Did you know that tents are the most popular type of shelter when people go camping? Or that the average camper age is 35 years old? Now, you might have figured that tents were the most popular shelter type – used by 69% of campers, but did you think 35 was the average age, or did you think younger (or did you think older)? Here are some other interesting “did you know?” facts about camping.

The Numbers

There are 13,000 vehicle accessible campgrounds in the United States and Canada. In the United States alone, approximately 40 million people go camping every year and 2.7 nights is the average length of camping trips for tent campers. The average trip for an RV camper is 3.5 nights.

In the United States, on average, campers take 3.8 trips per year. They drive 146 miles to their destinations and set up camp about 1/4 mile from their cars. Approximately 42% of campers in the United States choose to camp at state park campgrounds.

Campers spend an average $128.26 on their first camping trip. Around 68% of adult campers in the United States are married or living with a partner, which suggests that camping is a family activity.

Up In Canada

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in Vancouver Island, Canada, is the world’s most expensive luxury camping experience. A single night costs $3,900. The camp can only be accessed by a 30-minute boat ride or by taking the scenic route, a 45-minute private charter plane.

There are no televisions or phones at the resort. The goal is for the camp’s guests to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and really be entertained by the great outdoors. Each tent has everything a person would need to create their very own outdoor adventure. In addition to scuba gear, fishing poles, and horseback riding equipment, the rooms are decked out with massage chairs, hot tubs, and saunas.

The camp offers tons of activities including yoga classes, horseback riding, kayaking, whale watching, bear watching, hot spring swimming, archery, rifle shooting, zip-lines and much more. However, one of the most popular activities is a hiking and fishing expedition aided by helicopter to ensure the guests can plunge deep into the wilderness.

Other Surprising Facts

• Millennials go camping more than any other age group. They cite a love of outdoor activities, an appreciation of nature, a love of music festivals, and a love of sharing photos on social media as motivations for camping. • The flashlight is the MOST popular camping purchase of all. • The Mountain Region of the United States, from Montana down to Arizona and New Mexico is slightly more popular as a camping destination than other parts of the country. • The father of the modern outdoor movement is widely considered to be author, preacher, and sportsman William H. H. Murray. He published the watershed book on camping called Adventures in the Wilderness; or, Camp Life in the Adirondacks. That book made camping accessible to the masses for the first time – might be an interesting read.
