From The Editor’s Desk. This issue is a professional milestone for me. It marks my one-year anniversary working for the Town & Country Gazette. I hope that all of you have enjoyed the past 24 issues that I’ve had a hand in. I’m originally from Northeast PA, and wasn’t really familiar with the Lehigh Twp. area until I moved to Lehighton with my girlfriend and began looking for work closer to home. Working out of our office on Rt. 248 in Walnutport has been a great introduction to a lot of interesting local people, great scenic areas around the Lehigh Gap and the Walnutport Canal and, especially, a lot of awesome family-owned restaurants and other small businesses that are really the heart of our area’s small-town culture. Recently, a local woman dropped off her collection of Town & Country Gazettes at our office dating all the way back to the mid-’80s. Some of the businesses that advertised decades ago still run ads with us. I recognized many of the last names in the articles as family members of people that I’ve met in my travels throughout the area. I get calls from people in nursing homes that have been reading the Gazette for years and

want to know where the heck the Touch of Dutch or Joke Column was last issue? Or, in a recent case, a woman who wanted to know if I knew the difference between a mule and a horse because I misidentified the Palmerton Mule in our Good Eye contest. I love hearing from people, positive or negative, because I know they’re paying attention. I love being involved with something that, in some small way, is part of the local culture and helps bring the community together. So, thanks everyone for supporting our publication. I also wanted to thank my coworkers who work hard to get the Gazette to print and out to distributors. Alice and Paul for hiring me a year ago even though I was 15 minutes late for my interview. Tony and the girls in Palmer for doing tons of design work and accommodating all of my edits and changes, however annoying and last minute they are. Donna for her keen eye. Dave and Monroe who get up early on Wednesdays and make sure the Gazette makes it into our reader’s hands. Tyler and the design interns who do great work every issue. I’m forgetting people, but you get the idea. I hope the next 24 issues will be even better and remember to contact me with any feedback you guys have.

Make Your ‘I Do’ Last Forever: Don’t Let Your Wedding Rings Slip To The Bottom Of Your List (NU) - In between the guest list, the flowers and the perfect three-tier cake, it can be hard to find time to shop for your wedding rings. However, it is important to remember that most of the wed- ding details are fleeting and gone after a few hours of enjoyment, while your rings are enjoyed forever. So, whether you are having a smaller gathering or a more traditional affair, this important to-do on your event checklist should not be overlooked, especially since your rings mark your commitment to one another and will last a lifetime. Jewelry and style expert Michael O’Connor has a few tips that are sure to help you find matrimonial bliss when it comes to ring selection: • Create a budget. There are many details to consider when planning a wedding that can quickly drain your budget. It is important to set aside money for a lifelong symbol like your wedding bands. Not sure how much to budget? Consider that in 2006, couples spent an average of $2,079 on wedding bands, according to the CN American Wedding Study. And since the age-old rule for purchasing an engagement ring is to spend two months salary, plan to spend one month’s salary for the two wedding bands. Check out the “Budget Calculator” at www.The- Knot.com.

• Shop together. It is a good idea to shop for rings together. In fact, 80 percent of couples do, which isn’t a surprise since your rings, which don’t have to match, should reflect your personal styles and tastes. • Plan ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute to go shopping for your wedding bands, they’re simply too important. Plan to start shopping for your rings six months prior to your “I do’s.” Not only do you need time to research and shop, but you also need to allot time for custom orders, sizing and engraving. • Invest in quality. Because you want your ring to last a lifetime, it is important to put thought into the quality of metal you choose. Platinum 950 is the most durable pre- cious metal and will last a lifetime. It’s 30 times more rare than gold, and for wedding bands set with diamonds, its natural whiteness will ensure the diamonds sparkle and stay secure. It is no wonder that Hollywood’s A-list designers such as Tacori, DeBeers, Ritani and Kwiat are all choosing Platinum in their designs. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a star to own a Platinum ring. Platinum engage- ment and Continued on Page 16

Buck Challenge

Buck fever was still alive at the Blue Mountain Fish & Game when they held its second annual Buck Challenge Banquet on February 4, 2012. Grand prize winner, Brian Ahner, scored and won with his 12-point buck. Three junior hunters (all winners) Aleah Nothstein, Troy Freeby, and Jordan Rhodes each scored a buck and went home with a plaque and several prizes. With seventytwo contestants in this year’s Buck Challenge and only ten adult hunters taking a buck...the random draw for a hunting trip to Benedicta Lodge Sporting Camps located in Maine, had great odds with Ed Tretiak also a winner. The 2012-2013 Buck Challenge will begin this September 29, 2012 and end January 26, 2013 (same as the PA hunting season). Anyone Interested in entering the contest may contact 610-767-8004 or Email buckchellenge@aol.com. To learn more visit http:// bluemtfishgame.webs.com.

Jack is a total love, he is many volunteers favorite as he walks so well on the leash, and is calm and loving. However he is not a big fan of cats so no homes with cats please. He loves to go for walks but is fine hanging out as well! He's truly a great dog who deserves another chance at a wonderful home. He would be very grateful for that! Come and meet me and my friends. Can't wait to meet you and fall in looooooove!! Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

Basketball Postseason

It is the end of February, which means the regular season of varsity basketball has come to an end. The varsity basketball playoffs are about to start up. I have compiled a few words about each team that will be involved in the postseason action in the Lehigh Valley Conference and the Colonial League. The LVC’s semi-finals for boys will be on February 14 and February 15 for girls. The championship games are February 17. All games will be at William Allen High School. The CL’s semi-finals will be for girls on February 14 for girls and February 15 for boys. The championship games will be on the February 17. The semi-finals games will be at Catasauqua High School. The championship games will be held at Freedom High School. District 11’s playoff will start next week. The girls’ bracket commences on February 21 and the boys’ bracket kicks off on February 22. Boys Basketball Northern Lehigh: The Bulldogs had a very successful regular season. They finished strong

Page 27

with a 19-3 overall record and a 13-3 record in the Colonial League. All those victories got NL in to the league and district playoffs. I asked one of their big men, junior Lucas Pierce, what they need to do to win some championships, “I think in order to win leagues we need to really focus on playing better defense for all four quarters and we need to come out in the second half fired up... when we come out and play to [the best of] our ability we are a tough team to beat.” Pierce is right on point in his statement. If the Bulldogs come out with intensity for four straight quarters they will stay with their opponents and notch some wins on their way to a title run. Parkland: The Trojans have been virtually unstoppable this winter. They have only lost four games the entire season. That constant success has earned them the #3 seed in the LVC playoffs. Also, these boys will be competing at the AAAA level of the District 11 playoffs. Junior Austin Beidelman has been a pleasant surprise for Parkland. Beidelman has become a dependable scorer and a trustworthy player during crunch time. Parkland is not just an elite team in the LVC, but in the whole Lehigh Valley area. Expect them to be there when trophies are being handed out. Continued on Page 36

Lenten Services at St. Nicholas Parish

Ash Wednesday falls on February 22 this year. The Old Testament “Reading of the Day” for Ash Wednesday comes from the prophet, Joel. He is clearly trying to get our attention. “Blow the trumpet… Call an assembly, gather the people, notify the congregation…” His message is that the Lord is calling. “Now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart!” The Catholic parish of St. Nicholas extends this same invitation. Join us on Ash Wednesday and begin the journey through Lent. Masses are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. A prayer service will be held at noon. Ashes, a sign of repentance and a desire to turn one’s heart and life to the Lord, will be distributed at both the masses and the noon prayer service. All are welcome. During the remaining Wednesdays of Lent, the church will be open at 6:30 p.m. for personal prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. During that time, Msgr. Thomas Durzak will be available to hear confessions. Stations of

the Cross, a meditation on our Lord’s passion, will follow at 7 p.m. Daily mass is at 8:30 each weekday morning. St. Nicholas Church is located at the corner of Route 946 and Oak Road in Berlinsville. Call 610-767-3107 or visit www. StNicholasWalnutport.ParishesOnLine.com.

Broken Hearts

Max I. Reich saw a repair shop in the window of which was a sign reading: "We mend everything except broken hearts." When Mr. Reich entered, a young Jewess came forward to serve him and he said: "I saw your sign, and want to ask what you do with people who have broken hearts." "Oh!" she said: "We send them to the hospital." "You are a Jewess, are you not?" responded Mr. Reich, "Did you ever read Isaiah 57:15? 'For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.' And," continued Mr. Reich, "there was also He who read Isaiah 61:1, in his hometown synagogue at Nazareth. The verse contains the words 'He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted.' And," said Mr. Reich, "the Messiah added, 'This day is this scripture fulfilled.'" Yes, Jesus Christ is the healer of broken hearts! Perhaps you have experienced the pain and hurt of a broken heart and it seems the future holds nothing for you. Maybe you have even considered suicide during some dark and hopeless moment. I have good news for you—the Lord is actually closer to you because of your broken heart! The Bible says, "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit" (Psalm 34:18). It also says, "He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). We are assured that “a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” (Psalm 51:17). I urge you to let Jesus heal your broken heart! In Matthew 11:28 He promises, "Come unto me, all ye that…are heavy laden, and I will give you rest!" Just go to Him in sincere prayer, humbly ask Him to forgive your sins, and He will mend your broken heart!

But you could write something about it like an afterthought.” “What can I say about a donut with a hole in the middle? Why don’t you write something?” “I don’t have time,” she moaned, “and I did write one for you before. Extra Point Continued from Page 27 Girls Basketball Northampton: The Konkrete Kids are back in postseason play with a 19-3 overall record and a 12-2 league record. Northampton is always a contender in the girl’s basketball realm as they compete every year. Although the success is the same, head coach Jeff Jacksits told me the team is not, “We are a different type of team this year. We are a lot faster. We do a lot more running and pressure defense...We basically live off of our defense.” Jacksits is an experienced coach and knows how to guide teams deep into the playoffs. If these girls manage to shut down their opponents they can skate their way to some championship games this postseason. Northwestern: Elated. That is the word to describe the Northwestern girls basketball team right now. The lady tigers are making their return to the postseason after notching a 15-7 record overall and an 11-5 record in the Colonial League. Head coach Chris Deutsch is bringing his team to the league playoffs for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Deutsch expressed to me his excitement, “...This is not about me as a coach or our coaching staff. This is about the girls. It was their goal to get back [to the playoffs]. They wanted

to get Northwestern back on the map and they did that. We are going to have a shot.”The attitude and talent of this team could propel them to a championship this postseason. Palmerton: With a 13-9 overall record the lady Blue Bombers qualified for the District 11 AAA playoffs. Unfortunately, they only mounted an 8-8 league record and failed to make the CL playoffs. This team is led by senior Kelsey Hay who in their 22 regular season games, notched a double-digit amount of points in 20 of them. This roster of girls is full of scorers that complement Hay. Expect them to out hustle and out score their opponents in the districts. Northern Lehigh: The lady Bulldogs had a roller coaster season. They could never really find their comfort zone. They finished the regular season with an 11-11 overall record and 7-9 record in the CL. Those records failed to qualify them for the league tournament, but they did make the District 11 AA playoffs. Sophomore starting forward, Rachel Hams, believes the team’s defense is what will help them in districts, “...one of our strengths is our defense. It definitely helps that we have Aimee [Oertner] in the back row to help block shots.” This team has the potential to make a run in districts. We just don’t know what team will show up. Parkland: Parkland’s 14-8 overall record is very good. The problem is there are some other very talented teams in the LVC. Central Catholic, Northampton, Bethlehem Catholic and Emmaus all had better overall records than the Trojans. Competing with those fierce schools left this squad out of the LVC playoffs. The girls will come in to districts with confidence after a win over LVC playoff team, Whitehall, to end their regular season. They can take advantage of not being in the league playoffs by getting rest from constant game action. Don’t be surprised if the girls put together a string of wins and end up in the district championship game

J&J Coins – Palmerton Owner: Joseph Schock Opened: September 2010 Location: We are located at 631 Delaware Avenue in Palmerton. Hours: Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sunday – By Appt. History: Joseph was just 6 years old when he began collecting coins; from then on he was hooked. He dreamed of opening a coin collector’s shop his entire life. After spending 30 years in the construction business, Joseph and his daughter Jennifer Graver opened J&J Coins in Palmerton in September 2010. Joseph has over 40 years of numismatic experience. Prior to joining her father in the family business, Jennifer apprenticed at another coin store and learned the ropes of the business. “She has played a large part in making it a success,” said Joseph. Both Joseph and Jennifer are licensed Precious Metal Dealers. About Us: The store caters to coin collectors by helping them expand their collection. They buy and sell coins of all kinds including foreign currency, rare coins and dates. The coin store is fully stocked with coin collecting supplies such as albums, holders, catalogs and much more. In addition to the coins, J&J also buys jewelry including items from estates, postcards and other local items. They take the time to respectfully sort through your valuables to get you the best price and if they cannot help you, they will direct you to someone who can.

Why They Are Different: In addition to being family owned and operated, J&J Coins is unique, they are the only true coin dealer in the area that caters to all levels of collectors. They can introduce you to a Buffalo Nickel and explain what makes a Peace Dollar valuable. They also buy gold, silver and platinum jewelry, coins and currency, military and local memorabilia. Joseph tells a story of a woman who brought in some old jewelry to sell. Expecting less than $100, the woman was offended when she was offered eight times what she was expecting for her valuables. The woman was sure that Joseph was playing a trick on her and it took some convincing before she realized that he was not.

“There is nowhere else I’d rather be and nothing else I’d rather do.” – Joseph Schock Personal Service: Investments in precious metals and rare coins have surpassed stock market profits as much as ten to one in recent years. This type of investment has proven to be non-reliant on economic conditions and often times improves as other forms of investment falter. J&J Coins will honor your decision to sell and never uses high-pressure tactics. When purchasing coins or jewelry from a customer, pieces are itemized so that customers can decide what to sell and what to keep. The customers are treated like friends and fair prices are always given. Community Involvement: J&J Coins is a proud member of the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce since 2010. As a new bride, Aunt Edna moved into the small home on her husband’s ranch. She put a shoe box on a shelf in her closet and asked her husband NEVER to touch it. For fifty long years Uncle Jack left the box alone until Aunt Edna was old and dying. One day when he was putting their affairs in order, he found the box again and thought it might hold something important. Opening it, he found two doilies and $82,500 in cash. He took the box to Aunt Edna and asked about the contents. “My mother gave me that box the day we married,” she explained. “She told me to make a doily to help ease my frustrations every time I got mad at you.” Uncle Jack was very touched that in 50 years she’d only been mad at him twice. “What’s the $82,500 for?” he asked. “Oh, that’s the money I made selling the rest of the doilies.”

WANT TO SAVE 20% ON YOUR HEATING BILL? If you have a fireplace in your home, that’s how much heat you can be losing up the flue! Do a simple candle test… light a candle and SLOWLY go around the edge of your fireplace opening – or the edge of the fireplace doors, for those homeowners with doors. See what happens to the flame. From the midpoint and up across the top, the flame will move slightly TOWARD the fireplace. This shows the heat leaving your house. At the bottom of the fireplace, the flame will move towards your room. This is the COLD AIR coming down the backside of the flue and heading straight into your cozy warm home!

This well constructed, superbly eningeered damper eliminates 90% of the winter heat and summer cooling loss that leaks past your current damper. It also eliminates downdrafts and keeps moisture and animals out of your chimney and home. Moisture in your chimney causes unwelcome odors and leads to deterioration of bricks and mortar. The Lyemance Top-Sealing Damper works year round to protect your chimney. That’s why thousands are installed each year.

The Top Sealing Damper was originally invented as a replacement damper for rusted-out heatilator fireplace dampers. We have installed 900+ top-mount dampers, 300 as replacement dampers and 600 on masonry fireplaces. They save energy, reduce cold air drafts, make the room quieter, and make starting a fire easier because of the warm column of air that has replaced the standard cold, wet column of air that is normally in your flue.

Professionals always sell the sturdiest, most durable, and most effective products availOpen the damper or able – the ones you lock it tight with this can’t find in your local handle mounted in stores. Why? They the firebox. stake their reputation on what they sell. Lyemance Dampers are only sold through professionals because it takes a professional to properly size and install a Lyemance Damper. Once installed, it’s easy as pie to use – with a simple tug on the handle, it’s open and with another tug, it’s closed. Why wait? Begin saving energy and increase your comfort now. Don’t waste another dollar in energy loss – begin your long friendship with Lyemance, the leader in top-sealing dampers.
