FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
It's that time of the year again when we dig out our winter coats, hats and gloves. Another year is coming to a close and it looks like winter is going to be a cold one. We hope you enjoy the cover of the Gazette, my daughter-in-law Lacey did a fantastic job capturing the faces of our family. She took 61 pictures and it's hard to get six kids to smile and be looking at the camera at the same time, so great job Lacey. Also, we had a great time with this issue's Meet the Staff, some of us were greedy and asked Santa for quite a bit while others truly know the real meaning of Christmas. Soon the hustle and bustle of the holidays will be over and 2017 will be upon us. We'd like to take this time to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Sincerely, Kathy Marsh Donna Bachman Catherine Stroh Christine Stroh Tony Pisco

READ ON Catherine Stroh THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10 BY RUTH WARE Ruth Ware, The New York Times Bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood is at it again with her latest release The Woman in Cabin 10. Ware does not disappoint with this murky tale of journalist, Lo Blacklock, aboard the cruise liner Aurora in the depths of the North Sea. Things take a creepy and suspenseful turn when Lo is convinced she hears someone being thrown overboard and glimpses a woman floating to her watery grave in the middle of the night. Lo is adamant the woman in cabin 10 was murdered, however nobody on the ship believes her and she is told there was never a guest of any kind residing in cabin 10. With poor Internet connections, clues going missing and threatening messages appearing, Lo must discover who the mysterious woman in cabin 10 was and find the murderer before they find her first. A classic, spooky, suspenseful thriller, The Woman in Cabin 10 is ideal for any modern day Agatha Christie lover and the perfect book to curl up with on a cold winter day.

THE GIRLS BY EMMA CLINE Set in the late 1960s, The Girls by Emma Cline follows naïve Evie Boyd, a lonely, reflective teenager looking to find her place in the world in Northern California. When Evie discovers Suzanne, a free spirit who takes her under her wing, her boring life will never be the same. Suzanne opens up her uninhibited, loose trippy world to Evie, and in turn Evie allows herself to sink deeper and deeper into an infamous cult, becoming obsessed with cult leader Russell. When a horrific crime unfolds, Evie’s new way of life in the cult implodes. Once learning The Girls took place in California in the late 1960s and was a fictionalized account of the Manson “family” murders, I was fascinated and so excited to turn this book inside out. However, I was extremely disappointed and got absolutely nothing out of it, except anger. I hated all the characters, understandably. Nonetheless, Cline’s writing was absolutely beautiful and I look forward to reading more from her. Warning, this book is extremely explicit.

THE TRESPASSER BY TANA FRENCH Th e Dublin Murder Squad is back with Tana French’s sixth installment The Trespasser. We learn that a woman named Aislynn was murdered in her home, with little to no clues or DNA left behind. Aislynn was extremely mediocre and led a
boring life, or so it appears. As detectives Conway and Moran dig deeper into the vic’s life, they discover maybe she wasn’t so boring after all and realize they may be in over their heads when the trail leads to the unthinkablea member of their own squad. As with French’s other five installments in the Dublin Murder series, she delivers a page turning, suspenseful read that keeps you guessing until the end, and usually with French, the things right in front of you are hardest to see. The Trespasser packed the weakest punch of the series and I was a tad disappointed, however I highly suggest you read the series if you are interested in the crime/thriller/ suspense genre. Each book is very, very loosely connected to the previous but they do not necessarily need to be read in order. Here is the full series in order for your reading pleasure: In The Woods, The Likeness, Faithful Place, Broken Harbour, The Secret Place and The Trespasser.

Jimmy Stewart and It’s a Wonderful Life submitted by MICHAEL ANTHONY from MORNING CALL ARCHIVES
70 years ago… On December 20, 1946, ”It’s a Wonderful Life” premiered at the Globe Theatre in New York. It may be an iconic Christmas movie, but what many people do not know is that George Bailey’s bleak Christmas Eve was actually shot in the summer of 1946 on RKO’s Encino, California ranch in the midst of a heat wave- which explains why Stewart is clearly sweating in some key moments of the film. The days were so hot that director Frank Capra gave the cast and crew a day off during filming to recover from heat exhaustion. Jimmy Stewart once said, that of all the films he made over the course of his sixdecade career, “It’s a Wonderful Life” was his favorite.

Mrs. Claus at the Slatington Library submitted by RENEE EVANS
The Slatington Library was brimming with holiday fun on Friday, December 2, as Mrs. Santa Claus greeted the children and read a few Christmas stories. Librarian Roseann Pugh graciously subbed for Mrs. Santa Claus after her husband fell ill earlier in the week. Library Board Trustee Lynne Fedorcha entertained the more than 40 children with her magical story-telling skills as well. Violinist Ted
Konic serenaded the children and adults with Christmas carols prior to the story hour. In addition to the story time, the children made a candy cane craft, went on a scavenger hunt in the library, and enjoyed cookies and juice. The highlight of the afternoon was a wrapped present for all the children from Mrs. Claus. It was a successful endeavor and the library was pleased to particpate in the Slatington First Friday event along with other activities such as the tree lighting at Slatington Memorial Park. It was great to see Main Street bustling with community pride.

I was discouraged, I bowed my head, There is no peace in the world assured, The strong hatred is mocking the song, Of peace on earth, kind-heartedness.
Till, ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, Of peace on earth, good will to men.
Then the bells ring like a loud cheer, “God is not dead and is not sleeping, Evil will fail, right [will be] dealt out, With peace on earth, kind-heartedness.”
Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound, the carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Still ringing and singing on the way, The world is brought from night to day, A voice, a view, the heavenly obligation Of peace on earth, kind-heartedness.
It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn, the households born Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Christmas Bells (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s original poem) I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet the words repeat Of peace of earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head: "There is no peace on earth," I said, "For hate is strong, and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men." on Christmas Day,” which in turn is derived from the poem, “Christmas Bells,” written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 – 1882) in the midst of the Civil War, on Christmas Day in 1863. (You will note the order of the verses used in the carol is different than in the original.) The poem shows how deeply troubled Longfellow felt over the division in this country at that time (which was primarily along geographical lines although some may argue it too was political in nature). Adding to his despair was the loss of his second wife, Fanny, in an accidental fire at home and the battlefield injuries that his son, Charles, an officer in the Union Army, sustained at the Battle of New Hope Church in Virginia. While his despair is evident in his words: "For hate is strong, and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men"; he does not end there, for in his next verse we read: "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to men.” I shall close with those words of hope and this traditional greeting: En Frehlicher Grischdaag un en Hallich Nei Yaahr zu eich all! Festive Facts about Christmas submitted by KARIN LEHNARDT
Norwegian scientists have hypothesized that Rudolph’s red nose is probably the result of a parasitic infection of his respiratory system. The Germans made the first artificial Christmas trees out of dyed goose feathers. Each year more than 3 billion Christmas cards are
sent in the U.S. alone. All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas would equal 364 gifts. The “true love” mentioned in the song “Twelve Days of Christmas” does not refer to a romantic couple, but the Catholic Church’s code for God. The person who receives the gifts represents someone who has accepted that code. For example, the “partridge in a pear tree” represents Christ. The “two turtledoves” represent the Old and New Testaments. Two weeks before Christmas is a popular time for breakups According to data analyzed from Facebook posts,
two weeks before Christmas is one of the two most popular times for couples to break up. However, Christmas Day is the least favorite day for breakups. Most of Santa’s reindeer have male-sounding names, such as Blitzen, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrated. In A.D. 350, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birthday of Christ. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the tallest Christmas tree ever cut was a 221-foot Douglas fir that was displayed in 1950 at the Northgate Shopping Center in Seattle, Washington. The traditional three colors of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty. Contrary to popular belief, suicide rates during the Christmas holiday are low. The highest rates are during the spring. The world’s largest Christmas stocking measured 106 feet and 9 inches (32.56 m) long and 49 feet and

into the Christianized Christmas tree. Ancient peoples, such as the Druids, considered mistletoe sacred because it remains green and bears fruit during the winter when all other plants appear to die. Druids would cut the plant with golden sickles
and never let it touch the ground. They thought it had the power to cure infertility and nervous diseases and to ward off evil. Mistletoe (Viscum album) is from the AngloSaxon word misteltan, which means “little dung twig” because the plant spreads though bird droppings. Because they viewed Christmas as a decadent Catholic holiday, the Puritans in America banned all Christmas celebrations from 1659-1681 with a penalty of five shillings for each offense. Some Puritan leaders condemned those who favored Christmas as enemies of the Christian religion. A Yule log is an enormous log that is typically burned during the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25-January 6). Some scholars suggest that the word yule means “revolution” or “wheel,” which symbolizes the cyclical return of the sun. A burning log or its charred remains is said to offer health, fertility, and luck as well as the ability to ward off evil spirits. Because of their pagan associations, both the holly (associated with the masculine principle) and the ivy (the feminine) and other green boughs in home decoration were banned by the sixth-century Christian Council of Braga. The poinsettia is native to Mexico and was cultivated by the Aztecs, who called the
