Health vs. Wellness
www.differencebetween.net he term “health” is easily mistaken for “wellness” in the sense that many are still using these two non-synonymous words interchangeably. This comes as no surprise because the word “health” was defined in the past as simply the absence of disease, which is now very related to the present-day definition of wellness. Moreover, being healthy and being well (two different adjectives) are accepted as the same, which add to the confusion. The primary difference between the two is that health is considered as a state of well being, while wellness is more on getting the most perfect balance of all the dimensions mentioned. Being in a state of well being, health is when you are free from disease so you are regarded as being in good health or you are healthy. Alternatively, when you try to perform daily exercises to promote your physical dimension and engage in healthy relationships or interactions to perk up your social dimension, then you are promoting wellness. Vitamins are good examples of products that promote wellness and also, to some extent, good health.

Sensory Deprivation Tanks Wellnessmama.com, galleryofinsight. wordpress.com, Wikipedia.org ou may be wondering what in the world a floating chamber is. An isolation tank, originally called a sensory deprivation tank (aka float tank, flotation tank or sensory attenuation tank) is a lightless, soundproof tank with high epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) content in which the participants float in salt water at skin temperature. They were first used by John C. Lilly in 1954 to test the effects of sensory deprivation. Lilly’s original question was, “What will happen to consciousness once all (or maximum) sensory input is removed?” In order to answer this question, the tank was designed to include the following features: -There is approximately 700-1000 pounds of salt in the tank, which causes the body to rise to the top and float effortlessly. -It is completely dark. -The water is warmed to body temperature so that it blurs the perception of any concrete border between the skin and the water. -Your ears are underwater and it is totally silent. So why is floating beneficial? The basic concept is that floating reduces external stimuli as much as possible to help the body achieve a natural restorative state. Some people compare the experience of floating to meditation or yoga. Floating has been used for a variety of reasons, both anecdotal and scientifically backed:

not otherwise feel they could benefit from a yoga practice. It is designed to fit the student as opposed to having the student fit the class, integrating the body, mind, and spirit through the introduction of the many facets of yoga, such as asana (poses), pranayama (breath and energy work), yoga nidra, mudra, affirmation, ayurvedic practices, and meditation. The yoga therapist may work with students coming out of acute phases of injury or illness, and in partnership with their clinical practitioner, to help them to heal, manage side effects or symptoms, reduce pain and physical or psychological stress, and potentially prevent any further issues or reinjury. Whether it be one-on-one, in a class or workshop designed for targeted health issues, or in a general therapeutic yoga group class, we can help students manage their condition and become educated in the practice and philosophy of yoga in a safe, structured environment under a certified practitioner. Our class would best address clients with any back or joint pain or spinal misalignments, muscular conditions (including fibromyalgia and other autoimmune conditions) and those managing heart disease and/or diabetes as well as general anxiety. More serious or chronic health conditions, including anxiety and depression, might require the focused workshops or private classes. At Soulful Journeys we have the distinct privilege of being able to merge the healing benefits of yoga and yoga therapy with massage therapy and energy healing, which can promote specific changes in muscles, joints, and organs that alter the vital functions of the body and ultimately one’s health.

Sensory Deprivation Tank Continued from Page 3 -Stress reduction -Anxiety relief -Sports recovery -Pain relief -To promote relaxation -Reduce headaches -Increased circulation -For more restful sleep -To learn to meditate Small-scale studies provide some initial scientific backing for the idea of floating and sensory deprivation. One study showed increased activity in the visual cortexes of participants while other studies found increased creativity in university professors and students (measured by standardized tests for creativity). A more detailed study in the 1980s found reduced levels of stress hormones and blood pressure after floating and noted that these effects were sustained for weeks after the actual REST experience. Bonus Benefit: Magnesium Pods and tanks for floating use an epsom salt (magnesium) solution to make the water extremely saturated. In fact, the water in a float tank has a
Page 5
relative density of about 1.25, making it essentially impossible not to float. Almost a thousand pounds of epsom salt is dissolved in a couple hundred gallons of water, creating an almost zero gravity environment. This allows anyone to be able to float effortlessly in the pods, plus the usual benefits of using magnesium on the skin or soaking in a magnesium bath apply. In particular, magnesium is known to help balance calcium levels in the body, reduce stress, balance hormones, normalize blood pressure, reduce risk of cancer and other diseases, and much more. Skepticism about Floating Any therapy has its skeptics and floating is no exception. Skeptics point out that all studies done on REST therapy used small groups of people, reducing the statistical significance. Additionally, it is difficult to know if the act of floating and partial sensory deprivation is to thank for the benefits of floating, or if these benefits are due to the magnesium or the 90 minutes of relaxation.

What are Essential Oils? submitted by JENNA MILLER hat are essential oils? That's the golden question. Essential oils are the lifeblood of plants. The oil protects the plant from the elements, pests and disease. They are so concentrated that one drop of peppermint essential oil equals 28 cups of peppermint tea in therapeutic strength. Of course, no one would drink 28 cups of tea at one time, but when you consider the benefit of the tea, it’s amazing what you can have with one drop of essential oil. Many have come to appreciate the pure and effective qualities of doTERRA essential oils. No other oil matches its strength or purity due to sourcing where the plant thrives naturally. The most stringent testing is conducted on each batch, providing a consistent product year after year. Each oil’s chemical make-up is complimentary to the needs our body has from time to time. Our body sees the oils as natural and non-threatening. The wonderful thing about these oils is that many of them have overlapping chemical properties; therefore, if you need them for something and one oil doesn’t help as expected, try another complimentary oil to receive the desired results. Of course oils do not replace a doctor’s care, but they can enhance your journey to better wellbeing. In addition, the oils are economical. Take doTERRA Lavender, for example, with 250-300 drops of oil in a 15 ml bottle. When you consider having to purchase separate products from the store for irritated skin, relaxation, calming emotions, and then consider these products expire, oftentimes before you even get to finish the container, these oils are very economical indeed. Among other things, lavender is soothing to the sting of a burn or scrape and eases the emotions all at the same time. So how would one use essential oils? There are three main ways: Aromatically: Inhale or use a diffuser or even a spritz bottle, what you breathe affects mood. It also cleans the air and supports breathing. Topically: Essential oils

are powerful. One drop of essential oil services every cell of your body. Apply to the bottoms of the feet, back of the ears, chest, back of neck, pulse points, or troubled areas. Applying to the bottom of the feet, the oil penetrates the blood stream within 30 seconds. For sensitivity, dilute with fractionated coconut oil. Water and oil do not mix, so water isn’t effective when your skin is feeling sensitive to an oil. There are a few “hot” oils… oregano is one of them, and can burn the skin, but when diluted, it doesn’t. Internally: It's as easy as adding a drop to water. You can also drip under the tongue or put into a gel capsule. Using oils internally nourishes the whole body including the digestive system, mouth, throat, liver and urogenital tract. As many prestigious universities around the country research the effectiveness of essential oils, doTERRA is the company of choice for the most consistent, purest products available. Soon everyone will be using essential oils. They are marvelous. Jenna Miller is a doTERRA Wellness Advocate, contact her for more information at 484-951-5583 or email jennakmiller@yahoo.com.
Benefits of Massage Therapy How Can Massage Therapy Be Medically Beneficial?
Massageenvy.com Relieves Stress Stress relief is key to achieving a healthier lifestyle. Even a single massage session can significantly lower heart rate, cortisol and insulin levels-all of which help reduce daily stress. Encourages Relaxation Relax. Reset. Repeat. Massage has been shown to help the body enter a relaxing rest-and-recovery mode: an effect that lingers long after the massage is over. Improves Posture Unlike other bad habits, poor posture can be relaxing to correct. Massage helps reinforce healthy and natural movements, which can get your posture back on track. Improves Circulation The pressure created by massage therapy moves blood through congested areas. This causes new blood to flow in, resulting improved body function. Lower Blood Pressure High blood pressure has more misconceptions than nearly any other medical condition. But one effective

way to stave off high blood pressure naturally is massage therapy. Relaxes Muscles Got neck, back or muscle pain? Odds are, sitting all day at the office is the culprit. Massage gets to the root of persistent pain by relaxing tense muscles. Improves Flexibility and Range of Motion As we age, joints tend to tighten, making range of
Page 7
motion more restricted. Massage helps keep joints more fluid, making you more flexible and less prone to injury. Promotes Deeper and Easier Breathing One of the telltale signs of anxiety and stress is constricted breathing. Massage can play an important role in reliving respiratory issues and training the body how to relax. Relieves Headaches 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches and migraines. Massage helps ease the pressure and pain, which can also reduce the chance and frequency of headaches. Strengthens the Immune System Studies indicate that regular massage can naturally increase the immune system’s cytotoxic capacity–the activity level of the body’s natural "killer cells." Enhances Post-Operative Rehabilitation Massage helps the body pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs. This makes massage therapy a great supplement to post-operative rehabilitation. Improves Rehabilitation After Injury Rehabilitation can be frustrating. A continual massage program can accelerate the recovery process, as well as help you relax and stay motivated.

1. B. No. Because people are living longer, healthier lives, they are able to be donors much later in life. In fact, the oldest U.S. donor was 92. 2. A. Yes. Even with a health condition, you may be able to donate your organs or tissues. When the time comes, doctors will evaluate the condition of your organs and decide about donation. 3. A. True. People are treated the same, whether they’re registered donors or not. Every effort is made to save the life of the patient. Donation is only considered when death has occurred or is about to happen.

4. B. False. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, which manages how organs are distributed, never considers race, gender, income or celebrity status in allocating organs. Priority is given to recipients based on medical criteria including the severity of illness, blood and tissue type, body size, and the distance the recipient is from the donor. 5. A. True. The donor’s family pays for medical care and funeral costs, but not for organ or tissue donation. Costs related to donation are paid by the recipient or his or her insurance. How did you do? If you’d like to learn more or join the millions who have registered as organ, eye, and tissue donors, go towww.organdonor.gov or www.donaciondeorganos.gov.
