Heart Attack: Men Vs. Women

theheartfoundation.org

Men- Heart disease is one of the leading health risks facing men today. Many men are at high risk for developing heart disease. Only a quarter of the men in the US meet the federal guidelines for physical activity. As of 2015, approximately 34% of American men are obese. And about 20 percent of men smoke, which can cause the blood vessels to narrow. Narrowed blood vessels are a precursor to certain types of heart disease. Other risk factors include a diet high in saturated fat, alcohol abuse or excessive drinking, high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension). Heart Attack Signs in Men 1. Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. 2. It used to be thought that only chest pain was a sign of heart attack, but it’s possible to have discomfort that doesn’t register as painful. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. 4. Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or feeling lightheaded. Women-Most of what we know about diagnosis and treatment of heart disease comes from research done on middle-aged men. However, the disease is different in women. Women with heart disease may have different symptoms than men and tend to have heart attacks later in life. Symptoms of heart disease in women might be attributed to existing conditions, like arthritis or diabetes. Such problems as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes may make surgery a riskier proposition for them. Heart Attack Signs in Women 1. As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or an uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. 2. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. 3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. 4. Other common symptoms in women include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea/vomiting, or feeling lightheaded, palpitations; sleep disturbances and unexplained fatigue.

10 Effective Ways to

Lower Your Blood Pressure

Healthline.com 1. Increase activity and exercise- Aim for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 or more days a week. Exercise can lower your blood pressure by as much as five to 15 points. 2. Lose weight if you’re overweight- If you’re overweight, losing 5 to 10 pounds can reduce your blood pressure. Plus, you’ll lower your risk of other potential medical problems. 3. Cut back on sugar and refined carbohydrates. 4. Eat more potassium and less sodium and processed foods such as deli meats, canned soup, pizza, chips, etc. 5. Stop smoking and drink less alcohol. 6. Reduce excess stress. 7. Try meditation or yoga. 8. Eat dark chocolate- The dark chocolate should be 60 to 70 percent cacao. A review of studies on dark chocolate has found that eating one to two squares of dark chocolate per day may help lower the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure and inflammation. 9. Eat garlic or take garlic extract supplements. 10. Consider cutting back on caffeine.

Inflammation Healthline.com

Inflammation happens in everyone, whether you’re aware of it or not. Your immune system creates inflammation to protect the body from infection, injury, or disease. There are many things you wouldn’t be able to heal from without inflammation. Sometimes with autoimmune diseases, like certain types of arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, your immune system attacks healthy cells. Inflammation is classified into two main types: Acute inflammation usually occurs for a short (yet often severe) duration. It often resolves in two weeks or less. Symptoms appear quickly. This type restores your body to its state before injury or illness. Chronic inflammation is a slower and generally less severe form of inflammation. It typically lasts longer than six weeks. It can occur even when there’s no injury, and it doesn’t always end when the illness or injury is healed. Chronic inflammation has been linked to autoimmune disorders and even prolonged stress.

WALK A HOUND, LOSE A POUND!

Walking a pet benefits both you and your pet’s health

Long-term inflammation can lead to a number of symptoms and affect your body in many ways. Common symptoms of chronic inflammation can include: Body pain, constant fatigue and insomnia, depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, gastrointestinal issues, like constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux, weight gain and frequent infections. In some autoimmune conditions, your immune system affects your skin, leading to rashes. In other types, it attacks specific glands, which affect hormone levels in the body. Many factors can lead to inflammation, such as: Chronic and acute conditions, certain medications, exposure to irritants or foreign materials your body can’t easily eliminate. Recurrent episodes of acute inflammation can also lead to a chronic inflammatory response. Foods that may cause or worsen inflammation in people with autoimmune disorders: Sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, processed meats and trans fats.

Easy Swaps That Will Make Your Meals

Healthier

Employ these tiny diet tweaks that add up to a major difference. Eatthis.com

1. Replace sweetened oatmeal packets with rolled oats or overnight oats- Generally speaking, instant, flavored oatmeal is a chemical and calorie landmine—and one that’s been stripped of its wholesome nutrients. To dial back on the excess sugar and additives, use rolled oats instead. 2. Replace granola with nuts- While granola may seem like an innocent yogurt topper, it’s almost always loaded with added sugar. To get the crunch you crave without the extra calories and sugar, top your yogurt with some nuts instead. 3. Replace ice cream with “nice” cream- “Nice cream”—a creamy dessert that resembles ice cream but is made entirely with frozen bananas and any added toppings—is the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth.

4. Swap cookies for energy balls-- Recipe on page 10. 5. Replace jam with smashed avocado- Instead of your go-to fruit spread (which is often filled with added sugar), mash half an avocado on top of your toast, drizzle with some lemon juice, and top it off with a slice of tomato. The green fruit’s fiber and cholesterol-lowering monounsaturated healthy fats will keep you full and satisfied well into the afternoon. 6. Replace creamy soup with chili- Choose recipes and cans that rely on pureed, vegetable, chicken broth, or meat and beans as a base instead of cream-based. 7. Replace mayo with hummus. 8. Swap candy for homemade chocolate trail mix- This ensures you’ll have a snack teaming with whole grains, protein, fiber, healthy fats, and chocolate (!) whenever hunger strikes.
