INSIDE THIS ISSUE
FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK It sure is great to be back at The Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette, working with the public again. Don't forget to vote for your favorite place to get a cool treat. You can either vote on our website or go to Facebook or send in the ballot in the magazine, the deadline is July 27th. Speaking of cool treats and summer please don't ever leave your pet in the car. Even if you are just running some quick errands do your pet a favor and leave them at home. Even when it's only 70 degrees outside the temperature inside the car will reach 89 degrees in only 10 minutes, even if you keep the windows open it has little effect on how hot it is inside the car. We are also one of the drop off places for the 3rd annual Doodie Calls/MisPits pet food drive. The deadline for donations is Sept. 11 and all donations will

Lehigh Township Historical Society Sponsors Schoolhouse Tour And Special Musical Program Submitted by BEVERLY PUTT
Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. St. Paul's Schoolhouse at 780 Almond Road in Lehigh Township will be open for tours that afternoon. Visit the 1865 one-room schoolhouse which is located near St. Paul's UCC of Indianland. Learn what the classroom was like years ago. At 2 p.m., you will be treated to a special musical program (for all ages) and light refreshments in the church fellowship hall. You won't want to miss this program! On August 6, Fritz and Belva Williams, a musical couple from Palmerton, will present a short excursion into music from other lands and other times. Performing on a variety of folk instruments, they will sing and play songs and melodies from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, Germany, Canada, and the United States. Belva plays a folk harp, a beautiful instrument with a lighter and purer sound than the much heavier concert harp which has found a place in the modern orchestra. In addition to singing some of their music, Fritz will play soprano, alto, and tenor recorders, wooden flutes that

enjoyed great popularity in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Those who played flutophones when they were kids, which look a lot like recorders, will be surprised to discover the virtuosity, range, and purity of sound of the real thing. Fritz will also add the raspy, reedy melodies of harmonicas and small accordions known as

concertinas and the eiree, hollow sounds of ocarinas or “sweet potatoes” to the musical mix. Harmonicas, apparently were created by German clock makers in the 19th century and they were designed to produce automatic harmonies, but they achieved their greatest popularity among American players, especially African-American players, who learned to bend notes and capture the moodiness of the blues. Harmonicas and ocarinas were popular among soldiers on both sides during the First World War. Fritz enjoys using these instruments in innovative ways to play folk music, religious music, and even certain classical pieces. When he chooses to accompany himself, he plays a folk guitar or his newest acquisition, an autoharp. The Lehigh Township Historical Society, which likes to explore old customs and past events, is pleased to offer this unusual opportunity to sample the rich diversity of our musical past. The LT Historical Society invites you to spend a relaxing summer afternoon at St. Paul's learning about various instruments and enjoying the music. Also, go back in time and visit St. Paul's "little red brick schoolhouse." Learn about days gone by. Spread the word! Bring your family and friends! For more info, call 610-440-0151.

COOKING WITH CATHERINE
Sausage Stuffed Zucchini Boats
Recipe by ME- inspired by www.marthastewart.com
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •
1 tsp. olive oil 1 giant zucchini 1 lb. fresh sausage, casing removed 1 tsp. onion powder 1 tbsp. fresh minced garlic ½ c. breadcrumbs 1 tsp. lemon juice ½ c. Parmesan cheese 1 egg, lightly beaten
DIRECTIONS • •
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice giant zucchini in half, scrape seeds and soft flesh from zucchini, reserve a half-cup. Place zucchini, cut sides up, on baking dish. Heat oil in large skillet, add sausage and onion powder. Cook, breaking up sausage until browned. Add garlic and zucchini flesh, cook until garlic is fragrant, about one minute. Remove from heat, stir in remaining ingredients.
• • •
Please note, I followed a Martha Stewart recipe (http:// www.marthastewart.com/1014060/sausage-stuffedzucchini) but made quite a few changes, so I have shared my version of the recipe with you. I’m sure the Martha Stewart version is much better but I made revisions based on what I had and it came out very good. The great thing about zucchini boats is you can pretty much do whatever you want! For my next attempt I think I’m going to try chicken, cherry tomatoes, fresh basil and mozzarella cheese. Have fun, see what you can create!

Slatington Veterans Committee Holds Ceremonial Groundbreaking Submitted by ROBERT STETTNER
Underneath a brilliant blue sky the Slatington Veterans Committee held a ceremonial groundbreaking on our nation’s birthday, July 4. The groundbreaking was held in conjunction and immediately followed Slatington’s Annual Heritage Day Service at the Slatington Baptist Church. Pastor Henry Distler officiated the ceremony held at Slatington Memorial Park, which will also be the future home of the Slatington Veteran’s Memorial. The ceremony began with Pastor Distler welcoming the large crowd in attendance and giving the statement of purpose for the Veteran’s memorial, as
the Slatington Legion Honor Guard stood nearby. A prayer of invocation followed, along with a scripture reading of Psalm 30. Committee chairman, David Altrichter then took the mic, and described the elements that will comprise the memorial. The centerpiece of the memorial will be a granite memorial listing the names of 30 armed service members from the Northern Lehigh area who lost their lives in the line of duty. Additional elements will include brick pavers, seven flagpoles, benches, fencing, lighting and landscaping. Raised beds containing engraved bricks of area Veterans will bookmark the granite memorial. The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) made a $1,000 donation check presentation to committee Treasurer Robert Churetta for the memorial project. After the memorial description Pastor Distler returned and gave a prayer of blessing for the ground upon which the memorial will be constructed. All seven members of the Slatington Veterans Memorial Committee then grabbed shovels and broke ground on the estimated $35,000 project. Pastor Distler closed out the ground breaking ceremony with benediction from Numbers.

Was hot Yesus uns glannt datt drin? Datt hot er erklaert, as mir unserm Nochber helfe solle, wann er Hilf braucht un wann mir helfe kenne. Un unser Nochber iss net yuscht ebber, wu newich uns wohnt, awwer unser Nochber kennt eenichebber vun eenich me Blatz sei. Un wer kann en guder Nochber sei? In seinre Gschicht hot Yesus der Samaridder ausgelese fer der gut Nochber zu sei. Awwer die Samaridder waare vun de Yudde verhasst warre. Ihre Relichion waar en bissel unnerschittlich un ihre Vorgenger waare net all Yudde; deel waare vun me anner Volk. Es gebt do dann zwee morallische Grundsatze: Mir solle gude Nochbere sei fer sie, wu Hilf brauche. Un mir solle aanemme, as die Leit gude Nochbere aa sei kenne, wu unnerschittliche Glaawe hen, odder wu vun annere Volksleit sin; so hot Yesus es ausgelegt. Nau loss uns geh un duh graad wie seller Samaridder! The Parable of the good Samaritan Jesus often taught the people moral principles through parables. And one that he used was “The parable of the good Samaritan.” We can find that in the Gospel of St. Luke, the 10th chapter, verses 25 through 37, and it is written thus: 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written

How do you read?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live." 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30 Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, 34 and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii [A denarius was a Roman coin

roughly equal in value to a day’s wages.] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" 37 He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." (RSV) And what did Jesus teach us in that parable? He explained that we should aid our neighbor who needs help, when we are able. And our neighbor is not just someone who lives next to us but our neighbor can be anybody in anyplace [when they need our help]. And who is a good neighbor? In his parable, Jesus chose the Samaritan to be the good neighbor. But the Samaritans were hated by the Jewish people. Their religion was a little different and their ancestors were not all Jewish; some were from another ethnicity. There are then two moral principles: We should be good neighbors to those who need help. And we should accept that people who have different religious beliefs and who come from other ethnic groups, can also be good neighbors; Jesus laid it out thus. Now let us go and do exactly like that Samaritan!

Pottsville’s Crobot teases second stellar album with ‘Not For Sale’l By JUSTIN SWEITZER
In an era when pop music and hip hop rule the charts as well as the airwaves, new artists in the rock genre often get smothered out of a chance at mainstream attention. It leaves modern rock bands with an opportunity to earn an underground and often niche fan base, but hinders their goal of obtaining large commercial success. Pottsville, Pennsylvania’s Crobot exemplifies a band poised to break through that barrier and become a new voice for rock ‘n’ roll music that often is still held up by names of the past. The band’s blend of modern, groove-driven riffs, classic blues influences and supernatural-themed lyrics give them an unmistakable identity from today’s sea of tiresome rock groups that dominate the genre’s diminishing radio presence with the same dull drone. Crobot’s latest single “Not For Sale” continues what the band started with their debut full-length LP, Something Supernatural. The track marks the first single released from their upcoming sophomore album, Welcome to Fat City, set to be released on September 23. It opens with an up-tempo, catchy riff from guitarist Chris Bishop, whose guitar licks have helped to propel the group into a groove rock powerhouse. Frontman Brandon Yeagley doubles as lead singer and narrator for band, as “Not For Sale” tells a story of souls and possessions with deeper meanings hidden within, a common structure that also has appeared in their previous work.
Crobot’s groove rock storytelling was on display for audiences since the release of Something Supernatural in 2014, as they toured with some of the biggest names in rock including Volbeat, Black Label Society and Anthrax. The band is additionally preparing for an August tour with Sevendust, an Atlanta-based heavy metal outfit that is well respected among metal fans. Welcome to Fat City will be released via Wind-up Records and Nuclear Blast Records in September, and is poised be another solid hard rock album filled with heavy metallic riffs, catchy choruses and stories of other-worldly beings and entities that will turn casual listeners into “Beardos.” If “Not For Sale” mirrors the work of the rest of the band’s sophomore effort, Crobot is well on their way to establishing themselves as one of rock’s most dynamic and talented bands.

LT Historical Society Sponsors a PA Dutch Day With Free Schoolhouse Tours And Musical Program Submitted by BEVERLY PUTT
You are invited to attend St. Paul's Schoolhouse on Saturday, August 6. Special tours will be held at 1-1:50 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. A special musical program by Fritz and Belva Williams will be held in St. Paul's UCC of Indianland's Fellowship Hall at 2 p.m. The church is located at 787 Almond Road, Walnutport (Lehigh Township). The schoolhouse is located at 780 Almond Road. There is a large parking lot between the church and the schoolhouse. If you have any special stories about your schoolhouse days or anecdotes you would like to pass on, contact Brenda at the society (610-440-0151). There surely must be some interesting stories out there. The 1865 one- room schoolhouse was restored by the society and opened as a museum in July of 2010. We hope you will stop by and see the restored building with all of the related school memorabilia inside. Many of the area's one and two-room schoolhouses were converted into homes or have deteriorated. St. Paul's is in excellent condition, thanks to the society! At 2 p.m., you will enjoy a special program prepared by the Williams. They will play various
musical instruments: alto, tenor and soprano recorders, harmonica, ocarina, harp. guitar, and more. You will hear different styles of music from other countries. One special number will be the PA Dutch lullaby, "Schlof, Bubeli, Schlof." You won't want to miss this interesting program. Come out and meet this talented couple from Palmerton. This is a program for all ages. While in the church fellowship hall, check out the display pinpointing former locations of schoolhouses in Lehigh Township. There will be a PA Dutch theme with PA Dutch pictures for children to color in the church hall to take home. If you are PA Dutch and enjoy good eating, you will be pleased with the refreshments - shoo-fly pie and sugar cookies with various beverages. We hope many of you PA Dutch residents will come out and "kibitz." Bring your family and friends to St. Paul’s for an interesting afternoon! For more information, call 610-440-0151.
