I particularly love the hot Himalayan Stone massages at The Salt Lounge in Wyomissing, followed by a nap in the salt room.” – Nikki M. AROUND TOWN BERKS BITS

Get Ready to Get Jazzy The 31st Annual Berks Jazz Fest kicks off April 1 and runs for 10 days. Here’s a taste of what fans can look to enjoy this year…

FirstEnergy Stadium Tackles $16.5 Project

The next time you head out to watch your Reading Fightins, FirstEnergy Stadium may look a bit different thanks to a $16.5 million improvement project. In December of 2021, the Commonwealth dedicated $7.5 million toward the effort that will see the renovation of several areas and will add a building located in right-center field that will host player clubhouses, field manager and coach offices, a female locker room, training rooms, player dining areas with a kitchen, batting tunnels, bullpens, a weight room and supporting areas for both the R-Phils and visiting teams. When not used by the team, the spaces will be able to be utilized by organizations, businesses and individuals looking to host events at the stadium yearround. Says General Manager Scott Hunsicker, “We are excited for the future of FirstEnergy Stadium, as we continue to work hard to ensure that America’s Classic Ballpark remains a family-friendly show piece for our Baseballtown Region and something that we all can be very proud of.” – NIKKI M. MURRY

1A Traditional . Opening. Addressing Mental Health Needs

From its name, you may not understand the mission of Clear Water Wellness in Wyomissing. Opened in 2017 by Renee Stoudt and Toni Ray after working in the mental health field for years and identifying significant barriers to treatment, the pair aimed to create an environment that was different. Says Toni, “We wanted people to get the support they need and deserve.” At Clear Water Wellness the culture is welcoming and comfortable. There are specially trained therapists committed to tailoring a therapeutic experience just for you. Clients include children, adolescents and adults, and individual and group therapy are both offered in a variety of specialties, including dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, trauma informed care and even art therapy. When walking through the door, you may be greeted with a wagging tail and a wet nose courtesy of Latte, the star of the animal assisted therapy program. And another assistant is in training. Learn more at cwwellness.com or visit @ClearWaterWellnessLLC on Facebook. – NIKKI M. MURRY

It will all begin with the Harold B. Leifer Memorial Luncheon at the Peanut Bar Restaurant in downtown Reading featuring The Groovemasters with bassist Bennie Sims, keyboardist Cliff Starkey and saxophonist/vocalist Erich Cawalla.

2Big.Names.

Headliners will include the likes of Wynton Marsalis, David Sanborn, Brian Culbertson, Najee, Bela Fleck and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro.

3.

Ladies’ Night. On April 9, the

DoubleTree by Hilton Reading will play host to “Celebrating Women in Jazz” featuring iconic vocalists Patti Austin and Maysa Leak. Both ladies are known worldwide for their brilliant vocals. For more info visit berksjazzfest.com.

Prioritizing Animal Lives

Opened last July, Humane Pennsylvania’s Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving in Reading has been years in the making. Built on the old Humane Society of Berks County site, the former facility was long overdue for a re-do of sorts. The Center is home to pet adoptions, stray pet housing and pet owner support programs, including the nationally one-of-a-kind Healthy Pets Walk-In Clinic, a quick and affordable means of providing veterinary care for pets and their owners. The focus is on keeping pets happy and healthy at home, rather than waiting for situations to become dire and having animals surrendered to the shelter environment. If you’d consider an animal a household companion, it’s probably served at the Center. While cats and dogs most commonly receive aid, rabbits, birds, reptiles and even fish are welcomed. Want to learn more or stop by to visit? Find the Center at 1801 N. 11th St., Reading; call 610.921.2348 or visit humanepa.org. – NIKKI M. MURRY

AROUND TOWN

All Aboard the T.R.A.I.N. Station BY KELLY TANGER

FROM KNITTING MILL TO TRAINING FACILITY

Set in one of the original nostalgic knitting mills in Reading, which at one time was home to a train terminal in its early years, lies the T.R.A.I.N. Station. The athletic training facility opened Jan. 1, 2021 and its name reflects both Reading’s train and locomotive history as well the fitness training offered on site. The interior boasts a rustic industrial feel, showing off the Mill’s original exposed brick wall encased and intact, while also maintaining a comfortable climate for clients working out. Four individual heaters and air conditioners installed on the roof ensure all temperature and moisture levels are well controlled throughout the entire structure.

ALL ABOARD!

The T.R.A.I.N. Station, which stands for Train, Regenerate, Adapt, Inspire and Nourish, embodies four separate fitness entities, each maintaining its own set of membership fees but all living under one roof with shared spaces such as restrooms and locker rooms. This unique collaboration of fitness facilities includes the IM ABLE Foundation, Crossfit Crossing (formerly Corps Fitness) and Berks Elite Training, all occupying a shared 7,000-square-foot space encompassing an outdoor training facility and CrossFit jungle gym, called Pag’s House, in honor of late police officer Kyle Pagerly. Phoenix Allstars, also part of the collaboration, occupies a separate, private 5,000-square-foot space. Berks Elite Training and T.R.A.I.N. Station building owner Pete Rowley says, “We were looking for a mutually beneficial relationship with those groups where we

could all lease space, pay less than what we’d leased before in the market, reduce overhead and allow us to train more people and affect more lives.” As the County’s leader in sports performance training, T.R.A.I.N. is undoubtedly impacting the lives of many. Rowley explains, “We are completely inclusive, and that’s both from our adaptive community to our able-bodied community.” Who will you find training and working out at the T.R.A.I.N. Station? Everyone from serious, competitive cross-fitters and athletes to adaptive athletes, including both children and adults with physical or mental disabilities to high school students whose dream is to make the varsity team. Each of these training entities focuses on its own particular area while helping every athlete achieve their goals. The IM ABLE Foundation works solely with adaptive athletes, including personal training and the IM FIT group fitness program. This program runs for eight weeks and provides encouragement and support to individuals with physical or mental challenges to grow and enhance their comfortability with exercise at any skill level. Crossfit Crossing trains CrossFit athletes, from kids to adults. Berks Elite Training works with scholastic athletes, providing personal training, small group and team training; the staff is made up of highly trained professionals including a few former collegiate and professional athletes. Last, but certainly not least, is Phoenix AllStars, consisting of a team that works with cheerleaders and tumbling clients from youth to adult. With such an amazing group of talents brought together under one roof, Rowley says, “The coolest part about this collaboration is you have four businesses that are like-minded in terms of we want to help people through the vehicle of fitness, and we want to serve our community.” He continues, “At our core, we just want to be a part of the fabric of this community and help grow it.” FUN FACTS

A Piece of History. The tracks at

the once-operable train terminal inside the Knitting Mills are still visible today, making the T.R.A.I.N. Station building an even more unique fitness experience.

Purposeful Architecture. The

100-year-old renovated building still displays some remnants of its historic origins such as the exposed interior brick wall.

AROUND TOWN IN THE LIMELIGHT Now you’re with the Reading Education Foundation. What is the goal of the Foundation? We began planning the Foundation just before the pandemic, and then everything was on hold until later in 2020. The goal of the Foundation is to fund innovative teaching and learning initiatives and to develop our staff and faculty to be innovative educators. Too often school funding and faculty and staff time are tied up with essential business, and there isn’t much time or money for enrichment. The Foundation aims to provide grants to the district, individual teachers and community partners to provide those enrichment opportunities for students. Can you give us an example of a program the Foundation funded? Although the pandemic delayed our work, we were still able to work with FirstEnergy Stadium on two fundraisers; one has allowed 20 students to attend Albright College’s Science Institute, and the other will help with a manufacturing program at Southern Middle School.

IN THE LIMELIGHT WITH

Gordon Hoodak

Executive Director, Reading Education Foundation BY CHRISTINA J. STEFFY | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS

Gordon Hoodak spent nearly half a century supporting students, faculty and staff of the Reading School District (RSD). He was a teacher for 10 years and the principal of Lauer’s Park Elementary School for 37 years. Now, he is supporting the district through the Reading Education Foundation. Why did you choose to spend your career at RSD? I attended Penn State University for health and physical education. My goal was to become a physical therapist, but all education majors must student-teach. My teaching assignment was at RSD. I didn’t think I would like teaching, but I absolutely loved it. I couldn’t believe how much fun it was. When the semester was over, I didn’t want to leave. I was offered a teaching job at Reading and two other school districts, and I chose Reading. My first job in the district was as a physical education teacher at the former Fifth and Spring Elementary School. The kindness and camaraderie were amazing, and I’ve never left the district. 10

MARCH 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

You’re very passionate about your work, and you have a very positive attitude. I have a sign in my office that I’ve had throughout my career: “It is what it is, but it becomes what you make it.” I know people who always see the glass as half empty, but I always see the opportunity in the challenges. You can get frustrated, but then take a step back, work on changing the bad things and realize they make you stronger. I take this attitude into my work with the Foundation. I’ve seen the good times and the challenges in the District, and they’ve made me stronger, and this motivates me. When you have free time, how do you relax? I don’t often slow down and take time to relax, but when I do, I love being outside. I take a walk daily, and I enjoy gardening and landscaping. And I love spending time with my grandkids.

LEARN MORE Alumni Roots. The Foundation’s 18-member board includes 17 RSD alumni and one member who is married to an RSD alum.

Ambitious Goals. The Foundation board aims to have a $5 million endowment in the next 10 years to support innovative enrichment programs.

Relax and bask in the joy of glowing, healthy skin. Whether you’re looking to exfoliate, hydrate or deep clean, there’s a facial tailored to your needs. Take a break from your busy schedule and give your face some extra care and attention. Revitalize your skin with these five facial treatments.

1 Chocolate Bliss. Rejuvenate your skin with the power of chocolate. Natural antioxidants from raw cocoa nourish and protect skin, stimulate healing and delight your senses. Papaya and pineapple delicately exfoliate and polish your skin. To complete the facial, an effervescent oxygen treatment increases circulation, reduces redness and leaves skin hydrated and energized. 2 Get Glowing.

Treat yourself to oh-so-smooth skin. Dermaplaning removes dead skin cells and fine Vellus hairs (aka “peach fuzz”) and diminishes fine lines and scars. Fabulous on its own, dermaplaning can be paired with other treatments, masks or peels. Afterwards, your favorite face products will penetrate deeper into refreshed, hydrated skin. Dermaplaning, $70, $45 if added to a facial, The Loft Med Spa at Lisa’s, 220 N. Park Rd., Bldg. 8B, Wyomissing, 610.478.8775. lisassalonspa.com

Microdermabrasion Facial, $145, The Bell Tower Salon Spa, 18 State Hill Rd., Wyomissing, 610.372.6379. belltowersalonspa.com

4 Improve Tone and Texture.

Even out your skin tone and reduce the appearance of scars and hyperpigmentation. Chemical peels utilize the application of non-acids and acids to the skin. just THE RETURN OF ROLLER SKATING B Y C O U R T N E Y E LL P H O TO S BY C A R R IE K IZ U KA P H O T O G R A P HY

MARCH 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

1863 saw the world’s first four-wheeled “quad skate,” and it’s been rolling in and out of the public eye ever since. Today, the masses applaud social media for resurrecting roller skating as a once-dead recreational sport. Truth be told, Berks has been ahead of the curve all along, and it’s showing no sign of putting its toe stop down to brake any time soon. With its variety of beloved rinks, skate park enthusiasts, derby skaters, freestylers and artistic skaters alike; Berks’ tenacious and devoted local skate community hasn’t skipped a beat, and it certainly never lost its cool. Tighten up those laces, skaters; Reading Skatepark Association has been hard at work, and city officials have even reported that Reading is expecting a new cutting-edge skate park of its very own!

Oh, My Quad!

Has your mind darted to roller disco, polyester and the lemonade stands of your youth? What about Farrah Fawcett's feathered bouffant or Olivia Newton John grooving through Xanadu? Don’t worry. No itchy polyester crop-tops or corduroy cut-offs are required to get you to strutting, though safety gear is encouraged.

Come

Skate with Us!

Tanara Govern (“Helen Darink” “hell-in-da-rink”)

Believe it or not, a nervous grin or shy wave can gain you access into one of the most en vogue clubs around. A far cry from Mean Girls’ snarky “You can’t sit with us,” today’s breed of roller skater is approachable, diverse and can be seen sporting cheery hoodies emblazoned with ‘Come Skate With Us!’ Berks’ skating community “is welcoming to all people,” says Kristy Brown, 43, of Reiffton. “(It’s) so inclusive. You’ll find people of all genders, races, sizes, ages and orientations in the roller skating community.” Amy Kline, 33, of West Lawn chimes in, “When I first started skating, I could barely stand up on skates; everyone I met was super helpful and encouraging when it came to learning how to skate. They’re some of the most supportive and encouraging people I’ve had the pleasure to meet.” “Within the skating community, everyone is equal and has the freedom to express themselves. It allowed me to know the determination and courage to always fight to be the best I could be,” beams Jay-Lyn Feliciano, 19, of Reading. This community “is also the best humanity I have ever experienced. It’s a welcoming group that pushes you to be the best and allows you to be whoever you want to be.”

Park Stars

Kristy Brown (“Starbuck”)

and Derby Dames

Park skating and roller derby may appear as mere mayhem, but quirky camaraderie is where it’s at. This hyped-up whirl of endorphins offers the cheeky catharsis we could all use. Speaking of cheeky, roller skating is good for your brain AND your bootie. “I’ve always found the gym to be so boring,” says Kristy. “It’s not just skating around a rink. There’s derby, jam skating, speedskating, trail skating, park skating — there’s something for everyone!” Roller skating offers low-impact, fun and dynamic workouts. “I feel powerful when I’m on my skates,” Jen Beebe, 37, of Temple shares. “I don’t like walking, jogging or running, but I love to get miles in on my skates. I feel dead tired, but so alive afterward; it’s fabulous.” “It gives me my sense of self and a way to exercise while having fun!” says Tanara Govern, 50, of Lenhartsville. “My favorite thing about my skating community is the inclusion of everyone. The local rinks that I go to in Berks County are always filled with a mixed crowd of young and old.”

Rink Rats to

Royalty Rick Smith, 73, of Douglassville, a towering man of few words and a self-proclaimed loner, began roller skating at age 15. Like any sensible young man, he figured the roller rink was a prime scene to meet girls. Much to his surprise, he was good — multiple-time national champion good! While racking up titles in the rink, he remained a lone wolf, only discovering the warmth of the skating community when paired with his spry new skating partner and now bride-to-be, Kathy Tini, also of Douglassville. “When we first started skating together as a team, he never even spoke to me when I went into the rink! On the floor, however,” Kathy swoons, “the chemistry was amazing.” At 63 years, she met her skating partner and life partner. They competed together until retiring from competition in 2017, continuing to teach throughout their competitive years. Kathy was invited to Shillington’s Skateaway, starting the artistic skating club. Teaching on skates three days a week, she is now 75 and proudly proclaims, “I’m still hell on wheels!” “The beauty of skating at any age is the freedom it gives you; the timeout when nothing matters. I’ve loved the camaraderie skating has afforded me in my later years. I’ve met so many skaters from around the world, and we all have our story — our love of the freedom you feel.” As for roller skating’s uptick in popularity, Kathy wishes, “We’re hoping the popularity continues for a sport we’ve given our best years to!”

Staying

GOLD Consider the baton successfully passed to the younger generation by way of all-star artistic roller skater Alivia Spitz, 15, from Exeter Township. Bursting into her competitive roller skating journey at Berks’ own Fantasy Skating Center at just 9 years old, Alivia was smitten. Shortly thereafter, she set her sights on winning a medal with Team USA. 2021 brought her National Championship medals and, this year, she’s skating in the Junior World class division. “Every time I step on the rink, I feel a sense of determination to reach those goals. When I’m feeling stressed with school or with friends, I use skating as an outlet, and the rink is a safe place for me.” Alivia’s love of skating goes far beyond the rink, acting as her finely tuned compass. “I get to do something I love. I experience many things, good and bad, all of which will help me navigate my future. Overall, skating is my ‘happy place’ and pushes me to be the best person I can be.” That is most certainly a win.

Turnberry Construction Group For most of his life, Kevin Kozo has been building something. It started when he was a boy, on weekends when his mom had to work. His dad would take Kevin and his brother to rental units they owned and teach them things like how to hang drywall or run electric. It was the beginning of something. And eventually, it evolved into his career. Each step along the way, Kevin has gained more experience and knowledge about how to build things better, at a higher standard and with integrity. In 2005, he started Turnberry Construction Group, and he’s built it into a top residential and commercial building company specializing in both new construction and renovation. From beautiful custom homes in the sprawling hills of Bernville to an executive apartment/commercial property on Penn Avenue in West Reading, Turnberry has a reputation for building all things with excellence. Impeccable design, attention to detail and customer satisfaction are always the heart of every project. “I love seeing things come to life and giving space a new purpose. Building people’s dream home or helping a business expand, it’s very rewarding. I am a vested part of every project and every detail. I wouldn’t do it any other way,” says Kevin. Spoonies Meet the

of Berks County

BY C OU RTNEY ELL

BLOGGER CHRISTINE MISERANDINO (butyoudontlooksick.com) coined The Spoon Theory in her 2003 explanation of how Lupus impacts her daily life. She used a handful of spoons— each spoon representing a portion of energy — to more tangibly explain how she scrupulously rations out her finite allotment of daily physical capacity. Soon after, a world of chronic illness warriors felt more clearly seen, heard and not so alone. Taking on the cozy “Spoonie” moniker as their own, they began using spoons to not only share their experiences with those in their immediate circles, but they also fueled a supportive local and global online community and an ever-growing menagerie of hashtags like #spooniestrong, #spooniewarrior, #spoonielife and #spooniesupport. With an endless variety of local and virtual meet-ups, tips for symptom management, Pen Pals and countless health resources, it’s also free of the unnecessary pressure to prove oneself, a common and exhausting burden of those with a chronic illness or invisible disability. Of note, the Spoonies’ meme game is on point, with shared relatable humor and a friendly helping of fellow Spoonies’ uplifting, cute pet photos when they’re needed most.

M

Most healthy people have about the same amount of energy (same spoon count) each day, and healthy individuals begin their day with more spoons (more energy) than those suffering from the fatigue of chronic illness. Certain tasks and everyday necessities can cost more than one spoon. Healthy individuals have the luxury of not consciously precalculating and recalculating every moment of their day. 30

MARCH 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

A vast majority of people don’t give a great deal of thought to the energy they’ll have exerted when they hop out of bed and into their morning shower. After belting out the latest Bruno Mars single, they get dressed, scarf down their breakfast and make their way to work, school or whatever other engagements they have planned for their day. Most individuals usually are capable of keeping a majority of the plans they make, too. Those

pushing through chronic illness or invisible disabilities are not most individuals. The average person doesn’t wake to the dread that brushing their teeth or putting on a fresh set of clothes will put them back in bed due to the physical toll those seemingly minor tasks take. If you’re a Spoonie, the energy to shower AND shave in one go may be a luxury. God forbid you also want to style your hair when your joints won’t allow you to raise

your arms past your elbows or you select a shirt with a row of tricky buttons to contend with. For most, getting ready in the morning and heading to work is bundled into a tidy and predictable amount of time, and off they go. Most days, a Spoonie is depleted before they have even gotten to the heart of their day. For those able to work, their spoons are often long gone before attempting to accommodate family time, social outings, dinner or even relaxing.

Coping with Compassion

When Ryan M. was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (an autoimmune disorder causing nerve damage by one’s own immune system, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis), he was greeted with more than the expected overwhelm of his new diagnosis. He was warmly welcomed by a remarkable community. Like many individuals with a chronic illness or invisible disability, this Leesport native found a hearty dose of solace and much-needed comradery in the Spoonie community and, believe it or not, reason to celebrate. When Ryan initially received his diagnosis, the last thing he

energy-saving life hacks. Best of all, he was introduced to a welcoming community of people he didn’t have to explain things to because they already understood. “It really helps me to not feel so alone in all this. I know I’m not the only one. That’s why I always do what I can to invest back into our local Spoonie community — even if it’s just time or a friendly word. Things aren’t all sunshine and roses. I’m not going to say anything to the contrary, but within the Spoonies, I don’t have to be dripping in positivity. Instead, we talk about the ugly facts of life head-on together, with compassion. I know I needed that in my darkest times; I don’t want anyone else to ever feel like life’s not worth it. None of us are alone — at least we don’t have to be, not really.”

reliable. I’m like a poorly crafted scarecrow; my limbs and organs refuse to stay in their proper place.” Frequent hypermobility complications can occur spontaneously; acutely painful, they cause chronic trauma to her body, inside and out.

Replacing Pace with Grace

With only two months remaining in Jillian’s nursing residency, her symptoms escalated significantly. After eight years of testing, she always believed that, once the doctors found the root cause for her frequent fatigue and debilitating pain, the next step was the cure. “Always a silverlining person, I was so thrilled when the doctor told me she knew

Something as simple as a spoon can be a great middleman.” Spoonie families often find it to be a helpful tool in bridging the gap toward better understanding with friends and loved ones. “I’ve learned that I’m not being selfish or high-maintenance when I set harder boundaries or have to bow out of another girls’ night.” Selfadvocacy is not about selfishness; it’s about being proactive and a good steward of oneself. “My physical and emotional wellbeing matters, and honestly, I’ve learned that I have to soften my expectations and not be so hard on myself.” Jillian shares that chronic illness can often run a person the risk of becoming a “chronic apology giver. Saying I’m sorry implies that I’ve done

“My physical and emotional well-being matters, and honestly, I’ve learned that I have to soften my expectations and not be so hard on myself.” wanted to do was make a toast, but when he looks back on that day, he confesses with a shrug that he’s “ready to throw out the red carpet and fireworks. Sure, I’m human and can complain with the best of them.” But, one day, after leaving another arduous day of testing at the clinic, “I went out to my car, white-knuckled my steering wheel and screamed. After that? I cried — one of those ugly cries, you know? I just sat there — felt like hours. Eventually, I sort of just refused to feel sorry for myself. I was done being sad and angry. I was over it and so tired of that being my life for so many years.” He didn’t know how he was going to do it, but laughing, he shares, “I figured Google wasn’t the worst place to start.” Before he knew it, Ryan was flooded with encouragement, an emerging strength in self-advocacy, new treatment resources and

Humor Helps

Toting a Mary Poppins-sized handbag, Jillian K. announces its contents as her “very own walking pharmacy.” Balancing on her rainbow sticker-decked walking cane against her chair and slowly lowering herself down with a wry smile, she points to her very black T-shirt that reads: ‘When I’m in pain, my shirt turns black.’ This Lorane resident was diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder effecting the collagen production and connective tissue throughout her body, skin and internal organs. “My sweet husband dubbed me Lady Scarecrow. See, the glue that holds a human body and all its contents together and in place — my bones, organs, tendons, digestive system, blood vessels…” taking a deep breath, Jillian explains, “Mine’s not

what was wrong. Finally, we’d put a stop to this plaguing pain and what felt like — well, it sounds awful, but…to me, it felt like a waste of living.” “I had disappeared from my own life. It had been so long, and so many people were telling me it was all in my head — even some doctors. They’d say to take some aspirin; push through. I was dead-tired every day, but I still couldn’t sleep through the night ever. I was in so much pain, even with medication after medication. When they told me there was no cure, my world was upside-down. My life purpose, my passion — who was I? I couldn’t even vent to anyone who would really get it.”

Kindness and Candor “It can be difficult to explain to your 6-year-old something that most adults can’t grasp, huh?

something wrong; I didn’t choose to be sick.” Jillian learned to replace her guilt with gratitude. Finding understanding in genuine Spoonie friendships helped her build up the nerve to breech conversations she was once too scared to have. “By practicing healthier dialogues, I’ve built stronger relationships and a better understanding amongst my family and friends. It’s a blessing. Living with illness and disability is hard. I’m forced every moment of every day to choose exactly how I spend my limited time and energy. How can I not be grateful? There are so many people in the world who waste so much of their life without even thinking. I know I don’t have that luxury, but I also know I haven’t wasted the life I’ve been given. That’s a blessing and so is this incredible community.” berkscountyliving.com | MARCH 2022

ou’re looking out at the meadow, and you’re sweating up a storm. The birds are chirping, there are a few goats gavotting nearby, and sunlight and shadows play tag on the fieldstone walls. The person in question might very well be a local farmer or gardener hard at work, laboring on a mild late-winter day for the growing season soon to start. But in this case, the subject is a thirtysomething entrepreneur and mom of two young daughters who is working out a storm 32

early in the morning in her Lower Heidelberg Township home gym. Amanda Henn and her husband Nick made the decision to reassign space in what had originally been destined to be a bar area. That change of heart was, in fact, a change for their heart health and their overall wellbeing: an in-home gym. “We wanted the room to be used more than once a year when we had a big party,” says Amanda, an owner of The Mint Leaf boutique retail barn in Bern Township. “Now, we each use it at least once a day.”

TAKING SPACE

The gym constitutes half of the basement area in the spacious and airy residence the couple built in 2016 on the site of an old chicken farm. Nick’s dad, a homebuilder, acquired the property, subdivided it, and the couple purchased one of the lots. The couple “share” the basement with the playroom of their daughters Aria, 6, and Atley, 3. Like many of their generation, Amanda, 32, and Nick, 34, belonged to local gyms. But with marriage, parenthood and the demands of their businesses (Nick is the owner and vice

The Henns divided their basement space in two. Off the stairs to the left is the girls’ playroom complete with television, small trampoline, some small weights and their very own pint-sized Fisher-Price exercise bike, which can be outfitted with a tablet for games that encourage age-appropriate workouts. Amanda attached a sticker with the Peloton name to make the bike seem more like the adult version. A big soft pink Lovesac (bean-bag type chair) is just right for cuddling and napping when the girls get played out. Glass doors on a metal barn door slider, which Nick acquired via Amazon, technically separate the spaces. But, in truth, they are rarely closed.

GREETING EACH DAY

The gym boasts a large window overlooking a meadow. Perched on the Peloton bike adjacent to it, Amanda can enjoy the first rays of sun and nature awakening. Amanda wakens early each day – at 5:30am – to get her workout in while the rest of the family sleeps. In an hour, she trains on the bike, the treadmill and the newest addition to the home gym – a Tonal. Clearly, the gym equipment is a significant monetary outlay for the family. A Peloton bike can be $1,500 or more with a $30 per month training fee. The cost of a Peloton treadmill can reach $4,000 with a $39 per month training fee. And the Tonal personal gym comes in at around $3,000 with a $50 to $60 monthly training fee.

“There’s no question that this is an investment,” says Amanda. “Peloton makes it affordable with a payment plan and zero percent interest for three years. “But, more importantly, it’s my health that I’m investing in, helping to ensure that I’ll be here for them (her daughters and husband) for a long time. You can’t put a price on that. Your health should be your biggest investment.” Though Amanda may be by herself while working out, she is not alone. Trainers and classes – live or on demand – are with her every step and move of the way. There are 14 live cycling classes daily and more than 10,000 on-demand instructor-led indoor cycling classes from which to choose. Yoga content has recently been added. In many cases, her workout partners and trainers have become friends, connecting via a main Facebook page, Instagram or other social media platforms.

A VIRTUAL COMMUNITY

“Peloton has created a motivated community,” she says. “The bike takes out your anger and frustration, and it can increase your happiness,” she says. “You walk away feeling like a different person. The instructors become like family; they are ‘in your house’ every day.” Indeed, a large wooden frame behind her bike contains photos – sort of a base-ball cardlike presentation – of many trainers, all of whom also model Peloton apparel. Amanda favors the apparel and sports it as well.

president of Impact Engineering Group, Bern Township), scheduling time for the gym became a challenge for both. Initially, a convenient solution was the purchase of a Peloton bike four years ago. The bike shared closet space in their bedroom. “I hated it at first but then, after having Atley, I pushed myself and got addicted to it,” Amanda says. Still, despite the victory of shedding 30 post-delivery pounds, the joy of working out remained elusive. But, with the decision to create their home gym, all that changed. berkscountyliving.com | MARCH 2022

LIVING IN STYLE The Tonal community is smaller, she says, and can be savored in real time via chats with trainers on Instagram. The Tonal, which is mounted on a barnwood frame designed by Amanda and crafted by Nick, offers a variety of workouts including strength training, weights, resistance training, a bootcamp experience, Pilates, cardio and pre- and post-natal exercises, Amanda says. A bench, part of the equipment, has become a favorite place for the family’s two faithful cats, Piper and Isa, to keep watch on their humans’ performances. Tonal also tracks workouts; Amanda notes in 65 workouts, she lifted a total of 329,000 pounds.

TRAINERS AT THE READY

“There’s always an instructor to make sure you’re doing things properly,” she says. “The community both Peloton and Tonal created might be mostly virtual, but it’s beyond that. I can’t tell you how many conversations I have about it when I meet people. If they have a shirt on with Peloton or Tonal, most times it’s a conversation starter, and that community is brought out from behind the screens. The passion and hard work of the

creators of both spread, bringing people together and creating joy! I could talk about them both all day because of how much it has mentally and physically helped me.” While Amanda works out in the very early morning, Nick likes to leave work in time for a run in the rolling countryside near their home. A serious runner, he did the 2020

pandemic-impacted New York City Marathon virtually on the Peloton treadmill, a birthday gift from Amanda. Following a bit of an injury, Nick is again building his strength both outdoors and on the treadmill and is planning to participate in a half marathon this month.

“I absolutely love having a home gym, especially one that I helped design and build,” he says. “When going to a gym in the past, there were always too many excuses or reasons to not go that got in the way. However, when it is in your basement and you know that you can knock out a quick 30-minute workout without needing to spend more time to get all your things ready or to have to drive to the gym, it really makes for a more enjoyable and efficient workout. This really came to light for me last winter when I was training for the NYC half marathon. With all the snow that just wouldn’t melt, road and trail running were extremely difficult. That’s where having the home gym with my Peloton Tread really paid off as I was able to train daily and ultimately hit my goal pace and new personal record on my half marathon.”

A number of large crystals – from rock quartz to a large dog-toothed amethyst geode to jade to Caribbean calcite – are placed on the wide windowsill. Interspersed is a large section of petrified wood acquired by Nick as well as an assortment of plants nurtured by Amanda. “I’m obsessed with plants, especially the orchids and succulents,” she says. A variety of signs, many sourced from a Mint Leaf vendor, with interesting verbiage are placed throughout the gym, some on the walls, some on a set of inset shelves. Among the sayings: “Oh, My Quad,” “Turn Your Pain into Power,” “Inhale/Exhale,” “Your Only Limit is Your Mind,” and “This Isn’t a Dress Rehearsal” serve to effectively push Amanda and Nick. On the hardwood floors are two yoga mats now used with frequency. A small stand contains a variety of the couple’s sneakers. Above that is a calendar to keep everyone organized. The proximity of the gym to the girls’ playroom is not only practical; Amanda believes it is also inspirational. “They’re both starting to pick up on the health aspect (of working out),”

she says. “It’s important to model that behavior. We’re a pretty active family.” Amanda echoes Nick’s thoughts regarding an in-home gym versus a gym membership. “To me, it’s easier to walk down the steps and just start working out,” she says. “I don’t have to drive, find a parking space and fight over gym equipment. In the long run, our monthly (training) costs average a bit over $100 for both of us – competitive with gym costs.” Adhering to a schedule and, whenever possible, having a dedicated space like the Henns do are critical components for success. Amanda notes that even on days when she might not want to work out, she feels immeasurably better after she does. “This is one of my favorite places to be; this is my zone,” she says. “I just want to add for advice and something I live by…if you don’t show up for yourself and give yourself 100 percent, you can’t give your loved ones 100 percent because it all starts with how you treat yourself. You need to be at your best to give your best. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s actually quite the opposite and needed to thrive.”

DINING OUT TOFU SCRAMBLE

TOTALLY PLANT-BASED DINING AT

The Greenhouse Café BY M ARIA N FRANCES W OLBERS | PHOTOS BY HEID I REU TER

It’s

a café, coffeehouse and a haven, no, an absolute oasis, for deliciously guilt-free dishes and custom cold and hot drinks made entirely from plant foods. For vegetarians and vegans, The Greenhouse Café has already become well known in a very short time since opening in fall of 2019. As for the thousands of Berks Countians who swore on New Year’s to eat more mindfully and healthfully in 2022 — adding fiber, cutting back on daily meat intake, avoiding saturated fats and foregoing dairy — this inviting restaurant is a clear destination to trust for astonishingly tasty, wholesome, satisfying dinners, as well as lunches and breakfasts. Co-owners Uday Shah and Nikki Motichka are genial, caring chefs with clear dedication not only to plant-based foods, but fantastic flavor. They check with patrons to please their palates, tweaking culinary creations toward a more perfect eating experience. They support local suppliers and cook with ingredients in harmony with the seasons. Uday himself comes from a tradition 38

MARCH 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

of South Indian cuisine, remembering spending time in Temple City, Madurai, site of a famous 6th Century temple. “I am a lifelong vegetarian,” he says, smiling, “and I have never eaten meat.” Nikki has been a vegetarian for years and has come to embrace a vegan diet. She says many of their customers are omnivores who want to expand their lifestyle. Located next to Bell Tower Salon & Spa just off Penn Avenue, there’s never a worry about parking. The Café’s interior sports an airy, cosmopolitan atmosphere, offering exciting daily specials in addition to popular standards. They’re open most mornings through early afternoon, while Wednesdays and Fridays offer additional hours for dinner. Dishes on those nights might include entrees like dairy-free lasagna, Alfredo or couscous with roasted cashews and lemon-garlic sauce. As a way of serving the larger Berks community, the restaurant also offers order-ahead takeout for various private gatherings

or holiday events, so that all guests can enjoy a gluten-free Lentil Loaf, Baked Mac and Cheese, Roasted Garlic and Rosemary Potatoes, Red Velvet Cake and a variety of other fine foods.

GREENHOUSE SALAD

Delightful Soups; World’s Smoothest Hummus

Try the pretty, aromatic Tomato and White Bean Soup made creamy with cashew cream and devoid of any acidic aftertaste. Those soft white beans are “just right” in texture and taste, reflecting the Café’s expertise in cooking legumes from scratch. Very satisfying; quite perfect for dipping with breads. In fact, every day Nikki makes new soups for dining in or taking out, artistically mixing up the most astonishing combinations. “I make over 40 different types of soup a year,” she admits, saying she takes great joy in coming up with different seasonings for her vegetables, lentils and bean broths. Also available daily is a super, uber-fresh Hummus Plate, made from scratch, of course. The chickpea dish comes with pita triangles and is topped with Indian-spiced veggies on top, often with carrots, cauliflower and pickled cabbage slaw. “We use a very high-quality olive oil,” say Uday and Nikki, which partially explains how incredibly silkysmooth and mild, yet lovely, their hummus is. It’s a must-try dish, for sure — great for sharing as a high-protein, low-cholesterol appetizer or light meal.

GOLDEN MILK LATTE

Extraordinary Egg-less Salad Sandwich and Other Surprises More eating pleasure emerges in the Eggless Salad Sandwich, a lively, egg-textured choice enhanced by red tomato slices and curvy microgreens (lightly sweet and spicy). Likewise, The Greenhouse Café has perfected a mock tuna in its Chickpea by the Sea Sandwich, also embellished with microgreens and tomato slices on a wholesome, luscious bread. Both sandwiches come with a choice of chips or side salad. Both are crazy-good. So yummy. Caesar Salad lovers will flip over the Chik’n Caesar Salad bowl, loaded with crispy Romaine lettuce, an engaging house-made Vegan Caesar dressing and herbed croutons. Artfully arranged on top of this salad entrée is a generous portion of yummy grilled Vegan Chik’n strips. The Strata (gluten-free) is one of those really wonderful dishes that moves easily from breakfast to dinner. Attractively presented, this is a true original where the main focus on a golden, loaf-like square made of tightly knit veggies (spinach and carrots), house-made non-dairy feta,

Coffee, Chai, Smoothies and Golden Milk

Freshly made coffee with oatmilk is “the usual” here, though choices abound from almond to soy milk. Greenhouse Chai is like none other, as the highest quality ingredients make this drink 100 percent authentic. Some patrons can’t get enough of their Wild Berry and other smoothies. And expect pure magic in Golden Milk, a custom-made, warm cup containing turmeric, akin to a warm sunset that lingers in mind and heart. Last but not least by any means, The Greenhouse Café stuns with its mouthwatering baked goods: gluten-free carrot cake, classy coffeecake and ginormous bananawalnut muffins containing a whole banana in each muffin! berkscountyliving.com | MARCH 2022
