Spuds & Suds Q&A
1. What was the inspiration behind creating
the Spuds & Suds Festival? The Greater Bath Chamber was inspired by the community and the rich history of potato farming in the area. Twin Maple Farm and Padula’s Potato Farm are still active in the community and supplying potatoes today. 2. Should festival goers be on the lookout for anything new this year? If so, what? New food trucks and vendors, lots of creative potato eats and new music performances. There will be a women’s growler challenge added to the
activities and Weyerbacher Brewing is making a new beer, special for the festival. We are also creating a beer garden, so festival goers can enjoy their brew or wine with others at a table and listen to music and take in the sights. 3. What is something unique about Spuds & Suds, that other festivals just don’t have? Spuds & Suds Festival is the only street festival that celebrates the potato in the Lehigh Valley with bands, beer, demos and games. You will find the potato fried and crispy, mashed and buttery, loaded and sweet. The festival is also occupied by quaint and exceptional art galleries like Blend and Galleria 126, an antique shop S. Seem Antiques & Artisans and a local favorite Red Wolf Bar & Grille.

12 tricks For buying The ripest Summer produce Huffingtonpost.com
1. When it comes to pineapple, look for a golden color and sweet scent. The first sign of a pineapple’s ripeness is its color. It should be golden brown, without much green color left at the base. A sweet smell also indicates this fruit’s ripeness. If a pineapple doesn’t give off a scent, it’s not quite ripe yet. But if it smells a tad vinegary, it’s overripe. 2. Cantaloupes that are ready to crack open show it in their weight. A ripe cantaloupe will feel heavy and smell sweet. (If the cantaloupe smells overly sweet, chances are it’s overripe.) The most dependable test of a cantaloupe’s ripeness is to slightly push Continued on Page 8

at the stem end; if it gives a bit, then it’s ready to eat. 3. A ripe eggplant should be tight and elastic, never soft. Every part of the eggplant provides signs of its ripeness. The stem and cap indicate freshness. If they’re bright green, the eggplant is still fresh. If it’s starting to turn yellow or brown, it’s past its

prime. The skin of an eggplant should be deep and dark in color and free of scars or blemishes. When you put pressure on the fruit, the skin should be tight and elastic. If indentations remain where your fingertips weere, the eggplant isn’t ready yet. 4. Watermelon sounds hollow and feels heavy when ripe. A ripe watermelon is heavy, indicating that it’s full of water. To check for ripeness you can tap on the watermelon. If it sounds hollow, it’s ripe. 5. Don’t judge a tomato by its color. For ripeness, do a touch test. You can tell most tomatoes are ripe thanks to their red color. But not all tomatoes are red — they come in orange, yellow, green and purple shades. The best way to check for ripeness is with the touch test. If it yields slightly to the touch, it’s at optimal ripeness. Any more than that and it’s past ripe; any less, and it needs a couple more days. 6. Corn tells you everything by its husk. If the husk is green and hasn’t dried out, the ear of corn is still ripe. Corn’s silk threads are also indicative of ripeness. They should cling to the kernels, and the kernels should be plump.

7. Mangos will give slightly to the touch when ready to eat. The only way to know when a mango is ready to eat is by touch. If it gives slightly when touched, it’s ready. Sometimes the mango will also give off a fruity aroma at the stem end when ripe. 8. Strawberries will always smell as good as they taste. You can tell a strawberry is ripe by its scent — it should smell exactly like you want it to taste. If they don’t smell like anything, they probably don’t taste like much. They should also be bright red and free of blemishes. 9. The ripest honeydews are golden in color. Unlike cantaloupe, you can tell a honeydew melon is ripe by the appearance of its skin. It should be waxy and smooth with a golden — not yellow — color. 10. When testing avocados, use the palm of your hand, not your fingers. Not all avocado varieties look the same when ripe. Some of them, like Hass avocados, turn dark purple when ripe and others remain light green. The best way to check for ripeness is through touch; an avocado should give slightly to touch when ripe. Use your palm to test for ripeness. If
you test with your fingers, you may bruise the fruit. 11. Peaches give it away with the color near the stem. When peaches are ripe, they turn a reddish and yellowish color. The part of the peach that was in direct contact with the sun becomes red, and the part facing away — what is known as the ground color — becomes yellow. 12. Plums show their ripeness in the quality, not color, of their skin. When looking for ripeness in a plum, you want a slightly soft and smooth skin. Skip any that are wrinkled, hard or mushy.

Eight kitchen hacks to save time, Get organized, and stay sane Greatist.com 1. Prevent brown sugar from hardening Help brown sugar stay soft and scoopable by tossing an orange peel or a slice of apple along
with the sugar into an airtight container. For a quick fix, microwave brown sugar next to a small glass of water. The moisture within the microwave will help break up the block of sweetener. 2. Avoid plastic wrap disasters Had enough of wrangling plastic wrap? Store the roll in the fridge to store leftovers with less of a hassle. Chilling the wrap makes it easier to transport it from the roll to your bowl. 3. Check if eggs are still (incredibly) edible Gently place raw eggs in a bowl of cold water to see if they’ve gone bad. If the egg sinks to the bottom, it’s a-OK. If it floats, it has seen better days. Over time, the liquid inside eggs evaporates through the porous shell, leaving a gas bubble inside. The floatier it is, the older it is.

4. Peel citrus fruits without the mess To avoid the mess and frustration, roll citrus fruits and/or microwave them for a minute for easy peeling (just be careful to not burn yourself). 5. Prevent onions from making you weep To stop onion-induced tears, freeze the onion before chopping. (Note: This trick only works if you’re planning to cook the onions later— otherwise, after the onion thaws out, the raw pieces will be a bit soggy!) Or if you want to look absolutely crazy when your housemate walks in, put a slice of bread in your mouth (partially sticking out) to absorb the irritant gas before it reaches the eyes. 6. Keep pots from boiling over Prevent overboiling by placing a wooden spoon across a pot. Because wood is not a good material for conducting heat, the hot water stays away from the handle. 7. Reheat pasta in the microwave the right way Reheating a giant blob of sauced spaghetti can get tricky—sizzling around the perimeter, ice cold

in the middle. For even warming, shape leftover pasta into a donut (with a hole in the middle) on a plate. 8. Learn to fight fires Before stopping, dropping, and rolling, sprinkle baking soda onto a small grease or electrical fire to extinguish the flames. When heated, baking soda releases carbon dioxide, which helps stifle the fire.
