Northampton Borough Council hires New police Officer By CHRISTINA SANTO
The Northampton Borough Council met on January 20 to swear in a new police officer and discuss sewer EDUs. Council unanimously approved a motion to hire Evan Meddler as a part-time police officer. Meddler was sworn in at the meeting. Before he can officially start working, he has an 8-week MPOETC training to complete. Councilman Anthony Lopsonski Sr. suggested he walk the parking meters and get to know the people and businesses in town. In other business, Tim Tepes was present to ask for an update on the intermunicipal sewer agreement with Allen Township; Tepes needs 68 to 70 equivalent dwelling units (EDUs) to complete his project. Tim Livengood, Towpath Estates developer, recently completed an agreement with the township for 50 EDUs, while Tepes says his family’s development began back in the 1960s and is still on hold. Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst explained that the borough is in the midst of creating a joint Act 537 with the township, and that they are working on a resolution to the sewer EDUs. Council passed a motion to advertise Ordinance 1220. The ordinance proposes mandating a right-turn only for eastbound traffic at the intersection of Station Alley and Main Street; it will be voted on at the next council meeting. Many council members commended the public works department, fire department, and sewer authority employees for their continued hard work. The public works and fire departments have been greatly affected by COVID, but have continued to “hold the ship together,” in the words of councilman Ron Glassic. Council also commended the job public

The Great Horned Owl, taken January 6 by Carl J. Fischer, Jr. of Nazareth.
This photo is of a Great Horned Owl, also known as the Tiger Owl or the Hoot Owl, a large owl native to North and South America. Mr. and Mrs. Fischer spotted the owl on a hike in Bushkill Township; the owl was flying through the trees and landed in a tree nearby. This photo was captured using a 600mm
lens. The owl allowed the Fischers to watch it for about 10 minutes and then flew off. These owls are not only beautiful, they are also huge; they’re estimated to be about 30% larger than a Red-tailed Hawk. Great Horned Owls are considered very aggressive and are one of the most common owls in North America.
works did clearing the wintry mix from borough streets. Sewer authority employees recently fixed a water main break on Newport Avenue, and were beginning to repair the road when another main broke nearby. These employees worked tirelessly to fix both breaks, and returned to work the next morning. Finally, Brobst gave a brief overview of the Cementon
Bridge project. Bids will open in July, and they will break ground in August. The whole process, includContinued on page 7

The exhibition explores surveying techniques, the conflicts between indigenous communities and Europeans, and the Moravian contributions to surveying, early cartography, and town planning. Moravians began surveying Pennsylvania in the early 1740s and their contributions to the surveying of Pennsylvania offers some of the earliest documentation of land use in the colonies during tumultuous times of war and unrest. Pennsylvania’s geography played a major role in shaping America’s history as European settlers expanded west, drawn by the promise of fertile farmlands and the prospect of untold riches. An opening reception for the exhibition will take place on

Everything gets a rusty color. “Thanksgiving dinner was not bad. We are allowed six cans of beer every eight days and three cartons of cigarettes a month. The unit laid pipelines and built refrigerators for blood plasma, which is needed at the front lines. They even built a washing machine. “I see things every day I cannot write about. Something happened on Christmas evening that I never expected to happen. Our CO went haywire. He is now in the hospital at the pres-

Some of the Navy men fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the waters near the Philippine island of Leyte, considered the largest naval battle of World War II.” Pvt. Ruch writes, “Lots of things are happening that you would not understand if I wrote about it in this letter. We have so much rain, we use chains for slick, muddy roads like we do at home for ice. Raincoats mean nothing. “On May 14, I was personally shocked with the news that a very personal friend, Wilmer C. Saylor, was killed on April 6. Brian Rehrig
Brian Houser Rehrig, age 67, passed away the morning of Jan. 21, 2022, at home after a long illness. He spent his last days surrounded by loved ones; listening to Bach, showtunes, and James Taylor; and wearing tee shirts from political campaigns: in other words, as he lived. Brian was born Oct. 24, 1954 to Marjorie and Carl Rehrig and grew up in Bath, Pa., attending Northampton High School. He went on to MIT, where he intended to major in Mechanical Engineering in pursuit of a career building pipe organs, but graduated with a BS in Economics in 1975. He was involved with MIT’s Glee Club, Drama Guild, and newspaper The Tech. It is in Boston that he met Sheila (Duffy) Rehrig, his beloved wife of 45 years, through the city’s musical theatre scene. He spent a 37-year career in investment and commercial property management for a family office, Renco Management. As part of this role, Brian’s true professional passion was his position as Executive Director of the Fields Pond Foundation, a grantmaker focused on land and river conservation. This allowed for his favorite professional perk: taking “business hikes.” Brian loved nature, and protecting open spaces for recreational use. His favorite spots included the White Mountains, especially Franconia Ridge. He was a founding board member of the Arlington Land Trust, acting as Treasurer for over 20 years. He was particularly proud of his work on the Campaign to Protect Elizabeth Island, and the ongoing efforts to preserve open space and wetlands at the Mugar property in Arlington. In 2021 he was appointed as an inaugural member of the Massachusetts Land Trust Coalition’s Conservation Advisory Council, a group of leaders in land protection issues in the state. He loved music and theatre: Brian was a gifted pianist and an accomplished music director and sound designer for community theaters across the region. He was particularly involved with Arlington Friends of the Drama, where he served as

the investment committee chair for 25 years, was sound chair, and volunteered in countless other ways. In recognition of his contributions, in 2008 he was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the organization. He had a warm baritone voice and participated in the Berkshire Choral Festival for several years. Brian was deeply committed to his local community in Arlington, serving as an elected Town Meeting Member for over thirty years, as Vice Chair of The Symmes Advisory Committee, as Vice Chair of the Capital Planning Committee, and on the Arlington High School Building Committee. He played a key role in many local and state political campaigns, inspiring and encouraging candidates to run for office. He was sought after for his unwavering support and his expertise at understanding and managing campaign data. Brian leaves behind countless friends and a family that will love him forever, including mother Marjorie; wife Sheila; daughter Jenna and her partner Adric Giles; and son Matthew, daughter-in-law Anna Bishop Rehrig, and granddaughters Elise and Nina. He is preceded in death by his father Carl. A memorial ceremony celebrating Brian’s life will be scheduled for Spring 2022. Interment will be private. Moore Planning Commission Reorganizes, reviews plans By CHRISTINA SANTO The Moore Township Planning Commission met on January 24 at 7 p.m. to reorganize and review plans in various stages of development. New members Max Bauer and John Wetzel were welcomed to the planning commission. Following this, a motion nominating John Becker to the chairman position was passed unanimously. Richard Gable and Jason Harhart were voted to the vice chairman and secretary positions, respectively. In other business, Becker reported the Muschlitz Excavating land development plan will be reviewed at a special meeting on March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Klecknersville Rangers Fire Station. The Water’s Edge land development plan was tabled and received an extension until
April 30. The planning commission granted approval (with conditions from Keystone) for Thomas DeLong’s lot line adjustment; the plan will be reviewed at the next supervisors’ meeting. A minor subdivision plan for Jason Kocher was also discussed. The subdivision plan proposes to split 1.5 acres off of a lot that is around eight acres currently. The applicant questioned if the conditions put forward by Keystone Engineering would have to be completed on the entire eight acres, or only the smaller parcel. He also questioned the payment of the township’s $2,000 recreation fee. Kocher’s minor subdivision plan was extended until June 30. Finally, the planning commission heard a sketch plan presen-

Ages: 12-18. Registration is required. The Henrys of Boulton (and Elsewhere) Saturday, February 12 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The Henrys at Boulton loved to research their family history. They relied on a vast trove of family papers and tended to fill in the blanks with interesting stories, which later historians have repeated as fact. Twenty-first century research has uncovered, however, lots of new material that just wasn't available to these nineteenth-century historians. This new material reveals that the Henry family history is even more interesting than the Henrys themselves may have realized. Join Dr. Scott Paul Gordon for this presentation of his research into the Henry family. Registration is required. Advanced Watershed Education ChemistryOnly Teacher Workshop Saturday, February 19 from 9 a.m. to noon Watershed Education (WE) is an inquiry-based, interdisciplinary curriculum that is geared for students in grades 6-12. Developed by the DCNR Bureau of State Parks, WE helps educators utilize local natural resources as a valuable teaching tool. This workshop will specifically focus on the chemical water quality sampling component of the curriculum. Teachers who are already familiar with educating about watersheds and water quality issues will benefit from this advanced workshop that will provide resources on how to teach chemical concepts, how to maintain water quality testing equipment, and how to manage a chemistry lab outdoors. Educators attending this workshop will receive the chemistry portion of the Bureau of State Parks award-winning Watershed Education curriculum and their own water quality test kit. Cost is $10 payable at the workshop with cash or check made payable to the "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” Participants will receive three hours of Act 48 credit.

This year marks 25 years for this community science program that collects data on winter birds by asking people to identify birds over a 15-minute time period and submit their results. Your data will be part of this global initiative. Tips on bird identification will be included. Guest Speaker: The “chick-a-dee” Call and Hybridization Friday, February 25 from 7 to 8 p.m. We see many chickadees visit our feeders at the center, namely the Black-Capped Chickadee and the Carolina Chickadee. Many people are not aware that Jacobsburg is within the “hybrid zone,” a geographic range where two species live and interbreed, producing hybrids. Guest speaker, Joan Spinelli, a doctoral student from Lehigh University will talk about her research on how the hybridization affects individual and flocking vocalizations. This is one you don’t want to miss out on. Registration is required. History of Henry's Woods Hike Saturday, February 26 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. to noon Start your journey back in time at the Boulton Historic Site where you will catch a shuttle to Jacobsburg’s visitor center for a walk through Henry's Woods. Our educators will stop along the way to interpret the historic sites that made the woods a hub of activity and industry in the late 1800s. See what remains of the former camp, icehouse, gun factory, and mill pond. Our walk will return you to your cars at the Boulton Historic Site where you can enjoy refreshments. This walk is one mile long on moderate terrain. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Registration is required. One Year on the Head of a Deer Saturday, February 26 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Antlers have been marveled by mankind for millennia. This program will take a deeper look into Pennsylvania’s state mammal, the white-tailed deer, and focus on the phenomenon of antler formation and regeneration. February is the perfect time for this talk because it’s when whitetails restart their annual cycle of growing new antlers. We will discuss how this cycle perfectly coincides with a deer’s life history and how they use these freshly grown organs to help them better survive. After the talk we will do an indoor activity comparing different types of antlers. This program is best for teens and adults; although, children are welcome. Registration is required.
