Health & Wellness 9 Life-Changing Wellness Tips to Lead a Better Life Source: www.medium.com
When it comes to health and wellness, it’s the smallest and consistent efforts that bring the best results. Sadly, too many of us are taking our wellbeing very lightly. If you wish to lead a happy and healthy life, it’s high time that you start giving your well-being the importance it deserves. Thomas Edison summed it up perfectly, “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” I’ve got some tips for you as well that will help you to lead a better and healthy life. Should we take a look at them? Let’s go: 1. Get up and drink a bottle of water In Japan, people drink two glasses of water as the

first thing in the morning. Interestingly, it has the greatest overall longevity being the only country with over 50,000 centenarians. Whether it’s in the water practice or something else, we can learn a few tricks from Japanese to improve our health. Benefits of drinking water in the morning: • Rehydrates your body • Flushes out toxins • Improves metabolism • Increases brain power • Boosts the immune system 2. Come out and take some fresh air Don’t you feel happier when the Sun is shining and you get to spend some time outside? I’m sure you do because I personally love it. However, with many of us spending the major chunk in our stuffy offices, it has become a rare deal to go out and spend some time with nature. Research shows that getting fresh air affects the levels of serotonin that make us feel good about ourselves. Benefits of getting some fresh air: • Good for lungs and skin • Improves blood pressure and heart rate • Relieves stress and anxiety • Makes you happier and energetic • Strengthens the immune system 3. Play happy songs while getting ready Music is known to evoke all kinds of emotions. It is actually very actionable and can be used to manipulate your mood. Make a playlist of your favorite upbeat and happy songs and blast it off in the morning to set the tone for the rest of the day. Benefits of listening to good music: • Improves mental focus • Soothes and relaxes blood vessels News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JULY 18, 2019
• Makes you happier • Reduces stress levels • Gets dopamine flowing 4. Do something new every day Routines are boring and unhealthy. Doing the same thing over and over again is going to bring monotony quite soon in your life. And it isn’t exciting to be living such a life, right? Try doing something new every single day — it’s actually healthy. Don’t complicate, start with small things like taking a different route to work, having coffee instead of tea, and more. Benefits of attempting new things: • Makes life more exciting • Brings you out of your comfort zone • Good for brain and mental strength • Makes you more confident and courageous • Sense of accomplishment 5. Eat more fruits and green salads Those who think they have no time for healthy eating will sooner or later have to find time for illness. About 70–80% of health is eating the right food at the right time. Understand your body type and its nutritional needs. Leafy greens and fruits are a great source of natural fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables — it’s both easy and delicious. Benefits of eating fruits and veggies:
• Healthy weight maintenance • Controls blood sugar • Reduces LDL also known as bad cholesterol • Normalizes bowel movements • Protects your heart and improves skin tone 6. Ditch coffee with green tea and juices I don’t understand the gratification people get by bragging about their addiction to coffee (or tea). Having a cup or two is fine, but gulping down seven to eight cups of caffeine isn’t doing you any good. To bid goodbye to coffee-addiction, replace coffee with green tea or natural juices. Loaded with antioxidants and nutrients, they can have powerful effects on your health. Benefits of green tea and juices • Catechin in green tea prevents cell damage and promotes cell growth • Amino acid L-theanine improve brain function • Prevents skin aging and Alzheimer and Parkinson disease • Lowers the risk of Type 2 Diabetes • Helps you lose weight and lowers the risk of obesity 7. Pop a daily probiotic Probiotics are a great way to boost the immune system and improve the skin health. In simple Continued on page 14

Benefits of listening to music hitting the sack: • Lowers stress • Reduces fatigue • Better sleep • Reduces depression Before you start applying these tips, make sure you develop a firm belief in them and aren’t doing them just for the heck of it. If you aren’t happy from inside while doing something, it’s not going to do any good to you. To lead a healthy lifestyle, it’s vital to get your mind on your side. Benefits of probiotics: • Keeps your gut clean • Boosts your immune system • Protects against hostile bacteria to prevent infection • Prevents various allergies and Eczema 8. Sit up straight The way you stand, sit, and walk is also a part of your well-being and health care. If you are always slouching or walking like a zombie, you need to take care of your posture because not doing so could result in physical deformities and other health problems. To maintain a good posture, place your body in a neutral position so that your pelvis, trunk, and head are in alignment. It is an optimal position that helps you to work efficiently even for long

27 Health and Nutrition Tips That Are Actually Evidence-Based Source: www.healthline.com
It’s easy to get confused when it comes to health and nutrition. Even qualified experts often seem to hold opposing opinions. Yet, despite all the disagreements, a number of wellness tips are well supported by research. Here are 27 health and nutrition tips that are actually based on good science. 1. Don’t drink sugar calories Sugary drinks are among the most fattening items you can put into your body. This is because your brain doesn’t measure calories from liquid sugar the same way it does for solid food. Therefore, when you drink soda, you end up eating more total calories. Sugary drinks are strongly associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and many other health problems. Keep in mind that certain fruit juices may be

almost as bad as soda in this regard, as they sometimes contain just as much sugar. Their small amounts of antioxidants do not negate the sugar’s harmful effects. 2. Eat nuts Despite being high in fat, nuts are incredibly nutritious and healthy. They’re loaded with magnesium, vitamin E, fiber, and various other nutrients. Studies demonstrate that nuts can help you lose weight and may help fight type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Additionally, your body doesn’t absorb 10–15% of the calories in nuts. Some evidence also suggests that this food can boost metabolism. In one study, almonds were shown to increase weight loss by 62%, compared with complex carbs. 3. Avoid processed junk food (eat real food instead) Processed junk food is incredibly unhealthy. These foods have been engineered to trigger your pleasure centers, so they trick your brain into overeating — even promoting food addiction in some people. They’re usually low in fiber, protein, and Continued on page 16

micronutrients but high in unhealthy ingredients like added sugar and refined grains. Thus, they provide mostly empty calories. 4. Don’t fear coffee Coffee is very healthy. It’s high in antioxidants, and studies have linked coffee intake to longevity and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and numerous other illnesses. 5. Eat fatty fish Fish is a great source of high-quality protein and healthy fat. This is particularly true of fatty fish, such as salmon, which is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and various other nutrients. Studies show that people who eat the most fish have a lower risk of several conditions, including heart disease, dementia, and depression. 6. Get enough sleep The importance of getting enough quality sleep cannot be overstated. Poor sleep can drive insulin resistance, disrupt
your appetite hormones, and reduce your physical and mental performance. What's more, poor sleep is one of the strongest individual risk factors for weight gain and obesity. One study linked insufficient sleep to an 89% and 55% increased risk of obesity in children and adults, respectively. 7. Take care of your gut health with probiotics and fiber The bacteria in your gut, collectively called the gut microbiota, are incredibly important for overall health. A disruption in gut bacteria is linked to some of the world’s most serious chronic diseases, including obesity. Good ways to improve gut health include eating probiotic foods like yogurt and sauerkraut, taking probiotic supplements, and eating plenty of fiber. Notably, fiber functions as fuel for your gut bacteria. 8. Drink some water, especially before meals Drinking enough water can have numerous benefits. Surprisingly, it can boost the number of calories you burn. Two studies note that it can increase metabolism by 24–30% over 1–1.5 hours. This can amount to 96 additional calories burned if you drink 8.4 cups (2

liters) of water per day. The optimal time to drink it is before meals. One study showed that downing 2.1 cups (500 ml) of water 30 minutes before each meal increased weight loss by 44%. 9. Don’t overcook or burn your meat Meat can be a nutritious and healthy part of your diet. It’s very high in protein and contains various important nutrients. However, problems occur when meat is overcooked or burnt. This can lead to the formation of harmful compounds that raise your risk of cancer. When you cook meat, make sure not to overcook or burn it. 10. Avoid bright lights before sleep When you’re exposed to bright lights in the evening, it may disrupt your production of the sleep
hormone melatonin. One strategy is to use a pair of amber-tinted glasses that block blue light from entering your eyes in the evening. This allows melatonin to be produced as if it were completely dark, helping you sleep better. 11. Take vitamin D3 if you don’t get much sun exposure Sunlight is a great source of vitamin D. Yet, most people don’t get enough sun exposure. In fact, about 41.6% of the U.S. population is deficient in this critical vitamin. If you’re unable to get adequate sun exposure, vitamin D supplements are a good alternative. Their benefits include improved bone health, increased strength, reduced symptoms of depression, and a lower risk of cancer. Vitamin D may also help you live longer. 12. Eat vegetables and fruits Vegetables and fruits are loaded with prebiotic fiber, vitamins, minerals, and many antioxidants, some of which have potent biological effects. Studies show that people who eat the most vegetables and fruits live longer and have a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other illnesses. Continued on page 18

13. Make sure to eat enough protein Eating enough protein is vital for optimal health. What’s more, this nutrient is particularly important for weight loss. High protein intake can boost metabolism significantly while making you feel full enough to automatically eat fewer calories. It can also reduce cravings and your desire to snack late at night. Sufficient protein intake has also been shown to lower blood sugar and blood pressure levels. 14. Do some cardio Doing aerobic exercise, also called cardio, is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health. It’s particularly effective at reducing belly fat, the harmful type of fat that builds up around your organs. Reduced belly fat should lead to major improvements in metabolic health. 15. Don’t smoke or do drugs, and only drink in moderation If you smoke or abuse drugs, tackle those problems first. Diet and exercise can wait. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation and

consider avoiding it completely if you tend to drink too much. 16. Use extra virgin olive oil Extra virgin olive oil is one of the healthiest vegetable oils. It’s loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and powerful antioxidants that can fight inflammation. Extra virgin olive oil benefits heart health, as people who consume it have a much lower risk of dying from heart attacks and strokes. 17. Minimize your sugar intake Added sugar is one of the worst ingredients in the modern diet, as large amounts can harm your metabolic health. High sugar intake is linked to numerous ailments, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and many forms of cancer. 18. Don’t eat a lot of refined carbs Not all carbs are created equal. Refined carbs have been highly processed to remove their fiber. They’re relatively low in nutrients and can harm your health when eaten in excess. Studies show that refined carbs are linked to overeating and numerous metabolic diseases. 19. Don’t fear saturated fat Saturated fat has been controversial. While it’s true that saturated fat raises cholesterol levels, it also raises HDL (good) cholesterol and shrinks your LDL (bad) particles, which is linked

to a lower risk of heart disease. New studies in hundreds of thousands of people have questioned the association between saturated fat intake and heart disease. 20. Lift heavy things Lifting weights is one of the best things you can do to strengthen your muscles and improve your body composition. It also leads to massive improvements in metabolic health, including improved insulin sensitivity. The best approach is to lift weights, but doing bodyweight exercises can be just as effective. 21. Avoid artificial trans fats Artificial trans fats are harmful, man-made fats that are strongly linked to inflammation and heart disease. While trans fats have been largely banned in the United States and elsewhere, the U.S. ban hasn’t gone fully into effect — and some foods still contain them. 22. Use plenty of herbs and spices Many incredibly healthy herbs and spices exist. For example, ginger and turmeric both have potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, leading to various health benefits. Due to their powerful benefits, you should try to include as many herbs and spices as possible in your diet.
23. Take care of your relationships Social relationships are incredibly important not only for your mental well-being but also your physical health. Studies show that people who have close friends and family are healthier and live much longer than those who do not. 24. Track your food intake every now and then The only way to know exactly how many calories you eat is to weigh your food and use a nutrition tracker. Continued on page 20

It’s also essential to make sure that you’re getting enough protein, fiber, and micronutrients. Studies reveal that people who track their food intake tend to be more successful at losing weight and sticking to a healthy diet. 25. If you have excess belly fat, get rid of it Belly fat is particularly harmful. It accumulates around your organs and is strongly linked to metabolic disease. For this reason, your waist size may be a much stronger marker of your health than your weight. Cutting carbs and eating more protein and fiber are all excellent ways to get rid of belly fat. 26. Don’t go on a diet Diets are notoriously ineffective and rarely work well in the long term. In fact, dieting is one of the strongest predictors for future weight gain. Instead of going on a diet, try adopting a healthier lifestyle. Focus on nourishing your body instead of depriving it.
Weight loss should follow as you transition to whole, nutritious foods. 27. Eat eggs, yolk and all Whole eggs are so nutritious that they’re often termed “nature’s multivitamin.” It’s a myth that eggs are bad for you because of their cholesterol content. Studies show that they have no effect on blood cholesterol in the majority of people. Additionally, a massive review in 263,938 people found that egg intake had no association with heart disease risk. Instead, eggs are one of the planet’s most nutritious foods. Notably, the yolk contains almost all of the healthy compounds. The bottom line A few simple steps can go a long way toward improving your diet and wellness. Still, if you’re trying to live a healthier life, don’t just focus on the foods you eat. Exercise, sleep, and social relationships are also important. With the tips above, it’s easy to get your body feeling great every day.

Turning Point submitted byAndrea Search, Community Outreach Director Turning Point of Lehigh Valley
Think for a moment about when your life changed course. Did you purposefully decide to make a change? Did your circumstances change and that course changed for you? We all have a life story. Each story has that turning point – the time when our life as we knew it turns direction. Turning Point of Lehigh Valley has been part of that story for nearly one hundred thousand women, men, and children over the past forty years. People whose turning point resulted from enduring the violation that comes from being betrayed by the person they loved and trusted. People who found a safe place to confidentially talk out loud about the abuse they experienced and find a compassionate listener to validate their experience. Each story is always unique but shares the common thread of having being impacted by the emotional, physical, psychological and/or sexual abuse of an intimate partner or loved one.
Turning Point’s Story
In 1978 a group of community volunteers started the May-Day Society by creating a safe place for, “battered women,” to find safe shelter. At this time abuse was mostly seen as a family problem. Few services were available and criminal remedies were only for the most severe cases of physical abuse. The volunteers came together with only their
22
passion to help. The societal progress since our start just forty-one years ago has been exponential. In the decade after their start, government programs and protections to help victims of abuse were started. A network of shelters and domestic violence programs sprung up through all of the states and territories. State laws protecting victims from abusers and the communication they could have when sharing their stories with Turning Point advocates were enacted. Federal laws began protecting female survivors and then expanded this century to protect all abuse survivors.
Why Story-Telling is Important
The reason for this expansion of services, advocacy, and awareness is rooted in the millions of stories shared by survivors. At its core, the domestic violence network available through Turning Point is a grassroots movement designed to empower individuals to take control of their destinies. Originally offering shelter and crisis hotlines, programs quickly grew to meet the evolving needs identified by those leaving abusive relationships. Awareness efforts grew from a few passionate activists to teams of educators working with youth, community members, and professional groups to help in violence prevention and community response. “It’s important that we share our experiences with other people. Your story will heal you and your story will heal somebody else.” Iyanla Vanzant This sharing of experience not only helps survivors to find their voices; it also has medical benefits. The act of sharing a story with a supportive listener has been shown to turn off the body’s natural stress responses and turn on the relaxation responses. Healing hormones like oxytocin and dopamine replace cortisol and epinephrine (L. Rankin, M.D., 2012). Providing options for survivors is essential, but the simple act of providing an affirming place to share an experience is crucial for those who feel as if there are no safe options. Turning Point offers an array of safety and empowerment services for those experiencing relationship abuse. Educators are also available to speak with groups. To discuss your situation or ways to help a loved one, contact their 24-hour hotline at 610-437-3369 or visit www.turningpointlv. org. All services are confidential and offered at no cost. “When he hurt my animals, I knew he would hurt me.” - Wendy “I knew I deserved better – I didn’t deserve to be somebody’s property or plaything anymore.” Anonymous “I remember standing in an elevator with a big smile on my face. Someone asked me, why are you smiling? I said, I’m finally safe and happy.” - Jan News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JULY 18, 2019
At Kula Heart Yoga Is for everyone Do Yoga because You are not flexible As a yoga teacher, the most common response I hear from people who have never done yoga before is "I'm not flexible!" It's a common myth that a person needs to have flexibility, strength and be "in-shape" to begin a yoga practice. This is not true. The most advanced yoga students are those who are aware of their body's abilities (including limitations) and work within their own limits. Whether that is sitting for ten minutes and mindfully breathing or doing a physical practice centered around breath, your practice is as unique as you are. Yoga can benefit everyone. Kids yoga can help children learn to manage big emotions and follow directions, connect with others and develop a strong sense of self-esteem. Adults can find peace of mind, relaxation and vibrant health while navigating life's challenges, and the elderly population may find comfort in the social connection and gentle activity that the practice provides. Some benefits include: increased relaxation, increased muscle strength and tone, improved energy and vitality, improved circulation and cardiac health, improved balance and flexibility, better quality of sleep, reduction of chronic pain, improved quality of life, and the list goes on! The quality instruction and variety of classes at Kula Heart Yoga & Wellness in Bethlehem is wonderful for anyone looking to begin or advance their yoga practice. The family-like community embraces all students' abilities and offers various types of yoga classes, bodywork, svaroopa and reiki as well as yoga teacher training and massage therapy continuing education. Unneediche Bills bezahle sie, Die neediche bleiwe henke! -David B. Brunner How the people do it I sat on past evenings And hung my head awhile And contemplated the world for an hour And thought about the people. Here men walk on the streets, All dressed splendidly; They wear the nicest of clothes, And the finest of shoes. The men drink their beer And smoke many cigars; The women eat their ice cream, And ride in cars. Many of the men do not work, Earn little money; They live just like other people In our rich world. Now I work diligently every day And receive a good pay; I wear none of the finest clothing And only plain shoes. I paid off every one of my debts And still have a money besides; Yet I can’t spend so wastefully, And live in such a grand manner. Then I said privately to myself, “For what reason must I be so frugal? Why can’t I also live [like that], And drive around day and night?” Then I went in to a shoe store, There were expensive shoes; “You people must,” I said to the shoe man, “Have a great business here.” “Yes,” he said, “Many people come in here And only a few stay. They want to have the nicest shoes, Then we should put it on [their] account. Who came quickly towards me With his milk can. “Well John, how’s it going this beautiful morning?” I said to the farmer. “The can is, for sure, certainly full, You have a heavy load there. “Aye,” replies John, “The can is Filled with good sweet milk, There are many women at the houses, Who are willing to buy [it]. “Their men have no work right now They are on that great strike, And their boys ride around On their tandem bikes.” “The wives want to have milk, They stand by idly and beg, The say, when the strike is over, Then they want to settle the bill.” “Yes,” John says, “Then they move Away to another place. Then I can go look for my money, And am just so much short.” I am walking by a house then, A man was coming out of there; He wiped his mouth and said That he took a pair. (?) Then he complained to me for a while, His pay was way too small, The cost of things much too expensive, He just could not endure it. The last man that I had seen Would have gladly had a public office;

He said that he spends much money And it didn’t work out. I looked him straight in the face, And right there asked him, “Do you call yourself a republican Or a democrat?” He said he already ran often [for office] And spend much for the party, And often travelled this county From one end to the other. “This county owes me an office A good office, certainly, It just doesn’t matter to me From which party it is.” “Now if I would have an office for three years, Then I would save my money, Half of it would pay my debts, And I could live on the rest.” Now I see how the people do it, I don’t need to think about it anymore; They spend on unnecessary things [bills], The necessary bills remain unpaid.

on the ground. As you settle in, close your eyes and begin to tune in to the sounds around you. Notice what you hear and let your thoughts pass by without judgment. After several moments, begin to shift your awareness to your body. Starting from your toes, silently move your awareness up your body checking in on how each part of your body feels. Is there tension? Pain? Do you have a lot of energy or are you tired? Again, the key is to listen and observe without judging yourself for how you feel. Shift your awareness even deeper and begin to notice your breath. Keep your thoughts focused on inhaling slowly and exhaling even slower. As your breathe, feel the physical sensations in your body as your lungs receive air and energy and as you breathe out and let the breath release from your body. Repeat for at least ten breath cycles. Observe how you feel. Make some gentle movements in your fingers and toes, open your eyes and notice any differences in how you feel. WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT
submitted by Taylor Kocher Taylor Kocher and Sanjeev M were married on June 15, 2019, at the Walnutport Canal Pavilion. The festivities commenced at 4pm with short ceremony surrounded by close family and friends from all over, followed by a casual reception and evening of dancing, heartwarming toasts, and great food and conversation. For the ceremony, Taylor rode in in a classic car driven by a close family friend, accompanied by her maid of honor, sister, and best friend – Madison

Kocher. Following, there was a short cocktail hour during which the couple and family got beautiful pictures taken by the canal. Dinner was buffet style with classic barbeque food, paired with homemade sangria. Four of Taylor and Sanjeev’s closest friends gave hilarious and touching toasts after the meal, full of anecdotes about the couple (some quite embarrassing). Next, Taylor and Sanjeev danced to a cover of “I Can’t Help Falling in Love” and after, Taylor and her father danced to “My Girl”, which was met with tears from everyone. The rest of the evening consisted of catching up and greeting family and friends. There was about 80 people in attendance and the décor was rustic and filled with an array of daisy’s and baby’s breath, colors of pink, green and earthy tones, and plenty of twinkling lights. A delicious variety of cupcakes ended the evening and guests could take home locally roasted coffee as a favor. The couple honeymooned the weekend after in Newport Beach, California, about an hour away from their new home in Los Angeles. Taylor is originally from Germansville and Sanjeev is from Singapore.

Blood emergency: Red Cross issues urgent Call for blood and platelet donors submitted by Alana Mauger
Following a difficult Fourth of July week for blood and platelet donations and ongoing challenges finding new blood donors, the American Red Cross now faces a blood shortage and has issued an emergency call for eligible individuals of all blood types to give now and prevent delays in medical care. About 450 fewer blood drives were organized by businesses and other community groups last week than during a typical week as people across the country celebrated the holiday with activities and travel. This led to about 17,000 fewer blood donations than needed for patients in a single week, causing the Red Cross to now have less than a three-day supply of most blood types available – and less than a two-day supply of type O blood – for patients. At least a five-day supply is desired. In June, the Red Cross launched the Missing Types campaign to encourage donors – especially new donors and those who have not donated in the past years – to give blood or platelets during the challenging summer months.Through the campaign, the letters A, B and O – letters that make up the main blood groups – disappeared from popular brands to symbolize what happens when blood goes missing from hospital shelves during blood shortages. Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are urged to make an appointment to donate using the Blood
Donor App, at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help reduce the time it takes to donate. Upcoming blood donation opportunities in the Lehigh Valley: Allentown 7/19/2019: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Mack South Fire Station and Training Academy, 1902 Lehigh St. 7/31/2019: 1 p.m. - 6 p.m., American Red Cross Lehigh Valley-Bucks Chapter, 3939 Broadway, Whitehall 7/20/2019: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Muslim Association of Lehigh Valley, 1988 Schadt Ave.
