PUBLISHER'S LETTER

PHOTO COURTESY OF VAL RIEHL, LAUREN FISHER PHOTOGRAPHY

Your 2022 Reset If you had asked me in September 2020, after getting engaged, if we’d still be dealing with COVID in October of 2021, I would have optimistically smiled and said no. But for any couples who have also tied the knot in 2021, you know all too well the added stress of planning a wedding in the middle of a pandemic. The stress of finding vendors when they are booked out for 18 months, the “will they/won’t they” of event size restrictions, and the worry of how to protect your guests and create a comfortable environment. As someone who got married less than a month ago as I sit and write this letter, I can attest that I feel your stress, but it CAN be done! We are lucky enough to live in a region with some of the best wedding vendors around, and they are eager to help you navigate these times. I know I could not have planned a wedding without the amazing vendors who helped make our big day special. Whether you’re looking for vendors or simply inspiration, turn to page 33 for our annual wedding edition. Don’t forget to check out our online wedding directory for additional advice and vendor options.

We also know that the past year has a lot of you looking to reset—enter this month’s Live Well feature on the Wellness Wheel meant to help you get back to the basics when it comes to balancing all areas of wellness in your life. Turn to page 26 to start planning your 2022 reset. In addition to weddings and wellness, our Jan/Feb issue also means all of the newest content on beauty. We received such love from readers for our 2021 Local Beauty Buys piece that we decided to bring it back for 2022. Check out some of our favorite beauty products from local Susquehanna Valley businesses on page 10. Looking to customize your beauty look? Turn to page 12 for a behind-the-scenes with Hanover’s Collado Cosmetics. Whatever 2022 has in store for you, we hope this issue helps kickstart your best year yet!

FIRST STEPS Behind the counter, Collado has all the ingredients for lipstick at her fingertips. “There are three different bases,” she explains, that create “a tinted balm like Chapstick with Vitamin E, a traditional lipstick with a cream base, and a matte formula with full color and no shine.” She leads each client through a series of questions, first honing in on color. Like an artist at work, she places dots of color on the palette—pinks, browns, and yellows in my case—then offers additives such as SPF, moisturizing Vitamin E, a touch of shimmer, a whiff of mint fragrance for a little tingle on the lips. Yes, yes, yes, and yes! Then she blends, like a pastry chef whipping up the finest buttercream frosting. The first sample color, we both agreed, was a little lighter than the deep red wine we were aiming for. She remedied it with a touch of brown. Another sample on the lips. The third time was the charm—one more drop of yellow resulted in my ideal customized color. Next, the lipstick needed to take shape. Collado deftly combined the color pigments with beeswax and other ingredients, pressing them into a silver metal lipstick-shaped mold. Within minutes, presto! My custom lipstick popped out of the mold, into a shiny black lipstick case—“Collado” emblazoned in gold. She promises cosmetics that are customized, but I was also mesmerized. Truth be told, she was too. “It never gets old,” she says, describing the thrill of opening the mold, seeing that final product, experiencing gasps from her clients. And that’s just for starters. She also creates customized foundations, concealers, highlighters, and bronzers. For the eyes, there are lash lifts and tints—experienced in big cozy chaise lounges. Currently, she’s offering a customized lipstick and lip gloss experience for $75. She keeps clients’ formulas on file, and all reorders are discounted.

Growing up nearby, she “loved history.” She even went on archaeological digs along the Susquehanna River and completed internships at Harrisburg’s State Museum of Pennsylvania. “I was pretty much Indiana Jones,” she says. So what happened? Her first semester of college went fine, then in her second semester, one of her archaeology professors burst her bubble by describing typical working conditions. “She spent four or five months on a dig, and got to shower with running water four or five times. And I said, ‘That’s a big hell no, for me,’” Collado says. Makeup became her backup. She had just taken a part-time job at Hanover’s brand new Ulta Beauty shop, where she admits she started with zero experience. “I grew up playing outside in the dirt with two brothers, doing nothing related to makeup. But once I started learning, I fell in love with it,” Collado says. A trip to New York inspired her to create Collado Cosmetic Lab. “It was a birthday experience where I got to make my own makeup—products that no one else had,” Collado says. Inspired, “I thought, ‘I should bring this to Hanover.’”

MAKEUP, UP, UP, AND AWAY The former archeologist in her provided Collado with the research skills she needed to locate labs where she could source cosmetic ingredients. Half Puerto Rican, Collado understands the importance of customized products because “every single person is unique, from skin tone to undertone and skin type,” Collado says. Clients hail from all over the Susquehanna Valley, nearby Baltimore, as well as far-flung places like Montana, Florida, Maine, even India.

“I love everything makeup,” Collado says. “Three years ago, I decided to open up my own business, and I’m still flabbergasted it worked in little Hanover, PA.”

“The amount of people who come in my door from all over—I have a hard time wrapping my brain around that—and I’m truly grateful,” Collado says. “I feel like I’ve just started—I blinked, and three years have gone by.”

CAREER ABOUT-FACE

COLLADO COSMETIC LAB

“It’s truly by accident” that Collado discovered her career path. “I actually went to college to become an archaeologist,” she says.

Gregory A. Tocks, D.O. Joint Surgeon and Physician Director, Outpatient Joint Program

EXPERIENCED CARE WITH PROVEN RESULTS Patients experience their joint replacement surgery at an outpatient ambulatory surgery center for the first time in Lebanon, Lancaster, and Dauphin Counties. Since April of 2021, physicians at Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL), have been performing same day discharge joint replacement procedures at the North Pointe Surgery Center Lebanon (NPSC). Patients who meet preprocedural requirements have their joint surgery in the morning and discharged home safely around lunchtime. One of the faces behind this amazing new advancement for OAL: Gregory A. Tocks, D.O., Physician Director for the Outpatient Joint Committee at NPSC Lebanon. This position has allowed me to work side-by-side with physicians, nurses, administrators, and staff developing and maintaining this high-quality patient experience.

As a joint replacement fellowship trained surgeon at OAL, I personally perform outpatient shoulder, hip, and knee replacement procedures. The Outpatient Joint Program at NPSC Lebanon offers a more proficient, safe, and cost-efficient surgery than one may experience in the hospital setting. Based on our outpatient joint patient outcomes, this program has ample opportunity to positively impact the local community in the future. As an orthopedic surgeon, I love hearing how our team has changed a person’s life. When a patient tells you they are now able to get on the floor with their grandchildren, able to play a “better” round of golf, return to work, and get a healthy night of sleep, that’s what I appreciate.

SUSQUEHANNA SUSQUEHANNA STYLE STYLE || JANUARY/FEBRUARY JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022 2022

Deryl Stoltzfus was reviewing the whoopie pies behind the case at Hershey Farm Café and Bakery. “So today, we have the chocolate peanut butter,” he said. “We have the confetti with strawberry. Chocolate strawberry. We have chocolate original. We have the shoofly whoopie pie, which is unbelievable.” There in Tanger Outlets Lancaster, Hershey Farm Café and Bakery feeds the soul crying for comfort food, with a stacked panini, hearty soup, refreshing smoothie, or rich cup of coffee. But first, you have to get past the whoopie pies. They beckon from the window, inviting you to step into the farmhousecharming atmosphere, put down your shopping bags, and savor a meal made just for you. You might know Hershey Farm from its 23-acre getaway, with hotel and buffet, neighboring Lancaster’s Sight & Sound Theatre. Or maybe you’ve custom-designed your own treat at Hershey Farm’s Makin’ Whoopie Pies at Hersheypark. Now, Hershey Farm Café & Bakery brings a slightly sassier member into the family. Since opening in May 2021, Hershey Farm Café & Bakery has introduced Tanger Outlets shoppers to a local experience in food, with a menu that adds signature twists to familiar classics. The café emerged when Tanger officials approached Hershey Farm ownership about enhancing the local feel of their outlets. Stoltzfus and his partners had to think for a moment.

Stoltzfus and the Hershey Farm team, including his wife, Hollee Stoltzfus, designed the varied menu of salads, soups, pizzas, and paninis that jazzes up comfort with the unexpected. The pizza is served on freshbaked flatbread. The Hawaiian panini of applewood ham, smoked cheddar and Swiss cheeses, pineapple, and BBQ sauce delivers sweet and savory. The Presto Pesto with roasted red peppers, spinach, mozzarella, and smoked provolone, all on a fragrant rosemary basil bread, wins raves. All of the seven paninis can be made with the suggested bread or your choice of hearty white, garlic oregano, rosemary basil, or pepperoni bread. With your meal, sip a smoothie, freshbrewed tea, gourmet hot chocolate, or chocolate chiller. Choose a classic lemonade or green tea base for your wonderfully light refresher–under 100 calories!–in exotic flavors like wildberry hibiscus or the summery watermelon cucumber mint. Hollee had the idea that turned the Sweet Apple Gobbler panini from a standard sandwich into a moonshot. Today, it is Stoltzfus’ favorite. “I remember Hollee saying, ‘What if we put sliced apples on it?’” he recalls. “I was like, ‘Okay, I’m willing to try it. Sounds a little weird.’ Oh, my goodness. It was fantastic. That combination of apple slice and apple butter with the smoked turkey and the smoked cheeses is amazing.” And of course, there are the baked goods, also fresh daily from Hershey Farm. Whoopie pies in singles or six packs. Brownies. Muffins. Whole pies.

“We’re always open to opportunity, but this is literally coming out of the pandemic, which is really rough on restaurants,” Stoltzfus said on a bright Friday morning as the lunch crowd started appearing. “We talked about it and decided that the pandemic is going to go past. It’s a great opportunity for us to do something new. We wanted to have comfort foods that were done just a little bit differently.” A commitment to local foods and top quality anchors the menu. Soups and breads arrive freshly made from Hershey Farm daily. Produce comes from a local auction. Lunch meats come from an Amish supplier in Ohio, the clear winner of many meats taste-tested. A local coffee master roasts the smooth cup of java. “Everything is made to order,” said Stoltzfus. “A panini, you’re going to have to wait five minutes, but it’s going to be fresh, and it’s going to be great.” JANUARY/FEBRUARY JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE

21

“And we don’t even have our cinnamon buns here today,” Stoltzfus confessed—the ones designed to out-cinnamon bun Cinnabon. “Those are phenomenal, as well.” Stoltzfus credits his staff for giving each diner’s order something extra special. “They really care what they serve,” he said. “We try and give each customer a personal experience. We want people to feel like we made this sandwich just for you.” The décor, designed by Hershey Farm’s inhouse contractor, John Martin, draws diners into a modern farmhouse. Menu boards hang like sliding barn doors. Tactile touches include a faux hedge framing the Instagram wall, with its neon sign declaring “Farm To Table.” As for the restrooms, you just have to see the Instagram-ready sayings decorating the walls–“Sprinkles are for cupcakes,” and in the men’s room, “Players with short bats please stand close to the plate.” The décor also spotlights the food, placing the soup kettles, panini makers, and prep areas where diners can see them and witness the care that goes into their selections. Those open areas are one of the ideas that Stoltzfus, a Lancaster native, brings home from his travels. They help give Hershey Farm Café & Bakery a feel of contemporary nowness rooted in down-home tradition. Order an ice cream cone, and you’re getting a taste from the same Amish dairy where Stoltzfus, as a kid, would ride his bike for a frozen treat. The response to the café, he says, has been “humbling,” from the “super-supportive” Tanger Outlets to the customers who stop their cars just to pop back in and say, “Just so you know, this is the best sandwich I’ve ever had.” “There’s something intangible about Lancaster County,” said Stoltzfus. “There is a feeling when people come to Lancaster County, and they just go, ‘Ahhh. I feel safe. I feel relaxed.’ We try to capture that at Hershey Farm and Hershey Farm Café & Bakery.” Hershey Farm Café & Bakery: Tanger Outlets

This chicken parmesan recipe uses grilled chicken instead of breaded chicken resulting in a lightened up and easier version of the classic. If you’re trying to avoid carbs-or just want to eat some more veggies-try serving this over spinach instead of pasta. Brave the cold and use your grill *or* a grill pan works well too! 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, sliced in half (so you have 4 thin pieces of chicken) 2 tsp. Olive oil Storebought Marinara or Tomato sauce Salt Pepper Garlic Powder Fr esh Mozzarella (an 8 oz ball or pre-sliced log works well) Parmesan and fresh basil to garnish (optional)

Healthy Shake-Up RECIPES BY SUSAN BOWSER PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARLO GESNER

Happy New Year! Whether you’re looking to cut back on carbs (grilled chicken parm), eat more veggies (green bean and beef stir fry), or are embarking on a round of Whole 30 (chicken and sweet potato chili), I’ve got you covered with these easy and delicious recipes. They’re also great if you’ve made a resolution to cook more or (gasp) no resolutions at all. Enjoy!

1. Preheat grill to 400 or a grill pan over medium high heat. 2. Brush each piece of chicken with olive oil (about .5 tsp each) and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. 3. Grill chicken until it is mostly done (about 3 to 4 minutes per side). 4. Top each piece of chicken with ~¼ marinara sauce and a slice of fresh mozzarella. 5. Close grill (or cover pan) and cook until cheese is melted (and chicken is cooked to 165 degrees). 6. Garnish with grated parmesan and basil if desired.

DISH IT UP

Grilled Chicken Parmesan

EAT & DRINK

Chicken and Sweet Potato Chili It’s the most wonderful time of the year for healthy, hearty, comfort food. And this dish fits the bill! It’s also #Whole30. You could make this on the stove top, but my directions here are going to be for the slow cooker…just throw all the ingredients in, and let it simmer. You’ll thank yourself (and me) later when you have a delicious dinner just waiting for you! 2 cups chopped boneless skinless chicken breast (about 2 breasts) 2 cups chicken bone broth 1 14.5 oz. can fire roasted tomatoes (Look for a can without yeast extract if you’re doing a Whole 30.)

24

SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

3 small or 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped 2 large carrots, peeled and chopped 1 tbsp. chili powder 1 small yellow onion, diced Salt & pepper to taste (This varies a lot based on preference/the amount of salt in your bone broth. My bone broth was already seasoned so I didn’t need to add any.) Sliced Avocado & Cilantro (optional for garnish) 1. Add all ingredients except for optional garnishes into crock pot. 2. Stir and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4. 3. Garnish with avocado and cilantro if desired. 4. Enjoy!

Beef and Green Bean Stir Fry This simple stir fry is perfect for busy weeknights (and it’s Whole 30 if you’re into that kind of thing). Serve it up over your favorite rice, and enjoy! 2 tsp. avocado oil 1 tsp. minced garlic 1/2 tsp. ginger powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. sesame oil 2 tbsp. coconut aminos 1 pound ground beef 2 cups green beans, trimmed and cut into ~1.5” pieces Cilantro for garnish (optional)

1. Add avocado oil to large skillet. 2. Cook minced garlic for 2 to 3 minutes until soft and fragrant, stirring frequently. 3. Add ground beef, salt, and ginger powder to skillet, breaking up the meat as it browns. 4. Drain ground beef after it is browned and cooked through (~10 minutes on medium heat). 5. Add green beans to skillet. 6. Cook green beans for 1 to 2 minutes. 7. Add coconut aminos and sesame oil, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes longer, until green beans are just slightly tender. 8. Serve over cauliflower rice or rice, and enjoy!

YOUR 2022 RESET EMBRACING THE WELLNESS WHEEL WRITER RACHEL CURRY

IT'S TIME TO PRESS THE RESET BUTTON.

What if you didn't pigeonhole yourself into a rigid New Year's goal? What if, this year, you did things differently? Enter: The wellness wheel.

26

SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

THE WELLNESS WHEEL: WHAT IT MEANS AND HOW YOU CAN USE IT TO PRESS 'RESET'. Every part of your wellness is interconnected, but the whole picture can be harder to approach than its individual parts. The wellness wheel is an eight-part modality that's been defined by Princeton University and other noteworthy institutions to describe the different dimensions of wellness. The wellness wheel takes into consideration the following dimensions: emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual. We'll dig into each one—but at its core, the wellness wheel acts as a framework for a total reset. You can use it to build an action plan addressing the different aspects of your life. Unlike a one-sided goal, approaching wellness through the wellness wheel allows you to reset your life and build real momentum for sustained wellbeing.

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS: DEALING WITH LIFE'S UPS AND DOWNS IN A HEALTHY, CONSTRUCTIVE WAY. Why it's important: Amy Reed, owner of Lancaster's Alternative Healing of PA, says it best: "People are overwhelmed. That's why they seek out treatment." According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 51.5 million Americans (or 20.6%) lived with a mental illness in 2019. Using healthy mechanisms to cope with life's fluctuations keeps out destructive habits like substance use, media overconsumption, and more. How to incorporate it: Platforms like Psychology Today and ZocDoc can help you find a licensed therapist or counselor. If you want to explore medication, know that 15.8% of your fellow Americans have also used medication to treat their mental health. Natural alternatives like yoga, meditation, and CBD have become increasingly popular in western communities.

ENVIRONMENTAL WELLNESS: A THRIVING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR NATURAL AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS. Why it's important: According to Keith Williams, Community Engagement Coordinator for Lancaster Conservancy, being out in nature without an agenda is healing. He says, "We share DNA with all living things, and that DNA is often more similar than it is different." How to incorporate it: Lancaster Conservancy's 40 miles of trail and 49 nature preserves help people enjoy the outdoors—and that's just the start of places to explore in south central PA. Therapy patients can take advantage of a rising form of therapy called ecotherapy, which takes patients directly out in nature. Keith adds it's important to consider the health of our planet and our role in it. "As we look at the challenge of climate change facing our planet, the more compassion we can develop for the whole living world, the better off we'll all be." FINANCIAL WELLNESS: FAMILIARIZING YOURSELF WITH YOUR FINANCES AND MANAGING YOUR MONEY FOR THE SHORT- AND LONG-TERM. Why it's important: Brady says, "Money is a tool, not the ultimate goal. Generally, we use our tools to build something else." According to the 2021 PwC Employee Financial Wellness survey, 63% of employees are experiencing increased financial stress since the start of the pandemic. Much of this is out of our control, like rapid inflation and a plethora of low-wage jobs without benefits. However, embarking on financial wellness can help create control when everything feels unpredictable.

OCCUPATIONAL WELLNESS: FEELING FULFILLED IN YOUR WORK AND CONTINUING TO GROW. Why it's important: Thrivient financial advisor Conner Brady of Harrisburg says, "Seeking money just for the sake of money can be pretty destructive." He notes that it's important to find a job that allows you to pursue your goals and passions—whether it's through the job directly or through benefits that make your out-of-work ventures possible. How to incorporate it: "People are realizing that they don't necessarily have to have the same idea of work as they had in the past," says Conner. "And people are ready to explore what that looks like." Define your life goals, and figure out if your current career helps you achieve them. When asking for a raise, be prepared to quantify your contributions to the company. If your LinkedIn and resume are dusty, refresh them—because you never know when opportunity will strike."

INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS: PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND CREATIVITY. BEING OPEN-MINDED. Why it's important: An often forgotten sector of health, intellectual wellness helps people tap into new viewpoints and improve critical thinking skills. It's important to get out of your comfort zone and enter your growth zone. How to incorporate it: Find activities that are artistic, inspiring, and thoughtproving. How can you spend your time in ways that promote personal growth? Audiobooks make reading easier than ever before (and podcasts are a solid alternative). Platforms like Coursera offer free courses from Ivy League universities. Now's the chance to dive into new disciplines, from music to the stock market and beyond.

28

SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

How to incorporate it: Conner talks about financial clarity, which just means boiling down your goals and finding out how your finances can help you achieve them. He says all financial plans need a budget, but "instead of looking at a budget that's limiting you from spending, think about it as something that'll help you achieve your purposes in life." Get specific with your goals (like achieving an early retirement, paying for your children's college tuition, or becoming free of student debt) and sit down with a financial advisor to figure out the best plan of action. Conner says, "When you find the right advisor for you, you can live with more purpose and more clarity in your finances than if you're going it alone."

PHYSICAL WELLNESS: ENRICHING YOURSELF WITH HEALTHY ACTIVITY AND NUTRITION. Why it's important: Our physical health is more than what we eat and how we move. It's built from our social and economic environments, plus our personal characteristics. All of this plays into physical wellness, which just so happens to impact other areas of our life—like emotional and spiritual wellness, for instance. How to incorporate it: Reed's alternative healing practice highly recommends chiropractic care for its patients. While her facility doesn't offer it, the team recognizes that it keeps "our bodies in alignment and our muscles calm." Find a form of exercise that ignites you (like ultimate frisbee and rock climbing, both of which you can do at Manheim's Spooky Nook Sports). Eat whole, unprocessed foods that speak to your palate—without restricting yourself from your body's wants and needs.

SOCIAL WELLNESS: BUILDING A STRONG SUPPORT SYSTEM AND NOURISHING YOUR RELATIONSHIPS. Why it's important: During the COVID-19 pandemic, people experienced "social atrophy," or the loss of social skills when not used. For many, rebuilding those social muscles is hard. However, a strong support system can improve the quality of your life, even lowering the risk of diseases, dementia, depression, and anxiety. How to incorporate it: If you're struggling to build or nourish your social net, block out a bit of time every day for socialization (at the least, a text conversation, but preferably a phone call, video chat, or in-person hang). For the Susquehanna Valley transplants without firm circles, meet-ups and events are back—if not in full swing, at least enough to flex your social muscles.

SPIRITUAL WELLNESS: IDENTIFYING YOUR VALUES AND BELIEFS AND LIVING IN LINE WITH THEM. FINDING MEANING IN LIFE. Why it's important: For people who may be scared to try a new-to-them spiritual practice, Reed says, "The best thing you can do is just jump off and take the leap." More than anything, spiritual wellness helps you figure out who you are and what you plan to do with your one wild and precious life. How to incorporate it: According to Reed, some spiritual wellness services require an open mind. She performs energy work like Reiki and quantum touch magnified healing, which are becoming more popular. Other services, like spiritual coaching, help people find their purpose in life. For hesitant folks, group meditation classes (even virtual ones on platforms like MindBody) may be an easy entry point into spiritual wellness.

THE WELLNESS WHEEL FROM A BIRD'S EYE VIEW It's not too late to look deeper. Even if you've already set a New Year's goal for yourself, you can see how that vision fits into the greater wellness wheel. As Reed puts it, "Unless we treat everything as a whole, nothing will feel complete." JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE

WHY USE AN ATTORNEY WHEN YOU ARE BUYING A HOME? When you are buying a home you will need to get a title insurance policy on that property. A title insurance policy assures you that you are purchasing the property “free and clear” of any other interests. Title insurance applies to any property you own – a condominium, a townhouse or a single family home. The policy protects you against disputes with other parties that may claim an interest in your new property, for example a holder of a lien that could jeopardize your ownership or ability to use the property.

CGALAW.COM/PRACTICE-AREAS/REAL-ESTATE-LAW

In Pennsylvania, title insurance can be issued by a settlement company or by an attorney’s office. The cost of title insurance is set by law and does not vary regardless of where it is issued. But the advantage of having an attorney’s office issue title insurance is that a specialized real estate attorney has reviewed your title and addressed any legal implications of your purchase.

Buying your home is one of the largest investments of your lifetime. Having an advocate at your side is helpful if there are any unforeseen events. For example, if closing gets delayed or the house is damaged you will have an experienced attorney at your side to offer guidance and solutions. When you are purchasing a home, contact a CGA Real Estate attorney. We have 38 legal professionals ready to serve you. Having a CGA attorney by your side through the home buying process gives you the peace of mind that your interests are being protected.

by Lindsay Garbacik As the bride floats down the aisle, a gentle wind breezes through the ceremony, all eyes are drawn to her ensemble and the gentle romance of the chosen headpiece. From classic veils to jeweled headpieces, each accessory brings drama and makes a statement. We’ve asked the experts just how to choose a headpiece that suits the vibe of your wedding.

VEIL A veil can be a classic yet unexpected moment of drama in a wedding ensemble. While the classic veil sticks to tradition, it also creates a romantic moment between partners at the altar when it is time for the unveiling. “It brings a bit of traditional and classic vibes, it can also make it modern,” says Susquehanna Valley fashion designer Sheila Kauffman, founder of SHEILA FRANK bridal salon. The classic style works well with many themes, says Kauffman.

How to Get the Look :

• Pair a long, cathedral length veil with a short dress for a pop of 70s era drama. • Borrow lace from another wedding dress to create the veil. This can be a special but simple way to honor a mom or grandmother's wedding gown in your ensemble.

40

SUSQUEHANNA SUSQUEHANNA STYLE STYLE || JANUARY/FEBRUARY JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022 2022

BIRD CAGE For the vintage-loving bride, try a bird cage headpiece. Gone are the simple headpieces with just a layer of netting shielding the bride’s face. Bird cages come in all shapes and sizes, with varying levels of drama. Think "royal wedding". It could be as simple as a tulle face veil or a demure bird cage clip-in, while others evoke grandeur and seduction with cocktail hats attached to voluminous, all-encompassing nettings. “I flash back to the 1950s when I see a bird cage,” says Kauffman, so she often references style icons like Audrey Hepburn when designing for this style.

How to Get the Look :

• Reference classic style icons like Audrey Hepburn, and Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette, for bird cage inspiration. • Switch it up from the classic bird cage netting, and add your own flair by using any semi-sheer fabric as a chic eye covering.

JEWELED HEADPIECE Can’t get enough bling? Pile more on top! Jeweled headpieces are a dramatic yet classy way to incorporate more sparkle into your look. If you like to wear a lot of jewelry, wear a jeweled headpiece that goes with the metal of your jewelry for a cohesive and blinged out ensemble. "Jeweled headpieces are very regal to me. Almost royallike," says Kauffman. There has been a surge in crowns in recent years, likely because of the popularity of “Game of Thrones,” says Kauffman.

How to Get the Look :

• Look for knotted headbands with jewels as a modern headpiece option. • Dainty jeweled headbands that tie at the nape of the neck are “very ethereal,” recommends Kauffman. • Pair a veil with a jeweled headpiece for extra drama.

The Wildcard

THE CAPE For the bride with an eclectic style, try a cape to accessorize your wedding outfit. From waist-length lace capelets to light and airy floor-length tulle capes, this unique option is a broad category and can work well for snowy, rainy, or just plain dramatic weddings. “I have done a couple for brides, mainly using a sheer net that has pearls,” says Kauffman. In fact, Kauffman wore a cape to her own wedding because she did not want to wear a veil, and it suited the vintage romantic Celtic vibes of her wedding. “It is a nice way to cover up, rather than wearing a shrug,” says Kauffman.

How to Get the Look :

• Know your dress before adding a cape or any other accessories to the look. Trying to choose accessories before the gown can overcomplicate your theme. • Emphasize the grandeur of the cape with regal decorations and embellishments. JANUARY/FEBRUARY JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE

AUGUST 14, 2021 I grew up in State College and with a love of the Nittany Lions. Christian grew up about an hour and a half away in Camp Hill with a passion for athletics. After high school, we both attended Penn State. Me, mostly for the social scene, while Christian had a full football scholarship. At Penn State, we circulated among the same group of friends, went to the same parties and bars, lived on the same street—we have even found pictures of us at parties and bars where one of us will be in the background—but never really knew one another. It wasn’t until a chance encounter a decade later, while we both were visiting home after moving to new cities, that we connected. I lived in Nashville at the time, while Christian was moving back to Camp Hill from Philadelphia. We talked for a few weeks long distance before Christian won me over with an official “first date” to a true PA staple, Hoss’s (I’m serious) after I had mentioned how much I missed it while living in the south. I moved north soon after and the rest is history.

Kelsey Grant

SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

AUGUST 6, 2021 Grant and Kelsey originally met and were friends in high school but went their separate ways after graduating. Once into their college years, they reconnected and immediately fell head over heels for each other, almost like love at first sight, even though they had already known one another. After dating for a few years, Kelsey nearly died after her chronic illness, Lyme Disease, infiltrated her entire central nervous system, and Grant clung to her even harder, proving he loved her in sickness and in health well before he ever vowed it to her. He became her caretaker and has helped her regain her life back as she has battled for her health over the last six years. When Kelsey became disabled, she knew she had to slow down and be less of the constant go getter she had always been. Grant brought her home her first house plant to take care of during that time, and the rest was history. The two grew to learn that they both are blessed with green thumbs and a passion for working with plants. They have even built their own greenhouse together in their backyard where they have spent countless hours working together, tending to their plants. Grant even proposed in their greenhouse! When the COVID shutdowns in early 2020 forced them to postpone their April wedding, they chose to get married on their original date anyway, and they couldn't think of a place more special than the very same greenhouse in their backyard. Surrounded by all of their plants and only their parents, in the place that means the most to them, they exchanged their intimate nuptials and joined together as husband and wife. They waited patiently through 3 other postponements until they could celebrate with the big wedding they had originally planned, and they both say it was 100% worth the wait! With only their most immediate family and friends, they celebrated a day neither of them would ever forget. They kept true to their alternative and edgy styles with the color scheme and overall theme of the wedding. They wanted it to have a glamorous Great Gatsby yet tastefully goth feel to it. They also wanted to really bring the outdoors indoors, and their amazing team of vendors helped them do just that! From the terrarium centerpieces, to the houseplant seating chart table, you better believe there were plants EVERYWHERE! Everything was just as unique as they are.

AUGUST 7, 2021 Diane and Akinwumi, who goes by Sam, met on the campus of Gettysburg College back in 2008 when Diane’s roommate asked her friend, one of the groomsmen, to help move a couch in their dorm. Fortunately, Ben, one of the groomsmen, brought his friend Sam to help him move the couch. From that moment, their relationship continued to strengthen and grow. After college, Sam moved up to central Pennsylvania to be with Diane and started a job in Information Technology Security, while Diane was working as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit. Everything was then put on hold for Diane to go back to school and receive her Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia. After gathering their families together, Sam proposed at home with the most important people in their lives to witness and share in the occasion, right before Christmas in her last year of anesthesia school. After Diane’s graduation and waiting almost a decade to get married, they planned their classic estate wedding at Linwood Estate with the most talented vendor team who were able to turn their vision into a reality!

JANUARY 16, 2021 Nick and I met at York College of Pennsylvania during a hand lettering class. We had our first date on a crisp November day where we got Starbucks and watched the sunset at Lake Redman. Then Nick asked me to start dating him right after Christmas by getting us Starbucks coffees and writing me a note about how much I meant to him, at the end of which he told me to look under my coffee sleeve. “Will you be my girlfriend?” was written on a piece of tracing paper that was taped on the inside of my coffee sleeve. This was so special to our relationship since tracing paper is something we commonly use in hand lettering, and we always write notes back and forth to each other. He proposed about 2 years later in September 2019 while watching the sunset at a spot that overlooked the Susquehanna River and the place where he asked me to be his girlfriend. It was this connection and meaning to the holiday and winter season that made it perfect for us to have a winter wonderland wedding. We wanted our future to be surrounded by the same feelings that we had that sparked our relationship, and what better place than inside our very own snow globe?

NOAH

NOVEMBER 14, 2020 Noah and I met at Winthrop University, back in 2007. I saw him across a crowded auditorium and was immediately interested, even though I had no idea who he was. We became friends and stayed friends for years. We both were in and out of relationships and eventually decided to take a shot at dating in 2012. We always envisioned having a small and intimate wedding with our friends and family. With all of the uncertainty over the past couple of years, we were eventually married in a small 18th century barn on a beautiful autumn evening. We’re thankful that unlike some couples, we never had to reschedule our wedding. The date we initially chose was the day we got married. We did end up switching venues due to the indoor restrictions continuing to change. Like many COVID weddings our initial vision wasn’t the wedding that we ended up having. Our first venue was a large industrial space, and our wedding venue was an old tobacco barn. We were so thankful that even though the restrictions kept changing daily, we were able to get married. Overall, our wedding turned into something more beautiful than I ever could have imagined. We had the dream team of vendors who were extremely flexible and completely understood the vibe we were going for. We’re also incredibly thankful to our family and friends who traveled from across the country during the pandemic to end our day!

MAY 8, 2021 Mitchell and I met as freshman at Shippensburg University in 2010. Mitchell is my best friend and the love of my life. We have spent the last eleven years growing together and overcoming obstacles that I never imagined possible. As we both came from different cultural backgrounds, I was nervous to introduce Mitchell to my family. To my surprise, my family embraced him with open arms and hearts. I always wanted to have my own "Big Fat Indian Wedding" in India, but due to the struggles that came with COVID, all of that seemed like a distant dream. Mitchell and I decided we would have a Hindu ceremony wedding in the States, where most of our friends and family would be able to attend. Our first venue we saw was Lauxmont Farms. As I walked through the Rotunda and Japanese Gardens, a vision came into my mind of how I could incorporate all the things I have always wanted at my wedding. Lauxmont farms was the first and last venue we saw. After that, everything became apparent as we planned the wedding. We picked vendors that could bring my vision to reality, and let me tell you, they did just that! Our wedding was everything I ever imagined and more. I look forward to my happily ever after with my person.

Bringing in a variety of specialty catering carts can be a fabulous way to offer a variety of libations and gifts to your guests. CHARACTER COFFEE CART charactercoffeecart.com

Love artisan coffees and teas? Book a specialty coffee cart for your wedding to really impress your fellow coffee loving friends. Character Coffee Cart creates an array of hot themed drinks specific to any event. For example, the crew created a menu of Alice in Wonderland themed hot drinks and cocktails for a fall party with its “Queen of Hearts” drink consisting of organic four-blend espresso, creme de cacao, raspberry liqueur, Irish cream, and white chocolate. This is a fun cart for warming up chilly guests at an outdoor wedding or simply keeping a cozy atmosphere alive.

PENNY’S ICE CREAM CART pennysicecreamtruck.com

In what once started as a bread truck, Penny’s Ice Cream Cart now travels through Central PA serving a delicious variety of scoopable ice cream from its truck and cart. With different pricing packages available and unique pairings of ice creams, cones, and toppings, this is a one-stop-shop for easy and portable desserts, sure to please everyone. There are even dairy free options available.

THE CANTERING COCKTAIL MOBILE BAR

laurengemberlingevents.net/the-cantering-cocktail

A thoughtfully designed bar can bring people together, bonding over cocktails or simply shooting the breeze. With the Cantering Cocktail Mobile Bar, the bar comes to you fully stocked. The mobile bar can be rented and used by itself, arranged with a plethora of selected alcohols and cocktails. Or, staff the bar with your preferred bartender for bigger events. This is a wonderfully unique option for an outdoor or remote location wedding.

THE BUBBLY BAR BY THE TRAVELING TAP tratap.com

Packed into a vintage Piaggio Moto Ape, enjoy wine, prosecco, craft beer, and cocktails out of four taps craftily hidden in the rear of the vehicle. The vintage Piaggio, a cousin of the Vespa, looks adorable and whimsical decorated with flowers and not only provides an effective bar set-up, but your guests will also love the photo opportunities. With just three wheels and measuring barely five feet tall, the retro vehicle is functional and can be crucial in defining a vintage wedding theme.

OLIVIA’S FLOWER TRUCK oliviasflowertruck.com

Okay, okay, we know this isn’t a catering cart to be exact, but who doesn’t dream of adding some floral flair to their wedding in a non-traditional way? Enter Olivia’s Flower Truck, a 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside pickup truck beautifully filled with fresh flowers for your wedding. Owner Jenelle grows the flowers herself, following a lifelong passion for gardening and flowers passed down to her from her grandmothers. This cute truck provides an adorable photo op for your guests and brings the joy of spring and new growth to your event, not to mention fresh, sustainable, and locally grown flowers.
