Joe Korba and moving on to love again; as lead singer Jeff
From The Editor’s Desk. Some songs can melt even the most jaded, hopeless romantic’s heart. Prior to the digital music revolution making a mix-tape (or burning a mix CD) for your significant other was a young romance staple. These are some sappier selections from my mix-tape repertoire for your Valentine’s Day enjoyment. 1. ‘In My Life’ – The Beatles This is the most beautiful song The Beatles ever recorded. It narrowly edges out George Harrison’s Something when it comes to capturing the kindof-sad, kind-of-sweet feeling of reflecting back on past love. With a delicate, pretty melody and some great John Lennon lyricism In My Life is a nostalgic masterpiece. 2. ‘Always on my Mind’ – Willie Nelson Old country songs are a true romantic’s medium, with lyrics about love and loss. Willie Nelson’s 1982 version of the early ‘60s hit really strikes a chord. 3. ‘Either Way’ – Wilco A melancholy love song on Wilco’s poppiest album, Sky Blue Sky, about accepting the past
Tweedy points out – “someday the sun will shine again, either way.” 4. ‘The Reasons’ – The Weakerthans This is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. The Weakerthans have a way of conveying heavy feelings of loss and longing through their lyrics and, especially, lead singer John K. Sampson’s voice; which just oozes loneliness and isolation. The song’s marked contrast to the rest of their catalog is why such a corny and elated love song like The Reasons seems so sincere. A line like – “You might roll your eyes at this, But I’m so glad that you exist,” – would make many listeners roll their eyes at the pure sappiness, but Sampson sounds so earnest that it works. 5. ‘Cupid’s Victim’ – Tiger Army These punk/rockabilly revivalists have plenty of ‘50s greaser sentiment on almost all of their songs but Cupid’s Victim stands out. If you like great, upbeat, rocking, upright-bass slapping music coupled with romantic lyrics, give these guys a listen.

Betty Lou
Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever Mix: An adoptable dog in Bethlehem Medium • Adult • Female Betty Lou...... Well we have all great and wonderful things to say about this girl! She landed herself in an Ohio shelter, running the streets. No owner was found. In Ohio, any dog that resembles a pit bull or looks to have pit bull in them are put to sleep. There are breed specific laws, and Betty was going to die, but the shelter staff fell in love with her. She showed nothing but perfect behavior. Our rescue was contacted. Betty loves to swim in her baby pool, she loves to play with other dogs, she loves kids, and everyone she meets. We believe she is a labrador pit bull mix. She is about 3 years old, spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and heart-worm negative. What else does she need? How about a loving family to spend the rest of her life with! A Healthy Mouth At Any Age (NAPS)—A healthy mouth is an asset at any age—contributing to your general health and im proving your quality of life. “Not long ago, most people lost their teeth by middle age,” says Dr. William R. Calnon, American Dental Association (ADA) president. “Today, thanks to community water fluoridation, good dental habits and regular dental visits, more people are keeping their teeth. The ADA promotes the benefits of senior-friendly dental offices with dental staff trained to understand the special needs of the elderly. “The ADA encourages caregivers and patients to discuss all treatment recommendations with their dentists and to ask questions to clarify anything they may not understand.” Your Age Affects Your Teeth Older adults might not feel pain from deep cavities because their teeth are less sensitive. More than 90 percent of seniors take at least one prescription medication daily and a common side effect is dry mouth, which can contribute to bad breath, tooth decay, mouth sores and infections. As you age, fillings, crowns and bridges can shrink and crack, letting cavities form. Having these
“I want prescriptions from my local pharmacist, not a stranger.” There’s a bill in Harrisburg that lets you decide where you get prescriptions besides mail order. Prefer your local pharmacist? You’ll have that option. Same cost as mail order. Just more choice. And billions of dollars-and jobs-that stay in PA. In recent surveys consumers say they prefer buying their prescriptions from their neighborhood pharmacy instead of mail order. What’s more, Consumer Reports recommends independent pharmacies because “independents are far more attuned to your total health picture.” Tell your legislator you want a prescription for choice. It’s easy. Visit legis.state.pa.us and click on “Who’s my Legislator?” Or call 215-464-9890. Vote “yes” on H.B. 511; S.B. 201

problems corrected early will help keep the mouth February healthy for many years to is Dental come. Health Visiting your dentist Month regularly lets him or her treat tooth problems when they’re manageable and check overall mouth health. This includes looking for signs of oral cancer, which in the early stages might not cause any symptoms or pain. More than 20 percent of those 75 and older have moderate or severe gum disease, in which the gums begin to pull away from teeth, forming pockets where bacteria can grow unchecked. Regular checkups can help prevent gum disease. Caretakers should help older adults keep regular dental visits. Little problems that go untreated can turn into big problems, even lifethreatening ones, later on, such as developing a possibly life-threatening abscess. Preventing dental disease is the best approach. Tips for Denture Wearers If you wear dentures, it’s still important to practice good oral hygiene. Every morning, brush your gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth with a soft-bristled brush before you put in your dentures. This removes bacteria and stimulates circulation, which can make your mouth feel healthy and fresh. Your dentist will provide you with instructions about how long your dentures may be worn each day. Use denture cleansers and overnight soaking solutions to help keep dentures fresh and clean. Tips for a Healthy Mouth • Adopt healthy dental habits at home. • Make smart choices about diet and lifestyle. • Visit your dentist regularly. • Learn more at www.ada.org.

Funny But Useful Tips! Even though we are having one of the mildest winters I can remember, Winter Vacations in beautiful places are upon us and Spring and Summer are right around the corner! G, a client and I were in the salon talking about vacations and crazy tips to keep you looking beautiful, at least one that I never thought of. First, don’t forget to protect your nose and the tips of your ears from the sun. Ladies end up pulling their hair up and men put hats on exposing those ear tips to sunlight they never usually see. So what do you do when you don’t have sun block on you? Do you have a chap stick with SPF in it?! Pull out your chap stick, put a little on your finger and put that on your ear tips, and while you’re at it the tip of your nose. Now you have 3 uses for that chap stick! Second tip…hair care! Most ladies I know get frustrated when their color fades or hair lightens in the sun. G’s suggestion is to use SPF lotion. When you’re at the beach and you don’t want your hair to fade, after you are done applying your suntan lotion with SPF in it, don’t wipe your hands off in

your towel, wipe them off in your hair! The SPF gets on your hair and protects it from the sun. It comes out when you wash your hair the next time! Have fun on your vacations and getting ready for Spring and Summer! Steps to Dating Success in Your 60s and Senior Years It can be said that life is all about meeting new people and sharing new experiences. As the senior years descend, let’s face it. Things can get lonely. Sometimes, people end up alone because they don’t take the time or the initiative to talk to others. The good news- it’s not too late to start over again! Today is a new day! Your sixties and up can be especially sweet if you have the right person beside you. Dating, long term relationships, companionship, or new friendships can be a challenge to find, especially if you have been “out of the loop” for some time. Here is some expert advice from Chrissy Bellofatto, a matchmaker for 18 years and owner of Perfect Partners with offices in Bethlehem, PA and Franklin, NJ. 1) Be open to meeting new people with the attitude of having fun!
If you think you will enjoy yourself or if you think you will not, you are probably correct. Your attitude has a lot to do with the results! 2) Be open minded about people. He/she may not be Mr./Mrs. Right for you, but may very well turn out to be a good friend and companion. 3) Don’t sweat the small stuff! We all have different quirks- that’s what makes it interesting! 4) Smile! It brightens your face as well as the atmosphere. It may even make your eyes twinkle! 5) Show interest in the other person. Ask openended questions that cannot be answered with a simple “yes” or ‘no”. And save the highly personal, sensitive and depressing topics for later! 6) Dress in something nice that makes you feel good about yourself. Comfort is great, but, guys, show your date she is worth the effort of dressing up for! Perfect Partners 610-332-3402, is a personal matchmaking/introduction service which holds to the old fashioned way of meeting people, people who have been pre-screened and suggested by professionals based on compatibility who are looking for lasting relationships.

Moving & Shaking
January has been busy at the Northampton Senior Center. They started a crochet/ knitting class on Friday's 9:30L-R: Bob, Rev. Kurtz, & Patty 11:00, learning & sharing a lot of new ideas. Music with Steve Meyers & yours truly as they "jammed" on the 19th, with keyboard & guitar. Birthdays were celebrated with a special guest this month, Reverend Heather Kurtz helped to put out the flame. It does seem that "meatloaf" for lunch is a big pull, who would have figured? February is looking to be another month of parties, of course with Valentine's Day. They also have a "Sadie Hawkins" party planned for Leap Day. Dressin' as rednecks & hillbillys is part of the plan. Entertainment with the "Cracked Walnuts"(washboard, banjo & spoons) and a few other surprises, Yee-Haw!!! Celebrating 5 years of New Ownership September 2011

Have you had any exciting adventures lately? Many people are adventurous. They like new and unusual experiences. A few people even like to do things that are very bold or full of risks. These people like danger and thrills. I love new adventures but I think that we should leave the dangerous, bold acts to the characters in movies and books! Did you know that some of the ideas for adventure stories are based on the events of real people’s lives?

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life." The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So why is the groom wearing black?”

Miller-Keystone Blood Center will conduct its bi-monthly community blood drive at the First United Church of Christ, next to Palmerton Boro Hall, on Monday, February 13th, from 12:30 to 5:30 P.M. Please note the new time. This visit is sponsored by the Aquashicola Fire Company. The goal for each drive is to have at least 75 potential donors register. Our last visit, in December, fell short of this, with only 60 potential donors, and 52 units collected. Since local drives no longer have the Trima machines, on which one donor can give up to 3 units, this makes it even more difficult to reach our goals. All healthy potential donors are urged to attend. Previous donors will receive a phone call and/or e-mail message, reminding them to make an appointment. New donors are always needed, to offset those who are ill or away. Minimum requirements are: 17 years old, 110 pounds, no tattoos or body piercing within the last 12 months, general good health. Donors new to Miller are requested to bring photo ID, such as a driver's license. Previous Miller donors should bring their Miller cards. Advantages to donors, in addition to the chance
to save up to three lives, is that you receive a free min-physical: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, hemoglobin (blood iron level) and, if you donate, total cholesterol, and fresh sandwiches and donuts not offered at most other sites. For questions of medical eligibility, call Miller, toll-free, during office hours at 1-800-223-6667. For more information, or to make an appointment, call George Ashman at 610-826-2097. Donors with appointments are given priority at Registration; however, walk-ins are always welcome.
LT Historical Society Feb. Program
Come to the special program on Monday, February 27, at 7 p.m., in the Hope Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall and learn more about the Northampton Food Bank. Providing food for those in need is a top priority for the food bank. A representative from the food bank will talk about the organization and how it serves the needy in the area. The program is free but it would be appreciated if persons attending would bring a non-perishable food item along to contribute to the food bank. We can make a difference in Continued on Page 39

The Gift of Laughter “Now Sarah said, ‘God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” When was the last time that you laughed? I am not talking a chuckle or a ha ha type of laugh, but a good ol’ belly laugh that brings tears to your eyes! This is the type of laugh that often help me get through the day. I think that laughing is really a blessing in disguise that we have received from God. However, when we think about that idea, what a delightful gift! We might not consider this a gift, but when we think about the many wonderful things that God has provided for us I feel we must include laughter among them. Laughter has the ability to lighten the atmosphere of a room and bring friends together. Laughter can make things that seemed insurmountable possible. Sometimes when life seems too busy or laughing seems impossible, pray for God’s sense of humor to empower you for the day. May God bless your life with uncontrollable laughter, so much so that everyone will hear! Remember that our God loves a good laugh! As Sarah has said, “God has brought laughter for me.” May God do the same for you. Rev. Heather Kurtz Grace UCC Northampton

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Parkland has High Hopes
The Parkland wrestling squad has been a force to be reckoned with this winter. As of January 29 they boasted an overall record of 16-1 with a league record of 7-0. The squad has had much success this season as a team and individually. As of January 26, Sophomore Ethan Lizak is 17-1 in the 106 lb. weight class and junior Shaun Heist is 18-2 competing in the 220 lb. and the 285 lb. weight classes. In the pre-season, head coach Ryan Nunamaker had big aspirations for his wrestlers and it’s panning out pretty well so far. “We thought if we continued to work really hard in the offseason as well as the preseason that our team would have the opportunity to be pretty successful this season. We have some depth in certain areas of our line-up that has enabled us to juggle our line-up from time to time to give
Nu-Finish Reglazing & Repair
us the best opportunity to win. Our wrestlers have been completely unselfish in doing what is best for the program,” Nunamaker said. Although the Trojans are having a spectacular league season, they aren’t the only ones at the top of the Lehigh Valley Conference. Bethlehem Catholic is also 7-0 in the LVC and Easton has a 6-1 league record. Both of those teams can give Parkland fits the rest of this season and in the District 11 Duals. Although the Trojans have been able to breeze through this season so far, Nunamaker is still being realistic about the District 11 Duals, “If we are healthy and get everyone at the correct weight, we have a chance to win the District XI Duals. It is certainly one of our goals for the season and we have the ability to reach that goal. There are so many quality programs in the [Lehigh Valley], so we will have to continue to improve each week in order to make it a reality.” The Trojans wrestling team is a great group that are dedicated to do whatever it takes to win a meet. They have had a lot success this season, but they have the toughest part of their journey ahead of them. We will have to see if they can grind it out.

Blue Bombers Flying High this Winter
“We have the potential to do very well.” Those are the words of Palmerton’s wrestling head coach, David Lavin. He is correct in that statement, but the reality of it all is that his team is doing well. Palmerton has a 12-5 overall record and a 5-2 record in the Colonial League, as of January 29. They are in very good shape heading in to the District 11 Duals which kick off Friday, February 3. On top of
Page 37
looking forward to the District playoffs, Palmerton needed to win a matchup against Northern Lehigh on January 31 to make the league playoffs. By the time of publishing, this meet would have already occurred. Each wrestler for Palmerton does their job at each meet. They might not necessarily win their match, but if the team wins, they had a successful day. With so many powerful big schools this winter, Palmerton is being overlooked a little. Look for them to make an impact at the District 11 Duals. By Tyler Trumbauer

Geld mache, weess ken Mensch. Ich blanz mei Blumme in der Grund un die Advertisments blanz ich in der Scrapkessel. -Florence Baver February 4, 1954 The other day I cleaned my kitchen cupboard. I took the old paper off the shelves. Then I cut off nice new white paper from a roll which I bought at store and put it on the shelves. Since the paper was too wide, I needed to trim off a piece. I wanted to throw those pieces away, but I said, “No, I can write my shopping lists on them.” Then my mother-in-law said, “If only we had something like that to write on when I was young. Paper was so uncommon then, that I kept together the old sugar bags to use for writing lists.” Here is something to reflect on: How many a piece of nice paper today is thrown in the garbage can, which years ago a little child always had been so happy to have. Someone just told me that her father used to have a store years back. However full the store was in that time, in winter there were always many older fellows sitting around the stove. Many of them chewed tobacco. There was no objection to that, but some always missed the ash bucket or spittoon. Then the store keeper needed to make signs and hang them up around the place. One of those signs read, “Don’t spit on the ceiling, we can’t find our stepladder.” Whether the groundhog saw its shadow or not, now is the time to look over the seed catalogs, and acquire all your seed items and go through them, to see what you must sow first. Last week I got an advertisement in the mail to buy a book called Moon Planting. No man knows what will come on the market next for someone to make money! I’ll plant my flowers in the ground and that advertisement I’ll plant in the garbage can.

What are you curled up with? Look Of Love (NAPS)—A glamorous spa provides a deceptively idyllic setting in “The Look of Love,” a delicious new mystery by New York Times bestselling author Mary Jane Clark. When the owner of Elysium, an exclusive spa and plastic surgery center, offers Piper Donovan an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles, she accepts. All she has to do is create a dazzling and unique wedding cake. The job also appeals to Piper because it will give her the time to sort out her feelings for handsome FBI agent Jack Lombardi. The ultraluxurious spa caters to the rich and famous in need of a little “refreshing”—a nip here, a tuck there, a little Botox, a little detox. Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, Elysium seems picture perfect. But no sooner does Piper arrive than a guest is brutally murdered in one of the private bungalows. She soon discovers that beneath the glamorous surface of this idyllic oasis lies an ugly truth—and a cold-blooded plan for murder.
The Associated Press has called Clark “one of the most talented storytellers around.” Like Piper Donovan, Clark has a mother who made customized cakes for the neighborhood kids when she was growing up. After a career at CBS News and writing 12 media thrillers, the author envisioned the Piper Donovan/Wedding Cake mystery series. Part of the appeal may be the great recipes the books include, such as this one for Icing on the Cupcake Cream-Cheese Frosting. ½ cup butter (1 stick), at room temperature 1½ cups cream cheese, also at room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 cups confectioners’ sugar Using an electric mixer at medium speed, beat the butter, cream cheese and vanilla until smooth. Turn the mixer down to lowest speed and add the confectioners’ sugar, a little at a time, until it’s completely combined and smooth. Continued on Page 45

Look of Love Continued from Page 44 The series has also garnered positive reviews. Library Journal said that “Touches of humor keep the mystery light, the baking subplot keeps it cozy, and there is enough going on with family and Piper’s newly developing relationship to keep it real,” and Romantic Times gave it four stars. The book is available wherever books are sold. Nature Gap Feeder Watch The Lehigh Gap Nature Center will conduct its annual Lehigh Gap Area Feeder Watch on the weekend of February 17 through the 19. This will be the 16th year of collecting this valuable data and additional feeder watchers are needed. The objective of the Feeder Watch is to sample the numbers and species of birds visiting back-yard feeders on a particular winter day at as many feeders as possible in an area around Lehigh Gap (approx. a 15 mile radius). Anyone in the area with one or
more bird feeders of any type in their yard who can identify the individual species of birds that visit the feeders, is invited to participate. Volunteers are asked to spend a few hours throughout the day on February 17, 18, or 19 observing their feeders and recording any visitors. The Lehigh Gap Area Feeder Watch is an opportunity for back-yard bird watchers to make a contribution to a scientific study. WANT TO SAVE 20% ON YOUR HEATING BILL? If you have a fireplace in your home, that’s how much heat you can be losing up the flue! Do a simple candle test… light a candle and SLOWLY go around the edge of your fireplace opening – or the edge of the fireplace doors, for those homeowners with doors. See what happens to the flame. From the midpoint and up across the top, the flame will move slightly TOWARD the fireplace. This shows the heat leaving your house. At the bottom of the fireplace, the flame will move towards your room. This is the COLD AIR coming down the backside of the flue and heading straight into your cozy warm home!
This well constructed, superbly eningeered damper eliminates 90% of the winter heat and summer cooling loss that leaks past your current damper. It also eliminates downdrafts and keeps moisture and animals out of your chimney and home. Moisture in your chimney causes unwelcome odors and leads to deterioration of bricks and mortar. The Lyemance Top-Sealing Damper works year round to protect your chimney. That’s why thousands are installed each year.
The Top Sealing Damper was originally invented as a replacement damper for rusted-out heatilator fireplace dampers. We have installed 900+ top-mount dampers, 300 as replacement dampers and 600 on masonry fireplaces. They save energy, reduce cold air drafts, make the room quieter, and make starting a fire easier because of the warm column of air that has replaced the standard cold, wet column of air that is normally in your flue.
Professionals always sell the sturdiest, most durable, and most effective products availOpen the damper or able – the ones you lock it tight with this can’t find in your local handle mounted in stores. Why? They the firebox. stake their reputation on what they sell. Lyemance Dampers are only sold through professionals because it takes a professional to properly size and install a Lyemance Damper. Once installed, it’s easy as pie to use – with a simple tug on the handle, it’s open and with another tug, it’s closed. Why wait? Begin saving energy and increase your comfort now. Don’t waste another dollar in energy loss – begin your long friendship with Lyemance, the leader in top-sealing dampers.

LTRT has been awarded another grant from Northampton County DCED and intends to use the funds to further these goals. Passport To History Northampton County
The historical societies and organizations of Northampton County are pleased to announce the issuance of a Passport to History for Northampton County. The Passport program was launched in conjunction with the opening celebration of Northampton County Courthouse Week, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Northampton County Courthouse at its “new” location at 669 Washington Street in Easton. In 2012, the county will be celebrating its 260th year. The year-round 2012 Passport to History program offers 260 years in 26 stops. The limited edition Passports will be offered free of charge by the nineteen participating organizations. As passport holders visit each site during the 2012 calendar year, they will present their “passports” to be stamped. When holders have successfully visited every location, the full passport and their successful travel through Northampton County will be documented. Awards will be given to those well-traveled visitors at a special Northampton County History Day in March of 2013. The passports encourage visitors (residents and non-residents) to explore 26 sites that bring Northampton County to life: • 1753 Bachmann Publick House, Easton • 1796 Ralston-McKeen House & 1786 Wolf Academy, Bath
