From The Editor’s Desk. This is our second annual Home Improvement/Lawn & Garden issue, with lots of local contractors and professionals to get whatever work you need around your house done well. Having lived in apartments for the last 10 years or so, I generally don’t do too much “home improvement” beyond calling my landlord when something needs fixing and my yard usually consists of the sidewalk. So, needless to say, I need to get creative when it comes to landscaping or gardening. The main problem is that I kill literally every plant that I come in contact with. I have whatever the opposite of a green thumb is. Even supposedly indestructible greenery, like Bonsai trees and Yucca plants, will meet an untimely demise when left in my care. Plants and I don’t get along, and this fact makes my project this spring even more ambitious. I’m planning on starting a small garden to save some cash and get fresh herbs and produce. I’ve been cooking more and have found that I really enjoy it. I’m always looking for new recipes and techniques to try and having fresh, organic ingredients on hand will be a big help. So far,

Joe Korba

I’ve only procured some of what I’m planning on growing. I’m starting small in case all of the plants die by my hand before producing any viable products. So far I just bought some herb starter kits, but I plan on getting a couple tomato plants and building a window box for my balcony. My girlfriend is apprehensive, because she’s on my level when it comes to plant care. But, I plan to prove the skeptics wrong and, one day, cook with veggies that I’ve grown myself. I’ll keep you guys updated on my progress unless nothing even sprouts. In that case I’ll resign myself, in shame, to the produce section in the grocery store for good and pretend I never wrote this piece. I hope you guys enjoy this issue as always and don’t forget to vote in our Second Annual Reader’s Poll for Best Restaurant either online or using the form in this issue. Also, if you haven’t already added the Gazette as a friend on Facebook, get on that. We have a pretty active page and are always looking to expand our online community. Are you ready to make more history? Then please get out a calendar and pen to write down the date for the second running of the Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Marathon/Half-Marathon. The date is Sunday, November 4, 2012. And there's a new starting time to jot down, too - 8 a.m. Last year’s inaugural races were received exceptionally well. We had a 98% satisfaction rate on our post-race survey and lots of runners set new personal records. You’ll be happy to know we’ve kept all the good stuff you liked – including the predominantly flat course - and taken your constructive comments to heart. Here are some of the noteworthy changes and enhancements to this year’s event and course: 1. A new starting location
2. Pre-race parking close to the starting line; no more morning shuttles, only after the race is over.
3. Chip timing for everyone
4. An Increase in registration from 500 to 750. Once again, runners will have a beautiful route to follow along the D&L Trail, nearby spur trails, and the scenic Lehigh River. This unique course passes through three counties and multiple communities. So. get ready to join your neighbors, friends and runners from across the United States in the 2012 Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Marathon/ Half-Marathon. Registration will open soon on our website http://www.delawareandlehigh.org/ marathon/.

The Bible

It is a common misconception that Moses “authored” the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures. Moses is responsible for inspiring or originating many of the stories contained in the Pentateuch, but he did not actually pen them. For many, many generations the stories contained in the Pentateuch were handed down from generation to generation orally, through the tradition of storytelling. It wasn’t until much later that these stories were actually written down (obviously, not by Moses himself). During those many generations of telling the stories, there developed different groups or communities within Judaism, and some variations in the stories that were passed down. Eventually, when they were written down, the men who put them together elected in some instances to mix information from the various traditions together, or tell the story twice ..…perhaps in different parts of the Pentateuch. For example, there are two stories of Creation and two recordings of the Ten Commandments. The Story of Noah and the Ark seems to be a mixture of at least two traditions into one story. There are factual reports within that story that do not seem to make sense unless you recognize that there are similar stories which have been blended together. Since Americans read the stories in English, we are often unaware of the differences that really come out when the stories are read in their original Hebrew language. Most Americans are unaware that there are often two or more accounts of the same story in the Bible, probably because we are so use to hearing the stories blended into one and don’t read our Bibles. That this should happen should not surprise us, because we do the same thing in Christianity without even realizing it. For instance, when we retell the stories of the Nativity and Easter Week, we almost always blend the stories as they are recorded in the four Gospel accounts. We do this also with many of the healing stories and teachings of Jesus. If you were to read from only one Gospel account of a story, chances are there would be noticeable “gaps” or “details” you would recognize as having been “left out”. The Bible(s) used in Christian churches have but one goal, record the ‘History of our Salvation’ and bring us closer to ‘The God who Saves’. Come Easter morning, may you too find the Resurrected Christ! - Pastor Brian R. Holben Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trachsville

Senior Citizens Corner Northampton Senior Center

Northampton Senior Center hosted a low key Valentine's Day party for visitors. They really whooped it up for Leap Day. Our "Sadie Hawkins" party was a success, with no proposals that I'm aware of. Musical entertainment with the Cracked Walnuts was the perfect compliment to our theme that day. Lots of hillbillies and rednecks showed up. A keg of birch beer compliments of Tanczos Beverage was a real treat to add to all the goodies available that day. March happenings include "The Hinkle Family" entertaining us on the 15th at 10:30 am. Spring Break will be on the 20th, we will be wearing our favorite college shirts. (Gee, Moravian or Villanova?) Tom Vicario will be taking us to the Photos beach with his special music at 10:30 am. Of course we don't party everyday, but we do (clockwise from upper left) enjoy getting together with our friends for social, recreational, informative speakers and meals. Happy Saint Patrick's Day! I love to visit the island of Ireland. It is a beautiful, emerald green land surrounded by lovely ocean water, which makes it easy for me to travel all around it. I really like to visit on the holiday of St. Patrick so I can watch the celebrations.

The Christian holiday honoring the patron saint of Ireland is religious as well as fun. St. Patrick, who was not Irish, came to Ireland as a missionary to teach Christianity. He used the three-leaf shamrock as a symbol to explain how the Father, Son and Holy Spirit were ‘three, yet one." Each year, there is a day to remember St. Patrick and enjoy the customs and foods of the Irish. Many cities hold parades and many people wear green to join in the fun. Do you know any Irish folktales or songs?

I think talking dolphins might be real. After all I can talk!

Apology Needed

A customer at a counter of a garden ornament shop said to the cashier, “Give me four of those pinwheels, two of those pink flamingos, two of those sunflowers, and one of those bent-over grandmas in bloomers.” The cashier replied “that’ll be eight dollars for the pinwheels, ten for the flamingos, six for the sunflowers, and an apology for my wife!”

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

The Coaching Carousel is in Motion

• There is a new era beginning in the Northampton football program. For the last five seasons, Bob Steckel has been the head coach of the K-Kids. During his five years on the sidelines he accumulated a record of 26-32. Steckel resigned after last season citing he would like to pursue other opportunities. The new era began in late February when the Northampton Area School District School Board unanimously voted to approve Jeff Brosky as the new head football coach. Brosky may be new to the head coaching position, but has been on sidelines of many Friday night varsity football games. After graduating in 1979 from Central Catholic, Brosky was a cornerback at East Stroudsburg University. In 13 of his 21 seasons as a football coach, he held the position of Defensive Coordinator. A few of Brosky’s premier stops on the coaching carousel were Freedom, Central Catholic, Whitehall and Emmaus. This is Brosky’s second stint at Northampton as he was an assistant coach from 1996-1999. Brosky is focused on moving forward with the program and he isn’t putting too much thought into the dim past, “Every program goes through a time of struggle. Hopefully that time is past and we can begin moving things in the right direction here at Northampton.” Steckel’s record was around the .500 mark, but there weren’t any signs of imminent improvement as the team ended the 2011 campaign with a 3-9 record. We are only in March, but football is a year round sport with all the off-season programs. That constant workload keeps players and coaches busy. Brosky told me he is working on starting things quickly, “[I want] to first build trust with all the athletes and get them excited about playing football here [and] develop a strong work ethic and commitment to both the weight room and the program in general. [Then I want] to find leaders who buy into the system and use that as a catalyst towards success. Motivation, enthusiasm and preparation will be major points of focus for [our] staff and players.” There is no doubt that Brosky, who teaches physical education at Whitehall, knows football. He has the ability to become a very successful head coach in Lehigh Valley Conference. Don’t expect an immediate turnaround however. Give him a few years to implement his system and then

look for the K-Kids to be shining on the gridiron. • Another coaching change for Northampton happened recently, but this one affected the K-Kids that play on the hardwood. Head basketball coach, Ed Ohlson, has resigned from his position. He was 89-106 in eight years for Northampton. Ohlson had some highlights during his tenure, including his 21-9 record in the 2007-08 season. His team made it to the AAAA District 11 semi-final and qualified for the state tournament that year. Ohlson’s squad struggled this past season with an 8-14 record. At the time of printing, a replacement had not yet been announced. Earlier this month another coaching change happened in the Colonial League. Northwestern Lehigh introduced Josh Snyder as the replacement for Tom Linette, who retired following the 2011 season. Snyder was a player at Northwestern Lehigh and Lehigh University. Snyder has been with the program for the last seven years and has been the offensive coordinator under Linette for the past two years. The 32-year old is expected to be approved by the school board at the March 15 meeting. PIAA Wrestling Tournament Results The PIAA wrestling championships were held at the Giant Center, in Hershey on March 10 and 11. That tournament is always a big spectacle around the state. Alumni, parents, friends and school devotees all congregate to the town where Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a basketball game 50 years ago this month. On March 2, 1962 Chamberlain accumulated a lot of personal achievement in that game where the Philadelphia Warriors beat the New York Knicks 169-147. On March 10, 2012, Ethan Lizak, a sophomore from Parkland, earned some personal achievement for himself by beating Michael Kemerer, a freshman from Franklin Regional, 4-2 to win the gold medal in the 106 lb weight class. Lizak finished his 2011-12 season with a 43-1 record and wrestled very well while at Hershey. In his preliminary match, Lizak won by a score of 10-4 to Dan Martoccio, Council Rock South. In the quarterfinals, Lizak had a tougher battle with local, Vincenzo Joseph of Central Catholic. Lizak came out victorious with a 9-7 win. On Saturday morning, Lizak wrestled, Dom Forys from North Allegheny, in the semi-finals. Lizak controlled Forys from the beginning storming out to a 7-0 lead, he finished the match with an 11-1 score. On Saturday evening, Lizak met up with Kemerer for Continued on Page 40

March 8, 1956 This week it is appropriate to write a little about a nice home near Nazareth that is called Gracedale, since it was on the 11th March in 1839 the legislature and the governor, Joseph Ritter, passed a law permitting the buying of land and building an almshouse there upon. Land was later bought from the Moravians near Nazareth [originally called ‘Gnadenthal’, hence ‘Gracedale’] and the almshouse was built. That was 117 years ago. Often homes fall into disrepair over time till they become almost worthless, but that is not the case with Gracedale. It has become nicer and nicer every year, and no one need be ashamed to live there. We were just thinking how many birds are preparing to return to our area, now that it’s becoming warmer. That makes us think what the Dutch and English names are for those birds that frequent our area. Here’s a list that I thought of in the last five minutes: robin; blue bird, sparrow, oriole, crow, flicker, black bird, owl, screech owl, humming bird, pewee, gold finch … O, there are many more, I just can’t think of them now. If you can think of more write them down and send them in. We are always so glad to see the birds return in spring. Whoever doesn’t have love for birds and flowers, doesn’t have love for God. In March the weather can be nasty or nice, that you can depend upon; One day it’s mild, the next day the wind blows like wild; And yet sometimes March brings snow. .[Let’s take her challenge; create a list of other birds you remember (Dutch and English) and send them in to this paper. Please send in just those that you and your friends remember and don’t worry about the spelling! I’ll assemble a list, and put it in ‘Touch of Dutch’ later. Thank you. –Translator]

Extra Point Continued from Page 36 the right to be called the 2011-12 AAA 106 pound state champion. Lizak scored the first takedown in the match, but Kemerer continued to battle. After a back and forth match, Lizak was the one on the top pedestal of the podium wearing the gold medal. Another notable winner was Cole Sheptock, a senior from Northampton. Sheptock finished 4th in the 152 pound weight class. Sheptock started strong by beating Solanco’s Joe Welk by a score of 7-0. Success was the theme again in Sheptock’s quarterfinal match against Dillion Gavlock from Central Mountain. His first loss was dealt to him by Rustin Barrick from Mechanicsburg. Sheptock bounced back by beating Tyler Manion by a score of 4-0. Sheptock took on Casey Kent from LaSalle in the fourth round of the consolation bracket. Kent won the match by a score of 3-0 and Sheptock finished 4th in the 152 pound weight class. extrapoint@townandcountrygazette.com Twitter: @tylertrumbauer Facebook Updates: Town & Country Gazette

Small Farm Dream

Exploring the Small Farm Dream is a course for people who are thinking about starting a farm. Presented by Penn State Extension, the course helps aspiring farmers learn what it would take to start and manage their own agricultural enterprises, and decide whether this the right path for them. The Explorer course takes a learner-centered approach to exploring agriculture as a career. As a participant in the course, you will be guided through an in depth self-assessment process, designed to help you identify the specific aptitudes, interests, skills and resources that you can bring to your new farm business. You will receive support through the process of researching opportunities in agriculture. And you will meet other serious gardeners, livestock enthusiasts, and entrepreneurs who are also asking themselves, “is farming right for me?” If you dream of starting a farm but are not sure where to start, Exploring the Small Farm Dream is the ideal learning and networking opportunity for you!

Spring Checklist for Home and Lawn Care

Page 43

Local Students Move on to States

(NU) - Whether you’re considering the resale value of your home or are simply resigned to doing maintenance projects to keep your house in good condition, your lawn and garden could certainly benefit from some TLC of the home and lawn improvement variety this spring. The exterior of your house commands most first impressions, and even mild winters inflict seasonal damage. If you don’t know where to start, a home-improvement project checklist may help. Consider the following lawn- and gardenmaintenance tips from home and garden experts at HGTV and MarthaStewart.com: • Remove piles of dead leaves from the lawn. Not only will your grass grow greener, a clean lawn helps maximize fertilizers and pesticides. Don’t make the mistake of fertilizing your grass too early though. April is the general benchmark; any sooner might result in yellow spots and driedout patches of grass. • Check gutters for leaks and debris. Loose gutters cause improper drainage, so water can collect in basements and crawl spaces. Downspouts should point away from the foundation of the house and must be clear of all debris. • Start a roof fund. It’s a good rule of thumb to check your roof for rotted, buckled, loose or missing shingles after winter because summer sun will only worsen the damage. Since roof maintenance is so expensive, it’s also smart to start a fund before you need it. • Remove piles of wood or debris stacked near the home. Fire- wood should be kept far away from the foundation, and stacked 18 inches off the ground. These preventative measures help keep insect pests from exploring your home. • Don’t strain yourself, and stay hydrated. This might be the first time you’ve done any heavy lifting or spent hours in the sun for months. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, take breaks and stretch your muscles. If you suffer from backaches and muscle strains, keep some relief on hand. • Call a professional to clean your AC unit. Heating and cooling experts recommend an annual servicing since clean coils work more efficiently. When the summer’s blazing heat drives you indoors, your family will appreciate having an AC operating at peak levels.

On February 1 over 400 students competed in 52 hands-on skill and leadership competitions. This “Showcase of Skills” provided a unique opportunity to observe some of the most talented career and technical education students in the area. District Gold Medal winners advanced to state and national competitions. This year, the SkillsUSA Council is partnering with postsecondary educational institutions to award over $64,100 in scholarships to the medalists of 9 competitions. How Do You Choose Your Contractor? Today’s home building, remodeling and repairs require skilled craftspeople and knowledgeable professionals, who are at the same time, business men and women committed to quality and excellence and follow state laws and guidelines. You want to be confident that the builder, remodeler, contractor or supplier is current on the things that are important to the success of your project. You are probably wondering what to look for in a responsible contractor. Here are some tips! o Is the contractor a member of a Builders Association? o Is the contractor registered with the Pennsylvania State Attorney General’s office? o Take your time. Investigate. Spend time before you spend money. o Does the contractor have proof of insurance and carry workers compensation insurance. o Incorporate any warranties, guaranties or other promises in your contract; always insist that change orders be in writing. o Check references. Bank, Suppliers, SubContractors. Speak with other home owners in the neighborhood.

o Always have your attorney represent you and review all documentation prior to signing. o See for yourself the quality of work that is being preformed. o Have specific starting and completion dates, some delays are unavoidable and beyond the contractor’s control. o Beware of unusually low bids or low advertised pricing. Select a contractor you are comfortable with, who understands your needs, desires, and one you can communicate with easily. It is understandable why you may be tempted to turn to a less reputable contractor, because job quotes are almost always lower. But you need to remember the risks involved in hiring uninsured contractors who provide no written contracts or guarantees and who often pay no taxes. You should look at everything listed above. Do not look only at the bottom line. Additionally, your contractor will not mind if you thoroughly check their credentials. Business BLUE MOUNTAIN

Thomson’s Meat Market – Celebrating 30 Years Owner: Reed Thomson Established: February 1, 1982 Location: 430 Washington Street, Walnutport PA 18088 History: Reed Thomson was just 13 years old when he began to learn about the business that has made his store a household name in our area. Mr. John Milander inspired Reed in the late 70’s when he worked at Milander’s North, which was located in same spot as Thomson’s is today. Reed, a high school graduate, has been making homemade meats and deli items for the past thirty years. About Us: The meat market and deli carries products that range from the fresh homemade sausages, hamburger and soups to great side dishes like mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese, local ice teas and potato chips, fresh bread and rolls and even lottery tickets and newspapers. They also carry homemade beef sticks you cant get anywhere else! Reed, a simple guy, says he gets the most satisfaction from “making good products.” With convenient store hours and friendly employees, Thomson’s Market is a gem located right here in Walnutport. The market can easily accommodate your outdoor BBQ needs, with fresh homemade turkey, beef and ham BBQ’s, pre-made and ready when you need them! Here to Stay: On February 1, 2012 Reed, his staff and their customers celebrated 30 years in the community. Holding true to their core values of “Serving The Community” (he said he was a simple guy) Thomson’s prides itself on homemade products. “We have two registers and they are both going most of time,” he said. Reed has been lucky, he says, to be able to provide the community with what they are looking for.“If you got a recipe, I’ll make it for you,” he said.

In addition to the 25 employees at Thomson’s, his son Jake joins Reed at the meat counter. He has been working with his dad since high school and can handle pretty much anything that comes up. When Reed decides to retire and spend his days in a tree stand (which is the only other place he would rather be) Jake will continue to serve the community, taking over the family business. Reed says,“I am very lucky that Jake is interested.” The People: While he is a simple guy, with simple values, Reed knows that his business is more than the fresh meats. He said “everyday is a special one” because the people make it that way. He appreciates his customers (although he doesn’t understand why they would stand in a line that wraps halfway around the Market) “It makes me happy that people come stand in line.” Stop In: Store hours are Mon. – Thurs. 9 am – 7 pm, Fri. 9 am – 8 pm, Sat. 9 am – 5 pm, and Sun. 9 am – 2 pm. Stop in and get a taste of what Thomson’s has been offering the community since 1982. Talk to the young folks that are getting a chance to prove themselves as good employees. You may even meet Marlene, who has been working with Reed since the store opened. Marlene worked for Mike Wasilkousky when Corner Cut Rate was the name of the store in the 1960’s and Mr. Milander until the 80’s. In her own words,“I go with the building.” Community Involvement: Thomson’s is very involved in the community. They help organizations as much as possible and try to spread the involvement to different organizations. Keep your eyes open for the next Thomson’s hoagie fundraiser! Phone: 610-767-4592

SAVE UP TO 20% OF YOUR HEAT! If you have a fireplace in your home, 20% of your home’s heat can be lost up the flue! Do a simple candle test… light a candle and SLOWLY go around the edge of your fireplace opening – or the edge of the fireplace doors, for those homeowners with doors. See what happens to the flame. From the midpoint and up across the top, the flame will move slightly TOWARD the fireplace. This shows the heat leaving your house. At the bottom of the fireplace, the flame will move towards your room. This is the COLD AIR coming down the backside of the flue and heading straight into your cozy warm home! The Top Sealing Damper was originally invented as a replacement damper for rusted-out heatilator fireplace dampers. We have installed 900+ top-mount dampers, 300 as replacement dampers and 600 on masonry fireplaces. They save energy, reduce cold air drafts, make the room quieter, and make starting a fire easier because of the warm column of air that has replaced the standard cold, wet column of air that is normally in your flue.

This well constructed, superbly eningeered damper eliminates 90% of the winter heat and summer cooling loss that leaks past your current damper. It also eliminates downdrafts and keeps moisture and animals out of your chimney and home. Moisture in your chimney causes unwelcome odors and leads to deterioration of bricks and mortar. The Lyemance Top-Sealing Damper works year round to protect your chimney. That’s why thousands are installed each year.

• Easy to operate • Seals in warmth and energy • Stops animals from entering your home • Seals out moisture to extend chimney life • Stops downdrafts • Helps prevent chimney odors

Lyemance energysaving dampers are available only from chimney professionals

Professionals always sell the sturdiest, most durable, and most effective products available – the ones you can’t find in your local stores. Why? They stake their reputation on

what they sell. Lyemance Dampers are only sold through professionals because it takes a professional to properly size and install a Lyemance Damper. Once installed, it’s easy as pie to use – with a simple tug on the handle, it’s open and with another tug, it’s closed. Why wait? Begin saving energy and increase your comfort now. Don’t waste another dollar in energy loss – begin your long friendship with Lyemance, the leader in top-sealing dampers.
