From The Editor’s Desk. It’s probably not a surprise that I’m an advocate for newspapers. Don’t get me wrong, there are bloggers and online sites I visit regularly for news, but nothing beats the insight and in-depth reporting of an actual tangible print newspaper. There has recently been much vitriol directed at the media, sometimes with just cause, often without. Whether it’s pundits who consider the mass media biased or analysts who insist on writing print media’s obituary over and over for the past decade or so, the industry has certainly taken a bit of a beating. But, while on the ropes, newspapers aren’t out of the fight yet and many newspapers are adapting and changing – some for the better, but far too many are changing for ill. Why, you may ask, am I once again ruminating about the fate of the print journalism industry? One of the greats seems to be faltering. The Times-Picayune, the only daily (for now) paper in New Orleans announced on May 24th that the print edition would only be published 3 days a week starting in the fall of 2012 and a majority of the editorial staff would be let go. The TimesPicayune isn’t just any paper, over their 175-year

history they’ve won numerous Pulitzer Prizes and were home to some names you may have heard of: William Faulkner, O. Henry, photographer Ted Williams who documented the devastation after Hurricane Katrina in 2006, and Edgar Allen Poe who was their national correspondent. Much of the Picayune staff, many of whom are now presumably unemployed, weathered the deadly hurricane and subsequent flooding sleeping on the floor of their newsroom, keeping the Katrina evacuees updated on what was happening to their city and their neighbors. I can’t imagine too many bloggers that would put their lives on the line for their profession (there are exceptions of course). Now to get off my soapbox, one final point: internet writers produce “art” like 50 Shades of Grey by blogger E.L. James (I’d use a pseudonym too), while newspaper journalists have written works like The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner or For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway. Do bloggers have a place? Sure, but it’s not to replace newspapers or journalists. That’s why I’m so grateful to work for the Town & Country Gazette. Admittedly, we might not be opening a foreign bureau anytime soon, but we’re proud to have the support of our local community and, hopefully, bring you interesting news for years to come. Remember, every time you pick up a Gazette and visit one of the many local business that help keep us going you’re supporting local print media, and I can’t say thank you enough. While some local papers, including the two big dailies in Philly and The Times Leader in WilkesBarre, who I’ve reported for in the past, are showing signs of weakness in the face of declining readership and ad revenue; we’re doing better than ever and starting to expand and adapt to a new era in publishing. Our new and improved website, which will be up soon, along with our already heavy social media presence helps us to release news to you instantly and allows you to give us feedback on what you guys like and would like to see improved. Let’s keep this community growing and keep print alive. (I was so busy ranting and raving I nearly forgot - Happy Father’s Day Dad!) Students create New Website

Animal Fest a Success!

The new Northern Lehigh Historical Society website is up and running. A huge "Thank You" to NLHS member Vanessa Meleski and her team of Lehigh Carbon Community College students who tackled the creation of the website as a class project. The url is http://www.nlhistoricalsociety.org. Please bookmark the site in your Favorites and check for periodic updates of NLHS activities.

About 60 people came to see the First Animal Fest sponsored by the Northern Lehigh Community Center Held at the Northern Lehigh Middle School auditorium on May 29 at 7pm. It was quite an educational night with nearly 20 animals on display. Northwestern Student Awarded Scholarship

The Lehigh County 4-H Development Fund Board has awarded a Northwestern Lehigh student a scholarship. Jordan Rassler, daughter of Bryan and Robin Rassler, will graduate from Northwestern Lehigh High School in June and expects to study elementary and special education at Kutztown University. She has been a member of the Lehigh County 4-H Dairy and Beef and Dairy Beef Club for 10 years. Jordan feels that all of her experiences in 4-H have helped her to select her major because she has enjoyed teaching the younger members of her 4-H clubs. Jordan has served as president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary of her clubs. She has competed in local, district, and state 4-H Dairy Shows. She has 10 dairy animals in her herd of registered Red and White Holsteins. Jordan has also received a number of awards for her

projects and overall 4-H participation including Outstanding Junior 4-H'er. Jordan is a member of a family with a strong 4-H history. This year, Pennsylvania 4-H celebrates its centennial. It is fitting for Jordan to receive this award as many of her relatives have received similar awards. We congratulate Jordan as we celebrate the rich history of 4-H in Pennsylvania. Jordan will receive her award at the annual Lehigh County 4-H Achievement Night in November. 4-H provides hands-on learning in a wide variety of subject areas for boys and girls, ages 8 - 18. It is part of the youth development programming of Penn State Extension. For more information about 4-H, contact the 4-H coordinator, weekdays, at 610-391-9840.

Tips For High School Graduates

(NAPS)—School may soon be out if you are a graduating senior, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have homework. Here are some tips to help you navigate the new responsibilities in your life: • Discuss your career goals with counselors, teachers and family and ask their advice. • Gather information on careers that interest you. Talk with people who are working in those occupations and find out what it takes to succeed. • Create a résumé to use in job application and create a list of admission requirements for schools you would like to attend. • If you are a young man, register with the Selective Service System. Remember, registration is required by law within 30 days of turning 18. You can register by mail, at the U.S. Postal Service or online with a smartphone or computer. Simply log on to www.sss.gov and click on the registration icon. years old, in good health, and able to walk for an hour at a time. They must successfully complete a volunteer training session, provided by H.H.T.L.C. While experience with horses and/or people with disabilities is helpful, it is not necessary. H.H.T.L.C. also welcomes the volunteer assistance of allied health fields professionals and people with horse experience. H.H.T.L.C. serves riders with a wide variety of disabilities. Therapeutic horseback riding has been shown to improve balance, posture, strength, and coordination. It also helps to increase selfawareness, self-confidence, attention span, and independence. Often, riders also gain improved social skills. H.H.T.L.C. will hold a required volunteer training session for lesson volunteers on Saturday, June 16th, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the center. Anyone who wishes to volunteer to help with riding lessons must attend this hands-on training. In addition to lesson volunteers, H.H.T.L.C. also needs volunteers to assist with other duties. If you would like to become a volunteer, contact Janie Miller at 570-386-4280 or wintsprg@ptd.net.

Blood Drive

Miller-Keystone Blood Center will conduct its bi-monthly community blood drive in Palmerton on Tuesday, June 12th from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ, next to Palmerton Boro Hall. This visit is sponsored by William and Marilyn Kissner. Previous donors can expect a phone call and/or e-mail message, reminding them of the visit, and asking them to make an appointment. Although walk-ins are welcome, those with appointments are given priority at Registration. We expect to have two Trima machines available, and plan to have appointments for each time segment, to get the most use from the machines and minimize waiting times for donors. II you want to donate blood components, please call George Ashman at 610-826-2097 to schedule your time. Although Palmerton is blessed with many "regular"donors, who appear for nearly every blood drive, new donors are always needed. Minimum requirements are: 17 years old,110 pounds, general good health, and no body piercing or tattoos within the last 12 months. School students are reminded that parental permission is not required. First-time Miller donors should bring photo ID, such as a driver's license. Previous Miller donors are reminded to bring their Miller cards.

Palmerton Area Library Looking for Volunteers

The Palmerton Area Library is looking for volunteers in a number of areas at the library. The Used Book Sale in the basement is completely run by volunteers but the donations have been coming in faster than the small group can handle. All proceeds from the Book Sale go directly to the library and help make up some of the funding lost in recent years from the state. The volunteers sort the books, discard unsuitable items, and place them on the shelves for purchase by the public. If you have an hour or 2 per week to help with this resource the staff at the library will train you and answer all your questions. Work in the Book Sale can be done on your own time, schedule during regular library hours. The library also has other ways volunteers can help. You can adopt a shelf and keep your shelf in order by visiting the library every 2 weeks to maintain it. If you like scrapbooking we are looking for a volunteer to keep up the library scrapbook with articles we clip from the newspapers and other items. Celebrate Flag Day with the Slatington Public Library! Mr. William Leickel will present the video, Vane Scott’s Many Faces of Old Glory “the concert”, This show is entertaining and informative and explains how we got our American flag and the American history that resulted in it’s creation. The presentation will take place on Tuesday, June 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the library. The summer Wonderful World of Wildlife story hour will begin on Wednesday, June 20 at 10 am. Summer Reading Fun

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." (Jacqueline Kennedy) The Slatington Public Library is committed to community literacy. We know reading is a necessary skill and we want our children, ages 4-12, to have some fun while they continue to read during the summer months when school is not in session. Our reading incentive program is a fun way for children to read and be recognized. “Growing a Garden of Readers” runs from June 9 through August 18. In order to participate, you only need to join the Slatington Public Library, borrow a book, complete a book response form, and color a paper flower for display in our library. You do not need to attend

the kick-off and closing events to participate. Book response forms are available in the library and on the library’s website. Flower templates are available at the Librarian’s desk and include a space for child’s name and title of book. Our goal is to adorn our library with lots of flowers! Participants select a nearly new or gently used book for every 10 books they read. Parents and children, please join us at the Slatington Public Library on June 9th from 10:00 to 11:30 am as we kick-off our summer reading incentive program – “Growing A Garden Of Readers!” The kick-off event includes a story, mini-tour of the library, featured books for summer reading, and membership sign-ups. A special guest will provide us with some gardening basics and all participants will select and pot a plant. Sign-ups are preferred (call 610-767-6461) and parents are welcome to accompany their children. On August 18th, 10-11:30 a.m., we will have a special readers’ celebration event for all our “Growing a Garden of Readers”participants. Mark your calendars! Google “Slatington Public Library” or call us at 610-767-6461 for more information.

New Family Driver

Martin had just received his brand new drivers license. The family troops out to the driveway, and climbs in the car, where he is going to take them for a ride for the first time. Dad immediately heads for the back seat, directly behind the newly minted driver. “I’ll bet you’re back there to get a change of scenery after all those months of sitting in the front passenger seat teaching me how to drive,” says the beaming boy to his father. “Nope,” comes dad’s reply, “I’m gonna sit here and kick the back of your seat as you drive, just like you’ve been doing to me all these years.”

AP Scholar Plaque Dedication By Alice Wanamaker

On Thursday May 24 at Northampton Area High School the long awaited Advanced Placement Scholars plaques were dedicated. The plaques feature the names of students who have or who will graduate from Northampton High School and have been recognized as Advanced Placement Scholars. The plaques were funded by the National Honor Society Powder Puff Football game against Catty. Since the program began in the high school in 1991, over 160 students have achieved AP Scholar Status. The levels of achievement and requirements include; AP Scholar: Granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams, AP Scholar with Honor: Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams, AP Scholar with Distinction: Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams and National AP Scholar: Granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

The class of 2012 will graduate John Veiszlemlein, Valedictorian and Nationally recognized AP National Scholar. John is among only eight other students who have graduated from Northampton to achieve this level or recognition. Superintendent Kovalchik was at the dedication ceremony to congratulate the students. He noted that the achievement of these students is not something that happens overnight. 4571 CLOVER HILL CIRCLE SERVING THE GREATER LEHIGH VALLEY

Lewe am uffgucke iss, will nau Russian teache die Summer an Franklin un Marshall Kollege. Gut glick, Bill. Wann deel vun unsere Deitsche mol Russian schwetze kenne, dann schtelle sie selli Kommunists mol ee Daag in die Roi. -Florence Baver May 26, 1960 What fun it can be when we get into a debate; that is, if it’s a friendly one. Already we often heard people talk about whether as much Dutch is spoken now as 20 years ago or whether less is. That subject came up recently when the [Bushkill] Fersammle Committee met at the home of Roy F… Some said not [less], and some said “Yes, more like long already.” We agree with the latter. Not too long ago we had a [Dutch] program at the Fork’s Union Church and we closed the service with “What a Friend we have in Jesus.” A girl about 12 came to us before we went home and said,“I could not read it [the Dutch] but I sang anyhow.” That speaks for itself, doesn’t it? It certainly always humors us when newcomers to our area like to earn money quickly using the Pennsylvania Dutch culture. Over in Berks County is an ice cream stand that every week advertises in the local paper as having pizza. They call that stand ‘The Dischdelfink Freeze’. One does a double take when they drive by: a sign on the roof saying ‘Dischdelfink’ and a sign in the window announcing ‘pizza’. One of the Dutch women from Nazareth would like to know how we say ‘germ’ in Dutch. Do you people know? [Some say ‘Keim’, but that refers more to a seed or sprout; I have seen ‘Grankheetkeim’, one word, used for bacteria. Translator] Just as uncommon as Dischdelfink and pizza to be mixed together, so also uncommon that Dr. William Frey, who for years researched Dutch folkways and customs, now would teach a summer course in the Russian language at Franklin and Marshall College. Good luck, Bill. If some of our Pennsylvania Dutch could speak Russian, then they would straighten out those Communists one day.

Free Child-ID program

On Saturday, June 9, the Lehigh Township Historical Society is sponsoring a combined Miniature Golf Day and a Child ID Event. Activities begin at 11 a.m. at the Blue Mountain Drive-In, Blue Mountain Drive, Danielsville. In case of rain, the event will be held the next day, Sunday, June 10. Tickets are available for this fun event! A $5 ticket entitles you to a free hot dog, beverage, and one game of golf. Special rates for families. Delicious ice cream will be available for purchase all day long. There will be lots of prizes and special prizes will be awarded to the "good" golfers with a hole-in-one. Miniature golf is an outdoor game for all ages. It provides exercise in the fresh air and is enjoyable for the whole family. Besides the regular game of miniature golf, there will be a Chip and Putt game for all ages where you can test your skills. There will be train rides for the kids. A 50/50 drawing will be held for the adults. A new feature this year, sponsored by the owners of the Blue Mountain Drive-In, will be the Child ID Community Program from 11 to 3 p.m. The ID process will be done by the Lehigh Valley Community Resource Center. The system used employs advanced digital technology to capture and store high definition forensic quality fingerprinting, photos, and physical descriptions

of the child and youth, a video recording and voice print. All information is compatible with the Pennsylvania Amber Alert System. Pertinent information is downloaded to a CD and given to the parent or guardian. This is an easy process to provide you with an identification for your children. The ID card can be used when travelling, can assist police in case of a problem, and will save valuable time should a need arise when personal information is needed. To ensure a child's safety, law enforcement officers highly recommend that children carry child ID cards. Take advantage of the opportunity on June 9 for the "free" Child ID. The society is seeking sponsors for the golf day. If you would like to be a sponsor, please send a donation (any $ amount), with your name, address and phone number to LTHS, P. O. Box 727, Cherryville, PA 18035. If you would like to sponsor a certain hole, let us know. Donors' names or businesses will be listed on signs. Also, you may sponsor a hole in honor of someone or in memory of a loved one, let us know. Names will be listed at the eighteen holes throughout the day. We hope you will support the LTHS fundraiser and that you will benefit from the special Child ID service provided. Come out to Blue Mountain Drive-In, bring your family and friends and enjoy the day. For tickets, call 610-767-5906 or 610-7676379. For more information, call 610-767-5906. Thank you for your support!

THE PROBLEM.

THE SOLUTION.

All new and existing masonry substrates are susceptible to water damage and, even if repaired, will continue to deteriorate if not protected.

ChimneySaver is the first water repellent specifically developed to protect masonry chimneys from severe weather conditions.

Protect Your Investment

There are approximately 40 million masonry chimneys in North America and the most common problem with these structures is water penetration. Water causes over a billion dollars in damage annually in the form of staining, loss of insulation value, freeze-thaw damage, deterioration, and ultimately structural failure.

Severe spalling and deterioration is caused by water penetration.

Efflorescence stains caused by water penetration and leaching salts are unsightly and add to deterioration.

Water penetration and freeze/thaw damage result in loss of insulation value and lead to structural failure.

Use On All Masonry Surfaces

Not just for chimneys, ChimneySaver® water repellent is the ideal choice for protecting all residential and commercial above-grade masonry. ChimneySaver is the best solution for a variety of exterior masonry applications including patios, walkways, pool decks, and wall systems.

ChimneySaver is a WATER REPELLENT - not a water sealer. The difference could save you hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars in repairs because sealers can actually damage masonry. Unlike waterproofing sealers that remain on the surface, ChimneySaver penetrates deep enough to protect masonry from destructive water penetration while maintaining the structure’s vapor permeability.

Superior Technology ChimneySaver contains patented siloxanes small enough to penetrate most masonry pores up to 1/4” or more. These special siloxanes form strong bonds with the silica in masonry and concrete. Because of this bonding process, one application of ChimneySaver provides up to ten times the water repellent protection of typical sealers while maintaining the masonry’s breathability. Moisture from a variety of sources is always present in masonry and concrete. Sealers and silicone coatings form a water resistant surface film which traps water vapors inside. If these vapors cannot escape, they will contribute to spalling, scaling, deterioration, and freeze-thaw damage. ChimneySaver is 100% vapor permeable - a nonfilm-forming water repellent that penetrates and lines masonry pores.

100% Breathable • 10 Year Guarantee • No Darkening of Masonry

Northern Lehigh Historical Marker Brochure Unveiled A historical marker brochure was unveiled on Tuesday May 29 at the Victory Park Historical Marker, in Victory Park Slatington. The brochure, a welcome addition to the other brochures that have been produced in the last few years, is the culmination of the Northern Lehigh Historical Markers Program (NLHMP), which began in 2006. The brochure was a project of the historic preservation task force of the NL Future Focus. The task force saw this brochure as the next logical step after Slatington was recognized as a National Register Historic District in 2004. The multi-colored brochure lists all the state and local historical markers in the Northern Lehigh area, which encompasses the boroughs of Slatington & Walnutport and Washington Township. The 38 markers listed in the brochure give a brief history of the people, places and things, which are historically significant to the region as well as highlighting the towns comprising the area and local industries that helped the area grow and prosper. Also included in the brochure are brief histories of Slatington, Walnutport and Slatedale along with a simple map of the three towns. The brochure provides a driving tour of the Northern Lehigh area, beginning at Slatington Borough Hall and ending at the Slatington Trailhead. The brochure was originally compiled and designed by NL High school graduate Brandilynn Smith as part of her graduation requirements. The update and final design and was done by Communication Design students at Kutztown University as part of the 2011 Design-A- Thon. Printed by Parkland Bindery of Allentown and funded equally by the three municipalities, approximately 3000 brochures were printed. “I would like to thank the three municipalities that make up the Northern Lehigh area. They really stepped up and each one donated $300 towards the printing of the brochure said Robert Stettner at the unveiling. The brochures are available for free to the public at the Slatington, Walnutport, and Washington Township municipal offices. They are also available at various businesses throughout the area.

COURAGEOUS Movie at Northampton Assembly of God You are invited to see the stirring COURAGEOUS movie at Northampton Assembly of God, 3449 Cherryville Road, Northampton, on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17 at 6:00 p.m. COURAGEOUS particularly strengthens the family by challenging fathers to have the courage to bravely fulfill their leadership role as a father and meet their God-given responsibilities to their children. It was created with the motivation to call men to rise up to the Biblical standard of manhood, to serve their wives and children, and to be pillars of integrity in the community. This is the story of four law officers who discover leading a family takes even more bravery than fighting crime. COURAGEOUS captures the heart of the father, calling him to Christ as he seeks to be a better dad. This movie provides a great opportunity to reach out socially and spiritually to friends, neighbors, and co-workers by inviting them to attend this showing of COURAGEOUS. Pastor Daniel E. Lundmark cordially invites the public to attend.

Pawprints on the Canal, A Barking Good Time!

For the fourth year in a row, the first Sunday of June went to the dogs at Northampton’s Canal park. Hundreds of four legged friends brought their owners out to the event and many of them stuck around in the rain. The event brings dogs, dog lovers and rescue groups together for a day of learning, fun and barking! Once again Zoro and Officer Mullner of the Northampton PD stopped by and demonstrated their talents. It takes Zoro almost no time at all to find drugs and contraband under Officer Mullner’s command. Vendors, pet rescues and pet health care representatives also came out for the event. There were dog agility demonstrations, a pet rescue parade and the crowd favorite pet trick contest. While everyone did well, Lori Smith and her yellow lab Sadie took home first prize in the trick contest. Many of the pets that came out for the day were dressed in their Sunday best. Brynn Haynes brought her poodle Frost to the event. Frost was sporting a new hairdo and color courtesy of Brynn and her staff at Bark and Bubbles in Egypt. Organizers said despite the late afternoon rain, the event was a complete success. They and attendees are already looking forward to the 5th annual event in 2013.

BWC Groundbreaking! On Sunday night, May 20, Bethany Wesleyan Church in Cherryville held a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of a new multi-purpose building to be built next to the current facilities. For this momentous, once-in-a-lifetime occasion, a turbo- charged 102 horsepower, 315C Caterpillar Excavator took the first scoop surrounded by 800+ people gathered to witness the occasion! This multi-purpose facility will be able to seat 1200 people, allow dining for 800 or accommodate a full basketball/volleyball court. Though our facilities will take on a new look, our mission remains the same.....to present Jesus Christ to people in a relevant way. The evening was topped off with a 25 minute spectacular fireworks display by LTNT Pyrotechs, Inc of Walnutport! The fireworks could be seen and heard for miles around! We give thanks to God for giving us a perfect night for this event.

Slices of Life - Equal time for the dog By: Jill Pertler

Hey everybody! Hiya! Glad to see you! It’s me, the dog. Wag. Wag. Excuse my tail. It’s always knocking things over. I can’t help myself. I get so happy and when I get happy my tail sort of takes on a life of its own. I’ve wanted to share my viewpoint on some issues, but the two cats I live with don’t allow me access to the computer. They say I slobber all over the keyboard. What do they know? They’re felines, nothing more than felines. Shhh! I think I hear one of them coming. I don’t want to get caught. Their claws are sharp. Speaking of things getting caught… I love playing FETCH! OUTSIDE… with my BALL! Loveit. Loveit. Loveit! Oops, I got a little sidetracked and my tail almost took out a framed photograph of the cats. Sorry about that. You aren’t mad at me, are you? I can feel my ears and tail drooping at the thought of upsetting a human with my behavior. If I could, I’d be invisible right now. I’m sorry. Really, really, really sorry. Remind me, what did I do? I forget. Did I make a mess again? Forgive me? Please? It’s in my nature to want to make you happy. I LOVE humans! My tail’s wagging just thinking about humans. I love when my master pats me on the head. I love when he takes me for walks. I love when he scratches my tummy. I love when he says my name. I love when he looks at me. I love when he walks into the room. I especially love sniffing his socks. I love him SO much! Best of all, my humans give me FOOD! I LOVE FOOD! Loving food is almost as good as loving humans. Almost. Cats, on the other paw, are difficult to love. Believe me, I’ve given them my best canine effort. I try playing with them by chasing them around the house, but all they do is hide under the furniture and snarl. Then they call me a smelly old dog when I roll in a beautiful pile of poo I found in the backyard. I don’t stink, do I? I wouldn’t mind sharing my house with the cats,

if we were on equal ground. I am the loyal one. I am kind. I am filled with canine integrity. I LOVE my humans and am not afraid to show it. The cats are none of these things, yet they enjoy privileges I can only dream about. (And I do dream, by the way.) The cats prance around like they own the place (rumor is they do). They jump up on tables and countertops and look down their noses at me. They enjoy the benefits of an indoor bathroom and have even figured out a scheme to get the humans to clean it. They sleep on the furniture, not on the floor under the bed. They never, ever get in trouble for eating garbage or dragging their hind end on the carpet. What am I supposed to do when I need to scratch an itch? With the cats around, I get no respect. Growl. If I weren’t so devoted to my humans, I’d help my cats get rid of a few of their nine lives, if you catch my drift. Woof. Woof. Unfortunately, that idea wouldn’t be pleasing to my humans. It’s quite mysterious, but for whatever baffling and unfathomable reasons, the humans display tremendous affection for the cats. I think the cats have put the humans under an evil spell, but I’m not sure. To be honest, my cats scare me. So, I let them drink out of my water dish and mistreat me in any way they can. Of course this is all part of my grand plan, which I will let you in on as soon as I think of it. Hey… TREAT! Did you hear someone say TREAT? I thought I did, but I’m never sure. The old ears aren’t what they used to be. It could be the cats. They are always playing tricks on me. I better go check to be sure. Wouldn’t want to miss out on a TREAT! Did I mention I love TREATS? Wag. Wag. Oh darn. There goes my tail again…

Lehigh Gap Nature Center Offering Watercolor Courses Lehigh Gap Nature Center is offering a watercolor painting course for beginners and an additional session for intermediate and advanced painters. The instructor is watercolor artist Kay Stauffer, whose work is currently being exhibited at the Heller Homestead in Hellertown, PA. The beginners course consists of four classes and will introduce watercolor media and technical handling of materials. It will also cover preparation of papers and applying color with washes and textural effects -- everything a beginner should know about watercolor. The natural beauty of the Lehigh Gap Nature Center surroundings will be the source of inspiration for instructor demonstrations and student practice pieces The classes will occur on 4 Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in June and July at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center's Osprey House. The dates of the classes are June 14 and 21 and July 12 and 19. The cost for Nature Center members is $20 and for nonmembers is $40 (and will include a basic level membership). In addition, there will be a one-day intermediate to advanced watercolor workshop on Sunday, July 29 from 12:30-4:40 p.m. This one-day workshop will help develop your visual expression and will work on applying paint, glazing and further

textural effects using the natural areas around the Center as subject matter. Advice on composition, color interpretation, and attention to your individual style will help build confidence with these media. The cost for this workshop is also $20 for members and $40 for nonmembers (with a basic level membership included). After registering for either class, you will receive a materials supply list for the course. You can purchase the recommended materials at local stores such as AC Moore, Michael's, or the Blick Store. Paper can be purchased at the workshop for $4.85 per 22" x 30" sheet. To register for either of both of these courses, or for more information, contact LGNC at 610-7608889 or lgnc@ptd.net.

A Medical Warning for Video Gamers (NU) - Video gamers who participate in marathon sessions may be putting their health at risk. In May 2011, a 20-year-old video gamer from England died when a blood clot formed in his leg and moved to his lungs. The man often remained in the same position playing video games for 12 hours straight. “Movement is essential for proper blood flow,” said Anil Hingorani, MD, a member of the So- ciety for Vascular Surgery. “Sit- ting in the same position for long periods of time -- whether playing video games or cramped in a car or on an airplane -- can result in pooling of the blood in the veins. Blood clots known as deep vein thromboses (DVT) can form.” The 2011 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics reveal that 300,000 to 600,000 Americans die each year from blood clots in the lungs. In 2003, 39-year-old NBC News reporter David Bloom died when a blood clot in his leg traveled to his lungs. The clot formed after weeks of driving around Baghdad in a cramped military tank. “Stand up and stretch,” advis- es Dr. Hingorani. “Walk around. Raise and lower your heels and

toes. Tighten and release your leg muscles. This will help promote blood flow.” DVTs usually occur in persons who are sick and have had long hospital stays. The risk factors for DVTs include the following: * obesity * a history of heart attacks * strokes * congestive heart failure * inflammatory bowel disease Women who are pregnant, nursing or taking birth control pills are also at increased risk for DVTs. Half of DVT patients do not experience the warning signs, which include: * swelling * tenderness * leg pain * a sensation of warmth * skin that turns blue or red Ultrasound tests can detect blood clots. Treatment options typically use anticoagulant medication. For additional information about DVTs or other vascular health conditions, visit www.VascularWeb.org.

All Star Cheer National Champs

Storm All-Star Cheering is based at the Tumble with Denise gym in Lehighton. With girls from all over the area including Northwestern, Palmerton, Lehighton, and Parkland just to name a few, the group recently traveled to Virginia Beach to participate in their first National Competition. Storm sent two teams to the competition, a youth

team and a junior team. The Junior team came home National Champs! On May 5, Storm All-Stars competed at the US Finals cheerleading competition in Virginia Beach. Both teams competed against teams from all over the east coast including New York, Virginia and Maryland. The youth team (11 girls from ages 6-11) placed fifth place (out of five teams). The Junior team (15 girls from ages 8-14) placed first out of five teams and are now National Champions. Each girl on the Junior team each received a medal and a US Finals National Champion Jacket. The road to the National championship is a long one; the girls begin practicing far in advance for the competition. The teams started practicing in September and began competing in January. They qualified for the National competition on February 4 at the Keystone Classic competition in Lancaster when both teams placed first. Practice continued until the National competition. Following the US Finals competitions, the teams are ranked according to score within their division. The junior team was ranked third out of eleven teams in their division. Storm is having team placements for our 20122013 season on June 30 at TWD. They are always looking for new girls to join the team! Please feel free to email them at StormCheering@gmail.com or check out their website at www.NacaCheering. webs.com for more information.

Roller Derby Revival! With the revival of women’s roller derby sweeping the nation, the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls were established in January 2006 with the hope of bringing the thrill and excitement of the game to the Valley. The Lehigh Valley Rollergirls are the area’s only women’s flat track roller derby league, and have rapidly grown from just a handful of women meeting at open skates to full WFTDA members with two currently competing travel teams. LVRG has received much attention from local media outlets and traveled to Montreal in June 2007 to play in one of the first international roller derby bouts since the revival of the sport. This non-profit, skater-owned and operated league is

dedicated to promoting strong women and the spirit of sisterhood, both on and off the track. When not in the rink, the girls can often be found at various community events in the area. Created for the skaters by the skaters, the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls are dedicated to providing an opportunity for women athletes to achieve their maximum potential, both athletically and intellectually through the sport of roller derby. Through intensive training, competitive activities and community involvement, the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls strive to embody specific core values including hard work, motivation, perseverance, respect for cultural diversity and continuous personal development. The members are proud to be positive role models for young people by displaying a sense of good sportsmanship, personal integrity and ethical conduct and look forward to continued growth regionally. Currently the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls league has two teams; the Hissy Fits and the Special Vixens Unit that compete at the Independence Family Fun Center in Schnecksville and at different venues around the country. The next home bout is Saturday June 9th at 6 p.m. and doors open at 5p.m. The bout is an intra league bout, where LVRG Black take on LVRG Pink. Lucien Fest Held on Beautiful Day The 4th annual Duane J. Lucien Benefit Festival was held on Saturday May 19th at the Walnutport Playground. The festival moved back to the playground after being held at the covered bridge for the last two years. Many people came out to help honor Duane’s life and celebrate the legacy he has left behind. Hundreds of people came out to the daylong festival and enjoyed great music and entertainment including the sounds of locals Mike & Dillan Peters and Droppin Trou. The festival also featured After the Bar A Capella and headliners Levee Drivers. The kids enjoyed the day with a magic show, a moon bounce and face painting. Other entertainment included the Northern Lehigh Cheerleaders, Emerald Dragon Karate and a juggling performance by one of Duane’s closest friends, Alex Kowalcyck. Following the festival, the 2012 Duane J. Lucien Scholarship recipients were announced. This year Laura Grammes and Kirsten Leskowich were chosen as the recipients of $1,000 scholarships. Congratulations go out the recipients who have shown qualities similar to the legacy Duane left behind; exuberance for life, determination in the athletic arena and motivation.
