Celebrating Mom

Though we should celebrate and appreciate our mothers every day of the year, the hallmark day on which to do it falls on Mother’s Day, this year on May 14, 2023.

Did you know Mother’s Day is recognized across the globe? Here are a few ways moms are celebrated in different countries…

• India: Here mothers are acknowledged with a 10-day festival called Durga Puja. It’s thought to be both a religious ceremony and time for family reunions.

• Japan: After World War II, a version of Mother’s Day grew popular as a way to comfort mothers who lost a son in the war. In March, carnations are presented as the flowers symbolized the sweetness and endurance of motherhood in the Japanese culture. White is the traditional color.

• United Kingdom: Mothering Sunday occurs on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In the 1700s, young house servants would return home to spend time with their mothers. Today, the holiday is grounded in religion and sees many churches hand out daffodils for children to gift to their mothers. Girls also traditionally bake a fruitcake for Mom.

• Ethiopia: At the end of the rainy season occurring in early fall, The Antrosht Festival is dedicated to mothers. After the weather clears, families come together at home for a large meal and celebration. Daughters typically bring vegetables and cheese, while sons bring meat to the meal. Putting them together, a hash is prepared and they sing and dance and tell stories of family heroes.
