From The Editor’s Desk. This is our Go Green edition and I’m proud to say our company does all it can to be as environmentally friendly as possible. We recycle, try not to waste anything that can be reused and, or course, many of you have seen our company’s very economical Smart Car in parades throughout the year. The Green Movement has become somewhat trendy and politicized in recent years with documentaries and politicians calling attention to the dangers of global warming and other potentially catastrophic consequences of pollution. But, no matter what your stance or politics, I think we can all agree that some practical and easy things like recycling really do a great deal of good for our natural world. One of my pet peeves is littering. Nothing makes me angrier than going to one of my favorite fishing spots and seeing trash strewn around. Remember local fisherman, even if you fill beer cans with water and sink em’, it’s still littering. Also, as one of our astute facebook friends pointed out; throwing cigarette butts out car windows is never a good idea – brush fire

warnings or not. So, I think we can all do our part and continue to keep our lakes, hiking trails and forests scenic reminders of natural beauty. Let’s not squander all of our awesome nature areas throughout our reading area by littering. Oceans! Would you like to live in a house under the ocean? It might be possible, but we don’t know enough about the world's oceans yet to be able to build cities and live in the sea. Oceanographers, scientists who study the ocean, hope to unlock its many secrets. They study how the ocean affects our earth and our lives. They watch the effect our actions have on the oceans and ocean life. You can be an "oceanographer" for a few minutes. Look at a flat map of the world or run your finger along a globe to see how the world's oceans join into one huge global or "world ocean." Notice how the continents (large land masses) divide the world ocean into four or five large oceans (depends upon the map or globe).

This ocean is east of Africa and south of Asia. 5. The waters of this ocean surround Antarctica. Some say it is only the southern parts of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.

It will be at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at 1933 Hanover Avenue in Allentown. Paul Kunkel will be the speaker that day. Anyone that likes to hear Dutch and eat a good Pennsylvania Dutch meal is invited. You must, however, buy your ticket before Wednesday, May 2. Paul Kunkel had for 30 years held Pennsylvania Dutch classes for the Groundhog Lodges. Many times also he spoke before various civic groups about Dutch beliefs and superstitions. He is also a very popular speaker among those in our area that attend Fersammlings. At our Fersammling you will always hear a good talk in the Dutch, but you yourself can speak either Dutch or English at your table. You need to purchase a ticket to attend and the cost is $20.00 per person. Tickets must be bought before May 2. Our treasurer’s phone number is 610-264-2979. The Pennsylvania German Friends meet at St. Peter’s on the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm, with the exceptions of May, when we have our Fersammling, and the months of July and August. For further information, call our treasurer at 610264-2979. [About 2 years ago, the leaders of ‘Es Fersommle Fesht Un Der Bushkill’, which Florence Baver helped start in 1953, decided to disband and graciously gave their mailing list to the ‘Friends’. So in a small way, we are continuing the tradition which Florence started. If you enjoy Dutch, the ‘Friends’ say, “Kumm mol rei.”“Come in once.”]

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Blue Bombers are Flying under the Radar
There is much rejoicing going on in Palmerton. Both the baseball and softball teams have sprung out to a fast start here in early spring. The lady Blue Bombers were boasting a 6-2 record overall and a 4-2 record in the Colonial League as of April 15. Their baseball counterparts success has surprised the entire Lehigh Valley. Palmerton’s baseball team is 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the Colonial League as of April 15. Those records don’t depict the actual story. Tom Smelas’s ball club got off to a rough start, but has revived their season after big wins over league favorite, Pen Argyl. They also beat Catty and Northern Lehigh.
The head coach of the Palmerton’s softball team, Glenn Reimer, discussed his girls’ success, “We are pleased with our start... but we know we still haven’t played to [the best of our ability]. We have a fairly young team with seven freshmen on the roster. On any given day four or five of them start. They are working out the butterflies. We are hopeful [that] we start clicking on all cylinders.” Reimer knows he has youth on his roster and he understands the learning curve, “We need to be a little more patient at the plate and on the field we need to think about what [we are doing] and where we are going on every pitch more consistently.
Page 13
We also have to make sure one error doesn’t lead to two or three or more.” Although Reimer is happy with his team, he is not complacent. He does feel that if their play improves in the areas he mentioned they will be contenders for some championships down the stretch. After two early league losses to Northwestern and Bangor, the Palmerton baseball program looked like it was going down the typical unsuccessful path it had taken in recent seasons. The aforementioned victories over Pen Argyl, Catty and Northern Lehigh changed the culture of their 2012 campaign. Smelas, head coach of the baseball team, is not surprised by his team’s recent success, “...I've been expecting it. We have a number of seniors that have a fair amount of experience and our expectations coming into the season was to do well from the start. We got off to a slow start, but we're putting things together now and hopefully it continues.” The boys have a few tough games ahead of them against Notre Dame G.P, Southern Lehigh and Salisbury. How Smelas’ team fares against those three teams could determine the rest of their season. Both of these teams have legitimate shots at being contenders. Teams are reaching the halfway points of their seasons this week and now their chances are starting to increase or decrease depending on their record. The Colonial League softball title is up for grabs as all the teams are within striking distance. The baseball team is definitely the underdog in the Colonial League, but they have the ability to pull off the upset. Going unnoticed could work in their advantage as they can win without the pressure while the spotlight is on the division leaders, Pen Argyl and Salisbury. As you follow the Colonial League’s spring sports in the next few weeks, take it all in as anything is possible, but be aware of the Blue Bombers as they are flying under the radar. e-mail: extrapoint@townandcountrygazette.com Twitter: @tylertrumbauer Facebook Updates: Town & Country Gazette

(NewsUSA) - During hotter days, the wonderful coolness of our air-conditioned homes is comforting until the whopping energy bill arrives. The American Lighting Association (ALA) offers the following easy ways to use less energy and save money. Replace bulbs with CFLs Switch out incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent versions. "A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) can provide the same amount of light as an incandescent by using only one-quarter of the electricity," explains Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for the ALA and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky's School of Interior Design. "One of the great myths regarding lighting today is that the federal government is 'banning' incandescent lighting," Rey-Barreau says. "This is false. Incandescent lighting is not being banned. The new legislation is only affecting the standard 100-watt incandescent bulb, which will no longer be sold beginning in 2012. However, an incandescent bulb that uses only 72 watts will replace it. This new bulb uses halogen incandescent technology to produce a more efficient incandescent bulb." Install ceiling fans Install a ceiling fan in frequently occupied rooms. Ceiling fans use a fraction of the electricity of an AC unit. Therefore, the thermostat can be raised six degrees -- say, to 78 degrees -- and make a room feel as comfortable as if the ambient temperature were really 72 degrees. Utilize lighting controls Lighting controls are an excellent option for saving energy. It is not necessary to invest in a comprehensive control system where the entire house is rewired. There are simple and lessexpensive methods for controlling light to save energy, such as motion sensors, photocells that operate according to light levels, timers and dimmers.

LTRT Flower Sale
Due to opposition by some residents of Lehigh Township and a lack of support by township supervisors, members of the Lehigh Township Rails to Trails committee will be moving on and supporting other area rail-trail organizations, where their efforts are more likely to be appreciated. The group will also be redefining their mission. Flower vouchers for Hickory Grove are valid and will continue to be sold until May 1st. They can be redeemed any time during the month of May. Members of LTRT would like to thank everyone who supported us and our goal of starting a trail in the township. Our fundraisers have been very successful. In addition, we received many, many positive comments about our group from area residents. See you on the trails!

Watershed Association Nature Walk The Bertsch-Hokendauqua-Catasauqua Watershed Association will sponsor a free, educational nature walk in celebration of Earth Day on the grounds of the Mary Immaculate Center in Lehigh Township, Northampton County on Sunday, April 22—Earth Day 2012. Program participants will meet at 12:45pm in the parking lot at Indian Trail Park, which is located at the junction of Route 248 and Indian Trail Road in Lehigh Township, adjacent to the grounds of the Mary Immaculate Center. Participants will leave the parking lot on foot at 1:00pm for a modest walk at a comfortable pace on the Center grounds. The Mary Immaculate Center is one of the largest, contiguously forested tracts of land in northwestern Northampton County. The land includes a reach of Indian Creek, two small ponds, numerous wetlands, springs, seeps, rock outcrops and breathtaking views from one of the highest vantage points in the region. The Center is owned by the Archdioceses of Philadelphia, so public access is limited to planned events like this. Naturalists Bud Cole, local outdoor writer and columnist, and Bob Hosking, natural resources
Linda’s
professional, will lead participants through the forests and fields of the Mary Immaculate Center in search of spring wildflowers, songbirds and butterflies. This walk covers several miles of variable terrain, including some fairly steep grades, on the property’s internal road system. Participants should wear supportive, comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for several hours of outdoor adventure. They should also bring a snack and water. Come learn about the nature of this beautiful reach of the Indian Creek Watershed. While the program is free, registration is required. To register, call Bud Cole at 610/767-4042 or send email to bbbcole@enter. net.

Lifesaver For Pets K9 Innovations of Walnutport and owner Valerie Attrill graciously donated three pet oxygen masks to the Lehigh Township Vol Fire Co. earlier this week. The fire company is very honored to have a local resident and businesswoman make a much needed donation! The cone shaped devices are designed to help save the pets life should they be needed. The masks are constructed to fit over the pets face, whether that be a cat or a dog. Lehigh Township Fire Co. joins a growing number of local fire companies with this life saving device.

PA German Friends Annual Fersammling With Paul Kunkle, Speaker Paul Kunkel, longtime leader and educator in the Pennsylvania German community, will give a presentation in the dialect at the Pennsylvania German Friends 21st Annual Fersammling on Saturday, May 12, at 1 p.m. The event takes place at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 1933 Hanover Avenue, Allentown and is open to the public. Please note the deadline for ticket purchases is Tuesday, May 1. For thirty years Kunkel had helped to organize classes in the Pennsylvania German dialect, which has been in decline after being spoken in this region for almost 300 years. The classes, taught through the area’s fraternal Groundhog Lodges, revived interest in the culture. Kunkel also works to preserve the heritage through speaking engagements at various civic groups as well as traditional Dutch Fersammlinge (gatherings). Kunkel had also served as president of the advisory board for the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University. The Fersammling is a banquet, featuring traditional Pennsylvania German fare and an address in the dialect. Speaking “Dutch” is not a

Programming Thermostats for Savings (NewsUSA) - From smart phones to programmable thermostats, today's electronics come equipped with advanced operating systems that make life easier and more efficient. The challenge is knowing how to take full advantage of the capabilities of these devices. Consider indoor environment devices like programmable thermostats. Programmable thermostats are capable of controlling the entire heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system -- from heating to indoor air quality and energy management. "Adjusting the temperature up and down doesn't equate to savings or even comfort in the home," said Jonathan Payne, product manager of programmable controls at Carrier. "The key to total comfort is the homeowner's ability to control the temperature, humidity, air circulation and energy use." Although many homes have programmable thermostats, they may not be programmed or used properly. To truly realize the advantages of a programmable thermostat, consider these tips: 1. Choose a thermostat that manages your system properly and efficiently. Select a thermostat that is not only easy for you to understand and program, but one that controls all of the equipment in your HVAC system, including an air purifier, humidifier, air conditioner, furnace and/or heat pump. 2. Have the HVAC control or thermostat installed by a Carrier authorized dealer or other HVAC expert to ensure the wiring and settings are configured to match
the needs of your specific system. 3. Choose a program that fits well with your lifestyle, and stick with it. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), energy can be saved if you keep energy-saving set points activated for longer timeframes. So, you could leave home energy-saving set points on during the work/school day, or at night when family members are asleep, for instance. 4. Avoid overuse of the temporary "hold" feature. If you consistently "hold" or over-ride the pre-programmed settings, you could be wasting energy. The EPA suggests that the "hold" and "vacation" settings should be set several degrees warmer and cooler in the summer and winter months, respectively, and only used when you're away from home for an extended stay. 5. Try not to achieve a quick fix. The EPA's Proper Use Guidelines for Programmable Controls indicates that you will not heat or cool your house faster by adjusting the temperature on your thermostat to the extremes -up to 80 degrees or down to 30 degrees

Coin Wars Recently, the Team 8 students at Northern Lehigh Middle School conducted a "Coin Wars" competition to benefit the American Red Cross. Each day for a month, loose change was collected and placed in homeroom jars. This effort amounted to a donation of $400 to the Lehigh Valley chapter of this organization. Mrs. Filipovits' homeroom won the "war" and will be treated to a forthcoming pizza party.

Mallory Bomboy Memorial Softball Tournament
The Mallory Bomboy Memorial Softball Tournament Committee along with the Parkland League, Northern Lehigh Softball and the Lehigh Valley Umpires Association are pleased to announce that the 6th annual softball tournament will be held on Saturday, April 28th, with rain date of Sunday, April 29th. We are expecting around 1500 girls from 30 different softball organizations to participate in this great event. The Committee hopes to make this year’s tournament bigger and better than last years. The games will be played at fields in the Slatington/Walnutport area, as well as fields at Ormrod, Hokey and Lehigh Twp. With the help of sponsors and participants in the last 5 years, over $55,000 was raised in Mallory’s memory. Even after six years, Mallory’s enthusiasm, team spirit and zest for life touch a lot

of hearts and her loss is still being felt throughout the community. The Officers and the Bomboy family have distributed $20,000.00 for college scholarships to several Parkland League senior students from different high schools. $12,000 has been given back to the family’s Mallory Bomboy Scholarship. At Christmas, the Committee helped a local family to have a better Christmas. We also made a donation to a local umpire’s family after his untimely death. And finally, we have donated $6,000 to the Eagles Nest Building Fund. This money has helped them develop a multi – purpose building at Eagles Nest which will benefit the entire Northern Lehigh community. Come out and visit Eagles Nest and see that the building is now a reality. The last several years, $3,500.00 was donated to Coplay Sports, whose building was destroyed by fire and is once again operating. Also $1,500.00 was donated to Laurys Softball organization to rebuild dugouts. In past years $1,500.00 went to Northwestern and Ormrod Youth Associations to help them make major improvements to their facilities. Last year large donations were given to the Palmerton and West End Youth Center Allentown. Funds raised in this year’s tournament will be distributed in a similar manner. One-third of the proceeds will go towards Scholarships for current Parkland Softball League Seniors, one-third for the family's Mallory Bomboy Scholarship, and one-third will be donated to one of the participating organizations that are in the process of a community capital improvement project. Needy families in our area will also be helped. Each of the players pay an entrance fee of $10.00, for which in return they receive a memorial shirt, play 2 games and make a donation to the cause. Umpires agree to officiate the games at a muchreduced cost, with many donating their fee back to the tournament. At least 90 teams are anticipated, ranging from ages 5-19. Plan on attending some of the games at the many locations and support the cause by eating or drinking at the fully stocked refreshment stands. There will be drawings with great prizes and fun for the whole family. The tournament will conclude with a Ceremony and Mallory Tournament Alumni game coached by Mallory’s father Tim Bomboy against Lehigh Twp Mallory Tournament Alumni coached by Northern Lehigh graduate Marc Messinger under the lights at Walnutport beginning at 7:30 p.m. Please contact Charlie Maurer at 610-7678084 for more information.

This might be the Year to Remodel your Bathroom
Typically, an average bathroom costs less to remodel than a kitchen. In today’s week economy homeowners are cautious about putting money into any remodeling project and more homeowners are focusing on remodeling projects that reap long term rewards. Your bathroom may be one of these. In most homes the bathroom is one of the smallest rooms. The trend of large luxurious bathrooms is out and replacing tubs, showers, faucets, sinks, flooring and cabinets in existing General Hauling Firewood Stone Mulch

homes is in. Before you consult with a contractor, come up with some general ideas about what you want to do. Smaller fixtures and recessed built-ins are available today and can make your bathroom feel larger and more spacious. One of the biggest water guzzlers is the bathroom. The bathroom accounts for more than half of the family’s indoor water use. Newer toilets are much more efficient and compact. Not only can they save you space, but water too. There are new toilets on the market that only use 1.28 gallons of water per flush vs. the older models that can range anywhere from 1.6 gallons to 3.5 gallons of water to flush. This could be an important consideration if you are planning on remodeling your bathroom and an additional item to consider if you pay monthly water bills. Consult with a plumber or supply house on the newest, efficient products on the market. Combination bathtubs and showers now come with shelves, hand rails and utilize space. There are safe and accessible showers that allow users to bathe while seated along with faucets and shower heads that can save water at the same time. Continued on Page 37
