Dear Louisa, We have a very large family and we enjoy getting together during the holi- days and we have worked out our plans so that is not one person’s responsibility. The only thing that worries me is the gifts. This part of the occasion has be- come a headache when there are so many relatives to shop for. Don’t you think it would be better if we cut our gifts altogether? --Shopper--Ga. Dear Shopper: Many large families continue giving to one another but they limit the cost and the number of gifts. One family I know confines their giving to the children in the family. I don’t think that you would be quite as happy Christmas Day if you cut out giving altogether. --Louisa.

2.This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3.And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. 4.And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David. 5.to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6.And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. 7.And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8.And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9.And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10.And the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; 11.for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12.And this shall be a sign to you: you will find the babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13.And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14.“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is
pleased!” 15.When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16.And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17.And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; 18.and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19.But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20.And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. -R.S.V. Christmas at St. Nicholas Church
“O Come, All Ye Faithful!” Think of these words as more than the beginning of a familiar Christmas carol. Run the words of the first verse through your mind, and see that “O Come, All Ye Faithful” is truly an invitation to enter into the real meaning of Christmas. The Catholic parish of St. Nicholas echoes that invitation and encourages all Christians to celebrate the Nativity of the Lord Jesus and to make worship the center of their Christmas celebration. St. Nicholas welcomes those who have been away from church, visitors to our area, and all who would like to celebrate with our parish during this blessed season. To prepare spiritually for Christmas, Msgr. Thomas Derzack, pastor, encourages receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confessions are scheduled for Saturday, December 22 at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Christmas Eve masses are at 4, 6 and 11 p.m. Christmas Day Masses will be at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. New Year’s Eve mass is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., and New Year’s Day masses will be at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. St. Nicholas Church is located in Berlinsville on Route 946 at the corner of Oak Road. More information is available at St. Nicholas Walnutport. parishesonline.com, or by calling the rectory at 610-767-3107. Parishioners of St. Nick’s wish all a peace filled and blessed Christmas.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Wrestling Preview
Northampton- Coach: Seth Lisa Preview: Northampton had a moderately successful 2011-12 season that ended with them making an appearance and an early exit in the district duals. The K-Kids want to better their finish from last season, but according to head coach, Seth Lisa, staying healthy and learning from mistakes will need to happen to achieve that. Lisa told me in an interview last week that he sees a few guys having successful individual seasons that will help the team, “Zach Valley, a returning state place winner. Michael Sheetz, Bobby Fehr and Paul Hetrick, all of whom are regional qualifiers with a lot of experience, should contribute greatly. They all do a great job in the practice room and they all have high expectations for themselves.” Northampton had a decent year last season and should see the same success this season. I don’t think they will break through to the upper echelon of the wrestling world, but the K-Kids will be competitive and in the hunt for some championships this season.

Parkland- Coach: Ryan Nunamaker Preview: Parkland’s 2011-12 team season was very successful as it included a trip to the district final and an appearance in the state playoffs. Head coach Ryan Nunamaker is expecting the same postseason path for the Trojans as they are returning a plethora of varsity starters and have a few promising freshman. Nunamaker told me in an e-mail last week about his team’s specific goals for this winter,“[We want] to win a district and regional Championship and send as many guys as possible to the state tournament. We want to qualify for the dual meet state tournament and place in the top four.” He continued, “Our main goal is for each wrestler to work hard every day and improve each week and learn from [their] mistakes.” Parkland had a really great season last year and is on the path to outdo themselves this winter. Expect great things from the Trojans as they will go far in leagues, districts and possibly even states while collecting some hardware along the way. Northern Lehigh- Coach: Todd Herzog Preview: By Northern Lehigh standards, the Bulldogs are coming off a rough season. Being sub .500 in the Colonial League and just squeezing in to the district tournament is not what Northern Lehigh and head coach, Todd Herzog, are accustomed to. Despite that mediocre season Herzog is seeing some positives, “I see continued improvement from where we ended the season last year. We have several wrestlers back in the lineup who now have a considerable amount of varsity experience who should be major contributors to the outcome of matches this year.” One highlight from last winter for the Bulldogs was the individual season of Ty Herzog, Todd Herzog’s son. Last season was Ty’s junior year and he finished 31-10 and placed 8th in the state tournament. He is just 11 wins shy of becoming NL’s 23rd wrestler with at least 100 wins in their career. With a nice sized roster and covering most weight classes, expect Ty and the Bulldogs to be successful this winter Lehighton- Coach: Dan Williams Preview: Lehighton had a successful team season last winter as they qualified for districts, but were ousted by Palmerton. With losing six seniors to graduation, two of which were individual state qualifiers and 100 match winners, head coach Daniel Williams, admitted to me, “We are in a rebuilding year.” Williams is still maintaining the team goal

of having the Indians reach the team district tournament again even with a younger team. He sees that inexperience as an obstacle, but also a positive, “Youth and inexperience will be our biggest challenge. But with youth and inexperience there is a very large upside and the ability to reach potential as the young and inexperienced wrestlers get better each week throughout the year.”It is tough to forecast the Indians season because of that youth. However, I feel they will decline a little from last year’s team and fall back to the middle of the pack in the Mountain Valley Conference and District 11. Palmerton- Coach: David Lavin Preview: The Blue Bombers are notorious for exceling in wrestling. Last season was no different as Palmerton, led by head coach, David Lavin, finished third in the Colonial League and notched a win in the district duals. Lavin told me that although last year was great, this year could be better, “We think we can do better than we did last year, but in order to be league champions or district champions you need to look at one match at a time. We're looking at every match as an opportunity to put ourselves in the right position and an opportunity to improve our wrestlers and build them into champions.” Lavin also told me that his team is a little different than most years as he has a good mix of talented, experienced wrestlers and younger, talented wrestlers. He says balance is key for his squad, “Balance in our lineup is very important. We are trying to continue to develop each wrestler as much as possible while still putting ourselves in the position to win matches.” Lavin and the Blue Bombers are setting their
Page 57
sights on making return trips to the league and district playoffs this season. The Bombers have the wrestlers capable of making that plausible for Palmerton. If they can get some results from those more inexperienced wrestlers, this year will be a good one for Palmerton. NorthwesternCoach: Jim Moll Preview: Northwestern wasn’t too successful last season. Only achieving one win in the Colonial League defines the struggle the Tigers had. According to head coach, Jim Moll, the tide will turn this winter at Northwestern, “I do see more wins this year in our league schedule. With only eight weight classes filled last season we were behind going into every match. We kept our focus on our performance and improving as the season went on. This year we are a young team with a handful of freshman starters, and only two seniors. We will fill 11 or 12 of the weight classes, so I expect us to be in a more matches than we were last year.” Moll also mentioned the two seniors, Michael Ortiz and Mitch Evans, when he was discussing leadership on his squad in an e-mail last week. He feels those two will lead the way behind some freshman that will rise to the occasion. There is a lot of optimism in New Tripoli surrounding the wrestling team this winter. It is definitely a rebuilding season as they finished in the basement last year. The question will be how high can they build this team? I believe that there will be a lot of improvement this winter, but don’t expect a title contender quite yet.
