Judith Haldeman, a lifelong resident of Northampton’s First Ward, was nominated by Northampton Borough Council to fill the empty seat of late Councilman Keith Piescienski. Haldeman was among three interested candidates who spoke before council and the public on December 2. Haldeman worked for Northampton County for nearly 40 years in several HR roles. She retired this year. Now, she says, “I am looking to reinvent myself in some ways.” She is also a recently appointed member of the borough’s water authority. “We live in a town that is a great place to live,” she said. She wants to show off all that makes the borough special, from its small businesses to its trails, and ensure the borough is kept safe. Haldeman was nominated in a 5-3 vote. The other two council applicants included Barry Frantz and Sandra Pudliner. Frantz has lived in Northampton for 21 years and currently works as an area transportation manager for True Value Hardware. He is a safety officer in the Northampton Fire Department, having previously served as a first-responder in East Allen Township. Pudliner is also a resident who was born and raised in the borough. She previously worked as a zoning officer in Hanover Township. She talked of bringing some of the township’s successful policies to Northampton. All three candidates, said Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski, Sr., were “worthy of a seat.” “It is unfortunate at this time that we only had one,” he added. Mayor Thomas Reenock was absent from the December 2 meeting and unable to swear in Haldeman. She will be sworn into her seat before the next

This is the first time the County has cut real estate property taxes since the 2000 budget which included a drop of 0.1 in the millage rate. “I want to thank Council for their vote tonight,” says Lamont McClure. “Northampton County is in the top ten of counties with the highest property tax burden in the Commonwealth and our resi-

room, which contained a large amount of empty, unused vape cartridges; 15 plastic vacuumsealed bags containing a large amount of marijuana and 35 small baggies containing marijuana; several containers with a large amount of packaging materials and a digital scale; and a package addressed to Justin Hutson containing a large amount of more plastic packaging baggies. Officers located a large amount of USPS shipping labels inside one of the containers, and several glass jars containing a yellow/green thick liquid. Various other pieces of paraphernalia and vape accessories were found, including an electric burner with oil residue. Several pieces of greenhouse equipment were also located including fans, exhaust systems, and lights. In the adjacent room, identified as Hutson’s bedroom, police found a ziplock bag containing marijuana, and six firearms. Hutson’s wife provided police the key to the safe in which the firearms were located, which was located on Hutson’s car key ring. The firearms included three shotguns, an AR-15 pistol “ghost gun,” an unknown caliber pistol “ghost gun,” and a .380 Spectrum. All firearms,

except one which was registered to Hutson’s wife, had either no registered owner or no serial number. In the basement, police found additional paraphernalia on a shelf and a large amount of vape cartridges filled with a yellow/ green liquid in a freezer. More paraphernalia was found in the garage. Through investigation, police verified Hutson’s identity and discovered he had previous convictions in 2012 of felony burglary and felony theft. Those convictions classify Hutson as a person not to possess a firearm. “Colonial Regional Police acted quickly in investigating and arresting in this case. Not only did they discover a drug selling operation, but untraceable guns were recovered that, if put in circulation, could have had disastrous results. Excellent work,” said District Attorney Houck. Hutson was arraigned Monday morning and bail was set at $150,000. Hutson is currently in Northampton County Prison, with a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled for December 20. As in every criminal case, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Bath Borough Council Addresses Speeding Concerns and Subdivision Plans
By LAUREN SCHUSTER The Bath Borough Council met on Monday, December 6 to review old and new business. Among old business to revisit, council addressed methods of monitoring traffic to curtail speeding as well as area parking enforcement. Mayor Fiorella Mirabito addressed the success of the annual Christmas tree lighting on Sunday, November 28. The tree lighting was attended by over 200 members of the Bath community. Mirabito also acknowledged Carol Bear-Heckman and Tony Kovalovsky for their service to the borough as both will be concluding their time on Bath Borough Council. In new business, council discussed the Bathwick Hills apartment development, which is in planning stages, to be erected at 303 W. Main St. The complex would house four apartment buildings, with anywhere between 72-84 individual apartments in total. A representative for the
Bathwick development presented the current plans to council, addressing concerns regarding the intended driveway for the development and the ability to satisfy zoning ordinances. Current plans

may also download our Winter Driving Guide. Carry a winter emergency travel kit. Listen to weather and travel advisories, but if you don't have to travel in bad weather, don't. Keep your gas tank at least half full. Slow down and increase following distance. Avoid sudden stops and starts. Beware of roads that may look wet, but are actually frozen, often referred to as "black ice." Use extra caution on bridges and ramps, where ice can often form without warning. Carry a cellphone. Do not use cruise control while driving on snow-covered roads. State law requires you to turn on your headlights when your wipers are on. Use your low beams in particularly bad weather, especially in cases of heavy or blowing snow. Remove ice and snow from windows, mirrors, and all vehicle lights before you drive and as often as needed. Remove snow and ice from the hood and roof of your vehicle. State law states that if snow or ice from your vehicle strikes a vehicle or person and causes death or injury, you can be ticketed. Do not park or abandon your vehicle on snow emergency routes. Do not pass or get between trucks plowing in a plow line (several trucks plowing side by side). Make sure someone else knows where you are going and when you expect to arrive. In case you run into an emergency and need help, someone will know where to look for you. If you do become stranded, it's better to stay with your vehicle until help arrives. Run the engine every hour or so, but make sure the tailpipe is clear and keep the downwind window cracked open. Do not drink and drive, and always wear your seat belt. Preparation is also key to successfully navigating winter roads. Winter weather can bring unexpected conditions, so make sure that both you and your vehicle are ready for ice and snow.

Descendants of Jane Horner visit Horner’s Cemetery do. As with most visitors from out of state, they are going to see the Liberty Bell while they are here. This author was just as excited to meet them. They were the first descendants of Jane Horner to visit here in the last 13 years,
when the restoration started. After visiting here, they planned to visit other family graves and historic homesteads on their list. Unfortunately Jane Horner’s house burned down years back. But they did not go home
empty-handed. This author gave them copies of the Jane Horner homestead photo before it burned down. Due to the weather, Horner’s Cemetery tours are now closed. I cannot think of a better way to end the season than a visit by descendants of Jane Horner, for whom the cemetery is named.

Off and on, over the years, Horner’s Cemetery has had visitors for certain notable persons and visitors from other states and countries. This year we ended our tours with a group of guests from CA and MD at the same time. After five years in the making, they arrived here as a group after meeting in Philadelphia. As some readers may already know, Horner’s Cemetery was named after Jane Horner who was the first woman killed in Northampton County (1763). Jane Horner was born in Berry County, Ireland. She was the wife of James Horner. They came to America in 1734. Their children were: Hugh, John, Thomas, Sarah, Mary, James, and Jane. Cindi (Lawrence) Anderson, of southern CA, said Jane Horner was her fifth great grandmother through her mother’s side. Lisa (Miller) Beckstead, of northern CA, said Jane Horner was her fourth great grandmother through her father’s side. Even though both ladies are the same age, they are cousins once removed due to Lisa’s late birth. Dan of Maryland wrote that he was related to Jane Horner and was a cousin to both ladies. They were asked how they knew Jane’s story, who told them, how old were they, and who researched their family tree. Lisa said her father told her about Jane Horner when she was a child. He referenced the cemetery a lot, so it is a good bet that descendants may have visited Horner’s Cemetery in the past. She added information to her father’s records with more current generations. Cindi said it was only through Lisa and the family tree her father made that she became aware of Jane Horner’s story. Dan said he first heard about Jane Horner from his father when he was about 8 years old. He said he received an email from Lisa. After talking a little bit, they found they were cous-
ins. They were so excited about visiting Jane’s grave, it was the very first thing they wanted to

council meeting. “I hope this is something that you’re ready for,” said Lopsonzski, Sr., “because the job is ready for you.” In other news, part-time police officer Michael Renner has retired from the force. This leaves the police department with five part-time officers. Chief Bryan Kadingo said the department needs part-time and full-time officers. A civil service test is being administered on December 11 for individuals who previously applied. Also during the meeting, council praised the borough for a successful tree lighting ceremony. The tree on Main Street was lit on November 28. It was donated by Joseph and Carol Nederostek and lit by their grandchildren Alex, Ben, and Sylvia. “I really had a great time there,” borough manager LeRoy Brobst said of the event. “Seeing the children with Santa…was worth the journey.” Residents of Northampton have another chance to get in the holiday spirit with the fire department’s annual Santa Run. Gifts for Santa can be delivered to the fire department from 6 to 8 p.m. on December 8, 9, and 10. Santa will deliver the gifts on December 11. The next council meeting will be on December 16.

on weekdays, and $12 on weekends and holidays; the rate for juniors (ages four to 17) is $8 on weekdays, and $9 on weekends and holidays. Senior citizens above 62 will have a rate of $7 on weekdays and $9 on weekends and holidays. Finally, children under four are free. Pool pass rates for a family of four cost $250 with additional members costing a further $15; proof of family affiliation is required, but residency is not. Senior adult passes for those between 18 and 61 cost $175, and junior passes (ages five to 17) are $150. Passes for those above 62 cost $125. In other business, the borough honored and thanked Nazareth Borough Food Bank president Jim Byrnes for his years of dedicated volunteer service. Council also approved the purchase of a few needed items. One of those was a 2021 Dodge Charger Pursuit police sedan; this vehicle will replace the force’s 2013 Ford Interceptor that was totaled in a recent accident. Other approved purchases include two computer firewalls, two PCs for the police squad room, and two enclosed bulletin boards for council chambers and the bor-
ough government center at 134 South Main Street. The bulletin boards will be used to post agendas, meeting schedules, and other announcements. Finally, two residents spoke about the Nazareth Borough Municipal Water Authority’s recent purchase of the Hower Road farm. The water authority purchased the 82-acre farm for $850,000 on Nov. 1 and plans to spread biosolids on the farms. These residents are concerned about the biosolids decreasing their property value, running off onto their property as a result of heavy rain, affecting their physical health, and creating a bad smell, among other items. Both councilman Christopher Crook and council president Daniel Chivialroli appreciated the residents’ concerns, but stated the water authority is a separate entity they have no control over. Charles Donello, councilman and liaison to the authority, will pass along the concerns either way. The Nazareth Borough Council will meet next on Monday, Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. in council chambers, at S. Church and Center Streets.

Freeman Announces $3.5 Million awarded For new parking Facility
Submitted by TOM ANDREWS A $3.5 million state grant will be used toward building a new 245-space parking facility at the site of The Confluence project in Easton, announced state Rep. Robert Freeman. The city of Easton was the grantee for the project. The project will construct a 245-space parking facility for visitors and residents on a current vacant city lot at 185 S. Third St. In addition, a pedestrian bridge will connect people with the Easton Transportation Center garage. “This new parking facility will
be a welcome addition in downtown Easton,” said Freeman, DNorthampton. “I’m pleased to have played a part in helping the city to acquire the funding for this important investment.” In addition, Freeman noted that $500,000 was approved for Wilson Borough to renovate Meuser Pool and $500,000 was approved for Heritage Riverview to continue renovating the old Heritage Lanes bowling alley for office space in Easton. The money was provided through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, a commonwealth matching grant program administered by the governor’s Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects. RACP projects are authorized in the Redevelopment Assistance section of a Capital Budget Itemization Act, have a regional or multi-jurisdictional impact, and generate substantial increases or maintain current levels of employment, tax revenue or other measures of economic activity. The projects cannot obtain primary funding under other state programs.

3 stalks celery, diced 2 medium carrots, diced 6 cloves garlic, minced 2 bay leaves 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric 2 teaspoons adobo seasoning 1 heaping tablespoon Mrs. Dash's Original Seasoning (salt-free) 1 teaspoon dried thyme 8 cups low sodium chicken broth (plus more) 6 ounces egg noodles 2 cups shredded cooked chicken 1 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 cup chopped parsley Instructions Heat the olive oil in a large dutch oven or stockpot over medium-high heat. Add onions and sauté for 3 minutes or until they soften. Add the carrots and celery and continue to cook and stir for another 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and let cook for 30 seconds before seasoning with the bay leaves, turmeric, adobo seasoning, Mrs. Dash's, and dried thyme. Pour in the chicken broth and let the soup reach a simmer. When the soup is simmering, lower the heat to medium and add in the egg noodles. Cook the noodles for 2 minutes less than the package directions. You want them to be al-dente. Stir in the chicken and let it
heat all the way through. You can add a little more broth or water at this time if you prefer your soup soupier. Turn the heat off, discard the bay leaves. Stir in the lemon zest, lemon juice, and parsley. Taste the soup and adjust salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm.

me, there’s still time to donate to Toys for Tots at Klecknersville Rangers. Justin Walker will be there this Sunday yet, Dec. 12 to collect toys, stop on by and visit the big FedEx trailer… I’m kicking myself,
we missed Monday evening’s Northampton School Board meeting. Did I miss something, did they change the Mondays that the meetings are on in December? Anywho, sorry folks, no article for that this time, hopefully we get the next one…Earlier in the week Northampton County DA Terry Houck announced that last month’s bus crash on
Bushkill Drive in Easton happened because the bus driver had been briefly distracted. Houck said that there will be no criminal charges and no summary traffic violations against the driver, who was injured in the wreck… Welp I gotta hit the road and end things here, gotta get some Christmas shopping done. Cya next time!
