The Challenges of Off-Road Vehicles
By Zongxuan Sun, Director, Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power» OFF-ROAD VEHICLES, including construction machines and agriculture equipment, account for about 8% of total transportation energy consumption. Offroad mobile equipment is also a significant sector of the national and global economy and has a critical impact on infrastructure and agriculture. Due to its power density, flexibility, and durability, fluid power is widely used in off-road vehicles for both working and driving functions. Given the global challenges of energy consumption, emissions, and environmental impact, many researchers have proposed electrification and automation to improve efficiency and productivity as well as introducing renewable energy sources to the off-road segment.
Unlike on-road vehicles, off-road vehicles often have driving and working functions. Many off-road vehicles employ a diesel engine as their prime mover. For the driving function, various transmission technologies have been used, including automatic, hydrostatic, and hydromechanical transmissions. For the working function, an engine-driven pump supplies highpressure fluid to hydraulic cylinders and motors. Human operators often control off-road vehicles. The operator has to control both the driving and working functions simultaneously, which makes the work difficult and exhausting. A key challenge for off-road vehicle control, then, is to deal with uncertainties at the worksite. For example, the resisting force during the scooping process can vary significantly due to different types of materials. Overall, off-road vehicles have complex powertrain systems and perform difficult tasks within an uncertain environment.
Electricity is an energy carrier, not an energy source. A key advantage of an electrical system is that electricity can be produced from various sources, including renewable ones. Electrification offers a pathway to introduce renewable energy into this segment with high efficiency. However, electrification for off-road vehicles needs to address several critical technical challenges, and one is the requirements of battery energy density and power density. The weight of the vehicle is crucial to its performance, as well as the ability for quick recharge and discharge.
A second challenge is the integration of the electrical drive with fluid power technology. For off-road vehicles, the working function often
requires linear motion. Hydraulic cylinders are ideal for such motion with their force density, load-holding capability, and durability. Integrating electrical motors with hydraulic pumps and cylinders is needed. Electrohydraulic actuators (EHA) are such an example.
A third technical challenge in the electrification of off-road vehicles is control of the EHA system. The working function often faces sudden and large force transients due to varying environments, making the motion control of the EHA system for offroad vehicles challenging.
Automation can not only save energy but also improve productivity. Better coordination of the driving and working functions in real time can make off-road vehicles do more with less. Automation can come at different levels. Driver-assist systems can be deployed to reduce the stress on the driver and improve efficiency and productivity. Partial automation can automate the driving or working function alone. Full automation will enable the complete control of the vehicle. Automation for off-road vehicles requires real-time sensing, control, and optimization. Sensing is necessary for the vehicle to understand its own location and the states of its actuators. Optimization is needed to design the optimal trajectories for both vehicle driving and working-tool motion so that the total energy consumption is minimal. Real-time control is required to ensure the vehicle follows the optimal trajectories and makes adjustment when necessary within an uncertain environment.
It is exciting to consider the benefits and new capabilities that electrification and automation can bring to off-road vehicles. To achieve those benefits, collaboration among industry, academia, and government is required. The Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power has been conducting stateof-the-art research for off-road vehicles. Skill sets from multiple disciplines, including power generation, energy conversion, fluid power, system modeling, sensing, and control, have been developed. The education of the next generation of researchers and engineers for off-road vehicles will ensure the continued success of this industry.

By Erine Parker, CFPAI, CFPSD, CFPS, CFPMM, CFPMT, CFPMIP, CFPMMH, CFPMIH, CFPE» CALCULATE THE TORQUE and the rpm for the ½ hp (.37 kw) air motor turning at 1,000 rpm.
Solution to
the February 2022 problem:
Comparing the Energy of Natural Gas and Gasoline
Natural gas
P1V1 = P₂V₂
14.7 x 1 = 3014.7 x V₂ V₂ = .004876 (volume of 1 cubic foot of gas when compressed to 3,000 psi [207 bar]) 1 / .004876 = 205.08163 SCF are compressed into 1 cubic foot container 205.08163 x 1000 BTUs/SCF = 205,081.63 BTUs/SFC
Gasoline
1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons 7.48 x 125,000 = 935,000 BTUs 935,000/205,082 = 4.56 times as much energy.
Notes
1.You would have to pressurize a container to 13,747 psi (948 bar) to get the same energy as gasoline.
2. Gasoline will vary in BTUs depending on the season. The vapor pressure is lower in cold weather for easier starting, but you will lose some miles per gallon.

CASE STUDY Reducing Contamination in a Hydraulic Grinder
By Otto G. Knottnerus , President, Harvard CorporationAMidwestern engine manufacturer was experiencing high contamination levels in the hydraulic oil of a hydraulically driven grinder. The company has several of these high-precision grinders that allow them to meet very demanding standards where tolerances must be within ten thousandths of an inch. To meet these tolerances, precision servo valves must be used to control the hydraulic actuators. These valves are extremely sensitive to contamination, so maintaining a high level of cleanliness is critical to accurate machining.
The company prides itself on making high-quality products, and it was clear that the contamination issue had to be addressed. Changing the oil only provided temporary relief. Replacing the high-pressure filters every seven to ten days – at $420 each – was not able to maintain the necessary ISO cleanliness standards for the servo valves. The situation demanded action.
The company considered shutting down the machines to completely flush the hydraulic system. This would mean extended downtime, the purchase of flushing fluids, along with the cost of new oil. This option was not acceptable. Further research indicated that the system needed improved filtration to keep the oil contamination levels at the ISO code of 17/15/12 as recommended by the servo valve manufacturer.
The company decided to try one Harvard teeframe kidney loop system for a 60-day evaluation period. As the chart on the next page shows, the oil was cleaned to a level that exceeded the ISO standard. This did not require any downtime, and all the oil was cleaned without needing to change the Harvard filters. Because
the hydraulic fluid stayed in service during the filtration process, the entire hydraulic system was cleaned of contamination. This included the cylinders, motors, and hoses along with the servo valves. The expensive, high-pressure filters did not need to be changed during this time, reducing downtime and material cost. The result was a reduction of 78% in the 4-micronsize material, the small silting contamination that is the principal cause of servo-valve failure. The dirt-holding capacity of the Harvard system extended the life of all the hydraulic system’s filters, including the high-pressure low-micron filters. The Harvard system achieved a cleanliness level of ISO 15/14/10 and provided the customer with a return on investment in less than six months.
After the test demonstrated the performance of the Harvard system, the company outfitted five other companion machines with it. An additional benefit is that the Harvard filters can be changed without interrupting production.
Oil contamination control with a Harvard kidney loop system resulted in savings for the company in several ways. It eliminated costly
servo valve failures. It reduced the cost of replacing the high-pressure filters by allowing them to last 6 to 10 times longer. It reduced unscheduled downtime and, consequently,
increased production uptime. The service life of the oil increased, which reduced the cost of oil changes. There was also a reduction in the cost of labor for maintenance.

GROUND CONTROL ELECTROHYDRAULIC PRECISION IN MOBILE MACHINES
Today’s construction, agriculture, and material-handling machines look very different from machines of 20 years ago – not only aesthetically and ergonomically, but also under the hood. While manufacturers are innovating better ways to provide a more comfortable and productive machine for their customers – such as higher quality seats, climate control, and reduced noise and vibration – they are also moving forward with greater integration of electronics and electrohydraulic systems. But while electronic controls enable today’s mobile machines to operate with more efficiency, safety, and autonomy, some systems still don’t deliver the response and predictable control of manual operation or piloted joysticks. What is
needed are control systems that provide the efficiency and precision of electrohydraulics without sacrificing the responsive “feel” that operators desire. Let’s look at some of the issues and solutions. Manual control. Straightforward manual hydraulic controls have long been used in construction machines. Using them requires a high degree of familiarity with the machine and its operating characteristics. The speed and quality of the work they can achieve depends much on the operator’s skill and finesse. When using manual hydraulic controls, the operator benefits from direct feedback and can adjust his or her approach to the work in real time.
Hydraulically piloted control. The development of smaller machines like skid-steer loaders, backhoes, and compact excavators drove a greater need for design flexibility, and hydraulically piloted control schemes became commonplace even in larger machines. With these types of controls, a lever or joystick and pilot valve in the cab operated the main control valve remotely by pilot pressure. Common complaints of the technology include:
• Poor accuracy and repeatability
• High hysteresis (commonly 10-25%)
• Inefficiency (due to pilot flow)
• Sluggishness in cold climates These drawbacks can make the technology less than user friendly.
Electrohydraulic control. As controls evolved, electrohydraulic (EH) control was widely adopted because it solved some – but not all – of the performance issues associated with hydraulically piloted control and allowed more sophisticated control schemes. Moving the piloting element to the main control valve simplifies plumbing, reduces potential leak points, and increases both efficiency and responsiveness. EH control enables features like:
• Tuning/deadband compensation
• Control ramping
• Load compensation
• Electronic self-leveling
• Return-to-dig
• Electronic cylinder cushion
But while EH control gave machine designers much more flexibility, operators still lamented the loss of feedback and responsiveness. At the root are two factors:
• The multistage control chain (operator input/electronic joystick/hydraulic pilot stage/main control spool). EH control relies on electro-proportional pressure control valves to pilot the operation of a spool in a monoblock or stack-valve configuration. But, like a child’s game of telephone, this can introduce multiple layers of hysteresis and lag.
• The lack of position feedback to close the control loop. While EH control does typically close the loop on control current in the pilot stage, correcting the coil current only addresses one-third of the potential error in the system, leaving it still open to variation.
Servo-mechanical EH control
Building on the successes of EH control, HydraForce engineers set out to improve operator experience by tackling the responsiveness and repeatability issues still present in the technology. The solution is a closed loop control that is based on position feedback.
HydraForce’s new EHPV90-G33 ElectroHydraulic Pilot Valve enhances EH control with a unique mechanical feedback mechanism. Now, the main control spool is mechanically connected to the pilot element – just like the operator’s hand is connected directly to the control lever with manual control. The feedback spring communicates the spool position to the pilot element – virtually eliminating hysteresis and deadband. This configuration achieves flow-force correction of the piloted spool and allows both ends to remain pressurized – stiffening the system and improving stroke response. The result is a control system that is significantly more responsive and predictable across all operating
environments and requires far less tuning from machine to machine. With hysteresis below 3% and response of 65 milliseconds, EHPV performs favorably even when compared to EH valves with LVDT position sensing.
The precision, response, and accuracy of a servo-mechanical control system makes it ideal for applications with quickly changing commands, such as automated (requiring a degree of operator intervention) and autonomous machines.
Repetitive motion such as boom-raise-and-lower, leveling of forks and buckets, and bucket shaking – all of which typically require the attention of a skilled operator – can be automated. With a reliable servomechanical control, functions such as return-to-dig, auto level, and electronic cylinder cushion can also easily be programmed.
System integration
To take things even further, telematics and remote access can be integrated into the system architecture, allowing functions to be engaged or disengaged remotely. Connected devices could allow equipment dealers to keep less inventory and give them the flexibility to upsell advanced functions without changing hardware.
Operational parameters can be adjusted for safer job sites such as load limiting, limiting elevation while loaded, and even slowing the vehicle speed when approaching obstacles in the worksite. Vehicle performance can be adjusted to match the experience level of the operator (novice or expert mode), potentially expanding the market for these machines, as more operators at various levels of experience feel more comfortable maneuvering the machine.
Of course, with the integrated telematics, data can be collected remotely and used to improve equipment maintenance, and technicians can diagnose problems and suggest solutions, many times without having to make a trip to the job site.
HydraForce has partnered with Epec Oy, of Finland, and Roquet Hydraulics, of Spain, to create this optimized servo-mechanical control system. The door is open for OEMs to step into a new world of machine performance and flexibility.

How a Hydraulic Cylinder Amplifies Its Fluid
By Robert Post, CFPHS, Hydraulic Designer, Sherman + ReillyThere are many parallels between electrical and hydraulic systems, but did you know hydraulic cylinders can act like amplifiers? There are two ways that a double-acting single-rod hydraulic cylinder can amplify the fluid that operates it, and designers can create systems to accommodate each of these very different amplifications.
There are many analogies that describe electrical and fluid power components. For example, switches are like valves and resistors are like orifices, but amplifiers are not mentioned. Electronic transistors are amplifiers used to raise the strength of a weak signal. However, in fluid power we may already have a strong signal. Raising the strength of an already strong signal can cause damage to components in other areas. How can you avoid these problems?
A ratio of areas
Starting with the basics, we know that pressure inside a cylinder is equal on all internal surfaces, as shown in figure 1. Pressure on the inside of the cylinder tube is important but not relevant in this article. Likewise, we’ll ignore pressure on the rod for the sake of this discussion.
Area rod side = A r =
Equation 3 can be simplified by combining constants, as in equation 2.
Area on the rod side of the piston = A r = (Bore2 - Rod2) x 0.7854
To determine the area ratio of a cylinder (AR), sometimes called the cylinder ratio, divide the area of the bore by the annular area. This number is always greater than one and can be very large for a cylinder with a large rod diameter.
Eq. 5
Area ratio = =
the rod removes some area (see figure 2). The remaining area is sometimes called the annular area and can be calculated as follows. Figure 1
In this article, focus is on the pressure acting on opposite sides of the piston, as shown in figure 2. Those pressures and areas are key for both types of amplification. More specifically, we are interested in the ratio of the areas on opposite sides of the cylinder piston.
Area on the base side of the piston Bore2 x 0.7854 Area on the rod side of the piston (Bore2 - Rod2) x 0.7854
The constant 0.7854 appears in the numerator and denominator and therefore cancels. This simplifies equation 5 to:
Figure 2
To determine the areas of concern, use the following equations.
Area base = ,where D = cylinder bore diameter 4 D2 x Pi
Pi divided by 4 = 0.7854
Eq. Eq. Eq. Eq. 2 4
Area on the base side of the piston = Bore2 x 0.785
Turning attention to the opposite side of the piston, we know that the surface area on the rod side of the piston is always less than the bore side because
Eq.
Example: Bore diameter = 4” Rod diameter = 2”
Area ratio = Area ratio =
Flow amplification
Bore2 4"2 100 mm 2 6 1
Example: Bore diameter = 100 mm Rod diameter = 50 mm
4 (D2 – d2) x Pi Eq.
= =
Bore2 - Rod2 4"2 —2"2 100 mm 2—50 mm 2
16—4 10,000—2,500
= 1.33 = 1.33
Note that area ratio is unitless and can be used to calculate flow and pressure amplification.
Double-acting single-rod hydraulic cylinders produce flow amplification when they retract because the volume of fluid in the base end is greater than the volume of fluid in the rod end. When the cylinder retracts, both sides of the piston move the same amount. So each unit of piston movement displaces a larger amount of fluid on the base side because the area is greater on that side of the piston. Base-port return flow can be considerably larger than the pump flow and should be considered when sizing return lines and selecting a return filter.
The area ratio results from equation 6 are used to calculate flow amplification. For a single-rod cylinder, flow from the base port is amplified by the area ratio.
Where: Q b = return flow from the base port
Q r = flow into the rod port
AR = area ratio
Example: Bore diameter = 4”
Rod diameter = 2”
Area ratio = 1.33
Flow into the retract port = Qr = 15 gpm
Q b = Qr x AR = 15 x 1.33 = 20 gpm
Example: Bore diameter = 100 mm
Rod diameter = 50 mm
Area ratio = 1.33
Flow into the retract port = Qr = 57 lpm
Q b = Q r x AR = 15 x 1.33 = 76 lpm
If the return filter was selected to match pump flow without considering flow amplification, internal bypass valves in the filter housing or element could open with every return stroke, allowing contaminants to avoid filtration and re-enter the system.
Likewise, undersized return lines increase pressure drop, diminishing the amount of work a cylinder can perform while retracting. Resistance to flow or back pressure on the base port decreases the cylinder retract force, which takes us to our next topic.
Pressure amplification
Area ratio is also used in another important aspect of hydraulic system design. Area ratio is mathematically related to pressure amplification, sometimes called pressure intensification, and can be used to an advantage, if that is the intention. Hydraulic intensifiers are often used in applications that require elevated pressures and small displacements, but they are beyond the scope of this article.
The fundamental concept of pressure amplification is based on the physics pertaining to equilibrium of the piston and rod. Forces on the base side must be balanced by forces on the rod side. We already know more force is available to extend the cylinder than retracting the same cylinder, given the same pressure on both sides. That is because there is more area on the base side of the piston than the rod side of the piston, as shown in figure 2. To remain in equilibrium and ignoring negligible levels of acceleration, the forces causing the cylinder to extend must be greater than the forces resisting the extension, or the piston does not move. Usually, the extending cylinder works against a force to do some work. But resistance in the flow of hydraulic fluid leaving the rod port increases pressure on the rod side of the piston, which adds to the force at the rod end. Therefore, increasing the pressure on the rod side of the piston diminishes the amount of work a cylinder can perform, but there are other potential consequences.
Consider what happens when extending a hydraulic cylinder as fluid enters the base port, advancing the piston, performing work, and simultaneously forcing fluid out of the rod port.
If the rod port has a significant flow restriction, for example from a flow control valve, pressure can increase potentially to dangerous levels, as shown below.
The amplified pressure in a rod port is easily calculated using the area ratio from equation 6.
P rod = P base x AR
Where:
P rod = pressure at the rod port
P base = pressure at the base port
Example:
Bore diameter = 4”
Rod diameter = 2”
Area ratio = 1.33
Pressure available to extend the cylinder is 2,900 psi
Rod port has a solenoid valve that did not actuate and remained closed
Medium-pressure hydraulic components and hoses are used
From Eq 8, P rod = 2,900 psi x 1.33 = 3,860 psi
Typical working pressure ratings for mediumpressure hydraulic components is 3,000 psi. Elevated pressure at the rod port has the potential for significant equipment damage or injury and must be avoided in every system design.
In pneumatics, flow controls are often used on rod ports of cylinders to control the speed of the piston. As the expression goes, “When in doubt, meter out,” but pneumatic systems can tolerate pressure amplifications, considering they begin with lower pressures. However, installing a flow control on a hydraulic cylinder rod port can cause pressure increases beyond rated levels, potentially causing damage or failure of a component.
Hydraulic directional control valves take pressure amplification into account. Careful study of directional control valves shows that the path to tank opens before the pressure port opens. Another hydraulic component sometimes used in a return line is the counterbalance valve, also known as an overcenter valve. These valves include a pilot circuit to open the path to tank similar to a relief valve to limit the pressures to acceptable levels.
Hydraulic system designers should consider cylinder amplification when selecting and sizing components. Ignoring area ratio calculations can cause flow problems in the return conductors and filters. Ignoring pressure amplification can have safety consequences, such as manifold cracks or hose failures.

The Pros and Cons of JIC Hydraulic Fittings
By Charles Kolstad, Marketing Manager, TamesonJICfittings, also called SAE J514 hydraulic fittings, play an essential role in everyday applications. They are used extensively in agricultural equipment, the construction industry, heavy machinery, automotive industries, and more.
The fittings stem from AN fittings, which were developed by Parker then developed further by the U.S. military around the time of World War II. Developed by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy (hence “AN” in the name) for use in aviation applications, then further developed to high 3A/3B thread-class performance standards and tolerances, the popularity of the fittings quickly took off.
This article explores the origins, uses, and the pros and cons of JIC fittings and compares them to AN fittings.
In the aftermath of the World War II, many AN flared-fitting designs and specifications hit the market and caused confusion on which standard should be used where. Manufacturers need a specific standard.
The Joint Industry Conference standardized the AN design with a 2A/2B thread class to make manufacturing easier. The fitting became known as the JIC fitting. It delivered high performance at lower cost and a simpler manufacturing process than the AN fitting of the 3A/3B thread class.
The conference wanted the fitting standard to have the same reputation as the standards of the Society for Automotive Engineers International. SAE International represents over 100,000 engineers and experts in the aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries.
The conference persuaded a committee of SAE engineers to accept the task, and they were instrumental in developing the standard. In 1950, the SAE standard 37° flare fitting was incorporated into SAE J514. ISO 8434, replaced by ISO 8434-2 in 1996, became an ISO standard for the fittings in 1986.
The majority of JIC hydraulic fittings are used in the agriculture, construction, mining, and automotive industries. Despite not meeting the high-performance standards of AN fittings, SAE 37° 2A/2B UN/UNF series threads are designed for optimum thread fit that balances manufacturing capabilities, convenience, economy, and fastener performance.
Differences between JIC and AN fittings
JIC and AN fittings have always been similar in design, function, and size. However, there are considerable differences between them. One of the significant differences is economics. Due to the design factors, AN fittings are considerably more expensive. The price difference comes from being manufactured to tight design tolerances. It is also considered uneconomical to use AN fittings where the application does not demand them. There are also other main differences.
Threads. On AN 37° flare fittings, male and female fittings are produced to class 3A/3B UNJ/UNJF with a radiused root thread. J screw threads are made with a root radius, improving the tensile stress area of the fastener. It also reduces the stress concentration in the thread. Besides offering better fatigue life, it makes the thread considerably stronger, besides offering the benefit of better fatigue life and tighter for military, aerospace, and aircraft applications.
During the production of SAE 37° flare fittings, the male and female threads are made according to class 2A/2B UN/UNF. These fastener classes are designed for optimum thread fit that balances manufacturing capabilities, convenience, economy, and fastener performance.
Military vs. industrial standards. The AN flare fittings conform to the MIL-F-5509 specifications and the SAE aerospace (AS) standard AS4841. Fittings manufactured under SAE/ISO 37° conform to U.S. Department of Defense MIL-F-18866 and SAE J514/ISO 8434-2 standards.
Materials. Because of where AN fittings are used, they are commonly made out of more metals or composites of costly materials. SAE 37° flared fittings or JIC fittings do not have this requirement and are often made of more standard materials. AN fittings are available in carbon steel, stainless steel (CRES), aluminum, titanium, and copper-nickel. SAE 37° fittings are commonly made out of carbon steel, stainless steel, and brass.
JIC 37° flare fittings design. AN 37° flare and industrial 37° flare fittings function, operate, and look identical. It is not surprising that these fittings are sometimes used interchangeably. The male JIC fitting connects to a 37° female flare fitting or flared tube. The fitting seals through a metal-to-metal seal between the flared tube or the nose of the female and the male fitting. The relatively small seal area makes for a compact design, while JIC fittings benefit from a low-assembly torque, high-temperature and high-pressure capability.
Thread classes
As previously mentioned, JIC fittings according to SAE J514 are designed and fabricated according to the 2A/2B thread fit. Thread fit combines the allowances and tolerances between the male and female threads or how they fit into each other. In essence, it is a measure of tightness or looseness between the two. There are six standard classes for unified inch threads:
• 1A / 2A / 3A: The thread fit class standard for external or male threads.
• 1B / 2B / 3B: The thread fit class standard for internal or female threads.
All six classes are clearance fits. As the male and female fittings are joined, they assemble without interference. As the number increases, the tolerances between the threads become tighter.
• Classes 1A and 1B are considered to have highly loose tolerances. Assembly and disassembly can be done quickly and easily with this class. It is rare to specify this thread fit other than low-carbon threaded rod and machine screws.
• Classes 2A and 2B offers a balance between fastener performance, production efficiency, and economy. This thread fit is used in almost all commercial and industrial fasteners.
• Classes 3A and 3B should be used when tight tolerances are required. Safety is a critical consideration in the design of these fasteners. These fittings have very tight tolerances and no allowances.
UN or UNJ Threads
In North America, the Unified Thread Standard specifies thread forms and series, allowances, tolerances, and designations for screw threads. It standardizes bolts, nuts, and other threaded fasteners. On unified screw threads, the flank angle is 30°, and the threads are symmetrical. For this reason, they are commonly referred to as 60° threads.
UNC, UNF, and UNEF threads are almost identical to UNJ, UNJC, UNJF, and UNJEF threads. The letter J indicates that these screw threads have a much greater root radius (UNJ, UNJC, UNJF, and UNJEF). As a result, the tensile stress area of the fastener is improved, and the stress concentration factor in the thread is reduced. This leads to a stronger thread. Thread tolerances 3A/3B are standard for UNJ threads. Bolts with a UNJ thread root have a gentler curve that requires a shallower thread root. Since the thread root is so shallow, it cannot mate with a UN nut, so a UNJ nut is also specified.
Pros and cons of JIC fittings
Flared fittings are significantly superior to pipe fittings in terms of design and performance. Flared fittings have long been used instead of pipe fittings for most hydraulic design applications. There are several advantages to using flared JIC or J514 fittings. These include a wide selection of flared fittings in accordance with SAE J514 and availability in a variety of sizes and shapes. Because they were produced to the SAE J514 standard, they can be interchanged with the same product groups produced by different manufacturers, as long as they have been produced to the same standard. Also, they are suited for high-temperature applications because they are not fitted with an O-ring.
There are, however, some disadvantages to using JIC fittings. Specific applications (such as high-vibration applications) have a lower pressure rating than is required. These seals have a metal-on-metal construction, so they are only suitable for hydraulic, liquid, and noncritical applications. The assembly of the 37° flare fittings can cause some nose collapse, which is made worse by over tightening. In turn, this causes a reduction in flow diameter.
Installing JIC fittings
JIC fittings should be installed using the flats-from-wrench-resistance method. This is a relatively simple way to check that the connection is torqued sufficiently without damaging the fit or thread. With the flats method, it is possible to eliminate the effects of plating, lubrication, and surface finishes on torque requirements.
Tighten JIC hose fittings properly with the following steps:
• Connect the female and male connectors and tighten with a wrench (about 30 lb. ft. or 3.39 Newton meter) until you feel a slight resistance. This resistance determines the wrench resistance point.
• With a permanent marker, mark this position on both the male and female fittings.
• Using a JIC fittings chart, tighten the nut further according to the number of flats. One flat is equal to 1/6 of a turn on a hexagonal tube nut.
• Once the nut has been tightened to the required number of flats, mark the female and male connections again. It will also serve as a secondary reference point to check the tightness of the connection over time and serve as a reminder to reconnect after maintenance.
Knowledge of which fittings to use in an application helps ensure that the application runs smoothly and can help save money.

HYDROSTATIC TRANSMISSIONS
The transmission of force through a contained hydraulic fluid (hydrostatics) will fall into one of two categories: open circuit or closed circuit.
An open circuit is simply one where a pump receives fluid from the reservoir and delivers power to an actuator with the actuator returning the fluid to the reservoir. This is the most common type of circuit and usually requires some directional control as well as some overpressure protection. The directional valve allows the motor to be driven in either direction, even though the pump is only rotating in one direction. An advantage of the open circuit is that a single pump can supply flow to multiple actuators, both linear and rotary (cylinders and motors).
A closed circuit is where a pump provides flow to an actuator (usually a motor) without the use of directional valves. The working fluid that is transmitting power is contained between the pump and the motor, and so the system is called a hydrostatic transmission. The ports of the pump are connected directly to the ports of the motor so that the flow from the pump drives the motor, and the discharge from the motor feeds the inlet to the pump. There may be additional valves that are included in the transmission package, but the main flow paths are between the pump and the motor. If the pump has an overcenter swashplate, the position of the swashplate determines which line is pressurized, along with the direction and speed of the motor.
The pump and motor may be combined in a common housing or connected by plumbing when the motor is at some distance from the pump. The transmission produces a speed-torque ratio equal to the ratio of the motor and pump displacements. The motor can be a high speed/low torque, or a low speed/high torque design. Fixed or variable displacement pumps and motors can be used to match the need of the application.
PUMP/MOTOR
Fixed
Constant Speed. Torque and power vary with the load.
Fixed Pump
Variable
Variable
Constant Power. Flow to the motor is constant, and motor displacement is varied to maintain the ratio of torque to speed. Increasing the displacement of the motor increases torque capability, but speed decreases in inverse proportion (and vice-versa) so that the product of the two is constant power, proportional to the load pressure.
Constant Torque. Torque capability is constant at any speed. Speed is a function of input flow.
Variable Power/Torque/Speed. Provides characteristics of both constant power and constant torque with nearly infinite ratios of both speed and torque to power.
Basic hydrostatic transmission arrangements.
There are several pump/motor arrangements (see figure 1) that are possible for a hydrostatic transmission, either as attached or separated.
Either working line may be pressurized, and so there are case drains on the pump and motor to prevent overpressurizing the respective cases. To resupply the drained fluid, a replenishing pump (charge pump) is added to the circuit to prevent cavitation, supply cooling flow, and provide pressure for actuating a control servo. The charge pump maintains a constant supply of fluid to the working lines at a pressure that is typically between 1.4 and 2.8 MPa (200 and 400 psi) and is set by the charge relief. Check valves are arranged so that the line with flow returning from the motor (the lower pressure line) will receive the make-up fluid.
Cooling fluid is supplied by way of a shuttle valve, often called a hot oil shuttle. This valve directs flow from the lower pressure working line to a flushing port on the pump and/or motor. This valve is illustrated in figure 2. The line with the higher pressure shifts the valve to direct low-pressure cooling fluid to exit port 3 and is typically directed over a shuttle relief valve set at some value below the setting of the charge pump relief valve. This ensures that all the charge pump flow is directed into the transmission loop on the low-pressure side. The exit flow from the shuttle relief may be directed directly to tank or through the case of the pump and/or motor and then to tank.
Cross-line relief valves may be included to prevent overpressure in the working lines. The fluid is relieved to the opposite (low-pressure) line. These relief valves provide for the dynamic braking of the motor.
Figure 2 illustrates the arrangement of the replenishing (charge) pump and additional valves that are often found on a hydrostatic transmission. These components may be piped in externally but are more often contained within the body of the pump and/or motor as illustrated in figure 3.
