Prioritizing Health

Our March issue gives a nod to personal health and wellness. That comes in all forms. It’s important to be well-rounded in our health efforts, considering physical, mental and emotional aspects equally.

On page 23 we remind you of the ABCs of health. It’s not to overwhelm you, rather to serve as a reminder that there is a little piece of the wellness puzzle you can tackle each day, bit by bit. It’s all about effort and making conscious choices.

A big topic in the nutrition field of late is gut health and how it can impact our bodies as a whole. Learn more about what a local expert has to say on the subject on page 37.

To that end, what we choose to put in our body is important and Berks County has some great options for delicious, clean eats! We bring you three of them in our Dining Out article on page 50. We hope you’ll give them a try and tell them we sent you!

Need a bit of inspiration to get your body moving? Unsure what workout routine is the best fit for you? You might find some answers in our Living In Style feature on page 40. Berks resident and personal trainer Stephanie Grace shares her journey with fitness and gives a look inside her home gym in Douglassville.

Keeping the Kids PLAYING THE GAME

From having a background in figure skating due to being an instructor for the past 20 years and being a former skater herself, it’s clear that Alyssa Henderson has a strong passion for the craft. From what started with Alyssa selling gently used equipment from her house, Hometown Skates was able to expand to a new location in Leesport due to its overwhelming popularity with the skating community. There, Alyssa’s spirit shines through in how she approaches business. “Being able to help people place their no-longer-used items with people that were going to use them gave back to the people that worked with me in skating, and ultimately, it really helped keep people in the sport,” Alyssa says. To combat skyrocketing prices and corporate environments, Hometown Skates offers figure skating and hockey equipment at a reasonable price. Olivia Shaffer’s vision for her brand, Liv Holistic, was born in 2021 when she started posting content about non-toxic, DIY products that people could make at home. Since its inception, Liv Holistic has been dedicated to showing people how switching to a healthy, non-toxic lifestyle can be both simple and affordable. “I feel like a lot of people say they feel overwhelmed with making the swap to clean products because they don’t know where to start,” Olivia says. “I find it fun to do the research on all the clean brands and products, and then I share what I learn to make that transition to clean products simple for people.” In a welcoming approach to holistic living, Liv Holistic encourages the accessibility of everyday essentials that are high quality, safe and clean. FEMALE-FORWARD Family Legacy

Coming from the family that formerly owned Queen City Family Restaurant, Sabrena Elmarzouky grew up in the industry. Since the restaurant closed, Sabrena realized how much she missed interacting with people and being community oriented. So, Elmarzouky decided to follow her dream of opening a small, local café that pays homage to her family’s legacy that her dad started 31 years ago. Thus, Queens’ Café was created. The apostrophe at the end of “Queens’” is no mistake, Sabrena says. “What was really important to me is that I come from a long line of strong women, and all of the girls in my family have been involved in the restaurant business at one point or another. That’s where it comes from; it’s to be very inclusive and mindful of including all women from different walks of life.” Merging familial ties with feminism, Queens’ Café proves that dreams really do come true. FEEDING HOPE: Humane Pennsylvania’s SPIKE’S PET FOOD PANTRY PROGRAM

When families face financial hardship, the ripple effects often touch every member of the household, including their four-legged companions. Recognizing the critical role pets play as cherished family members, Humane Pennsylvania’s Spike’s Pet Food Pantry Program has emerged as a lifeline.

Karel Minor, CEO of Humane Pennsylvania, recalled the program’s early days. “We started doing our pantry work in late 2004 or early 2005. We were seeing animals coming into shelters not because their owners didn’t care but because they couldn’t afford to keep them,” says Minor.

By asking a simple yet transformative question — “What do you need to keep your pet at home?” — the organization, which operates out of the Community Resource Center in Reading, quickly identified the gaps that often led to surrender. In many cases, the solution was as straightforward as providing a bag of dog food. What began as an informal effort grew into a full-fledged program by 2007, a trailblazing model in the industry at the time.

mission statement now because we recognize that animals can’t feed themselves. We need to make sure that people are capable, and if they don’t know how to be, we teach them. If they know but don’t have access, we give them access. And if they ultimately can’t keep an animal, then we’re here for that animal. But we don’t start the conversation with, ‘When would you like to bring it to our shelter?’ We start conversations with, ‘What do you need to keep it from coming to our shelter?’”

AROUND TOWN

While the one-million-pound goal was reached this past year, Humane Pennsylvania is also tackling systemic challenges beyond food with initiatives like low-cost veterinary services and community education.

“When we started, Berks and Lancaster counties were taking in nearly 30,000 animals a year. Now that number is under 3,000,” says Minor.

This remarkable reduction is attributed to proactive programs that address the root causes of surrender, from spay/neuter services to access to affordable care. The organization also encourages community involvement through volunteering, donations and initiatives like the soon-to-belaunched Thrifty Kitty thrift boutique in Lancaster.

“It was uncommon and even controversial,” says Minor. “We heard criticism like, ‘Why support people who can’t afford pets?’ But we knew the alternative of animals dying in shelters and people losing their pets was unacceptable.”

Today, Spike’s Pet Food Pantry stands as a testament to the power of empathy and innovation. The program has distributed more than 241,979 pounds of food, equating to nearly one million meals for pets in need.

“Pets are part of the family,” Minor emphasizes. “No child or adult should have to lose their pet simply because of temporary financial difficulties. Our mission is to empower people to care for their animals, not take them away.”

The program’s evolution includes thoughtful touches to encourage participation. Clients receive a member card, making the experience feel like shopping at a wholesale club. In addition, there are free and low-cost options so that residents can apply for membership regardless of economic status.

“Many of the previous programs were a little chiding. We’re not engaging in that,” says Minor. “People come before animals in our

Looking ahead, Minor envisions even greater milestones, including expanding the pantry’s reach and potentially tackling the ambitious goal of distributing over one million pounds of pet food annually. “It sounds daunting, but it’s achievable,” he says. “As more people understand the importance of these services, the support grows.”

Tish Davis

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF BERKS ARTS

After 32 years of working at R.M. Palmer, Tish Davis took a leap of faith. Over time, her adoration for music grew deeper, from participating in church choirs to spending decades volunteering at festivals. She’s able to channel that passion daily to champion music and the arts in Berks.

Q: When did your love for music and the arts develop?

I was raised in church, so as far as music goes, I was in children’s choir and then youth choir. So, music has always been a part of my life; it feels like forever. A s for the arts in other areas, I was introduced to it when I started volunteering at the Jazz Fest in the 1990s. That’s when I got to see all the other things Berks Arts did besides music.

Q: What prompted your tenure as a volunteer?

I went to a show at what was then known as the Rajah on Sixth Street in Downtown Reading and bumped into my cousin, Janet. Her husband, Stan, was a production manager. I walked out on stage one day and asked if I could help them with anything. Eventually, I started scheduling all of my vacation time around the festivals. I got to work the job I loved at the time while doing what I was really passionate about and being around the music. It was great. I started as a hospitality stage hand and then moved up to stage manager.

Q:

When did you realize you wanted to transition to a fulltime role in the arts?

It was secretly something that I had been praying about like, “Lord, I raised my family with the job that I had. Thank you, but now I would love to do what feeds my soul more than what I have to do to make ends meet.” So, when a full-time position was presented to me, it was kind of a no-brainer. Going from what I was hired to do two years ago to now being able to move forward and grow the organization is really exciting.

Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

It’s still mostly music related. Music feeds my soul. Before I took this role, I would travel to work at other festivals in other cities. I also have six grandchildren. I love spending time with them, and the babies are everything. They enjoy music as well. My oldest grandson, Kevin, is 14, and he has been singing in church in the youth choir and in school. He loves to sing. And then my oldest granddaughter, who’s 7, takes piano lessons.

Q: What’s something that excites you most about this new role?

I would love to be able to bring some of the other programs such as Fast Lane Art into the forefront of what Berks Arts does. Fast Lane Art is a program where students across the schools in Berks County can submit their artwork and win scholarships. The nice thing about that is their artwork also has the chance to be placed on local buildings and businesses. It’s a way to brighten up the community and showcase students’ talents. These pieces are just amazing, and they tell such a story. Putting art on every empty window or empty building would be the ultimate dream.

THOUGHTS FROM GRCA

The Standard Group’s FRESH PERSPECTIVES

On Pearl Street, around an inauspicious corner and up a few weathered stairs, you’ll find a small plaque emblazoned with the words “Standard Offset Publishing Company.” With roots in downtown Reading and a footprint that spirals outward towards Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester, what began as a humble box manufacturing company in 1895 has evolved into a cutting-edge print and communications powerhouse that’s anything but standard. Told by those who have honed their craft for decades and paired with fresh perspectives from a new generation, The Standard Group’s story isn’t just about putting ink on paper — it’s about perseverance, adaptation to new technologies and a commitment to

the human side of business. Join us as we explore how this 129-year-old company stays ahead of the curve, proving that in the world of print and packaging, imagination knows no bounds.

The Standard Group’s story began in 1895 as a box company whose products were delivered by horsedrawn carriage to the surrounding area. A company steeped in history and tradition, its acquisition by Charlotte Cooper in 1983 marked the beginning of a transformation into the communications company it is today.

“Charlotte Cooper’s leadership is really what transformed us into what I would call the “modern day” Standard Group and Standard Offset Printing,” explains CEO Jim Rowland.

Under Charlotte and her son Scott’s leadership, the company’s growth accelerated — even during unexpected times. During the 2008 economic downturn, for example, while others pulled back, The Standard Group expanded through strategic acquisitions, adding capabilities in Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester counties. Each acquisition brought unique strengths to the organization, such as G7 color management, brand and marketing portals, automation, LED UV printing, apparel and promotional products, thus diversifying its offerings and expanding its reach.

In 2017, The Standard Group took another bold step toward securing its future by becoming an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company. “Scott and Charlotte’s intention was to give back to the employees and keep the company ownership in the community,” notes CFO Keegan Worley. The transition enabled the company to reinvest in its people and technology while maintaining its commitment to quality and innovation.

The company’s dedication to culture and innovation runs deep and fosters an environment that empowers the team to think differently. “My job is to teach and coach everybody to have a different kind of mindset, one that encourages them to take ownership,” explains Nick Shonsky, Director of Quality Assurance. This emphasis on professional growth and collaborative problem-solving, combined with its status as an ESOP, creates a unique business ecosystem where innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit can flourish.

Today, The Standard Group stands as an undisputed leader in the printing and communications industry, offering services ranging from offset and digital printing to specialty packaging and promotional items. A focus on creating sensory experiences through print — whether through tactile finishes, scents, unique folds or innovative designs — solidifies its services and reminds us that, in an increasingly digital world, there’s still something special about what you can hold in your hand.

Spring is around the corner, the time of year signifying rebirth and a welcome return to the no-longer-frigid outdoors. It’s also the perfect time to make beneficial changes to your health. Here are 26 ways to improve your physical and mental well-being to the letter.

ELENA SCHWEITZER/ADOBE STOCK

bstain from, or cut back on, alcohol

Even drinking in moderation isn’t great for your body. It can affect your sleep, lead to high blood pressure and cause fatty build up around the liver. Plus, its empty calories often generate unwanted pounds. Try to limit your consumption to special occasions. If you feel you have a drinking problem, consider contacting Alcoholics Anonymous, 210 S. Fifth St. in Reading, at 610.373.6500.

B reakfast

It’s called the most important meal of the day for good reason. Breaking your nightly fast gets your metabolism in gear and prevents you from overeating later. Plus, studies show that eating after waking helps adults perform better at work and helps kids score better in school.

Drink plenty of fluids

As mentioned, all fluids are not equal. Water is best. Try to consume at least four to six cups a day, or more if you’re active. Keep highcalorie drinks like full-sugar soda, juices and saccharine coffee concoctions to a minimum.

Eolonoscopies

Yes, the preparation for these procedures can be a pain in the butt, but the colonoscopy itself is short and potentially lifesaving. When you hit 45, talk to your family doctor about setting up an appointment at a hospital, outpatient center or surgery center.

at a balanced diet

You are what you eat. Well, not literally, unless you’re a cannibal, in which case, stop. But figuratively speaking, it’s not in jest to suggest what you ingest and digest affects your physical and mental wellbeing. A balanced diet consists of fruits and vegetables, lean protein and whole grains. You don’t need to cut out sweets, but keep them to a minimum.

itness

This is the perfect time of year to improve your physical health, much better than the first weeks of the new year, which feature frigid outdoor temperatures and gyms overflowing with New Year’s novices. Hit the roads or trails (see the hiking, running and walking entries for more information) and/or check out area gyms, which include Alliance Fitness Center, Anytime Fitness, Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex, Garage Strength Sports Performance, LA Fitness, LJ's Fitness, Reading YMCA and Wyo Fit Clubs.

Gardening

Playing in the dirt as a child is all kinds of fun. Playing in the dirt as an adult is all kinds of beneficial. Spending time outdoors is good for your physical and mental health. And growing and eating your own fruits and vegetables can positively impact your diet.

Joints

The areas where two or more bones meet, allowing for movement, are important to daily function yet often overlooked. Some easy ways to keep your joints healthy are warming up before physical activity, cooling down and stretching after physical activity, strength training and losing pounds if you’re overweight.

“Take a hike” isn’t only a well-worn way to ask someone to leave, it’s also a way to get in shape while enjoying nature’s grandeur. Berks County is home to a healthy mix of trails including a stretch of the Appalachian Trail that range from relaxing to challenging.

mmune System

“Sick” is slang for excellent. But you know what isn’t sick? Getting sick. To help reduce the frequency and severity, take steps to boost your body’s immune system, which helps fight infections and other diseases. Fittingly, these tips overlap with other entries in this story: eat well, exercise, maintain a healthy weight, get enough sleep and cut back on or cut out smoking and alcohol.

Potassium, represented by the symbol K, is special. The mineral helps your nerves, muscles and heart to function well; helps control blood pressure; and protects against strokes and osteoporosis. Foods high in potassium include bananas, avocados, raisins, apricots, beans, lentils, potatoes, spinach and broccoli.

assage

Besides the incredible, relaxing feeling they provide, massages have many physical benefits, including improved circulation and decreased muscle stiffness and joint inflammation. Area masseuses include 2024 Best of Berks winner New Beginnings Massage Wellness Center, Judith Gabriel Integrational Bodyworks, Massage Envy, The Salt Lounge, Sincerity Massage Therapy and Wellness and Tina’s Therapeutic Touch Massage Services.

Laugh

Calling laughter a great form of stress release might seem like a joke, but there’s a healthy dose of truth to it. In the short term, laughter increases the production and release of endorphins, can help decrease your blood pressure and soothes tension. In the long term, it can improve your immune system and relieve pain.

WAVEBREAKMEDIAMICRO/ADOBESTOCK
RAWPIXELCOM/ADOBESTOCK
GRESEI/ADOBESTOCK

eatness

Being neat is neat. It’s not just putting things back where they belong and organizing your closet; it ’s establishing habits, routines and mindsets. The more organized you are around the house, the more organized you will feel outside of it. “Cleanliness is next to godliness” and all that.

Outdoors

Spending time outside is priceless for your physical and mental well-being. Luckily, the Greater Reading area excels at nurturing nature. The county runs nearly a dozen parks and recreation areas; Blue Marsh Lake attracts thousands of boaters, fishers and swimmers; mountain bikers get in gear with the Greater Reading Trails System; and hikers have plenty of options for keeping in step with the times.

hysicals Running

Too many Americans put off their

a reduction in the risk of stroke and lung cancer. Plus, you won’t need to freeze your tail off going outside for a smoke during the winter months. If you need help, contact the Reading Area of Narcotics Anonymous at 610.374.5944 or rascna.org.

It’s the best workout you can get in the least amount of time. Though daunting for beginners or those getting back into shape, running can be revelatory. And you don’t have to do it alone. Berks County is home to a healthy number of running clubs, organizations and specialty stores including Pagoda Pacers, Pretzel City Sports, Nemesis Fitness and Fleet Feet West Reading to assist you in your journey.

kincare

Annual full-body skin exams at a dermatologist are as important as annual physicals. These exams, during which the dermatologist looks for suspicious growths or spots, can be a literal lifesaver because most skin cancers are treatable if caught early. And always use sunscreen.

ry something new

Routines can become a little too routine. A quick and easy way to change your perspective and step outside of your comfort zone is to do things out of the ordinary, no matter how small. Take a new route to work, try a new restaurant or cook something

Unplug

Electronic devices have become so interconnected with our existence that it seems impossible to imagine life without them. But a digital detox getting back to basics by temporarily cutting out phones and tablets can recalibrate your mind by cutting out the hustle-bustle, allowing you to focus on simply being.

Vitamins

A healthy diet will provide your body with most of the vitamins it needs. But it’s important to fill in any gaps, especially as you get older, and a daily multivitamin is a quick and easy way to do that. Add a probiotic to the mix for an additional boost to your immune system.

It’s the most basic form of exercise, one that most of us do daily without even thinking about it. But it’s effective, especially if you pick up the pace to increase your heart rate. Even a leisurely stroll has benefits for the body and mind. Just put one foot in front of the other.

The social media site formerly known as Twitter has become a very unwelcoming place. But other platforms aren’t much better, especially if you spend too much time on them. Either cut them out or create a social media budget and stick to it. And make liberal use of the “unfollow” and “block” functions.

Yoga

Its origins stretch back to ancient India, but yoga is hot today, especially the hot yoga variety. The exercise improves flexibility and posture, strengthens muscles, enhances balance and reduces stress. Local purveyors of the craft include Creation Yoga, BLDG. 7 Yoga, Double Sunrise Yoga, Hot Yoga West Reading and Orangetheory Fitness.

Don’t sleep on sleep. Getting seven to nine hours a night is essential. In the short term, shut-eye sharpens memory and focus. In the long term, it lowers your risk of heart disease and keeps your metabolism humming. Ways to get better sleep: eat a healthy diet; cut back on caffeine and alcohol; exercise; keep your room dark and quiet; avoid screens before bed; and try to stick to a sleep schedule.

LISTENING TO YOUR STOMACH Th at Gut Feeli n g

Beyond just a fad, gut health has found its moment in the spotlight. Now is the time to address when and how to listen to our stomach and what we can learn. How do we transform that unpleasant gut feeling into agreeable gut health for life? What with cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, wrinkles and more, where do we draw the line between preventative health and complete DNA gene mapping to tell us our proclivity for certain diseases? Lori Borja, R.N., M.S., CNS, and a PA-licensed nutritionist with a nursing background and mother of three, pursued her interest to found her own practice with a focus on Nutrition for Life as a way to prevent disease and treat digestive issues. Borja helps patients of all ages reduce worry and plan for healthier eating and ultimately healthier living.

Imagine any great drama with one or more heroes where good guys and bad guys collide. Sooner or later, one side prevails over the other, either temporarily or permanently. That’s essentially what occurs in your gut a microcosm community of healthy and unhealthy characters coexisting in your belly. Your own choices (eating) encourage which characters (gut health symptoms you experience) are introduced into your gut cast. How these compete for and influence your health is up to you.

Making Good Choices

Borja is downright honest about digestive health from the getgo. “A healthy digestive system is essential for whole body health,” she says definitively. “This includes effective digestion, the immune system, brain and heart health, improved mood, sleep and potential prevention of illnesses and disease.” (Ah! Useful, productive characters.)

Borja makes certain to mention balance in her goals in working with clients, which is a must. “Nutritional and lifestyle support can help create the proper balance to manage negative factors that can affect our gut and the body’s protective response,” explains Borja. In other words, digestion affects many aspects of life. Being intentional can prevent those bad actors from infiltrating the cast and

outweighing the good. Plus, you may ultimately be able to worry less about all those other ailments which frighten us.

Connecting the dots between disease and symptoms is important. Borja starts with a laundry list of symptoms to consider. Let’s say you or a family member encounters one of those distasteful characters in your drama: upset stomach, gas, bloating, heartburn, constipation and/or diarrhea. They can really make your life miserable, and all may be symptoms of an unhealthy gut, not just random results of an unsavory meal, little exercise or a nasty bug. “Additionally,” Borja clarifies, “gut issues may underlie chronic health problems that seem unrelated to digestive health such as autoimmune diseases, skin problems, as well as others.”

Lori Borja, R.N., M.S., CNS

Seeking Hel p

Many of us to allow time to pass before we consider seeking professional help, thinking maybe our symptoms and discomfort will disappear if we just wait long enough. When that plot line doesn’t materialize, when the bad guys don’t vanish, we seek a different direction for our personal health story. Finding someone who has the depth of knowledge and experience may take time, but Borja found the field extremely captivating and is ready and waiting to offer aid. She attests to the joy and satisfaction of helping someone improve their overall health.

As a professional, Borja’s interest in nutrition evolved, she explains, through her years of experiences in the workplace and as a parent of three. “With a background as a registered nurse, I recognized the great need to prevent disease processes as well as treating them. I wanted to utilize my education and experience in an area that would promote health and wellness. The desire to promote healthy eating and lifestyle

changes led me to continue my education in the field of nutrition,” she shares. “I obtained a Master’s degree in Applied Clinical Nutrition from New York Chiropractic College. I am also a Certified Nutrition Specialist, the gold standard for advanced nutrition professionals, and a PA-Licensed Nutritionist.”

How do most people find a specialist like Borja? “Clients often seek nutritional services after other illnesses or diseases have been ruled out, but they continue to have symptoms affecting their daily lives. It is also common for individuals to experience symptoms for many years before finally seeking help, or they had initially addressed their issues in the medical community, but symptoms either returned or never resolved. Just starting with improving their food intake and eating habits, symptoms can improve or resolve. I support clients by providing personalized sample meal plans, recipes and meal prepping ideas, among others.”

Common Complaints

In the best stories, the hero (often the underdog) rescues the distressed in creative ways. The hero must have details about the yet-to-be-rescued dilemma, determine what obstacles stand in her way, then let the magic unfold. According to Borja, “The most common conditions clients seek nutritional services for in my practice include GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease), IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), celiac disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, overweight or obesity issues and food intolerances and sensitivities. Other individuals present with nutrient deficiencies.”

“Their most typical symptoms relate to gut issues," adds Borja. “This includes bloating,

gas, stomach or intestinal pain, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn and fatigue. While I work with a client’s medical doctor, I do emphasize a more holistic approach to healing the gut through focusing on gut restoration by dietary approaches that can help restore healthy function of the digestive system.”

Nutrition for Life, for Borja, truly encompasses the entire personal health story from start to finish. “There are natural supplements that I recommend, along with dietary approaches, identifying potential food intolerances, allergies, sensitivities, identifying nutrient deficiencies, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing stress, physical activity and other lifestyle changes to improve and support their health.”

I do emphasize a mor e hol istic approach to heal ing the gut...” "

Ba l ance

We’ve all encountered characters in a story that appear harmless but later are revealed to be decadent, damaging and detrimental. Borja agrees that these disguised characters can be tricky to avoid. “Removing and reducing inflammatory foods in the diet such as sugar, vegetable oil, fried foods and refined flour, along with artificial sweeteners, additives, saturated fats, processed foods, trans fats and alcohol, is emphasized to help avoid an unhealthy gut.”

For her nutrition clients, Borja designs a food plan that focuses on “eating healthy whole foods, nutrient-dense foods and being mindful of proper portions and serving sizes. Eating a diet high in fiber can contribute to a healthy gut microbiome as well. Often, an elimination diet will be temporarily utilized to help identify food intolerances or sensitivities and to support proper gut restoration.” Finally, Borja emphasizes, “Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water daily is also important for gut health.”

Age

Despite what some may believe, there’s no specific age or age range when people begin to experience gut troubles. The best way to approach good gut health is to prevent an unhealthy gut, advises Borja. “Preventing issues with the digestive system is important even within the first two years of life. Establishing a healthy bowel microflora can be effective by avoiding and limiting antibiotics, especially early in life. Breastfeeding and proper introduction of solid foods can have an impact as well as establishing healthy eating habits in childhood.”

The encouraging ending of this healthy gut saga is that there are dedicated healthcare professionals to guide us in good nutrition and healthy eating practices, especially when we’re unable to achieve this on our own. Listen to what your stomach is saying. Listen to that gut feeling. Restoring balance in your digestive system is not a fairy tale but an achievable goal.

CARVING OUT A PERSONAL TRAINING SPACE

There’s a real rhythm to Stephanie Grace’s life. Actually, there are real rhythms.

The one she’s best known for is her music.

The one she’s becoming increasingly known for is her physical training work.

Both provide rhythms for herself and others for contentment, inspiration and good health. One might deduce that Stephanie is both a trained musician as well as a seasoned athlete.

A GIRL AND HER SONGS

This vibrant young millennial has had a drive since childhood, inspired by parents who exposed her to the country music that has become her trademark genre early on. At the still-tender age of 28, she can look back on opening for such stars as fellow Berks Countian Taylor Swift and The Charlie Daniels Band. Notably, she has performed in Nashville, released several CDs and has written more than 70 songs.

This Douglassville talent started singing in public at age 7. By the age of 18, in 2015, Stephanie was the opening act at the annual Lyons Fiddle Festival.

She and her band are featured at some 50 gigs each year, primarily in this region of the state and at nearby venues in bordering New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.

“Generally, we perform within a two-anda-half to three-hour drive,” she says, “but in the past year, I started working with an agent, and we’re building and expanding.”

While music is her forever first love (along with her husband, Ryan Foltz, a Douglass Township police officer), Stephanie has a second passion: physical fitness.

Though never an athlete during her years at Boyertown Area High School, she did begin trips to her local gym, Snap Fitness Douglassville, at the age of 19.

“After graduation, I knew I wanted to do music full time,” she says, “and I simultaneously fell in love with fitness.”

LOCAL AND LOVING IT

She found her local gym, small and family oriented, to be just perfect.

“The last few years of high school I was not feeling great on stage,” Stephanie says. “As a teen, I didn’t like my body, and truthfully, I was a couch potato. I knew I should be in good – at least better – shape for my heart and lungs for performing and endurance.”

She started researching options, which brought her to Snap, just five minutes from her parents’ home.

Her go-to person became her trainer, Adam Schanely.

“Through working with him, I genuinely became confident with exercising,” she says. “Through 2016 and 2017, in those two years, I saw the way exercise and training impacted my body image and my overall health.”

Better eating habits became part of her new routine.

“I began researching recipes,” she says. Her involvement at Snap evolved into a job working the front desk for two years. Clients knew her from her dedicated workouts. With Schanely being the only trainer at the gym, Stephanie found herself fielding questions, primarily from female clients.

“I was certainly hesitant to give any advice because I wasn’t certified,” she says, “but I saw a pattern that women were more comfortable working with fellow females.”

Many questions focused on women’s strength training.

A MATTER OF STRENGTH

“That’s what was always most important to me –not to be skinny, but to be strong,” she says, “and not bridging that gap [being unable to provide certified advice], well, it all kept haunting me.”

So, after discussions with Ryan and her parents, Tom and Roseann Grace, Stephanie decided to work towards earning her trainer’s certification.

“Everyone said: ‘Go do it,’” she recalls

In May 2019, Stephanie obtained her personal trainer certification through the International Sports Sciences Association.

Still, she had one very real concern despite her intentions.

“I was afraid folks would think I gave up singing, and that would have devastated me,” she says. “I couldn’t see how people would really think I’d throw that away.”

While her worries may have been real at the time, the reality post-certification was a different thing. Being a personal trainer enabled her to set her own hours, which served as a complement to her musical engagements.

While at Snap, she began developing a client base with a free “meet the trainer” session where she could work with potential clients on setting goals. Despite the challenges, her small client base there expanded.

CHANGING COURSE

But in the spring of 2020, the pandemic struck, and that initiated a rethinking of her own ability to continue working out and carving an independent career path. Opportunity knocked at the couple’s Douglassville area townhouse.

Stephanie and Ryan transformed their Covid-era “little house gym,” as she fondly called it, into a modest but state-of-the-art basementlevel workout facility able to accommodate one or two clients at a time.

There’s no treadmill, but the compact gym is with the requisite exercise equipment designed for strength training, Stephanie’s specialty, as well as resistance training and cardio conditioning. Her first acquisition was a power rack with barbells and plates. She bought an additional 1,000 pounds of barbells second hand through a client. There’s also the standard pulley-based resistance machine and weighted gym balls.

To promote her business, Stephanie does her own marketing and created the website: stephgracefitness.com. By word of mouth in the Douglassville area, several of her female acquaintances from Snap sought her out.

Her home client base consists of many local young moms (and dads) able to squeeze in workout time around work and child care responsibilities. (A saving grace here –Stephanie does permit the occasional older child to come along as a small corner off the gym is reserved for children to watch their iPads or

The first consultation with a prospective

“I find out what their goals are, what they to accomplish and whatever have,” she says. “Then, There’s no pressure; I don’t do the contracts many trainers do. I don’t want to make folks feel the

OLDIES AND GOODIES AT FITNESS

In addition to the moms she trains, Stephanie also has a more senior clientele looking to stay healthy and active.

“Several are 50-plus,” she says, “and my oldest client right now is 70. They see the value in being strong and how important that is as they age. They motivate me, really, and at the end of the day, their intent is to maintain independence as they age.”

Indeed, Stephanie says that at age 28 it’s easy to take basic movements for granted, from reaching higher shelves to sitting on a toilet efforts that can be dicey for the elderly. She sees her clients bucking those fears through strength and resistance training, retaining as much muscle mass as possible.

“It’s great to see how youthful, really, my clients are,” she says. “I’m happy to be their cheerleader. As they say, move it or lose it.”

She notes that consultation and assessment are important to establish clients’ base abilities as well as their goals.

“Sometimes people will convince themselves that they can’t work with a trainer until they’re ‘in better shape’ but this defeats the whole purpose!” she asserts.

“My big thing is you have to figure out what your starting point is,” she says. “It’s important not to overshoot.”

Stephanie notes an early-on example of assessing one 35-year-old female client.

“I had her do squats, lunges, step-ups, all in one session,” she says. But the next day the client reported knee pain.

TRUST THE PROCESS ” “

“That was a lesson learned. It’s not a person’s age, but it’s understanding their training history. A trainer needs to ask such things as when did you last do squats, how heavy are the weights you’ve lifted and how long ago did you do these things.”

Again, age is not the determinant. Stephanie recalls an 80-yearold client able to do subtle squats by bending her knees with a bit of support. She went on to moderate exercises.

“What’s neat about exercise is the body adapts,” she says. “It’s good to do more, deeper exercise but to ease into it.”

WITH OVER 15 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE and the ability to offer safe, natural, and proven hormone therapy to men and women, Becky McClure, CRNP, and her team can give you the power to feel like yourself again!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROCESS

“It’s the process. Trust the process.”

Trusting the process is important for young folks just being introduced to fitness training.

Stephanie notes that while small children may like to emulate their parents and other adults in their world, they are not yet true candidates for training.

“I don’t want your kid to resent fitness,” she says.

While research varies, the optimal age to begin training is at ages 13 or 14, something that especially benefits bone density and strength in growing adolescents, she shares.

Stephanie’s gym décor is sparse, as one might expect, but there are a few motivating quotes on the walls, and at the holidays, bits of seasonal accents appear. Music, so important in her primary vocation, is also woven into the workout experience.

“I rely on Spotify, especially lots of 1970s and 1980s music,” she says. “The Bluetooth speaker was one of the first things I bought for the gym.”

She trains both on individual and partner bases pairs of friends, spouses or partners, sometimes a mom and adult daughter. She’ll also write programs clients can use in their homes and can provide group instruction offsite.

Stephanie encourages her clients to exercise on a regular schedule. The importance of balance is critical on two levels: healthy does not entail restricting foods or beating yourself up if you miss a workout, she says.

“I recognize and try to make sure clients feel motivated on the days they aren’t here,” she says.

She also tries to be cognizant of what might be happening to a client on a given day maybe a sick preschooler or a bad day at work.

“I adapt to what the client is feeling that day because it’s going to be different every day the client comes in,” she says. “I recommend training as often as you can. It can help work out the pain of the day, and training provides a tool belt for that.”

Her satisfaction in her training work comes through her clients’ accomplishments.

She sees them start with the handfuls of basic exercises squats, hip lunges, pressing, lifting and resistance and observes them graduating to more advanced versions of the same.

“It’s magical what happens to your body and your outlook when you’re consistent,” she says. “I feel really proud.” stephgracefitness.com | stephanie-grace.com

Naturally Delectable 3 SPOTS FOR HEALTHY EATS

These amazing locations make healthy dining a cinch! Check them out when you don't want to cook but want to eat something delicious and good for you too.

Fresh Frenchy’s

Fresh Frenchy’s started in Mount Penn but recently moved to Exeter Township. Owners Andrea and Francesco Amato explain: “We’ve increased our seating by three times, with outdoor dining opportunities,” and they now offer bistro-style lunch and dinner with all-day brunch on Sundays. They also serve Pennsylvania-made spirits and craft cocktails created with homemade syrups and mixes (no preservatives).

“We noticed a demand for food that fits people’s dietary preferences,” says Andrea, “whether gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, or — in general — clean food and as much organic food as possible. For instance, we use no seed oils — just extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and ghee.” Customers really like their burgers. “What makes the burgers special is we get our beef from a local source, grass-fed and grass-finished,” says Andrea. “Many people say that they can’t

eat any other burgers anymore after trying ours!” Francesco adds, “The burgers seem to retain a better moisture level — never dried out.” Choices include AllAmerican and a Barbecue Bacon Burger with homemade barbecue sauce, which Francesco describes as having “a little bit of heat and a little bit of sweet — pulling all the flavors out of the burger.” Then there’s the Pepper Jam Burger with pepperjack cheese and jalapenos, plus a crowd-favorite Black Bean Quinoa Burger.

Baked goods are all gluten-free, made by Andrea, who says, “I do a Chocolate Java Cake with peanut butter icing; it’s very popular.” It’s extra moist. “In 2025, we want to introduce Berks Countians to affogatos — Italian gelato in an espresso cup,” says Francesco.

“We’re 100 percent plant-based and try our best to offer up mostly whole foods.” All baked goods are made in-house, from breads (including sourdough), scones and bagels to organic multigrain rolls and ever popular croissants. “We use 100 percent organic flour and 100 percent organic cane sugar,” says Loriann. “We try to include sweeteners other than refined sugars — like, for example, maple syrup.” Loriann does all the baking; Michael focuses more on savory foods.

Firefly Café and Outpost

“Our Tofu Scramble is amazing,” Loriann raves. “I’m a longtime vegan vegetarian — I haven’t eaten meat in 30 years — and what makes this dish so special is the spices Michael adds. Years of tweaking have made it the perfect recipe.” Firefly makes their own meat substitute in-house called seitan. “We use seitan for our Chicken Sandwich and all sorts of different things — burgers made with seitan, and Fried Chicken and a Barbecue Chicken Sandwich, both very popular. The wheat gluten (in seitan) is the main protein binder,” explains Loriann. She adds, “We have a Black Bean Burger as well.” Their

biscuits are 100 percent vegan, perfect for Breakfast Sammies. Firefly’s full beverage menu boasts organic kombucha — "very natural” — with all-organic teas and coffee. Loriann points to more popular drinks, like “organic matcha, hoji chai, mushroominfused coffee that’s woody and earthy and a Golden Milk with organic turmeric and maple syrup.”

Clean Eatz

Sarah Deisher, who co-owns Clean Eatz with Dani Zeamer, says, “We like to describe ourselves as a healthy dine-in café and meal prepping company. Our name just means we use healthy fats and healthy carbs, and we weigh and portion everything. The customer will know the details of all ingredients! It’s a lifestyle — not a diet. Nothing bland or boring. You get all the nutrients you need, and the portions are exactly what you want and need.”

Three main aspects shine: Weekly Meal Plans, Grab ’n’ Go and the Café. The Weekly Meal Plan menu offers six meals to choose from — e.g., pizza or a premium meal plan that might contain bison, salmon or tiptop steak for a higher-priced

protein option. The plan is not a subscription — you pick and choose meals, all made onsite. Simply order online, then pick up on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. “Sunday is our busiest day of the week,” says Sarah. “Our customers are awesome. We know most of them by name and know about their families and their stories. We have a mixture of people: singles, businesspeople, teachers, nurses, parents whose kids are busy with sports…” Beverages include protein smoothies and protein coffee, energy drinks and lifestyle waters that contain zero sugar, zero calories, immunity elements and electrolytes. “At the café, I personally like the Turkey Burnt End Cuban,” says Sarah. “It’s a

flatbread sandwich — so good, with so much flavor! It’s moist and flavored with Clean Eatz’s epic sauce of honey mustard and barbecue. Buffalo Chicken Mac ’n’ Cheese is a top seller, but the Lobster Mac ’n’ Cheese is so popular, laughs Sarah, “we can never keep it in stock — people will call in and ask if we have it that week.”
