN STYLE
Texture
LET’S TALK ABOUT
If you’re looking to reinvigorate your bedroom, seek out textures and materials that make you feel cozy and stress-free. “I would suggest an upholstered headboard. The softness exudes peace and tranquility,” says Hinkle. The Feceras agree: “Upholstered headboards are popular and can add interest to your room.” As an additional benefit, upholstered headboards provide comfort and support when you’re reading in bed. Small changes to your bedroom can have a big impact. A fresh set of sheets can rejuvenate your space. Flannel sheets offer enhanced coziness during the winter. For warmer months (or warmer sleepers), natural fibers like cotton
or linen provide cool, breathable comfort. “Layering textured tonal bedding together creates an inviting bed that is just waiting to be crawled into,” says Hinkle. Choose your favorite color and add bedding in its various shades. “I personally love a neutral duvet with pops of color and pattern for pillows,” says Updegraff. “It’s an effortless way to change your décor with the least amount of expense.” Play with texture by selecting fleecy blankets, a fluffy duvet or a comforter. “In the colder months, use a fur throw for the end of your bed or a fuzzy comforter to soften the room,” say the Feceras. Texture also plays a role with windows. New window treatments can transform the look and feel of a bedroom. “Lightweight and textural fabrics such as linens work great for window treatments because they feel light and airy, whisking away the stress of the day and promoting relaxation,” says Updegraff. Just like bedding, layers are an ideal strategy for windows. “Shades that are light filtering will add to the quality of your sleep,” says Hinkle. She advises layering them with drapes to create a “functional yet beautiful design element.” Updegraff agrees. “Adding multiple layers like drapes, valances and shades can also offer a room darkening effect while adding a beautiful aesthetic.” When thinking about texture and softness, don’t forget your floor. “If you have hardwood floors, consider an area rug which will help to soften, warm and give you a restful feeling in your room,” say the Feceras. A soft, inviting carpet or an area rug under your bed can serve as the perfect landing space before going to bed and when getting up in the morning.

Now that you’ve arranged and decorated your ultimate cozy space, it’s time to get some rest. Here are a few suggestions to send you off to dreamland.
Comfort
& SUPPORT
“First and foremost is a good comfortable mattress,” say the Feceras. “You spend almost half of your life in a bed, so consider that when selecting a mattress.” Mattresses come in varying levels of support and softness. Finding your perfect choice is a matter of individual preference and your preferred sleeping position. If your partner moves around a lot, memory foam can be a good choice since it isolates motion. “Mattresses should be replaced every 8-9 years,” say the Feceras. “A good quality mattress averages at $1000, but you can spend as little as $299 if you choose.” They recommend protecting your investment with a mattress cover. Many covers are washable and have added features like extra padding. While you’re thinking about a mattress, don’t forget your pillow: “A good pillow is important for a good night’s sleep,” say the Feceras. With a variety of materials, including memory foam, your ideal pillow is out there. Look for one that matches your sleeping position, whether you’re a back, side or stomach sleeper — or a combination of these.

Cool Tools.
Take advantage of the latest technology to stay comfortable and get your best night’s sleep. Some mattresses offer a built-in cooling feature with a layer of gel. “Optimal sleep temperature is 68 degrees, so cooling gel helps to lower body temperatures,” say the Feceras. Hinkle recommends a Chilipad. “It helps you sleep at the right temperature and keeps you from waking up in the middle of the night with the sweats. It is especially great for athletes and pregnant or menopausal women.” This hydro-powered mattress pad helps people reach a cooler core body temperature so they can enjoy deeper, more refreshing sleep. Two remotes allow each sleeper to set a specific temperature for their side of the bed.

Banish Stressors.
Here’s one you’ve probably heard before, and it bears repeating: “Leave electronics out of the bedroom,” says Hinkle. It can be hard to put down your phone or stop watching your favorite streaming show. If you wake up in the middle of the night, electronic devices can be tempting if they are at arm’s reach. Hinkle adds, "Avoid having any kind of work-related items in the bedroom. If you can avoid having your home office in your bedroom, do this at all costs. Also, any kind of work-out equipment shouldn't be in the bedroom either. You should feel relaxed and at peace in here so anything that screams work has got to go.” This advice can be extended to keeping anything stressful out of your sleeping space, whether it’s papers that need to be sorted or laundry that needs folding.
Get into a bedtime routine. Whether you have kids at home or you think back to your own childhood, going through a similar set of steps each evening can prepare your mind and body for sleep. “To help you fall asleep, try dimming the lights and meditating before bed,” says Hinkle. Journaling can also be a great way to get your thoughts out and to put your mind at ease. For adults, it can be more challenging to stick to the same bedtime each night, since there’s no one to say ‘no’ to your request of “Five more minutes, please!”

Plants make great housemates. Besides their eye-catching colors and textures, these living accessories improve the air you breathe. Hinkle is a big fan of adding plants to the bedroom. “Don’t overdo it, but one or two air purifying plants such as a snake plant or a spider plant add depth and life into the space, and they serve a purpose while you sleep.”
Lights Out.
“The importance of a dark, quiet room can’t be stressed enough in getting good rest. Window treatments are an integral part of bedroom design for this reason,” says Updegraff. “It’s very important to provide function as well as form.” Window treatments impact your sleep by letting light in, or keeping light out. “Getting a good night’s sleep should be priority one. If my clients are sensitive to light, we can offer shades that completely darken the room by adding side channels.” For people with non-traditional sleep schedules, room-darkening shades are essential. “Many third shift medical workers order them so that they can comfortably sleep during daylight hours,” adds Updegraff.

All the Sounds.
“Another must for getting great sleep is a sound machine,” says Hinkle. White noise is made up of all of the sounds a human ear can hear, and it’s great at masking any distracting sounds. These versatile devices help create a relaxing environment by producing white noise or nature sounds. A sound machine can be a useful companion when you’re traveling to help create a restful environment in an unfamiliar space. If you are sensitive to sounds, window coverings can also come to your aid. Besides keeping out light, multiple layers and materials “can also help to dampen outside noises and provide added insulation for more restful sleep,” says Updegraff.

JANUARY 2022 | berkscountyliving.com
Special Occasions by Panevino with Chef David Brennan “Panevino has a new location for private events,” says gourmet Chef David Brennan, “with a spectacular all-new décor designed by Angela Ehst, located in Wernersville.” The fine-dining chef and his wife, Trish, a full-time pastry chef, are excited for what’s ahead in 2022: “There are 44 seats, with a small bar, for exclusive and intimate receptions and parties,” says Chef David. “Bridal showers, baby showers, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, private and corporate dinners — everything we do is custom.” What’s on their mouth-watering five-course dinner menu? “Our specialty is our homemade pasta and our risottos, such as All-Seafood Risotto with shrimp, crab, lobster and scallops, and our Wild Mushroom Risotto,” says Chef David. “We also do a Braised Short Rib of Beef on a Butternut Squash Polenta with Roasted Vegetables.” Desserts include Buttermilk Panna Cotta with Strawberries and Balsamic and Peach and Blueberry Cobbler with Vanilla Gelato. 600 E. Penn Avenue, Wernersville For reservations, email: info@panevinoreading.com
Emily’s Carl DeGrazia, owner of Emily’s, loves to credit the historic character and expansive atmosphere of his elegant restaurant built in 1827. “We have five dining rooms inside — just right for smaller, private events — while outside we have an all-year-round covered deck that holds about 80 people. There’s a heating system for inside events in the winter,” he says. “In spring, summer and fall, we also have a little patio area in front of the deck, between the creek and the deck, which seats about 30 people.” So, Emily’s can accommodate about 100 people. Expansively set on five acres, “We’ve had a dozen or so weddings happen right here on the bridge,” reveals DeGrazia. “We tend to work off our regular menu for a sit-down dinner or buffet. For a higher-end budget, we might do filet mignon and Emily’s crab cakes and a chicken dish; for others, we might tone it down a bit and do chicken, seafood (such as salmon) and a beef.” Emily’s crab cakes are a clear favorite: “We’ve had this recipe for about 15 years, and we use lump crab meat. Also, we handle any vegetarian and gluten-free requests, easily. And do consider the hors d’oeuvres menu.” 3790 Morgantown Rd., Mohnton 610.856.7887 | emilysberks.com
Mimmo’s Italian Restaurant “One of our best features as a reception or party site is space,” says Mike Brutto, Manager of Mimmo’s. “The space we have is big, the food is really good, and when you match the building with the food, it all works!” The passion and fire beneath his voice speaks volumes: Mimmo’s loves having Berks Countians celebrate their special days with them. “We do all sorts of reception events and dinners. Our banquet room holds up to 120 people. Of course, we also do smaller groups of around 20 people or so in another dining room.” Options include sit-down service off a limited menu or buffet style for groups over 40 or 50 people. While most items on the menu are available, “the most popular entrée choice is the chicken parm,” says Mike. “But what also makes us special is our homemade pastas, ravioli and lasagna.” “Depending on the event,” Brutto says, “we’ll set up a dessert table, with cream puffs, mini-pastries and homemade cannoli — always a hit — plus tiramisu.” In short, “We make your event as intimate or as casual as you want it to be. We tailor it to your tastes — as upscale or as casual as you like.” 290 Morgantown Rd., Reading | 610.373.2800 | mimmos.org
The Peanut Bar Restaurant With twinkling lights, a long tradition and “loads of family memories,” as owner Michael Leifer puts it, The Peanut Bar is a definite go-to for engagement parties, showers, rehearsal dinners and wedding receptions. “We do everything from very small parties of 6 to 10 in one room, and up to 90 people in another room. We’ll even open up the whole restaurant for a private event, where we can serve up to 200 people.” Ever an accommodating restaurateur, Leifer explains, “Generally, we are casual in the way we do things, but we can go as formal as you want us to be.” He’s the personal point of contact for events: “Just call the restaurant and ask for me. We set up a menu with the party host, and everything is done to suit the guests.” Most popular dishes: Lemon Parmesan Flounder, Broiled Jumbo Lump Maryland Crab Cakes, Tournedos Diane, vegetarian offerings and German-style Chicken Schnitzel. “We have a full range of appetizers as well,” says Leifer. “It’s all about the people. We’re very committed to doing flexibly what the family or business wants us to do, but 98 percent of the time we do seated meals.” 332 Penn St., Reading 610.376.8500 peanutbar.com
