Property owners of Northampton County submitted by DORA BOYD SIMONS
Northampton County is cooperating with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources- Bureau of Forestry and the USDA Forest Service in a joint effort to spray gypsy moth caterpillars this spring in certain residential and public high-use areas within the County. The areas scheduled for treatment are located in or near the townships or municipalities of Forks, Upper Mt. Bethel, Pen Argyl, Plainfield, Bushkill, Upper Nazareth, Chapman, Moore, Danielsville, Lehigh, Stocker town, Bath, Walnutport and Cherryville. These treatment areas were selected on the basis of surveys and resident requests received last summer- no additional areas can be added at this time. A biological insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt), which only affects leaf-eating caterpillars, will be used. However, (Bt) may not kill all of the gypsy moth caterpillars. In severe infestations the percentage of surviving gypsy moth caterpillars may still be sufficient to cause some defoliation and also be a nuisance to the homeowner. Because of this and the variability in control caused by the weather, the results cannot be guaranteed.

The spraying is scheduled to occur sometime in late April to early June depending upon caterpillar and leaf development. Local news channels will carry information on more specific dates. Spraying will be done by aircraft starting daily at daybreak and continue as long as wind and other conditions are acceptable. Evening, weekend and holiday spraying will also be conducted when conditions permit. Normally, only one treatment will be applied to any particular property. (Bt) has not been shown to be harmful to humans, pets, livestock or gardens. However, it is recommended that you observe normal precautions and remain under cover during the spray. If exposed to the spray, wash with soap and water. Program standards provide for the treatment of a forested buffer extending no more than 500 feet from residence(s) being protected. Open fields, open areas containing only a few scattered trees and narrow fence rows will not be treated. Detailed maps of the treatment areas are available for your review at the Common Wealth of Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry Division of Forest Pest Management website http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/insectsdisease/ gypsymoth/ Landowners within approved spray blocks were individually notified in December, January and February. 7 Benefits of Green Cleaning LEARN WHY YOU SHOULD SWITCH TO ECO-FRIENDLY CLEANING PRODUCTS Submitted by CAROL RUTH WEBER
As lives become busier, over-scheduled and more stressful, it's easy to gravitate towards the latest products that promise to make annoying chores even easier. Need a bathroom cleaner? On your next trip to the store, you grab one of the many bright and colorful bottles promising to be a quick fix. But did you ever think about what's in that container? Whether you're a housekeeper who cleans with these products all day or someone who cleans your own home regularly, you should take the time to consider it. Most are made up of harsh cocktails of chemicals, which can be bad for your health -- and your kids' health. As people rethink what they're bringing into their homes, they're looking for greener solutions. Two experts Leslie Reichert, author of "Joy of Green Cleaning," and Sara Snow, author of "Sara Snow's Fresh Living," share the reasons why people

should make the switch to green cleaning products. What to try green cleaning for yourself? Read up on Green Cleaning: 12 Natural Solutions that Really Work »
1. Healthier Home
If you go green, "No longer will there be chemicals absorbed into the skin or breathed in by the person cleaning," Reichert says. Health benefits extend to family members who are no longer breathing in cleaners lingering in the air and sitting on surfaces. Studies have shown that using a household
cleaning spray, even as little as once a week, raises the risk of developing asthma. Snow says that using green cleaning products can reduce the chances of developing asthma, which "today is the most common chronic illness and the leading cause of school absences due to chronic illness across the country."
2. Purer Environment
When you use many cleaning products, "harmful chemicals are being released into the environment," Continued on page 20

says Reichert. Not great for you and the people around you to breathe in. Changing to greener methods, "helps reduce pollution to our waterways and the air and it minimizes your impact on ozone depletion and global climate change with fewer smog-producing chemicals," advises Snow. Many green products also use recyclable packaging which minimizes waste.
3. Safer Products
Conventional cleaning products pose risks such as chemical burns to the cleaner's skin and eyes.

Green cleaners aren't corrosive and meet strict standards regarding inhalation toxicity, combustibility and skin absorption.
4. Better Air Quality
As with most people, Snow can't stand the "stench of strong chemical odors." Many green cleaning products -- including store bought and ones you can make at home -- include pleasant natural essential oils. Reichert even refers to cleaning with these products as her "aromatherapy."
5. Less Expensive
"For home cleaning, vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, etc. can do the trick for pennies on the dollar, compared to buying conventional cleaning products," Snow says. Why go out and buy products when you can use things you already have in your pantry? Investing in green products also makes sense for companies. "The cost of environmentally friendly cleaning products has become much more competitive, while cleaning in an environmentally sound way reduces the risk of sick days for employees and the risk of fires and chemical spills," mentions Snow.
6. Fewer Antibacterials
Do you really need to look for products that say

"antibacterial"? "We're now told by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that washing with antibacterial soaps isn't any better than regular soaps, and the American Medical Association (AMA) says that the frequent use of antibacterial ingredients can promote bacterial resistance to antibiotics," Snow says. "Triclosan, a common antibacterial agent found in many soaps, [may] mess with your hormonal system and thyroid. Most green or environmentally friendly cleaning products don't contain antibacterial agents."
7. More Knowledge of Ingredients
Government regulations don't require ingredients to be listed on any cleaning products. This is another reason Reichert is a strong advocate for making your own products at home, so "you know exactly what the ingredients are in your cleaning recipes." As concerns for health become more prevalent and people become more aware of the harsh effects cleaning chemicals are having, they're going back to basics and looking for greener ways to clean. To hear our experts tell it, the benefits speak for themselves.

Saint John Neumann Regional School DNA Crime Lab Investigation submitted by EARL YOUNG
Following the successful launch of our latest E-Lab, by the 4th and 5th graders, SJNRS Palmerton Campus enthusiastically signed up for another E-Lab with an emphasis on Science and logical deductive reasoning called "DNA Crime Lab Investigation" for the older 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The three classes thoroughly studied and organized pre-mission data led by Homeroom Teacher Donna McLaughlin, such as evidence presented at the scene of the crime, and witnesses' testimonies. Their scenario; Two children, Isabelle Noche and Mark Matthews, were abducted. The teams were to use the evidence at the scene of the crime and eyewitnesses' accountings to narrow the list of twelve main suspects, devise a hypothesis on what transpired at the scene, and ultimately, identify the kidnapper(s) of the two victims. Lab Director Gribben introduced herself to the teams via Skype, and talked with each team leader. The teams were asked to eliminate suspects based on their alibis, and reduced their list to six. There was an interactive lecture about blood and various functions of each; red blood cells

transporting oxygen, white blood cells fighting disease, and platellets clotting blood. Different blood types were discussed; A, B, AB, and O, and how they were positive or negative, and how to test for different blood types. They had samples of blood taken from the suspects, and Lab Director Gribben demonstrated with one suspect how to test their blood type. There were three wells per slide; Wells A, B, and Rh and substanceA, B, and Rh is added to the corresponding wells. If the blood clots in the well, it means that the blood type is not a match. In this example, WellA = No Clotting, Well B = Clotting, Well Rh = No Clotting, therefore the Bloodtype for this suspect is A+. Each team was instructed to determine the bloodtype of each of the remaining six suspects. Additional evidence was presented by Lab Director Gribben, that was found at the crime scene; blood on the door handle to be AB+ and a ransom note with O+. The suspects were down to three. The class's video feed was sent to the Electrophoresis DNA Processing Lab where a Continued on page 26

parents. Everybody's DNA is unique, except in identical twins will have the exact same DNA. considered to be a DNA fingerprint and could be used in comparitive analysis. The three suspects' DNA were tested and compared with the DNA evidence found at the scene. Suspect #3 Grayson was a positive DNA match with the ransom note. Asking for opinions from each team, Lab Director Gribben wished to know who their main suspects were and why? All agreed that Grayson was guilty. Some believed the blood on the door handle was from the victim Isabelle who wasAB+, but evidence suggested more than one kidnapper, by eye-

witnesses' accounts. A news report came in that the children were found at an abandoned green house, rented by one of the suspects, an Erin Delun, though it was not determined that she had anything to do with the kidnapping. The kids were returned safely, and Grayson was arrested. Speaking with the children that participated in this E-Missions E-Lab, they had an overall positive experience, thought it was a fun way to learn science, and would definitely like to do it again this year if possible (hint hint).

Care.IT Opens State-of-the-Art Medical Clinic Inside Weis Markets Store, Schnecksville submitted by SEAN ELWELL
Care.IT Inc. re-opened the formerly CareWorks medical clinic inside the Weis Markets store in Schnecksville on March 24, 2017. The clinic is open five days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Wednesdays and Thursdays, and may be accessed online 24/7. Dr. Frances Fasching, NP is the chief operator of the clinic. Dr. Fasching is a long-time resident of “the Valley” and brings with her 25 years of emergency medicine experience at Lehigh Valley Health Network. “We look forward to being a part of Schnecksville. We're here to build personal relationships and provide critical and affordable health care services to this community,” said Sean Elwell, co-founder and CEO of Care.IT (pronounced “carrot”) and former head of strategy and operations at Aetna. Dr. Fasching notes; “Patients come to Care.IT for respiratory infections, chronic condition management, flu shots, vaccines, sports physicals, occupational medicine, seasonal allergies, functional medicine, women’s issues and more. Right now we’re offering free sports physicals to customers through the end of April. Care.IT is also well
integrated with the local health systems so we can refer patients to specialty care when needed.” Care.IT accepts cash paying customers and most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Services are free to patients with many forms of insurance. The first-of-its-kind Care.IT walk-in clinic in Schnecksville combines traditional, in-person care with virtual care. Patients can visit the clinic in person and opt to have their follow up visit online, at a discounted rate, from their smart phone or home computer. Patients like having the same doctor who treated them in person, follow up with them online — it’s a continuation of their care made convenient. Of course patients can always choose to have their follow up visit in person too. The clinic facilities have been upfitted with stateof-the-art systems that can resolve many of the routine and chronic care conditions that typically end up in emergency rooms for a fraction of the cost. How great You are, how great You are! Then sings my soul, my Savior, God, to thee, How great You are, how great You are! When one wanders in the forest at twilight, One hears the birds twittering in the trees, And then, from high summits one looks at the beauty, And hears the creek, and catches a kiss from the breeze. Refrain When Christ comes, with song(s) of Hallelujah, And takes me home, what joy will fill my heart! Then I will bow so servant-like and humbly, And again say, my God, how great you are! Refrain [Arthur D Graeff (1899 – 1969) was born in Adamstown, Lancaster County and moved with his family to a farm near Charming Forge, Berks County when he was a teenager. After completing high school and graduating from Franklin and Marshall College, he taught at the high school and college levels. (He later earned a master’s and doctor’s degree from Temple while he was teaching in Philadelphia.) He also published several history books, The History of Pennsylvania and Conrad Weiser, Pennsylvania Peacemaker being the most popular, and ran a thrice-weekly column in the Reading Times from July 1938 to March 1969 entitled Scholla aus Pennsylvanish Deitschland (Echoes from Pennsylvania Dutch country). That column, which was written mostly in English, focused on the culture, history and lore of Pennsylvania in general and more specifically of Berks County and of the Dutch. He passed away in Reading on 28 March, 1969.] [ An afternoon thunderstorm and the ensuing tranquility was the inspiration for a Swedish pastor, Carl Boberg (1859 – 1940), to write the poem, O store

Gud (O Great God) in 1885. Three years later it was set in music to an old Swedish melody. In 1907 a wealthy Baltic German Baptist nobleman, Manfred von Glehn (1867-1924), having heard that hymn sung in Estonia among the Swedish minority, translated it into German and published it in the Blankenburger Lieder under the title, Wie Gross bist Du (How great you are). Most likely von Glehn’s version reached Russia for in 1912 Ivan S. Prokhanov (1869–1935), a hymn writer and translator, published his translation, Velikiy Bog (Great God), in a Protestant Hymnbook for the Russian people. But the translation of Boberg’s poem does not end there, for Stuart K. Hine, an English missionary in the Ukraine, found Velikiy Bog in a later edition of that hymnbook and memorized it for use in his services. While serving in the Carpathian mountain region, he found inspiration to translate three verses of that hymn. Later, while back in England in 1948, he finished the forth verse and published “How great Thou art” a year later and that is the version we know today. (Arthur D.Graeff only translated the first, second and forth verses here.) Interestingly, it was the power of a thunderstorm and the beauty of nature pointing one towards God, that inspired Stuart Hine to create his version, just as it had been for Carl Boberg many years earlier.]
