Happy Father's Day to all the fathers, I hope you all have a great day. Hopefully the weather will be nice, it seems to go from one extreme to the next. Either you have to wear a sweater and it's raining, or it's really hot, there is no in between. Father's Day is a hard day for me. My father passed away in 2016 and I miss him terribly. So Happy Father's Day Dad and I hope you have a great day. Be sure to check out our cover; this is Tony, our designer, and his two sons. He was also on the cover in 2010 with Evan who is now seven. Leo is four. I hope you all enjoy this issue. -Kathy Marsh (610) 767-8008

MEET THE STAFF What do you have planned for the summer? This summer my family will be going to Rehoboth Beach for a week in July. We rented a house and look forward to all of us being together. My sister will be at her home in Bethany so we will plan on getting together with her as well at the beaches and other fun time activity. Donna Bachman
This summer I hope to be visiting the beach quite often. I also hope to do some camping this summer. I love to be in or near the water so a campground with a water slide and a pool will be a requirement. When I'm not at the beach or camping, I will be relaxing in our pool at home. Kathy Marsh
So far no big plans, however I’d like to spend time at the beach, pool, local wineries and some summer concerts. Catherine Stroh
We’re going to go to the beach - Wildwood and Ocean City, MD and then to amusement parks Hersheypark, Knoebels, Dorney and Dutch Wonderland. Tony Pisco

Trolley Program at Slatington Library submitted by WANDA OWENS
On June 2nd the Slatington Public Library was pleased to partner with the Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce for its monthly First Friday celebration. Mr. Jim Layland of the Northern Lehigh Historical Society presented a wonderful program on trolley service in our area. Mr. Layland had us board the trolley at Allentown Terminal, and he was our tour guide on the trip along the rails to Slatington Depot. He had pictures that helped us visualize our journey. Points of interest along the way included: Albright’s Tavern, Kratzer’s School House, Hill Top, Greenawalts’s, Jordan Bridge, Siegersville, Levan’s Hotel, Schnecksville School, Neffsville Hotel, Casey’s Crossing, Best’s Crossing, Lentz Farm, Geiger’s Farm, Sunnyside Farm, J Peters, Hunsicker’s (Kern’s Farm or Pig Pen), Hoffman’s Post Office (Newhard’s), Slatington Sub Station, Dowell Street Junction, and the Slatington Terminal. The cost was 25 cents and it took 55 minutes for the trip. Trolleys also ran from Allentown and Slatington to Slatedale. They also were available to travel as far south as Philadelphia and north to Delaware Water Gap. The roads were narrow and unpaved for the most part at the beginning of the 20th
century, and the trolley gave people a safe fast mode of transportation to destinations they normally would not have been able to visit. It improved the quality of life in many rural areas by providing new employment and entertainment opportunities. The advent of the car and better roads caused the demise of trolley service. Slatington trolley service ended in 1931. The” Berksy” rail service continued into the 1950’s, and it transported many students to Slatington High School before Northwestern High School existed. Mr. Layland gave a complete history of the coaches used by the Allentown and Slatington Street Railway Company, and how they generated power to move them on the tracks. The company sold the excess power to PP&L for its residential customers. PP&L still uses the trolley right of way for its poles and lines. Steamtown in Scranton has an example of the type of trolley cars used on the route on public display. There are many sources of information about early rail history. Please drop by the library to view the window display depicting this special type of travel. The library has books available to learn more about trains and trolleys.

Horse and foot, into Frederick town.
Barbara Fritchie Up from the meadows rich with corn, Clear in the cool September morn, The clustered spires of Frederick stand Green-walled by the hills of Maryland.
Forty flags with their silver stars, Forty flags with their crimson bars, Flapped in the morning wind: the sun Of noon looked down, and saw not one.
Round about them orchards sweep, Apple- and peach-tree fruited deep, Fair as a garden of the Lord To the eyes of the famished rebel horde, On that pleasant morn of the early fall When Lee marched over the mountain wall,— Over the mountains winding down,
Up rose old Barbara Fritchie then, Bowed with her fourscore years and ten; Bravest of all in Frederick town, She took up the flag the men hauled down; In her attic window the staff she set, To show that one heart was loyal yet. Up the street came the rebel tread, Stonewall Jackson riding ahead.

Shone over it with a warm good-night. Barbara Fritchie’s work is o’er, And the Rebel rides on his raids no more. Honor to her! and let a tear Fall, for her sake, on Stonewall’s bier. Over Barbara Fritchie’s grave Flag of Freedom and Union, wave! Peace and order and beauty draw Round thy symbol of light and law; And ever the stars above look down On thy stars below in Frederick town! - John Greenleaf Whittier [John Birmelin’s version was a loose metrical translation of John Greenleaf
Whittier’s 1863 poem. Since it is not a literal translation, the meaning of a few of his Dutch words follows. The Dutch words are listed in alphabetical order, spelled as they were in the poem: bedracht – looked over; gedraut – trusted; gemucht – stirred; gepackt – seized; Gfaahr – danger; gfehrlich – dangerous; gnapps – hardly; grobb – rough or unpolished; kee = ken; Kichegfress – chuck wagon; Lumbegsindel – disorderly mob; Rascht – rest; Rebbel-gscharr – whole Rebel army; Rebbel-schtrom – stream of Rebels; Rilps – rough fellows; Sewel – saber (?); verdutzt – sheepishly; verscheecht – frightened; weht – waves; wehrt – resist; welst sich – is rolling; wimmelt’s – it swarms; Zann – rage.]

[Historical note: While Barbara (Hauer)Fritchie (or Frietchie) was living in Frederick at that time and did have a Union flag, it was one Mrs. Mary Quantrell, not Fritchie, who defiantly waved her flag at the Confederate troops according to witnesses and also according to a letter which she herself later wrote to
John Greenleaf Whittier, asking him to correct his error. (A historically accurate account, contrasted with the traditional perception of the event, could be an article by itself.) Also the original poem was in individual couplets; I combined two couplets to save space and to follow Birmelin’s four line verses.]

LAUGH OUT LOUD Four men are in the hospital waiting room because their wives are having babies. A nurse goes up to the first guy and says,“Congratulations! You’re the father of twins.” “That’s odd,” answers the man. “I work for the Minnesota Twins!” A nurse says to the second guy,“Congratulations! You’re the father of triplets!” “That’s weird,” answers the second man. “I work for the 3M company!” A nurse tells the third man, “Congratulations! You’re the father of quadruplets!” “That’s strange,” he answers.“I work for the Four Seasons hotel!” The last man is groaning and banging his head against the wall. “What’s wrong?” the others ask. “I work for 7 Up!”
