STAGE Magnolia Sadies
By Daisy Willis
Valley events have been jazzed up and sparkling with the playful glamour of the Magnolia Sadies, a dance company dedicated to recreating the spirit and style of the Roaring Twenties, the Turbulent Thirties and the Fighting Forties.
Artistic director Shawna Serpe had returned to school at East Stroudsburg University to study her twin passions, history and dance, and there could be no better way to combine the two than by bringing old-timey music and moves to a public voracious for all things vintage. Sharing members with the earlier-established rockabilly Iron Rail Rosies, Serpe’s dance company takes festivals, parties and extravagant events through a time warp with special attention to historical detail. “I would love it if people watch us dance and feel like they took a time capsule,” says Serpe. “We try to have costume, hair and makeup authentic. We really want to represent the time period.”
Her choreography is all based on vernacular jazz movement, meaning the dance average people
would do. Poring over footage from the era, she’s taken notes from vaudeville and each successive dance craze of the early 20th century, with guest choreographers adding tap in the style of Bojangles and the wild jitterbug.
With at least 12 members, the Sadies include seamstresses, singers and dance instructors, which helps add facets to what they can offer: sewing authentic costumes, adding a vocal element to performances and developing teaching opportunities. The Magnolia Sadies have enjoyed growing interest not only for performances, but for lessons in their vintage jazz moves, which they often spend some of their gig time teaching.
Check their Facebook to find the Sadies at the most elegant evening or the sweatiest summer festival. Keep an eye out for lessons and you too could embody this high-spirited history.

MUSIC
Allentown Symphony Orchestra
By Daisy Willis
Big things are in store this year at Miller Symphony Hall, home to the Allentown Symphony Orchestra. Throughout the coming months, a series of multifaceted events will showcase the growing scope of this arts entity’s ambitions.
This month, the orchestra’s Pops series sees a duo performing songs and dance numbers from the films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, along with jazz standards of the era, with the orchestral accompaniment. The Pops series has presented a broad appeal, offering the music of James Bond, Disney and, soon, David Bowie.
In February, renowned pianist Joyce Yang takes the stage, and concertmaster Eliezer Gutman will perform Scheherazade, a piece themed on the stories of One Thousand and One Nights. This emphasis on music as storytelling is introduced as Zhou Tian opens with The Palace of Nine Perfections, inspired by a famous painting at the Met. Interpreting art into music is the project of a video contest that ASO is launching this year
for filmmakers. “We’ll have categories for kids, high school, college and adult,” says the orchestra’s artistic director, Diane Wittry. “Everyone’s making films with their iPhones anyway. I want people to hear it live, meet Zhou Tian, talk to him, find out what inspired him, find something compelling and tell a story.”
A very special production in March further explores the collaboration of visual and musical arts as Pictures at an Exhibition pairs music with animation in its East Coast debut. Ten paintings by a late friend inspired composer Mussorgsky’s ten musical vignettes, enhanced into animated imagery by students of USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. In collaboration with the Allentown Art Museum, the ASO will open this show with submissions to a contest to create music inspired by art at the local museum.

The Zinc Industry in Palmerton
, Pennsylvania
Zinc, once used to make brass and construction materials, was a booming industry in the early 1900s, and the New Jersey Zinc Company was the largest U.S. producer of the chemical element. One of their locations was in Palmerton, which was actually named after Stephen Palmer, who was once the head of the company. Due to zinc smelting and other industrial activities, Palmerton was left with an enormous smelting residue pile known as the “Cinder Bank.” This bank is made up of the 33 million tons of rocky waste left by the New Jersey Zinc Company. A decline in the demand for zinc and a raised awareness of hazards led to the end of zinc smelting in Palmerton in 1980.
The Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum’s new exhibit, The Zinc Industry in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, is offering an in-depth explanation of the New Jersey Zinc Company, the role it played in the development of Palmerton and an exploration of the lives of the men and women who lived and worked there.

A Royal Treat
Queen of the Valley Farm
Queen of the Valley Farm sits atop 32 acres of countryside, with walking trails and a stream. It’s the perfect place for a vacation—a dog’s vacation, that is. Queen of the Valley Farm is a pet resort that makes each dog’s unique needs a priority. “We believe in lots of exercise and outdoor time for the dogs so they can be as happy as possible while they’re on vacation with us,” says proprietor Ian Dollman.
“We accommodate for special diets, medications and any medical restrictions for our clients to ensure their pup is healthy and comfortable during his or her stay.” Queen of the Valley has turf and grass yards for the dogs to enjoy supervised group play, as well as large indoor and outdoor suites. “Many people do not know this, but Queen of the Valley started as a Great Dane breeding kennel, so our runs were made to be very spacious,” says Dollman, who ensures that each pet is in for a royal treat.
Dan Ricca, founder of Bacon Gourmet, and JR Tiger, executive chef and winner of Food Network’s Chopped, agree that everything is better with bacon, hence the inspiration for Bacon Gourmet. “We’re giving the community something they can’t get anywhere else,” says Ricca. All the food is fresh and natural, nothing frozen. Sauces and breads are handmade, and the spring water they cook with is fresh and purified, which “takes the food to another level of cooking.” There is appeal for all food lovers here, even vegetarians, but if guests are coming for the bacon experience, they must try the deep-fried bacon and save room for maple bacon ice cream. Bacon Gourmet also offers cannabidiol (CBD) in their smoothies or coffees and teas per request, as they say it offers huge benefits for the body and is preventative to keep illnesses away.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Lorita Musselman Beta Sigma Phi International, Eta Master Chapter
After high school, Lorita Musselman and a group of her friends joined the sorority Beta Sigma Phi International, Eta Master Chapter of Bethlehem. Musselman and a few friends remain active today— more than 60 years later. Beta Sigma Phi, now in its 86th year, is a sorority that supports cultural, social and service programs. As for service, Musselman, the service chair for about 15 years now, says, “We collect about anything imaginable.”
They collect books for Cops ‘n’ Kids, supplies for elementary schools, non-perishable items for local food banks and winter clothing for those in need. Musselman has also prepared blizzard bags and made floral Thanksgiving bouquets for Meals on Wheels. Additionally, the Eta Master Chapter sends over 300 Christmas cards to veterans at Victory House of the Lehigh Valley.
One of the larger projects that the Eta Master Chapter has accomplished is coordinating three vintage fashion shows. They earned over $12,000 in order to install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in the Bethlehem Area School District. AEDs are needed to restart the heart after someone goes into sudden cardiac arrest from a stroke or heart attack. The AEDs are in memory of a Bethlehem Area School District teacher who passed away. Musselman recalls a proud moment when her chapter and the school nurses were able to present their results from the fashion shows to the school board.
Musselman also enjoys being with her chapter friends and meeting new people at Mid-Eastern Conventions. “You make friends, a lot are for a lifetime, and also friends from other states and cities,” Musselman says. In addition to Beta Sigma Phi, Musselman has volunteered over 2,500 hours with Gracedale Nursing Home in Northampton County and volunteers at Christ Lutheran Church in Hellertown.

Playa Bowls
Founders of Playa Bowls, Robert Giuliani and Abby Taylor grew up along the Jersey Shore but were inspired by surfing trips to Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, among others. Almost all of the surf towns they visited offered a unique version of an açaí or pitaya bowl. They began experimenting with açaí to create their own twist on the bowls. Giuliani and Taylor made a deal with a pizza place on 8th Avenue in Belmar, New Jersey, and set up a makeshift shop in front of the store. They told their customers their story and educated them on the benefits of açaí and their quality of ingredients. Fast-forward a couple of years later, and Playa Bowl now has over 20 locations to spread the happiness. After starting out with a menu of açaí bowls and a few smoothies, they have expanded to green bowls, coconut bowls, chia pudding bowls, juices and more, with the Pura Vida açaí bowl and Almond Joy coconut bowl as customer favorites. Both Lehigh Valley locations are run by local businessman Jim Dale.

GET THE GOODS LOCALLY
For the Girls
Sandra Prothman, Owner
Photography by Andrew Tomasino
When we look good, we feel good. And so much of looking good starts underneath our layers of clothing—it starts with the bra. That’s why it is so important to find the right bra, one that actually fits the way it is supposed to. With 80 percent of women wearing the wrong size, it couldn’t hurt to get a professional’s opinion. Sandra Prothman has dedicated her business to empowering women through her shop in Easton, For the Girls.
Tell us about the mission at For the Girls.
Our mission is to help women feel their best by knowing they look their best. I realized how great my friends and I felt and looked when we went to a bra fitter back in my hometown of Kansas City. When I discovered that people in the Lehigh Valley had to drive into New York or Philadelphia to get a proper fitting bra, I decided I would share that feeling and experience with everyone in my new hometown.
How important is it for women to find a bra that fits?
The correct-fitting bra will help you look and feel your best throughout the day. When your bra fits and gives you lift and support, it is more slimming, accentuates your waist and balances your figure. You also look
more youthful. It will help with posture and can eliminate back pain by shifting the pressure away from your shoulders and onto the band where the weight should be supported.
How can one tell if her bra fits properly?
At least 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra. First and foremost, the center of the breast should be positioned halfway between the shoulder and elbow. I like to say I specialize in taking them from where they are and putting them back to where they started! The band should be in a straight line parallel to the floor in the front and the back, and should feel like a gentle hug all day long. If the band is riding up in the back, it is not the correct fit. The front of the band should fit directly where your breast tissue begins on
your torso. Over 90 percent of your breast weight should be supported by the band, which eliminates shoulder pain and pressure. The center of the bra should sit flat against the flesh between the breasts. The bra should not shift when you raise your arms. Lastly, all of the breast tissue should be fully inside the cups—none should be on the outside of any of the underwire or spilling over the top of the cup.
Tell us about the styles and sizes available at the shop.
We are continually bringing in new cuts, shapes and styles of brassieres. Most of our bras come from the U.K. or France. I find they have much better support and fit, without costing more than the U.S. brands. The U.K. bras also have a much broader size and style range. Our sizes go from a 28A cup to a 52K cup, which is a U.S. size N. We have everything from a traditional T-shirt bra to a molded spacer T-shirt bra, which shapes to your body and feels great! We also have lots of “cut and sew” styles with varying shapes to give each woman the individual look, fit and style she desires. Once in the correct size bra, you can modify your shape and look depending on the frame of the bra. The possibilities are endless!
Is there a certain style that continuously flies off the shelves?
We try to carry every shape and style imaginable. The Matilda from Elomi is very popular for its rounder cup shape, low plunge and comfortable mesh cup that provides gravity-defying support for even the most voluptuous cup—it goes to a U.K. size JJ. The Fantasie side support is also very popular, as well as the Panache line. Simone Perele has luxurious bras in multiple styles with some of the best-quality lace and spacer T-shirt technology, helping you look and feel beautiful. Empreinte is also a favorite as it has Chantilly lace cups or embroidered “tattoo” lace
toile cups with no seams and a round shape. It lasts twice as long as a traditional bra, with no break-in period, and feels as incredible as it looks.
What are some other products that you carry?
We carry Commando-brand knickers and lingerie. Commando has super fun and comfy thongs, briefs and boy shorts that feel great and create no panty lines, even under yoga pants. My favorite is the butter brief for obvious reasons—it “feels like butter”! I have a full line of Rago shapewear, which can reduce you up to two sizes. They have a large size range and go up to 10XL. You might have seen them on the show Mad Men, as that is the only line they would allow under the actresses’ costumes. I also carry fun and luxurious nighties and loungewear, going up to size 3X.
Tell us about the option to host a party at the shop.
Parties are always welcome and it can make the experience even more enjoyable with your gal pals along. Just call and set up an appointment for a party; we do them any night you would like, and you are welcome to bring in festive things to drink and nosh! Sundays can be fun too, with many ladies going to brunch after the fit party.
What is the best part about working in the Lehigh Valley?
I have made so many wonderful friends here in such a short time. Everyone has made me feel exceptionally welcome. The people are by far my favorite thing, but I have to also say the history and scenery is amazing! It’s such a beautiful place to live. It truly has become my hometown!

For one common example, many people want to lose weight, and it presents a perennial and soul-crushing challenge. Brighton herself started out on a personal and professional journey from the wreckage of a yo-yo dieting habit. She was no stranger to the common wisdom of good health: eat well, drink water, exercise. “Oftentimes we know exactly what we need to do,” Brighton says. “I realized that it comes down to head game.”
The five words that so often scuttle our good intentions are, “I don’t feel like it.” When the appointed time rolls around to sneaker-up and get sweaty, we’re faced with the suddenly very compelling thought that we don’t feel like it. And whether it’s that or some other excuse, our responsible side is all too likely unequipped to win the debate.
I wanted to look good naked I want to be healthy and active at 95
Willpower vs. Whypower
Fed up with not meeting her goal, Brighton decided to go deeper. A simple intention to maintain healthy habits wasn’t cutting it. “New Year’s resolutions fail because they’re working on willpower rather than whypower,” she says. She looked past her original goal to lose weight and found a multitude of whys. “I wanted to be a good role model for my sons. I wanted to look good naked. I want to be healthy and active at 95. I wanted to end my self-sabotage once and for all.”
When the adrenaline of that first month wears off, life happens. Maybe you’ve been working on money management, and the only thing standing between you and the recurring temptation of a frivolous purchase is a flimsy resolution. Without exploring and understanding the whys of your goal, simple willpower can’t stand up to the draw of instant gratification.
The Art of the Pause
As powerless as we might feel in the wake of a backslide, there’s always a chance to choose. Brighton quotes Viktor Frankl: “Between stimulus and response, there is a space.” Take a moment to pause and assess the decision in front of you when you feel the excuses welling up.
If you’ve reflected on your deeper reasons for a goal, you can draw on them to add weight to
the question of whether a short-lived ice cream experience trumps the self-credibility and progress represented by celery and circuit training. Brighton recommends journaling to all her clients to become versed in the whys that they truly want informing their actions.
“In life, there are only three things we control,” she says, “actions, reactions and thoughts or mindset.” Pause and recognize the power you have.
Hack the System
Thoughts and beliefs create actions and behaviors. Returning to Brighton’s dieting difficulty, a big part of overcoming it was recognizing the belief system she was working under. “What I told myself was that exercise was drudgery, a necessary evil in order to get desired results,” she says. The belief didn’t serve her; in fact, it caused avoidance and stress.
We become what we think about, and though it takes time and intention, we can use declarations and mantras to practice a new way of thinking that will change how we feel about what we do. Brighton decided on a better angle and reprogrammed herself with the following: “Exercise is a privilege that I’m grateful to do every day.”
Wouldn’t a lot of things be easier if they had positive associations? Pause, recognize your mindset and decide whether it needs an update.
Strive, Don’t Struggle
Brighton’s Mental Toughness approach may be no-nonsense, no excuses and demand a lot of en ergy, but it’s not meant to be rigid and self-denying. An alternative to the mindless rigor of inarticulate willpower (and often resultant self-disgusted failure), most of the work involved is introspection to understand yourself, your motivations and the ways you self-sabotage. Self-awareness paves the way to bring your goals in line with your actions and restore a sense of self-credibility.
This Mental Toughness mentor has plenty more to say on self-sabotage and the guidance we get from our emotions, but for now you can get journaling about what you want and why you want it to start experimenting with Brighton’s techniques. It could be the start of a better rela tionship with the person most responsible for your happiness: you!
NO CONTRACTS. NO BOGUS FEES. NO HASSLE. JUST RESULTS.
Allentown native Evan Howard has plenty on his plate to celebrate. He is a proud Penn State alumnus, having received his degree in kinesiology in 2013. From earning his certification to train in high school to pursuing his Doctorate in Physical Therapy, this young business professional has remained constant as a personal trainer, for a few good reasons.
This January, Howard celebrates his second anniversary as the owner of the Lehigh Valley’s Best Gym that houses the Best Trainers, as voted by the readers of Lehigh Valley Style in 2017. In just a short time, his facility has grown to include an elite team offering top-tier services in personal training, nutritional counseling and massage therapy. Word-of-mouth referrals drive the business—nearly 200 clients are helped on a daily basis inside and outside of his facility.
Howard’s goal with Forward Thinking Fitness (FTF) was to shake things up in the area. He wanted to change the culture with a team that is just as passionate to help others achieve success as he is. His approach called out the competition to offer better to their own clients and challenged them to
compete with the client-focused, results-oriented approach Howard takes at FTF. After eight years in the industry, he knew it was time to offer Lehigh Valley residents the comprehensive program they wanted on terms they deserved—their own.
Clients enjoy no contracts, no bogus fees and no hassle at Howard’s facility. “Just results,” he proclaims. His award-winning team’s goal is to do whatever is necessary so that their clients can become the best version of themselves. There’s nothing but positive vibes, high-quality standards and a seamless experience that has changed the lives of those ready to commit to themselves. The FTF community is motivating, inspiring and downright lifesaving, thanks to the constant support that clients and staff provide to each other.
If there was ever a low-pressure opportunity for life-transforming change, Forward Thinking Fitness may have the answer. Howard is so confident in his facility, he offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee to all of his potential clients. Clients push past limits on their own terms, with the help of some of the most qualified professionals in the area.
LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST
For Whitney and Chris Carullo, it feels like just yesterday that they were sitting on the couch talking about how they should open a gym. They were so fed up with the typical gym atmosphere. “It was the opposite of results driven,” says Whitney. “Coaches competed against one another for clients and there was absolutely no community. I’m sure everyone has been in one where the front desk doesn’t know your name and the trainers could care less if you drop a weight on your face.”
She remembers the conversation with Chris in regards to what they would name it: “We didn’t want something too hard-core or even mediocre. We wanted something that spoke to everyone. That represented a way of life. That’s when we came upon Liven Up. If you look up ‘liven up’ in the dictionary, it means to awaken, to invigorate, and simply to become alive. It was everything we wanted to stand for.”
They recently polled members on what Liven Up meant to them. There were words like motivation, community, fun, accountability, results, energy, and so on. But one word that stuck out more than any other was FAMILY. That’s when they knew Liven Up had become everything they sought it out to be. It is truly a place where everyone works together to accomplish a common goal: to live life to the fullest.
Liven Up Health and Fitness is a personal training facility that specializes in results-based fitness programs and healthy lifestyle guidance, empowering the lives of all who walk through the doors. They have been serving clients in the Lehigh Valley since 2012 and are proud to be a locally owned and operated business. Great service, highly educated trainers, and members who get results are all part of the quality-driven club.
Their mission is to improve overall health and fitness, enhance quality of life and to empower people to be the best they can be. The goal is to transform the way people think about health, fitness and success in life. This is achieved through professional coaching and design of exercise and conditioning coupled with proper nutrition in a fun, challenging and educational environment, conducive to success for each client. Liven Up is very serious about building long-term relationships, achieving amazing results and always upholding the highest commitment to excellence.
All are invited to become a part of the Liven Up Health and Fitness family, where everyone is very passionate about the profession, committed to the mission and dedicated to serving all in a positive, successful environment.

FLEXIBLE. AFFORDABLE. ACCOMODATING.
DeSales University’s ACCESS program has been offering adults the opportunity to earn their bachelor’s degree quickly, conveniently and affordably for more than 40 years. Various options for course delivery—on campus and online— as well as flexible scheduling allow students to customize their schedules. The accelerated classes meet on campus one evening per week for eight weeks from 6–9 p.m. or completely online.
In ACCESS, there are nine start dates throughout the year, making this flexible in scheduling classes. Students have the availability to take courses at three campus locations—Center Valley, Bethlehem Area and Lansdale Area. And if, for whatever reason, students need to “stop-out,” they can return at their convenience and pick up where they left off.
ACCESS is ranked in U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 4 percent of online programs nationally. Affordable Colleges Online has ranked the ACCESS online programs in criminal justice, finance, human resources and marketing. The ACCESS program has been named a Leader in Adult Education for the 2016 and 2017 Who’s Who in Business, Lehigh Valley.

The Pancake Mound Hardball Cider on Main
By Kristen Rinaldi | Photo by Shelbie Pletz
At Hardball Cider, Head Chef Amanda Cox invites diners to play with their food—especially, when it comes to the famous pancake mound, which is offered all day every day. “You can have fun with your brunch,” she says, describing the entire menu as indulgent taproom food.
The mound consists of roughly 14 silverdollar pancakes and three toppings that come on the side. Of course, guests can request as many add-ons as they’d like. And let’s just say, they are truly endless—Cox even threw Halloween candy into the mix during October. Some mainstays include apple butter, herbed Brie, jalapeño maple, coconut anglaise, spiced yogurt, cranberry chutney, chocolate chips, sweet potato vinaigrette, dried fruit, crushed peanut brittle
M&Ms, apple cinnamon Cheerios, fresh apple and pear, chocolate syrup, rainbow sprinkles, kettle corn and toasted fluff.
Of course, when you dine at Hardball, you also have your fair share of ciders to choose from. And for this dish in particular, Cox recommends the Sunday Hop, a drier cider that’s brewed with hops. “You’ve got that little bit of sweet, but it’s like a beer for people who like beer,” she says. They’ve also started circulating different local brews on tap—at press time, it was HiJinx. But according to
Cox, the entire menu is local: “Down to the cheese on the cheesesteak,” she says.
And she uses cider in nearly everything. “Even if it’s not mentioned on the ingredient list,” she says, “I always emphasize the cider flavors.” It’s the perfect gig for Cox, who readers may remember as the former head chef at Valenca. “I love the process of making things and pairing food and beverage.”

Rosemary & Joe
JULY 15, 2017
Birds of a Feather Photography
When their first coffee-shop date in high school ended up lasting six hours, Rosemary and Joe knew they had a connection. They parted ways for college, but reconnected and made it work long distance while in grad school—Joe at Villanova for biology and Rosemary at Cornell for engineering. Upon graduation, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and that's where Joe proposed.
He planned a trip to hike at Amicalola Falls (the tallest waterfall in the southeastern U.S.) in northern Georgia. While hiking with their dog, Shane, they stopped at a secluded spot and Joe proposed. They enjoyed a picnic at the top of the waterfall before heading over to Cartecay Vineyards to celebrate.
For their wedding reception, the rustic elegance of Folino Estate was a perfect fit for these wineloving Italians, accentuated with olive branches to match those that Rosemary had created on her invitations with her grandmother's paints. She also displayed a veil that has been worn by women in her family since the 1800s. The color of Rosemary's sapphire engagement ring matched the bridesmaids' dresses. Rosemary's younger sister, Elise, was her maid of honor and one of Joe's best friends, Mat, was his best man. A standout moment was when the band played the tarantella, a dance traditional at Italian weddings, and everyone participated. Guests spent a good part of the reception in the outdoor area overlooking the vineyards as the sun set over the vines.

Shailene & Angelo SEPTEMBER
10, 2016
Vanessa Guevara Photography
Angelo and Shailene were introduced by mutual friends at a local bar, locking eyes that night seven years ago and never looking back. Two weeks after meeting, Angelo took her to Las Vegas for her birthday. Friends and family thought she was nuts going with a stranger, but they had a bond no one understood.
Angelo proposed on Thanksgiving Day right before dinner. It was their first year hosting Thanksgiving at their new home, and Angelo decided to make a toast and thank everyone for coming. Suddenly, he was kneeling in front of Shailene with the most beautiful ring in the presence of all of their equally surprised family and friends.
Every year, Angelo and Shailene go to Bear Creek Mountain Resort for Valentine's Day, so it was only right to celebrate their special day there. Every hour, from the moment Shailene awoke to their wedding at 5 p.m., Angelo sent a wedding gift up to her room. From the beautiful ceremony outside to the perfect indoor reception, their day was filled with so much joy. The best part about the day was being able to channel Shailene’s grandmother from her hospital room, whose battle with pancreatic cancer prevented her from attending. It was a beautiful weekend filled with laughter and tears.

Emily & Matt
MARC H 25, 2017
Samantha Clemmer Photography
Matt and Emily met in college, bonding over sci-fi and bad jokes while working together on the newspaper and humor magazine.
For their sixth anniversary, they visited Cooperstown, New York for the second time. Instead of enjoying the Baseball Hall of Fame again, they opted for relaxation on the local lake.
On their last night, they set out to the dock to see the Blood Moon. The night was black, cold and cloudy. Eventually, a moon as red as crimson peeked out from behind the clouds. That's when Matt decided to propose. Emily cried so hard she barely heard what he was saying, and just like some clichéd romantic comedy, she also forgot to say yes.
With family coming from New Jersey, New York and even Florida, they were so happy to have a wedding in the Lehigh Valley that showcased the place they've chosen to make their home. A small reception of 70 guests was held in the Hotel Bethlehem's Mural Ballroom. Matt and Emily loved the history and opulence, affectionately calling the space a cross between The Shining and The Great Gatsby. The hotel and vendors really worked with them to incorporate their DIY elements.
Guests had a wonderful time and enjoyed the area. Irish relatives brought the after-party to McCarthy's Red Stag Pub, and the next day, Matt and Emily treated some guests to the Blast Furnace Blues Festival at SteelStacks (where Emily works), while others hit up the Sands Casino.

Tara & Mike
AUGUST 19, 2017
Birds of a Feather Photography
Tara and Mike met through a mutual friend after obliviously crossing paths on several occasions. Mike proposed in Glacier National Park, Montana, in July of 2016, after the two had reached the top of Logan Pass, an elevation of 6,646 feet. Mike asked a stranger to take a picture of them with the background of Bearhat Mountain, and then surprised Tara by taking a knee.
Mike being a graphic designer and Tara being an event coordinator, their vision for a nontraditional wedding took shape and was full of thoughtful touches. It was a laid-back setting with a casual dress code and an unconventional entrance: Tara and her dad riding in on his Harley before walking down the aisle. Their friend Brendan officiated, using a script written by all three. Mike branded the wedding with a mountainthemed logo and custom stationery and signage, and their dog, Patty, had the honor of a signature cocktail in his name. The ladies' bouquets were made of homegrown wildflowers and the tables decorated with locust branches cut by Tara's father. Guests feasted on cheesesteaks and pulled pork sliders for dinner, and an ice cream sundae station for dessert, supplemented by kiffles from a family recipe made by Tara's great-aunts. Each guest received a wand to wave after the ceremony, and shared the event on social media with the hashtag #mikeandtarawedtheirpants and a designated Snapchat filter.

MAY 28, 2017
JHM Event Group
Jill and Jason met at a DeSales University Homecoming event in 2008, playing beer pong in the parking lot. A few years and Facebook messages later, they were in a relationship.
When Jason made the uncharacteristic gesture of a reservation at Melt on Jill's 29 th birthday, she knew an engagement was coming. After an amazing dinner, he took her to the third-floor rooftop lounge, pulled the ring box out of his jacket, and asked, "Will you continue this journey with me?" He was so nervous he didn't even open the box, but the servers swooped in with champagne and dessert as soon as Jill said yes.
Their wedding reflected their personalities: unique, fun-loving, laid-back elegance. They chose The Hamilton Kitchen and Bar because it was exactly their style and focused on their two favorite things: great food and great bourbon! The bourbon motif played throughout the wedding, including a stellar bourbon tasting and empty bottles and on-the-rocks glasses as part of the centerpieces. From the fashion to the ceremony to the reception, Jill and Jason bucked tradition, and not just for the sake of it. Their unique plan incorporated Polish and Catholic customs, and they walked in together. Along with the ceremony, highlights included their First Look and Jill’s sister's matron of honor speech. Their first dance on The Hamilton's patio during cocktail hour in the middle of Downtown Allentown offered a chance to breathe and take in the moment before the party really started.

Melissa & Sam
JUNE 10, 2017

Sam and Melissa met at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Melissa grew up Jewish, so her house was never decorated in the traditional Christmas décor. Sam's family, on the other hand, had a house full of lights, a tree and Santa Claus everywhere. Living together, Sam was pretty bummed that their house had no lights, no Santa, no tree. So, on December 13, 2015, Melissa arranged for Sam to go on a run while she turned the house into a Christmas wonderland. When Sam got home, she was greeted with a fire, Christmas lights and a live reindeer (their dog, Stella, with antlers). Tears ran down her face, even before she knew what else was to come. She said yes.
On the day of the wedding, Melissa got ready at her parents’ house and Sam got ready at the Hyatt. The two met at Burnside Plantation for their First Look. They took First Look photos at the far end of the property, in the grass by the tree line, then waited with their bridal party in the barn for their guests to arrive. The ceremony took place in the upper meadow. Melissa and Sam were married under a birch chuppah, built by Sam's father. The cocktail hour took place between the barn and the corn crib, and the reception was under a tent in the lower meadow. Guests danced, played corn hole and Life-Size Jenga and had an amazing time. The day was perfect!

Kait & Joe
OCTOBER 15, 2016
Paula Galante Photography, LLC
For years, Kait and Joe hung in the same crowd with many mutual friends without crossing paths. When Kait lived in Philadelphia, friends finally visited, bringing Joe along. The two met at Love Park and became instant friends. One night when Kait was finally single, the two were walking to Pat's Cheesesteaks and Joe told her he was going to marry her, explaining exactly how he was going to propose: someday, as Jack White sang “their song,” “Hotel Yorba.”
It was years later that Jack White headlined their favorite festival, Bonnaroo. Joe had a customdesigned ring in his pocket, made from rubies from his mother and his grandmother's engagement diamond, with the Bonnaroo symbol in the center. It hadn’t been a sure thing, but Jack White did break into “Hotel Yorba” and Joe made his proposal. They were married by Kait's aunt under a beautiful full autumn moon on a pristine organic farm in the rolling farmland near their home, making use of nearly every acre of apple orchard, Japanese medicinal garden, tree grove, farm houses and barn. Joe and Kait planned and organized every detail, purchased all their decoration second hand at flea markets and were introduced with a string quartet version of “Hotel Yorba.” The bridesmaids' tartan plaid was custom made and designed by Johanna Forta of Mertztown. Their wedding featured two live bands, a mini taco bar and specialty autumn cocktails. A handmade family tree of framed photos brought loved ones past and present to the event.

Courtney & Matt
OCTOBER 15, 2016
Josh Finsel + Amber Breiner Photography
Matt and Courtney met at the Rail Jam snowboarding event in Easton, and Matt would later propose on the snowy anniversary of their first date. With roads covered in snow, they hiked up to South Mountain, snowboarded down and then took a cross-country ski around town. When they decided to make a snow woman, Matt insisted they dress it like Courtney. He stepped back and said, "If this is you, it's still missing one thing." He started to put a ring on the snow woman, turned and said, "Just kidding, this is for you." A very sappy speech followed, and snowflakes and tears graced their faces as they giggled in the yard. They were married by the water at Lake Naomi Clubhouse in the Poconos, with cozy blankets and apple cider on a perfect October day. The sky was blue, the trees fiery and the air crisp. Matt canoed to the ceremony site with his best man. Matt and Courtney's one surviving grandparent was honored with the duty of Flower Gram, and a friend officiated the ceremony they wrote themselves. Cocktail hour was held on the dock overlooking the lake. As the sun set, everyone moved into the dining room for a buffet that included a mashed potato bar. Dancing kicked off with a first dance, Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize," and the couple performed a routine to "Pennsylvania Polka.”
The night was spent eating cupcakes, taking photo-booth pictures, drinking and enjoying the company of loved ones.

the florals
One would be hardpressed to find roses in this bridal bouquet. The creation features a mix of local dahlias, quirky carnations (they’re making a big comeback!), orchids, thistle, yarrow, scabiosa, clematis and more.
• Ballrooms with beautiful mountain views • Outdoor ceremony and cocktail space
Fox and Finch Vintage Rentals put together a team of local wedding professionals to create this vibrantly urban, faux-nuptial celebration, all inspired by the Valley’s deep roots in the steel industry.
Small but meaningful touches were made by Sarah Reese of Story By Design events—like the shadowbox triangles that were used to hold delicate air plants and the 3D paper shapes.
The bright and bold color palette, consisting of shades of fuchsia, blue and copper, instantly accented the natural wood, stone and brick backdrops used throughout.
