Something New

The Style team has had bridal on the brain since last year’s weddings edition. Couples are getting married every weekend of every season, and locals are constantly looking for guidance. We wondered, how do we give our readers more than just one issue a year? So, as the saying goes—something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue—we dove in to something new!

This January, we celebrate the launch of lehighvalleystyleweddings.com, the ultimate online resource for Valley brides and grooms.

We’re excited to be publishing curated content related to all things weddings, all year round. We’re also excited about our new bridal directories, making it simpler than ever for fiancé(e)s to plan their big days. Scroll through catalogs of area florists, photographers, venues and more until you find your perfect match.

And speaking of perfect matches, we can’t wait to highlight all of the local love stories that didn’t make it into this year’s feature. You’ll immediately find five full wedding summaries online that aren’t in this issue, but continue to check back as more real-life wedding recaps are added to the website!

No added bandwidth needed for the extra devices you packed on during the holidays. The solution is eero from Service Electric.

eero’s TrueMesh Technology doesn’t just extend your WiFi, it blankets your entire home in fast, reliable WiFi by intelligently routing tra c between eero and eero Beacons to avoid congestion, bu ering and dead spots.

Track your progress with the free eero app for total control of your WiFi network:

• Manage screen time with parental controls

• Check network speeds and how much data each device is using

• Regular software updates happen automatically overnight

• A separate guest network makes it easy to share access and also to block unknown devices

My favorite thing about attending a wedding is ...

The father-daughter dance; I always cry!

Catching up with old friends. Between post-collegiate drift and diverging life paths, the happy couple’s nuptials tend to double as a mini-reunion.

Dressing up and being in a beautiful, happy environment.

Marketing Intern

How long have you been interning for Style? What made you apply?

I have been interning for LVS for about three months. I was initially seeking a new internship to coincide with my degree in fashion marketing. I have always been curious about what really goes down behind the scenes of a magazine; applying for an internship here was the perfect way to find out, and I couldn’t be happier that I did.

As a marketing intern, what are you responsible for?

Currently, I am responsible for publishing public events on our website’s calendar as well as posting media onto Twitter. I have also had the pleasure of helping out with different photoshoots as well as the Women of Style event and Whiskey Fest.

You were on set for this month’s bridal feature, Aisle Style. Tell us about that experience!

I knew from just arriving at the location that this feature was going to be beautiful. As much as it was gorgeous seeing all those spectacular gowns in action, it sure gave me a workout hauling them to and from the shoot location.

What’s the coolest project that you’ve been able to be a part of so far?

The coolest project I think I have been a part of so far was the photoshoot we did with Carson Kressley. It was such a surreal moment seeing someone on TV and then up close and personal. Because of this experience, I can say that I have been inside of a celebrity’s house.

Tell us what the biggest takeaway from your intern experience has been, thus far. Even though it was intimidating not knowing what I would be challenged with, all of these women who work here have made me feel just as important and make an environment that is welcoming and comfortable to strive and work your best. So, my takeaway from this experience is to always keep learning from those around you.

Describe your dream job!

My dream is to one day work for a magazine to help inspire and motivate women all over. Now as far as a job goes... well, I’m still figuring out what title that would fall under.

What’s the best part about living in the Lehigh Valley?

The best part is being able to constantly have something to do on a weekend or weeknight. The Valley is filled with excitement.

What are you excited to do this winter?

Once the snow starts coming, I can’t wait to go snow tubing with friends.

Sea Rae

Appearing on the music scene like a mermaid on the crest of a wave, Sea Rae brings her own sound to the Lehigh Valley: mesmerizing vocals laced with electronic beats.

When she started out with her acoustic guitar in eighth grade, high school songwriter cafes and open mics gave Allentown’s Ciara Rae Alvarado a place to share her voice, and from this proving ground she “went full force” after graduating. That was a year and a half ago, and she’s been gigging ever since, releasing a new original track on a monthly basis.

Sea Rae’s bountiful creativity is inspired by performers like Lady Gaga, Banks and Stevie Nicks, whose witchy ways with artifice and honesty show in Sea Rae’s persona. Though she also performs covers of contemporary, ’80s and ’90s hits in her own style, Sea Rae’s originals reflect the power of art to help and heal us. (See if you can guess which of her songs is

about the driving anxiety she dealt with after a serious accident.) “Art has helped me in so many ways,” Alvarado says. “I’m happy as long as any type of venue can take some of that away with them.”

Bringing an SPD-S drum pad to her shows, Sea Rae uses this instrument to trigger the strands of her electronic songs as she sings. They’re programmed by her partner, DJ Brown, who makes this power couple complete as producer/videographer.

Sea Rae has played at spots like Broadway Social, SteelStacks, The Wooden Match, Queen City BBQ and an East Coast tour including Philly, New York and Toronto venues. At the end of this month, she’s heading to Los Angeles for a West Coast tour, but you can always hear her music online. Find her next gig on Instagram.

Book & Puppet Company

The cozy warren of Book & Puppet in Easton is a magnet for bookworms and creatives alike. Amid the gleaming spines of colorful books for all ages, a beautiful red-and-gold theater presents puppet shows for young and old.

Andy Laties and Rebecca Migdal brought their imaginarium to the Lehigh Valley from New York City a little over a year ago, and have fit into Easton’s vibrant downtown like cash in a birthday card. While Migdal wields the puppets, Laties helps narrate and accompanies with a heap of instruments to tell Fractured Fables. Engaging youngsters with prompts plucked from a hat and input along the way, well-known stories take unexpected twists with this playful duo.

Shows for youngsters are free, but Book & Puppet’s Mangled Myths, put on for an adult audience on Saturday nights, costs $3 plus a dice roll. These storytelling events offer the (optional) opportunity to participate in retelling a myth, a sometimes messy, sometimes musical show of creative collaboration. For these revelries, Migdal breaks out the big, elaborate handmade puppets—needle-felted, garbed in little costumes, with expressive faces and artful details.

Book & Puppet Company’s second location at Easton Public Market makes a perfect venue to co-host the First Taste series with authors of new cookbooks, like One-Hour Cheese with Claudia Lucero in February. Check out Book & Puppet for shows, classes in puppeteering and music and puppet parties, along with all your book-buying needs.

American Refugee

JANUARY 31–MARCH 24

Kicking off at the end of this month, The Alternative Gallery’s American Refugee display is a relevant and touching experience that sheds a light on the very current topic of immigration and migration that the world is grappling with. In-house curators sought work from talented international contacts as well as seasoned local artists that have a strong voice. The exhibit explores the stunning creations of more than 20 different Latin and South American artists from across 12 nations, such as Uruguay, Colombia and El Salvador through traditional, modern and political art. An expanse of mediums will be represented beyond the customary forms of visual art to include unique forms of expression, such as photojournalism and art installations.

Accompanying the art pieces, the display promises to engage the senses through traditional folk music and food. The immersive experience focuses on the recent history of the world, and zooms in to look at the mass-migration crisis taking place on the American continent, south of the U.S. border. While the crisis has existed for decades, American Refugee aims to draw more attention to the dire circumstances, give people a deeper understanding of the situation and enlighten Americans on the importance of providing asylum for others.

DOLCE SWEET CAFÉ Vintage, Chic & Sweet

The inside of Dolce Sweet Café resembles something along the lines of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, with lollipops hanging from the ceiling and a zany assortment of treats on display. There are often classic movies and music playing, adding to the fun and relaxed vibe of the place. The café offers freshly brewed coffee, cappuccinos, twelve flavors of homemade gelato, artisan truffle bars, fudge, hot soups and other delicious and locally sourced products. Owner Stephanie Varone cites the gelato as the fan favorite, but she personally recommends trying affogato, a coffee-based dessert made with a shot of espresso and a hearty scoop of gelato. When describing the café’s assortment, Varone says, “We really want to carry items that you can’t find just anywhere, and we aim to make the experience worth the trip.”

Robyn Freeman embraced the vegan lifestyle 10 years ago, but once she’d made the switch, she became frustrated by the lack of vegan options readily available to curb her sweet tooth. That’s where the concept for No Whey was born. “It was a triple-dog dare of sorts that I just could not walk away from,” says Freeman. “Within a nanosecond, I had made this a full-blown mission to prove that vegan desserts could be just as good, if not better, than non-vegan.” Freeman draws inspiration from her favorite childhood sweets, but she credits her husband, Dan, as her “flavor muse.” Fan favorites include their chocolate peanut-butter caramel cake with cream cheese frosting, toasted almond coconut cranberry cookie, carrot cake and lemon cheesecake.

No Whey does not have a storefront, as they work off of online orders and have seven local partners across the Valley who carry their goods. “The concept of No Whey was to partner with existing restaurants and coffee shops through the Valley [to] make our desserts more accessible than having only one storefront,” says Freeman. “We also offer meetups and a delivery service for custom orders, whether it be for a party, wedding, corporate deliveries or just a standard No Whey craving!”

TREXLERTOWN MOVIE TAVERN

Founded in 2001, the Movie Tavern is revolutionizing the way people experience cinema with in-theater dining, drinks and luxurious seating. Since the original opening in Texas and Georgia, Movie Tavern has expanded to 23 theaters, including the recent Trexlertown location! Christy Razo, director of sales, says, “What drives us is our fans, and we strive to make the movie-going experience unique and special for everyone.”

When attending a Movie Tavern screening, guests are encouraged to reserve their seats ahead of time via the app or website. Once seated, a push of the seat’s red button will summon a server for menus and ordering. All are welcome to check out the Tavern Bar, which doesn’t require a ticket purchase and is the perfect spot to watch a sporting event on-screen. What’s more, the Tavern Bar crafts specialty cocktails and dishes, and tailors trivia themes based on major film releases, so there’s always something new to check out.

Pamela Haas

Pamela Haas’s husband was diagnosed with earlyonset Alzheimer’s in February of 2006 after finding a mutation on his fourteenth chromosome, and that became her call to action. Their neurologist suggested getting involved with a local support group of the Alzheimer’s Association, which jumpstarted Haas’s involvement in the charity.

Shortly after joining, the support group formed a team to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Haas volunteered to be the captain for their team, and their group, the Angels Against Alzheimer’s, has been the number one contributing team for three years now.

“When you become involved, you learn of just how many people you know who have a loved one with some type of dementia. I try to be a source of support for those people and direct them to the Alzheimer’s Association and any other resources that were of help to my husband and me,” she says. “I recently read in the Alzheimer’s Association newsletter that they are looking for additional help, so I hope to be able to expand my volunteering for

this organization and to use my experience to help others going through this tough journey.”

Haas’s husband passed away eight years after his diagnosis, but still, Haas continues to be an incredibly strong individual who aids her organization and provides support for those within the community. “Do not be afraid to reach out to the Alzheimer’s Association for help if you have the disease or have a loved one with it. You should not be embarrassed by it. It’s a disease that does not discriminate against age, education, race or anything else. It’s a tough journey that no one can do by themselves,” she says. “As the disease progresses, a caregiver needs assistance, support and respite from the responsibility.”

The Alzheimer’s Association offers a wide variety of programs and services to assist those living with the disease—or a related dementia—and their families. They provide a 24/7 helpline where people can get information on resources. They also advocate for legislative reform and funding, and aim to educate through their support groups a nd workshops.

Latin American Fusion

When Juan Martinez came to America as a teenager, he brought with him a fervor for cooking and a love for Latin-inspired food. In college, Martinez majored in finance, but after 10 years, he decided to revisit his passion. In 2011, the first Don Juan Mex Grill opened in Easton’s College Hill neighborhood, and the business has since spanned to include five locations in Pennsylvania. “We put forth a lot of love every day, and I think people can tell how authentic our care is. We bring in fresh ingredients, support local vendors and give back to the community,” says Martinez. “When I came from the Caribbean, someone helped and impacted me by offering a hand. I know how much it meant to me when I needed the assistance. I wouldn’t be here without the generosity of the American people.”

The Cantina location in Macungie is the chain’s first full-service spot, and the only one to serve alcohol. Martinez creates the menu based on the Latin staples he grew up eating, keeping true to his vision of Latin-American fusion. The Grill’s menu focuses on what captures the spirit of Latin food, such as rice and beans, empanadas, tacos, the cantina’s freshly made margaritas and—Martinez’s personal favorite—the Cuban sandwich.

CONVERSATIONAL THREADS FIBER ARTS STUDIO

BY

An avid crocheter, disappointed by the variety of natural fiber yarns available in stores and online, Cindy Fitzpatrick set out to open shop, specializing in her own, hand-picked quality threads.

PHOTOGRAPHY
ANDREW TOMASINO

CINDY FITZPATRICK

Owner

Tell us about what prompted you to open a shop specializing in yarn and fiber!

I have always been involved in some creative endeavor or another in the fiber arts, having learned to knit, crochet and sew as a little girl, but nearly 16 years ago, my father passed away and my mother was determined to stay living alone in her own home. My sisters and I felt she needed something to keep her busy and mentally active and, since she had been a knitter and a crocheter all her life, I got her involved in knitting scarves. This was during the big knitted-scarf craze of the early 2000s, in the days of fun fur and all the other novelty yarns. After a year or two of novelty knitting, she was ready to move on to more traditional yarns.

I began looking for natural fiber yarns, and at that time, the hand-dyed yarn movement was taking off, but I was unable to find the yarns for which I was looking— especially the hand-dyed ones—in the Lehigh Valley. I began looking for hand-dyed yarns on the internet, but that proved to be a disappointing experience because of the nature of hand-dyed yarn, each skein being slightly different. When you add in the consideration of the involvement of cameras and monitors in posting, and seeing those yarns via the computer, the picture of the yarn you see on the computer may not be anything like what eventually turns up in your mailbox. Since at that time I was an empty nester with time on my hands and a need for more social contact, opening a yarn shop was the obvious way for me to supply and be supplied with the yarns I was having such a hard time obtaining, while every day having the opportunity to talk with others who would share my love of fiber arts. So, with the actual and financial support of my husband, Conversational Threads Fiber Arts Studio was born in 2009, supplying me and the local fiber art community with conversation and threads!

The quality, exclusivity and wide variety of the products you sell are what set Conversational Threads apart. How do you go about acquiring hard-to-find yarns, fibers, needles, etc.?

We have always been a strictly natural-fiber shop, with a focus on eco-friendly, humane and fair trade yarns and rovings for spinning into yarn. With the huge growth of the large independent dyer/hand-dyeing segment of the market, it has become a constant search for the newest up-and-coming indie dyer that will wholesale to a brick-and-mortar shop, all while maintaining an up-to-date supply of commercially dyed, quality yarn in all weights. While most of the commercial yarn companies have representatives that bring their offerings to me for selecting our commercial yarns, I search Instagram posts for new indie dyers constantly, look for new offerings at fiber festivals—such as the huge New York Sheep and Wool Festival— and travel to Europe yearly to find the relatively unknown hand-dyed yarn and accessories that are hard to get in the U.S.

Is there an item or brand that continues to fly off the shelves?

For the last several years, hand-dyed yarn has far outsold commercially

dyed yarn, but currently, we are seeing somewhat of a move away from the knitting of accessories, which has been huge for years, towards a return to knitting of sweaters and a corresponding increase in the selling of some of the commercial yarns that would be more appropriate for certain [kinds] of those sweaters (think cabled sweaters where the cables wouldn’t show up well in a multicolored yarn). The other thing we have a hard time keeping in stock is knitting needles. We have many hundreds of needles in stock at any one time, but nowadays, knitting needles come in so many materials—wood, metal, acrylic, graphite—and shapes, sizes and colors that I am placing large orders every month to keep our stock well-filled. As a result, we are known to have the most complete supply of knitting needles and crochet hooks around and have become the go-to shop for needles.

Share a little bit about Kiva and how the shop supports its mission.

Kiva’s mission as a nonprofit microfinance organization is “to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty,” and it is the charity we choose to support as a shop. Kiva allows us to lend money to low-income, underserved

entrepreneurs in 86 countries. As often as possible, we choose people who are in some sort of fiber-related business to receive our loans. More recently, we have also been funding fresh-water equipment in tiny African villages. We raise this money by holding events, such as our yearly shop fashion show to benefit the organization, and by donating any money collected from customers who offer it, be it in response to help received on their projects or just in general.

What types of classes and events do you host at Conversational Threads?

As far as classes go, we have weekly class sessions for knitting and crocheting in which a customer can learn anything, from the very basics of beginning to knit or crochet to helping with a specific pattern or technique or fixing a mistake on a project. Beyond the weekly classes, we also have specialty classes held periodically to learn how to do a specific technique or project. For instance, we are lucky enough to have a fairly well-known knitwear designer on staff, Lavanya Patricella, whose specialty is brioche knitting, and her classes are often requested. We also have an excellent weaving teacher with a degree in textiles whose classes fill practically the minute they are posted. And we do occasionally get guest teachers

to run specialty classes as we did recently for Icelandic lopapeysa sweaters with Ragga Eiriksdottir from Iceland.

As for events, along with the previously mentioned annual fashion show, we run bus trips to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival and to the Vogue Knitting Live! event held in New York City each January—the latter at which we as a shop are a vendor. Other events are often added to the calendar as the mood strikes us, or as the requests become numerous. We are always up for some fun!

Any advice to someone interested in taking up knitting, weaving or crocheting?

Go for it! We were all beginners at some point, and anyone helping you at Conversational Threads would make sure you never leave the shop feeling inadequate to the task. And while it would be a little more expensive to work with our supplies rather than those from the big-box stores, the enjoyment of your project will definitely be greater for using quality supplies. When you consider the cost versus hours of entertainment received, it really is a very inexpensive form of entertainment. That being said, though, we will give you a hand with your project should you need one, no matter where—or how long ago—you purchased your supplies.

Tell us about ravelry.com and the community you helped cultivate!

As far as I am concerned, ravelry.com is the best thing ever invented for knitters, or any kind of fiber artist for that matter. Ravelry.com is a free online social networking site where approximately 8 million members share projects, ideas, discussions and keep track of their yarn, tools and patterns. There is a pattern database of over 800,000 patterns—most available for sale, some for free and some just informational. It is the place to find the perfect pattern, see how it turned out for others who have made it and keep track of your notes for your own project.

Beyond that, there is a generous sharing of information of all kinds on the discussion forums, and on those forums the information shared by other yarn shop owners certainly helped me to avoid many pitfalls when I was planning to open the shop. I don’t know that I could say I helped to cultivate a community for ravelry.com, but I most certainly heartily recommend using it!

What’s on the horizon for Conversational Threads as we enter 2019?

My goal for every year is to have an appropriate amount of yarn for the size of the shop, but I am an overzealous buyer and so we have yarn everywhere! But

seriously, there are exciting things on the horizon for the shop. Just to name a few things: At the end of January we will be in New York City, vending at the prestigious Vogue Knitting Live! annual event. In February, we have a worldfamous knitting pattern designer, Stephen West, coming to the shop to teach a couple of classes and do a special exclusive event with Lavanya, and we are very excited for that. During the rest of the year, we will be doing a number of trunk shows with some excellent indie dyers, and we will be adding more and more hand-dyed yarn beauties to our regular stock as I discover them. I also have a number of other new, really fun, social knitting events in mind that are still in the planning stages, and we are always adding to our interesting class offerings. We are never standing still at Conversational Threads!

ORGANIZATIONAL TIPS

FOR THE NEW YEAR

With decades of combating clutter as a Certified Professional Organizer and Productivity Consultant under her belt, Diane Albright has seen the trend toward tidiness explode. “Years ago, clients would just want help with paper management, or with the clothes closet.

ask the expert

Nowadays, they want the whole house organized,” she says. It feels amazing to live life from an organized HQ—here’s Albright’s advice on making that a realistic goal for the new year.

One Thing at a Time

The kitchen, bedroom (mainly for the clothes factor) and bathroom are three central living spaces that can make the difference in how you live your life, but if it’s papers in your home office or calamitous kids’ rooms frazzling you, take aim at what’s bugging you most and mark an hour on your calendar to work on it. “Don’t tell yourself you’ll spend all day on it,” Albright says. “You won’t.” And once you’ve torn everything out of your closet and lost steam, you’ll feel worse than when you started. Assign yourself an hour at a time, and you’re more likely to feel inspired to persist.

Fridge Fix

When it comes to the kitchen, many people have a hard time keeping track of what’s in the fridge, which leads to wasting food—and money! “If somebody’s looking for sour cream and they don’t find it,” Albright warns, “they will buy more.”

Her advice? Designate areas of the fridge for certain foods and label them clearly. Milk always goes in the same place, leftovers (a top priority before they perish) are always at eye level in clear containers. “You should be able to go into the fridge with your eyes closed and find what you’re looking for.”

And for family members trying to put back the spicy mustard in a different place every time, there’s a condiments label to light the way.

Keeping Up with Your Clothes

Having a mountain of clothes we don’t wear seems like a perennial problem. To make whittling away easier, turn all your hangers one way at the beginning of a season and each time you wear an item, switch it, so you can easily see which haven’t been touched all winter long.

Take it one type of clothing at a time—a pants perusal is a lot more manageable than tackling the closet as a whole.

Whatever your clothing storage system, strive to be able to see everything you have in a drawer when you open it or hanging up when you behold the closet space.

Bare Bathroom

Do you walk into the bathroom in the morning to a jumble of products and hair tools all over the counter? What a rude awakening! Albright advises no more than one bin or drawer (maybe an extra for the cosmetics collection) stocked with everything you need for your morning routine.

Pull it out, put it away and you’re done. “If you start your day with no clutter,” Albright says, “you’ll feel like you want to keep putting everything away all day long.”

Tidiness Is a Team Effort

Any organizational system thrives on sustainability. Like training a dog, everyone in the house needs to be on the same page, and it shouldn’t be hard to follow along. “A friend, relative or neighbor should be able to come in and find something and put it away,” Albright says.

Store things in intuitive places, label generously and get the household in on a nightly 10-minute Clutter Patrol. If five people are picking up after themselves, that’s almost an hour of cleaning built right into each day!

The Magic of Household Management

While we tend to think of organization mainly in terms of merciless, cathartic purges of uninspiring items, household management is another avenue to make life less overwhelming.

Save time and money by settling on a weekly routine for meal planning and laundry day, and one spot and time for assessing monthly bills. Albright keeps her bills in a greeting card organizer with a slot for each month, with envelopes and postage stamps in the same zone.

Planning a week’s worth of meals and writing up a shopping list the night before allows time to remember additional items and helps prevent buying random things you don’t need.

Bring in the Pros

If you’ve organized everything and had it fall back into shambles time and again, it might be that you’re missing how to make the system sustainable. A professional organizer knows how to set you up for success.

Call them in to tackle just the closet, the office or the fridge. “Then you’ll get it,” Albright says, “and you can copy it elsewhere, even copy it at work.” Handing over your house for a total makeover just might transform your lifestyle. Clients say once their home gets organized, they can’t stand clutter.

What is one piece of fitness/health-related advice you wish you could give to everyone?

Don’t be afraid to get started. It may be intimidating seeing all these people that are in really good shape and strong, lifting heavy weights, but we all started at ground zero. We have all had to build ourselves up through consistency and hard work. Anyone can do it, and don’t be afraid to ask for help!

What is the best exercise to get rid of belly fat?

There is no best exercise. The real answer? NUTRITION. The only way to lose fat is to be in a caloric deficit, which requires focus on what you’re eating every day. Unfortunately, you cannot decide where you lose fat from first, so stay consistent and trust the process and you will see the fat loss you are looking for.

How often would you recommend someone work out?

I would recommend about 3–5 days of exercise per week. If you’re new to the exercise scene, I would say stay more around three, until your body begins to adapt. For those experienced lifters and exercise enthusiasts, five days a week is doable. I personally work out five days a week and use my two days off to focus on mobility exercises and getting my body recovered for the workouts to come.

East Stroudsburg University, BA in Broadcasting

What is one thing you’ve accomplished in your training regimen that you’re most proud of?

Back when I began working at FTF, we attended a kettlebell certification session. During the training, we were instructed to press a heavy kettlebell over our head, and I was quickly humbled when I was unable to press a 40-pound kettlebell overhead. Now, after completing plenty of our FTF workouts, I can say that I am able to press a 45-pound kettlebell! It’s a great marker of my progress that I continuously use as I do upper body work.

What advice do you have for someone on a plateau in their progress?

Don’t give up. Consistency is key. Keep your body moving, but try switching up your routine. Lift heavier weights. Try sprints or high-intensity interval training instead of long-distance runs. Perhaps even more importantly, check your diet! You may need more or less of something, but it’s best to talk to a nutritionist for specific plans to fill in any gaps in your diet.

What is one myth you wish people would stop believing?

There is a widely believed myth that women who lift heavy weights are going to look like a man. Trust me, ladies—you won’t! Bodybuilders commit their lives to lifting extremely heavy weight and eating a lot of food. Unless you’re going out and lifting 300–400 pounds, you are not going to be “bulky.” Please don’t be afraid of weight training. It allows you to sculpt your body—and you won’t look “manly.”

West Chester University, BS in

What is your favorite exercise?

Squats, because it is one of the most functional movements out there. I feel everyone should be able to perform one properly, and it’s a great indicator of longevity.

Do you recommend any kind of supplements to help clients get over the hump?

I often tend to recommend a protein supplement because most people are not meeting their daily protein requirements.

What moment of your life put you on the path to becoming a trainer?

That moment came my sophomore year of college when I was in the gym watching people exercise. I saw how poorly some people moved and I thought to myself, I wish I could help them so they don’t hurt themselves. Then I thought, wait, I can do that!

Evan

Penn State University, BS in Kinesiology

What do you love most about working at FTF?

I might be a little biased, but, I truly believe in the product we are delivering to people. After three years, I finally have the three people in place who make the perfect team and carry out my vision. And honestly, it’s their vision too. They are all in with me. I love that we have a place where people look forward to coming to see us. It’s a positive environment that doesn’t push people into things. We are the first personal training center in the Lehigh Valley to offer affordable services with absolutely no contracts. I think it’s a testament to my belief in what we do and never resting on our laurels. We work hard to earn our clients’ trust. Finally, at the end of the day, we use real science to approach health and fitness. We don’t use gimmicks or tactics to trick people into being at our place. A sound training program, nutritional counseling, frequent testing for progress and a kickass staff to help carry it all out is all you need.

What burns more calories? Cardio or weight training?

This is no contest. Weight training is going to get you where you want to be if your goal is to lose body fat. Fun fact: FTF doesn’t have one single piece of cardio equipment. The amount of time people spend on those things is mind boggling to me. Fun fact number two: You can be more effective mixing in weight training in a circuit in half of the time you can spend on a treadmill or something similar. Muscle mass is built by weight training. More muscle means more calories burned throughout the day from a raised metabolism. What does all of that lead to? A leaner-looking frame that everyone and their mother craves.

What moment of your life put you on the path to becoming a trainer?

I have battled my weight ever since I was a kid. It’s always been a painful part of growing up. When I got to my junior year in high school, I lost a ton of weight on my own, between playing football and working out by myself once I was able to drive. I lost 30 pounds over the course of four months. I felt so great about what I accomplished through hard work and dedication. It sparked my interest to go into a field where I help people! So, I got my certification as soon as I graduated high school and trained clients throughout college. The rest is history.

WORTH THE WAIT THE FLYING EGG

The Flying Egg’s Dutch Baby Pancake is nicknamed Worth The Wait, and for good reason. “It takes a good 25 to 30 minutes to cook, but it’s oh so worth it!” says Cara Paredes, regional manager for 3PA Restaurant Group, which operates Valley favorites like Tapas on Main, Cachette Bistro, Urbano Mexican Kitchen & Bar and Mesa Modern Mexican.

Made with eggs, flour, butter and milk, Paredes says, “The eggs are what makes it more of a chewy pancake consistency and how it rises on the edges and perfectly falls in the middle.”

Year-round, the dish is offered with berry coulis, blueberries and powdered sugar, but Paredes explains that they often offer flavor variations based on season. “We ran a pumpkin-flavored one for fall,” she says, and gingerbread for the holiday season.

Paredes recommends pairing your pancake with a nice boozy coffee drink this season, referencing the recently featured salted caramel apple cider mimosa as a perfect pick.

THE PROPOSAL

Brett’s surprise proposal brought Alisa to the very stage where the two had first met through their community theater group. Under a spotlight with yellow rose petals scattered around them, he got down on one knee and offered his ring.

THE BIG DAY

Unpredictable weather for their December wedding was always a concern—would guests and vendors be able to make it? This worry was answered with the breathtaking beauty of snow falling throughout their winter wonderland wedding day—and every guest in attendance! Glasbern Inn provided a balance of rustic elegance and the perfect setting for both splurged-on splendor and treasured DIY touches like their photo booth, escort cards and signage. The favorite feature: an arch handcrafted by Alisa’s father, under which the couple was married.

THE PROPOSAL

Saleem met Jennifer at his sisterin-law’s 40th birthday party, and just one year later he planned an amazing Paris getaway for his proposal. On a private cruise down the Seine, their riverboat stopped under the lights of the Eiffel Tower and Saleem asked Jennifer to be his wife.

THE BIG DAY

Following their wedding at St. Thomas More Church, the party moved to The Lavender Farmette in keeping with their French theme for a sumptuous cocktail hour. The reception was held on the bank of the Little Lehigh Creek on the site of the couple’s future home, with hundreds of lights twinkling along the water’s edge, in the trees and on the rippling water. Guests passed under an arche de fleurs made up of hundreds of cut flowers, and made their way down a catwalk to the riverside tent where dancing and celebration lasted late into the night.

THE PROPOSAL

Matt had long admired Jen at Bloomsburg University when they finally met at a friend’s birthday party. He went on to propose amid the wildflowers and waterfall of Colorado’s Denver Botanic Gardens. Playing the long game, Matt then surprised Jen with secretly captured footage of the proposal just hours before their vows.

THE BIG DAY

Snow flurries brought in the brisk morning of their bright November wedding day, but guests were game to bundle up in the cold for the couple’s dream ceremony outside in the sunshine. Tears appeared in Matt’s eyes as the bride came down the aisle, and her sister Kristen read e.e. cummings’s “I carry your heart with me.” Simple candles and greenery in the reception space let the wall-to-wall windows shine, and after the couple closed the night of dancing with a last dance surrounded by friends and family, they departed to their honeymoon cabin with a sparkler send-off.

THE PROPOSAL

Good friends in high school, Rachel and Steven reconnected over Facebook years later. During a winter trip to Peru, Rachel thought her altitude sickness would throw off Steven’s proposal plans, but when she got distracted by a cute alpaca he surprised her with the ring.

THE BIG DAY

They tied the knot at the lovely Lake House Inn on Lake Nockamixon on a summer-warm fall day, walking down the aisle together with the last minute and indispensable addition of a string trio. Guests from as far away as Australia and Hong Kong were wowed by the reception’s wine tasting and fresh guacamole bar, floored when the couple showed off their covertly choreographed first dance. Hilarious games like Guess the Groom by His Butt kept the party roaring until the sparkler send-off. Close friends and family stayed to wind down by the firepit with s’mores, basking in a beautiful day.

Bella Bridesmaids

DESIGNER DRESSES, PERSONAL STYLING, INSPIRATION, COMPLIMENTARY FITTINGS & MORE

Erika Berardinucci, owner of Bella Bridesmaids Allentown, realized that the Lehigh Valley needed a showroom that focused primarily on the bridal party. “At Bella Bridesmaids Allentown, we know that every bride has her own vision and each bridesmaid is unique. I want to give the bride the feeling, when she walks through our doors, that we will help her find that perfect dress for her bridesmaids.”

Berardinucci fell in love with all things wedding after she planned her own in 2015. “I knew that I wanted to tap into this industry, with still being able to be a mom, wife and my own boss.”

Bella Bridesmaids Allentown opened in November 2018, in the heart of Downtown Allentown. The showroom is across the street from the beautifully restored Vault 634 and around the corner from the PPL Center.

Bella Bridesmaids has the largest collection of bridesmaid dresses from the world’s leading designers in all of their Bella showrooms, from Jenny Yoo, Hayley Paige, Watters, Monique Lhuillier and many more. “What I love about Bella is the versatility in all of our designers,” says Berardinucci. “From lavish chiffon gowns, to convertible

jumpsuits, to floor-length beaded gowns, our styles are ones that ladies truly love to wear again and again.”

Bella Bridesmaids allows brides and bridesmaids to experience their virtual showrooms across the country. First, the bride and a few of her bridesmaids attend the initial in-shop appointment. It is here that the small group will work directly with a stylist to determine the colors and styles they’re looking for. After, the stylist will put together a virtual showroom, inviting the bride and bridesmaids to weigh in on the dresses. Essentially, everything the bride saw in the store that day, she will be able to access online, all in one place. Then, her bridesmaids can vote on their top dress of choice. The showroom keeps track of important dates, clocking in how many days the group has to select a dress and order it before the big day.

It’s that easy!

“With the way our generation shops, creating the virtual showroom brings in that online feel,” says Berardinucci. “People want the virtual element and the in-store experience, and we believe it’s the best way to bring the two together.” She and her team at Bella Bridesmaids Allentown are ready to help bring every bridal party’s vision to life!

Steel Club

ICONIC SETTINGS, EXPERT STAFF, INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION

Steel Club is an iconic landmark located in Hellertown. Rich in history and tradition, it continues to be a private membership-based club, but with the addition of the Fee-Free Dining Membership. With no monthly fee or monthly minimum, everyone can enjoy the dining venues and events at Steel Club. Three new Golf Membership categories better suit the lifestyles of today’s families, and include: After 1 p.m. for $300/month, After 3 p.m. for $200/month and After 5 p.m. for $100/month.

Besides the new name, new signage and new apparel, the Bar/Restaurant (now known as the Beam Yard) underwent a complete transformation. Gone is the uptight and stuffy dining room. The restaurant now features a wall of glass doors, treating diners to an unobstructed view of the patio and 18-hole championship golf course. In the center of the room is a hundred-foot bar with a huge steel truss hanging over the center, acting as a liquor and TV display. Along the sides and back wall, privacy booth seating provides a cozy and comfortable dining experience, complemented by the Eugene Grace Room. This dining room dials up the sophistication, with linen-draped tables on the weekends and a lovely fireplace.

Steel Club maintains an extensive social media campaign. Content is fresh and updated daily. Instagram feeds (@steel.club) and Facebook pages (@fairwaysfoodfun), along with a fully integrated real-time website keeps users informed with current menu specials and weekly events.

The alley between the back of the main clubhouse and annex building is being reinvented. The new, enclosed concourse (dubbed Bistro Street) will be a café-style dining and entertaining venue, welcoming patrons of the swimming pool, the soon-to-be-built year-round driving range and other athletic and retail facilities. The new driving range is for players honing their golf skills and also those who wish to enjoy group entertainment, food and drink with the latest golf-ball tracer technology. The annex building will contain sports training, including personal and group instruction, a fitness center and physical therapy.

Two words: sweet and genuine. Oh yeah, and talented as all get-out!

In the photography business since 1998, Alison Conklin and her husband, Geoff, have now worked together for over 13 years shooting weddings and editorials. Their magical way of blending into the background during a shoot lets everyone live in the moment and forget that a photographer is even in the room. Actually, two of them.

Since 2010, they’ve won the “The Knot Best of Weddings” nine years running, and their photos have been featured in Brides magazine, The Knot magazine, Destination Weddings & Honeymoons magazine and graced the cover of Martha Stewart Weddings magazine.

Geoff is an insane Philly sports fan and Al loves traveling to new places and cooking. They recently bought an RV named Beezus and plan to take her on road trips along with their teenage sons and two lovable Great Danes in those rare moments of freedom from their highly scheduled, infinitely rewarding professional lives. C’mon, who doesn’t love love?

Roth Formal Wear building at 10th and Turner Streets in Allentown.

Sue Ames features popular new styles—all at outlet prices! Bridal gowns range from $99 to $699. They also carry styles for bridesmaids, flower girls, mothers of the bride, quinceañera and proms—again, at outlet prices. For convenience, a seamstress with over 30 years of experience in alterations works on site.

Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Stop by and see why Sue Ames is highly successful in the Lehigh Valley. To learn more, follow along on Facebook and Instagram.

Mary H. Ott

OWNER, WITH LOVE MARY

When asked why she chose the name With Love Mary for her salon, owner Mary Ott says, “It started on a whim, a name I decided to use on Instagram to showcase my unique styles.” The name soon became very personal, just like the distinctive styles she creates for clients. An expert stylist and hair colorist, Ott is known for custom, multi-dimensional hair color that will delight and amplify each individual’s unique style. She does it all with love and care. “When people leave the salon,” Ott says, “they go with a piece of me, and I send them off with love.”

Monica Yurconic- Groff

OWNER, ROSS PLANTS & FLOWERS

Ross Plants & Flowers is not an everyday floral shop... it is a shop that is small, but mighty.

And owner Monica Yurconic-Groff states, “Good things come in small packages.” Small in this case means the following: Clients get the one-on-one attention they deserve; Ross gets to know their clients and what they are envisioning; Ross limits the number of weddings designed in a weekend so clients get the “best” of them; and no wedding detail gets left undone. Ross Plants & Flowers loves what they do, and they enjoy sharing their passion with all the brides and grooms they touch. A wedding day is one of the most special days in a lifetime, and Ross embraces the excitement being felt and takes on every wedding as it were their own. Every detail matters, from the quality of the flowers they use to the longevity of their floral bouquets to the exact placement of the floral designs to bring their client’s vision to life. Take a look at Ross Plants & Flowers’ website and see a gallery of their work. Then give them a call and schedule a free consultation today!

She’s growing fast. So are we.

The region’s leader in pediatric care has a new name: Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital

Thanks to the Reilly family, the only children’s hospital in the area will be able to provide even more quality care – all under one roof.

We already have the most pediatric doctors in the region – plus a surgery center and ER designed just for kids. And now, with the Reillys’ gift, we will further enhance our neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as expand our pediatric surgical programs.

Like you, we want only the best for our kids. Which is why we’re committed to providing the highest level of care possible, right here, close to home.
