From The Editor’s Desk. I love classic cars and the fact that these machines are muses for so many great works of popular art make them an important part of our culture. My Dad used to do a lot of bodywork for his friends in his garage in Weatherly, PA. He worked on all kinds of cars but it was always extra cool when he had one of his buddy’s cars in the garage – a ’55 Chevy or a tricked-out El Camino pushing 600 horsepower that would rattle the windows when you turned over the ignition and could pull the entire front end of the ground if you popped the clutch. I might have taken it for granted at the time, but I definitely inherited my father’s appreciation for cars (if not his mechanical skills). The American muscle car, to me, represents so much more than just a car, a means of conveyance. A ’69 Chevelle SS or a Selby Mustang are truly works of art. These American beasts, roaring 500 horsepower marvels of Detroit engineering, are muses for directors of great films like The French Connection or Bullitt and even lowbrow

grind house fare like Two Lane Blacktop or Vanishing Point. Musicians from Springsteen to White Zombie sang the praises of suicide machines drag racing on the Jersey turnpike. Every summer around our region you can see these pieces of history on the highways and back roads. Thousands of people flock to car shows like “Wheels of Time” in Macungie to look at cars that collectors and enthusiasts spent lots of money and time perfecting. I hope you enjoy reading this issue celebrating an essential part of Americana as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

Recipe Round-Up

Grilled Cheese Grows Up Think your tastebuds have outgrown the grilled cheese sandwich? Think again. This childhood favorite has evolved into something quite sophisticated. Expert tips and this recipe will help you create the perfect grilled cheese. * Grated cheese melts faster and more evenly than sliced cheese., Use salted butter for the best flavor, and butter the bread, not the pan, Low and slow: Don't rush the cooking process, Cover and cook: Cover the sandwich during the cooking process to lock in the heat. This will help the cheese melt faster and more evenly, Press, flip, repeat. The Wisconsinite Makes 4 sandwiches Ingredients: 1/4 cup cranberry sauce 4 teaspoons Dijon mustard (or use a Wisconsin mustard if you can) 2 tablespoons butter, at room temperature 8 sandwich-size slices dark rye or marble bread 8 ounces Wisconsin Colby Cheese (or use Wisconsin Colby-Jack or Wisconsin Cheddar)

2 ounces Wisconsin Blue Cheese, coarsely crumbled Directions: In a small bowl, mix the cranberry sauce and mustard together. Spread the butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place 4 slices of bread, buttered side down, on your work surface. Spread the cranberry mixture on the bread. Distribute the Colby and crumble the Blue Cheese over the Colby. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat for 2 minutes. Put the sandwiches into the pan, cover, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until the undersides are have darkened and become crisp. Turn the sandwiches, pressing each one firmly with a spatula to flatten slightly. Cover and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the undersides are crisp. Remove the cover, turn the sandwiches once more and press firmly with the spatula once again. Cook for 1 minute, or until the cheese has melted completely. (You might have to peek inside to make sure.) Remove from the pan and let cool 5 minutes. Cut in half and serve.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

Ex NL Coach gets a Second Chance After being let go by Northern Lehigh last summer for allegedly dangerously transporting a player by the Northern Lehigh campus after a summer workout, Rich Oertner is now getting his chance to shine again on the sidelines, in the Mountain Valley Conference with Lehighton High School. The Indians hired Oertner to coach the team and come up with a successful formula to improve their record. The Indians notched only two wins in the last 3 seasons. In the last of his ten seasons with the Bulldogs, Oertner led his squad to a 19-6 record and a Colonial League title. That championship was NL’s and his 3rd in the last 4 seasons. In the 200708 season Coach Oertner won the District 11 2A Championship with NL. Coach Oertner’s overall record is 162-98. To sum it up, Rich Oertner is a great coach.

Although Rich is very happy to be at Lehighton, he considers his time at NL a good experience. “I still hold the parents and players nearest to my heart and the memories that I had were absolutely excellent,” Rich says. He is now putting Northern Lehigh in his past and is focusing on taking the Indians to a whole new level, “We have had a very successful summer so far. The kids have been wonderful. We’ve improved miles this year already. I expect to be competitive next year and we practice at 7 a.m. and the kids are there ready to go,” Rich says of his new team. Mr. Rich Oertner is a great basketball mind. As a student at NL and a former basketball player for the school, I had a chance to admire his basketball I.Q. first-hand. Coach Oertner has tremendous respect in the basketball community and really deserves this second chance at coaching. I wish him all the luck as he embarks on another chapter in his career. I’m sure he will rebound and have tons of success in Lehighton. Tyler Trumbauer, former writer for the Northern Lehigh Middle School Bulldog Bark is going to be a Sophomore at Northern Lehigh High School where he will be a writer for the paper in the Fall. His column Extra Point will be a regular feature in the Gazette. He can be reached at extrapoint@townandcountrygazette.com.

Picking The Perfect Ride: Four Tips To Find The Best Car For You “If my van doesn’t start, I’m in trouble,” says Leanne Kocsis, a working mom whose family of six relies on having a vehicle. It must run reliably, accommodate her family, keep them safe and be fuel efficient. And, the loan payments can’t rob their savings. Whether you’re a soccer mom or a jet-setter, choosing the right vehicle isn’t something to take lightly. There is more to buying a car than the sticker price or the way it looks. Doing your research will help you save but will also help you pick the best car for your needs. Savvy shoppers get the most for their money by weighing all options in advance. Start your search with these factors in mind. 1. Fuel economy Soaring gas prices increase demand for fuel-efficient vehicles. But, carefully consider whether you drive enough to make fuel economy important. Double-check your math for hybrid vehicles. Unless you’re a road warrior, a hybrid’s fuel savings may not offset the higher purchase price. Continued on Page 23

I must tell you about it. You know last week Sall and I decided we wanted to celebrate on Saturday and we did, too. We sent out nearly two hundred invitations and that “please omit flowers” that was printed underneath almost got me in trouble. One of Sall’s brothers, Amos Hammerhead, can’t read too good and when he saw “please omit flowers”, he thought it was my funeral notice. He and his wife and thirteen children were all crying when they came and they all had handkerchiefs with black borders and when I opened the door Amos was so scared that he did two backward summersaults before he could stop himself. We soon had these things explained. Continued on Page 22

Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 18 Maybe you are wondering why we wanted that notice put there, right? Well I will tell you why. I was afraid the people would all bring flowers for presents and if I put that under there they would bring something that was worthwhile. Well Mike Dickkup (an uncle to my brother Jeremiah Grosskup) is a little slow to pay his things and almost every day he gets a letter that says “Please Remit.” Now when he read the invitation he read something like this, “Please Remit Flowers” and he came with a wheelbarrow full. It took about an hour to explain that. I addressed Mose Biffelbay’s invitation wrong and of course the letter ended up in the “Dead Letter Office.” There they opened it and found the right address and sent him the letter, but on the letter in big black letters they had printed “Dead Letter: and when Mose got this out of the mail box he got so anxious that he went into convulsions and couldn’t come. Well, the people came from far and wide. They came with teams, automobiles, some walked, two came with balloons and one airplane, by heck. The people from Littleback were nearly carzy till the day was over. We borrowed all the horse stables in Littleback and some horses we had to lock in people’s parlors. We had to put five in Levi Souflodel’s cider-cellar. More next week. Yours very truly, Jonas Grosskup Die Barrig Barbie

data. Be sure to also check used-car listings. If the vehicle you’re considering tends to sell for much less than similar models, that might indicate poor performance. 4. Insurance costs Your age, where you live, and how you drive affect your insurance premiums. But your car makes a difference too. You might pay more to insure a vehicle that has been involved in more accidents, causes more damage, costs more to repair or is stolen more frequently than other models.

“Now that I have flagged Thee, lift up my feet from the road of life and plant them safely on the deck of the train of salvation. Let me use the safety-lamp of prudence, make all couplings with the link of love, let my hand-lamp be the Bible, and keep all switches closed that lead off the main line into the sidings with blind ends. Have every semaphore white along the line of hope, that I may make the run of life without stopping. Give me the Ten Commandments as a working-card, and when I have finished the run on scheduletime and pulled into the terminal, may Thou, superintendent of the universe, say, Well done, good and faithful servant; come into the general office to sign the pay-roll and receive your check for happiness.”

Karson

Nala Pit Bull Terrier: An adoptable dog in Bethlehem, PA Medium • Baby Female Nala was picked up as a stray in Palmer Township. She was held in the police holding pen for 10 days. No one claimed her. She had a collar on, with a tag, that just said "NALA" no contact info, no phone number, nothing. It seemed like someone just dumped her. She is a beautiful girl, about 8 months old. She is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and on prevention. She can play rough with other dogs, but has not shown any aggression. She would do great with older children, and another dog who could keep up with her. She would also do great as the only pet in a very active family. She will chase cats if given the chance, but also listens very well to "NO!". Nala is still a pup and she will need to continue to work on training, and leash manners. She is a show stopper with her beautiful markings, and will make someone very happy. Spayed/Neutered • Up-to-date with routine shots • House trained Primary colors: White or Cream, Brindle Sunrays Pit Bull Rescue, Bethlehem Contact info for Sunrays Email: SunraysPitBulls@aol.com Website: www.sunrayspitbulls.com

Karson is a sweet gentle soul. He is a little timid, but loves to meet and greet people as they come in. Karson is getting along great with my four other dogs, and doesn't pay a whole lot of attention to the cats in our house. He is house broken, he doesn't bark, and doesn't chew anything except dog toys. He loves water and swimming in the lake. Karson is an awesome dog. I can't imagine why his previous owners haven't come in to claim him. His new owners will be very lucky to make him part of their family. He is 22lbs. run-down Classic Car Movies We can’t all afford a corvette and a gas-guzzling big-block Mustang might not be the most practical family vehicle, but we can still get our fast carfix with some movie escapism. Here are some adrenaline fueled car movie classics: Thunder Road (1958) – This is one of the earlier car movies starring Robert Mitchum as a Korean War veteran trying to take over the family moonshine business while evading the law. All of the cars in the film, including Mitchum’s 1951 Ford, were sold to the movie’s producers by actual bootleggers so they could buy newer, faster cars to outrun the cops while transporting their illicit white lightening booze.

Bullitt (1968) – What makes a better car chase than a sinister black 1970 Dodge Charger roaring through the streets of San Francisco with an iconic 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 fastback driven by the ultimate movie tough-guy Steve McQueen gaining in it’s rearview mirror? Not too much, Bullitt’s chase scene is one of the best ever committed to celluloid. The Mustang’s unscripted reverse burnout during the chase was the result of McQueen accidentally missing a turn (Yes, McQueen was actually driving the car during many of the chase scenes, how many Hollywood actors would even try that these days?).

Vanishing Point (1971) – A cult movie from the heyday of great car chase movies like Two-Lane Blacktop and Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, Vanishing Point is the best of the bunch. The plot, really just an excuse to pack as many crazy car antics in two-hours as possible, involves a car delivery driver making a bet that he can drive a 1970 Dodge Challenger from Colorado to San Francisco in less than 15 hours. Throw in a blind radio DJ, hitchhikers and some motorcycle cops and that’s the formula for an alltime car chase classic. Death Proof (2007) – Death Proof is Quentin Tarantino’s loving homage to cult chase movies from the 1970s with a horror twist. Kurt Russell stars as Stuntman Mike, a sadistic serial killer who uses a 1970 Dodge Challenger, a nod to Vanishing Point, to off his victims. The first half of the film is a little slow, with plenty of trademark Tarantino dialogue and a good performance from Russell. However, once the characters get out on the open road the throttle is wide open with the best, CGI-free, car chase cinematography in years.

In the late 1800’s, George Dieter started the business as a blacksmith shop to service area farmers. Circa 1900 it was developed into an iron foundry and ownership and operations were taken over by David Dieter. The foundry manufactured many different cast iron items over the years. In 1943 most of the foundry burned down. It was rebuilt in 1944 and continued in operation until it was sold in 1987 due to a strike and changing environmental laws and emission monitoring. Bethany Wesleyan Church purchased the property in December, 2008, from Barrett Trucking. The church was able to use the building for two years for the annual GIANT YARD SALE held over the July 4th holiday. The parking lot was also a great help to alleviate Bethany’s overflow parking issues. On July 18, 2011, demolition began on the old

Now most of the debris has been hauled away or recycled and Bethany is looking forward to the future use of this space, a new 1200 seat auditorium. Although the foundry was part of Cherryville’s landscape for a very long time, we at Bethany hope that you will embrace our vision of a beautiful, modern facility that will be user-friendly to this community for many years to come. A new meaning to Welcome Home

A box of nails… $10. A new house for a wounded veteran… $300,000. A community coming together to build the house… priceless. Despite the unforgiving heat of the morning on Friday, July 22, local contractors and family helped Army SPC Robert J. Kislow III raise the first wall of his new house in Danielsville, Pa. The day marked the beginning of a new life for Kislow. Thursday night he entered into fatherhood with the birth of his son; and within the next four months he will be welcomed into a house of his own. The house will be of no cost to Kislow thanks to support and donations of time, money and supplies from individuals, private donors and corporate sponsors. Anything not covered by donations is provided for by Homes For Our Troops. Founded in 2004 by John Gonsalves, the nonprofit organization builds or adapts homes for veterans across the country whose mobility was severely impacted while fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. HFOT has already completed more than 100 projects and are hoping for 100 more. A strong sense of patriotism and respect filled the job site at 8:30 a.m. as the motorcycles, fire trucks and police cars escorted Kislow to the opening ceremony. Kislow had trouble finding the words to thank everyone who came out to support not only the project, but also the start of his new life. The tears welling in his eyes as well as the eyes of others made words unnecessary; the gratitude is mutual. “It feels good to be an American,” said Kislow’s mother, Kathy Kislow, as she explained how overwhelming it was to see so many volunteers. “The Titanic was built by professionals; Noah’s Ark was built by volunteers,” HFOT Veteran Liaison Larry Gill reminded the crew before more than 100 volunteers in red shirts scattered the job site to kick off the exterior construction. Whether they were There was barely a dry eye in the involved in the construction crowd as Kislow made his way to the or keeping the workers fed podium for the opening ceremony. and hydrated, the volunteers made the Build Brigade a success. However, without donations, the volunteers would have nothing to work with. After hearing about Kislow and the project on CAT Country 96, Mike Kemmerer of Blue Valley Builders, Inc. offered his expertise to HFOT. According to Kemmerer’s wife, Leslie, he and other workers have been preparing the job site for the Build Brigade for the past several months. Leslie brought her children to the job site because she wanted them to see what their dad was doing for a local veteran. She along with anyone walking around the site will tell you that any amount of time or dollar donated makes a difference. The difference made by everyone’s dedication to the project will not end after the Build Brigade or even after the house is finished, it will only just begin. Gill said that the Build Brigade is an attempt to construct the entire weather-tight exterior of the house over the span of a weekend.

From this point on he said it could take 90 to 120 days for the house to be “Key Ceremony” ready. Gill said that this ceremony is his favorite part of the whole process because he is able to say “welcome home” and hand over a key to something a veteran call his or her own. Troops hear the words “welcome home” when they return from war, but for men and women such as Kislow, who could otherwise never afford a house or Kislow was welcomed home as friends and family helped to raise the threshold.

Within half an hour the threshold was joined by a number of other walls.

the renovations needed to make it accessible, the words take on a whole new meaning when HFOT steps in. It would have been a life-long struggle to come up with the money for a house said Kislow. His grandparents knew that and secretly went through the strict application process in order to prove Kislow’s eligibility for a house. Kislow was on his first deployment in 2005 when he was shot five times while searching out Taliban forces in the mountains near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. He continued to engage in combat until he was able to get medical attention. The damage done to his leg led to its amputation. While Kislow is not confined to a wheelchair, he does admit to over exerting himself. He said he can withstand eight hours on his prosthetic leg. However, when he comes home, he needs a place that is wheelchair accessible throughout- something his grandparent’s house is not.

“It feels good to be an American” - Kathy Kislow

HFOT helps to eliminate many of the mobility restrictions for injured veterans. Kislow said he wants to be able to give to others what he has received. Once the house is complete Kislow plans to kick the fundraising into full force. He said he will have more time to devote to finding ways to raise money once he no longer has to worry about a house. Kislow hopes to raise $100,000 during the next two years for other veterans. While Kislow is ready to make a difference in someone else’s life, there are still donations needed to help make a difference in his. If you would like to learn more about the project and what you can do to help with it, visit www.homesforourtroops.org/kislow.

Radisson hotel and Conference Center in King of Prussia from July 14 –17, 2011. This was a very special convention for Post 16 as we supported our candidate Mark W. Queen for Dept. Eastern Vice Commander 2011-2012. Friends and family were on hand to see Mark get elected and installed in this high American Legion Office. Mark is a retired Sgt. Major from the US Army. He is married to Susan (Neff) Queen for 42 years. They have two daughters; Tammy and March, who are both active in the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16. Mark is a graduate of Thaddeus Stevens Trade School, Lancaster, where h learned the machinist trade. This occupation served him well until his retirement in 2007. Mark has been an active member of Post 16 for over forty-five years and has held most post offices, including serving three times as Commander of Post Adjutant for twenty-two years. For the past six years, he has served as Adjutant of Lehigh Country Council American Legion. From 2008 to 2010, Mark was elected to Department of Pennsylvania’s 14th District Commander, representing Lehigh and Berks counties. For the past year, he served as Adjutant to Eastern Vice Commander Joseph Cocco. In his new role, Mark will be serving with other newly elected officers as follows: Commander – Kerrie G. Gill Sr., Central Section, Vice Commander – Daniel W. Dreese and Western Section Vice Commander Dennis Haas. We are proud of Mark’s election to the highest department office any legionnaire from Post 16 has held in our ninety-two year history. Good luck on your new adventure Mark!

First Annual Palmerton Area Library Open – to Keep the Library Open!

With the large cuts that continue plaque our community libraries, the Palmerton Area Library Board of Directors were looking for a new and exciting idea to raise money to help keep the library open. And they found one… the PAL will be sponsoring a golf tournament with all proceeds going to the general fund of the Library. Many sponsors have already signed on to help with the project including hole sponsors as well as gold, silver, and bronze sponsors. The tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 at the Blue Ridge Country Club in Palmerton. There will be many prizes, a dinner buffet, a silent auction and a basket auction. Non-golfers may sign up for just the dinner and enjoy the food and other activities. The library is currently looking for volunteers to help on the day of the tournament and golfers to participate in the tournament. The PAL is hoping that this event will be successful and become an annual event. For more information about this golf event, stop in at the library and pick up a registration form or call the library at 610-8263424. Help keep the library open!

A small, overgrown graveyard known for decades by long-time Berlinsville area residents as an “old Indian cemetery” and perhaps one of the earliest burial grounds of Lehigh Township, has recently been transferred to Lehigh Township Historical Society. The Lehigh Township Historical Society has pursued a variety of research procedures to determine the graveyard’s early history. Monument Commemorated. As part of the 100th Anniversary of the Vigilant Fire Company’s Firemen’s Monument, a wooden replica of the monument has been commissioned. The replica depicts the firemen’s monument located in the Union Cemetery. The sale of the replicas this year will benefit community projects by Northern Lehigh Future Focus and the Vigilant Fire Company’s monument restoration fund.

America’s Heritage

Celebrating 110 Years Of The Race That Changed Everything (NAPSI)—There’s more to the old adage “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” than many people realize. For example, consider the automobile pioneer Henry Ford. For him, the motto was quite appropriate, because while on his way to creating one of the most successful automobile companies in the world, he suffered his share of setbacks that included the failure of the Detroit Automobile Company in January 1901. He was 38 years old, married with one son and, after losing $86,000 in the failed venture, he was broke. He had to move in with his father, William, and plan the next move toward achieving his dream of owning a car company. “He knew that racing grabbed the public imagination and it just so happened that one of the biggest races in the country was being planned practically in Henry Ford’s backyard,” recalled Edsel B. Ford II.“I don’t think it was my great-grandfather’s intention to ever win this race. He couldn’t afford to hire anyone, so he had to drive his own car. He had never raced before and he was up against the greatest driver in the country.” That greatest driver, Alexander Winton, proved to be Ford’s lone competition on Oct. 10, 1901 as 8,000

fans came to the Detroit Driving Club to watch. All the other competitors dropped out when their vehicles failed to start, so the main event essentially became a 10-lap match race with the winner receiving $1,000. Even though Winton jumped to a big early lead, Ford slowly began to close the gap. As the cars raced past the front stretch grandstand on the eighth lap, Winton’s car began to sputter and Ford took the lead for good in front of a cheering crowd. “It was a thrilling moment. It was an historic moment and a moment that identified Henry Ford as a winner worth watching,” said Edsel Ford. “After he drove into the winner’s circle, a great crowd of spectators crowded him and shouted that they were willing to back him in any venture that involved wheels.” Now, Ford Racing is celebrating that momentous day by highlighting great moments in its storied history at www.fordracing110.com. In addition, fans can learn about the ongoing search for the trophy Ford won that day—a cut-glass punch bowl that was sold at auction following his death in 1947. Now, Edsel Ford wants it back. He launched a search 10 years ago but failed to find it. So for a Ford of today, it’s time to try, try again.

Book Review

GoneAway Into the Land by Jeffrey B. Allen Author: Jeffrey B. Allen
Publisher: Strategic Book Publishing (October 1, 2009)
ISBN-10: 160860859X
ISBN-13: 978-1608608591

Using his own unique style and voice, Jeffrey B. Allen with GoneAway Into the Land has really stretched the limits of the traditional fantasy novel. Shifting in and out of fantasy, Allen cleverly intertwines the theme of child and spousal abuse with a land of the unknown. The magic that he has created does manage to make sense to the reader, although at times I must admit I was a trifle confused with the multitude of bizarre quirky characters and the inventiveness of their language. This ambitious yarn follows twelve-year old John Greber who, along with his mother Ellie, is the object of abuse at the hands of John’s father whom he names “The Beast.” One day, “The Beast” abandons John and his mother while at the same time snatching away John’s six-year old sister Marny. John vows to seek revenge, confront his repulsive father, and rescue his sister Marny. As we discover, all of this transpires during a time where John and his mother will be indirectly involved in a Civil War that has far reaching repercussions that may lead to the destruction of the world. What I found quite striking about GoneAway Into the Land is Allen’s

skilful narrative pacing in revealing bit-by-bit the various themes to the reader and permitting him or her to slowly discover it. Another plus is that Allen does not resort to is some kind of magic wherein he relies on the fantasy aspect in order to enable John to break out of a thorny situation by manufacturing a super-duper miraculous spell that the reader never even knew about. With its deftly constructed plot, episodic structure, a lovable hero, interesting secondary characters, and a dash of suspense, Allen’s fascinating debut novel is a haunting tale that jolts along at its own pace. Moreover, Allen’s writing is extremely powerful particularly his imagery and masterful descriptions such as when John meets up with “The Beast.” And when all's said and done, we have a novel that is not only amazingly fitting for our times, but one that is rich and rewarding for anyone, young or old, wishing to ponder over insightful questions pertaining to our existence and journey through life. No doubt, I am sure Allen had a great deal of fun writing this novel and I am certain readers will likewise find a great deal of fun in reading this provocative fantasy novel.
