Tri-Boro Sportsmen Club causing Safety concerns For residents

and cleaning up afterwards. It was the thought of providing an environment for stress-free fun where parents and children could enjoy their time together learning something new that inspired her. Encouraged by her friends, family and loyal customers, Tera took the leap into the public eye and hasn't looked back. "I pulled the things I loved out of the things I love to do!" said the cake maestro enthusiastically. She calls her confectionery a "DIY cake decorating studio." Participants can choose from three flavors for their cakes/ cupcakes: vanilla, chocolate or funfetti and from there, the possibilities are endless. There is an entire wall dedicated to toppings and adornments. Sprinkles, candy, edible spray paint, Saturday morning cereal favorites, along with fondant and accompanying

By KERI LINDENMUTH Some residents living near Northampton’s Tri-Boro Sportsmen Club expressed concerns about safety during Northampton’s September 5 council meeting. Recently, bullets have been found in the siding of nearby homes and rapid firing can be heard. Northampton District Attorney John Morganelli has sent detectives to investigate. Residents asked why the borough has not established any ordinances or regulations regarding the organization. They cited nearby gun ranges, which require sign-in logs, gun records, cameras, and gate access. Camp Cake: A Sweet Escape By DAWN DUDECK TUNNEY If you're looking for a new experience and something creative to do in the growing genre of instructor led DIY and have a sweet tooth, Camp Cake is your next destination. Nestled amongst the dark brick storefronts on Main Street in Nazareth is the answer to all things sweet and playful where messes are not only expected but encouraged and the only requirement to participate is your imagination. Camp Cake is the brainchild of first-time business owner Tera Burnett. After years of successfully baking cakes for private customers, Tera saw a need for something different in the "event horizon." A mom and grandmother several times over, she knew that everyone loved decorating cakes, but what they didn't love was all the preparation time

The year is 2001; I’m over on Penn Street in Bath with Mr. George Maureka, a former Penn Dixie employee, who is sharing his memories of the Great Depression. His son, also named George, was an outstanding student of mine at Northampton High School. The family resided in a company home. The home had running water but they needed the kitchen stove to heat the water. The only heat was provided by a kitchen stove, which was located in what is the present basement of the home. Mr. Maureka recalled, “After school we chopped wood for our winter supply. In the winter we sat around the stove until bedtime and

then ran up the stairs and covered with a feather tick. In the morning we rushed down to warm up next to the stove.” He pointed to the back yard and said, “It was dug up by hand and converted into a beautiful garden. My father was always gardening, raising potatoes, cabbage, celery, beans and everything you could imagine. We had a stable for rabContinued on page 2

Submitted by JESSICA O’DONNELL Attention Lehigh Valley foodies: It’s time to start working up an appetite. The first ever Nazareth Area Restaurant Week is happening right now. The event started on Sunday, September 8 and will continue through Saturday, September 14. This weeklong event is designed to attract residents and visitors to the area to discover all of the unique eateries the Nazareth community has to offer. Participating Nazareth Area Restaurant Week locations offer “setprice” or “prix fixe” breakfast, lunch and dinner options designed to satisfy a wide spectrum of palates and budgets. Diners can expect a variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts at promotional prices. There are dinein options and takeout specials too. Fifteen eateries have signed on for the event, presented by the Nazareth Business Council. Those that are participating: The Chicken Corner, Birthright Brewing Co., Rios Brazilian Steakhouse, Zanette’s Nazareth Grill, Mad J’s BBQ, Slate Quarry Hotel, Sweets N Savories, The Green Stop, The Cherry Hill Hotel, Miguel’s Restaurant & Lounge, Bella Napoli Trattoria, Naz-O-Nut, Rita’s of Nazareth, SubStation and Widow’s Tavern & Grille. When asked why Sweets N Savories owner John Huber felt it was important to participate in this event, he said, “The Nazareth area has been overlooked for too long as a place to get great food. It's time we let everyone know we have some wonderful establishments in the area and it's only going to get better. We are hoping that by getting our name out to a larger demographic area, people will realize there is a great bakery in the area that has both pastries and fresh breads.” Michael Woodland, Chair of the Nazareth Business Council mentioned, “The Nazareth area continues to have great new foodie options open. These locally owned businesses are offering more choices and expanding the draw for dining in our wonderful town. NBC's in-

augural restaurant week provides a great time to explore and enjoy the many participating venues. Please join me in supporting them!” Mary Moeller, Cluster Market Leader with the BB&T Nazareth branch offices, and a proud sponsor of this event said, “Restaurant Week is a great time to connect with your local community while generating buzz for local food scenes. It gives restaurants and eateries a chance to impress customers with their food and service, and the experience may persuade guests to come back and be repeat customers.” “The Nazareth Business Coun-

Bath View Condo residents Unhappy with transition process Submitted by KERI LINDENMUTH Residents of the Bath View Condominiums off Route 512 are unhappy with current development on the property. Phase 1 of the development has yet to be completed after a new developer came in to finish the project. However, the developer, Justin Huratiak, has begun Phase 2 of construction. “Phase 1 must be completed prior to development [of Phase 2],” representatives from the condo association said during the Borough of Bath council meeting on September 3. They said their development is flooded with construction vehicles blocking their parking spots and exits as the new condo units in Phase 2 begin construction. “We are just asking for what has been promised,” they said. “What will happen if the builder does not finish Phase 1?” Borough solicitor Jamie Kratz told residents that the borough has cash security from the developer in case improvements are not completed. Kratz also clarified the development contract. He said the developer has done “what was required” in order to begin construction on Phase 2. He only needs to finish Phase 1 before a certificate of occupancy can be granted for the new apartments in Phase 2. He explained that the residents of the condos bought into this situation when they bought into the development. “It is part of the risk,” he said. Residents also said that they are having issues with Huratiak. They said their access is blocked and road work is leaving them with flat tires. They asked for a site inspection. Residents said they feel taken advantage of and that the developer has “been given access to control the property for his own use.” Council appreciated residents bringing up the issues. “If it happens day after day… and no one tells us, we cannot do anything about it,” said Councilman Mark Saginario. Citations have been issued and council said the borough is “doing what it can do from a zoning side.” Kratz added that the borough will not release anything on an open investigation into the property. In other news, council voted to remove “No Parking” signs at unused rental spots in the borough’s public parking lot. “We need public parking,” said Councilman Frank Hesch. Signs will be erected as the spots are rented. Finally, Mayor Fiorella Mirabito announced that the borough’s neighborhood watch group is in

“serious need” of block captains. She asked residents to “step up to the plate” and work with State Police to put together a strong and engaging watch group for the borough.

NAZARETH AREA Nazareth Borough Council Passes animal Control motions

By DAWN DUDECK TUNNEY On Tuesday, September 3, Nazareth Borough Council passed two important motions concerning animal control in the Borough. The motions, proposed by Council woman Jessica Teel Sadler, address the feral cat issues of the Borough and a course of action for lost/found dogs.
The first was to hire No Nonsense Neutering of the Lehigh Valley to assist in regulating the feral cat population. For the past decade, No Nonsense, owned by Martha Kahan, has had immense success resolving feral cat problems in surrounding areas. The nonprofit organization spays/neuters the feral cats after humanely trapping them and returns the animals back to their original locations. In addition, the cats will be cleaned and dewormed and then eartipped which "marks" them as having already been caught and fixed. The motion agrees to pay No Nonsense $1,050 (the amount to process 30 cats) for their services which will cover the borough until the end of 2019. The council woman plans to request that this service be built into the yearly budget. Over the past four years, No Nonsense has treated over 300 cats in the 18064 zip code.

Vouchers will be available at the borough office and all residents must present their ID to receive them. There is a limit of five vouchers per person. Those who have caught feral cats can contact No Nonsense in Allentown for an appointment and bring in the animals where they will be taken care of at no charge to the residents. The council is also in the process of working on an ordinance to address feeding in coordination with the trap/neuter program. In the second motion passed, the Nazareth borough agreed to participate with the COGS (Council of Governments) Animal Control Officer program for lost canines through Pibbles Paws Safe Haven Dog Rescue of Bath.
The Council of Governments is a group of local municipalities that work together to provide support and resources to their neighboring communities. Currently, Nazareth does not have an Animal Control Officer or any procedures in place for dogs found in the borough, which can burden the town with the high costs of kenneling the animals and the responsibility of reuniting them with their owners or finding other arrangements. By partnering with COGS, Nazareth can now utilize the services of PPSH, where the animals will be housed and well cared for. Citizens that find lost dogs are to contact the Nazareth Police Department at 134 S. Main St. or on the non-emergency number: 610-759-2200.

No Nonsense Neutering of the Lehigh Valley has been an advocate for animal population control and has performed over 100,000 surgeries since opening in 2008. For more information on No Nonsense Neutering and the Trap, Neuter, Return Program (TNR), visit their website at nnnlv.org or call 866-820-2510 The clinic is located at 1044 N Quebec St, rear Allentown, PA 18109 .

Pibbles Paws Safe Haven is a state-licensed, nonprofit dog rescue that accepts all breeds. All dogs receive a full physical exam and temperament evaluation. PPSH also educates and assists new owners. The rescue is located at 545 Creek Road, Bath, PA 18014. For more information, please consult their Facebook page or pibblespaws.wixsite.com or 484-735-1431.

After Death - What?

“If a man die, shall he live again?” Job’s question voices the inquiry of men’s minds from the beginning of time. The question has been authoritatively answered by Christ--and in the affirmative--for Christ both died and arose again from the dead. Well over a thousand years ago, Christian missionaries landed on the shores of heathen England to bring the Good News to the idol-worshiping inhabitants. The king called a council to determine whether the missionaries should be heard. As the nobles sat in the dimly lighted hall discussing the matter, a lone bird flew in through an open window. Traversing the length of the room, it vanished through a doorway into the dark. “King,” remarked a noble, “you saw the bird just now? It came in we know not whence, and after a brief passage through the room, it went we cannot tell whither. It is so with us. We come for a short time into the world, we know not from where. Neither do we know where we are going. If the strangers know, let us hear them.” The Bible says, “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). The Good News is this--Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. Whoever believes in Jesus and accepts Him as Savior and Lord will “...not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). For the believer, death is but “...to depart, and be with Christ” (Phil. 1:23). But what is after death for the non-believer? The Bible says, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Heb. 9:27). Now is the time of God’s grace and mercy. “...Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Cor. 6:2). By accepting Jesus Christ you accept God’s mercy. Those who reject Him pay the penalty for their own sins, after death, in hell. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36). -Written by the late Pastor Daniel E. Lundmark

In preparation for becoming a small business owner, Tera took free classes at Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley in Bethlehem, PA. An "invaluable experience," she credits her early success and confidence to the knowledge gained there. After a triumphant grand opening on August 22, attended by many Nazareth council members, including Mayor Colondo, as well as representatives from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, Tera says she is grateful for all of their support and can't wait to see what adventures lie ahead for herself, the community and Camp Cake customers.

The space can seat 20 people and tickets are sold to reserve spots. Tera provides the cakes or cupcakes and bagged icing (all made by her, with love) and then leads the group on the magical journey of learning how to decorate a unicorn cake. There are unicorn horns to wear, games to play and music to be enjoyed with no restraints or guilt for spilt sprinkles

As of now, the entrepreneur has themed parties and open studio times where you can select a 6-inch cake ($20) or four cupcakes ($12) to adorn with three toppings from the Willie Wonka wall and learn some tips and tricks from the seasoned baker herself. Along with birthdays, Tera envisions all types of parties in the future: baby and bridal showers, bachelorette and divorce celebrations, "cocktails and cupcakes," and events to help support local charities and

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month

www.americanveterinarian.com The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM) honors Animal Pain Awareness Month every September, by providing both pet owners and veterinary professionals with information and resources. Animals suffer from pain like humans do, and just like in humans, chronic pain can be subtle and difficult to treat. Unfortunately, pets cannot tell their owners when something is wrong. This is why a yearly campaign aims to inform and empower animals, so that they don’t suffer from chronic pain in silence. Professionals are strongly encouraged to join the campaign and can visit IVAPM’s official website to learn how to incorporate pain

management into their practice. “During this annual campaign, IVAPM will encourage various organizations (clinics, veterinarians, technicians, veterinary industry, publications, and veterinary educators) to raise public awareness about pain and pain management as it pertains to veterinary patients,” according to a statement on their website. The majority of pain in animals is actually chronic and difficult to detect. The misconception many owners have is that if a dog or cat is in pain, it will cry out or whine to alert their owner. However, this is uncommon, making illnesses like arthritis and cancer appear to be signs of aging. The problem may actually be more serious than aging; even dental issues can lead to

chronic pain and illness if unnoticed and untreated. Chronic pain usually lasts several weeks to months and persists beyond the expected healing time. A yearly wellness visit with a veterinarian is the best way to determine if a pet is suffering from chronic pain. There are universal signs that owners can look for when trying to assess whether their pet might be suffering from chronic pain. These include: decreased activity and appetite, difficulty standing after lying down, or extreme weight loss. In dogs, unusually submissive behavior, anxious expression, and guarded behaviors may be indicative of chronic pain. Cats can be especially good at hiding illnesses; owners should

in response to touch. Constant chewing, licking, or grooming may also be a sign of chronic pain and illness. Owners are advised to seek veterinary care right away if they suspect chronic pain in their pet. For more information about pain management and pets, visit ivapm.org.
