Dog (and cat) days of summer Here at Susquehanna Style, we love our furry friends, which is why our pet issue is one of our favorites of the year. We get just as excited as you in watching the leaderboards for our annual pet contest and gushing over the cuteness. As we continue to work remotely, we’ve also gotten to know our fellow colleague’s pets quite well. Anyone else feel as if your pet has a sixth sense and knows when to join the Zoom calls? I think we can agree, we all welcome some extra sharing of pet photos during this tough year—turn to page 31 to see this year’s pet contest winners. Planning for the August issue also means planning summer fun, and while things may look a little
different this year, we still plan to make the most of it. Looking to take a local day trip? Check out this month’s Talk of the Town highlighting Lebanon County’s Mt. Gretna. If you prefer a Sunday mini-staycation—how about a crab feast with all of the essentials from Harrisburg’s Harbour House Crabs? Turn to page 28 for an inside look as they celebrate their 20th year in business. Don’t forget the dessert! Susan B Cooking has you covered with summer sweets recipes on page 25 to help you beat the heat. Whatever your plans, we hope you are able to make the most of this summer! Wishing you all the fun (and safety) this season!

Fluff Your Pup! BY M. DIANE MCCORMICK PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA KRAFT
Duke the rescue Basenji-ish dog loves to see Sandra Krum arrive.
“Duke gets so excited when Sandy’s at the door,” says Duke’s owner, Rob Jones of Hummelstown. “Sandy’s so sweet. And she comes straight to your house. It doesn’t get much better than that.” Not all dogs are eager for the prospect of a bath and toenail clipping, of course. But Krum’s grooming business, Fluff Your Pup Mobile Grooming, Training, and Fitness, celebrates all things canine. Traveling around parts of Lebanon and Dauphin counties, Krum spiffs up five or six dogs a day. Each session ends with a photo op featuring the dog in a tie or hair bow– and maybe a Mohawk. Krum turned her love of dogs into a full-time business in 2015. She was in her early 50s, wondering how to transition into a second career. Then her previous company offered a generous severance if she were to voluntarily separate.
“Wow,” she thought. “This is kind of like a sign here.” She was looking into dog grooming when a woman with a mobile service invited her on a ride-along. Those eight hours flew like eight minutes. Friends that night marveled at Krum’s big grin.
16
SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | AUGUST 2020
“Every time we walked on the roads, he’d do that clickety-clack sound,” he says. Krum caps off the grooming experience with a photo shoot, complete with seasonal backdrop, such as a summertime beach scene. She wanted to dress the dogs in something different than traditional bandannas, so every dog wears a distinctive tie or bow which she makes. “Over the nine weeks that COVID happened, I was making a lot of ties and bow ties,” she says. Those photos and a happy comment appear on Fluff Your Pup’s highly entertaining Facebook page. “I caught Duke napping when I was brushing him,” Krum notes. Or Dunkin the goldendoodle wears sunglasses while showing off his hair styled in a Mohawk. “He just stands there,” Krum admits. Dunkin’s owner commented, “I can’t stand it! You are so awesome to my Dood.” Krum feels fortunate that she entered the mobile grooming business at a time when there wasn’t much competition, but she’s happy to share expertise and time with others interested in the field. “Somebody helped me out that way, so I like to help others out,” she says. Krum lives in Jonestown, Lebanon County. When she’s not too tired from grooming dogs all day–and the work is physically taxing–Krum likes to ride her bicycle. The youngest of her three grown children lives on her street on a family turkey farm. As for that mid-life career change, there are no regrets. “I never realized you could have a job that you love. I just thought that work was work. It’s a whole lot different when you have something you’re passionate about. I don’t mind working six days a week because I love what I do.”
Fluff Your Pup A friend gifted her with a four-day workshop in Florida with Cesar Milan, where she learned behavioral-based training.
717-756-2561
fluffyourpup.com
“When you’re new in grooming, you get the dog that nobody else wants,” she says. “The places where the dog snaps or bites won’t groom them anymore. I got a lot of those.” She found a truck of her own, a dream unit with table, tub, heat and air conditioning, and water heater. But the investment was not cheap, and she had exactly one appointment. She posted her number on Facebook, and friends shared it. Calls started coming in. Within two weeks, she made enough for her first truck payment. In eight months, her book was full, and she stopped taking new clients. “Ever since, it’s been my dream come true,” she says. “Dogs are my life. Dogs are my passion.” Customers rarely want their dogs groomed in Westminster Kennel Club-style show cuts. They simply want their four-legged family members to be cool and comfortable. Jones lets Duke’s nails tell him when it’s time to schedule Krum’s visit. He was happy to see Krum return from the COVID-19 shutdown, because his DIY attempts to trim Duke’s nails fell short. summer beauty
101 BY SAMANTHA QUISGARD
Between the heat and the humidity, summer can be a tough time when it comes to achieving a flawless look. We sat down with Maggie King from MKUP The Beauty Studio to get some essential summer beauty tips and tricks.
What makeup trends are hot this summer? Glowing/bronzed looks with strategically placed highlights are timeless. The matte skin look is out—skin should look like skin and have a natural glow and finish. Cream bronzers are amazing to help achieve this look. Lip and cheek stains are also versatile and easy-to-use additions for any style.
How do I achieve the no-makeup fresh look for summer? Try going for less makeup and more natural enhancements. Opt for oil-free tinted moisturizers in place of full coverage foundation and heavy setting powders. Try

lash extensions, lash lifts and tints, and brow tinting that will last you several weeks and eliminate the amount of daily makeup products needed.
Where should I focus my attention for skin care in the summer?
How do I keep my makeup from running down my face in the heat?
Not sleeping in your makeup and really cleansing your face is key. You’re perspiring more, so your skin needs a good clean. SPF during the day is a must. Try opting for oil-free, face specific SPF’s to avoid clogging your pores. Other favorites for the summer months include cooling eye creams, BB and CC creams with SPF, dark spot correctors, and iced face/eye rollers that you can keep in your fridge for a refreshing at-home treatment.
Use silicone-based primers and oil free moisturizers. You can use a lightweight translucent Hyaluronic setting powder to set makeup in place to help it last longer. Oil blotting sheets are also fantastic to remove oil and perspiration when you’re on-the-go.
How do I make my blowout What is the one product you last longer during humid would recommend to every- weather? one for the warmer months? Invest in some good products! Root lift spray, Besides oil-free SPF, all day, everyday, blotting papers are an inexpensive musthave and can be purchased at your go-to beauty store. A cheap dupe alternative? Cigarette rolling papers do the trick!
heat protectant, and smoothing oils can help flyaways and unruly hair from returning to their natural texture or frizzing.
Make It Unique! Make It Fit Your Style! Make It Yours!
I get too hot with my hair down in the summer. Any tips for up-styles other than the classic pony? Try sprucing up the messy top buns by incorporating barrettes, headbands, resin/ clips, and scrunchies to add personal touch and show your style. Adding additional texture with texture sprays and hair crimping can also help take your style to the next level.

GET SET WITH YOUR VET Overall, pet health begins with your choice in veterinarian. “My number one tip is to find a vet you trust who’s open to discussing your concerns about things regarding pet care that you’ve heard or seen online,” says Katie Berlin, DVM, an Associate Veterinarian with Shiloh Veterinary Hospital. “There’s so much information out there and a lot of it is well-intentioned, but just not accurate. Vets do what we do because we love your pets too and want them to be healthy.”
PARASITE PREVENTION Protecting your pet from parasites is one of the best ways to protect and nurture your pet’s health, says Dr. Berlin. “In Central PA, it’s not a matter of if a dog will be exposed to Lyme, it’s a matter of when. The vaccines are extremely helpful but true protection means tick control as well. Ticks hibernate in the cold, but they will come out even in 40 degrees, so prevention is a year-round necessity in this area.”
HEALTHY HEARTS Dr. Berlin strongly recommends heartworm preventative as well. “Heartworm prevention is absolutely needed even though our incidence of heartworm is low here in Central PA. It’s not zero—we see a handful of heartworm positive dogs in each of our hospitals every year—and treatment is risky and expensive. Importantly, the monthly heartworm preventative also deworms pets monthly for hookworms and roundworms, which can be passed to humans.”
QUALITY FLEA PREVENTION IS THE CAT’S MEOW Protecting your pets against parasites applies to cat owners as well. In fact, Dr. Berlin recommends parasite prevention for all feline patients. “Cats can get fleas even if they live indoors with no dogs in the house because fleas can hitch a ride on you.” And she recommends obtaining all preventatives from a veterinarian rather than a discount store. “Cheaper products are not usually as effective and sometimes not as safe,” Berlin says.

Get Crackin’! BY KAREN HENDRICKS PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA KRAFT
Carryout is king during these pandemic times. When the carryout is king crab— or Maryland’s famous blue crabs—even better for area seafood lovers. The success of Harbour House Crabs is no fish story or fisherman’s tale. Jessica and Curt Engle hooked the catch of their lives 20 years ago when they founded their Harrisburg-based business. This anniversary year of 2020 seemed like perfect timing for the opening of their brand-new facility, just off Eisenhower Boulevard.
The move in March consolidated their previous locations into one larger facility where they could still offer carryout, yet have easy access to major Fed Ex hubs. That’s because central Pennsylvanians aren’t the only ones who love Harbour House’s seafood favorites. Seafood is shipped (say that fast ten times) throughout the country, every day. And they’re grateful they made the move, right before the pandemic hit. “We typically ship to all 50 states within every week,” says Curt. “We ship to California every day—plus Florida and New York—those are our top three states. Lots of customers are exMarylanders, and blue crabs are only available from the East Coast.” Those famous crabs are the heart of Harbour House’s business—their website is even “ilovecrabs.com”. “Our business is a steam-to-order business,” Curt explains. He walks through the facility, showing us the process: trucks pull into the facility with fresh catches straight from the docks along Maryland’s Eastern Shore, with additional menu favorites hailing from the Gulf Coast and North Carolina. The couple’s nephew was hard at work, sorting crabs by size, on the day we visited. Some crabs go directly into a giant outdoor steamer that holds up to 18 bushels at a time. For those of you interested in the math, there are five to eight dozen crabs in a bushel, so the steamer can rustle up between 1,000 and 1,700 crabs at a shot. Inside Harbour House, which employs a staff of 15, orders are packed with dry ice or frozen gel packs and shipped out the same day so that customers nationwide receive their hauls the very next day. One employee’s sole job is to concoct Harbour House’s delicious and generous crab cakes, made in true Maryland style with no fillers, a secret seasoning blend, and oh-so-sweet crabmeat.
24
SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | AUGUST 2020
“During the pandemic, wholesale slowed down with restaurants closing, yet our volumes went through the roof, thanks to carryout and shipping orders,” Curt says. “Our volume in April was three times our normal April.” The couple credits much of their success to their staff—many of whom have been with them for years, including family members. Curt’s mother works in accounting, and Jessica’s father is behind the wheel of their Harbour House delivery truck. They’re also grateful for relationships with Chesapeake Bay watermen, where the business began 20 years ago. “We basically were going down to Maryland, meeting people, knocking on doors, and we began by purchasing from 100 different boats,” Curt recalls. Like most married couples, especially those who operate businesses together, the Engles often finish each other’s sentences. “We no longer go looking—now they come looking for us,” Jessica adds.
Harbour House Crabs

Giant display cases hold much more than crabs— customers can feast their eyes on ginormous King Crab legs, lobster tails, clams, oysters, shrimp, and crab cakes. Harbour House’s “merch” includes all the fun accessories needed for a good oldfashioned crab feast—wooden crab mallets, brown Kraft paper, even Harbor House’s own cookbook and seasonings. “It’s not only the flavor of the crabs, but having a crab feast is about spending time with family and friends,” says Jessica. And that’s how the business got its start. Curt spent senior week of high school in Ocean City, Maryland with a group of buddies. They began a crab feast tradition that continued into their college years. Today, those same buddies still get together—now with their families. The Engles, married for 15 years, have three sons. In fact, Pennsylvania natives Curt and Jessica have known each other since childhood, and they still live in Elizabethtown where they grew up. So how did Curt turn his love of crab feasts into a business? About six years into his career as a tool and die engineer with Amp and Tyco, he launched Harbour House as “a hobby.” The couple quickly realized they could launch a full-time business. Twenty years later, Harbour House is a fixture for regular customers, many of whom the Engles know by name. They have also developed relationships with regional restaurants, supplying them with wholesale seafood. AUGUST 2020 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE

Summer Cool Down Sweets RECIPES BY SUSAN BOWSER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONOVAN WITMER
Beat the heat with delicious frozen sweets and slushies! These recipes require a little bit of advance prep, but I’m confident they’re worth it....especially when you enjoy them after a day of fun in the sun! Even better? They’re all made with only a few simple ingredients and are healthier than most traditional frozen desserts. Break out your blenders and let’s get ready to whip up some cool treats.
Greek Yogurt Pops Makes 6 popsicles 2 cups plain whole milk Greek yogurt ¼ cup maple syrup ¼ cup mini chocolate chips 1. Combine ingredients and pour into popsicle molds. 2. Freeze overnight and enjoy!

Chocolate Banana “Nice Cream” Serves 2-4 4 frozen bananas (I recommend peeling, slicing, and freezing them overnight or even a few days in advance. You can also freeze the bananas whole and peel them under cold running water.) ¼ cup cocoa powder 2 tbsp. maple syrup 1 tsp. vanilla 2 tbsp. milk (almond milk is my go-to) 1. Combine ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. I like to serve and eat this right away for a soft-serve type consistency, but you can also pop your mixture back into the freezer for a firmer treat. I find that an hour in the freezer will make it firm, but not icy.

Rosemary Lemonade Slushies Serves 2 3 cups lemonade, separated 2 sprigs fresh rosemary (more for optional garnish) ¼ cup honey ½ cup water 1. Freeze 2 cups of lemonade in ice cube trays overnight. 2. Combine ¼ cup honey, ½ cup water, and 2 sprigs fresh rosemary in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally until well combined. Remove from heat and let sit for 30 minutes. Carefully strain to remove rosemary and let cool. Store in your refrigerator until you’re ready to use. 3. Blend together frozen lemonade ice cubes, 1 cup of lemonade, and 3 tbsp. rosemary simple syrup. Store remaining rosemary simple syrup for 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator for future use. 4. Garnish with a rosemary sprig if desired, and enjoy immediately .

LEGOLASGREENLEAF OWNER: ANDI COLLISON, LANCASTER BREED: SIBERIAN HUSKY 5 YEARS OLD
Hi! My name is Legolas, I am an adult Siberian Husky, I have bright blue eyes, and I'm 85 pounds of pure love and cuddles. I love giving kisses to anyone that pets me, and enjoy a good belly scratch every now and again. I am a big help because I assist my mom with her hearing disability by alerting her to when the phone or doorbell rings, if an alarm is going off, and much more. Many times in public, you can see me with a vest on because I'm working hard and can't be distracted during that time. When I'm not working, I love sitting in the backyard and smelling the air; the smell of nature is amazing! So that's me, Legolas, loved by my family and enjoying my life to it's fullest!

Everyone entering the campus is screened with questions and a temperature check. “Our management team has given me a high level of confidence,” says Bob. That confidence extends to the Scala family, including their son who is a physician currently in a New Jersey hospital COVID-19 ward. They also have a grandson who is working in an intensive care unit in New Jersey. “They rest easy knowing that Mom and Dad are here,” according to Bob. “They know we are in a good place,” added Bob.
Another Willow Valley Communities resident, Mary Lou Frick, keeps in touch with friends from New York City. “I’m very glad I’m not there,” she says. Her friends had trouble getting groceries delivered due to increased demand. Mary Lou appreciated Willow Valley Communities’ meal delivery service. “The chefs here do an excellent job,” she says.
WILLOW VALLEY COMMUNITIES
HOW COMMUNITY LIVING FOCUSES ON SAFETY DURING COVID-19 Since the outbreak of COVID-19, people have been advised to stay away from large groups and practice social distancing. In the community setting of senior living communities, it might appear that residents there might have more to worry about than someone living in his or her own home. However, many residents of Willow Valley Communities, a premier 55 plus senior living community in Lancaster, PA, say they actually feel safer.
Investment bank Ziegler, which specializes in the senior living sector, recently validated the sentiments expressed by these Willow Valley Communities residents by citing the benefits of living in a life plan community (also known as continuing care retirement communities, or CCRCs) like Willow Valley Communities. Ziegler’s research found that life plan communities were the type of senior living communities least affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, reaffirming their stable future. In a May Ziegler CFO Hotline survey, it was revealed that eight out of 10 not-for-profit life plan communities reporting positive COVID-19 cases had fewer than 2% of residents and staff affected. Ziegler said benefits of life plan communities include safety and security, reduced social isolation, and enhanced concierge-type services to residents during the COVID-19 lockdown. These services have included grocery and meal deliveries to residents and increased online resident activities and engagement. Like all of us, Willow Valley Communities looks forward to the day when things can return to some semblance of normal. Until then, the community is carefully evaluating which of its many beautiful, award-winning amenities – from the magnificent Cultural Center, The Clubhouse, Day Spa, stunning fitness and aquatics centers, events, clubs, and culinary venues – can reopen, with safety as a priority. As opportunities for re-engagement grow, Residents express their appreciation for feeling safe, connected, and grateful while living in a large community.
“We think Willow Valley Communities is the safest place to be during a pandemic,” says resident Bob Scala, who has lived at Willow Valley Communities since 2012. His wife, Jan, agrees, “There couldn’t be a better place to be.” Both Bob and Jan have a medical background. Bob worked in medical research, and Jan was a nurse. They agree that they have been given good guidance by the leadership at Willow Valley Communities and have appreciated the regular updates shared with residents. “Jan and I are in the vulnerable population, both by age and underlying medical issues,” explains Bob. Willow Valley Communities implemented a wide variety of precautionary measures early on in the COVID-19 pandemic to protect residents. No outside visitors were permitted, and most common areas were closed. Meal and grocery delivery services were

Carol Ohlson, one of Willow Valley Communities’ newest residents, moved into her apartment in April. According to COVID-19 protocol in place at the time for incoming residents, she was asked to selfisolate for two weeks. Despite that, her new neighbors made her feel welcome. “The people here are so kind and helpful and caring,” she said. The day after she moved in was Carol’s birthday. “So many of the residents of my building sent cards under my door and helped with so much. I felt so wanted.”

CALVARY HOMES A COMMUNITY OF FAITH & FELLOWSHIP
Since March, the three colors of a traffic light—red, yellow, and green—have pretty much directed how we live in a COVID-19 world. We stopped on red, paused on yellow, and then moved slowly on green toward a hopeful return to normalcy. It has not been easy. Throughout its 57-year history, Calvary Homes—one of the Lancaster area’s most respected and highly-rated non-profit retirement communities—has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to providing faith-based fellowship and care to all residents, especially during the trying times of COVID-19. From the start of the pandemic, Calvary Homes has been proactive in following strict infection control measures and implementing government and CDC recommendations designed to protect all members of the Calvary community, residents and employees alike. Efforts have been successful as residents continue to live safely, have their physical requirements met, and their spiritual needs satisfied. Also, construction on Calvary’s re-designed skilled nursing center was completed only months before the virus struck. The new area is divided into two distinct neighborhoods, each with mostly private rooms and baths, separate areas for dining and activities, and access to attractive outdoor spaces. The new center provides privacy and enhanced care for Calvary’s most vulnerable residents. Calvary Homes offers residential living, personal care, and skilled nursing with rehab services in a beautiful and convenient neighborhood setting. Please call or visit Calvary’s website for more information.

HOMESTEAD VILLAGE
THRIVE WHERE YOU ARE Many of the non-profit Life Plan communities in Lancaster County offer a continuum of care services to meet the varying needs of their residents. From maintenance to dining, wellness services and more, there are many ways that communities serve their residents. But although services and amenities help us quantify the value of a retirement community–people most often choose a community based on the way they feel about it. This is often how they imagine how they will fit in with, and relate to, the other residents that live there. Why? A largely under-emphasized reason why people choose to move to a life plan community is because of the social aspect that it offers. It’s been proven that having friends, loved-ones, and companions that care about you increases overall satisfaction in life, and even increases longevity! A life plan community offers an almost-instantaneous group of friends and neighbors who are “in the same boat” as you, and who become your new family to learn, grow, travel, and enjoy life with. If you’ve already made the decision to move to a life plan community–congratulations! Your new adventure awaits you! If you’re still on the fence, try to explore what hesitations are holding you back. At Homestead Village, your elegant, maintenance-free home is only the beginning. You'll become part of the Homestead Village community, with its wealth of services, amenities, and life enrichment programs. You're also minutes from outstanding medical care, major highways, and the cultural attractions of Lancaster. Once you make the move, you’ll be glad you did! Your new friends are waiting for you!
