LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Staff Speaks What was your first concert experience?

It’s probably no secret that summer is one of my favorite times of the year. For that reason, and many more, our July “Summer” issue ranks near the top of my list of those to coordinate, too. From revealing our 8th Annual Pet Photo Contest winners on page 22 to pulling together a cool scavenger hunt across Berks County (page 26), there’s a lot of fun to be had on the pages that follow. Many of you are likely looking to cool off while enjoying the hot weather. Grab a slushy from one of the spots in our 5 Things feature on page 21. And keep your hair up, feeling and looking cool with one of the great items from Berks-based retailers as featured in The Look on page 18. July also looks to offer a return of outdoor concerts, likely kicking off with the Bandshell Concert Series from Berks Arts. And those who enjoy the visual arts can always explore murals and mosaic work across West Reading and Hamburg. In fact, West Reading is looking to make arts a priority as it shifts its theme later this year. Learn more in our Living In Style piece on page 40. Visiting and want to enjoy a delicious, authentic Greek meal? Head to Mazi, profiled on page 54. As we look to overcome the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic, Berks is really coming to life this summer. Get out and enjoy it! Best, 21

“The first I can really remember was a Jesse McCartney concert in Atlantic City. It was a big venue and my friends and I got bumped to a closer seat with a better view of the stage. I was a total fangirl at the time.” – Vanessa Goffredo, art director “My first concert experience was New Kids on the Block when I was around 11 or 12 years old. It was a great time and one of the moments I clearly remember is Jonathan Knight shaking a giant inflatable snowman while they sang a Christmas song.” – Elizabeth Beebe, account executive “I saw The Jackson 5 Reunion Tour. My younger sister was along and I remember her falling asleep. I was a huge Michael Jackson fan.” – Nikki M. Murry, editor “My mom took me to Valley Forge to see Michael Jackson. I still have the ticket stubs to this day. It was a very memorable moment for my mom and I.” – Sara Woodward, account executive “Duran Duran in NC in 1983…Hungry Like the Wolf!” – Heather PendergastBaker, account executive

AROUND TOWN Non-Invasive Enhancement

The body-contouring procedures at Advanced Skin Care are for women and men alike and are 100 percent non-invasive and comfortable. Several methods are available to choose from to aid in losing extra inches, to tone up for swimsuit season and to boost your fitness routine. Choosing to live a healthy lifestyle of regular exercise and maintaining a well-balanced diet will help to ensure a longer-lasting outcome, though results are still visible regardless. Dr. Comite explains, “This does not take the place of your fitness program. It enhances it and takes it to a much higher level.” Here’s what’s offered…

• EMSCULPT®: A non-invasive treatment that helps build, define and tone muscle, reduce fat permanently, restore your core and reduce low back pain. It also targets biceps, triceps, abdominals, legs and more. • VanquishMe™ and Cellutone™: A combined treatment that decreases waist and thigh circumference and breaks down fat cells permanently. • Exilis™ Ultra: Tightens, smooths and contours facial skin around the eyes and mouth as well as the neck, abs and those pesky love handles. It also aids in permanently reducing fat in areas including the abs, arms and legs. • EMSELLA®: a non-invasive treatment that strengthens bladder and pelvic floor muscles and improves issues relating to urinary incontinence.

Safe and Pain-free

Safe for all. Precautions should be taken for those with pacemakers or metal in their body. Women will not be treated during pregnancy. No pain, lots of gain. Each 30-minute session of EMSCULPT® is equal to doing roughly 20,000 crunches or squats while remaining comfortable and pain-free.

Achieve a Summer-Ready Body BY KELLY TANGER | PHOTO BY BIANCA HART

Sit back, relax and enhance your physique all at once. How? With a visit to Advanced Skin Care, Laser & Body Contouring Center in Wyomissing. Board-Certified Dermatologist Dr. Harriet Comite and her team of highly trained technicians offer an array of body sculpting and contouring procedures to help you to look your best, just in time for swimsuit and shorts season. These treatment methods support the sculpting, toning, smoothing and tightening of various body parts and muscle groups including the abdomen, arms and other areas often found to be tricky to tweak. Read on to discover which procedure best fits the location you’d like to improve.

By using technology such as HIFEM (High Intensity Focused ElectroMagnetic) to create extra-powerful muscle contractions, to noninvasive Radio Frequency to eliminate fat cells, all of the equipment is safe and FDA approved. These procedures are the only non-invasive, effective treatments in the world. Dr. Comite says, “These devices are unique. There’s nothing else like it.” Some of the treatments, such as with VanquishMe and Exilis™ Ultra, are performed while lying down, while others like EMSELLA® are done while sitting on a chair. There is no prep involved other than properly hydrating prior to VanquishMe™ and Cellutone™, and all treatments are performed with minimal contact. The setting is comfortable enough that you can read your favorite book while receiving treatment. Procedures are offered as a series of 4-6 treatments. Sessions can last anywhere from 28 to 60 minutes, and afterwards, you can go about your day and resume all normal activities. The only side effect you may experience is muscle soreness, just as you might after a gym workout. Pricing varies for each type of treatment. AROUND TOWN IN THE LIMELIGHT me and sing along to America, the Beautiful. I’ve held children on my lap while playing guitar and get them to sing along so they feel less scared. I’ve had patients ask if they could fall asleep to music and then suddenly take their last few breathes. I’ve had alert patients say I helped to save their relationships with their kids or show forgiveness and love to a spouse. Music was the key that unlocked the door to my grandfather’s mind and spirit when he had Alzheimer’s. He reverted back to who he was. Your band, The Hannah Violet Trio, all seasoned musicians, has toured throughout Nashville, TN, PA and surrounding areas. How did it come together? Basically, my guitarist, Phil Pilorz, and I met while playing in a band, and then we decided to start our own trio. Phil comes from a long trail of cross-country performing and received a lifetime achievement award for his guitar playing and has more of a rock background. I am more of the folk, country sound, and then our third member, Dave “Mitch” Miller, my dad, comes from an oldtimey/Irish background and plays fiddle, mandolin and percussion. I play fiddle and guitar along with lead vocals and love to harmonize when either Phil or Mitch take the lead. We have a really happy down-home sound that has carried us for over 11 years.

Hannah Violet

Music Therapist and Recording Artist BY VERNA FISHER | PHOTO BY ALI HUBBELL PHOTOGRAPHY

Hannah Violet has been performing music most of her life, and she knew she wanted to help people with it, but it wasn’t until she witnessed the healing effects of music with her grandfather, unlocking his Alzheimer’s condition, that she realized her calling was to be a music therapist. Can you explain the role of a Hospice Board-Certified Music Therapist and describe some success stories? Sure. I am a board-certified and hospice-certified music therapist working full-time with Bayada Hospice serving patients in their homes, facilities and hospitals. I built the program for Bayada throughout our Pennsylvania and Delaware offices and created positions for additional music therapists. I play guitar, fiddle, piano, and I sing. Music Therapy is therapy where music is the vehicle for transformation, transition and translation. In therapeutic settings, I’ve seen weakened war veterans who could barely respond lift their head just to salute

What does your free time look like? Before COVID, there wasn’t much free time for our farm. I’m married to a wonderful cowboy from South Dakota. Joe is a saddle bronc rider and was in rodeos every weekend. Now, we’ve been forced to slow down, and had the chance to be home, continue with renovations on our log home, spend time in the flower gardens, ride horses, enjoy our animals. Finally, we became parents to a beautiful little boy, Stone Timothy, born in January 2021. Now I make sure we savor our free time.

GET MORE. Listen in.

Hannah released her debut CD, Violet Sky, and filmed a music video in Las Vegas in 2015. Grab the album at live events, on Amazon or at reverbnation. com. Catch her concert schedule at hannahviolet.com.

AROUND TOWN THOUGHTS FROM THE CHAMBER ALLIANCE

Bring on the Events BY DEVON FIORE, Events Coordinator, GRCA, 606 Court St., Reading

That time of year is upon us – outdoor distanced events and the hope for in-person indoor events are looking bright on the horizon! Event coordinators like myself have been planning for this time since March 2020, and we are all so excited to get back into event venues to see everyone’s faces in person once more! The Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) has been holding events virtually throughout Q1 and Q2 and began to phase in some in-person events in June. Mark your calendars for GRCA’s Annual Picnic coming up next month on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at FirstEnergy Stadium. This evening of networking, food and fun is a member favorite. GRCA staff has been hard at work making sure that all state and CDC guidelines are strictly adhered to and updated as necessary. It’s going to be a great (and safe) event! Moving into the fall, GRCA hopes to introduce a hybrid model for signature events such as the Annual Dinner and Building Berks Awards, as well as the Manufacturing Summit. Larger events such as these will have an in-person component — likely with an attendance limit to keep in line with any CDC guidelines — for those who are comfortable attending events in-person at that time. The plan is to also incorporate

a virtual element to these events (such as Zoom, Remo or another video platform) for those who are not yet comfortable attending events inperson and for those past the in-person cap. Many event dates and venues are listed as TBD right now, but GRCA will be releasing that information as soon as possible. Follow GRCA on social media for the most up-to-date information on upcoming events. Throughout the past year and a half, I, like many other event planners around the world, have been researching hybrid events and how I can make them an incredible experience for everyone involved, whether they are in-person with us or individuals are tuning in from the comfort of their own home. I cannot wait to show you the cool ideas our team has up our sleeves for the hopeful end of this strange time!  UPCOMING EVENT GRCA Annual Picnic 4 to 9pm, Tuesday, Aug. 3 at FirstEnergy Stadium, Reading.

What are you looking forward to in Reading this summer season and beyond in 2021? A:

It is refreshing to see a resurgence of events and activities being

scheduled and taking place in Reading and the greater Reading area as the coronavirus pandemic subsides. As a volunteer with both Berks Arts (formerly Berks Arts Council) and the Reading Public Library, I’m

looking forward to getting back into the community. Berks Arts will host its Bandshell Summer Concert Series which will take place in City Park in

July. It will also be hosting Jazz Fest on August 13-22 and Blues Fest later this year in November. The Reading Public Library is set to host its annual Keith Mooney, Attorney 50 N. Fifth Street, 2nd Floor Reading, PA 19601 kmooney@barley.com 610-898-7155

Wet Noses Whisker Kisses Meet Our 8th Annual Pet Photo Contest Winners COMPI LED BY N I KKI M. MUR RY W I NNE R’ S P H OTO BY S USAN L . AN GS TADT PHOTOG RAP HY

It’s a difficult task for sure, but voters took to the polls this past March at berkscountyliving.com to weigh in on what Berks residents’ pets they liked best. We compiled the results to see which 10 came out on top. Meet and get to know them, here.

1

BRODY HENRY Age: 6 (pictured) & Henry, 10 Parents: Jeremy Arndt & Rendy Ortiz, Pennside Nicknames: Big Boy, Baby Boy, Honeys — the list goes on! Henry’s favorite things: Lap time, getting his back scratched and riding shotgun in the car Brody’s favorite things: Naps, ice cubes, visitors, and his brother, Henry

How would you describe the relationship between Brody and Henry? Henry came first and welcomed Brody with open paws. Brody always was the “Little Brother” annoying Henry, but Henry was always accepting and playful with him. Both boys always fought for our attention, by either nudging, wining or paw tapping.

How do your pets enrich your life? What experiences do you share with them? “I was always a person who never really wanted pets. In fact, I was so against having one! When Henry came into my life my heart was quickly opened. He taught me how to love in a different, deeper way. Brody came shortly after and when I say he’s the dog version me, I mean it. He gets me and enjoys just being in bed all day just like me; I won’t even mention the attitude! My boys are my every day, there is truly nothing like them,” says Rendy. “At first I thought I rescued Henry, but as the years passed, I realized he rescued me. Both Henry and Brody have taught me responsibility, patience and unconditional love. Losing Henry has been really hard because he really was a best friend. But we have Brody to comfort us and to help us navigate forward in this journey. He needs us, although we probably need him more! There is a saying that I always loved: When I needed a hand, I found your paw,” says Jeremy. Editor’s note: We are sad to announce that between the time Henry and Brody were entered into the contest and when our winners were determined, Henry passed away. We send our heartfelt condolences to Jeremy and Rendy for their loss.

DEWEY

Age: 12 Parents: Chris Lincoln & Heidi Reuter of West Reading Nicknames: Bubby, Doodles

What would you say makes Dewey unique? What does he do that warms your heart or makes you laugh? Dewey has the best personality, and he is very smart. We love his facial expressions, his chill vibe, and he loves everyone that he meets. (And everybody LOVES him!)

us. We went to The Sanctuary at Haafsville in Breinigsville, and when we got there Luna, then known as Josie, was just waking up from a nap. She rolled over on her back and started purring like crazy when we petted her. We thought she was adorable, and it was love at first sight! When we asked the volunteers about her, we learned that she had been at the shelter for just over a year after being rescued from a high kill shelter in Tennessee. The volunteers were surprised that she was letting us pet her and warned us that it may take her quite a bit of time to get acclimated to her new home, but Luna had different plans. In just a week’s time she was sleeping in bed with us every night. She quickly became a lap cat, as well as our shadow always following us around.

ENJOYING

THE ARTS OUTDOORS

BY D ONNA REED

SATURDAY, APRIL 17. It’s a date that few may have considered special, but for those in the local entertainment and arts scene, it was a game changer. Or, to be more specific, that evening was a game changer. Why? It was then that the Reading Symphony Orchestra returned to its home stage at the Santander Performing Arts Center and, with the musicians, came the audience, in person, grateful to usher back a live local performance. It’s been tough to be a virtuoso in a pandemic. Musicians and members of every facet of the entertainment business suffered professionally and fiscally through the

40

JULY 2021 | berkscountyliving.com

long year-plus of COVID-19 isolation. Fans and devotees learned that virtual attendance was better than nothing, but certainly lacking the full-on live sensory perspective. But now, as Summer 2021 settles in, so does a return to the stage and the arts. Hopes are high, as this article is written, that many of the seasonal entertainment venues and art exhibitions will be welcoming performers and attendees throughout Berks County. Helping make that happen: a proliferation of folks who have been fully vaccinated and a sturdy supply of vaccines for those still in need.

TIME FOR SOME

HOT JAZZ

Kerber looks to events like the bandshell series and the Boscov’s Berks JazzFest, moved from its usual spring standard to the third week of August, as signs of a return to normalcy on the local entertainment scene. “Yes, the Berks Jazz Fest is back -- and it will be hotter than ever!” says John Ernesto, general manager, alluding to both the slated performers and its seasonal change. The jazz fest, which will mark its 30th anniversary, plans a series of large- and smaller-scale concerts beginning Aug. 13 and concluding Aug. 22. Major concerts are set for the following venues: The Crowne Plaza and the Inn at Reading in Wyomissing; Exeter High School; the Scottish Rite Cathedral in West Reading; and the Santander Performing Arts Center, the Miller Center, and the WCR Center for the Arts, all in Reading. A series of performances featuring popular local artists will be held on the grounds at The Gables at Stirling Guest Hotel in Reading every evening from Aug. 15 through 19. Ticketed outdoor concerts, as of mid-spring, were afforded 50 percent capacity by the state, Kerber says. Indoor performance audience capacity was still at 25 percent. “That’s where the challenge is,” she says. “We couldn’t put on any at this point.” Still the jazz fest is forging forward and all signs seem to point to continuing openings and relaxation of capacity sizes. She notes a conversation from an arts supporter who characterized the struggle and the shut downs of the past year-plus as creating “an empty hole” in their lives. That hole filled only partially by virtual performances and art and museum tours. The fiscal hole for artists is even bigger, with very little to no government assistance being made available. To add insult to pandemic injury, many artists and performers hold full- or part-time jobs in the hospitality industry that was also devastated by the pandemic. “This has been one of the longest, hardest hits in memory,” she says. “As things open up, it’s important to support the arts and the talents behind them.” For more info on events, check out berksarts.org and berksjazzfest.com.

“YES, THE BERKS JAZZ FEST IS BACK — AND IT WILL BE HOTTER THAN EVER!” FRIDAYS IN

THE PARK

Among the most popular and venerable of summer entertainment traditions is the Berks Arts-sponsored Bandshell Concert Series in Reading’s historic City Park. “This year we will once again attempt to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Bandshell Concert Series,” says Meggan Kerber, outgoing executive director of Berks Arts. “We’ll be doing four concerts in July, the first on the ninth and the last on the 30th.” Kerber, now an administrator at Alvernia University, says the concerts, while featuring musicians of note beyond Berks, will begin with warm-up performances by local artists (learn more on page 8). The Friday evening concerts, all of which start at 7pm with pre-shows at 6pm, are dependent on the city providing permits for group gatherings. However, Kerber was confident the nature of the concert series – being out in the natural surrounds of City Park – would make the permitting process go forward. “We will, of course, be following CDC guidelines” she says. Ironically, Kerber notes, social distancing has always been a part of the experience. “For 30 years, people have pretty much socially distanced – bringing their own chairs and blankets, sitting in what we now call pods with their friends and family and, often, bringing their own food and drink,” she says. The expansiveness of the bandshell stage is not only important for the performers, but critical to support personnel, providing ample distancing. The “moat” as Kerber calls it, or the lily pond fronting the bandshell, also provides a natural safety barrier between performers and the audience. “The artists won’t need to wear masks,” she says. “Their projection (exhalations) won’t reach the audience.” For attendees not bringing their own treats, food trucks on the northeastern perimeter of the park will offer a diversity of appetizing choices.

ARTFULLY ACTIVE ACROSS THE BRIDGE

Mark Ratcliffe, West Reading Main Street Manager, is a man whose career has intertwined with the arts. And now, as his organization helps sustain the borough’s renaissance, the arts remain a pivotal economic driver. In May, the borough held its annual Craft Pretzel and Beer Fest. Unlike other years when the event’s vendors and nearly 10,000 attendees filled a closed-for-the-day Penn Avenue, this year it was a sidewalk-based fest with emphasis on the businesses along the street. The popular beer tasting was limited to 140 people, half the usual attendance. Unique Pretzels was the major sponsor.

“WE BELIEVE ART AND HISTORY ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO REVITALIZATION.”

“We feature live music, but there were no additional vendors,” he says. “Our advertising was decidedly as low key as possible. There are so many people who know about it; they’ll be there.” Ratcliffe expressed hopes that the annual Art on the Avenue in June would be another success as more of the population is vaccinated and the outdoor venue is safer. As the seasons progress, Ratcliffe notes the French Fry Festival sponsored by the West Reading Tavern in August, the popular Pumpkin Carving in October, and the Ice and Spice Festival in the winter. The Fall Fest, set for Sept. 18, is art centric, he says, featuring plein air events, a beer garden, kids’ activities and live entertainment. The Art Plus Gallery is a major sponsor. While many of the West Reading businesses have an artistic component and a few closed in 2020, a lot more – 21 to be exact – have opened since Jan. 1, 2020. Many of these new enterprises are owned and operated by entrepreneurs aged 40 and younger, adding to the hipster vibe of the borough. Ratcliffe says the borough will be re-branding itself this year, emphasizing the arts, entertainment and healthy living. The new branding will replace the “Love West Reading” brand from the past decade-plus. Part of the effort includes creating a new pocket park off Sixth Avenue immediately north of Penn.

He’s hoping this marketing change will energize more art in West Reading, including sculpture, light displays, murals and traffic-calming art at the busy crosswalks.

MULLING

MURALS

For those who like to marry movement with art, the borough boasts a walking tour of “mural corridor” that showcases more than 40 pieces. The catalyst behind this was Dean Rohrbach, the late Elm Street manager. The artist Mike Miller, a Wyomissing High School teacher, has played a pivotal role in their creation. Many of the murals are located along the alley running parallel to the south of Penn Avenue that has been ceremonially named “Dean’s Way.” Ratcliffe says there is a mural link on visitwestreading.com. Most murals have QR codes available to smart phone users. The code unlocks info about the individual murals and words about and from the artists themselves. Miller, in an exchange program with Reutlingen, Germany, Reading’s sister city, had panels of eight pretzel paintings each installed

last October on the north side of the state office building at 645 Cherry St. More will be added courtesy of German art students. He did this, working with Berks Community Murals, a community-oriented collaborative public arts effort. In Reutlingen, more than 80 pretzel paintings by Berks artist Josh Brightbill were featured in that city’s annual street festival in 2019. In addition, there are original art works on public displays in downtown garages, courtesy of the Reading Parking Authority. Deena Kerschner, executive director of the Our Town Foundation in Hamburg, concurs that public art is a community stimulus. “We have four large murals, all reflecting themes relating to Hamburg’s history,” she says. “We believe art and history are very important to revitalization.”

HAMBURG

The borough also boasts the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum at 500 S. Third St., a fascinating collection of railroad cars and memorabilia, and a mural on its wall. Nearby, at Third and Grand streets, Bill Rhodes has created a fascinating sculpture garden in his yard. It is as awe-inspiring illuminated at night as it is in daytime for those walking or driving by.

HISTORICAL DELIGHTS MUSIC

The Hamburg Art Alliance was formed in 2006, but it wasn’t until 2015 that the first mural was completed. The next three followed annually through 2018. Part of the funding was made available through the Berks County Community Foundation. A walking tour pamphlet is available, but pending being posted online. A mural at the back wall of the community garden at Apple Alley and Windsor Street received funding from the AARP, she says. Kerschner, the town’s Main Street manager for 18 years, is among the longest serving in the commonwealth where the average term for a person in that position is 2.5 years. Her roots in the borough run deep: her grandmother was the owner of the iconic Doris Berry Shoppe on S. Fourth Street. The annual Hamburger Festival, which showcases artists and live performances, draws tens of thousands to the borough in normal times, and just got the go-ahead for a 2021 edition. Look for it downtown on Sept. 4 from 10am to 6pm. The borough may also be hosting some concerts in the park. The Strand Theatre was up and running beginning in May with first-run and classic films. The theatre is part of a string of notable structures downtown that has earned the designation of a National Historic District for architecture. The circa 1904 borough library was the first in Berks to be built with philanthropist Andrew Carnegie funding.

FOR KIDS’ SAKES

Over in western Berks, the summer concert series in August and September will return at Bethany Children’s Home on the campus at 1863 Bethany Rd., Womelsdorf. “This year, we have four concerts scheduled,” says Carolyn Shultz Spano, director of development. “We will be following any COVID guidelines in place at that time.” Spano and Dana L. Hoffman, marketing and events specialist, say the following are scheduled: Aug. 6 – The Uptown Band; Aug. 27 – Stephanie Grace; Sept. 10 – Jeff Krick Jr., Elvis Tribute artist; and Sept. 25 – the Ringgold Band. The first three concerts get under way at 7pm, while the final concert starts at 1pm. “Each concert will feature art exhibits by Bethany youth,” says Spano. “We will have Bethany items for sale, including artwork, memorabilia and more.” There is a suggested donation of $5 per car. Food trucks will be available for concertgoers to enjoy a meal or snacks. Prior to 2020, the Antietam Valley Community Partnership hosted its Annual Carsonia Craft Beer & Wine Amusement in the autumn. As of midspring, plans were not yet announced for a 2021 event. BERKS ORAL SURGERY BERKS ORAL SURGERY DENTAL IMPLANT FACTS: Dental implants are the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or sacrificing adjacent teeth to be used as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements that your oral & maxillofacial surgeon surgically places in the jaw bone. Dental implants are the most natural, stable and permanent option for replacing missing teeth.

Our practice has more experience in the placement of dental implants than any other in Berks. We are the only practice in the area with Robotic-Assisted Dental Implant Placement capabilities. Our surgeons regularly train other surgeons and surgical residents throughout the US in the proper usage and placement of dental implants. While dental implant placement is a surgical procedure, it is routine in our office due to the extensive amount of training our surgeons have received.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS

As oral surgeons, our doctors have completed an additional 4 years of hospital based surgical training and are all board certified. Although these procedures are many times regarded as minor, they take a high degree of skill, experience, and knowledge to perform well. We believe that your implant surgery should only be managed by those who have successfully completed this advanced level of education and surgical experience. special advertising section

NEW TEETH TODAY

Berks Oral Surgery is the EXCLUSIVE SURGICAL PROVIDER of NEW TEETH TODAY in Berks County and beyond. In a single appointment, the New Teeth Today process provides patients the opportunity to have failing teeth removed, dental implants placed and non-removable teeth inserted. This is done and coordinated with your regular dental provider, or we can arrange to have your teeth provided by one of our dental partners in the area. The New Teeth Today procedure has been performed hundreds of times in our office with tremendous success. Many patients who have had this procedure performed were told elsewhere that they were not candidates for dental implants, or that they needed dentures to replace their teeth. We have perfected ways to predictably place implants in nearly any situation, allowing patients the opportunity to have this lifechanging procedure.

DINING OUT

CHILEAN SEA BASS

TOGETHER AGAIN — AT MAZI!

Greek-Inspired Cuisine BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS | PHOTOS BY HEIDI REUTER

G

eorge and Eleny Zeppos have done it again. Their fine-dining gem, Mazi, sparkles like water dancing brightly on the Mediterranean Sea. Located right in West Reading — with whitelinen topped tables both outdoors and indoors — this Greek-themed New American Cuisine restaurant adds an elegant-yet-comfortable vibe to complement Penn Avenue’s lovely stores, unique boutiques and appealing gathering spaces. Its name is pronounced Mah-zee, with an accent on the “zee.” “Mazi means together in Greek,” explains George. It’s the feeling of togetherness that he and Eleny hope to impart with this particular dining experience, reinforcing the long-valued Greek tradition of sharing the love of family and community through delicious food and drink. The menu is focused on ingenuity, with modern offerings and

presentations that clearly draw flavors and directives from the Greek islands’ own combinations of herbs, goat and sheep cheeses, fruits like lemons and figs — all of which emerge in various marinades and sauces to enhance fish and shellfish, meats like veal and chicken, pasta and vegetables. The sea’s harvest yields numerous tasty specialties. Hungry for a crispy Calamari appetizer? It’s here. How about Ouzo Mussels? What a great idea. And try the Octopodi as well, an item specially charcoal grilled and accompanied by red pepper hummus and shishito peppers. Another savory appetizer not to be missed is the Saganaki, fried sheep cheese that’s thin-sliced and tender-chewy, rich on the tongue and so delightful with a tart lemon-brandy sauce. Pita bread accompanies this dish, and while it’s technically one serving, it can easily be shared.

SPINACH SALAD

Summery Drinks and Salads

The Medusa! Do try this feisty mythologyinspired cocktail invented by bartender Amanda. This might well be the most refreshing drink on the planet. It says cool, cool, cool all the way down — yet slides in a final, teeny punch of heat, thanks to the peppercorns and liquor swirling about. This creation is made with infused gin, featuring cucumber flavor with artfully visual slices of cukes mindful of the classic Medusa’s snaky hair; plus dill, peppercorn, lemon, St. Germain liqueur and tonic. Why have a gin and tonic when the Medusa’s in town? (Note: The bar uses eco-friendly straws. How savvy.) Naturally, the extensive wine lists, Scotch choices and numerous other libations at Mazi reflect the Zeppos’ selective hand, with considerable options for pairing with your entrée. Once again, that tradition of enjoying one’s dinner to the fullest and finest culinary level is evident here. A Village Classic Greek Salad is always enticing, but so is Mazi’s Fig Salad made with field greens, Kasseri cheese, fig compote, prosciutto di parma and a honey-balsamic vinaigrette. But then there is a Spinach Salad that sings like a siren-song to anyone who is accustomed to and loves the superfamous baked dish called Spanakopita (spinach and feta cheese pie). This salad dish is a deconstructed Spanakopita, a gorgeous plate where spinach leaves lift up, dotted with small chunks of fresh feta cheese, and adorned with curly pages of crispy, fragile phyllo! So delicate and tasty, and with all the flavors of spinach pie in a fun, healthy construction.

Swoon over Chilean Sea Bass, Mediterranean Shrimp Pasta

If you yearn for generous, pure white forkfuls of tender sea bass, the entrée decision is simple. Chilean Sea Bass is placed in soft, multicolored pebbles of deliciously herbed couscous, along with a touch of spinach, and ringed by a roasted red pepper, gorgeous in color with a tangy-sweet effect. The filet itself is centered like a king, full-flavored and delicately meaty, with a gentle touch of char-grill on the top side. To satisfy your shellfish obsession, look to Mussels Pappardelle or perhaps the Mediterranean Shrimp Pasta, where lemon white wine is tossed over juicy, sauteed shrimp, and the pasta enjoys the true Mediterranean garden treatment with artichokes, capers, olives, spinach and tomatoes. In addition to offering Spanakopita made with the family recipe, Mazi’s menu also lists charcoal-grilled Lamb Chops and slowly braised Lamb Shank Yvetsi. The Laconia Chop (prime veal) is an outstanding favorite with patrons; the meat is grilled and marinated with garlic, butter and thyme, roasted peppers and olive oil, served atop feta orzo.

THE MEDUSA

From Souvlaki to Baklava

Steak lovers will find the Souvlaki extremely satisfying, as it presents thick morsels of filet fused with the taste of three different varieties of grilled peppers, onions and other vegetables — all imbued with spices and herbs and ladolemano (lemon and olive oil sauce). Flanking the meat is a long, low hill of luscious, hand-cut potato fries, while a light sprinkling of feta cheese dusts the whole plate. As for dessert… “I highly recommend the baklava,” says George, smiling. “My mother makes it.” Talk about authentic and delicious in the same breath! The homemade honeyed confection leaves such a sweet taste in your mouth, a perfect ending to a fantastic experience. 
