Holiday Hosting Returns As we start to see holiday gatherings return this season, I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels like her hosting skills are a little rusty. The platters and serving bowls are tucked far away in the back of cabinets, and the nicer wine glasses are a little dusty. The athleisure side of my wardrobe has grown infinitely, and my go-to hairstyle these days is a 30-second messy bun. When planning our December issue, we knew this scenario probably described a lot of our readers—so enter our 2021 Guide to Holiday Hosting. From surprisingly simple appetizers to table decor inspo to 5-minute hostess hair updos (because let’s admit, we will all still probably be running late), this guide is meant to help us all

brush up on our skills and make things go as smoothly as possible. Check out the guide on page 18. For those hosts looking to skip the appetizer cooking, consider Lancaster’s hottest new trend, Graze. Go behind-the-scenes with Graze on page 16. Prefer to take a day trip for some festive fun? Turn to page 8 for this month’s Talk of the Town which takes you on a trip to Bethlehem, PA. Find even more ideas for the holidays on page 32 with our Holiday Fun Spotlights. Your 3-Step Holiday Stress-Reducing Game plan BY HOLLY MANN

With the holiday season approaching, exciting plans, family traditions, and an abundance of activities are around the corner. While many of us have the best intentions of staying calm, present, and joyful throughout the holidays, that doesn’t always end up being the case. As schedules begin to fill up, you may feel that the time needed to care for yourself, healthy habits, and enjoyment in the things you actually want to do all get a bit lost. But that doesn’t have to be the case. With a little planning and acknowledgment of your desires, the holidays can be both exciting and relaxing.

We’re sharing 3 common stressors during the holiday season and a few suggestions on ways you can combat each one to make the most of your last few months of the year.

HOSTING

2. Keep the menu simple! The food can be delicious

Being the host or hostess with the mostest is a great honor—but doesn’t come without its own stressors. It can be easy to feel like there is always more to do, you’re missing out on the fun, and expectations are unattainable. How can you make hosting less stressful?

1. Plan ahead by creating a task list, menu, shopping

list, needed decorations, and more. Actually write out your to-do list and follow through by adding it to your schedule.

AND easy by using make ahead recipes to help spread out the work.

3. Share the load by asking guests to bring side

dishes, drinks, and other easy items. People want to contribute!

4. Lower your expectations to recognize perfection

is not realistic. However, you can still host a fabulous celebration with the unexpected hiccups of the day. Intentionally set your mood and have fun!

SHOPPING

3. Fit shopping into your schedule, not the other

During the holiday season, it can be so easy to feel overwhelmed by shopping, gift giving, and a feeling of never having enough time to do it all. How can you make shopping fun without breaking the bank or feeling guilt?

4. Gather any gift wrapping supplies from last

1.

reate a list of people you want to get gifts for, C create a budget, and stick to it! I suggest you get the list out of your head and onto paper.

2. Get started gift shopping early to ensure you get

what you want and aren’t rushing last minute. Last minute anything is stressful. Try to be proactive this year!

12

SUSQUEHANNA SUSQUEHANNA STYLE STYLE || DECEMBER DECEMBER 2021 2021

way around. Pop into your favorite restaurants and stores to get gift certificates when you’re already out, and try shopping during the week when it’s less busy. year that you can reuse again. I always find last year’s tissue paper, gift bags and ribbons AFTER I purchase more.

5. Consider experiences as gifts that allow you to

spend time with those you care about. These can be scheduled in the upcoming new year when the holiday schedule isn’t so full.

FAMILY PLANS & TRADITIONS…AND FITTING IT ALL IN! During the holidays, your list of to-dos, traditions, and activities can get lengthy. Fitting it all in is quite the task to accomplish! How can you ensure you actually get the time to enjoy the things you want to?

1. Write down the necessary “must do” obligations

including your children’s concerts, school events, and work parties.

2. Schedule time for the traditions you truly want

to enjoy such as getting your tree, putting up holiday decorations, watching your favorite Christmas movies, and baking cookies. These things take time so reserve large chunks or your day or weekend so you can fully embrace the time together.

3. Create the space for visits with loved ones and

travel. Meaningful time spent together can easily get pushed aside in the busyness of this time of year.

4. Allow space in your calendar to simply BE and

enjoy the season-sitting by the fire, sipping hot cocoa, listening to Christmas music, and actually enjoying your beautifully decorated home!

SOME OTHER HELPFUL REMINDERS FOR YOURSELF INCLUDE: 1. Stay hydrated. It’s easy to skip on the water and replace it with extra sweet drinks and alcohol.

2. Prioritize adequate sleep even when the schedule may be filled to the brim.

3. Say no when you need to. (Pro Tip: Try saying,

“Thank you for the invitation but that won’t work for us right now.”)

4. Get fresh air, and move your body often. Never

5. Treat treats as treats, and try not to overindulge for the entire 12 weeks.

6. Ask for the help and support you need and deserve. Work as a team.

Throughout the season, don’t forget to also prioritize yourself. As the mother AND house manager of my home, I understand how it can feel like everything falls on your shoulders. But the reality is, there is help around you if you simply ask. Happy holidays!

underestimate the power of a brisk walk!

EAT & DRINK

What’s better than walking into a wedding just to be met by a table overflowing with meticulously organized curated salamis, artisan cheeses, crackers, honey, fruits, berries, and more locally sourced delicacies? Or to be greeted by a perfectly Instagrammable, numbershaped charcuterie board filled with hand-selected charcuterie ingredients at a birthday party. Delicious, aesthetically pleasing, and the perfect centerpiece for any event…we’ll take ten!

Say Cheese With Graze Lancaster BY LINDSAY GARBACIK PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARLO GESNER

What started as a hobby and eventual party staple at Graze owner Samantha Lewis’ house has transformed amidst the pandemic into a successful (and tasty) Lancaster business. Graze is an artisanal charcuterie shop that specializes in creating impressive, personalized charcuterie boards, grazing tables, and curating a fine combination of meats, cheeses and fruits, among other foods, for each arrangement. Lewis has been creating curated boards for almost three years, and recently launched her business online. In September, Lewis quietly opened her storefront. She plans to use the space as a place to meet with couples about their weddings and host charcuterie crafting courses. “I went from taking a couple orders a week in my home basement to being booked weeks out and now having my own store front,” said Lewis. Lewis utilizes social media to promote her business and to foster relationships with other local businesses. “Instagram is so great for this! I would reach out to other small businesses and offer them a sampling of what I do. In exchange,

16

we would share each other’s businesses on social media and eventually start working together! I love to support other local small businesses,” said Lewis. Scrolling through Graze’s Instagram, their local business partnerships are abundant and apparent. Fresh flowers from Olivia’s Flower Truck and recently harvested figs from Off The Beaten Path Nursery are just a few of the local shops that Graze has relationships with. Lewis loves to change the foods she uses seasonally, so the ability to experiment with new foods and flowers for her displays are one of the joys of her job. Social media was also critical for Graze thriving throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Customers were able to order from Graze online, and Lewis offered boards that could be picked up contactlessly from her porch. “People really missed going out on dates, so I created the Date Night Board, and that was my most popular during COVID! I was very fortunate that COVID did not affect my business,” said Lewis. A Date Night Board is a mini charcuterie board for two, which features chocolate dipped strawberries, meats, and cheeses, and can even be customized. For smaller servings, she offers the Adult Lunchable, which is just like the classic lunch staple but is instead filled with artisan cheeses, meats, crackers, honey, chocolate, and fruit. Another favorite—the well-loved charcuterie numbers and letters—measure eight or 16 inches, so they can be completely customized depending on size of the crowd. Boards are offered in all shapes and sizes and for a variety of events. When choosing what to use in the boards, Lewis has a system. “I try to give a good variety so there is something for everyone! I make sure to use a soft cheese, semi soft [cheese], and a hard [cheese]. I put so much stuff on my boards so you can basically sample things in so many different ways and find what you like!” Lewis listens closely to client feedback and is sure to use ingredients that people love again in future boards. Charcuterie boards are delicious, trendy, and offer something for everyone! Check out Graze in Lancaster today!

2 21 GUIDE

to Holiday Hosting PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARLO GESNER

As holiday hosting returns, a lot of us are probably a little rusty in our skills. From table decor to recipes

and perfecting your host look, we’ve got some tips and tricks to help your day run smoothly.

LUXE

Lodge

DESIGNER: Rebecca Addington, Owner/Designer, Ville & Rue

The holidays are right around the corner! While you may have started planning your menu for the big day, don’t forget to think about your table setting! We love working with a luxe lodge theme because it is the perfect blend of comfort, sophistication, and nostalgia. We enjoy using metallics all year round, but they especially pop during the winter months. Metallics help warm up a space and add a touch of polish to the table. We recommend doing this with votive holders, serving pieces, or vases. Adding natural elements to your table brings in an organic feel. These pieces provide an air of casualness, which balances out the sophistication of metallics. Think about adding some wood elements to your setting, like our tapas plates, and if you’re feeling adventurous, our cowhide coasters are another great touch. We always encourage adding greenery, no matter what the time of year it is. In the winter, evergreen, pinecones, and berries help bring the outdoors in and add a color contrast to an otherwise neutral palette. Finally, we love to add something whimsical or unconventional, such as our Majestic Stag plates. These pieces are often conversation starters, and are a perfect finishing touch that your guests will not forget.

DESIGNER: Sarah Inch, Owner/Designer, Gray Apple Design & Market At Gray Apple, we love keeping things neutral while adding touches of seasonal hues to accentuate our holiday decor. Celebrate the season by complimenting earthy tones and textures with brighter holiday greens. Add some rich hues to your centerpiece to keep your tablescape festive while toning it down with seagrass covered glassware and ivory dishes. Add a pop of holiday color with your textiles, such as napkins. A weathered vintage vessel creates an element of warmth with the contrasting brass flatware. Pour some holiday spirit, and enjoy!

5-MINUTE

Host Hairstyles

Oftentimes as the host on the big day, everything comes down to the wire which means a dash to get ready in time. Unfortunately, getting yourself dressed and ready usually gets bumped to the bottom of the list. Don’t let a lack of time stress you out. The experts at Revolve Atelier are here with a few easy 5-minute hairstyles that will leave you looking flawless.

DOUBLE T WIST PONY

1. Starting on the left side, separate a 1 inch section of hair from the frame of your face and twist clockwise. 2. Following two full clockwise twists, add a 1 inch section of hair from the point closest to your face, and twist into the current section clockwise. 3. Repeat step 2 until the left half of your hair is all part of the twist, and secure the pony at the nape of your neck with a rubber hair tie. 4. Repeat steps 1-3 on the right side, only this time you will be twisting counterclockwise. 5. Once at the end of twisting on the right side, secure the right side into a pony with the left side using a rubber hair tie. 6. Section off a 1 inch section of hair from the bottom side of the pony and wrap around the base of the pony to hide the hair tie. 7. Wrap until you are left with about 1 inch of hair and use a bobby pin to secure the end of the wrapped section of hair underneath the base of the pony. You may need an additional bobby to feel secure. 8. Once secure, add your favorite hair decor such as these diamond pins.

DECEMBER 2021 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE

25

BRAIDED BUN

1. Pull hair over the left shoulder into a ponytail in your hand. 2. Separate a 1 inch section from the left side and right side of the pony. 3. Take the 1 inch section from the left side, and cross it over the pony, leaving the right side 1 inch section out from the wrap. 4. Repeat with the right side, crossing over the pony and leaving out another 1 inch section from the left. 5. Continue the pattern of braiding until you reach the bottom of your hair, and secure it with a rubber hair tie. 6. Use some decorated bobby pins to secure any flyaways on your right side of your head. 7. Next, wrap the braid into a bun motion, securing with bobby pins as needed. 8. Once secure, adorn the bun with your favorite hair bling.

SLEEK HIGH PONY

1. Brush hair straight back over the crown of your head to help smooth out hair. 2. Using the top of your ears as a placement guidance, pull the top half of your hair into a pony with your hands. 3. Use a brush to help smooth out any bumps and pull the pony right above the crown of your head. Secure pony with rubber hair tie. 4. Once the top pony is secure, gather the remainder of your hair into a second pony to be placed directly under the first pony. 5. Using a brush to smooth out any bumps, secure the second pony with a rubber hair tie directly below the first pony. 6. Separate a 1 inch section of hair from the bottom pony, and wrap the hair around both ponies to hide the hair ties. 7. Wrap until you are left with about 1 inch of hair and use a bobby pin to secure the end of the wrapped section of hair underneath the base of the pony. You may need an additional bobby to feel secure. 8. Rock that high pony!

SUPRISINGLY

Simple Apps

RECIPES BY SUSAN BOWSER

Full disclosure: I LOVE the holidays. I love cheesy Hallmark movies and the way my kids’ voices get higher as the holiday season approaches. I love trimming my tree and decorating my house. And yes, I even love our elf on the shelf (I warned you—I’m super festive). But what I love the most is gathering with friends and family. Know what I don’t love? Being stuck in the kitchen for hours ahead of—or even worse—during a party. Luckily, I have a few tricks—AKA easy appetizers —up my sleeve. These festive apps are surprisingly simple to make, BUT sound/look like you put a lot of effort into them. Happy Holidays!

BRIE EN CROUTE

Don’t be fooled by this fancy-sounding appetizer. It’s beyond easy to make and always a crowd pleaser. The hardest part? Waiting to dig into this delicious hors d'oeuvre. INGREDIENTS: ¼ cup fig jam, plus extra for optional garnish (You could also use raspberry or strawberry jam if you prefer.) 1 8 oz wheel of brie 1 sheet frozen puff pastry dough, defrosted 1 egg beaten + 1 Tbsp water (egg wash) Crackers or sliced bread (For Serving) Optional fresh rosemary to garnish DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400. 2. Roll out puff pastry sheet into a square. You want it to be about double the size of your Brie. (Pro tip: sprinkle a little flour on top of your pasty sheet so the rolling pin doesn’t stick.) 3. Place Brie in center of pastry sheet. 4. Spread fig jam over top of Brie. 5. Fold four corners and sides of the pastry sheet around the Brie, pressing the dough together to create seams, until the brie is completely wrapped. 6. Brush with egg wash. 7. Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes until the crust is golden and Brie is melty. 8. Let sit for at least 45 minutes before serving (or else the cheese will all ooze out). 9. Garnish with a dollop of jam and rosemary if desired, and serve with crackers or a sliced baguette. DECEMBER 2021 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE

MINI HERBED CHEESE BALLS

There’s just something I love about a cheese ball. They’re fun and festive and delightfully retro. And you guessed it? Easy as can be! These are topped with fresh herbs, but the possibilities are endless. Chopped nuts or everything-but-the-bagel seasoning are delicious too! Up the glam factor with some extra festive toothpicks! INGREDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

8 oz cream cheese, room temperature

1. Mix together cream cheese and cheddar cheese until well combined.

8 oz shredded white sharp cheddar cheese ¼ cup finely chopped fresh parsley ¼ cup finely chopped fresh dill Crackers for serving Optional cherry tomatoes for garnish Toothpicks

28

SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | DECEMBER 2021

2. Take 1 tbsp of cheese mixture and form into a ball. (You should get about 20 balls.) 3. Chill balls for 30 minutes. 4. Combine fresh herbs. 5. Roll each ball in fresh herb mixture until well coated. 6. Put a toothpick into each ball, and place on a platter. Serve with crackers.

PROSCIUT TO WRAPPED BLUE CHEESE-STUFFED DATES These have been a go-to appetizer of mine for years and are always a hit at parties. This recipe calls for blue cheese, but feel free to substitute goat cheese if you prefer. INGREDIENTS: 24 Pitted dates 4 oz blue cheese crumbles 3 oz (6 slices) prosciutto, each sliced into 4 pieces DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 375. 2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Slice the center of each date vertically, without cutting entirely through the date, to create a small pocket. 4. Stuff date pockets with a pinch of blue cheese. 5. Wrap each date with one slice of prosciutto. 6. Bake until cheese is melted and prosciutto is crispy, about 7 or 8 minutes.
