From the Publisher’s Desk
Joe Korba
It’s such a relief to finally be out of the deep freeze and have some hope for warmer days ahead. It’s so great to see baseball back on television—even if it’s just spring training, it makes me long for a trip to Florida or Arizona to catch a live game. I’m looking forward to taking walks outside and getting my tomatoes planted. As you can probably tell, this is our annual spring edition; the first day of spring is the day after this issue drops. This edition also marks the beginning of our yearly “Best Restaurant” contest. Make sure to support your favorite local place to grab a bite and send in the form on page 28. As always, I hope you enjoy this one. Happy spring!

Meet the Staff Where is your favorite place to visit on a nice spring day? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I love taking walks down the Weissport Canal, maybe doing some fishing as I go.
Tony Pisco, Art Director: Coca-Cola Park is nice, but I’d head down to Reading to FirstEnergy Stadium to catch a Fightin’ Phils baseball game. That’s a great way to spend a nice spring day.
Danielle Tepper, Editor: It may not be around my hometown now, but it’s where I used to live, so that kind of counts, right? I grew up near Red Bank, NJ, and I worked there for almost a year as a freelance reporter in 20122013. I fell in love with it all over again, particularly Marine Park which offers gorgeous views of the Navesink River. It lent itself to some of my favorite photographs (like this one) and I spent countless afternoons there, just basking in the glow of the sun reflecting off the water when I wanted a moment’s peace.
Alice Wanamaker, Editorial Assistant: The Walnutport Canal. I know I have said it before, but I will say it again: we are blessed to have a gem of an outdoor resource at our disposal. The sights, sounds, and scents of spring will be in their glory in a few weeks along the Walnutport Canal. I can't wait!
Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: After long winters, spring does not come soon enough. When spring finally arrives and the weather cooperates, I love to be outside enjoying the activities that arrive; soccer practices for the grandsons, and the playgrounds to release some of the cooped-up winter energy they have accumulated.
Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant: My favorite local places to enjoy a spring day would be Rita’s and the local walking trails.

$50,000 Gift To SJNRS Submitted by SISTER VIRGINIA STEPHANIE An anonymous donor has gifted St. John Neumann Regional School with a check for $50,000! Sister V. Stephanie, principal, said she is delighted with the contribution. The donor remarked that SJNRS contributes to society through fostering the values that this country was built on. SJNRS believes in helping the whole child. In this age of cut-backs, SJNRS continues to employ separate teachers for art, computer skills, foreign language, music, and physical education. The $50,000 donation will support these needed areas of child development. Mrs. T. Mcgrath expressed her gratitude, saying, “As a family that chooses to send their children to St. John Neumann, we value the importance of Christian values as a major part of our children’s education. We also value the sense of community such a small school can build among the students and families. When we learned our school received such a gift, it brought all the values that brought our family to St. John Neumann to life. In the community of SJNRS, we teach our children the importance of Time, Treasure, and Talent, and that we give what we can to help those in need. The gift of this treasure will go a long way to continue

offering an affordable, quality, Christian-based education to many families including mine.” St. John Neumann Regional School has campuses located in both Palmerton and Slatington and educates students in Kindergarten through grade 8. The school hosts an open house every second Thursday of the month in their Slatington Campus on W. Washington Street and is prepared for tours at the Palmerton Campus as well.

The Bach & Handel Chorale, A Group Of Dedicated Singers Submitted by HOWARD DAVIS The Bach & Handel Chorale has been a musical force in the Carbon County area for the past 31 years. Maestro Randall Douglas Perry had a vision to bring the sacred music of the masters to the people of Carbon County and the surrounding area. A group of dedicated singers joined Mr. Perry in his vision and the Bach & Handel Chorale was born. Performances were presented at various venues throughout the area, such as Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Jim Thorpe. These first concerts were well received and the programs were expanded. Works of Bach & Handel were prominently featured including “The Messiah” in its entirety and Bach’s “B Minor Mass.” Several original works written by Maestro Perry have also been featured. Over the ensuing years, the faces of the singers have changed, but the dedication of the singers and Mr. Perry has not. Through the graciousness of Pastor Peter Muhr and the Church Council at St. John’s Lutheran Church in The Heights in Jim Thorpe, the Chorale has rehearsal space on Monday nights. The singers of The Bach & Handel Chorale span

a wide range of backgrounds, and all members of the Chorale are volunteers. But being volunteers does not mean they are amateurs. In fact, the voices and the direction of Mr. Perry make this Chorale a renowned organization. Most of the music the Chorale performs is not easy, and it takes a lot of dedication to make the music blend and be worthy of presentation. However, because this group of singers is so dedicated to this end, it all comes together and the Chorale makes beautiful music. During this past rehearsal season, the Chorale has faced some major challenges in preparing for this spring’s concerts. It seemed as if every Monday, there was inclement weather that would not allow the Chorale to meet as a group and come together for rehearsals. Due to the dedication of these singers who have been practicing at home as well as at regular rehearsals, our upcoming concerts are polished and waiting to be heard. As the Chorale moves into its fourth decade of performing, the vision is for the Chorale to expand its “sphere of influence” into other areas of Pennsylvania. In 2014, the Chorale celebrated its 30th anniversary with a concert at St. Mark’s. This concert included an original work making its debut, “We Sing of God” written by Maestro Perry. This song was very well received by those in attendance and a CD was made of this performance with the first 100 copies selling out in a very short time. The Chorale will be presenting a Passion/Easter Concert on Saturday, April 11 at 3 p.m. at a new venue, Zion United Church of Christ at 225 Iron St. in Lehighton. This concert will include excerpts

from Bach’s “B Minor Mass” and Handel’s “Messiah” as well as other classical music that moves us from the Passion through Easter. On Saturday, May 16 at 3 p.m., the Chorale will present at a benefit concert at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lehighton. All proceeds will go to the Lehighton Boys’ and Girls’ Band so that music may continue to be an influence in young peoples’ lives. Also on Saturday, May 16, the Chorale will perform a Jazz Concert with the Perseverance Jazz Band at The Mauch Chunk Opera House at 7 p.m. This is a lively concert and highlights the versatility of the Chorale. It is an opportunity for the Chorale members to ‘let their hair down’ and have some fun with the audience. We hope you will be able to attend all of our upcoming concerts. Hearing this group of dedicated singers will definitely inspire you leave as a changed person!

Provident Bank Participates In Read Across America Day
Provident Bank employees Margie Diaz and Brittnae Schenck-Artis read stories to children at the Metuchen YMCA for Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday on March 2. Bank employees also donated over 200 books to schools across the region. Photo courtesy of The Provident Bank. Submitted by BRYAN HYLAND The Provident Bank participated in Read Across America Day by reading children’s books to preschool children at Clark Preschool, two YMCAs of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge, and South Amboy locations and at the Head Start of Lehigh Valley. Employees also generously donated over 200 children’s books to support the cause. The children were attentive and excited to read and learn. At storytime, they gathered on the reading rug as Provident employees read Dr. Seuss stories such as “The Cat in the Hat,”“Fox in Socks,” and “Green Eggs and Ham.”They engaged with the stories, asked questions, and identified colors, foods, and animals along with the noises they make. To cap off the day, both Provident employees and the preschoolers enjoyed a singalong and played games. More information about The Provident Bank is available at www.ProvidentNJ.com.

Slate Heritage Trail History Submitted by NORTHERN LEHIGH HISTORICAL SOCIETY A 3.3 mile Rails-to-Trail project was initiated by a committee of the Northern Lehigh Historical Society, Inc. in April 2001. The Slate Heritage Trail utilizes, as much as possible, the former Lehigh Valley Railroad right-of-way from a junction with the D&L Heritage Trail in lower Slatington through Emerald to the Slatedale Fire Company's baseball fields. The former rail line, opened in 1870 by the Lehigh Valley Railroad and known as the Slatedale Branch, ran from a junction in Slatington with the

The primary commodities hauled on the line were finished slate products from the burgeoning slate quarrying operations in the Northern Lehigh area. In 1874, the Reading Railroad extended their line through northern Lehigh County and linked with the Lehigh Valley Railroad at Franklin (now Emerald) at a point denoted as Little Run Junction. The Reading obtained trackage rights from the Lehigh Valley over the Slatedale branch into Slatington. The Reading passenger trains operating into Slatington became known as the “Berksy” railroad. Blind Dog, Golden Smile
Smiley the golden retriever is a Canadian pup who’s spreading his contagious joy to those in need of some canine lovin’. Born with a case of dwarfism—and no eyes!—he was rescued from a puppy mill when he was around one or two years old. His owner, Joanne George, had his eyelids sewn shut and decided he would make a wonderful therapy dog. Smiley has been inspiring special needs kids and nursing home patients for the past seven years with his golden demeanor in spite of his hardships. George told CBS News, “Dogs can come back from anything, they forget their past. We as humans, dwell on the past." Smiley is now 10, so it’s hard to say why he unexpectedly exploded into internet fame, but his story suddenly splashed itself across social media and digital news outlets early last week. Everyone’s hearts are bursting with the big ball of love that is Smiley. Photo courtesy of happytailspetphotography. ca/blind-golden-retriever-with-a-big-smileburlington-ontario-pet-photographer-2.

ADI Launches PA Bill To Ban Wild Animals From Circuses Submitted by LORI DE WAAL Pennsylvania Senator Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery/Delaware) recently announced his introduction of a state bill to protect animals and people by banning the use of wild and exotic animals in traveling acts. Animal Defenders International (ADI) is working closely with Senator Leach’s office, providing research and evidence, including undercover investigations, affirming such shows cannot provide for these animals, nor can they protect citizens from the inherent risk. There is no humane existence for wild animals in traveling circuses. Senator Leach also noted,“In the past few years, the public learned about the suffering endured by circus elephants. The outcry, including my bill to ban the use of bullhooks on elephants, was so great that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus decided to phase out the use of elephants in its shows. Elephants are not the only circus animals that are suffering. To maximize profit, traveling exhibitions use grueling itineraries that force all of their animals to endure cramped living quarters, limited social interaction, and perpetual stress. Circuses hide this suffering from audiences, who witness only the power and grace of these magnificent animals. The secret is out. The public will not tolerate this unconscionable cruelty any longer.” ADI President Jan Creamer said, “We are proud to support Senator Leach’s leadership on this effort to make sure these magnificent animals are not abused in the name of entertainment in Pennsylvania. Due to severe confinement, lack of free exercise, and the restriction of natural behaviors, animals used in traveling circuses suffer and are prone to health, behavioral, and psychological problems. The days of animals suffering in traveling circuses are numbered, not
just here in the U.S. but all over the world.” ADI has been instrumental in securing many of the local restrictions now in place in at least 50 U.S. jurisdictions in 23 states, and internationally, 30 countries have banned performing animals in traveling circuses nationwide. Senator Leach invites his colleagues in the Pennsylvania legislature to join this effort and to attend a special Saturday, April 25 screening of ADI’s Lion Ark, a vivid behind-the-scenes account of the ambitious and daring rescue of 25 lions from illegal Bolivian circuses to sanctuary here in the U.S. Visit www.lionarkthemovie.com/ screenings for details. At this very moment, ADI’s Operation Spirit of Freedom is underway to rescue and rehome animals confiscated by Peruvian authorities (SERFOR) enforcing that country’s national ban on wild animals in traveling circuses. In the coming weeks, ADI will relocate almost 60 rescued circus animals to permanent homes—building habitats in the Amazon forest for rescued native wildlife and airlifting 21 Peruvian circus lions along with nine Columbian circus lions to sanctuary in Colorado.

The Secret Place by Tana French
hen a brutal murder of a teenage boy occurs
on the grounds of St. Kilda’s School, a prim and proper girl’s boarding school, eyebrows are raised and lips are sealed. The Murder Squad in Dublin, Ireland is unable to solve the case and the trail runs cold. Almost a year later, a student drops off a mysterious notecard with cutout letters saying, “I know who killed him,” taken off of the school’s gossip bulletin board by the name of The Secret Place. This mysterious card prompts detectives Stephen Moran and Antoinette
Conway to reopen the case and take a day trip to St. Kilda’s. What starts as questioning as to who hung the cryptic card turns into an all out murder investigation, taking place over the course of one day. Are children capable of murder? Of sacrifice? As it turns out, yes— yes, they are. The Secret Place is Tana French’s fifth novel in her Dublin crime drama series. Haven’t read any previous books in the series? Not to worry, you do not need to (however I’d suggest that you do) to understand. Each book is very loosely related to the next. It is an intriguing tale of strong, powerful bonds of friendship and just how far that friendship can go. Would you sacrifice anything for a friendship? Even a life? Each chapter flip-flops between events leading up to the murder and present time, a year after the murder. This allows the reader to glimpse into the mindset of the girls at the school and the detectives investigating the case. Not only do you get acquainted with each of the characters, you learn each side to the story, each motive, every lie and twist. Diving into the bubble-gum, fuzzy, naïve, sugarcoated, yet backstabbing world of St. Kilda’s is telling of just how dangerous teenage girls can be: “…a place like this is riddled with secrets, but their shells are thin and it’s crowded in here, they get bashed and jostled against each other; if you’re not super careful, then sooner or later they crack open and all the tender flesh comes
spilling out.” I’ve found with each of French’s novels, and her fifth installment is no different, that the entire body of the novel is fantastic, completely and utterly engrossing, the kind where you should only pick the book up if you are in a suitable place to have your face buried in a book for a couple of hours. Her characters’ personalities are so developed and well thought out that I find myself contemplating what they are doing and thinking when I am away from them, and I miss them when I am finished. I almost feel a loss because I know I am done with their story and will not be spending any more time with them. (I get very attached.) As phenomenal as French’s stories are, I do have some negative points. Her writing gets to be extremely loquacious at times. She is very descriptive and her imagery practically drips off the page, however when I am speed reading to find out what happens next, I am left with just a mouthful of extensive descriptions and words that I wish I could spit out and skip over. Also, I really hate to say it, but her endings are usually disappointing. Everything leading up to her endings is heart pounding—don’t even look at me because I am too busy reading—but then you finish the book and just feel a certain amount of disappointment. At least I do. I hope that doesn’t discourage you, as every story needs an ending, whether it is a perfect one or not.

air our girl Karen so desperately needed to push her to reach her superstar potential by following her own path, not the one she felt obligated to take. The actors, an American Idol runner-up and a Broadway vet, helped the characters make truly beautiful music when they finally accepted each other for who they were at their core: two people just trying to find a connection.
Nathan Scott | One Tree Hill Played by James Lafferty
Best Bad Boys of TV (continued)
Just in case you missed our last couple of issues, let’s refresh: You gotta love a good bad boy. That quintessential television character always seems two-dimensional on the page until they get fleshed out into living, breathing, brooding boys who don’t want your heart but you’re still compelled to yank it from your chest and give it to them anyway. It’s up to the actors who play them to let their softer side show through just enough to make you love/ hate them and look forward to the next time they grace your screen. I shuffled through my long list of favorite shows in my head and realized that almost every single one had one of those leather jacket-wearing, motorcycle-riding, look-me-in-the-eyes-andswoon kind of guys. So POP is going to be broken into segments and we’re going to explore this topic for a while. (Because I said so.) Last issue, I covered characters from AMC’s other smash hit “Breaking Bad,” as well as Joss Whedon’s cult classic “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and The WB’s darling drama “Gilmore Girls.” Next up:
As the archetypal high school jock, Nathan was the chosen one in Tree Hill, NC; literally, the son his father chose to acknowledge as family, while leaving Nathan’s half-brother Lucas to live in the constant shadow of the Scott name. Nathan was irrefutably a jerk—until he met Lucas’ BFF, Haley. And the teenage-bad-boy-meets-good-girl cliché again reared its ugly head, but the end result was such a shining, golden, lasting love that it certainly made falling for the jerk look worth it. By the end of the nine-season series, they were married with two precious kids and all the happiness anyone could want. Their little family scenes were so cute it hurt.
Jesse Katsopolis | Full House Played by John Stamos
Jimmy Collins | Smash Played by Jeremy Jordan
NBC’s “Smash” was a short-lived success, but there’s no denying that Jimmy’s appearance pulled the show from its slump in the sophomore season. The kid from the wrong side of the tracks trying to make it in the big city was the breath of fresh
OK, so Uncle Jesse wasn’t really bad. He just liked to tune up his Harley, strut around in his leather jacket, rock out on his guitar, and give pep talks to his hair. He had all the accessories, just not the attitude. Instead, he was caring and funny and always there to lend a helping hand to his best friends or nieces. Underneath all the stereotypes, he was just a loving man who just wanted to find the woman of his dreams and become a great father, which he eventually did—and he looked damn fine doing it. Have mercy!

[life] insurance company when they insured horses. When someone insured his horse, then every year he needed to take his horse to a place for the necessity of judging his worth or value, by three judges or appraisers. All three of them had a little book and wrote in it what they determined the horse was worth. Then the three showed their figures [to each other] and thrashed out a number that was about in the middle. That was the amount for which the fellow could insure his horse.
Page 41
The height of the horse and the weight were also recorded. If the horse died, then the insurance company paid [that appraised] amount. That was life insurance for horses. Today people drive cars and we have accident insurance. Reuben said he had insured in a horses’ [life insurance] company that was started back in the 1800s but went defunct about 1910. Here is something that we would like to know. What is the English word for a “Kummet-bloder”? When a horse had “Bauch-frissel”, what was that in English? [Kummet-bloder, m., sore shoulder or blister, caused by the horse collar (es Kummet). Bauchfrissel, n., belly rash.] [Due to the subject matter, there is more than the usual number of English loan words in Florence’s article. As in the past, I chose to respell the more common ones to make them more “Dutchy”; for the remainder, I left their spelling untouched.] -Larry Gradwohl

Goodwill Fire Company #1 Of Germansville’s 100th Anniversary Submitted by RANDY METZGER On July 11, the Goodwill Fire Company #1 of Germansville will be holding its 100th Anniversary celebration, including a community parade. The parade will begin at approximately 2 p.m. We would ask that spectators try to spread themselves out along the parade route. We understand this is a country parade and we lack sidewalks, but please stay to the sides of the road and leave ample room for the parade to proceed. There will also be parking available at Goodwill Fire Company (6011 Memorial Rd.) which will grant spectator access

to the village of Germansville to view the parade. Roads in the area will be accessible prior to the beginning of the parade. At the time of the parade, all roads will be temporarily shut down and reopened as the parade passes. For the duration of the festivities, Memorial Rd. between Central Rd. and Bullhead Rd. will be closed (from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.). This area will only be open to residents, guests, and emergency vehicles. We would like to invite everyone back to the fire department for our ceremony, food, band, and fireworks, which will begin at approximately 4 p.m. and last until around 10 p.m. Best access to the fire department area would be from Hunters Hill Rd. or Bake Oven Rd. north into Germansville, or Mountain Rd. to Bake Oven Rd. south. Fire police will be directing at all intersections. As part of the festivities, we will have the opening of our cornerstone, the keynote speaker State Fire Commissioner Tim Solobay, a fire department historical display, quilt signing, T-shirts and mugs for sale, the Rehrig Brothers Band from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and an extravagant fireworks display from local residents, Mike Peters and Ryan Oncheck. Come out and celebrate 100 years of dedicated service to our community.
