Yard waste Concerns prompt Letter from FRCA attorney

Cement worker of The monthGary Butko

By ED PANY Mr. Gary Butko was reared in Northampton, graduating from Northampton High School and Vo-Tech, specializing in masonry in 1976. Gary’s first job was with a bricklaying firm, earning five dollars an hour. After a few years he was employed by MCP, a metal company for 18 years. When the

plant closed, he started his cement career at LaFarge, recalling, “I started on the tire deck feeding tires into the plant’s kilns, later transferring to the labor gang and the pack house.” Today, Mr. Butko is part of a 9-man packing team. by KERI LINDENMUTH Allen Township received a letter from the First Regional Compost Authority’s attorney David Backenstoe. The letter came following concerns about contractors using the township’s yard waste collection site instead of using FRCA’s main Weaversville Road collection site. Under FRCA rule, contractors must use the larger drop-off site and pay for its services. However, Allen Township has allowed contractors (as long as they are with a township resident) to drop off yard waste at the Indian Trail Road site. The idea behind Allen Township’s rule, explained Supervisor Dale Hassler during the township’s August 27 meeting, is to help residents who cannot move yard waste themselves. He said if a homeowner hires a contractor to do work, contractors should be allowed to dispose of the yard waste materials at Indian Trail Road. Otherwise, the homeowner would have to hire an additional truck or bring the yard waste to the site themselves, something that may be difficult for elderly residents. “This is not meant to help contractors. This is meant to help residents who cannot do it themselves,” he said. “It is not being abused.” Supervisor Bruce Frack agreed, calling the township’s rule “a good thing.” However, Supervisor Larry Oberly thought differently. “We do not have the right to

change the policy of the Authority,” he said. He said that the fees paid by township residents are not enough to keep FRCA “afloat.” FRCA needs the business from contractors to keep it alive. If contractors are allowed to use Allen Township’s smaller site in lieu of the Weaversville Road site, FRCA is not getting the appropriate fees it needs. Instead, Oberly predicts that FRCA will raise the per-capita cost for township residents. Hassler said that the issue is being “blown out of proportion.” Township Manager Ilene Eckhart added that commercial dumping has not been a problem at the Indian Trail Road site since it was closed at nights. Supervisor Gary Behler said that the rules, posted on the township’s website, should be rewritten to stress that a resident of the township must be in the vehicle to drop off any waste at the site, commercial or otherwise. That makes it a true “residential drop-off.” Hassler agreed, saying that will make “everyone happy.” Oberly was not too sure. “Everyone except FRCA,” he added. Also during the meeting, Eckhart discussed possibly adding two curbside pick-up days for organic materials. She said one day in the fall and one day in the spring should be enough for residents to get rid of their yard waste. Residents could bundle the materials and leave them for pub-

7 customer Service don’ts

Sometimes we need to look at the experts to understand what are the most successful ways to provide excellent customer service. So, let’s talk Disney. When a “cast member” arrives, they are taught to focus on four key points: safety, courtesy, show and efficiency. Having said that, they also train their staff to understand what not to do; better known as the “seven don’ts.” 1. Don’t slouch, sit or cross your arms. These postures, according to Disney, may appear to look like you are unapproachable or even lazy. 2. Don’t ruin the Disney look. No crazy piercings, tattoos need to be covered, nails and make-up neutral and no clothes that are too revealing. 3. Don’t say “I don’t know.”

September 5-11, 2019 3 by CAROL RITTER

4. Don’t point with one finger. Interestingly, pointing with one finger is considered rude in some cultures. So, use two fingers or whole hand. 5. Don’t give a bad show. What this means is keep the magic alive for the guests. Always maintain character integrity no matter what. 6. Don’t forget to put safety first. During crisis situations, cast members are taught to be stern

The correct answer is, “let me find out for you.” You can use your radio to find out an answer, Continued on page 4 never leave them hanging.

and above all else, get the guest to a safe situation. 7. Don’t ever ignore a guest. This includes having your phone in your hands, talking to another cast member too long, or zoning out. Guests come first, no matter what. We could all take a look at how we treat our customers. One thing that jumps out to me is what I’ve personally experienced way too many times and that is two cashiers talking to one another and making me wait to pay my bill or asking a person a question and getting a big “I don’t know” coupled with a big “I don’t care” attitude. In our world today, with the competition, to be the best restaurant in the valley, or the best hospital nationwide, it’s paramount that customer service is at the forefront of your daily responsibilities. You may not be vying to be number one, but all small businesses are vying to make money and build a reputation. If so, think Disney.

Submitted by KATHERINE NOLL Over the past several years, stress, anxiety, depression, addiction, online bullying and harassment, and mass shootings have increased. As a result of these stressors, more students have considered or attempted suicide because they believe that life is hopeless. Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold an event, "1 Reason Why Not" ™ at its Bethlehem and Monroe Campuses. Bethlehem: Tuesday, September 10, 11 a.m., College Center, Room 190; Monroe: Tuesday, September 10, 11 a.m., Pocono Hall, Room 108. Participants will be introduced to solutions to challenges making an impact on today's college students. They will engage in conversations about mental health issues including risk factors, overall impact and strategies for promoting health and well-being.

Gracedale Nursing Home Receives 3-star Rating Submitted by BECKY BARTLETT Lamont McClure and the staff of Gracedale Nursing Home are pleased to report that Gracedale received a three-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The rating will be displayed on the Nursing Home Compare website on or around August 28. Previously, when it was under the administration of Premier, Gracedale had been rated as two stars. Northampton County reassumed control of the facility in January 2019. “We need to continue to work to have a five-star rating,” says Lamont McClure, “but as long as Gracedale is striving to meet our moral obligation of taking care of those who can no longer care for themselves while balancing the interests of the taxpayers who pay the bills, we’re on the right track.” Gracedale is the largest countyowned nursing home under one roof in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It currently serves 654 residents. According to Census data, other nursing homes in Pennsylvania only serve an average of 109.8 residents. The U.S. average is 86.1. Eighty-seven percent of Gracedale’s residents are recipients of Medicaid and represent 44 percent of the entire Medicaid nursing home population in Northampton County. Gracedale does not refuse care to anyone in need, which means the facility often accepts those with the most serious medical and psychological issues.

Help kids kick Cancer by giving Blood with the Red Cross Red Cross and Sport Clips haircuts partner To raise awareness of Childhood cancers, offer Free haircut coupon to Donors in September

www.HomeNewsPA.com

Submitted by ALANA MAUGER September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood to support kids, teens and young adults battling cancer, as well as others in need of transfusions. The National Cancer Institute estimated that more than 15,000 children and adolescents in the U.S. would be diagnosed with cancer last year. Childhood cancer patients may need blood products on a regular basis during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications. Cancer and cancer treatments can put patients at risk for low red blood cell and platelet counts. Some types of chemotherapy can damage bone marrow, lowering the production of red blood cells and platelets. Cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma attack the bone marrow as well. Blood and platelet transfusions can enable patients to receive critical treatments needed to fight and survive cancer. Blood donors of all blood types are urgently needed to replenish the blood supply following a summer blood shortage. As a thank-you, those who come to give Aug. 30-Sept. 3 will receive

Make an appointment to donate by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. Blood drives are also essential in helping ensure blood is available for patients this winter. To learn more and sign up to host a blood drive, visit RedCrossBlood.org/HostADrive. Sport Clips and Red Cross partnership highlights childhood cancer awareness Donors can do good and look good this September when they donate blood or platelets with the Red Cross and get a free haircut coupon from Sport Clips Haircuts – a proud supporter of childhood cancer research – during the annual Saving Lives Never Looked So Good campaign. Those who come out to give blood or platelets Sept. 1-30 will receive a coupon for a free haircut via email several days after their donation. Gab over by Pete The Fence G. Ossip This is the time of year when we all reflect back to 9-11, where we were and realize what's important and how lucky we are living in a properous, beautiful and free nation. Thanks to our founders, the brave men and women who have fought and served this nation and the first responders that we have come to respect after the terrorist attacks of that September day, eighteen years ago. . . Seems like yesterday . . . we all need to teach the youngsters of today the history of this great nation and the lessons of the past, so the generations in the future will always live free and prosperous.. . . With that we may ask - what can I do to make a difference? . . Well look no farther than your local volunteer fire fighters, always seeking new members, they do selfless work and help keep our taxes low, maybe we could spare a few hours a week. . . Dogs and their owners will soon have a new playground, the Bath Paw Park with dirt mounds and all is going up on North Chestnut Street, Mayor Fi says an opening ceremony will take place October 13 . . . It should be a pair of great division battles this week as the Phillies need to win the se-

ries against those Mets and Braves with the season on the line. . . This is the last month to get fresh from the farm produce on Fridays down at the market on Green Street, see you there. . . Anyhow, time for a nap.

Sermonette Defeat or Victory

By Frank Homme Many veterans each year remember on June 18 the great Battle of Waterloo’s, what is recalled - is now Belgium. On that day in 1815, Napoleon’s French army, noted in history was defeated. Many of you know in history a mutational force commanded by the Duke of Wellington. Since then the phrase to “meet your Waterloo” has to mean, “to be defeated by someone who is too strong for you or by a problem that is too difficult for you.” When it comes to our spiritual lives, some people feel that ultimate failure is inevitable and it’s only a matter of time until each of us will “meet our Waterloo.” But John refuted that pessimistic were when wrote to followers of Jesus. “Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This victory that has overcome the world evens the faith.” (1John 5:4). John weaves this theme of spiritual victory throughout his first letter as he urges us not to love the things this world offers, which will soon fade away (1John 2:15-17). Instead, we are to love and please God, “And this is what He promised us – Eternal Life” (2:25). Spiritual growth is also marked by an increase in two things- joy and struggle. Faith is often developed through hardship because living out the principles of trust and endurance helps us see the connection and grasp how it works. So our relationship with God will deepen when we encounter new trials and temptations as opportunities for us to mature. Paul, David, and Daniel prove that adversity can help form spiritual grunts. These men recognized sovereign God as the gatekeeper of their lives. In Rom.

8:28, once we are convinced that Jesus is our Savior, but is demonstrated through action. As a “new creature” (Cor. 5:17), we each are no longer who we once were, and are different values and priorities for us to be our priority. The Father has sent His spirit to live in us and teach us. The Psalmist rejoiced in affection because trails added to his knowledge of God. Hardships also enriched his heart spirit. Those whom God leads to triumph over affection (Psalm 119:71-76) became the fragrance of His care to hurting world (Psalm 2:9). We care cheer to do discouraged, relief to the hurting, and the message of Christ’s love to all. So it is our spiritual heart. We strength and tone the heart through the word of truth by receiving its message of God’s goodness and grace. Keeping our spiritual heart strong and fit must be our first priority, the one thing we do above all others. God’s timing is designed to grow us in faith. While we may have ups and downs in life, and even some battles that feel like defeats, the ultimate victory is ours in Christ as we trust His power. When it comes to problems, the way out is to trust God all the way through. After the war between the states was ended, Jefferson Davis found himself in debt so great, that he was unable to pay even the interest on his loans. Interest accumulated, so that the more he paid, the more he owed. It was impossible for him to pay off his debt. One day, he went to the bank to make his payment, and the teller refused to accept his money. “You owe us nothing,” said the teller. “I cannot accept any money from you.” “You see, a friend of yours who is wealthy paid your bill, by imputing his wealth to your account.” That’s what Jesus did. God is our protection and our strength. He always helps in times of trouble. – Psalms 46:12.

TenderHearted Thursday

Saturday September 21st, 2019 New York Yankees vs Toronto Blue Jays ($100.00 per person - $50.00 Deposit Per Ticket)

By CYNTHIA SNYDER-DELUCA

I wrote Tender- Hearted Thursday a bit ago, but decided to bring it back. Now, I know that Christmas is a way off, but the meaning of the story can certainly apply to the every day sadness we hear on the news and read in the paper. I

hope my words will touch hearts. One of my favorite Hallmark movies is The Christmas Visitor. It is a story about a family who suffered the loss of their military son in Desert Storm on Christmas Eve. The family was devastated and stopped celebrating Christmas. After several years, the fallen soldier's father decided that he wanted to bring some happiness back into their home. So, he did what he did every day. He went to visit his son's grave, then purchased new lights for the tree he intended to buy. Soon, he met a young man working his way home for the holidays. A long story short, the young man was his son, who looked different. He came to help his family come together and find happiness. The young man had a message for each member of his family. A message of hope and love. At the end of the movie, when the father takes the young man to a crossroad to continue his journey, something beautiful happened. As the young man walked down the road, he stopped, turned, and looked at the man who brought him. At that very moment, his face changed, and he became his father's son. He saluted, and his father saluted back. I have watched this movie every Christmas. In fact, I have viewed it over and over many times. I always cry when the father realizes who the messenger really was. The Christmas Visitor was filled with neighbors helping neighbors, a family dealing with a devastating loss and the passing of love to one another. Now, you might be thinking, it’s just a movie, and you would be right. But to me, it was the perfect example of what is missing today- empathy. I am tender-hearted, and I am not ashamed of it. I wear my heart on my sleeve and will go out of my way to help another in need. In this day and age, tenderhearted people are becoming a minority. Sometimes I wish I had a magic wand and the ability to fly. Now that would certainly be a sight to see. However, something in our country and the world must change. We need to replace the hate, bullying, greed, disrespect, and lack of empathy with a genuine caring for one another. We need more tender-hearted people. And we need more earth angels to bring messages of hope to all those who are struggling in one way or another. There was a person, thousands of years ago who was tenderhearted. He loved everyone He met. He healed the sick and the lame. He suffered and died on a cross. I will continue to be tenderhearted. I will cry watching sad movies and cry when I watch happy movies. It is just who I am. Being kind and loving is not hard. It’s where it has always been- in your heart.

Back to school: L&I Offers reminders About job rules for Teens during the School Year

Submitted by LINDSAY BRACALE As students go back to school and maintain employment during the school year, Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) Secretary Jerry Oleksiak is reminding Pennsylvanians that the state’s Child Labor Law limits working hours and the types of work that may be performed by employees under age 18 while in school. “Students who work during the school year can get valuable work experience and earn a paycheck year-round,” Oleksiak said. “But businesses that hire young people must follow the laws in place to protect younger workers, prioritize their education, and ensure they have a safe, positive experience.” Pennsylvania’s Child Labor Law protects the health, safety and welfare of minors employed in the commonwealth by restricting employment in certain establishments, the hours of work, work conditions and occupations involved. The law covers three age groups: less than 14 years of age, 14- and 15-year-olds, and 16- and 17-year-olds. All minors under 16 must have a written statement by the minor’s parent or guardian acknowledging the duties and hours of employment and granting permission to work. All minors under 18 must obtain a work permit before starting work. Under-14 Work Restrictions Children under age 14 may not be employed in any occupation; however, they are permitted to work on a family farm or in domestic service, such as lawn or house chores. Other exceptions are made for caddies, newsContinued on page 15

“Precious Lord”

God gave this much-loved gospel song to Tommy Dorsey during the darkest days of his life. Here’s his story: “Back in 1932, my wife, Nettie, was in the last month of pregnancy with our first child. I was to be the featured soloist at a large revival meeting in St. Louis. I didn’t want to go, but a lot of people were expecting me. I kissed Nettie goodbye and chugged out of Chicago on Route 66 in our Model A. Outside the city, I discovered I had forgotten my music case. I headed back and found Nettie sleeping peacefully. I hesitated by her bed...something was strongly telling me to stay. But I shrugged it off and quietly slipped out with my music. “The next night, the crowd in St. Louis called on me to sing again and again. When I finally sat down a messenger boy ran up with a telegram: YOUR WIFE JUST DIED. I rushed to a phone and called home. All I heard was “Nettie is dead.” When I got back I learned that Nettie had given birth to a boy. I swung between grief and joy. Yet that night the baby died. I buried Nettie and our little boy together in the same casket. Then I fell apart. For days I closeted myself. I felt that God had done me an injustice. I didn’t want to serve Him any more. I just wanted to go back to that jazz world I once knew so well. Hunched alone those first sad days, I thought of when something kept telling me to stay with Nettie. Was that God? Oh, if I had paid more attention to Him. I vowed to listen more closely to Him. But still I was lost in grief. Everyone was kind to me, especially a friend, Professor Fry, who seemed to know what I needed. He took me to a neighborhood music school. I sat down at the piano and my hands began to browse over the keys. Something happened to me then. I felt at peace. I felt as though I could reach out and touch God. I found myself playing a melody, the words just seemed to fall into place: ‘Precious Lord, take my hand, Lead me on, let me stand! I am tired, I am weak, I am worn, Through the storm, through the night, Lead me on to the light, Take my hand, precious Lord, Lead me home.’ “The Lord gave me these words and melody. He also healed my spirit. I learned that when we are in our deepest grief, when we feel farthest from God, this is when He is closest and when we are most open to His restoring power.”

It happened to Me! by KATHLEEN UNGER

A few weeks ago I received an email from someone I thought was a friend, a classmate of mine who lives in California. The email said, “Do me a favor.” “I need a birthday gift for my niece and I am traveling so I can’t get to a store to buy her a gift. Would you go to a store and buy three $100 gift cards for Netflix and email me the numbers off the cards?” So wanting to please my former classmate, I went to the pharmacy nearby and picked out three gift cards, each worth $100. I have a friend in the pharmacy department and I asked her what she knew about these cards. She immediately said, “Scam, scam!

Don’t buy them.” I returned the cards to the card rack and went home. The message on my computer stated, “I’m waiting!” I typed this message: “Before I give you any numbers, what year did you graduate from high school and when is your birthday?” This irritated the scammer and he said, “You’ve got to be kidding,” before hanging up. I immediately called my friend in California and relayed the story to him. He told me he had at least eight other calls about the scam. Someone had hacked into his Facebook address book and sent the same message to everyone in his book. He called his Facebook friends and told them it was a scam and finally got it straightened out. I wonder how many $300 gift cards he scammed from other people.
