Today, we are at the Fred A. Snyder American Legion Post 353 on Dewey Avenue in Northampton. Mr. Ronnie Guynn, of the Legion, is showing us some of their historical material for our research. The Legion Post was organized after World War I.

A group of World War I veterans held a meeting at the Odd Fellows Hall on Washington Avenue, now a parking lot of the Schisler Funeral Home. They applied for a charter which was granted in October 1919. The first Commander was S. Clyde Frankenfield, Principal of Northampton High School when it was located at 18th and Lincoln Avenue.

The Legion Post was named to honor Fred A. Snyder, a vet-

eran killed in action in World War I. The Legion was able to purchase a solid stone home on Main Street for the Post headquarters. Later, the building was the former Ellis Funeral Home. In 1921, an auxiliary was organized at the Post. The president of the auxiliary was Beatrice Santee. The auxiliary did admirable work in supporting the military during World War II.

In 1929 and 1939, the Legion hosted a large Armistice Day Celebration (today Veterans Day) with fellow Legionaries from other posts. The events were so successful, the members decided there was a need for a new headquarters.

Bethlehem Area VocationalTechnical School is no stranger to innovation. The school’s 1,300 high school students excel in 27 programs of study, from culinary and construction to healthcare and manufacturing. However, the school’s automotive technology program has gained national recognition over the past year as two talented students turned a vintage classic into a piece of cutting-edge technology.

“We are always innovating and trying new things,” said Supervisor of Career & Technical Programs Michael Galler. “And Adam Lazarchak [Executive Director] wanted to be the first at something.”

With the rise in popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), school administrators turned their atten-

tion to the automotive technology program. While other schools have had students work on EVs, BAVTS wanted to challenge their students to build one.

“We wanted to make a showpiece,” continued Galler. Faculty met with two California-based EV companies, includ-

State police investigate Route 22 car crash

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Troop M-Fogelsville Crime Unit is investigating an incident that occurred on Monday, Dec. 16. On Monday, Dec. 16 at approximately 11:30 a.m., troopers were advised of a suicidal male who was traveling into Pennsylvania from New Jersey. Troopers observed the male operating a BMW X-5, traveling westbound on Route 22 and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle fled from troopers.

Troopers pursued the BMW onto local roads and then back onto Route 22, where the fleeing vehicle crashed and caught fire on Route 22 westbound, at mile marker 316.7, in South Whitehall Township. The operator was ejected from the vehicle and was immediately treated at the scene by troopers for self-inflicted injuries to his body.

The operator was transported from the scene to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest for his injuries.

A new building was constructed on Dewey Avenue in 1940. The Post was located a few steps from the Memorial plot at 14th and Washington Avenue. The property was at one time part of the John Smith farm. Mr. Smith was a large landowner in the Borough of Northampton. A fundraiser made it possible to construct the building. It was built by Monroe Miller. Doctor Charles Haff, owner of the Haff Hospital, was a large contributor to the project.

The Legion Commander in 1940 was Harry S. Rehrig. One of the major contributions the Legions made to the borough and the area was the solicitation of funds for the borough’s first ambulance. The ambulance was housed in the municipal building on Main Street.

The Post had an outstanding drum and bugle corps. As a youth, this writer remembers the corps drilling on Monday nights. They would proudly march down Laubach Avenue while their music filled the air.

Each year, the Legion participates with other veteran organizations in a Memorial Day service at the Memorial plot. The site features a statue of a World War I “Doughboy,” army artil-

Directions

Creamy Mushroom Soup

Ingredients

4 tbsp. butter

1 1/2 lb. mushrooms, sliced

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 whole medium onion, diced

2 stalks celery, sliced thin

4 cloves garlic, minced

2 sprigs fresh thyme leaves

3 tbsp. flour

3/4 c. dry white wine or sherry

4 c. vegetable or chicken stock

1/2 c. heavy cream

2 tsp. balsamic vinegar

Chopped fresh parsley, for serving

Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a pot over medium-high heat. Add 1/3 of the mushrooms. Cook until dark golden brown, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, remove from the pot and set them aside.

In the same pot, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter. Reduce the heat to medium and add the rest of the mushrooms, along with the onion, celery and thyme. Cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are soft, about 5 to 6 minutes.

Sprinkle in the flour and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper and stir constantly for 3 minutes, allowing the flour to cook. Slowly add the wine or sherry, stirring while you add. Allow it to heat and bubble up for a couple of minutes, then slowly pour in the stock. Keep stirring to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove it from the heat and let it cool for 20 minutes. Transfer to a blender (make sure it is just warm or cool at this stage---blending hot soup is dangerous!) and puree until mushrooms are mostly broken up into small barley-sized bits. (NOTE: You may use an immersion blender in the pot if you have one, and you don't have to let the soup cool first.) Transfer the soup back to the pot, add the cream, and heat it to a simmer. Add balsamic, then taste and adjust seasonings.

Serve warm with reserved mushrooms on top and crusty bread.

If you have a recipe you’d like to share with our readers, email it to cstroh@homenewspa.com or mail to PO Box A, Walnutport, PA 18088.

ing Electric GT, to see how they could bring this project to life. The experts recommended that the school purchase a 1970s vehicle for their build to ensure “fewer headaches.” The perfect vehicle came along from a dealer in Coatesville: a 1970 Fiat 124 Spider in “excellent condition” for $8,000.

With the car in hand and the experts a phone call away, BAVTS needed to assemble the student team for what would be a multiyear project. The students would not only need to be dedicated to automotive technology but also confident public speakers who could present what would be a first-of-its-kind project to vehicle and technology fanatics alike.

BAVTS found their team in then-sophomores Spencer Parker and Braiden Binder, both students at Northampton Area High School.

The two automotive technology students, under the direction of instructor Jeff Cantrell, had the opportunity of a lifetime to work alongside GT’s mechanics, computer engineers, electrical engineers and more to gut the car’s engine and transform it into the EV of the future.

Installing the hardware took about eight to nine months. The students were employed by BAVTS the summer between their sophomore and junior years to take daily calls with GT engineers as the diagnostics, troubleshooting and installation took place.

“It was neat to see that interaction across the continent,” Galler said.

For Parker and Binder, the project was an opportunity to put their passion for automotive technology into action and discover what they’re truly capable of.

“This project [has given] me insight into how electric vehicles work and…has influenced me into becoming an automotive electrical installer,” said Parker.

Parker and Binder worked hands-on with concepts and technologies many engineers with years on the job have yet to work with. As a result, the project was not without its challenges. Both students cited the software instal-

lation as the most difficult part of the project.

“Trying to program the car and the fabrication to get everything to fit” was the biggest challenge, according to Binder.

But a little perseverance was all the duo needed to get the vehicle up and running.

“The biggest lesson I learned is to take your time and pay attention to what you are doing so you don’t have to do it twice,” continued Binder.

Added Parker: “One lesson I learned was to take my time and make sure that the work was to a higher standard and not to rush through things [just] to check them off the list.”

With the EV fully running by the beginning of their junior year, it was time to show it off. Parker and Binder traveled across the area, exhibiting their work at car shows like the Greater Lehigh Valley Auto Show. The response was strong, with mentions in various local media and requests to show the car off at other events.

“They do a knockout job,” Galler said of Parker’s and Binder’s presentations to the public.

Now, with the students in their senior year, Galler hopes to bring the three-year project to a close where it started: in California.

BAVTS is currently fundraising to send Parker and Binder to Electric GT in Huntington Beach, Calif., so they can meet the team they worked alongside and have built a relationship with over these last several years.

BAVTS hopes to raise $6,000 for the students’ travel. As of November, the school had already raised $3,400 thanks to generous donations from the public inspired by Parker’s and Binder’s hard work.

And what comes next? Galler said several buyers have been interested in adding the vehicle to their collection, but after three years of blood, sweat and tears, Galler said the team isn’t ready to part with the vehicle just yet.

“We are not ready to sell,” he said. “This is their [Parker’s and Binder’s] project.”

Perhaps in a few years, the school may sell the vehicle and use the proceeds to fund another automotive technology project.

Northampton Area Public Library Announces January events

Submitted by

We have a feeling at the Northampton Area Public Library that there will be a lot of changes in this new year. We've got our fingers crossed for good changes at the library and for everyone living in the Northampton Area School District.

If you received a new piece of technology this holiday season and you'd like to learn more about it, feel free to sign up for a tech tutoring time slot with one of our volunteers. To do so, you may visit our website, northamptonapl.org, call us at 610-2627537, or visit the help desk at the library. Please register at least a week in advance of your chosen time slot, so we can contact our volunteers to see if they can accommodate us. Our volunteers' time is precious, and they only come in when we confirm appointments with them in advance. Once our volunteers are confirmed, we will call to let you know that you are confirmed for your time with them. Bringing you tech tutoring is only part of our information literacy initiative for 2025.

We're chock full of kid's programs this January. Early Literacy Storytimes will begin again on Tuesday, Jan. 14 with Lapsit Storytime at 10:30 a.m. and will continue weekly throughout the month. Grades 3-5 clubs will

continue as well with Game Club at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9 and STEAM Club at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16. Grades K-2 Storycraft is back, beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23.

Last but not least, join our Family Story Hour at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27 to read, sing and craft about the Lunar New Year with the library director.

Teens have a lighter month with finals and the change of semesters. Make sure to register to make your own whipped peppermint lotion at home with the supplies and help of Mayzi's teen craft kit. It's important to take care of all your skin in winter; after all, it is our biggest organ! Kits can now be picked up. Adults, I know this sounds good to you too, but please leave this one for the teens, please!

Despite being deprived of whipped peppermint lotion, we've not forgotten about you, adults! In fact, we've doubled down on crafting for the year. For Adult Craft Hour, at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, we'll make watercolor snowflake suncatchers together. Please register, as the Community Room can only fit so many people. For more crafting fun, bring your latest craft to the library the next day, Tuesday, Jan. 14, to join us for Stitch & Craft. We encourage our crafters to be social and pull their heads out of their yarn every now and

then at 6 p.m. Our beloved Deb will always have our backs with snacks of one sort or the other.

Aside from crafting and tech tutoring, the Well-Read, BadlyBehaved (we have dessert and snacks) Book Club will be meeting to discuss "The Reading List" by Sara Nisha Adams on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Please choose the time that works best for you and know that we try to wrap up the 1:30 session by 2:30, so you can get out before the schools do.

Once Upon a Crime's topic this January is serial killers. We will be meeting once again on Monday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room. Lily has a specific serial killer she's looking into in order to start the discussion, but please feel free to bring a serial killer of your own to discuss. Please note that Once Upon a Crime is strictly for adults 19 and older. If you are sensitive to discussions of violence or crime scene photos, please do not attend.

Please note that the library will be closed on Jan. 20 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In honor of Dr. King's peaceful protests to strive for the best for the downtrodden, why not spend an hour or two helping out at a local food bank or soup kitchen, or make a donation (it doesn't have to be large) to a local non-profit? Every small, peaceful act for change can make large ripples in our community.

GOOD NEWS JAR

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

1 large jar

Small, colorful pieces of paper

A pen or marker

INSTRUCTIONS

This one is very simple! This January, start your year with an empty jar.

Each day or each week, write down on a piece of paper something good that happened to you (or even something you are grateful for), then fold up your paper and place it in the jar.

Then on New Year’s Eve,

empty the jar and read about all the good things that happened throughout the year. It’s easy to forget about all the little things that made up the year!
