How Much Does It Really Cost To Own Your Car? You'll Be Amazed Written by Kevin Mercadante| www.moneyunder30.com : April 16, 2019

You're probably spending way more than you think on your car. The good news? The longer you drive your car, the cheaper it becomes. Don't believe us? Here are the numbers. Owning a car is expensive. Between the price of the vehicle, financing costs, insurance, taxes, and maintenance, owning one —let alone two — cars can drain your bank account quickly.

Paying close attention to how much your vehicle costs also presents an opportunity — buy and own a car the smart way and you could save a lot of money each year. Here, we look at how much a car really costs so you can compare your expenses to the average and find areas where you could try to save. And we settle an old debate: Should you trade in before your car gets too old or should you drive it into the ground? Let’s look at what AAA says about the average costs of a “typical sedan” that is driven 15,000 miles per year: The six major costs of owning a car

AAA actually lists seven expenses, because they consider tires to be a separate category. To cut down on the number of expenses, I’m lumping tires and maintenance together. But here are the average costs for each expense: Fuel

The average cost is $1,681.50, or 11.2 cents per mile. This is also the main reason why total operating expenses fell by 2 percent from 2014 — fuel costs were lower by $268.50 due to the dramatic fall in gas prices since the middle of 2014. It’s important to understand that this is just an average based on national statistics. How much you pay for fuel each year will depend upon the miles per gallon that you get with your car, road conditions in your area, and the specific price of gas where you live, which can vary widely. Finance charges

The average expense is $669 per year, which assumes that you bought your car with a 10 percent down payment, with a five year loan and average credit. The amount you pay will vary depending upon the size of your down payment, the length of your loan, and your actual credit. Learn more by using our simple auto loan calculator. Depreciation

At $3,654, it represents more than 40 percent of the annual cost of owning a car. This should come as no surprise, since new cars in particular experience rapid depreciation in the early years of ownership. Though many consumers don’t think about depreciation in this way, it is very much a real cost. It represents the loss in value of the vehicle over its useful life. Cars Direct reports that, on average, a new car depreciates by 20 percent as soon as you drive it off the lot, then at roughly 15 percent per year thereafter. Of course, those are just average numbers. Individual depreciation rates are based heavily on the make and model, total mileage, and even the condition of the car.

JULY 4, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com

Insurance

The average is $1,115 per year but, again, this will depend upon your driving history, the type of car that you own, and the state you live in. Auto insurance premiums can vary dramatically from one state to another, from $805 in Maine to a high of $2,476 in Michigan according to 2015 numbers from Insure.com. If you don’t use your car often, check out Metromile, which sets your rate based on miles driven, so you can be sure you’re not overpaying if you’re a low-usage driver. You can, of course, usually find savings by taking time to compare car insurance quotes from competing insurers. Maintenance and tires

Per AAA, maintenance is $766.50 and tires are $147 per year. Combining the two, we’re at $913.50, and that looks about right for late model cars. Of course, if your car is more than a few years old, that number could easily double. But how much you actually pay will again depend upon personal circumstances. If you take care of your vehicle, maintenance expenses are likely to be lower. If you live in an area that experiences harsh weather conditions, it will probably be higher. Still another variable is your ability to perform routine repairs yourself, versus bringing the car to a shop. Continued on page 10

Licensing, registration and taxes

The average here is $668 per year, but this varies a great deal by state. For example, some states have ad valorem/excise taxes, in which they tax you on the depreciated value of your car each year. In other states, there are just some relatively minor registration fees. The total annual cost to own a car

Once again, it’s very important to emphasize that the numbers presented by AAA represent averages based on nationwide statistics. The cost of owning a car can even vary with the age of the car. For example, USA Today reported that the average price of a new car in 2015 is $33,560. If a car depreciates by 20 percent just by driving it off the lot, then depreciation in the first year will be $6,712. That’s about double the number used by AAA, and it would increase the cost of owning your car in the first year to $11,756. In year five, your depreciation expense would drop to $2,473, which would lower the total annual cost to own the car to $7,517. But since ad valorem taxes are based on the depreciated value of the car, those fees would drop as well. By year 10, your depreciation expense would drop

to just $1,096. At that point, you could also lower your auto insurance by dropping collision and comprehensive coverage which could cut the average car insurance by $557. The finance charge would (or should) be long gone by year 10, which chops another $669 off the annual cost. However, it is also likely that your maintenance expense would be higher by at least $1,000. On a net basis, the annual cost would be something like $5,914, or about half the annual cost of a car in year one. Buy a new car vs. keep your car longer As you can see, the longer you own your vehicle, the less it costs to operate. Based on a newcar bought for $33,560, the annualized cost of ownership is: • Year 1: $11,756 • Year 5: $7,517 • Year 10: $5,914 Of course, you can reduce these numbers a great deal by buying a quality used car. We’ve used a new car as an example to illustrate that off-the-lot depreciation. Is it better to keep a car for a long time or do the higher maintenance costs on an older car make it better to trade it in earlier? The numbers suggest that keeping the car longer is the way to go. Most people seem to agree. Fox News recently reported that the average age of a car in the US has climbed to a record 11.5 years. However, the decision is likely to come down to non-financial factors. For example, how well is the vehicle running? Can you do at least some of the repair work yourself, as a way of saving money? How much driving do you do? How much do you need the car? And perhaps most important, are you in a financial position to be able to afford to purchase a brand-new vehicle? Check out our car affordability calculator to see how much car you can afford. The answer will be different for everyone. How do you handle the decision to replace a car? Do you replace it with a new one as soon as the car is paid for? Do you “drive it into the ground”? Or something in between?

Top 10 Car Care Tips by Rick Kranz, Contributing Editor | February 26, 2019 www.kbb.com

We have all heard these stories, cars and trucks lasting 200,000, 300,000, even 500,000 miles. What’s the secret? Three words: maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. “Nobody reads the owner’s manual. Pretty much to make it run that far it’s fluids, timing belts, maintenance by the book,” said Jim Moritz, global technical trainer for an international automotive tool and equipment manufacturing company. These vehicle owners adhere to every word recommended by the automaker, for them it is a religion. In many cases, they are changing engine oil, transmission and brake fluids more frequently than required. They read that manual from cover to cover. “I know guys who are getting 300,000 miles out of a F-Series pickup and 400,000 miles from a Hyundai Sonata,”he said.“There is no such thing as too much maintenance, you are not going to hurt it.” Listed below are 10 maintenance tips to make the engine, transmission and other expensive parts of your vehicle last longer. Most importantly, read the owner’s manual to avoid thousands of dollars in repairs. 1. Check the oil: The simplest task to increase the life of your vehicle is to maintain the proper amount of oil in the engine. Additionally, change the oil and filter at the intervals recommended in the owner’s manual, for example, every 5,000, 7,500 or 10,000 miles. Oil lubricates the engine parts. Second, oil is a fluid that disperses heat. Some of the oil is burned off by the engine so it needs to be replenished when the level drops. Make sure it is the proper weight oil for your engine. “An engine runs hotter with less oil in it. The hotter it runs the more strain, stress that is put on the engine parts. You could blow the engine eventually, meaning it will need to be rebuilt or replaced, it’s very expensive. It will not blow up if the engine is a quart of oil down, but when they start getting a couple of

Fight sludge: There’s a big downside to short trips, stop-and-go traffic, as well as long trips when there is a heavy load on the engine, for example, pulling a trailer. The enemy: Sludge. Sludge is a petroleum byproduct that is a gooey, black-colored substance that builds up in an engine. It is a major contributor to engine problems. Changing the engine oil at prescribed intervals or more frequently will reduce the probability of sludge buildup and extend the life of the engine. Specific driving conditions can cause sludge. It can come from oil solidifying on a long trip at engine temperatures generally above 210 degrees Fahrenheit. Other culprits are short trips that prevent the engine from reaching its proper operating temperature and water in the oil caused by condensation. “It accumulates everywhere in the engine. Sludge drops to the bottom of the oil pan. But when the engine warms up, the oil mixes with the goo and is pumped through the whole engine,” Moritz said. “Sludge does not burn away.”To avoid sludge, follow the owner’s manual for oil and filter changes or switch to synthetic oil, which is not petroleum based. Many fleets use synthetic oil. Continued on page 12

3. Timing belt replacement: Your car’s engine has either a rubber composite timing belt or timing chain. The device connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, which is synchronized with the opening and closing of the engine’s valves. If your car has a timing belt, follow the owner’s manual to determine when the belt should be replaced. “Rubber belts break and when they do that’s the end of the engine, it is catastrophic, you are done,” Moritz said. To avoid disaster, the timing belt should be replaced at intervals recommended by the automaker, usually between 50,000 and 110,000 miles. The cost to replace the timing belt isn’t cheap but it is thousands less than rebuilding the engine. 4. Check power steering fluid: Older vehicles and some new models have a hydraulic power steering pump that is lubricated by power steering fluid. The pump’s reservoir has a screw-type cap that lifts off, so the fluid level can be checked. If the pump runs dry, it can fail and require a replacement costing hundreds of dollars. A few symptoms of a power steering problem are squealing noises when turning the steering wheel or heavy or stiff steering. Newer vehicles have electric power steering; there are no fluids. 5. Transmission fluid replacement: Having the proper amount of fluid is critical because it cools the transmission, lubricates moving parts and smooths the shifts between gears. However, the fluid deteriorates over time. Frequent stop-and-go driving or pulling a trailer accelerates deterioration. Under those conditions the transmission’s operating temperature rises, putting a strain on the transmission’s components and the fluid. Automakers recommend more frequent fluid replacement under those conditions. Check the owner’s manual for details. Signs of transmission problems: If the fluid turns dark or has a burnt smell this could be a signal that the it needs to be changed or that the transmission is developing

mechanical issues. Check the fluid level when the engine is running. To avoid transmission failure only use the fluid recommended by the automaker. “I know a guy who mixed fluid on a Honda. His transmission lasted a week,” Moritz said. 6. Radiator coolant flushing: Coolant has rust inhibitors that break down over time. Rust and corrosion can build up and harm an engine, plug a thermostat and damage a water pump. Some automakers recommend a coolant change every 30,000 miles, some suggest over 100,000 miles. Again, check the owner’s manual. 7. Top off brake fluid: While you are under the hood checking fluids, it’s a good time to check the brake fluid level. Place the vehicle on a level surface, then unscrew the reservoir cap. The brake fluid level should be between the minimum and maximum marks in the fluid reservoir. Use the automaker’s recommended fluid and add to the proper level. Replacing the brake fluid will not increase the longevity of the brake system but it might save your life. Brake fluid absorbs water over time which degrades its effectiveness in providing stopping power. “A brake system is not perfectly sealed as you might think so you can get condensation just from the change of cold temperatures to hot,” Moritz said. If you have too much water in the brake fluid, stepping on the

brakes hard generates heat which in turn can boil the water in the line and as a result, increase the vehicle’s stopping distance. 8. Transfer case maintenance: This is a very expensive repair when things go wrong. The fluid inside the transfer case on all-wheel and fourwheel-drive vehicles needs to be replace at prescribed intervals. Follow the recommendations in the owner’s manual. 9. Rotate your tires: Tires are expensive, so you want them to last. The owner’s manual will say when the tires should be rotated and alignment checked. Equally important is maintaining the proper air pressure to get more miles out of each tire. A sticker on the driver’s door frame lists the tire pressure for the front and rear tires. 10. Have a clean engine air filter: A dirty air filer can reduce miles per gallon, hurt engine performance and contribute to higher engine emissions. No maintenance required There are some components on cars that at one time required regular maintenance, but because of technological advances, there’s no need anymore. Ball joints and steering linkage which at one time required lubrication, no longer require it; new spark plugs may last 150,000 miles and at one time vehicle batteries needed the water level checked.

Interior Detailing Tips And Tricks SOURCE: WWW.CARWASH.COM

Standard interior detailing involves many more types of materials and more complicated areas than standard exterior detailing (aside from major paint correction, of course). From personal experience, as well as the experience of several folks I’ve worked with, interior detailing takes longer than standard exterior detailing. It’s just more complicated. In fact, several operators surprisingly charge less for á la carte interior detailing, even though it takes more labor hours and equipment to perform. First tip: Examine how long it takes to perform an interior detail compared to an exterior detail before deciding

on a price. Tips and tricks of interior detailing will be covered in this article. For some operators, these might be standard operating procedures. Nonetheless, I hope everyone reading will find some of this content helpful. Battling pet hair Vacuuming and air purging the loose debris inside a car can be time consuming enough. If there is excessive pet hair, the job becomes particularly frustrating for the detailing technician. This is especially true if a vacuum and compressed air are the only equipment available. The job of pet hair removal can be greatly improved with some kind of device or tool to help grab the pet hairs and pull them out of the carpet fibers. To that end, several small tools are available, including gloves with a special rubberized “hand,” a brush with rubber bristles, a rubbery pet hair sponge and the pumice block. The typical technique is to “rake” the pet hair toward you with one of these devices in one hand and the hose end, preferably with a crevice tool for extra suction, in the other hand. As the pet hair is

loosened by the raking motion, the vacuum sucks away the hair. Although each of the mentioned tools will be very helpful with pet hair, the pumice block seems to be the most efficient and is preferred by many detailers. A disadvantage of the pumice block is that it will scratch hard plastic trim pieces which often surround carpeting. However, proper training and careful use, this should not be a problem. Regardless of the tool selected to help remove pet hair, the amount of time spent will likely be reduced by 50 to 75 percent. This time savings doesn’t mean, however, that pet hair removal should be included in a standard interior detail. Remember, Continued on page 16

with removal of excessive pet hair, extra value is added to the detail job, which should bring up the price accordingly. In short, excessive pet hair is not part of a normal interior detail. Cleaning carpets A great way to deep clean carpets and mats is by using a hot water extractor. I recommend first vacuuming the carpets to remove loose dirt. Some technicians like to “dry scrub” the carpet first, which tends to loosen more dirt from the fibers. After vacuuming, prespray the carpets with a non-foaming carpet cleaner that is designed for use with a hot water extractor. Then scrub the carpeting by hand or with a brush-equipped polisher. This scrubbing step will go far to improving the effectiveness of the extractor. The heated water of a high-quality extractor should be enough to rinse the soil and cleaning chemical from the carpet. I don’t recommend adding any cleaner to the solution tank of the extractor. If you rinse with chemical-laden hot water, the carpet is infused with that chemical. The remaining chemical in the carpeting tends to attract dirt, making the carpets resoil much faster. Carpets cleaned with extractors will require additional drying before returning to the customer. High-volume air movers can be used inside the car. Also, after moving the vehicle outside, the vehicle’s climate control system may be used to dry the carpet, utilizing both the heat and air conditioning (to remove moisture). Lightly soiled carpets and mats can be successfully cleaned using the same techniques, only substituting a dry vapor steam machine for the extractor. The steam machine will effectively clean the top of the carpet fibers, leaving them clean, sanitized and virtually dry.

You’ve got to move it Interior detailing is taking care of everything inside the car, including areas neglected by most drivers. So moving things around inside a car is necessary to get access to all those areas. This includes moving front seats to their extreme positions, adjusting them all the way up and all the way back. When the seats are moved, wipe off the seat tracks with a utility towel or a paper towel that can be discarded. Make sure to clean between the front seats and the center console. This seems to be a universally common place customers inspect when picking up their “completed” vehicles. A towel wrapped around a spoke brush will help get into these hard-to-reach areas. Many back seats nowadays are also moveable. Check to see if the seatbacks have a release, allowing them to fold forward. The crease area behind the seatback could have a collection of debris. Also, if the rear seat bottoms pull up or forward, move them as well, and clean the exposed area. The rear section of an SUV often has several compartments under the floor. Check, vacuum and wipe these areas as necessary. Stubborn marks The hard plastic and vinyl surfaces inside the car are generally easy to clean with an all-purpose cleaner, brushes and microfiber towels to wipe away loosened grime. However, some marks on these surfaces will not come off with even the most aggressive brush. At this point, I recommend having isopropyl alcohol available. With careful use, it will effectively remove shoe scuffs and similar marks. A popular foam pad cleaner or melamine block is also great for surface marks that don’t come off with normal cleaning. Interior detailing is a complex operation requiring multiple steps that involve several chemicals and numerous pieces of equipment. Specialized tools, equipment, chemicals and techniques can help to make the job easier.

Junior Achievement Teen Entrepreneurs of Collegeville Receive Scholarship submitted by Robin Olson

On Wednesday, June 19, in Washington, D.C., the teen entrepreneurs of Denim2Denim and Southeastern Pennsylvania placed in the top 3 among 15 JA student companies competing to win the JA Company of the Year at Junior Achievement’s (JA) 2019 National Student Leadership Summit (NSLS). The Collegeville teens representing their student company in Washington D.C. were awarded a scholarship. The scholarships provided to the five students represent each of the top three finishing teams. The team members of the thirdplace team were awarded a $500 (3rd place scholarship by the Achievement Foundation. We are incredibly proud of Denim2Denim's accomplishments this year, but win or lose, the experience of preparing for and competing at the National Student Leadership Summit is something that has benefitted our students tremendously. Over the course of the year, we watched each of these students grow in their confidence, presentation skills, and business acumen, as well

as grow together as a team and form friendships with each other and the other students they met from across the country. They left the summit inspired and ready to make big changes in their own community and in the world, and I can’t wait to see what problem they choose to focus on solving next year! Said volunteer Associate Director, Curriculum Management for Pfizer, host company for Denim2Denim. With a goal of transforming unwanted clothing into functional products, Denim2Denim addressed the problem of textile waste by developing three styles of handmade, one-of-a-kind bags using donated jeans: Set2Go, an all-purpose zipper bag; Go2, a cross-body bag; and Top2Bottom, a tote bag. Their solution gives purpose to unworn clothing filling the closets of their target market. during the 2018-19 school year creating nearly 500 start-ups, JA Company Program gives teens the skills to start and run their own businesses under the mentorship of a local business volunteer. “I’m proud that Denim2Denim has been recognized as JA Company of the Year. I have watched these students throughout the year as they started and grew their business. They truly demonstrate how fostering entrepreneurship can help spur economic growth through innovation and job creation," said Paul Kappel Jr.. The student companies competing at the JA NSLS were assessed on their financial performance, individual team members’ personal and professional development, on a self-produced commercial about their product or service, on their team’s live presentation to a panel of business leaders, and on their company’s performance at an Entrepreneurship Expo on Capitol Hill attended by Members of Congress.

Northampton County Summer Picnic 2019 How the time flies as we zoom into another Summer season. On Friday, June 21st Northampton county senior centers joined together at the Slate Belt Senior Center in Bangor. More than 170 people attended for a fun filled day. Multiple activities were available in the morning (the potato game was hilarious!). Then after a tasty picnic lunch musical entertainment by "The Spinners" was enjoyed by all. A variety of dancing music kept us grooving and our feet tapping. Then to top off the day, hand

scooped ice cream sundaes with lots of toppings... Yum! The distribution of Farmer's Market Vouchers continue at different locations throughout the county. Contact your local center for dates. Remember that Mom said to eat all your vegetables. Northampton Senior Center welcomes area adults 60+ for daily activities, meals and socialization. Open Monday-Friday 8:00-1:30, contact Krista Ambrosino for more information at 610-262-4977.

Homesickness This is the last part of Henry Harbaugh’s poem. The first part was published in the last issue of ‘Town and Country.’ Everything is quiet – the door is closed!

I stand here reminiscing! Something is rattling a little now Back there in the kitchen. I won’t go in – I can’t yet! My heart is heavy with homesickness; I’ll go a little way on the porch And seat myself on the bench; No one will see me, if I cry, There behind the grape vine. Into the silent ‘night’ of death! When I – from my father’s house – Left for the first time, My mom stood here crying At that railing there; And nothing is so sacred to me now Like exactly that sort of thing.

Today I can still see her [there] standing With her handkerchief in hand; Her cheeks red, her eyes wet – Oh, how she just stood here! There I gave her my farewell I wept as I gave it, It was the last time in this world, That I gave her a farewell! Before I came back home again She was in her grave! Now when I think of my mom And envision that I see her, Thus she stands at that railing there And cries as I go away! I don’t see her in the rocking chair; Nor in any other way. I don’t think of her as in the grave; Just at that railing there! There she always stands within my heart And weeps on lovingly! What’s happening, that I look there thus At that end of the bench? Do you know it? My heart isn’t dead yet, I know it, thank God! How many a times my dad sat there On summer days after dinner, The hands crossed on his lap, Continued on page 42

His cane lying beside him. What was he thinking about in the stillness? Whoever might know it – say it! Perhaps it is a dream of his childhood That so softly stirs him, Or he is a youngster at that point, Who lays out nice plans! Perhaps he sees the graveyard there, Which already holds mom! Perhaps he looks towards his rest There in that better world! I don’t know, should I go in the house? I tremble at the door! It is surely full inside [of furnishings], And yet it is empty! It is no longer home, like it once was, And also can no longer be; What went out with our parents [at death] Can never for all eternity return! The dead have earned eternal joy, Mine is the mourning part. So it goes in this rough world, Where everything must end! Yes, certainly in this old [earthly] home One feels himself all alone! Oh, if it would not be for heaven, With its alluring rest, Then I would have despair long already, I would not know what to do. Yet hope lights my way To that eternal home. In light and eternal joy! How often when I am in trouble, Do I think of that rest, And would want, if it would only be God’s will, That I would go there sooner; Yet I will wait until my hour strikes (time’s up), Then I will say – “World, adieu!”

From there one never goes away; A good mom weeps no more, In that joyful realm. No dad looks longer for a grave, Where, what he loves, lies. That is no world of misery like those Which betray every joy; There [Father’s house] this life has eternally Always conquered death. There one finds, what we lost here, And keeps it for eternity; There all our dead live

[Henry Harbaugh’s biography: I think I was remiss not to mention that Harbaugh left home for Ohio, at least in part, because his father would not pay for further education for him and thus he was not home at the time of his mother’s passing. NCC Awarded PA DCED Grant-Free training Will prepare students for in-demand jobs submitted by Mia Rossi

Northampton Community College (NCC) was awarded $199,780 from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development's (PA DCED) Pennsylvania Manufacturing Training-toCareer Grant Program. Michele Pappalardo, NCC's associate dean of workforce development, is the project director. The project will support free training for 60 students in Microcredentials for Manufacturing, an industry-validated, modularized training program that lattices technical and job readiness skills in a way that provides flexibility for the student, rewards student progress and retention, and meets regional employer demand for entry level workers in a low- unemployment environment. Individuals with barriers to employment are in need of a steady income and cannot reasonably wait two years or more to obtain an associate's degree or higher before entering the workforce; meanwhile the regional manufacturing industry has a critical, immediate need for entry level workers in order to maintain operations and facilitate growth. This training project, developed in partnership with regional manufacturers, provides students with the ability to show employers specific skills and competencies learned that improve their employability. The micro credentials earned within the program will provide students with a stackable,

non-credit pathway of modularized courses that provides access to multiple occupations within the advanced manufacturing career cluster and creates a bridge to a variety of post-secondary programs in high-demand manufacturing industry career pathways. Interested individuals should contact NCC's Student Success Specialist at 610-332-6317.
