Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by Ruth Hall Kent
This is Open House season and we have two coming up in August! First is the Open House at the Lehigh Township Historical Centre museum on Sunday, August 5 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Come see our recent acquisition, a framed copy of a special edition of The Slatington News from August 1900 covering the train and omnibus collision that occurred in the Benningers area of Lehigh Township. That accident caused 14 deaths and 15 injured including the driver. Come see this and the rest of our collection of items from everyday life in the past. For the younger set we also have a scavenger hunt to search through the museum. The St. Paul's One-Room Schoolhouse in Indianland at 780 Almond Road, Walnutport is open to the public just once a year other than for scheduled group visits. On August 11th from 10am to 2 pm we are holding our annual St. Paul's Schoolhouse Open House. A special presentation by speaker Tammy Schane (Talks by Tammy) will be held in the fellowship hall of St. Paul's UCC will be held at 11:30 am. Tammy will speak about the Progressive Movement of the early 1900's that was affected by World War I and the 1918-1919 Flu Pandemic. This year is the centennial of the end of World War I so we are remembering our local veterans from that war. Mark your calendars for Saturday August 11th to attend this free event! We are seeking interested people to join our Volunteer Team. We need individuals to help in our office, in the museum, at events and fundraisers. We need extra hands to help with maintenance, cleaning, putting away artifacts, filing articles and newspaper clippings, planning events, making phone calls and many other ways. Please consider giving some of your time, it will be worth it! Remember that you can visit the Historical Centre museum any Tuesday morning from 9 am to Noon. If you have items to donate to our collection, stop by during Open House or on a Tuesday morning to drop them off. We encourage small groups and organizations to schedule a special visit to tour the Centre and/or the St. Paul's Schoolhouse. Please contact us through our website at www. lehightownshiphistoricalsociety.org or call the Centre at 610-440-0151 and leave a message.

6 Things Women With Gorgeous Skin Do Every Day WOMEN WITH SMOOTH, RADIANT SKIN AREN'T JUST LUCKY. THEY TEND TO HAVE SIX DAILY HABITS IN COMMON. By Jenny Bailly
They cleanse gently, once a day. Unless you have oily skin, you only need to wash your face in the evening, with a creamy cleanser and lukewarm water. Give the cleanser time to work. "Instead of scrubbing your face, let the cleanser sit on your skin for several seconds and break down the makeup, dirt, and oil," says Boston dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, MD. In the morning, simply splash your face with lukewarm water. (If you're oily, use a gentle foaming cleanser morning and evening.) They reapply sunscreen. You know that the number one way to prevent skin aging is to apply sunscreen, so of course you already use a morning moisturizer with an SPF of (at least) 30. What women with gorgeous skin also do: Reapply sunscreen every few hours. Sunshielding ingredients are only effective for about
two hours—long enough to protect your skin on a morning walk or commute but not throughout the afternoon. They use a retinoid cream every night. "The first time I meet someone, I immediately know if she's using a retinoid because her skin is glowy and smooth," says Miami dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that have been proven to boost collagen, which reduces fine lines, and to speed cell turnover, which evens out discoloration. Retinoids are available over-the-counter (as retinol) or with a prescription (as tretinoin, adapalene, and tazarotene). Because retinoids can cause some irritation at first, Hirsch recommends applying a gentle moisturizer, letting it soak in for at least 30 minutes, then applying your retinoid cream. They eat salmon, and consume lots of antioxidants. Salmon's high omega-3 content helps hydrate Continued on page 14

7 Healthy Fast-Food Meals Under 350 Calories NEXT TIME YOU’RE IN A BIND, OPT FOR ONE OF THESE MEALS AND BANISH EXCESS CALORIES FOR GOOD. BY EAT THIS, NOT THAT! EDITORS
“How did Americans get so fat?” Of all the questions we get, this is by far the most common. There are many reasons: We’ve added extra calories to basic foods, everything from pasta sauce to ketchup. We’re drinking more calories than ever—450 a day, on average. And, of course, we’ve been trained to supersize it. Those “value” meals we order through the clown’s mouth cost us only 17 percent more money, but 73 percent more calories. That’s dummy economics—you wouldn’t buy a new Blu-Ray disc and then pay the electronics store to throw in some old, worn-out videotape, would you? And so, every time we eat out, we add 134 calories to our daily intake. We understand that life is hectic and fast-food meals are inevitable. That’s why we created the runaway bestseller Eat This, Not That! Back in 2007. Want proof? Here are 7 healthy fast-food meals with fewer than 350 calories – updated with new additions for 2014. Next time you’re in a bind, opt for one of these meals and banish excess calories for good. 1. Panda Express Broccoli Beef with Mixed Veggies 190 calories, 9.5 g fat (1.5 g saturated fat), 1,200 mg sodium Panda actually has several options that come in below the 350-calorie mark. As with any Chinese meal, the key is skipping the greasy mound of fried rice and the oily tangle of noodles. Pair a low-calorie entrée such as the Broccoli Beef or the string Bean Chicken Breast with a side of veggies and you wind up with a fairly nutritious meal with plenty of protein to keep you full. Entrees to avoid: Beijing
Beef, Orange Chicken, and adding Fried Rice or Chow Mein to your meal. EAT THIS! INSTEAD OF Panda Express’ Beijing Beef with Fried Rice to save: 1,030 calories, 41.5 grams of fat, 630 mg of sodium, and a half day’s worth of saturated fat! 2. Subway 6” BLT on 9-Grain Bread With Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Green Peppers 320 calories, 9 g fat (4 g saturated fat), 650 mg sodium The health halo surrounding Subway is a boon for the sandwich chain, but for everyone else, it’s quite problematic. The numbers Subway advertises are only for a 6-inch sub and don’t account for cheese, mayo, olive oil, or any extras most people get on their sub. Order a 12-inch sandwich with a couple of extras and your “healthy” sub suddenly becomes an 800-calorie, diet-sinking torpedo. To be fair, though, there are many nutritious sandwich combinations at Subway, and this is one of them. Just make sure to go with 6 inches (not 12), mustard Continued on page 16

(not mayo), and take advantage of Subway’s best option: unlimited veggies. EAT THIS! INSTEAD OF Subway’s 6” Big Hot Pastrami with Provolone Cheese to save: 310 calories, 26 grams of fat, 945 mg of sodium, and almost half a day’s worth of saturated fat! 3. Chick-fil-A 8-Piece Grilled Nuggets with Barbecue Sauce 185 calories, 3 g fat (1 g saturated fat), 710 mg sodium When it comes to healthy fast-food chicken, Chick-fil-A definitely rules the roost. Lately, though, we’ve seen sodium and calorie counts starting to creep upward, so we’ll be keeping a sharp eye on them this year. This 8-count nugget is packed with 23 grams of hunger-blasting protein and is the perfect midday meal. Just make sure you stay away from the Chick-fil-A Sauce for dipping. One tub contains 140 calories. EAT THIS! INSTEAD OF Chick-fil-A’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich Deluxe to save: 385 calories, 1220 mg of sodium (over half a day’s worth), and 24 grams of fat! 4. McDonald’s Grilled Chipotle BBQ Snack Wrap and Side Salad With Low-Fat
Balsamic 315 calories, 10.5 g fat (3.5 g saturated fat), 1,310 mg sodium You’d be hard-pressed to find a healthier wrap at any other major fast-food chain. Why? Because this one only contains five ingredients: grilled chicken, flour tortilla, jack and cheddar cheese, lettuce, and chipotle BBQ sauce. That’s the kind of ingredient list we like to see: simple and delicious. Tack on a side salad and you’ve got a well-rounded meal with fewer calories than one Double Cheeseburger. EAT THIS! INSTEAD OF McDonald’s Crispy McWrap Southwest Chicken with Medium Fries to save: 695 calories (an entire meal’s worth, basically), 27.5 grams of fat, and 530 mg of sodium! 5. Burger King Hamburger and Apple Slices 260 calories, 9 g fat (3 g saturated fat), 460 mg sodium Burger King holds the dubious distinction of being the unhealthiest of the Big Three burger joints, but that doesn’t mean you can’t concoct a decent meal. By simply 86ing the cheese, the burger becomes one of the most reliable choices in the fast-food kingdom, and BK’s fresh apple slices are a delicious yet nutritious side. Together, they make a fine meal if you must dine on the dash. Warning: Every Whopper sandwich has anywhere from 0.5

grams to 4 grams of trans fat. Yikes! EAT THIS! INSTEAD OF Burger King’s Whopper With Medium Fries to save: 800 calories, almost half a day’s worth of sodium, and you avoid any trans fats! 6. Taco Bell Fresco Chicken Soft Tacos 280 calories, 7 g fat (2 g saturated fat), 940 mg sodium Taco Bell gets a lot of flak for being unhealthy, but truth is, this taco joint provides dozens of possible meal combos for less than 500 calories. The same certainly can’t be said for any of the nation’s most popular fast-food burger chains. Stick to the Fresco Menu, where not one item is more than 350 calories. That said, Taco Bell’s menu still has plenty of pitfalls, so order wisely. Danger lurks in the Smothered Burritos, taco salads, and anything with multiple layers. EAT THIS! INSTEAD OF Taco Bell’s Smothered Shredded Chicken Burrito to save: 1,020 calories, 49 grams of fat, more than half a day’s worth of saturated fat, and nearly two days’ worth of salt! 7. Dunkin’ Donuts Egg White Turkey Sausage Wake-Up Wrap 310 calories, 12 g fat (5 g saturated fat), 850 mg sodium Dunkin’ might be known for its donuts, but the DDSmart Menu is the real reason to swing by this
spot on your way to work. A couple of Wake-Up Wraps and a small black iced coffee will give you exactly what you need to stay energized through the morning. Typically we avoid recommending egg whites, opting for the whole egg instead, but with trying to keep these meals under 350 calories, we had to bend a bit. Don’t worry, though, this meal still delivers 20 grams of hunger-fighting protein. You definitely won’t find that in two glazed donuts. EAT THIS! INSTEAD OF Sausage, Egg & Cheese on Croissant You save: 340 calories, 31 grams of fat, and 400 mg of sodium – or more than the equivalent of a Bavarian Kreme Donut.

Relief From Neck Tension, Headaches & Stress in 30 Minutes Submitted by Jessica Ballas
Do you suffer from neck tension, headaches, stress, sinus issues & sleeping problems? Indian Head Massage (Indian Champissage) may be just what you need to feel relief. People from India have known the benefits of massage for a thousand years. Women massaged oils in the hair for beauty as part of a regular grooming routine. Male barbers would invigorate the scalp & neck with massage after your shave & haircut. Children are massaged frequently as they grow & then taught to share massage with family members. Massage becomes an integral part of daily life from generation to generation. Indian Head Massage has evolved to become a simple, safe & highly beneficial therapy. Massage of the face, scalp, neck & shoulders soothes, comforts & balances the flow of energy to produce a feeling of peace & tranquility. Headaches dissipate, neck tension releases, stress melts away & the whole body feels restored & renewed. This unique treatment is performed with the client seated & fully clothed. No oils or creams are used. Techniques such as gliding, kneading, friction & acupressure are used on the shoulders, upper arms, neck, head/scalp & face. This healing modality works through the hair so stiff hair gels & hairspray
should not be used before the treatment. One session lasts approximately a half hour. Clients receiving Indian Head Massage can expect to feel a wonderful sense of peace during & after the session. Relief from stiffness, tension & stress is immediately noticed. Clients may also feel their whole body feel "lighter" & energy is balanced. Many clients report feeling complete relaxation, relief of headaches & improved sleep. Other physical & mental benefits include: relief of neck & shoulder pain/stiffness, relief of sinus pressure, muscle relaxation, stress relief, improved range of motion in the neck, helps eye strain & concentration, balances energy & relieves anxiety. Jessica Ballas, Licensed Massage Therapist since 1994, has been a Certified practitioner of Indian Head Massage for over 14 years, having completed requirements of 10 case studies plus written & practical exams. Indian Head Massage (Indian Champissage) is a blissful experience. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll notice results! 10 Anxiety Hacks Therapists Swear By - Take it from the pros By Fiona Tapp
THESE TRICKS CAN HELP ALLEVIATE SOME ANXIETY IN THE MOMENT. The 40 million Americans who live with an anxiety disorder know how terrifying both the physical and mental symptoms can be. Issues like debilitating headaches, shortness of breath and persistent rumination make even the simplest daily tasks feel like impossible undertakings. For people without the disorder, acute instances of anxiety - think job or financial stress - can lead to the same symptoms and feelings. However, there are ways to treat and manage the issue. We consulted experts on their go-to moves when it comes to mitigating anxiety, as well as their advice on when to seek professional help. Here are just a few anxiety tips experts swear by: 1. Put your anxiety on ice Sheri Heller, a New York City–based psychotherapist, suggested literally dousing your stress. She recommended plunging your hands into ice water or splashing some on your face. “Sensorial stimulation with cold water can break through dissociative feelings that often accompany anxiety and offer immediate relief from heightened cortisol levels,” she explained. 2. Clench your fists While exercise is great for alleviating anxiety, it’s not exactly realistic to go for a run when you’re in the middle of a panic attack. However, a few physical activities - even ones as simple as clenching and releasing parts of your body - can have a positive effect, said Nicole O-Pries, a therapist based in Richmond, Virginia. “Place your hands on or beside your legs. Ball your fists like you are really mad and tighten your
hands as much as you can. Take a deep breath and loosen your fists a little bit at the end of the out breath,” she said. “Continue to take deep breaths and loosen your fists until your hands are completely open. Then stretch your fingers outward as much as you can. Now notice your body again and the lessening of the anxiety points you felt earlier.” 3. Repeat a calming phrase Carol Howe, a spiritual psychotherapist in Orlando, Florida, said that when the body is under stress, we need to address our physical discomfort before we can calm down. “Breathe deeply at least three times, in through your nose and out through your mouth,” she said. “Assure yourself with this language: ‘I am safe, and I am loved.’” Repeat slowly three times, and you should begin to feel more at ease. 4. Allow yourself to feel anxious Yep, you read that correctly. Sometimes the more you fight it, the worse it gets, Howe said. Instead, acknowledge that you’re feeling anxiety and give yourself permission to feel uncomfortable. “I know this sounds scary, but anxiety stays anchored into place when we resist its presence,” she said. “It can literally move through and beyond us the moment we decide to allow it.” 5. Let the tears flow It can also be helpful to cry, Heller said. Research shows that crying can be therapeutic, and often it’s a sign that there are emotions that need to be released. “Often anxiety is a response to trapped or repressed grief,” Heller explained. “In these cases, giving oneself conscious permission to cry can offer Continued on page 28

It was still pleasurable to be There in every inn; [To enjoy] a large glass of the best beer And whiskey [that was] less expensive. And [at] two for five cents, the cigars, “Old Honest” chewing tobacco; And if one bought tobacco for his pipe, Then it was a full pack. Swapping watches was a pleasure, And with a good conscience; Since everyone was still so honest, No one cheated you there. And if one bought a small horse, It was healthy in to its bones; Never a cribber [Bites impulsively into wood], None with heaves. [A COPD from allergies.] And when the children were in school, They learned smartly there; Also they never carried out any tricks, The teacher, not angered. The boys always listened to dad, Not bedecked with a disrespectful mouth; The girls never pouted around, Mother never hurt [by them]. The poor people worked diligently And did their duty; The rich gladly payed them, And with a good wage.
The miller had no trouble To be well off honestly; He took for his miller’s toll, Not too large an amount. The auctioneer also did not So badly misrepresent things to the people; One never heard of a lawyer That one would have swindled [someone]. The doctors always knew right away Just what would help someone; They didn’t first operate on someone, And then [have to] sew them back up. One always paid the pastors well So that they could live; One did not try to enter Into the kingdom of heaven with pennies. It was once, once upon a time A time so wonderful; The young people today know nothing at all How nice the time was once. Now I believe, of course, that such times you will never see for the likes of us; And yet – perhaps it was just a dream And it was meant so!

Lauren Rose, a psychotherapist in Rye, New York, suggested that people feeling anxiety based on their newsfeeds (FOMO, anyone?) take a timeout. “Social media - and the Internet in general - often heighten anxiety and fear, sometimes through encounters with inaccurate information or information not relevant to the particular situation,” she said. But the World Wide Web isn’t all awful. Online support groups can help anxiety sufferers feel less alone, she added. 7. Take stock of your surroundings Not thinking about your symptoms entirely is frivolous advice. (How can you not think about feeling as if your world is crashing?) That said, distracting your mind by focusing on something concrete in front of you can help you to avoid spiraling out of control, said Julia Colangelo, a licensed clinical social worker based in New York City. “Count different colors, numbers or items in a room. If you’re feeling panicked, this can be a way to ground yourself and manage distress and anxiety while also not checking out,” she said.

8. Jot down your feelings Putting your worries and triggers in writing can help you manage your symptoms and challenge negative self-talk that’s often associated with anxiety, said Karen Whitehead, a licensed counselor based in Atlanta. “Write down two to three words or bullet points that describe your biggest worries at that moment. Take them one at a time and ask yourself if it is a fact or your opinion,” she said. “Often what feels 100 percent true in the moment is actually our opinion, and when we recognize it as such, we can diffuse its intensity.” 9. Face what’s causing your anxiety in the first place It sounds counterintuitive, but it’s one of the most effective strategies. Robert Duff, a licensed psychologist and the author of Hardcore Self Help: F**k Anxiety, said it’s important to face specific fears you have and not practice avoidance tactics. “Anxiety is fed by avoidance. When you feel anxious about a given scenario, one of the most common reactions is to avoid it,” he explained.“Even though logically there may be no real danger in these situations, anxiety makes you feel like you actually dodged a bullet by avoiding the potentially upsetting situation rather than pushing through. That just makes anxiety bigger.”

When you are in a possibly anxiety-inducing situation, try not to retreat. “Challenge yourself to stay in it for five minutes,” he said.“You can tolerate just about anything for five minutes. If you can handle it after five minutes, push it to 10, then 15, etc. Eventually, your body will regulate itself, and the anxious feelings that you have will become easier to tolerate.” Heads up, though: This approach is best undertaken with the support of a therapist, Duff said. 10. Seek help from a professional Speaking of support from a therapist and talking things through with a mental health professional can be hugely beneficial and keep you safe from a progression to more dangerous anxious behaviors, said Heidi McBain, a licensed counselor based in Flower Mound, Texas. “Seeing a therapist who specializes in anxiety can help people break the unhealthy patterns in their lives and learn new, healthier ways of coping with their anxiety,” she said. Although experiencing anxiety isn’t always within your control, taking care of your mental and physical health can limit the chances that it will become overwhelming. Making sure that you eat well, exercise and get enough rest, along with watching the way you talk to yourself, helps ensure that you’re more resilient against negative feelings and thoughts.

Your Body Has A Bone To Pick With You About Your Diet Submitted by Ashley Pontius
Most people know that when you look for a house, you want a place with “good bones.” In other words, if the structure of the home is in good shape, most people feel they can fix up the rest. If a home doesn’t have good bones, the rest of it doesn’t matter. The same can be said of your body. If you don’t take care of your bones, the rest of your body will quickly fall into disrepair. “Taking care of your bones doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, but that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked,” says Dr. Victor M. Romano, a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and author of Finding The Source: Maximizing Your Results – With and Without Orthopaedic Surgery (www.romanomd. com). “Just a little moderate exercise and eating some of the right food and drinks is all that is required.” Vitamin D, for example, is important for the absorption of calcium and aids in improving muscle strength and balance, Dr. Romano says. A deficiency of Vitamin D can cause soft, thin, brittle bones. It’s also associated with depression, Parkinson’s disease and seizures. Moderate weight training is always
To know JESUS CHRIST and to make Him known.

recommended to keep bones strong, even for senior citizens. Dr. Romano recommends that instead of taking calcium pills, the best way to get calcium into the body is with a healthy diet. He suggests a few ways to add calcium to your diet to keep bones healthy: Start the day with calcium-fortified orange juice. Cook cereals with skim milk or almond milk (instead of water) or add two tablespoons of nonfat dry milk. Spread low fat cream cheese on bread or toast instead of butter or margarine. Add low-fat cheeses to sandwiches, salads and pizzas. Add sardines to salads or sandwiches. Include higher calcium greens, such as spinach, broccoli and kale, in your salad. Enjoy low-fat or fat-free yogurt with berries for dessert. Make smoothies with frozen fruit, fortified orange juice and low-fat or fat-free yogurt. “A poor diet can lead of a lot of health complications, but poor bone density is usually overlooked by many people trying to get healthy,” Dr. Romano says. “Getting enough Vitamin D and calcium in the diet is well worth the effort.” About Dr. Victor Romano Dr. Victor Romano (www.romanomd.com) is an orthopedic surgeon in Oak Park, Ill., and the author ofFinding The Source: Maximizing Your Results – With and Without Orthopaedic Surgery. He is board-certified in orthopedics and sports medicine with over 25 years of experience in the field. He graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and completed medical school at the University of Loyola-Chicago.

The Seven Most Common Factors in Premature Aging By Vivian Rivera | Nutrition & Wellness
Aging is the natural process of growing older.Yet there are many factors that play a role in whether we age gracefully or if we are the one out of two people who age faster than our biological age. More than half of us look older than we really are because we either engage in behaviors that increase our aging, or we do not actively support a more youthful body through inaction. Knowledge is power, and the more you know about fighting the aging process, the more control you can take toward maintaining a healthier, younger body and mind. 1- Premature Aging and Attitude The mind plays a significant role in whether we are aging faster or slower, and we can use the mind to help us accelerate or decelerate the process. Happier people are quite simply younger looking people. The more you hold hope, optimism, and joy at the top of your list of priorities, the younger your face will appear. Moreover, happier people live longer often with fewer health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, and even aching joints and bones. Perpetual anger and distress can form permanently on the face in the form of fine lines and deep wrinkles. When the face expresses chronic sad or angry emotions, the constant scowling can turn into wrinkles formed by muscle memory. A happier face is devoid of wrinkled eyebrows and scowl marks because the muscles have spent more time in a relaxed state. This doesn’t mean that one bad day will give you a face full of wrinkles, but how your face carries your expression more than 50% of the time can determine how prematurely you form wrinkles, where, and how deeply. Dear Friend,
2- Aging, Smoking, and Drinking We all know that smoking and drinking in excess are not good for us. They lead to all kinds of health problems and deplete our bodies of necessary nutrients. Additionally, the lines and discoloration of a smoker or drinker are worn all over their face. The skin needs a certain amount of hydration, Continued on page 35

collagen, elastin, and oxygen in order to look youthful and healthy. Smokers develop fine lines around the mouth, deeper forehead wrinkles, and are twice as likely to develop bad teeth. The entire body, including the facial skin, is deprived of enough oxygen and the look and feel of a smoker’s face can be obvious over time. Drinking excessively can leave permanent marks on the body as well. Aside from the damaging effects on the liver and kidneys, heavy drinkers have facial skin that has been discolored over time, has poor muscle tone, and often has broken blood vessels or small spider veins. 3- Age, Sun, Cold, and Moisture We can easily accelerate our aging process by basking in the sun’s rays. Sun damage is the number one cause of wrinkles and skin that has been permanently damaged. Age spots and other forms of discoloration can be seriously exacerbated by the sun’s harmful UV rays. A face that has spent years working on its tan appears heavily wrinkled and touch like show leather. Once you pass the twenty minute mark in the sun, the benefits from absorbing necessary Vitamin D are counteracted by the damage of the UV rays to the skin. Spending a life time in cold environments can have a similar effect. Rather than creating a tougher skin, the skin appears too thin and wrinkles develop. The same effect can be seen in people who use harsh acne treatments over a period of years. When acne treatments dry out the skin, it can cause damage similar to the damage caused by cold and sun, creating a dry, tough, wrinkled face. When the skin’s natural oils are depleted, the skin loses its elasticity and the face ages. Moisturizing daily, sometimes two and three times per day, and
protecting the skin for the sun and damaging cold can combat these rather common effects on our aging process. 4- Aging and Diet One of the most commonly misunderstood aging factors is the effect that food has on the body. There are foods that you can eat that will help you retain a younger body and foods that will help age you faster. Choosing a diet that is high in fats, sugars, processed foods, and low in fresh fruits and vegetables creates an internal environment that is anything but youth friendly.

Premature Aging Continued from page 35
Foods that cause inflammation, like refined sugar, white flour, and even excessive dairy products, can readily create inflammation in the body that contributes to the aging process. These foods tend to make the body “heavier” in feel and appearance because the internal organs are actually suffering from inflammation. Aside from this, our bodies do not process foods that are not in their natural form very well, which means the organic breakdown of nutrients is not being put to biological good use. Replacing a sugary diet with fried and fatty foods, even if you are not overweight, with one that is high in natural products can keep the whole body looking tighter and younger. 5- Aging and Weight Being too thin or too heavy can add to the aging process. Being underweight reduces the natural fats in the facial structure which allows the skin to sag and adds to the appearance of wrinkles. A face lift or Botox doesn’t help an underweight face look younger because the natural fattiness that fills out the face can’t be replaced with medical procedures like these. Simply adding five pounds to an underweight
body can bring back a softer, wrinkle free face. Too much weight can make us look older by creating poor muscle tone. Overweight people, especially as they age, tend to be less active and this leads to chronic health problems and the cycle of aging continues. Even in your forties, fifties, sixties, and sometimes beyond, putting on a few extra pounds doesn’t mean that you have to carry around a spare tire. Rather, targeted exercise can keep your entire body in shape while adding muscle reduces the flabby, wrinkly look that too much fat can produce. People who have suffered from eating disorders also tend to develop wrinkles, dry skin, and skeleton like features as they reach their thirties and forties. The body has spent an extended period of time malnourished, even if it was fifteen or twenty years before. The effects of this phenomenon can be combated through a diet rich in antioxidants, fresh, natural foods, and ample muscle building exercise that does not result in excessive weight loss. Since the metabolism was effected during the time of the eating disorder, those who have recovered should periodically see a nutritionist to develop high energy, low fat, age fighting dietary plans. 6-Aging and Choices We all make daily choices that either help or

hinder the aging process. Regular work outs can help prevent premature aging and keep the entire body in great shape. Choosing television in the evening over physical exertion can lead to premature aging. The chronic use of harsh chemicals on and around the body can add to aging, not to mention disease. Everything from finger nail polish to natural products that make you feel good (aka high) and the medications that we pump into our body can have age related side effects. The closer we can get back to the natural form our bodies crave, the less likely we are to see our body’s age right in front of our eyes. Making choices that work with our body rather against it can help slow down the aging process. Learning to listen to your body can change everything. Stop eating when you’re full. Rest when you’re tired. Focus on yourself in a way that you never have before. Turn toward natural interventions when possible instead of chemical alterations for turning back the clock. These are simple choices that work with our bodies’ own natural rhythm and pay us back in dividends beyond belief. 7-Aging and Stress Chronic, high stress lives are a good recipe for aging. Aside from the effects that a worried face

has on facial wrinkles, stress affects everything from the way we carry ourselves to our energy level. People who are consumed with daily stress do not walk tall and proud like people who are feeling good about themselves. They move slower and they challenge their bodies less. People who are overwhelmed with stressed also tend to have illnesses that can help the aging process along. A certain amount of stress is actually good for us, although stress that creates physical signs on the body should be handled on a pleasant and relaxing manner. Grab a weekly massage and practice calm forms of exercise like Yoga. Meditation can also help improve your overall stress level, which can make you feel more focused and younger. While we can’t keep those birthdays from rolling around in our direction, we can take affirmative action to keep the aging process from taking over our lives. With less stress, better diet and exercise, and a happier outlook, we can retain our youthful joy and keep our spirits much younger. The youthful joy on the inside will be noticeable on the outside.

NCC Offers New Fundamentals of Beer, Wine and Spirits Course for the Fall Submitted by Mia Rossi
The Hospitality Management Program at Northampton Community College (NCC) is very excited about a brand new credit class being offered this fall 2018 semester. The 3 credit course, Fundamentals of Beer, Wine & Spirits, is offered as a part of both the AAS in hospitality management: restaurant option and the specialized diploma in dining room operations. Director of Hospitality Management at NCC, David Schweiger, says, "There is a movement in the restaurant industry for more beverage information concerning beer, wine, and spirits. Our program continues to stay current with the industry trends. In the future, the program would like to create an entire AAS program or diploma based on Craft Beverage Management." This course will provide a foundational knowledge of Beer, Wine, and Spirits. It provides an overview of the origins, production, sales, and responsible service of wines, spirits and beers. Topics include styles, service techniques, product knowledge, sensory analysis and beverage tasting. Sensory analysis is a significant part of the course and
anyone under 21 years of age can only use sight and smell analysis. Robert Van Thiel, Beverage Director and Sommelier of Molinari's and NCC hospitality program graduate said, "One major benefit of my time in the NCC hospitality program includes the visibility the program gave to me in the community through opportunities on and off campus. to rely on would not have been possible without my time spent in the program. I am confident that the addition of a course, specifically on the beverage sector, would have been an asset to my learning experience had it been a part of the already strong hospitality program being offered at NCC." With local breweries and distilleries popping up in the region, NCC hospitality and culinary experts at the College decided they needed to respond to the industry's beverage segment in a new and unique way. "Research is showing that when a customer is dining, they want to pay for an experience rather than a product. So, in turn, this class will explore experience innovation when it comes to beverages. The more knowledge the NCC students can poses when it comes to beer, wine and spirits, the more marketable they will be to industry," notes Schweiger. According to AmericanCraftSpirits.org, Pennsylvania is one of the top states leading the craft spirits industry with employment in the craft spirits industry growing 47.8% over the past twelve months.
There are still seats left, but the course is filling up quick. The course taught by Associate Professor of Hospitality Management, Rebecca Heid, will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays 2 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. in Alumni Hall Room 126, Gates Center on the Bethlehem Campus. The Best Beauty Products BY GLAMOUR BEAUTY EDITORS
Ask any dermatologist about their favorite skin care products and there’s a good chance at least 3/4 of them come from the drugstore. It’s true— while there are plenty of great luxury options out there, that very same innovation has trickled down into what you'll find on the shelves at your local Target or CVS. (We’ll let you in on a little secret: Mass brands put a lot of time and money into research, so there’s quality science behind what goes in the bottle.) Keep reading to discover the exfoliator that'll leave your skin baby-soft, the sunscreen that works on even the most sensitive skin, and the acne treatment beauty pros can’t stop talking about. Your skin—and budget—can thank us later. The Best Cleanser "Simple’s Micellar Water is my must-have, doit-all skin care product that I always have on hand. It gives my sensitive skin an extra dose of hydration, making cleansing that much more enjoyable. I love using it post-workout or on a no-makeup day for gentle cleansing that’s still effective and feels nourishing." —Miranda Mendelson, beauty blogger Buy It: Simple Water Boost Micellar Water, $9, target.com
The Best Exfoliator "This is a serious product at a not-so-serious price. Finding highly effective acid exfoliators at the drugstore is no easy feat, and this one combines the best of both types of exfoliation: chemical and physical. Even the busiest of us can find time to exfoliate when the lactic acid, enzymes, and gentle scrub particles get to work in just five minutes." — Jordana Mattioli, medical esthetician Buy It: Pixi Beauty Peel & Polish, $24, target.com The Best Moisturizer "For those of us with sensitive skin who still want good SPF coverage, there is no better-tolerated sunscreen moisturizer than La Roche-Posay Toleriane. I can recommend this product with confidence to even my most sensitive patients." — Dr. Macrene Alexiades, dermatologist Buy It: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer UV SPF30, $20, amazon.com The Best Eye Cream "First of all, Olay is one of my favorite drugstore brands. I love that it’s so dependable and, personally, for someone who travels all over the world, I love Continued on page 47
