Moore Township sisters Raise money for St. Jude’s With lemonade stand
By KERI LINDENMUTH The issue of masks in schools has been hotly debated across the nation, and that debate came to Northampton on Monday, August 23, during the Northampton Area School District Board of School Directors meeting. Despite the threats of reelection voiced to them by a small crowd of frustrated parents, every member of the school board voted in favor of requiring masks for what they say is the safety of their students. The mask mandate will be in effect for all students, staff and visitors to any of the district’s school buildings starting on August 25. It will run until October 1. At that time, the board and administrators will analyze community spread data and the advice of local health experts to determine how to move forward. Disposable masks will be available for students, staff, and visitors. Students who do not abide

After writing all these columns and driving around the countryside, Larry Oberly and this writer lament the slow loss of the sturdy barns built on many Pennsylvania Dutch farms. So, Larry took his trusty camera to catalog some of the remaining barns in Allen and East Allen townships. (Additional barn picture on page 7.)

Lemonade Stand
Continued from page 1
After a successful first day, the sisters decided to move their stand closer to a main road so they could raise even more awareness. That’s when their generous endeavor really took off. First, neighbors started spread-
ing the word. Then, the Moore Township Police Department posted a photo of the lemonade stand on their Facebook page. The photo garnered over 300 likes and nearly 40 shares. “They thought they were in trouble for selling lemonade without a permit,” laughs Denise, talking about the moment Moore Township Police Officer Steinmetz approached their stand. Instead, Officer Steinmetz simply wanted to support the sisters and
refresh himself on a hot summer day. Since then, the community has come out in full support of the girls. In total, nearly $240 has been raised for St. Jude’s over the course of the summer. With summer vacation winding down, Denise says the girls may do one or two more lemonade stands before it’s back-toschool time. But she has a feeling that Madison and Paige may already be planning for next year.
“It has been a learning experience and they are getting out in the community, so I am proud of them.”

data showing the tying of a record-breaking median sales price first seen just one month ago and a new record for days on market, showing that summer isn't the only thing that is hot around the Lehigh Valley. "The National Association of REALTORS® reported inventory of homes for sale nationwide rose slightly in June as more sellers list their homes, hoping to take advantage of record-high sales prices across the country," said GLVR CEO Justin Porembo. "Even with renewed home seller interest, inventory overall from a year ago remains 18.8% lower nationwide, according to NAR, and 18.0% lower here at home." With inventory still not at sufficient, comfortable levels – there were just 895 units in July for Lehigh and Northampton counties – the median sales price increased 15.7 percent to $275,000, a tie of a record-breaking price first achieved in June. In addition, homes sold, on average, in 13 days, another new record. Other notable housing statistics for July include: New listings decreased just slightly – 0.5 percent – to 1,089. Pending sales were down 9.0 percent to 897. Closed sales slipped 4.7 percent to 877. Months supply of inventory was down 29.4 percent to 1.2 months. Continued on page 3

Boy, that was some rain we got last week. I read that Tatamy had the highest rainfall amount in the Lehigh Valley at just shy of 5 inches. It was at the beginning of August last year that we got all that rainfall from tropical storm Isaias, last year Tatamy got 5 inches in less than 12 hours from that storm...Luckily the weather cooperated for Moore Township’s Community Days. I went Friday night to check it out, we enjoyed some food and beer and listened to some tunes by The Groove. Looks like they had a decent turnout, it’s always nice to see all the people showing up to support the community...Before we know it the Northampton Street Fair will be here, Saturday, Sept. 11. The Home News is gonna have a table set up so if you’re in the area stop by. We’ll have some old, old newspapers if you’d like to take a gander...Northampton School Board just voted unanimously to require masks during school. Nazareth had voted to go mask-optional but I’m wondering if that’ll change at their next meeting, I guess we’ll find out...This Sunday there’s gonna be a fundraiser at the Rita’s in Walnutport and Northampton. From 6 to 9 p.m., proceeds will go towards “Peter Klingman’s Warriors Hope Love Fight.” Not that you need another reason to enjoy some Rita’s, but if you do, it’ll go towards a good cause...I heard there was a bad accident in the Bath borough on Monday morning, I wasn’t able to find out too much info other
than that, I’ll have to keep an eye out for the police report. I saw someone vandalized some playground equipment in Bath over on Green Street. What’s wrong with people? Do they have nothing better to do with their time than destroy property, property that actually benefits members of the community? I don’t get it. Anywho, the borough passed their MS4 inspection. The MS4 is the storm sewer system. They recommend doing the following easy steps to help out: Clearing litter from curbs/sidewalks and ensuring contaminated water (pool water, oil pans, etc) doesn't flow onto sidewalks and streets. All gutters and storm drains in the Borough deposit directly into the Monocacy Creek. That reminds me, I think there’s gonna be another creek clean-up soon... Alright I gotta wrap things up here, cya next time!

"Buyers are still interested and want to own a home, but recordhigh home prices and the lack of solid choices are causing some to retreat," said 2021 GLVR President Tim Tepes. Tepes added that he's seen firsthand – a situation partially caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic – a pressured rush to

purchase a property to accommodate a new housing or location preference. "Add to that the pressures of an already-established intensely hot seller's market – which has been forcing many to waive contingencies and push their budget to the maximum to have a shot at winning a bidding war – and even the most well-qualified clients can start to get cold feet or feel pangs of regret after a closing," Tepes said. "Now that life is opening up again, and that rushed pressure is falling away, some buyers could be having doubts." To help a buyer – or a seller – sort through moments of questioning a decision, both Porembo and Tepes suggest working with a REALTOR®. Northampton Borough Council Discusses Canal Street Park update By CHRISTINA SANTO The Northampton Borough Council met on Thursday, August 19 to update residents on the Canal Street Park situation. The Canal Street Park, excluding the trail, athletic courts, and parking lots, was closed at the August 5 council meeting after numerous residents raised complaints about the noise and mess created by out-of-town picnickers. Councilman Tony Pristash reported that residents are enjoying the trail more, as it is a more peaceful environment now. As for future plans, the borough will be working with a veteran horticulturist to help beautify the area after another community took the offer set forth by the Lehigh Valley Rose Society. Solidified plans should be presented to council sometime in 2022. Potential ideas for the area include a monarch waystation and an additional pavilion. In other business, council welcomed Brian Sabo back as the Change on Main’s program director. Sabo previously worked in this position from July 2018 to June 2020, but stepped down to open a new recovery center in Bethlehem. He and a group of volunteers will be cleaning up Canal Street Park on September 10, just in time for the Uptown Street Fair the following day. Sabo worked closely with LeRoy Brobst and Judy Kutzler in the past to improve the borough, and plans to continue doing so. He also plans to work with police chief Bryan Kadingo on the police assisting recovery program.

Council approved Wheels on the Canal to hold their annual car show on May 21, 2022 with rain date for May 22. Proceeds of the event are split between the Blue Star Mothers of America and Mission 22. Also, council appointed Jeffrey Odenwelder to the vacant planning commission seat; he would fill Robert McHale’s unexpired term, which ends on Dec. 31, 2023. Brobst, borough manager, stated that the borough will be having a joint meeting with Allen Township and a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection representative on August 25 to discuss their Act 537 plans. The Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act, or Act 537, is meant to “help address existing sewage disposal needs, and to help prevent future problems through the proper planning, permitting, and design of all types of sewage facilities,” according to the DEP’s website. The Northampton Borough Council will meet again on Thursday, September 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the municipal building on Laubach Avenue.

website. Once the plans are accepted, the township will have 90 days to review the plan and determine if it meets township zoning, subdivision, and land ordinances. The warehouse sketch plan was originally presented at the June 28 planning commission meeting, where it was met with fierce opposition. Residents cited a multitude of reasons for their opposition including increased traffic and pollution, which would disrupt the rural community and natural environment in the township. Because of this, township residents pushed for a stricter warehouse ordinance. Township Solicitor David Backenstoe drafted an ordinance that changes warehouses from a by-right permitted use to a conditional use, and requires increased berms and buffers, truck driver lounges, and off-street loading/parking. The ordinance was reviewed by both the planning commission and board of supervisors; it will be voted on by the board at their September 9 meeting. Also discussed at the meeting were two special exception plans. The first plan pertains to 501 Monocacy Dr. The applicants plan to use the property for a septic business, rather than the trucking operation that used to be run there. Backenstoe explained that the current use of the property is a lawful, non-conforming use; this means that the use was there before zoning went into place. Township ordinances allow non-conforming uses to be changed to other nonconforming uses, as long as it is no more detrimental to the public. The second special exception plan relates to 1096 Smith Gap Rd. Residents wish to replace an old mobile home with a

by these requirements may be sent home. Cases, said Superintendent Joseph S. Kovalchik, are rising in Northampton, with five cases reported in the school district in the past seven days. These cases have the potential to spread, not only among students, but among faculty, staff, grandparents, and other family members. This spread is already starting to occur, he told the audience. Requiring masks, he continued, will help stop the community spread and prevent the school from shutting down completely. For students who so choose or may be quarantined, e-learning will be available. Teachers will livestream their instruction during the day. 120 students are already enrolled in e-learning. The board told parents that they did not take this decision lightly, studying the data of local health experts, watching case numbers in Northampton County, and listening to state guidelines. They also followed the lead of neighboring school districts, they said, most of which have passed similar requirements. “We are here to help our students achieve an education,” said Board President David Gogel. “We do not want to chance children getting COVID if we can help it.” The most vocal members of the audience were parents against masks for their children. While some voiced that the choice should be left up to the parents, others voiced skepticism regarding the data behind mask and vaccine safety. Jerry Bretzik of Moore Township wanted to see data from the school board on COVID morbidities. “You say masks are going to save our kids? Are you kidding me?” he said. “[A mask] is a diaper. That’s all it is...a dirty, stinky diaper.” “How many children have died of this?” he continued, telling the board that their data on the pandemic is wrong. “Enough,” one woman in the audience said from behind a mask. According to data from the CDC as of August 14, 430 children under 18 have died of COVID-19. “How about an aunt, or a brother, or a sister, or a mother, or a father...if they pass away...what do you say to that?” countered Chuck Frantz, vice president of the board. Research has indicated that 25% of children infected with COVID-19 will spread it to others. Bretzik was subsequently removed from the meeting following a later outburst in which he shouted profanities and claimed that the pandemic was caused by
immigration. One mother worried about the long-term effects of maskwearing. “Do we have any idea what this is going to do to our children ten years from now?” she asked
“How do we know in ten years we may not be hearing that your child wore a face mask…[and] this may have happened to their lungs?” Continued on page 10

“It’s not my job to protect everybody else,” she continued. “I don’t say that to sound selfish... My job is to protect my daughter.” Tara Burger, an oncologist nurse from Bath, asked the board to think about the decisions they are going to make. “I don’t know where the transparency is now… think of these kids.” While those against masks in school were the most vocal, there were several in the audience in favor of requiring masks in school Chris Vogel of Moore Township, who was wearing a mask to the meeting, was in favor of masks. “I am in support of anything to keep in-person instruction alive and well in our school district.” In the end, the school board unanimously voted to require masks in school, to the disappointment of some members of the outspoken audience. “I know we have had some heated discussions here tonight,” said board member James Chuss, “[but]...[COVID] does scare me. I am sorry. I see it firsthand.” Chuss owns and operates a disinfectant business that has cleaned numerous buildings where outbreaks have occurred during the pandemic. “Politics has no place here,” he continued. “I don’t know who is Democratic and who is Republican on this school board... it doesn’t matter...we are all here for one thing...the good of the students.”

I have given much thought to how I would write this article. No matter which way I go, I can see that should my wife find out, a week or so sleeping on the couch is in store for me. With that said, let’s have at it! What happened to my wife is nothing new for any of us. It is the timeless tale of a family going on a beach vacation wherein the drive, the beds, the activities, and furniture falls far short of what a middle-aged body requires. We all know that the combination of these factors, along with others, can lead to an ache, a pain, additional stiffness, or a slew of other ailments. By golly it did! I can share that our family vacation was wonderful until the night before we were to sojourn home and my wife simply bent over to pick up a towel. That seemingly innocuous, routine event of everyday living actually threw her back out big time. Candidly I thought she was pretending, as packing everything to go home is never fun. She wasn’t. As you might expect I am typically prepared well for such events whether for me, my family or even people we meet along the way. I broke out my electrical stim unit, my portable ultrasound device, my instant ice packs, biofreeze, hand-held massager, and of course my hands, and went to work. As with many acute events, the cascade of inflammatory events is similar to storm water in a creek rising, eventually cresting and once again settling down, all the while dealing with the aftermath. The long ride home was not pleasant for my wife or the family. Accommodations for travel had to be made and altered all along the way. I did make a recommenda-

tion that she be hoisted and tied to the roof so she could lie down. Alas my professional advice was not heeded. (Just for the record if anyone is traveling along I-95 just over the border into Virginia, they have a wonderful rest area picnic bench that works very well as a chiropractic table, albeit not as sterile as I would have liked!) Now as I write this week’s article, my wife is responding to care rendered, chiropractic adjusting, gentle stretching and exercise, and the return to normal ergonomic surroundings. All appropriate and leading to the beneficial results we all so desire. However, make no mistake, as everything I did, we try to restore and maintain our health, we must rely on our Godgiven innate healing ability that resides within each of us. Without this absolutely nothing anyone could offer would make a difference. Healing is an inside job. You see from your first heartbeat to the last, your innate healing systems are continually working as hard as they can to keep you feeling and functioning as best able given each of our unique situations. Please consider this very day what you could do to assist “yourself ” in helping and healing “yourself.” My best to you.
