LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Staff Speaks If you could rent your dream car for a road trip, what would it be and what must it include?

At Berks County Living, we aim to create content for everyone, but once a year, we look to especially cater to our male readers. Guys: June is your month! From spicing things up with eats and drinks found right here in Berks (page 30) to where to go to spruce up your grooming routine (page 16), we’ve got information you can put to use in this month’s issue. In our Living In Style feature, hop inside a cool Mercedes Sprinter van and get inspiration for your summer road trip. You can even get a 360-degree view online at berkscountyliving.com. Also in this issue, we highlight some standout Berks Men In Business. Be it for a product or service, we encourage all of our readers to get to know them, and their businesses, a bit better starting on page 18. And as always, we urge you to support and shop local first. June is also the month in which we celebrate Pride. Do you know how Pride got its start? Pride Month is celebrated each June in tribute to those individuals involved in the Stonewall Riots of 1969. On June 28 in New York City, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club, resulting in bar patrons, staff and neighborhood residents rioting outside. A movement continued over a six-day period aiming to send a message that demanded the establishment of places where LGBT+ people could go and be transparent about their sexual orientation without the fear of being arrested. We hope you’ll flip to page 27 to get to know three Berks residents a bit better and to learn just what pride means to them. It’s the perfect month to wear your rainbow colors proudly. Best,

Need ideas to celebrate dad? Check out a couple to get you started on page 40!

Wear your PA Pride

Show off your Pennsylvania pride with products from Dutchy Town. Launched in 2020, Dutchy Town was inspired by other shops carrying regionally themed apparel, noticing that Reading and many other surrounding areas did not have any spirit wear. “We see Dutchy Town as the only go-to ‘spirit wear’ representing our community,” say creators Paige and Mike Lamparella. You can choose from an assortment of Pennsylvania-themed apparel and accessories from the online shop. Say Paige and Mike, “As the city of Reading, the anchor of our community, and the surrounding areas look to revitalize, we are hoping that our apparel and accessories will help share some pride for those of us who want to see the city and the region succeed in the future.” Currently, Dutchy Town is an online-only business with products created on-demand. Many new designs and items are in the works, including baseball caps. Want to check it out? Visit dutchytown.com. — EVE FETTER 8

Golden Age Fashionista

Museum Exhibit Salutes a Screen Legend

Classic and comfortable are two words that spring to mind when considering Hepburn’s fashion style of the ages. While she wore elegant costumes for film and stage, she also boldly donned everyday outfits that included wide-leg trousers, often in khaki or neutral tones — a trend that challenged yet spoke volumes of encouragement to the post-suffrage generation of women. One of her final wishes was that her collection of textiles be given to an educational institution. Following her death, they were donated to the Kent State University Museum in Ohio. In this exhibit, borrowed from Kent, you get a glimpse of both her elegant and casual wear. Whether you need a history refresher or are experiencing Hepburn for the first time, a brief biography detailing her life and profession, as well as her preferred fashion designers, such as Walter Plunkett, will be on display to take you back in time. As Schweigert says, “It will be nostalgic for some people, and for other people it will be an introduction to her.” Discover roughly 40 styles worn by Hepburn from film, stage and her personal wardrobe comprised of 1930s patterns, beautiful fabrics and superior designs. A number of the displays feature an accompanying photo of the film in which Hepburn is wearing the very ensemble before you. Film posters and other fun memorabilia will be showcased throughout the exhibit. The Museum sets the stage for the social and historical context of the 30s, leaving visitors with the often-missed insight as to the type of person Hepburn was. Schweigert states, “The idea of her as an individual, I think visitors will go away with a better understanding of her as a person as well as a performer.” Explore the wonderful merchandise in the Museum gift shoppe related to the exhibit and take a small memory of Hepburn home.

Katharine Hepburn…a timeless film legend. Known for her eccentricity, intellect, beauty and pioneering fashion statements, her life takes the spotlight in a special exhibit at the Reading Public Museum beginning on June 12. Hepburn was born in Connecticut in the early 1900s. Her stardom rose in the 1930s. With a career lasting more than six decades and earning her four Academy Awards, Hepburn died in 2003. She, her film roles, personality and style touched the hearts of many fans. Did you know Hepburn has a relationship with our neighboring city of Philadelphia, both personally and professionally? She was a 1928 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, where her academic interest was in history. She later had a starring role in the film A Philadelphia Story. As Curator of Art, Scott Schweigert says of the Hepburn exhibit, “We thought with A Philadelphia Story being one of her most famous films and the fact she went to Bryn Mawr College, she has some Pennsylvania ties, which is always nice.” The museum

DID YOU KNOW?

Just Right. Interior lighting must be set at certain dimmed levels in order not to negatively affect the textiles and ensure they are kept well preserved. Medal of Honor. Bryn Mawr College created a Katharine Hepburn Medal, awarded every four years to honor and recognize women who transform lives, especially in activism and the arts.

AROUND TOWN IN THE LIMELIGHT What are some of the growth opportunities you offer for local businesses? We have options that fit any budget. Whether you’re a mom-and-pop bakery or a large corporation, we can tailor our support to meet your needs. I think the best part about my job is that the Fightins is not a one-size-fits-all organization, and we have a huge number of loyal fans who come through the park, so we can help no matter what your business goals are. When it comes down to it, we’re a local business too, and we want to do our part. Speaking of doing your part, are you involved with other organizations in Berks? Giving back to the community is very important for the Fightin Phils and for me. We see it as an obligation we have and work very hard to create opportunities and to give back. I help with our Dream League, and I also volunteer with the Humane Society. We can work as many as 100 hours a week during the season if we have backto-back games, but when we aren’t working, I take every chance I can get to give back. Do you have any new programming in the works for this season? We started our season in early May, and we’re very excited to welcome fans back to the park this year. And FirstEnergy Stadium is not just a baseball park, it’s also a community venue. Every time the team goes out of town, we’re hosting events. Anything we can do to get people to the ballpark and to support our partners is a priority for us. And, of course, whether it’s your family or your business coming to Baseballtown this year, your safety is a priority for us as well.

IN THE LIMELIGHT WITH

Anthony Pignetti

Executive Director of Business Development, Reading Fightin Phils BY ALI BECHTEL | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS

When you’re at FirstEnergy Stadium, you see fireworks shows, giveaways and between-inning entertainment. But for Anthony Pignetti, Executive Director of Business Development for the Fightin Phils, those are opportunities to help local businesses grow. What brought you to Baseballtown? I actually started as an intern. I graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism from Point Park University in Pittsburgh and really wanted to get involved in sports management. But I graduated in 2008, and the economy wasn’t so great. So, I literally called and emailed every single minor league team in the country and heard amazing things about the internship program here. I worked full-time in the group sales office and always had an interest in the operation's corporate side, so I worked on that in my free time. At the end of the season, I was lucky enough to be hired full-time to work in special events and advertising. Now I’m in my eleventh year with the team.

JUNE 2021 | berkscountyliving.com

Is your job as fun as it sounds? Yeah, it’s fun. It’s a lot of work; it’s a lot of hours, but it pays off when you’re at a place that brings people so much joy. I see people come in with their families and it makes me proud to be helping them make memories and to be helping our local businesses grow. DID YOU KNOW?

40 Under 40. Anthony was recently named to the Reading Eagle’s 40 Under 40, an award that recognizes outstanding leaders in Berks County, for his tireless work in the community and his contributions to Baseballtown’s success. Where Work Meets Play. Every

member of the Fightin Phils front office team has completed the organization’s internship program, which is known across the country for the depth of real-world knowledge it provides. Recent college graduates are encouraged to learn more at fightins.com.

AROUND TOWN THOUGHTS FROM THE CHAMBER ALLIANCE

Take Advantage of Living in Pretzel City, USA BY DEREK HARRIS, Research & Technology Coordinator, GRCA, 606 Court St., Reading

Craft beer has been one of the hottest trends in the Greater Reading area over the past few years. When having a beer at a local brewery or getting a growler filled, few things go better with beer than pretzels. We are fortunate to have one of the best pretzel bakeries in the country in the heart of our community, Unique Snacks. As a 6th generation family-owned pretzel company celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2021, Unique Snacks has made a lasting impact in Reading being known as Pretzel City USA. “In 1921, my family set out on a mission to create unique healthy pretzels that were not only simple and delicious, but also nutritious,” says Justin Spannuth, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Unique Snacks. “Today, more than a century later, that mission has not wavered.” This dedication just happens to pair well with the countless great breweries all over Berks County.

Stop by your favorite, refill your growler, or grab a six-pack of what is new and pair it with Unique’s Sourdough Rings, the perfect pretzel for any beerlover. It has malted barley and hops and comes in a fun ring shape that you can store on the neck of your beer bottle! When it comes to fun and flavor, there really is nothing better than a salty pretzel and a local beer. One of my favorite breweries right now is Schaylor Brewing Company in Shillington. Its plum sour, Plumus Rubus, is my go-to beverage of choice, and when visiting, you can stop by another pretzel city contributor: Tom Sturgis. Tom Sturgis is just up the street from Schaylor in Shillington, making it an easy stop. Their Little Cheesers are a perfect twist on the mini pretzel. Their company store has plenty of options to choose from, and they still use time-tested methods for baking that have been around for generations. They have been in this location since the

1970s, helping the family-owned business live on to its 5th generation! Lifting up and supporting new and old local business in these difficult times is what makes Berks County special. The past and the present can not only coexist, but also thrive together and make us remember why we love this area. To participate in celebrating Unique’s 100year anniversary, pick up a bag of your favorite Unique Pretzels and use #UniqueSnacks to show them what you are snacking on. Bonus points if you tag the brewery highlighting what you have paired it with! UPCOMING EVENT De Mujer a Mujer Awards + Workshop, Thursday, June 10, 10am to Noon. This is a virtual event. THE LOOK

French clothing designer Christian Dior once said, “Grooming is the secret of real

elegance. The best clothes, the most wonderful jewels, the most glamorous beauty don’t count without good grooming.” Such thoughts apply to both women and men. And when it comes to grooming ideas for the guys, Berks is booming with choices.

While looking good will never be unpopular with men, their skin can be damaged by age and the sun, leaving them looking weathered and older than they feel. Sun protection, exfoliation, moisturizing and cleansing work together to help just about anyone feel better. Sometimes that’s not enough, and other services can be used as an aid or just for a basic pick-me-up. Skincare services for men at The Spa at Spring Ridge in Spring Township include a gentleman’s facial starting at $85. The customized service targets each guy’s skincare needs. Other services include laser treatments and a “bro-tox” treatment, all offered by trained aesthetic specialists who can determine the best options for an individual’s needs. Revision is a raved-about skincare line used for men at The Spa at Spring Ridge. It is a “result-oriented” line that doesn’t require a huge amount of time or a lot of products to see and achieve results. The packaging is sleek and designed to look gender-neutral, making it a popular choice with the male set. Gift certificates are available for services and products.

Muddy Creek Soap Company, a shop located in West Reading, offers many products for men. Using all-natural ingredients, several types of shaving soaps are available for $10. Featuring a rich, creamy lather and natural ingredients like bentonite clay, these soaps give a razor great slide and aid in pulling toxins from the skin. They come in a variety of scents: Bay Rum, Intuition, Mint Eucalyptus, Sandalwood, Sandalwood Patchouli, Tobacco and Amber. For best results, apply with a shaving brush. Another product enjoyed by men is beard oil, available for $19.95. For more moisture and a nice slip and slide while shaving, men should purchase the Pre-Game Natural Pre-Shave Oil. Use this natural oil, made with sweet almond, macadamia nut, argan, jojoba and fragrance oils, before applying your shave soap. Cool, refreshing and hydrating after shaving, the Post-Game Natural After-Shave Gel, made with organic aloe and organic witch hazel, is a popular option. Beard Wash has a bevy of fans for its ability to gently cleanse facial hair. Men can follow up with a beard oil to condition and help minimize dry skin. Custom gift baskets also are available.

MEANS TO ME

W hat started as a day to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots –

a significant catalyst for the Gay Rights Movement – has expanded into a month of reflection, education and celebration. This Pride Month, we’re highlighting what pride means to three local leaders and what they are doing in the local LGBTQ+ community and beyond to spread inclusion, diversity and love.

T

he second night after Johnathan arrived in Berks from Puerto Rico, he attended an LGBT Center event and has been actively involved in the community since. Two years later, he is the Youth and Health Resource Center Coordinator for Berks Teens Matter, and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer for Reading Pride.

Education for All

Johnathan Rodriguez Baez Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer with Reading Pride (He/Him)

Johnathan and the dedicated staff at Berks Teens Matter work with more than 32 partner organizations – including local educational institutions, healthcare providers and the City of Reading – to develop programs and practices to improve access to sexual health education and reduce teen pregnancy. But his efforts don’t stop with local youth. “Sexual health education is something that I try to bring to all things that I do. Not only because I’m passionate about it, but also because there’s a lot of stigma around it,” he explains. “Usually, when people put LGBTQ+ and sexual health together, it’s a conversation about STDs and promiscuity. That focus is too narrow; we need to be having a different conversation.” That passion for education and open communication has impacted Johnathan’s role with Reading Pride, too. Reading Pride's mission is to celebrate diversity in the Greater Reading LGBTQ+ community, which it has done through an annual Pride Celebration since 2006. But this year, that mission is expanding. “We want to be more than just a party in the park,” Johnathan says. The

executive board is expanding into educational workshops. To stay up-to-date on upcoming events, visit readingpridecelebration.org or follow @ReadingPride on Facebook.

What Does Pride Mean to You? “I think pride is an ever-changing concept, but at the end of the day, what drives me, what comforts me when I hear hateful or negative things about my community, is being humble,” Johnathan shares. “I’ve been a victim of homophobia, but that doesn’t mean I understand every single act of discrimination or that I’m able to put my myself in someone else’s shoes. But it does always remind me that I have pride, that I’m proud of the things that have happened in my life that made me stand up for myself, to love myself, to love the skin that I live in.” As the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer for Reading Pride, Johnathan says that those concepts, to him, mean genuinely listening when others are sharing their experiences and trying to see them through their eyes, instead of thinking about diversity on your terms and through the lens of your own experiences. “We need to hear more voices of females and femes; we need more voices of transmasculine and transfeminine people. Where are the intersex people when we talk about the community? We just need more presence and representation of all the letters in the LGBTQ+ alphabet. And we definitely need to stop putting together the conversation of LGBTQ+ people and STDs. We need to talk about positive sexual health education and lose the fear that I sometimes perceive of actually speaking about it in a positive way.” berkscountyliving.com | JUNE 2021

Michelle Dech

Executive Director of the LGBT Center of Greater Reading (She/Her)

T

he LGBT Center of Greater Reading's mission is to provide support services to the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. For Executive Director Michelle Dech, her board and their dedicated volunteer staff that means bringing the whole community together. “It’s all about inclusivity,” Michelle says of the center’s efforts. “Our LGBTQ+ community has never had an organization that provides actual support services, and we’re not the only group being underserved. When people recognize they need support, we’re here. It’s about all of us.”

Come as You Are In 2020, the center provided programming, support and advocacy for more than 4,000 people, with its reach extending far beyond the LGBTQ+ population. In addition to personal and issuebased advocacy programs and support groups for all ages, the LGBT Center also partners with more than 50 different local organizations and businesses to offer free counseling services, a clothing and toiletry closet, and a food pantry to anyone in need throughout Berks and far beyond. The center also hosts a full calendar of events each year aimed at bringing the entire community together. Follow along on Facebook @theLGBTCenterofGreaterReading for the schedule and updates. In only four years, the center has seen tremendous growth in size and programs offered. “We’re humbled by and grateful for all of the support we’ve received in the community. We could not do what we do without that support, and I’m not just talking about financial support. I’m talking about partnership, collaboration and acceptance,” says Dech.

Building a Support Structure That support comes not only from local organizations and businesses but also from the city and state levels. Michelle sits on the City of Reading’s Diversity Board, where she is working closely with Mayor Eddie Moran and his administration to implement equality and equity initiatives across the county.

Her passion and her work at the city level also caught the attention of Governor Tom Wolf. Michelle was recently appointed to the Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs, the first of its kind in the country. “In order to effect change, if you’re invited to the table you need to go to the table,” Michelle says of her involvement. “It’s a joy to have an administration that we can collaborate and partner with.”

What Does Pride Mean to You? “To me, pride is about living every day with integrity and honesty and to make a difference for others. I obviously couldn’t do what I do if I was

in the closet, but even before taking on this role, for me, it was living my truth and trying to help others do the same.” Michelle notes that Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community’s other holidays are important for celebrating the past that brought them here and the future of intersectional equality, but “Pride isn’t just a month. It’s a 365-day-a-year state of mind. It’s living your life authentically and having the courage to speak up and live your truth. There are so many people out there who can’t do that, and I hope it gives them strength. The more people who are able to come out and live authentically, and with integrity, the better it will be for everybody.”

"I want to make sure

Eddie Moran Mayor of Reading (He/Him)

M

ayor Eddie Moran and his administration are taking action to improve inclusivity and to celebrate diversity in the City of Reading. Since being elected in 2019, he has worked tirelessly to create a safer, more inclusive, and better city for everyone.

Leading by Example One of Mayor Moran’s first acts in office was to reactivate the city’s Diversity Board, and although COVID-19 hindered the group’s progress in 2020, he is confident that its impacts will be felt soon. “My hope is that they will be making some significant recommendations for policies that will enhance the quality of life for the LGBTQ+ community and all the individuals in our city,” he says. But Moran and his administration have not been sitting idle. “I am continuing to advocate for more inclusivity, diversity and acceptance. I work alongside many organizations like the LGBT Center, Reading Pride and The One Love Project and support different endeavors in public, from community clean-ups to pride festivals.

I continue to unite every community member by becoming an ally and showing love and compassion. I too dream of the day where no person ever needs to come out again; they can just live.” In addition to his community involvement, Mayor Moran implemented mandatory diversity training for the Reading Police Department in coordination with the NAACP of Reading, Abilities in Motion and the LGBT Center. He also actively advocated at the state level for the Equality Act. And his efforts are paying off. In December 2020, Reading received a score of 91/100 in the Annual Municipality Equality Index by the Human Rights Campaign – the only nationwide assessment of LGBTQ+ equality in municipal laws, policies and services. “To me, it’s an honor to lead by example and to be recognized for the inclusivity, unity and safety of the LGBTQ+ community members right here in our city,” he says.

What Does Pride Mean to You? “As a straight man and a leader of this city, pride means many things to me. I have been exposed to the community through family members of

my own who have had some challenges, who have not been comfortable, who have not felt welcome. There’s a long history of struggles and challenges for the LGBT community, and to me it’s a reminder that there’s so much more that needs to be done and that needs to change.” The City of Reading already has ordinances in place extending protections to the LGBTQ+ community in business, credit and housing that prohibit discrimination and the dangerous practice of conversion therapy on LBGTQ+ minors. Mayor Moran and his administration are working to take these initiatives a step further by creating a safe place for voices to be heard. “My hope is that one day more people will speak up and be more open about their sexual preferences without being targeted. I hope more individuals will join those whose voices are already being heard and help them speak more loudly. I know I’m in it. I want to make sure we celebrate inclusivity, diversity and empowerment. I want to build a community where people love one another.” 

When Robert Henning of Sinking Spring comes up with an idea, he literally builds on it.

W

hen Robert Henning of Sinking Spring comes up with an idea, he literally builds on it. From a professional standpoint, that’s his calling in life as the owner of H&H Construction Services, located in the same borough where he and his family reside. His company, which specializes in the commercial hospitality field, experienced the same symptoms as so many businesses with the impact of COVID-19 over the past year. The hotel construction industry pretty much came to a halt. The pandemic that nailed a part of his livelihood also impacted an important part of his and his family’s lifestyle: traveling. Robert, his wife Heather, and their three sons, Robert, 16, Brady, 14, and Andy, 10, all Wilson School District students, pride themselves as a family on the go.

ADVENTURES ON HOLD

From visiting ski resorts throughout the United States to cruises to trips to islands in tropical climates, travel has been a collective adventure for the Hennings. And then came the pandemic. The family has the good fortune of owning a shore home in Cape May, NJ, a property that was their go-to through the summer and into the fall. However, Robert was not content that they rely on that singular getaway. With airline travel both restricted and risky, and cruises temporarily beached, Robert decided to explore other options to feed the family travel bug. The answer came as an early Christmas present: a 2020 Mercedes Benz Sprinter conversion van. “In a way, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision,” says Robert. “COVID had truly hindered our ability to travel as a family in terms of our usual trips. We were doing some regional road trips, but wanted something comfortable for the longer ones.” Comfort also means spacious for this family of five and their two miniature long-haired Dachshunds, Chloe and Clancy, both 11. The Hennings’ Sprinter, rated a Class B recreational vehicle, comes pretty close to offering the comforts of home.

AMEN TO AMENITIES

The van, with a serene light gray interior, boasts expansive side windows with retractable shades, a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi, has a 10-passenger capacity with six full-size captain’s seats, two of which can do double duty as recliners, as well as a microwave, refrigerator, luggage compartment, towing capacity,

skylights…even a small bathroom, complete with a flushing toilet in the back. “Our neighbor has dubbed it the ‘mobile lounge,’” says Heather. Just three months into owning the van, the family had logged trips to Florida, Niagara Falls, the Poconos, Seven Springs and other regional spots. “We did a lot of traveling through the Northeast when I was growing up,” Robert says. “This is a catalyst for us to do the same in our area. Our kids have seen many islands, but not nearly as much around here.”

The Sprinter, as any private vehicle does, allows its owners to make quick travel decisions. The couple recalled watching the news in late February and seeing a report of a completely ice-encased Niagara Falls. Not wanting their sons to miss this natural spectacle, the family piled into the Sprinter and made the six-hour, 390-mile trip north. “We heard it was frozen over and we got there in the middle of the night,” says Robert, “but by that time, the falls were no longer frozen and there was just ice on the river at the bottom.”

EATING OUT

The RV has also proved its worth to the Hennings during the COVID shutdown’s impact on the restaurant industry. With its incorporated table tops and trays, the couple, whether with their sons or friends, have been able to order takeout, pull up to the restaurant, and enjoy the great food and beverages in their home away from home. Heather is looking forward to the return of concerts and festivals and sports events where tailgating will be able to take on a much more refined, and comfortable, feel. During the holiday season, Heather was among the committee members judging the light displays in Sinking Spring. With a designated driver, the committee enjoyed some bubbly and snacks as they cruised the municipality and evaluated the many decorated properties. The longest trip the family has made in the Sprinter so far has been to Orlando, FL. The Hennings decided to do the 17-plus hour drive to Disney Springs more or less nonstop. The capability of the Sprinter to sleep six factored into that decision. The family’s collective energy petered out in North Carolina and a Starbucks parking lot served as a safe rest stop. Though a bit snug, those few hours of sleep fueled the rest of the trip south. Heather noted tight quarters for six wouldn’t be optimal for frequent stops on longer trips, but the cabin can comfortably sleep four and fairly luxuriously two. 36

ENCAMPMENT ADVANTAGES

Campsites supply the necessary requirements to support the Sprinter’s amenities, particularly when it comes to filling the RV’s fresh water tank and disposing the wastewater. The Sprinter, unlike traditional large RVs, handles easily on major highways, country roads and more urbanized streets and parking areas. Robert notes the difference between bigger RVs and the Sprinter was a major decision-making factor as a relative has one of the former and Heather, especially, was uncomfortable with its size.

“She’s not so confident on the interstate with that one,” he says. “When it comes to the ease of driving, it’s actually just a little longer than a Chevy conversion van.” “You don’t need another vehicle to do those errands (when at a campground),” says Heather. Robert also praised the Sprinter’s strong performance in the snow, a definite plus for this family of skiers. “If there are six or eight inches of snow in the morning, it’s not an issue to get to the mountains,” he says. Sprinter RVs also a bit longer on price than most of their Class B competitors. While Robert and Heather did not disclose the cost of their Sprinter, comparable ones viewed online can range from $100,000 to $150,000 or more depending on specific amenities. “It’s a long-term investment for us,” says Heather. A member of the state auditor general’s department, she, like her entrepreneurial spouse, considers the bottom line professionally and personally.

GROWING WITH THEIR BOYS

Besides their forays for education and enjoyment throughout the United States, Robert and Heather say the Sprinter will surely be integral over the next decade visiting colleges as the boys continue their scholastic journeys. They also envision the boys and their friends, when older, using the Sprinter for those skiing trips.

Saving money on hotel stays helps that bottom line. Take that December 2020 Florida trip as an example: gas on the way south amounted to $130 total, while, coming home, the fuel cost was around $145. “It’s diesel-fueled and very high efficiency,” says Robert. While the Sprinter’s purchase price may be off-putting for many, unlike many vehicle purchases, there can be a very real return on the investment. And that’s clearly the case for Robert and Heather. “We were aware the novelty could wear off,” says Robert, “but we were watching what came out with some popularity in the last year, the renting out of RVs.” Think of it as a sort of mobile Air BNB. “We’re seriously considering renting it out, maybe two or three times in the next year,” she says. The couple cites the website rentmysprinter.com which handles the logistics, including that all-important insurance and liability. “It’s happening a lot on the West Coast and recently on the East Coast,” says Robert. “It’s a trend coming this direction.”

GO WEST, YOUNG MEN

The Hennings are planning a trip to Yosemite, the Badlands and the Dakotas when their oldest son turns 18. “We joke that we’ll have Robbie drive out with the boys and pick us up at the St. Louis airport,” says Heather. When Robert, who was raised in Kenhorst and is a Governor Mifflin graduate, was 20, he drove “from Key West to the top of Maine.” That trip, he says, provided him with a perspective of the vastness of America that he worries his boys have not experienced flying over the land at 37,000 feet. “You think of the distance between the Orlando and Philadelphia airports as maybe

an hour and a half,” he says. “But when you drive it, it helps you appreciate the real distance and the time to get there.” “I saw Oprah quoted, maybe it was in her magazine, that once a year, you should go to someplace you’ve never been,” says Heather. “It could be five minutes down the road or many miles down the road.” While Robert wouldn’t mind any of his sons following in the family construction business as he did, he is always hopeful that the family’s travels go far toward showing what lays beyond Berks County’s borders. “They’ve grown up in the construction business from playing in the sandbox to driving vehicles,” he says. “You can do it in any city or any country.” Robert looks forward to the many new locales the Sprinter will take his family. The nearly 10,000 miles logged in the first three months of owning it bodes well for its future use. “From a value standpoint, this has been our best buy,” he says. “We’re not the camping or glamping kind of people that might regret buying a full-size RV.” “We had boats in the past,” says Heather, “and we don’t have one now. The cleaning and maintenance were too time consuming.” With the venerable Tom Masano Mercedes dealership nearby in southwest Reading, the Sprinter’s comprehensive warranty, and the need for oil changes only every 20,000 miles, this maintenance is a relative breeze, the couple says. “There’s not one ounce of regret [in making this purchase] with the frequency of its use,” says Robert. “When you start organizing your life around it, you know you made the right decision.” 

Located less than a minute from Route 222, just off the Route 183 exit, this unassuming diamond in the rough is a warm, welcoming, downto-earth destination for meals to please everyone — solo diners, couples and families alike.

Specialty Starters and Salads

One of Van Reed’s most popular appetizers is the Dozen Steamed Shrimp, a peel-and-eat dish with luscious light-pink shrimp steamed in Yuengling Lager. It’s hard to imagine how such a simple plate of seafood could be so darned addictive from bite one, but you’ll quickly understand why this is a customer favorite. Unlike the average shrimp cocktail, this

starter arrives warm and juicy and ready to dig in. The shrimp are super fresh, expertly prepared to perfect texture, and downright delicious. You can smell the Yuengling aroma wafting upward. Other superb appetizers include Coconut Shrimp Fritters, which are first breaded in coconut and panko crumbs, then fried and served with a chili sauce for a sweet finish. German Soft Pretzel Bites with cheese sauce and mustard are always fun too, as are Fried Pickle Slices — straightforward fare meant to please, good with beer or a cocktail. Salad lovers may well decide to make salad their main dish. The Brisket Bleu not only delivers tomatoes, red onions and crumbly bleu cheese, but also their signature home-smoked brisket for a mouthwatering protein punch. Then again, seafood lovers adore The Surf Salad, which colorfully tops a bed of greens with red cabbage, tomatoes and carrots, plus your choice of crab cake, coconut shrimp or mahi mahi.

MAC AND CHEESE

Wings to Remember — Loyal and True

Van Reed Inn’s award-winning chicken wings are no joke. They’re served bone-in or boneless, depending on your preference, and taste exactly like they’re out of a campfire with that gentle smoky heat, so tender and meaty — a true treat. Here are just a few of the sauces you can elect to dip them in, in addition to the usual mild and hot: Van Reed Herb and Spice, BBQ, Apple Vinegar BBQ, Sweet Chili, Spicy Garlic, Honey Mustard and Honey Tequila BBQ. Whether you favor tangy and sweet or burn-your-mouth-happy, these wings will capture your heart and satisfy your stomach. Naturally, some of the regulars head here for the amazing burgers, cheesesteaks, hot dogs and sandwiches. The Brisket Reuben is stuffed with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing on thick, grilled rye bread, while the Pittsburgher is created just as western-PA tradition demands: Cheddar cheese, coleslaw, French fries on top! Or perhaps you’re feeling in a shore mood? The Chesapeake Burger marries up surf and turf, with a homemade crab cake set atop a burger along with lettuce, tomato and Baja sauce.

Hearty Eats: BBQ Platter & Mac and Cheese

Decisions, decisions! So hard to choose. To make it easier, Chef has cleverly assembled several of his great smokies all on one fabulous BBQ Platter containing generous portions of pulled pork slashes all slathered up with BBQ sauce, pieces of slow-smoked brisket, four smoked chicken wings and zingy beans. The latter are made using Great White Northerns, unrivalled in their sweet-yetzingy, thoroughly smoky, memorable taste. These really crank up the heat, so don’t be surprised when your eyes water (in a very good way). What a

nice change from the usual baked beans! These are large and healthy, smooth on the tongue, full of delicate texture. Order some French fries for taters, cut and prepped with their skins still on, for extra flavor and nutritious fiber — a super rendition of an all-American side. Every bit as tempting is Homemade Mac and Cheese, a nostalgic entrée choice to be sure. Generous, smooth cheese clings mightily to the large, whirling, corkscrew-style pasta for a satisfying chewy feel. Nicely countering such richness is homemade, lightly vinegared coleslaw comprised mainly of red and white cabbage strips — at once refreshing and crunchy. Or you can opt for applesauce instead. What’s really nice is a long list of add-in choices with which to enhance and personalize your Mac and Cheese platter. Pick one of these to have it swirled into your creamy pasta: crab cake, pulled pork, Philly cheesesteak, Buffalo chicken or Southwest chicken. There’s a separate Kids’ Menu, too, guaranteed to please. 
